Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. I'm Bianca Holman. It's Saturday, February 14th, happy Valentine's Day. This morning on eyewitness news, a fatal crash shuts down NC 87, three dead and two critically injured. New details this morning as a fighter jet intercepts a private plane in a restricted airspace near Fort Braggd during President Trump's visit last night. A community gathers to remember Grayson Ketchy, a beloved NC state fan. The FBI working through several tips in the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case. And DHS finding funding actually lapsing as pushed the U.S. into a partial government shutdown with the negotiation stalled over policy changes to immigration enforcement.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Let's go ahead and take a live look at the Raleigh skyline as the sun is up in the clouds this Saturday morning, but still looking good, but don't be fooled as you had out the door. It's a little chilly. A little cold early on, but it's going to warm so fast today. Really going to be nice. Hope you get a chance to get out. That's right. Date night tonight. If you have plans with your significant other should be a pretty decent night. 62 today, that's not bad at all. We'll call it seasonably mild. The average high is about 56 degrees. So a little above that, it was only 50. you on yesterday in contrast and there's that deficit with the rain for the month and for the season for the winter season about four and a half inches behind and Fayetteville about two and a half inches behind. We need to get some rain and it's coming. It's going to be here tomorrow probably late morning or midday into the afternoon and overnight hours. And then as we get into
Starting point is 00:01:45 Monday, rain is gone and will be dry for the rest of the week. Most of the models hinting it around an inch of rain or so, the high resolution rapid refresh up to an inch and a quarter and the North America model, the most bullish. We'll take that one if we can, but generally, I think widespread inch of rain across Central North Carolina looks plausible. So out and about as we go throughout the morning hours, temperatures getting up to 38 degrees,
Starting point is 00:02:06 44 by 10 a.m. and midday, we're up to 53. Right now, though, we're looking at some sunshine out there and 36 degrees, so the numbers have been warming up after starting out in the 20s everywhere, and a couple spots fell to the teens, 34 and Aron Oak Rapids, 37, Fayetteville and Southern Pines, also in the upper 30s at this time. States hosting Miami today at 4 o'clock at Lenovo Center.
Starting point is 00:02:28 About an hour before as you're walking in, low 60s. A little chilly when you head back home at about 49 degrees. Please make some plans. This week coming up looks fantastic. It's going to be in the 70s for a few days. More on that in just a few minutes. All right, Steve, thank you. We've got breaking news this morning.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Raleigh Police investigating a deadly shooting around 2 a.m. on East Davy Street. Officers saying an adult male was shot and later died at the high. hospital. No suspects are being, they don't have any suspects in custody right now. And so if you have any information, you're asked to contact Raleigh PD or crime stoppers online. Also overnight, a deadly head-on crash shut down NC Highway 87 near Sanford. Three soldiers from Fort Bragg were inside a Toyota. Two were pronounced dead and one remains in critical condition at Womack Army Hospital. The pickup driver, a Sanford resident, was also killed. State Highway Patrol is
Starting point is 00:03:20 investigating. Well, this morning. morning we're learning new details after a fighter jet had to intercept a private plane that violated restricted airspace while President Trump was on the ground at Fort Prague. Now, according to the director of the Harnet Regional Jet Port, a twin-engine plane was flying from Moore County Airport in Southern Pines to the Johnson County Regional Airport but went into the 30-mile temporary flight restriction zone because Air Force One was nearby. The pilot did not file a flight plan and had to be intercepted by a F-16 jet during the the interception, the F-16 deployed flares to get the pilot's attention. The small plane eventually
Starting point is 00:03:57 landed at the Harnett Regional Airport. The director of that airport had this to say after he spoke with the pilot. He was actually unaware of the flight restriction and we gave him the phone number. He made a phone call and he was here for a couple hours and he didn't get any visitors, but he did take off and fly back to Moore County. I don't know what he was thinking. He indicated that a box wasn't checked on his iPad, which would indicate TFR is in place. So he missed the TFR.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Now, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited Fort Bragg on Friday to thank the soldiers involved in the dramatic capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's last month. Last month, we proved this. truth once again when some of our greatest soldiers right here to ever live frankly successfully captured the outlaw dictator of Venezuela Nicholas Maduro soldiers at Fort Bragg practice the operation in a full-scale
Starting point is 00:05:06 replica of Maduro's compound Maduro is facing federal charges of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking he's being held in a New York jail now here's how incredible and complex that military operation was to capture Maduro. After months of preparation, 150 military aircrafts launched from 20 different bases and ships into Venezuela. Nearly a dozen helicopters swept low over the ocean just at 100 feet. At the same time, war planes took out air defense systems allowing the helicopters carrying the Delta Force team from Fort Bragg to reach Maduro's compound. When they arrived, they shot and killed several of Maduro's Cuban guards and then took Maduro and his wife by helicopter out of the country.
