Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Good morning, Carolina. I'm Sean Coffey in today for Bianca Holman. It is Sunday, February 22nd.
This morning on eyewitness news, we have your first alert to some scattered showers in the triangle.
Our Doppler nets scanning the skies since we time out when that rain stops.
Plus breaking news in Raleigh, two people shot in Glenwood South, the new details coming
into our newsroom overnight.
And calls for action, local Iranians taking to the streets of Raleigh to draw attention
to the dire situation in their home country.
But first, we are taking a live look at the Raleigh skyline on a dreary, wet start to
our Sunday.
You can see the moisture on that camera.
As we look over downtown Raleigh, we are getting a first check of the weather now with
meteorologist Steve Stewart.
Steve. I know you said it's not going to be an all-day driving rain, but kind of a bit of a lousy Sunday.
It is good indoor day. Yeah, the rain we had this morning. It's kind of waning just a little bit in spots there, Sean.
And then we'll get a break and then more showers will come into play as we get later into the afternoon.
As this low starts to wrap up and become an impressive Noreaster. Not seeing rain in the sand hills right now is still damp on the ground.
Got some heavier rain moving up Interstate 85 right now. So again, at times, we'll get some heavier showers.
the winds are going to pick up later today.
The gusts are going to be up there between 30, maybe 40 miles an hour as we get into the late afternoon and early evening hours.
So about 49, but temperatures falling as we go through the day could be a snowflake north and east of the triangle.
Not a concern.
Just something to see in the sky as that colder air rushes in behind it.
As far as the probabilities go as we go through the day, come down a little bit, and then they'll go right back up as we get into the afternoon before coming down again as we go later in the evening.
Here's predictor showing that a little lull in the action as we get into midday or so.
And then more showers will pinwheel around on the backside and low.
Temperatures are going to be coming down.
Winds are going to be coming up.
So the question is, when does it get cold enough?
Will there be any moisture left to see it mixing over with snow or maybe briefly turning over to all snow?
Some models has this a little closer to the triangles, other a little bit farther away.
So north and east of the triangle has the best bet of seeing some snow in the sky,
but we're not concerned about any accumulations.
42 into North Hills right now.
A north breeze at 8.
That's 13 degrees colder than yesterday.
And the rain continues.
30s in our northern counties now,
43 in the Raleigh and Fayetteau currently to 49.
Heading out for this evening to maybe see Hell's Kitchen
should be dry by that time.
Temperatures falling to the 30s,
but the wind will make it feel colder.
Bundle up with a heavy jacket and keep it handy for the next couple of days.
More on that coming up in just a few minutes.
Sean?
All right, Steve.
Thank you.
Breaking news in Raleigh, two people hurt in a shooting in Glenwood South.
It happened around two this morning on West North Street, not far from Hibernian Irish Pub.
Both victims were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.
So far, there is no word on any arrests.
More breaking news in Durham, power is restored after a crash and gas leak overnight.
The fire department says a van went into a building on East Main Street around two this morning,
hitting a commercial gas meter.
Two people in that van were hurt.
Emergency crews were on scene for hours downtown, working.
to remove that gas from the building. That response also led to several road closures downtown this
morning. This morning, two people are facing charges in connection with a multi-state retail theft ring.
According to the Durham County Sheriff's Office, 21-year-old Jefferson DeNartes Chavez and 19-year-old
Ednailsson-Dinartis Chavez are accused of stealing from retailers across the Carolinas and Virginia.
Deputies arrested the two yesterday at a home on Liberty Street in Durham after an eight-month
investigation. Officials say they found multiple stolen goods, including power tools and TVs,
both suspects currently being held at the Durham County Detention Center. Also in Durham, an investigation
to what sparked this fire on Board Street. The fire department sharing this video from the scene
yesterday afternoon. Officials say they were able to put out the flames quickly and rescue a dog
who was trapped inside an apartment. No one was hurt but 13 adults and four children were displaced
in that fire. The Red Cross is assisting them at this time.
This morning, the Raleigh Police Department Foundation showing the equipment that officers were wearing during that shootout with a Garner murder suspect earlier this week where two officers were shot.
The foundation shared pictures on Facebook of a helmet and shield that were hit by the gunfire.
