Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Good morning, Carolina. I'm Tamara Scott.
It's Sunday, February 8th, this morning on eyewitness news.
We received your message, and we understand.
A family begging for answers and a mysterious message claimed by.
kidnappers. What investigators are now rushing to verify. And breaking right now, firefighters are
still battling a multi-along fire on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville. Major road closures ahead. Plus,
a driver runs, leaving a passenger behind why troopers are still hunting for him this morning.
It's a great day to be at Tar Hill, as the Tar Hills take on Franklin Street last night. You can
see they're celebrating the UNC win over the Blue Devils and the first Tobacco Road showdown of
the season. What happened after?
after UNCB Duke ahead.
And Super Bowl 60 is here with plenty of North Carolina
on the field.
The Seahawks, Pat, and a Tar Hill QB under the lights.
And history on ice, Team USA stacking on medals,
the Olympic highlights you do not want to miss.
But let's take a live look at the Raleigh skyline this morning.
It is beautiful, a wonderful sunrise there.
But I'll tell you what, Steve, we're gonna check in
with First Alert Meteor.
Steve Stewart, I have beef with that groundhog.
Who said six weeks more of winter?
Yeah.
We're feeling it.
Yeah.
We're really feeling it.
Well, it won't feel like it on Tuesday.
Oh, yeah.
Something to look forward to.
But you got to work.
So put me outside.
Listen, that's still going to be a cold one today, about 36 for the high temperature.
And the clouds are rolling on in, maybe even a flurry or two, but it wouldn't be a big deal.
Just a novelty.
We do anticipate the air is so dry.
You can see this is a loft here with the radar is depicting here.
This is not reaching the ground, but don't be surprised if a flurry or two pops up.
It's later in the week.
a chance at showers on Friday and that could even be a wintery mix and we'll talk more about that coming up in a little bit.
Meantime, good indoor day. Just watch the game or catch up on your favorite shows because it's cold outside and a lot of clouds will be with us.
As we get to the evening hours, those clouds will move out and we'll start to clear out.
And predict are showing just that. Cloudy skies through the afternoon. And then as we get into the evening hour, starting to thin those clouds out and then clear overnight for tonight.
Right now we're looking at cloudy skies out at North Hills at 23 degrees. It's cold with a North
breeze at about six miles an hour. Area wide, we're seeing those temperatures about the same as well.
Very cold. We'll get down to around 27 by 10 o'clock tonight under fair skies by that time.
Couple days could be over 60 degrees this week. More on that coming up in a few minutes, Tamara.
Looking forward to it, Steve. Thank you. We're breaking overnight in Fayetteville,
firefighters are battling a multi-alarm commercial fire on Ramsey Street right now. The fire is at
Fayetteville moving in storage near Law Road. All lanes of Ramsey Street are shut down between
law in MacArthur. Crews expect this firefight and the road closures to last into and through the
morning, so we'll let you know as soon as we learn more. In Harnett County, a driver is on the run
after a crash that left a passenger injured. Firefighters found a Cadillac deep in the woods
near Titan Roberts and Ross Rhodes and Irwin. Troopers say the driver ran from the scene.
The passenger was found inside the vehicle and take it to the hospital. Investigators say the
car left the road, hit several trees, and one fell on top of the car.
State troopers are still searching for that driver.
And in Wake County, the Kerry Police Department is investigating a large house fire that left a family without a home.
It happened around 445 Saturday afternoon in the 1,000 block of Daybreak Bluff Drive.
Officials believe the fire may have started in the back deck before spreading to the roof.
They were able to contain the fire, but there was significant amount of damage to the home, so there's no word yet on the cause of that fire.
Now, it's been a week since Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home.
family is pleading for her safe return as investigators race to verify a new message.
ABC's Johnny Fernandez has more.
Over a week ago, Savannah Guthrie's elderly mother Nancy was last seen at home.
Today, Savannah and her siblings are making a heartfelt plea for her safe return, sending
a message to whoever may have taken her.
We received your message and we understand.
In a new Instagram post, the family is appealing for their mother's safe return.
The message coming after a Tucson television station received a new message claiming to be the kidnappers.
The station said it contains something the senders seemed to think they will prove to investigators
they're the same people who sent the first note.
The one that mentioned Nancy Guthrie's Apple Watch and possible damage at her home demanded Bitcoin
and included two deadlines.