Starting point is 00:05:46 No American troops lost their lives in that operation. The NC State Wolfpack family mourning the loss of one of their most beloved fans. Grayson Ketchy passed away Thursday. Grayson gaining love around the world after forming a special relationship with a former Miss Wolf. People who had a bond with Grayson went to the campus last night to remember the boy who spread so much love and joy and put a smile on everyone's face. I just feel so grateful to have been able to say that I know and love and was loved by Grayson. A very emotional night and that Wolfpack pride and love for Grace was on full display and from the Bell Tower on campus. A Durham mother is facing is in custody after a deadly attack on her children the charges she's facing.
Starting point is 00:06:39 And hundreds in the triangle without cell service this morning, we share the wireless carrier with reports of an outage in Durham. And measles cases trending down nationwide, but exposures, warnings continue here in our state, North Carolina. But first, good morning, Steve. Hey, good morning there, Bianca. Good morning, everybody. It's getting warmer. We're above freezing in most spots. Still there at 30 in rocks. We're on 31 into Sanford.
Starting point is 00:07:02 We're getting up to the 60s today. That's not bad at all. That's above average. But tomorrow, it's going to be cooler. And then here comes the rain. All the details after the break. I want you. The Hyundai-A-Lantra hybrid inspires a special type of love,
Starting point is 00:07:22 the type that makes you slow down and enjoy the ride. With best-in-class fuel efficiency and a best-in-class new car warranty, it's made for the long run, wherever the road takes you next. Because some relationships are built to go the distance. It's that Hyundai-A-Lantra type of love. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11-I Witness News. Welcome back, everybody. Good morning to you today. Numbers warming up.
Starting point is 00:07:51 get in the upper 50s and lower 60s today with plenty of sunshine around a few clouds later in the day. Heading out to bow for it today. We'll get up around 60 or so on two and hold there through 4 o'clock. And then the numbers will start to come down a little bit after that. 34 into Roxborough now. 34 also into Chapel Hill, Fayetteville at 37 and Goldsboro's at 36 degrees. Duke's got a big game today against Clemson tip off at midday today. So at 11 a.m. as you're walking into Cameron about 48 when you head back to your car near 60 degrees. clouds will be passing by at that time. So the low tonight, because of the increased cloud cover, it's going to be milder in a south breeze at about five miles an hour. Rain tomorrow, probably midday.
Starting point is 00:08:32 There could be a spotty morning shower. It's really the afternoon and evening. The lion's share of this event's going to be with us and temperatures in the 50s. East Coast travel looks pretty good today. Now Dallas is going to have rain and some thunder, maybe some severe weather in parts of Texas and all the way down into Louisiana as well up to a level two risk there. So far, though, major hubs are showing no delays. Got your 70 forecast coming up in just a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you. Well, this morning, a Durham mother is behind bars after police say she killed one of her young children and tried to kill the other. Andrea Faust is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Police say her two small children were found unresponsive in a home on Chartwell Court near NC-98 Thursday night. Neighbors say the children were brothers under the age of five. And we're working to learn more about the incident and the condition of the surviving child. A Cumberland County grand jury has indicted Shana Cloud for first-degree murder and the death of her husband retired Green Beret Clint Bunnell. Binell was last seen on January 27, 2025. On February 25th, Sheriff deputies found his torso in a pond. The autopsy show Bona was shot four times.