The suspect, 26-year-old Solomon Owens, was also injured during that shootout.
He is charged with murder in the death of Joey Adams, who was found shot to death in his car on timber drive and Garner earlier this month.
Owens faces additional charges for that shootout with officers and he is being held in jail on no bond.
This morning as the U.S. military prepares for possible strikes against Iran.
Thousands of people in the war-torn country are filling the streets marking the 40th day of morning for those killed in recent protests.
Locally, Iranians here in the Triangle also rallied on Saturday.
One group drove from Breyer Creek to downtown with the former Iranian flags on their cars.
Their goal was to raise awareness about what they say is.
the dire need for U.S. intervention in the country.
John Dowding talked with organizers and has more.
We need help. Please help and please be our voice and support us.
An urgent plea from Iranians in the triangle.
The only message I have for all people, especially in the United States,
to just help and support the people of Iran.
They really need that.
Dozens gathered calling for an end to the Iranian regime
and freedom for their loved ones still in the country,
as protests in Iran continue.
A few friends got shot and got killed, so that's why I'm here to be their voice.
It comes as President Trump is out with a stern warning for Iranian leaders as both sides negotiate a deal over a new Iranian nuclear agreement.
We're either going to get a deal or it's going to be unfortunate for them.
Back at home, Iranians and Raleigh urging the Trump administration to act.
We want to be our people's voice and we want American government.
man, just stop telling help he's on the way and act right now.
President Trump act now, please.
Dozens of local Iranians gathered for a car rally to make their voices heard,
displaying what they say is the true flag of Iran, the flag flown before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The group started at the regal cinemas in Briar Creek, driving down U.S. 70 and ending at the Marbles IMAX theater downtown.
Iranians share a message for their loved ones at home.
We're going to be, we're going to our own of your own,
we're not only, 8 million Iranis, out of the country,
with you, have you, as well as we're with you.
We're with you, we're with our hushy.
That was John Dowding with that report.
Meantime, ABC News reporting more than 7,000 protesters
have been killed in Iran over the last month.
The people we spoke with tell us they worry the longer it takes for the U.S. to help,
the more danger millions in Iran could be under.
could be under. Breaking overnight, a North Carolina trooper dies in the line of duty. Highway
Patrol says master trooper Stein Davis lost control of his car and crashed on Highway 130 in
Robeson County. The cause of that crash is now under investigation. Attorney now to a traffic
alert in West Raleigh, the ramp closure that's happening on the belt line and when work is expected
to be finished. Plus, QuiltCon at the Raleigh Convention Center, the final day of festivities
today. And later, customers, once again, the Chapel Hill restaurant's long recovery from storm damage,
but first, we're getting a check of the weather with Steve. Okay, thank you very much there. Sean,
good morning, everybody. We have rain out there right now. This is the back edge of it. There'll be
a little break in the action that more showers will come into play later on, and temperatures are
dropping from the 40s to near 50 down into the 30s later today. All the details after the break.
This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11 eyewitness news. Welcome back, everybody. Good morning to you. It's
been raining most of the morning in many areas. We'll get a little break and there more showers this afternoon. Temperatures are going to fall from the 40s that you're seeing right now. It gets colder. The winds are going to pick up as well. Might even see a few snowflakes mixed in, mainly north and east of the triangle and really not a concern. There you see the showers we've had this morning moving on by. There's the back edge, but we're going to get some moisture wrapping around. That's low pressure as it really intensifies as it moves up the coast. Heading out for today, notice the temperatures are going to hold if dot drop a little bit through the afternoon.
Still some rain and then once we get later on those rain chances dropping quickly and skies are going to start to clear out.
30s up around Roxburgh and Oxford, 46 in the Irwin-Faill, 49 degrees at this hour.
Heading out to see the late show there at the Lenovo center of a monster jam.
41 when you walk in should be dry at that time and then 34 when you head home, but the wind will still be elevated.
It's going to feel colder, so heavier coats necessary.
The northeast is going to be a mess, especially later today.
some heavy bands of snow we're going to push in there to New York City.
Look at from north of Boston all the way down to Cape May, a blizzard warning in effect,
with 12 to 18 inches of snow possible in the city itself there in New York could see well over a foot of snow,
maybe flirting with two feet in a few areas.