The first has come and gone.
The second is just two days away.
The FBI in Pima County Sheriff's Department said investigators are actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity.
Investigators seem towing a car from the residence overnight following another thorough search of Nancy's home.
If the ransom note talks about specific things in the house, like things broken, things moved, cameras removed or smashed, whatever it might be, if that's the case, they're going to go back and double check.
they've got to see if it matches what the bad guys are telling them.
President Trump's suggesting he expects something definitive from the investigation soon.
But so far, investigators have not named any suspects in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.
Johnny Fernandez, ABC News, New York.
The Washington Post publisher and CEO, Will Lewis, is stepping down.
The news comes just days after the post laid off about one third of its staff that included at least 300,
journalist in the newsroom. Lewis wrote in a note to staff that after two years of transformation
at the Washington Post, now was the right time for me to step aside. He thanked post owner Jeff
Bezos for his support in leadership throughout the tenure. The paper says chief financial officer
Jeff Donoforio will take over as acting publisher and CEO. And North Carolina DMV offices across
the state are no longer accepting appointments three months in advance. Instead of letting people book a
time slot up to 90 days ahead of time. The agency now makes appointments just seven days in
advance. Officials say new appointments are available at midnight each weekday, except when seven
days ahead falls on a holiday. Now, Raleigh is calling itself the single capital of North Carolina.
My Valentine's Day just around the corners. Now, tickets are on sale for an art in bloom and
they'll go fast. I don't want to make it about that because Carolina, they play the
a great game. And UNC wins it at the buzzer. Then the night turns chaotic. Court storming
controversy follows the final shot. But first, good morning, Steve. Good morning there, Tamara. Good
morning, everybody. A lot of clouds moving in. Now it's going to look like that pretty much the
entire day. Temperatures are in the 20s, so we're out of the teens. It's a cold start to a cold afternoon
with those clouds spilling in, maybe even a flurry or two for today. Big warm up, though,
for at least a couple of days. Details after the break. With MX Platinum, U.S.
access to over 1,400 airport lounges worldwide. So your experience before takeoff is a taste of
what's to come. That's the powerful backing of Amex. Conditions apply. This is first alert weather from
ABC 11. I Witness News. Happy Sunday, everybody. It's going to be another cold day today. We don't
have the wind like yesterday. We had gusts over 40 miles an hour in many locations and not even close
to that today. Cold though, 30s. Fayetteville get around 40. Disexpects.
mostly cloudy skies as we go throughout the day.
Maybe a flurry or two, but the air is so dry.
But most of that's going to evaporate.
Just a novelty if you see a couple of flurries.
30s out there as we go throughout the afternoon.
If you're getting a little shopping done today,
getting down to 29 later in the evening hours,
it's going to be another cold night tonight as the skies are going to clear.
23 right now.
It's mostly cloudy.
The dew point still minus one.
So it's very dry air with a north breeze at about six miles an hour.
19 Oxford, 21 row and oak rappers.
Smithfield of Fayville also at 27 degrees.
If you're out later on tonight, you can find Jupiter's.
You look to the west, and to the left of that is a bright star serious.
Pretty easy to see in the night sky tonight.
But I have a feeling a lot of you're going to be watching the game tonight up in over at, rather, in San Francisco.
Seahawks and the Patriots, weather's going to be fantastic in the 70s, falling down to the 60s by the time we get later in the game.
Northeast is looking good for travel today, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Denver, all the major.
HUBS. Out west, we've got some more rain in northern California through Oregon.
So far, the major hubs, though, showing no delays.
Gotcha 70, coming up in a few minutes, Tamara.
Sounds great. Thank you, Steve. Well, right now, you can buy tickets for this year's
Art in Bloom. The popular event now less than six weeks away.
It's starting March 18th at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
More than 50 floral designers will participate in the four-day event.
Public tickets, they're limited, and they will sell out quickly.
And we're just less than a week away from Valentine's Day.
and love may not be in the air for everyone living in Raleigh.
According to a new survey from smartasset.com,
Raleigh ranks number one in North Carolina for singles.
At least 46% of the people living in the city have never been married.
Winston-Salem has the highest share of married residents in North Carolina with 45%.
Now airline fees break down.
Who's cheapest and who's not?
Plus, the White House ordered to release billions for a tunnel project.