Starting point is 00:09:42 The rest of his remains have never been found. Shana Cloud's trial date is expected sometime in 2027. And right now you can watch the ABC 11 true crime, Greenbrae murder documentary. What Happened to Clint Bunnell on our website, ABC11.com. Measles cases climb nationwide. 15 confirmed here in our state and thousands of tips pouring in and the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case in Arizona. And as we head to break, here's a look at the current medal count at the winter games.
Starting point is 00:10:12 The United States currently in third. Oh, breaking news overnight in the search for Nancy Guthrie investigators working in a neighborhood near Guthrie's home appearing to detain someone in a car, and that's as hundreds of deputies and FBI agents are fielding tips, sourcing possible evidence for clues in her disappearance. ABC News chief investigative correspondent Aaron Kuttersky is in Tucson, Arizona. Overnight police moving into a residential neighborhood about two miles from Nancy Guthrie's home. Investigators worked in the rain as part of the search for the kidnapper. They appeared to detain someone in a car.
Starting point is 00:10:52 It has now been two weeks since the 84-year-old grandmother in fragile health was last seen, and this morning investigators have more substantial clues, a backpack, gloves, and DNA they are now analyzing. Some of that DNA was collected from Nancy Guthrie's property, but investigators say it belongs to someone other than her or anyone in close contact to her. Investigators are now working to identify who it belongs to. Other DNA was lifted from gloves found in searches within a few miles of Nancy Guthrie's home, The New York Post capturing these images of law enforcement finding this glove along a desert road. Any DNA back on anything?
Starting point is 00:11:28 We have. Yeah, we've gotten DNA back, and that's why I say, well, they already have the genetic markers of those that we think had access to the home, rightfully so, the family, the landscapers, the pool guy. Are you useful come back? Well, you've got DNA, so that's of use. Now we have to go through and try to eliminate people or make people. You know, we're so hopeful that we're getting closer. We just believe that. Authorities are working to piece together a clearer profile of this masked man appearing to be armed, lurking on her doorstep the night she was taken.
Starting point is 00:12:02 The FBI says the suspect is 5-9 to 510 of average build and carrying a backpack sold at Walmart. The retailer declined to comment. We found the same backpack at a Walmart here in Tucson for $11. Backpack's a Walmart backpack, right? So that's what I understand. We're hoping. We're hoping. We have teams working on all of this stuff.
Starting point is 00:12:23 Teams of investigators are out looking for more clues. 400 cops are out there looking for Nancy. 24-7. And that was our Aaron Kutterski reporting there. So this morning, hundreds in the triangle without phone service. AT&T is reporting a cell service outage here in the triangle. So eyewitness news has learned it's affecting AT&T customers in Durham. and the outage could last for a couple of days.
Starting point is 00:12:48 We're working to learn what caused this issue, so stay with us for updates. And new this morning, the CDC giving us an update on where we stand with measles across the country. According to the agency, just over 900 cases have been confirmed this year. And in North Carolina, we've had 15 of those measles cases. The number of cases have been trending downward nationwide
Starting point is 00:13:09 since the second week of January. But this week, local health officials have warned people of potential measles exposure in wake, Durham Orange and Johnston counties. Now it's time to check of the weather. Hopefully things are warming up. We've got to get out on those dates today. Yeah, see?