So far this morning, though, the major hubs are looking just fine.
Got your 7.8 coming up in just a few minutes, Sean.
All right, Steve, we'll see you soon.
Thanks.
A highway ramp closure is expected to end today in Wake County.
Crews have been working on the Beltline all weekend forcing the ramp from 440 West onto Western Boulevard to close.
Weather permitting, it is expected to reopen this afternoon, but until then, detours are in place.
Today is the final day for QuiltCon at Raleigh Convention Center.
The four-day event is one of the largest modern quilting events in the world.
It features a quilt show, community outreach quilt and special exhibits.
QuiltCon hosted close to 600 quilt displays this year from all across the nation.
A new public health center in Wake County, the building opening to residents tomorrow.
Plus, drama in Cumberland County after the sudden firing of a town manager details on the next council meeting this week.
And that massive winter storm, Steve just alluded to barreling towards the northeast, the preparations now for the heavy snow and high winds heading their way.
We're turning now to breaking news in Florida, the Secret Service killing a man who tried to get into Mar-a-Lago.
These are live pictures near that scene in Palm Beach.
Officials say that man in his early 20s was spotted near the north gate of President Trump's property
and was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and fuel can.
Agents confronted the man and shot him dead.
No law enforcement was hurt.
President Trump was at the White House at the time.
Happening tomorrow, the Wake County Public Health Center reopens at its new location.
The new center is located on Swinburne Street about a half mile from the old building.
Services include dental care, a women's prenatal clinic, STD testing, and more.
The new center will be open weekdays from 8.30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Tomorrow, Cumberland County residents can speak out about the sudden firing of Spring Lake Town manager John Rory.
The town holding its first meeting since counselors voted last week to terminate Rory's job.
They tell eyewitness news it was because of high property taxes and problems with the town's infrastructure.
Rory's abrupt dismissal has left the community and Springlake's
mayor upset. He was fired with no transparency. Why was he fired? They won't nobody say.
I am concerned that this sets of precedence for backdoor dealings, and I am extremely concerned
that we are hiring a town manager that has no local government experience.
Eyewitness news reached out to Rory but has not received a response. Meantime, Dennis English has
been named Springlake's interim town manager. Covering the Carolinas investigators are searching for
a plant worker after an explosion at a feed mill in Hertford County. Officials say they were
called to the Purdue Feed Mill plant early Saturday morning after reports of a fire. It was later
determined an explosion had caused that fire. Four workers were on site at the time and one worker
is still unaccounted for. The cause of that explosion is still under investigation. This morning,
residents along the East Coast are preparing for a major winter storm. Both New York and New Jersey
already declaring states of emergency urging everyone to stay home and
and off the roads. Here's ABC's Alison Kosick with the latest.
More than 50 million people are bracing for heavy snow and high winds as a powerful
nor'easter moves into the East Coast today. I don't have snowblowers to offer anyone,
but people coming in for shovels and plenty of de-oison products. The forecast now says
some areas could see as much as one to two feet of snow. A state of emergency declared in at least
22 counties in New York.
This is going to be a brutal blizzard.
In New York City, thousands of workers with the Department of Sanitation are on alert.
Blizzard conditions expected in the city for the first time since 2017.
New Yorkers can expect that Monday morning commute will be extremely hazardous
with heavy snowfall and peak winds coinciding to create slippery conditions and greatly reduced visibility.
New Jersey's governor declaring a state of emergency starting at noon today,
urging people to stay home.
We need to be prepared.
We need to be safe.
Get water.
Get all of your charging done
with your devices.
Stay off the roads.
Officials warning the incoming system
could cause power outages
with winds up to 60 miles per hour
along the coast and coastal flooding.
The coast, you know,
will get the brunt of this storm.
Please take this storm seriously.
This blizzard hitting the northeast
less than a month after a storm
wallop the region with more than a foot of snow in some places. That storm led to the cancellation of
20,000 flights across the country. The major airlines are offering travel waivers for impacted airports.