And Trayvon Miles and Kate Roderson breaking.
down what happened after UNC's win over Duke last night. It's coming up.
We are...
When McDonald's partnered with Frank's Red Hot, they said they could put that
shit on everything. So that's exactly what McDonald's did.
They put it on your McChrispy. They put it in your hot Honey MacNucket's dip.
They even put it in the creamy garlic sauce on your McMuffin.
The McDonald's Frank's Red Hot menu. They put that shit on everything.
Breakfast available until 11 a.m.
at participating Canadian restaurants for a limited time.
Franks Redhot is a registered trademark of the French's food company LLC.
Local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
A federal judge has ordered the White House to unfreeze $16 billion of funding for a rail tunnel project between New York and New Jersey.
It comes just as construction was slated to shut down.
The project aims to connect the states with a rail tunnel underneath the Hudson River.
Now, it was reported last month that President Trump presented Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumman,
with an offer to unfreeze the funds. In exchange for the money, Schumer had to agree to rename
New York's Penn Station and Washington's Dulles International Airport after President Trump.
Trump later claiming that Democrat Chuck Schumer had the idea. However, Senator Schumer says
that was a quote, absolute lie. And if you plan on flying anytime soon, personal finance website
NerdWallet ran a little analysis to help you out with the fees. According to the new
study. Most airlines charge about the same for bags with JetBlue a bit higher. As for seat
selection charges, Delta is leading the pack as the cheapest. JetBlue comes out on bottom for the
most expensive. Now, of course, how you travel makes a huge difference. If you don't care where you
sit and are a light packer, you'll probably save some big on a budget ticket. Then let's talk
college basketball. That game last night, it's always a highlight of the year. Unc.
Chapel Hill beating Duke 71 to 68 in the first tobacco road showdown of the season.
Kate Roderson and Trayvon Miles on why this is one of college sports most storied rivalries.
Meeting number 266 between Duke and North Carolina.
Trey was an all-time classic, an all-time finish with Seth Trimble hitting a nearly
buzzer beating three-pointer to send this place into pandemonium.
They say this rivalry never disappoints.
We saw that here last night, a special, special moment by Trimble.
to hit that game winning shot for UNC and the crowd and everybody to come on to the court.
It's a special moment here at the Dean Daly.
I'm high of it, man. It's crazy. It's crazy. You dream of stuff like this as a kid.
You dream of stuff like this even as a grown man before you go to sleep, man.
Man, I never would have thought that that would have been me at the end of the game.
And it's just crazy to put myself into some history books like that.
On the other side, on the flip side, Duke losing this game, a devastating loss for John Shire and his crew.
Add insult to injury, Shire talked about the incident with UNC's court storming after the game.
I was most concerned just for the safety of our players after the game.
I don't want to make it about that because Carolina, they played a great game to win.
And that's a heartbreaking loss for our team.
You know, I got staff members that got punched in the face.
And that's not what this game is about.
Duke's loss here to North Carolina only their second of the season.
head coach John Shire pointed out that each of Duke's losses have been on the last play on one possession.
So he's confident his team will learn and grow from this.
Yeah, and after we talk to him and Kim Boozer, he said that these losses will help them going forward.
So all I got to say is they play Pitt next.
Panthers, watch out.
Guys, back to you.
Man, oh man, I love a good Tobacco Road showdown, especially when you and see wins.
I know you do.
Hey, I picked Duke to win.
And it looked like I knew what I was talking about.
right up until the end.
That was an incredible shot.
So yeah, congratulations on a big victory.
We'll see on March 6th.
Just saying, all right, so outside there you got the cloudy skies now.
Temperatures are cold.
We're in the 20s in most spots.
It's going to be a cold day today.
There could be a couple of flurries around too.
Just a novelty though.
Nothing to be worried about.
Low, even mid-60s on Tuesday.
That's the pick day of the week.
Maybe make some plans that's going to feel pretty good.