Starting point is 00:13:25 Absolutely. I think we'll be fine for today. And up in the mountains, good day for some skiing, much better than tomorrow. Soaking rain is going to hit there as well. But getting pretty busy out there up at Catalucci. All right. So for us today, pretty good.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I mean, we're going to be in the low 60s, plenty of sunshine around, a few clouds around this afternoon. And your evening date night plans for Valentine's Day, you'll be fine. just clouds moving in. It's a Soaker Sunday for us. It's a good indoor day, especially midday on. I think the morning hours just clouds. If you have things you need to get done, you'll be fine. And are we turning a corner 60s and 70s next week. A few days are going to be over 70 degrees. Well above that average high of 56 degrees. And if you want to look back the last 31 days, we've had four days above average and that's it. So it's been a long stretch of a lot of cold air for us. There's the developing storm system coming our way. That line is going to. to move into the Dallas Metroplex pretty soon. That could cost some delays, by the way. That's a big hub for American, as you know. Most models, up around an inch or so, the North America model a little bit more bullish, but a good amount of rain is going to be coming our way. And it's going to take
Starting point is 00:14:28 a small bite out of the severe drought that we're dealing with across our area. And not too far away, we have some extreme drought. So this will help reservoir levels are way below full pool. And this is not the time that you want to see that because growing season right around the corner, Sun angle is going to get higher. We're going to get more evaporation. The demand of the lakes is going to pull that water down even more. So we need to get some soaking rate, not just on Sunday, but again, we need to see more of this in the coming weeks. Getting up around 60 or so as we go through the day today, at times we'll see a few passing clouds. The clouds really don't increase until later on tonight. And then by tomorrow, should be a mostly cloudy start, but likely dry. The rain could hold off. A lot of the guidance picking up on slower onset of the rainfall, but by sure, for sure in the afternoon. We're going to have rain coming on in. Pockets of moderate, maybe heavy rain at times, and that lasts all the way through the evening. Now, our model wants to clear us out completely by 8 o'clock in the morning. That could happen, but other models are saying more like the afternoon before we clear out on Monday. 36 into North Hills
Starting point is 00:15:32 right now with some sunshine out there, not much of a breeze at all, but most areas above freezing of 40 in Goldsboro now, 33 into Burlington and Southern Pines currently at 39 degrees. U.N.C. got a big one today against Pitt. 56 as you walk in around 1 o'clock to the Dean Smith Center, tip off at two. And when you head back to your car at about 58 degrees, and if you have plans this evening, think you'll be just fine. It'll be a little bit on the chilly side, but not bad at all. And we'll see clouds increasing as we go later in the evening hours.
Starting point is 00:16:01 Storm system moves away. We'll start clearing out and back to sunshine as we go into our Monday, mid to upper 50s. Even though we'll have more clouds coming in despite that with a wind shift, we're going to get to those mid-60. And that warmer air just upstream is going to be coming away. So we're going to likely get some of those 70s into the Carolinas as we get later in the week. Upper 50s in our northern counties, lower 60s elsewhere. Pretty nice day today. And then tonight as the clouds roll in, it'll act like a blanket.
Starting point is 00:16:30 We're not going to be nearly as cold instead of the 20s. We're in the lower 40s. First of our 7 day, most of this rain tomorrow is at least midday on. I think the morning hours could be dry for you if you're heading out to church. just want to take a walk. Clouds increases. We go into Tuesday and Wednesday. Numbers are increasing as well. And then a couple of days, Thursday and Friday, we're going to be in those lower to middle 70s, despite the cloud cover, make some plans. We'll be back right after this. The race for Congress in North Carolina's fourth district is heating up as the primary draws closer.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Incumbent Congresswoman Valerie Fushi is seeking her third term, while Durham County Commissioner Nita Alam is challenging Fushi. with strong progressive support. Joining us is Kyle Ingram, democracy reporter for the news and observer. Kyle's been covering North Carolina politics, and he's here to break down what voters need to know. Kyle, thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Absolutely. Let's start with the basics. What makes the fourth district race so competitive this year? Yeah, so this is North Carolina's bluest congressional district and includes Durham and Orange County, as well as parts of Wake and Chatham. And this is a rematch. So in 2022, it was alum versus Fushi, just like it is now, and it ended up being the most expensive Democratic primary in North Carolina history. There was millions of dollars flowing in from out of state, from Israel-aligned PACS, from Sam Bank been freed, the crypto billionaire who is now in prison.