Travelers should expect cancellations and delays through at least Wednesday. Allison Kosick
ABC News, New York. And Steve Stewart, joining us now for the latest on our forecast. Steve,
this rain we're seeing today is actually the same system you were saying. I know you were talking about
maybe a little snow in our forecast, but nothing for people to want that. I just talked to
Brittany Bell up there in New York City, and she was saying they're going for in this city
about 18 to 24 inches potential. So that's big. That is big. That's going to cause some issues,
for sure. All right, we have cloudy skies and wet out there with showers most of the morning
hours. Still have some rain out there. Sure, the radar coming up. So it's going to be wet
and the wind's going to pick up. It's breezy now, but wait till later. The gusts could be between
30 and 40 miles an hour. Mixing with snow, yeah, for some. Not going to be an issue. I'll
show you that coming up like January tomorrow and Tuesday numbers in the 40s for highs but
tomorrow's wind is going to make it feel like the 30s so bundle up and then more rain chances
yeah later in the week it looks like Thursday night into Friday mornings are best bet as that next
front's going to be coming away with more rain we have rain now pockets of some heavier showers
going on up interstate 85 this morning temperatures are in the 30s and 40s there might even be a
little bit of sleet or some snow mixed in there already but nothing of concern and there
see into Chatham County with some rain as well, but that's the back edge. You don't see anything
coming our way. Our moisture is going to come in from the north later on. We call that wrap
around moisture as that low really starts to intensify along our coast. So in the afternoon,
we'll see another batch of showers coming into play and then temperatures are going to be dropping.
Now, is it dropping fast enough that we'll get a mix of snow? I think the farther northeast will
live the better chance. But look at those winds between 3 and 9 p.m. These are gusts, not sustained,
But still, that's pretty impressive later on for today.
Take a look now.
Here's predictor showing the quiet time midday.
And then we'll start seeing some moisture wrapping around the backside as that low starts to intensify along our coasts and likely just going to be rain.
But by the time the cold enough air gets here, a lot of the moisture is gone.
So yeah, there could be a brief changeover to some snow.
It's more of a novelty.
In these areas, we could see some snowflakes flying, but little to likely no accumulation.
That's going to be up closer to the Virginia border.
pushing into Virginia as well.
42 into North Hills right now.
The North breeze at eight miles an hour.
Temperature has been going down this morning.
37 in Oxford, 49 into Fayetteville,
and that breeze makes a feel colder out there for sure.
Meantime, they're heading out later on tonight.
We will see the sky's clearing,
temperatures dropping.
These are feels like temperatures because the breeze
is still elevated, but wind chills could get down
to the low 20s so that nor'easter causes issues up to the north.
We're gonna be dealing with some afternoon clouds
around, might have some sun early,
and then some afternoon clouds, but the breeze is going to make it feel like the mid-30s in the afternoon.
Less breeze, still cold as we go into our Tuesday with some late-day clouds.
The coldest airs to the north.
Now, this is the North American model.
It's a little bit bullish on snowfall totals, but still, you get the idea.
This could be a significant storm heading up to the northeast for today, tonight, and into tomorrow.
40s to near 50 today, but again, temperatures falling.
Any snowflakes mixing in is mainly north and east of the triangle late today into the.
the evening and then clearing out overnight tonight and cold again as those numbers are going to fall all the way down into the 20s.
First alert 70 afternoon clouds feels like mid-30s on our Monday.
Tuesday less of a breeze still cold. Wednesday clouds increase.
A risk of a shower Thursday.
The more likely a scenario is Thursday night will get some good rain maybe heavy at times clearing out on Friday.
And then next weekend, not bad in the 60s and by next Sunday, which is March 1st, by the way, could be flirting with 70.
That's something I want to hear, Steve. Thank you. The Triangle's recovery from Tropical Storm Chantal,
the Chapel Hill restaurant reopening to customers seven months later.
A beloved Chapel Hill restaurant that made it through Tropical Storm Chantal last summer
has reopened its doors to customers again. ABC 11's Tom George shows us how their long road
to recovery is finally paying off.
Stepping inside Kipos.
The Alecichan represents a timeless ability to have faith and believe in.
is taking a journey to owner Georgios Paccatsias' native griefs.
The place is pretty much reborn.
The kitchen, the wood-fired grill, the bar back open.
Of course, we brought back all new equipment, all new finishes.
A far cry from what it looked like when Chantal hit,
the water rising as high as six feet.
We could have had a beautiful Greek taverna by the island,
so you only swim there.