We're going to cool down by the end of the
week and could there be a wintry mix? It's a low-end chance right now. We're keeping an eye on it,
but there's going to be some cold air coming in. It'll bring our temperature down enough. And can we
get some moisture to override that to maybe give us some wintry weather? There's a couple of
models that are hinting at it. Our confidence is really low at this point in time. We'll have
some cold air marginally cold enough. Then on top of that, that moisture could come in from the
south and override it and over the top of it that give us that mix. But still tons of question
here. Models are not in agreement on temperature or timing for that matter. So let us fine tune that as we get a little bit closer. Well, now just broad brush a chance at some showers as we go into Friday and see how that does indeed change. 30s for you today. If you want to get the car wash, just a lot of clouds around that for you today. And notice the clouds are with us now. They stay with us all the way through at least the early evening hours. By six, seven o'clock, we start seeing those clouds push out. It'll be clear and another cold one for later on tonight. Cloudy at North Hills. It's
23 degrees with a north breeze at about six miles an hour. Feels like 16 degrees. 21 Roanoke Rapus, 23 in a Roxborough, 27 Sanford, and Fayetteville at 27 degrees. Very cold indeed. So Tuesday's the day. That's what we're going to get to those lower 60s. Plenty of sun. We'll catch some of these clouds drifting in late in the day. And then more clouds around Wednesday. Front settles in. Could get some light showers with it as well. It wouldn't be much. So it'd be very light indeed as we go throughout our Wednesday. Still 61.
and then some cooler weather is going to filter in from the north.
And that sets us up for that potential as we head into the end of the week.
Up in the mountains today, look at some of these summit bases.
Boy, those are healthy.
They've been making snow, plus Mother Nature's been helping out as well.
That's very impressive.
A good day for some skiing today.
Yesterday it was just too windy wind gusts up there at resort levels over 60 miles an hour.
So 30s for temperatures today, around 40 in Fayetteville, 41 into Lumberton as well.
And then for tonight, we clear out another cold night.
Most of us will be in the teens.
Few areas in the sand hills could be in the 20s.
Your first alert seven day forecast them.
Notice the numbers will be around 44 on our Monday, mostly sunny.
Pick of the weeks, Tuesday, we're looking fantastic.
Wednesday, maybe a spotty showers that front settles in from the north.
Still mild the temperature could fall in the afternoon.
Cooler on Thursday.
So big question marks heading into Valentine's Day weekend.
There's a risk of that wintery mix.
We might change that to a different day.
So we'll keep that in mind here in the next couple of days.
and fine-tune this for you, but definitely going to cool down heading into next weekend.
We'll be back right after this.
Investing is all about the future.
So what do you think's going to happen?
Bitcoin is sort of inevitable at this point.
I think it would come down to precious metals.
I hope we don't go cashless.
I would say land is a safe investment.
Technology companies.
Solar energy.
Robotic pollinators might be a thing.
A wrestler to face a robot, that will have to happen.
So whatever you think is going to happen in the future, you can invest in it at WealthSimple.

Welcome back. Well, it's Black History Month, and food is such an important part of the culture.
Joel Brown went to the chicken hut in Durham and sat down with the owner and longtime Durham resident
to talk about soul food, history, and culture surrounding this nearly 70-year-old institution.
I'm here, right?
Welcome to the chicken hut.
So we always have fried, chicken, fried fish, and proud shrimp.
It's Durham down to its bones and anchor when everything else was changing.
Well, I tell anyone I can never feel my mom's shoes or my dad's shoes.
I have to walk in my own, feel my own shoes.
Trey or Claiborne Tapp III grew up in his parents' restaurant inheriting this place and the tradition.
So he just developed a recipe and started broasting fried chicken, and it just took off from there.
Oh, there was a lot in the middle there.
Yeah, yeah, it was a lot in the middle.
Mini Forte, a lifelong Durhamite, has been a cheery.
chicken hut customer since she was a little girl since it was called the chicken box when
Claiborne founded it. What soul food do you? When you start to cook, it is your heart that you
put in this. Chicken Hut has been cooking up fried chicken in every soul food side in this community
since the 1950s. It's warmth and history packed in a styrofoam box eaten with a plastic fork.
Thomas Keller once said a recipe has no soul. You as the cook must bring the soul to the recipe.
Look, you know, we come from enslaved people who didn't get the greatest food in the kitchen.
We were given the scraps, and we had to make the best out of it.
It makes something delicious.
It makes something flavorful.
You stand in line, picking out your pleasure, fried chicken made to the order, fall off the bone ribs,
and a rotating collection of mouth-watering sides.
But the hope is you share that food.
The people you care about.
It's a piece of black history that Trey says isn't changing.
anytime soon. I love it. I was raised on it all my life, so this is all I know.