Starting point is 00:17:58 So it drew a lot of attention. And now that this rematch is coming, a lot of the campaign is focusing on the issues that happened in 2022, where you have alum criticizing Fushi for accepting all these corporate donations. Okay, so this is a primary. This is Democrat versus DHS. Democrat, how is Nita Alam positioning herself against Congresswoman Fushi? And what or how big a deal are endorsements from figures like Bernie Sanders? Yeah, so both of these candidates have identified themselves as progressives. Fushi and Congress is a part of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She has that caucus's endorsement.
Starting point is 00:18:32 But alum has positioned herself as further to the left and sort of anti-establishment compared to Fushi. She's rejected corporate donations and criticized Fushi for taking them. And while alum does have the backing of progressive U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who she will be at a rally with this week, Fushi has the endorsement of some of North Carolina's top Democrats, including Governor Josh Dine and former Governor Roy Cooper, who's running for Senate right now. Yeah, let's talk about that. Fushi's got strong backing from established political leaders.
Starting point is 00:19:00 How does that influence her campaign strategy? Well, she's saying I'm tested. People know what I am bringing to the table in Congress. She points to the financial support that she's been able to win in Congress and bring back to her district for community projects like sewer and water infrastructure. And she says, you know, all of these elected leaders in North Carolina, they've worked with me before. She's a longtime public servant who worked for the Chapel Hill Police Department. She served in the state senate. So she says, I have the experience to continue serving you in
Starting point is 00:19:29 Congress as compared to alum, who has also had a history of public service on the Durham County Commission, but less of a long career compared to Fushi. Any other races or local issues voters should be watching for as they head to the polls and Tom Tillis, a Republican, long-time senator, is retiring. It looks like the frontrunners are going to be Michael Watley for the Republican nomination and Roy Cooper for the Democratic nomination. But these are packed fields. So voters should keep an eye on all of the candidates who are running for those races
Starting point is 00:19:58 and determine who they want to see get that nomination ahead of the general election in November. For a closer look at the North Carolina 4th District race and what voters need to know ahead of the primary. Check out Kyle's full reporting on their website and Sunday's paper. All right, Joel, thank you. Coming up, state officials investigating voter impersonation scams across North Carolina. The federal government has entered a partial shutdown after members failed to fund the Department of Homeland Security. And inflation drops more than expected in January. Energy costs lead the way. We are Local News. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues next. Right now, live coverage from your local news leader.
Starting point is 00:20:41 breaking stories from overnight and this morning and your first alert forecast here's what's happening where you live this is abcc 11 eyewitness news it's saturday morning 930 here's a live look into downtown raleigh the sun is up but it's a little chilly hopefully it warms up you can get out and enjoy the day so good morning carolina it's saturday february 14th i'm bianca holman you're watching eyewitness news on abc 11 and wherever you stream the top are ahead. But of course we're going to check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart for what we can expect on this love day. It is a love day, right? Yes, it should be every day, though. I think it's really just fine. It's a little chilly early on. It was cold just a little while ago, but warm it up nicely now. We're above freezing in most areas, and we'll get all the way to the low 60s today. Lots of sunshine for you with a few clouds later this afternoon. Yesterday we topped out at 51, which is below the average of 56, so nice to get a little warmer. there's that deficit again continuing to grow. And if you look at the winter months, we're well below where we should be in Raleigh and Fayetteville as well. And it goes beyond this.
Starting point is 00:21:49 I mean, all the way back to September, we've been well below average. So severe drought is with us. Now we need this rain that's coming into play tomorrow. After that will be likely dry once again. Most models at around an inch of rainfall, that seems plausible. North America model a little bullish on the amounts, but a good soaking rain expected. Again, probably midday on tomorrow. I think the early morning hours just cloudy skies.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Out and about today, around 60 or so between 2 and 4 o'clock. I think later evening hours, the clouds will start to increase if you're going to be out tonight with your significant other. 36 degrees of North Hills right now, not much of a breeze at all. It's about a degree warmer than this time yesterday. With 40 in Oxford, 36 now in Raleigh and Fayville currently at 37 degrees. Heading out tonight to maybe or this afternoon. State is hosting Miami there at Lenovo Center walking in around 3 o'clock. at 61, tip-offs at four, and when you head home, little chilly, getting down to those upper 40s.