That could have been possible.
It's been a tough past year.
Last summer, floodwaters tore through Orange County,
Tropical storm Chantal devastating multiple homes and flooding businesses in the East Gate Shopping Center in Chapel Hill, including Kipos.
It's been a long road to rebuild.
We didn't have as much luck with the insurance that we'd like to have, but we were committed to bringing this restaurant back because it was very important.
One of the only things that survived the flood, these family photos from Greece.
Of course, this restaurant when I opened it, it was honoring the ancestors and they were more resilient than I will ever be.
So that's the least I can do is to make sure that this restaurant comes back.
And today, finally getting to put aside some of that toughness and resilience and just celebrate.
Extremely exciting.
So exciting, I can be doing jumping jacks through the ceiling, through the roof.
In Chapel Hill, Tom, Georgia, ABC 11, I witness news.
Coming up, a deadly crash on the Raleigh Beltline, police now identifying the driver and victim.
Plus, speaking out against gun violence, the vigil happening in Durham as the community searches for solutions.
And Duke defeats top-ranked Michigan.
The new reaction after last night's big upset in college basketball.
Stay with us.
Good morning.
Coming up on this week, the Supreme Court delivered a fatal blow to President Trump sweeping tariffs.
The White House is already pursuing other options, but will these new tariffs have the same teeth?
We'll break down the ruling and be joined by the administration's top trade official, Jameson Greer.
Plus, I sat down with Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro, who was at the White House with other governors,
as Trump got the tariff news.
And after four years of war,
a heart-wrenching story of the resilience
of one Ukrainian child.
All that, plus our roundtable is coming up on this week.
Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader,
breaking stories from overnight and this morning,
and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11-I Witness News.
Here is a live look over downtown Durham this morning.
see the water on our camera. It has been a wet start across much of the triangle in our viewing area this morning. And we are expecting some more rain throughout the day.
Good morning, Carolina. It is Sunday, February 22nd. I'm Sean Coffey in today for Bianca Holman. You are watching eyewitness news here on ABC 11. And wherever you stream, we'll have the top stories and all our day's news just ahead. But first, we're checking in with meteorologist Steve Stewart. Steve, kind of a almost like a windshield wiper effect here with the temperature is the last few days. I mean, I was golfing on Friday. Here we are expecting.
other blast of winter. A few days can I want that heavy coat for sure. Today it starts. I mean,
you're feeling it now. Temperatures been going down. Wind's been coming up. We've had showers all
morning. And you can see the back edge is moving in now. But as that area of low pressure continues
to strengthen, it is going to bring more moisture in from the north. We're going to see what we
call wrap around moisture coming in giving us some more rain. Pockets of some heavier showers out
there in spots. Sandhills not getting anything now, but the ground is basically wet because
of all the rain this morning.
Notice too later this afternoon
and those winds are gonna pick up
as that low starts to really
intensify along our coast.
That tightens a gradient.
So we're gonna have some wind
to be dealing with later on for today.
It's gonna pull in some colder where
the temperatures are gonna be going down.
Might get a couple of snowflakes mixed in
on the back side of this.
This is more of a novelty than anything.
And you can see the precipitation
probability is really going up
between one and about four o'clock.
So we have some downtime in many areas
between now and then in those
Towers lifting to the north and then we're going to get that moisture wrapping around.
The wind's coming in from the north and the west.
And likely we don't get cold enough until most of the moisture is gone.
But eventually we could see a little bit of snow.
And the farther northeast you live, the better chance.
This is not an accumulating snow.
Ground is too wet and too warm for that matter.
42 in the north hills with a north breeze at eight miles an hour.
37 Oxford, 41 Chapel Hill.
We started this morning at about three, four in the morning with temperatures around 50.
We've been going down ever since them.
Hell's Kitchen, if you're heading out to that, about 40 as you're walking in, 34 and clear as you head home, but it'll be breezy.
So it's going to feel even colder than that.
And it's going to be a cold night tonight and cold through Tuesday.
More on that coming up in just a few minutes, Sean.
All right, Steve, thank you.
Not a breaking news in Florida, authorities now giving an update after the Secret Service killed a man who tried to get into Mar-a-Lago.