All right. Well, coming up from Chapel Hill to the Super Bowl stage, Seahawks, Patriots,
and North Carolina connections everywhere. Super Bowl snacks cost a bit more this year or two if you're
hosting a watch party, how much you're expected to spend. And as we head to break. Here's a live
look at downtown Durham. Looks beautiful out there, but it will be cold coming up.
We are in Local News. ABC 11.
eyewitness news continues next.
Right now.
Amazon presents

Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
And a live look at downtown Raleigh this morning.
It looks beautiful, but we've been talking about how cold it will be today.
Good morning, Carolina.
It's Sunday, February 8th.
I'm Tamara Scott.
You are watching eyewitness news on ABC 11,
and wherever you stream.
The details of the top stories
and all the day's news is just ahead.
But first let's check in with meteorologist,
Steve Stewart.
He's got your first alert forecast,
and it is looking very cold.
It is a cold day, yeah.
But, you know, it's not windy.
Yesterday to win, that was something.
But you do say that there is some hope.
Yeah, it got a little nice weather coming.
At least some warmer temperatures, that's for sure.
Good morning, everybody.
You see the clouds have moved in,
had plenty of sun early on,
but the clouds you're going to win out
as we go throughout your daytime hours.
By the evening, we're going to clear out again.
But only 36 for the high temperature, maybe a couple of flurries.
Don't be surprised if you see some.
Just a novelty, nothing to be concerned about.
A shower chance on Wednesday and question marks at the end of the week.
The European and the Canadian bowl of shot bringing a wintery mix to the area.
We'll talk more about that coming up in about 15 minutes or so.
But a good indoor day, just so cold outside today and mainly going to be cloudy.
We'll be in the 30s.
Of course, by the evening hours as we clear out and still cold, a lot of you going to be inside watching that Super Bowl.
There you see the clouds that are with us today.
As we get into the evening, we start seeing them thin a bit.
And then later on tonight, we're going to have the clear skies and another frigid night.
Most of us likely falling down to the teens for lows.
23 and cloudy out at North Hills right now with the north breeze at six miles an hour, quite a bit colder than this time yesterday.
Evening out, nothing to be concerned about clearing the skies and temperatures falling down to the 20s by 10 o'clock 27.
But we keep going down and the low tonight, likely getting down to 18 or 19 in the truck.
A couple of days, though, we're going to be in the 60s this week.
More on that coming up in just a few minutes, Tamara.
Thank you, Steve.
Well, Israeli Prime Minister Netanhanu will meet President Trump Wednesday in Washington to discuss U.S. talks with Iran.
Iran's foreign minister has threatened U.S. bases after indirect discussions in Oman.
Netanyahu says negotiations must limit Iran's missiles and in support for armed proxies.
Now, Trump called recent talks very good and plans more next week.
Concerns remain over possible regional conflict with military leaders also involved in diplomacy.
President Zelensky says the U.S. has given Ukraine and Russia a June deadline to reach a peace deal.
Russian strikes on energy infrastructure have forced nuclear plants to cut output, causing extended power outages.
U.S. broker talks in Abu Dhabi failed to produce a breakthrough.
President Trump is also turning to military leaders to help negotiate both Iran and Ukraine issues.
Spain and Portugal are bracing for storm Marta just days after deadly floods killed two and forced more than 11,000 to evacuate.
Portuguese authorities postponed today's presidential vote and warn of heavy rain, strong winds, and rogue seas.
In Spain, orange alerts remain across Andalysia and other regions as flooding and land sites threatened homes and farmland.
Now, an Ohio man has been indicted for threatening to kill Vice President J.D. Vance.
33-year-old Shannon Mather also faces charges for disturbing child sexual abuse materials.
He remains in custody with a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
And the countdown is on for Super Bowl 60, and it all comes to ahead tonight.
The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are facing off for the big game,
and we know a number of players with North Carolina connections are hitting the field.
Take a look. The Seahawks have seven players with ties to North Carolina,
including former UNC Duke and NC State athletes.
Meanwhile, the Patriots have six connections,
including former Tar Heel quarterback Drake May.
The Pats also have another Tar Heel
and two former Wolfpack players on the roster.
Super Bowl 60 is here.
All eyes on Levi Stadium and Santa Clara teams
and fans are getting ready for one of the world's biggest events.
It's sure to be a memorable one.