Starting point is 00:22:45 Make some plans on. Oh, boy, next week looks fantastic. A few days over 70 degrees. More on that coming up in just a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you. Well, just after nine last night, Cruz responded to a house fire on Garland-Sloan Lane in Harnett County. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and propane tanks exploding in the yard. Two dogs were pulled from the home but did not survive. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation. Well, the state board of elections says it's investigating claims of people impersonating election officials. Officials say they've received reports of people going to voters' homes and saying they need to re-register to vote to cast a ballot in future elections. Election officials say it's not true, and it's resulted in confusion from voters and false information submitted to local election boards.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Registering people to vote is not illegal. That's not illegal. What we're looking at is any activity that may be illegal. illegal is impersonating state officials and then providing any county board false information. So state election officials say they're working with the SBI and local prosecutors to investigate these claims. A partial government shutdown now in effect, travelers bracing for long lines at airports, Coast Guard families wondering when the next paycheck will come and hundreds of thousands of federal workers on the job without pay. The stale made over homeland security and immigration
Starting point is 00:24:06 enforcement showing no signs of breaking. ABC's Michelle. Frenzen has the latest. The federal government has officially slipped into a partial shutdown after lawmakers failed to agree on a spending bill. Democrats refusing to approve funding for the Department of Homeland Security unless changes are made to immigration enforcement. We've drawn a hard line in the sand on behalf of the American people, and we're not going to allow the Congress to cross it. ICE needs to be dramatically reformed, period, full stop. ICE operations receiving considerable blowback after the Minneapolis shooting deaths of American citizens, Alex Preti and Renee Good. Democrats are calling for sweeping reforms, including requiring ICE agents to stop wearing masks, display ID, and coordinate with state and local governments, and obtain warrants signed by a judge before making arrests.
Starting point is 00:25:00 But Congress has not been in session, and the halls are now empty. Republicans sent lawmakers home for a week-long holiday reset. President Trump telling ABC's Mary Bruce that he plans to personally get involved in talks. So I am here to protect law enforcement and law, our great police and ICE and Border Patrol and everybody. I'm here to protect them because they're protecting us. Even with the shutdown in effect, ICE operations are expected to continue, thanks to $75 billion in funding from the Big Beautiful Bill Act that passed with GOP-only support, during the summer. But without a deal, most of the department's 272,000 employees, including the Coast Guard,
Starting point is 00:25:46 TSA, and FEMA, will remain on the job without pay. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. We've got our eye on the economy this morning, and the prices we're paying inflation was lower than expected last month. That's according to new data release Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Consumer Price Index shows prices rose 2.4 percent. January from a year earlier and that's down sharply from a 2.7% annual rate in December. The better than expected report is largely driven by the cost of energy falling 1.5% last month and rent prices rising by just 2% over the month prior. The cost of food and groceries also increased by 0.2% and you can put the
Starting point is 00:26:30 ABC 11 price tracker to work for you. Go to ABC11.com search the price tracker then type in your area then select groceries, housing or utilities to see how the cost of living has changed for households just like yours. A Selma man lost thousands through Bitcoin. The Johnson County Sheriff warns of deputy impersonation scams. And a new film connects basketball and the civil rights movement. Hoops, hopes, and dreams to share a different side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The force is strong at a New York toy fair.