You can see a member of law enforcement there is addressing the media there at Palm Beach.
Officials say that man was in his early 20s and was spotted near the north gate of President Trump's property and was carrying a shotgun and a fuel can.
Agents confronted that man and shot him dead.
No law enforcement hurt in that incident.
President Trump was at the White House at the time.
Stay with eyewitness news for the latest on this developing story throughout the day.
A new details now about a deadly crash on the Raleigh Belt line.
One man is dead and another now facing charges.
It started as a crash Friday night on 440 between Glenwood Avenue and Lake Bay.
Boone Trail. As that started to clear, investigators say Jack Neville was speeding and hit the back of
another car. That car hit and killed Eduardo Valdez, who was standing outside his car that was
involved in the initial crash. Neville is facing multiple charges, including misdemeanor death
by vehicle. In Fayetteville, a man is facing charges after police say he was involved in a deadly
hit and run. It happened Friday night at the intersection of Ramsey Street and Fernwood Drive.
Police say Roberto Coton Jr. was turning left on Fernwood and hit motorcyclist Ian Gaskins. Gaskins died at the scene. Cotone drove off but was later arrested on multiple charges. He's being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center and is due in court tomorrow.
Turning now to Durham where community members held a vigil for those who have lost their lives to gun violence.
Brian Curry, Lawrence Hunt Jr.
Last night's event comes after multiple deadly shootings in the Bull City in the past couple of weeks.
Many involving young people.
The community members, they are called for peace and a discussion about the ways to stand up against gun violence.
Durham police say there have been nine homicides so far this year.
On Friday, Mayor Leah Williams announced the city is partnering with the University of Maryland's Violence Reduction Center to develop anti-violence strategies.
Now to college basketball at Duke's upset on the hardwood.
The Duke Blue Devils celebrating this morning after beating 10.
top ranked Michigan. Those two teams facing off at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Our Trayvon Miles was there and has new post-game reaction.
For as much as Duke has found themselves on the wrong side of this late-game execution stuff
for the last couple of years, last night against Michigan, they were perfect.
Key plays down the stretch, continuing to do their thing and making clutch free throws late.
They end up with a 68 to 63 win over the number one team in the country.
These guys have been studs in their games.
They have such toughness.
And so I think there's a complete misperception.
We're not going to be perfect.
We're not going to win every game.
But these guys have won close games, big games.
They've got in leads.
They've kept leads.
And we're going to keep growing and learning with that.
You know, all my mind is making win and play.
I'm our team win.
I feel like I did that tonight, you know.
And if I do that, you know, my talent, my game's going to show
just for making winning plays. That's what makes me great.
I think overall is a great team win, tough, hard, physical game.
I think overall as a team, we all made winning plays.
No, I definitely felt like a tournament game, obviously going against Michigan,
and then having a neutral sight and the environment,
both Michigan and Duke fans, it was a great environment to play him.
John Shire said he didn't know if his team would be back up here for the regional,
but as it stands, Duke has an inside track to the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament.
From here in Washington, D.C., Trayvon Miles, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
New this morning, a big change at the airport as the partial government shutdown continues.
The Department of Homeland Security saying it is suspending TSA pre-check and global entry.
Secretary Christie Noem, saying her agency will prioritize the general traveling population at airports and ports of entry.
DHS funding shutdown started last week as the White House and Senate Democrats negotiate changes to immigration and customs enforcement.
Recycling items in your house, the competition wrapping up today in Raleigh.
Plus, testing your luck the new lottery game debuting today in North Carolina.
And still ahead the funeral plans this week for civil rights leader, the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
But first, good morning, Steve.
Good morning there, Sean. Good morning, everybody.
Still some rain out there, mainly from the triangle northward.
It's kind of lifting in this direction.
We get a little bit of dry time than later this afternoon.
More showers roll in.
Temperatures are going to be going down and the wind is going to be picking up.
going to be picking up all the details after the break.
This is first alert weather from ABC 11. I witness news.
Welcome back, everybody. Good morning to you. It's been wet all morning. Still some rain out there now.
We're going to get more showers around this afternoon. Temperatures going down.
Wind's going to be going up. We could even in with some snowflakes north and east of the triangle,
which would be a novelty, not a concern. But there you see the back edge of the showers moving on out.