ABC's Jacqueline Lee is there with more.
Just a few hours away from kickoff,
historic franchises will be fighting for
glory and new head coaches are looking for their first Super Bowl ring. The teams hitting the
field, cramming in a few last minute practices before going head to head. 23-year-old Patriots
quarterback Drake May trying to become the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl.
I'm at the stage now. I'm, you know, NFL quarterback and trying to make a name for myself.
And Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold saying early career mistakes made him who he is today,
having played for five different teams in his eight league seasons. I think just being able to have a great attitude,
the time and kind of have that, you know, all right, you know, that happens. It's football. You know,
we're not always going to be perfect. And it's about how can you move on from mistakes to continue
to better the team and better yourself. In between plays, viewers are looking forward to a Super Bowl
pastime, iconic commercials. When does a storm hit? Expect rain in an hour. Jam packed with
celebrities and witty plot lines, essentially making mini movies. Can I get a copy? Oh, God. No one.
No one can see this.
And as for fans attending the game in person,
Go see y'all, bro. We're going to win.
The Bay Area has been inundated with concerts and events,
like this big game block party with thousands in front of San Jose City Hall.
And this fanatics Super Bowl party featuring singer Cardi B.
It is a non-stop party out here.
Now, as for security preparations, federal authorities are working with state and local partners
in order to keep them more than 75,000 attendees safe.
Jacqueline Lee, ABC News.
Santa Clara, California.
Well, hey, if you're hosting a Super Bowl party,
it's going to cost more to feed your hungry friends this year.
Wells Fargo estimates a food spread with typical game day foods for 10 people
will cost $140.
Now, it's only 1.6% more than last year.
It's a lot less than the overall costs of groceries,
which has gone up 2.4%.
By now, pay later.
It comes to renters across the U.S.
and celebrating Black History Month,
how George Williams built one of America's greatest,
track programs and the winter games. The highlights on the U.S. wins ahead. First, good morning,
Steve. Hey, good morning there. Look at the radar, a little flurry activity just out to our west right now.
A lot of that's evaporating, but don't be surprised if you see a flurry today. Otherwise, cloudy and

Welcome back everybody. Happy Sunday to you.
Another cold day today, but not
like we had yesterday, but we'll likely be in the 30s, maybe touching 40 in Fayetteville.
Again, you see his little snowflakes there. There could be a flurry that moves on by just any location, mainly just out to our west.
We'll keep an eye on it for you. Just a novelty, not a big deal. 30s as we go throughout the day today, a lot of clouds around those.
So it's kind of a good indoor day. Maybe you had not do a little shop it just though it's going to be definitely cold.
It's cold now. 23 degrees out of North Hills, dew point minus one. The air is incredibly dry. That's why that moisture coming in. A lot of the, you know,
flurry activity is likely going to evaporate. Twenty-three to Lewisburg, 23 also Roxburgh,
28 Sanford and Fayetteville at 27 degrees. Very cold indeed. If you're out later on tonight,
look west, you'll see Jupiter in the night sky, and left of that is the bright star serious.
So how does it look out in California? Pretty good for the big game tonight. 70s around
kickoff after the game getting down to the lower 60s. Weather's not going to be an issue out there.
Although we are going to get some rain in the Pacific Northwest. Big cities out east are looking good
for travel, Denver, near 70 for the high today. So far, all the major hubs are showing no delays.
Got your 7A8 coming up in a few minutes. Stammer. Sounds great. Thank you, Steve. Well, ABC 11 continues to
celebrate Black History Month, a dynamic story about a local legend. Trayvon Miles caught up with
track and field coach George Puff Williams for a special sit down. The story of American track and
field can't be told without George Williams. Most people didn't even know I was here at Olympic
coach. I was the black man. And, you know, there hadn't been but two kids.
head men, black coaches in the Olympics from the USA.
Before he was one of the all-time winning his coaches in NCAA history
or the head coach of the U.S. national team in Athens, Greece, in 2004,
Sir George grew up in a very segregated Miami, Florida.
When I grew up in Overtown, there's a lot of people over the town.
We had Esther Rose, we had Sugar A. Robinson.
We had Cindy Poteer.
You met so many stars and so many people were trying to make the next level.
After graduating high school in the early 60s, Williams' path to St. Augustine's University didn't get off to the best start.