Starting point is 00:27:01 We show you the latest Mandalorian gear coming up. Well, first, good morning, Steve. Hey, good morning there, Bianca. Good morning, everybody. everybody most areas now all above freezing. It's going to be a nice day today. We'll see those high temperatures climbing to the lower 60s with plenty of sunshine around. And then tomorrow here comes the rain. All the details after the break. This is first alert weather from ABC 11. I witness news. Welcome back everybody. Good morning to you. Cold star, but we're warming nicely. We're going to get to the upper 50s and low 60s today. Lots of sunshine for you. Maybe a few afternoon clouds, but the clouds really increased later on tonight. Out and about maybe doing some shops. today. Those numbers are going to be around 60 through the afternoon and then coming down as we get later in the evening hours. And then the clouds are going to be increasing. 40 in Oxford now. Same thing in Clinton, 42 in the Goldsboro and Irwin currently at 39 degrees. Heading out to watch the Blue Devils play today against Clemson. This is a midday start. So 11 a.m. will be on the upper 40s as you walk in. And when you head back home, there are 60 degrees with a few clouds. Overnight tonight, the clouds come in. So not nearly as cold. We're back to the 40s for lows. And then tomorrow, 54, maybe a spotty morning shower. It's more likely it's going to be in the afternoon and evening.
Starting point is 00:28:15 That's the lion's share of the rain event tomorrow. So you have plenty of time if you have things you need to get done early in the day. East Coast travel, fine. Don't worry about that snow there in New York. Rain showers heavy at times all the way down into, say, Dallas. That could cause some delays and a level two risk for severe weather across parts there of Louisiana and Texas as well. So far this morning, all the major hubs, though, looking pretty good. Got you 7-8 coming up in just a few minutes, Bianca.
Starting point is 00:28:40 All right, Steve, thank you. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person who impersonated a deputy before scamming a man out of $5,000. The 53-year-old victim from Selma told investigators he received a phone call from a blocked number. The caller claimed the victim missed jury duty, and there's now a warrant for his arrest. So shortly after the victim received a second phone call, but this number perfectly resembled the number for the sheriff's office. And so that's a common practice for scammers who have technology to spoof real numbers. The victim believed the claims were real and paid the scammer nearly $5,000 through a Bitcoin machine. The sheriff's office is now warning people.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Jury duty scams are real, and law enforcement never demands payment of any kind over the phone. Oh, from the court to the civil rights era, a new documentary exploring Dr. King's Love of Basketball. The North Carolina Attorney General hands out Dogwood Awards, Heroes Across Across the South. state recognized for service. And as we head to break, here goes a live look into downtown Raleigh. Looking pretty good on this love day. Get out and enjoy it. So how does basketball drive social change?
Starting point is 00:29:50 The latest episode of On the Red Carpet storyteller's Spotlight dives into the story behind the documentary, Hoops, Hopes, and Dreams. The film's creatives highlight the transformative power of basketball as a catalyst for community connection and social change. Life is about storytelling. If you think about my father's vision of the beloved community, one of the ways that we can create that beloved community is through storytelling.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Hoops, hopes, and dreams is a story about how basketball has been used historically to connect community groups, starting with Dr. King and Ambassador Andrew Young. What really inspired me to join as an executive producer is it gave me an opportunity in showing an expansive part of my father's life. Andrew gets on stage and he says, Did I ever tell you how great of a basketball player I was,
Starting point is 00:30:40 how Dr. King and I used to play basketball? Hearing Andrew Young just mentioned offhandedly a story about hooping with Dr. King, don't just let that go, what is that? To tell story about basketball and politics. That's like the dream team when you think of creativity. And I had heard from Uncle Andy that my father had a mean left hook. I didn't know you could shoot with your left hand.
Starting point is 00:31:01 He said, as I, a lot you don't know about me. You don't have that warm feeling when Dr. King was hooping because you weren't there. You know what it felt like when Omama was doing it. That's what I do! Activism has collaboration as community. You want to use basketball. Sister would never go away as long as we have story tell us. This is a message that doesn't have any boundaries because the place for hoops and dreams is everywhere.