That low is really going to intensify along the coast and really cause some issues as it travels to the north.
We're going to be stuck in the 40s and the numbers actually coming down a little bit.
Afternoon showers around.
And then as we get into the evening, we should be clearing out and the temperatures are going down and the breeze stays elevated.
41 right now in Roanoke Rapids, 37, Oxford, 42 in the Raleigh in Fayetteville at 48 degrees.
The breeze makes a feel colder, of course.
Head now to Monster Jam tonight, 41 before, which about 5.30 or 6 o'clock when you walk in when you head home about 34 degrees.
By then, should be clear.
But it's still going to be breezy.
downright cold. Headaches if you're traveling to the northeast with this nor'easter. Lots of snow,
significant amount of snow. Blizzard warnings in effect from Cape May all the way up north of Boston
and inland of that, including Philadelphia. Winter storm warnings could see close to a foot of snow
there. Other areas could see one foot, maybe a foot and a half or more. It's a significant storm up
there. So far, though, this morning, the major hubs are looking just fine. It won't be later today,
though. Got your seven-day forecast in just a few minutes, Sean. All right, Steve, thanks.
Today is the final day to apply for Raleigh's annual Trashion competition.
Raleigh's solid waste service looking for people to showcase garments and accessories crafted from recycled materials.

President Trump's new global tariffs after Friday's pivotal Supreme Court ruling.
Plus, giving new business owners a head start, the new space now open in downtown Durham.
And making prom more affordable for families, the annual event that's returning to APEX this month.
Those stories coming up.
President Trump announcing he's increasing the global tariffs to 15%.
Trump made that announcement yesterday,
a day after he imposed 10% global tariffs.
It came after the Supreme Court ruled Friday
that his sweeping tariffs violated federal law.
The president coined that decision, quote,
ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily un-American.
At least 2,000 companies have already sued the Trump administration
to get refunds for their original tariffs.
This morning, there's a new way to do business
in Durham, Market on Market Street, officially opening its doors after months of planning
and preparations. It's a new retail incubator space that aims to make owning a retail space
in downtown Durham both affordable and accessible to everyone. There are three new shops to start,
and business owners say they're thankful for the opportunity. I want to be downtown. I mean,
if you're going to be part of the city, you want to be downtown. For the longest time,
it's something that I was just running as a single business owner out of my office. So this
particular opportunity just gives me the space and the capability to really expand into a lot more
products that I just didn't have the space to do before.
Selected businesses receive a year-long lease and will receive hands-on coaching as well.
Prom season is just around the corner now.
For families who need a little help, the prom shop at Apex United Methodist Church is back.
As Amber Rupinda shows us, their mission is making sure that every girl can experience that big night
with the perfect dress at no cost.
teens. It's a rite of passage. Everybody remembers their prom. Everybody remembers the dress.
We want every girl to have that experience. But with the cost, that memory can come with a hefty
price tag. The average cost of a prom dress now is over $600, and that's just not doable for a lot
of families. That's where the prom shop at Apex United Methodist Church steps in. This is Giovanni.
$600. For 18 years, a church gym has transformed into a full-scale prom boutique.
When these girls come through these doors, we want them to feel like they're walking into that boutique to get that $800 dress.
With nearly 3,000 donated dresses.
We feel very fortunate that so many of our boutiques across North Carolina have supported this mission and donated so many new dresses with the tags still on them.
This year, we are getting close to 3,000 dresses to choose from.
Hundreds of volunteers, just like Brandy Sadler, helped to create a head-to-to-to-experience.
dress, shoes, jewelry, makeup, and any accessories all at no cost.
You know, we're really trying to change lives here.
It's not just about the dress.
It's about letting even families know that there are people out there who care.
Donations are still being accepted through February 23rd with a special need for plus-sized dresses and shoes, sizes 10 and up.
And anyone in North Carolina can attend no appointment or proof of income required.
Every girl deserves to go to prom and she deserves to look beautiful doing it.
it. Donations of like new dresses, accessories, jewelry, and shoes are still being accepted
through Monday, February 23rd, and you can drop them off at Apex United Methodist Church,
twisted scissors in Carrie, the salon, and Generation Salon and Day Spa in North Raleigh.