It started out rough because I had to come up on a bus.
I only had a lunch bag and everything.
And when I got to South Carolina, I had to give up my seat for a white lady.
And I had to kind of stand all the way from, I think it was in Florence, South Carolina to Raleigh.
Williams graduated from the school in 1965 and went on to build one of the most prolific track
programs in the United States while playing almost every role imaginable at the Raleigh HBCU,
even taking on the role of basketball coach.
And this is me and Mike Soshecki, who was up there talking, and Mike said, y'all talking about me
and Roy Williams and everything.
The greatest coach on the stage is George Williams.
I said, Mike, you can't say that.
He said, hey, I'm just telling the truth.
Credible that a young black boy from a poor part of Miami could one day lead his country,
but George Williams lived it.
Now he's given his best to the next generation.
I've been to every content about Antarctica.
Now I've got a chance to drive and sit in the front seat,
but I haven't forgot about the people in the back seat.
And I keep trying to give back and help young folks.
I hope they'll achieve the same thing I've achieved much more.
I try to do my part.
Now it's time for you young folks to do your part.
And Coach Williams credited so many for helping his program here locally.
Roy Ector, Dr. Freddie Bennett, Bill Ruff.
and Harry Freeman are all names to make a story like his possible.
Well, the Quad God soars, gold for Team USA,
and what we know about Lindsey Vaughn's crash earlier this morning.
Plus January John's report delayed after the government shut down.
And RIT now paid later.
New services let you split your rent payments up.
Let's head to break and a live look at downtown Raleigh first.
Take a look there. Very cold morning ahead of you.
We are local news.
eyewitness news continues now.
Well, by now, pay later is extending to rent.
New services are now sprouting up that lets renters split up their payments over the course
of a month.
Customers say they appreciate the flexibility, but experts warn the fees involved can add up to
hundreds of dollars every year.
About 109 million Americans or about 42.5 million households are renters in the United
States.
And the jobs report for January is now delayed due to the brief government.
shutdown. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is also postponing the December report on job openings.
Economists had expected the January jobs report to show that employers added 80,000 jobs last
month. One non-government report disputes that number. This delay comes at a bad time. Growth is
strong, but the job market is sluggish. Economists are trying to figure out if hiring will catch
up to the growth or match weak hiring, or if advances in artificial intelligence means the economy
can roar ahead without creating many jobs.
Now turning to the Winter Olympics in Milan, Cortina,
Lindsay Vaughn's Olympic downhill crash ends in a crash.
The 41-year-old American skier went down early in the race in Italy,
screaming after injuring her left knee.
She was airlifted by helicopter and may be done with her storied career.
And the medal count is already climbing.
Switzerland striking first, taking gold in men's downhill.
Team USA is still waiting to get to.
the podium, but that's expected to change. American hockey star Hillary Knight, achieving a milestone.
And on the ice, American figure skater known as the Quad God. Will he stick the landing?
Well, here's ABC's Johnny Fernandez. Ilya Malinen, the only person to land a quadruble
axo in international competition with a near flawless routine in his first Olympic games. Prior to
the competition, the man nicknamed the Quad God spoke with ABC's Maggie Ruelly.
What is going through your mind when it is happening?
There's not much you can really think in like one second, you know?
It's like you're there, you're in the air, you know, you might see blurry for a little bit,
but then you land and it's over.
Madison Chalk and Evan Bates competing in the free dance portion of the same event,
helping the team secure first place.
The duel were part of the American team that won gold four years ago in Beijing.
U.S. women's ice hockey defeating Finland 5 to nothing improving to 2-0 in the tournament.

Team USA's Ali Martin barely missing out on the podium in his first winter Olympics.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Michaela Schifrin, who suffered a punctured wound to her abdomen last season, is reducing her schedule.
She'll compete in three events compared to six, four years ago, where she failed to medal.
My top pace is among the fastest in the world.
My baseline is good.
There's turns where I still back off that I see the top, top women who have been consistently winning races.
And Schiffin is set to race in the team combined Tuesday, followed by the giant slalom Friday the 15th and the solemn days later.
Johnny Fernandez, ABC News, New York.
Well, here's a live look at downtown Fayetteville this morning.
Looks pretty clear, but it's cold all across the triangle.
We know that it's extending there, too, I'm sure.
Oh, sure.
Yeah, everyone's below freezing.