Starting point is 00:31:29 I'm Bernie Say King. My name is Glenn Kino. My name is Jesse Williams. I'm Alexis Feister. And this is the storyteller spotlight. The North Carolina Attorney General presented his Dogwood Awards last night. Jeff Jackson recognized people across the state who's shown exceptional dedication and service to their communities. Among those honored public service officers, including the SBI K-9 unit, who went to Texas following last summer's deadly flooding.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Jackson also recognized former Cumberland County Sheriff Innes Wright, who served as the county's first African-American sheriff. His entire career, he has been guided by the responsibility of keeping people safe, truly caring about his community, keeping the justice system run. He is now retired, deserved to be so, and so congratulations, Sheriff Wright. Also honored during the ceremony to Wake County Sheriff Debutes who saved the life of a teenager. Time to get a check of the weather with Steve Stewart. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:38 Look at this. These folks are having a good time. Lots of sunshine up in the mountains. Good day for skiing because tomorrow's a complete washout with some heavy rain. Again, pretty busy up there right now. They're at Catalucci. Around here today, pretty good, too. We'll be in those lower 60s for highs, a bright day. Hope we get a chance to enjoy it. If you have dinner plans tonight, you'll be just fine. Cloud's increased later on. It'll be a touch chilly tonight, but no big deal. It's a Sunday soaker, especially afternoon and evening. The morning could be okay, but it's a good indoor day for tomorrow. And then our we turning a corner? Here comes some 60s and 70s as we go into next week. Look at the warm midweek all the way through Friday. Then the numbers are going to come down a little bit. But you're looking at it right there about four to five days above average in a row. And if you look at the last 31 days, we've only had four days above average. We've had a lot of cold air around here. So it's going to be a little bit different for us with all that warm. Sh showers and some thunderstorms now getting poised to move into the Dallas Metroplex. That could cost some delays here a little bit later on.
Starting point is 00:33:38 the guidance for this rain tomorrow. About an inch of rain or so. It seems plausible. North America model a little bullish on the amounts, but all in agreement that we're going to get a good soaking rain that will help take a small bite out of the severe drought that we're seeing now. In some areas, seeing extreme drought in the state. So we need to get some soaking rain in here, and this is a start. It's going to take more than just Sunday to get rid of this drought that we're dealing with, though. You can see the banks on all the reservoirs as you're driving by. This is not good to be this low below full pool with growing season right around the corner. The sun angle getting higher. That's going to be more evaporation. So there's going to be more demand on these lakes.
Starting point is 00:34:15 So they'll continue going down. So this rain not tomorrow's going to help, but we need more events like that before the growing season gets here. Around 60 as we go through the afternoon today, not bad at all. Tomorrow starts out cloudy. There could be a spotty morning shower here and there. But I think the lion's share of this event is really as we get going to the afternoon through the evening hours. We'll see rounds of rain even up until around midnight or so. Then we should start seeing things clear out. Clouds could linger in the morning, though, and then eventually we're going to clear out later in the day. Right now we're looking at 36 degrees out at North Hills. Not much of a breeze at all. Most of us in the 30s, but Roxburgh, Oxford, Roanoke Rapids, now all over 40 in Goldsboro also at 42 degrees. Big game for UNC today taking on pit,
Starting point is 00:35:02 56 as you're walking in around 1 o'clock there at Dean Smith Center tip off at 2. And when you head back home, about 57 degrees looking pretty good. If you have date night plans tonight, the evening, a little chilly. We'll get down to the mid-40s as we get to 10 o'clock at night. And clouds will be increasing as well, but no rain. Don't worry about that. The rain's tomorrow. And by Monday, we're clearing out by the afternoon, mid to upper 50s.
Starting point is 00:35:25 Clouds come in, but despite that, a nice little wind shift will boost our temperatures to the mid-60s. And you look upstream, there's a lot more warmth that's going to be coming our way. You're really going to notice that as we get later into the workweek. High temperatures today will be in the low 60s, some upper 50s in our northern counties. Tonight, because the clouds roll in, not nearly as cold instead of 20s, we're back to the low 40s. First alert, seven day, the rain moves in probably later in the day, a spotty morning shower, but the lion's share of this event is afternoon and evening. Monday, we're drying things out.
Starting point is 00:35:57 Clouds increase on Tuesday. But despite that, temperatures are going up. The warmest two days, Thursday and Friday. And despite the cloud cover, looking pretty good with numbers in the low to mid-70s. All right. Looking forward to us, Steve. Thank you. The force is strong at a New York toy fair.