And the Apex Prom Shop runs Friday and Saturday, February 27th through 28th.

All right, for Biscuit fans, today is the final day to grab a huge.
special heart-shaped boberry biscuit at Bojangles, the fast food chain offering that fan favorite for Valentine's Day.
Part of the proceeds being donated to the Hardest Yard Foundation, which was set up by former Panthers player Greg Olson to support kids who are getting treatment for heart problems.
So what great cause there.
All right, we are turning to the weather now. Steve, kind of a slop of a Sunday year, a lot of rain and getting a little bit cold.
But, I mean, we shouldn't complain because further up the coast, I mean, they're dealing with some serious.
It's going to be big.
It's a big noreaster.
I mean, it's going to cause a lot of problems for all the big cities from Philly, New York, up to Boston, all that area up the 95 corridor, a bit of a mess.
We have a mess, too. Just what rain, though, and it's been cold, too, as we go through the morning hours.
Temperature is actually going to come down a little bit later today.
Could be mixing with snow, north and east of the triangle, a novelty, not a problem, and the wind's noticeable now, but it's going to pick up later today.
More like January tomorrow and Tuesday.
Matter of fact, tomorrow feels like temperatures are likely in the mid-30s and a frost around.
early Tuesday morning. And then more rain chances later in the week. Yeah, I mean, there's a front
coming. And the timing now looks to be more like Thursday night is the best opportunity for
most of us to get the rain out there now. Still some showers just south of Durham. That's a moderate,
even heavy shower that's lifting in. Going to be in the airport soon and pushing all the way
up into Lewisburg, but a lot of areas missing out. So again, the rain coverage has come down
a little bit. And there you see the backside. But when that low starts wrapping up along the
coast, we're going to get moisture pulled in on the back side. So coming in from the north,
we'll get those showers as we go into the two, three, four o'clock time frame, expect to have
the showers at that time. And the winds are going to pick up as well, too, as that low intensifies,
that increases the pressure gradient across the state. So the winds will pick up. We could have
gusts between 30 to maybe up to 40 miles an hour. There you see the numbers with some spotty
showers. As we go into the afternoon, I see how the rain kind of fills in a little bit. And then as we
start to see the moisture pulling away.
Temperatures really starting to fall.
Is there going to be enough moisture left when we get cold
enough to see it mixing over with snow?
So we think there could be some and the best bet's
going to be northeast of the triangle,
but not a concern.
It's just something to see in the sky with some flakes falling.
Little to no accumulation.
I'm really focused on the no accumulation.
Any of the accumulating snow is likely
going to be well off to our north.
So in the meantime, 42 degrees at North Hills right now.
It's cold with a breeze out of the north.
That's 13 degrees colder than yesterday.
And of course, we have the rain, too.
30s up around Roxburgh on Oxford,
46 and Irwin and Fayville currently at 48 degrees.
Heading out this evening.
Now the sky should clear and the winds are going to stay elevated.
So it feels like temperatures at midnight getting all the way down to 22 degrees.
Pretty darn cold if you're out later on tonight.
There's the nor'easter for tomorrow.
We'll have some afternoon clouds might start with sun,
but that breeze is going to make it feel like the mid-30s in the afternoon.
Less breeze, some late day clouds, but still rather cold.
We're on the fringe of that cold where the coldest air stays well off to the north.
But keep in mind, a significant snow event up there.
Now, this is the North American model, a little bit more bullish,
but we could easily see foot plus in a lot of the big cities.
So we get rain today, temperatures falling this afternoon.
North and east could mix with some snowflakes,
clearing out and cold tonight as those low temperatures get down to the 20s.
First alert, 7-day, 46 tomorrow.
afternoon clouds. The breeze stays elevated, so it feels like mid-30s. Tuesday, less breeze,
still cold. More clouds on Wednesday. Thursday will get a shower late in the day, but most of
the rain, I think, will be on Thursday night. That's the best timing for now. Clearing out on
Friday a little damp early, but we moderate as we head into next weekend. And by next Sunday,
which is March 1st, Sean, can be flirting with 70. All right, that's more like it, I'll say.
Thanks, Steve.

They're all very good. She's in episode six. It's very, very good. I like episode three because it's sort of the reintroduction to the bunker.