It's going to be just a cold, cloudy day today.
A couple flurries are possible, too.
Just a novelty.
Don't panic.
We're fine.
Outside right now, you see in the clouds, it's going to look like this pretty much for the rest of the days.
Those clouds move on in here.
And again, we can't rule out a couple isolated flurries.
The air is really dry.
it will evaporate and just a novelty for sure.
Low, even mid-60s on Tuesday.
That's the pick day of the week.
Plenty of sunshine, a good day to get out.
As we get into Wednesday, more clouds in a spotty shower.
And could winter come back by the end of the week?
Well, there are some signs, but it's not a lock by any stretch.
But we'll have some colder air filtering in from the north and maybe some moisture overriding
it like the European model and also the Canadian model has been really bullish on this as well.
So we're going to call for that chance at a winter remix, but we're just covering our basis.
confidence is really low at this point in time. Cold air should be here just marginally cold enough for a mix.
Moisture overrides that cold air from the Gulf could just end up being a basically a cold rain, but till tons of questions here.
Models not in agreement on the timing nor the type of moisture either. So our type of precipitation.
So we're going to watch this closely over the coming days and then make some adjustments if necessary.
There you see the clouds out there right now and it's going to be cloudy as we go throughout the day today.
A little flurry activity.
Had one report of some flurries out around the triad.
That might try to hold together to give us a flurry or two.
But keep in mind, too, folks, the air is so dry.
It wouldn't be much.
There's that risk of a shower midweek.
And then there's a chance at showers as we get into Friday.
Still not in the likely category.
A lot of questions still remain there.
We'll get to those 30s all the way through the afternoon.
So a few hours above freezing.
I want to get the car wash today.
If you got all that salt and junk on the car, good day to get it clean.
There you see the cloud cover.
we'll have as we go throughout the day today. By the time we get to the evening hours,
those clouds are pushing to the south and then we're going to clear out. And once again,
it is going to be a cold night tonight. Outside right now, 23 degrees and mostly cloudy.
Feels like 16 with just a light breeze out of the north at six miles an hour.
21 Roanoke Rapids, 24 Rocky Mount Wilson at Irwin's at 28 degrees. I think Tuesday's the best day
of the week. Temperatures are going to be nice. Just some clouds late in the day and that's about it.
Front's going to settle in.
Could squeeze out a little light shower as we go into our Wednesday.
Wouldn't be much.
Just a few hundreds of an inch to maybe a tenth of an inch.
And that moves away and then the colder air filters in from the north.
Good skiing day today.
Yesterday was just incredibly too windy.
But today looks good.
Look at some of these bases up at the summits.
That's pretty impressive.
Temperatures there are going to be in the 30s and most areas,
getting a little bit of light snow from Mother Nature as well.
Numbers in the 30s for highs.
Couple areas touching 40.
Clouds are with us today, tonight clearing out and cold again.
We're in the teens in most spots and some low 20s down in the sand hills.
First alert seven-day forecast then tomorrow about 44.
Tuesday, big warm up for us.
Wednesday we'll see a spotty light shower around as that front settles in from the north,
partly sunny on our Thursday, and then big question marks on the timing and the temperature for Friday and Saturday.
For now we'll go with a chance at a wintery mix.
But Valentine's Day, regardless of precipitation, going to be cloudy and it's going to be cold.
Tamara.
All right, thank you, Steve.
Well, now's a good time to download the ABC 11 mobile app.

Well, new swim line celebrates diverse, ever-changing bodies, the latest in NC Made.
Next.
Welcome back.
Well, eyewitness news highlighting more people and products that are North Carolina made.
This week, we've got warm weather and spring break on our minds.
One Raleigh woman is working to help women like her mom,
find swimsuits that make them feel confident and comfortable.
After graduating from NC State, Sarah Blazer moved to New York to pursue her career in the fashion
industry. During the pandemic, she moved in with her mom and noticed her struggling to find
a swimsuit. She was going through menopause, all the body changes, and she was extremely
uncomfortable. And my mom is the type of woman who will drop any amount of money on a swimsuit
if it's comfortable and gives her the right support. And she was just completely not happy.
and it became very clear that swimwear does not often accommodate the beautifully diverse and ever-changing bodies of women.
So Sarah sewed a suit for her mom and Saratone Swim was born. The full story on our website, ABC11.com.
