Now.
Yeah, guys, the precipitation has picked up here in the last few minutes, seeing more of that
sleet. You can probably hear it bouncing off my jacket right now. And this sort of goes to
show you why we want more of this, as Quaylon and the rest of our weather team has told you,
as you see, maintenance worker from this building up the block here is actually shoveling
some of that sleet out of the way now. And you can sort of see the progress that's been made
on the sidewalk, which obviously you cannot do with freezing rain, which unfortunately we are
expecting more of still throughout the day. But at this point, if you're starting your day
in areas that have been cleared or salted, you actually might be able to walk around better
than at least if there was that sort of glaze of freezing rain over the area.
So we have seen a decent amount of sleepfall.
If you looked at your window this morning in a place like downtown Raleigh, as you see here,
you might mistake it for snow.
You might think, oh, like it snowed overnight.
So here in downtown, it's kind of patchy the last hour or two.
We've sort of seen the precipitation come and go.
It seems to have picked up here in the last five or ten minutes or so, but good to see.
both the NCDOT cruise on Capitol Boulevard and some of the main streets here in downtown Raleigh,
as well as now as people have started their day, some people salting and clearing the sidewalks
to the people that can start their day are able to do that safely.
It's been pretty empty, though, out here.
I mean, this is the middle of the biggest city in our area, and besides a handful of dog walkers guys
and the bold of heart, it's been people have been heating the warning, which is a good side.
Not a bad day to stay inside of me cozy, I guess.
Well, if they turn on their TV and they see you out there, freezing, you know, what?
I'm wearing his wife's hat.
I stayed in the house as well.
Sean, thank you.
All right, as we had to break, let's take a live look right now in Apex.
You can see those trees.
It's hard to tell if there's a coating.
It looks like there might be a little coating on those trees.
We're going to get a check in with Cindy Bay in Apex right after the break.
909 and good news.
Cindy Bay's winter weather alarm has gone off.
Yes, it woke her right up and she's in Apex all bonds.
it up now. Cindy, what are you seeing?
Hey, well, good morning, Anna and Joel.
It is a good morning here in the peak of good living.
It's actually nice and quiet, peaceful.
I got my coffee, but if you wanted to get coffee downtown, no coffee.
So make it at home.
But here's a look at the downtown scene right now.
You see a couple of people walking there, dogs, just a nice, quiet morning right now.
A beautiful site when we see none of the roads have been touched right now in this area.
We have seen a couple trucks working through
on our way to Apex, just salting the roads.
But for right now, we're just enjoying just this peaceful,
quiet view right now in downtown Apex.
All right, so no major problems there in your part of Way County.
I'm sorry?
No major problems.
No major problem.
Cindy, I'm waiting for the coffee to kick in still, Cindy.
It's like a game of down the line.
Sorry, give me just a second.
Cindy, thank you.
We'll check in in a little bit.
But now let's head to break.
But first, do we have a live look at something?
There's a DOT camera.
This is US One and Apex.
You can see there are, there's one lonely car going down the road and they have a plow truck.
There's two.
Yeah, and it's a plow truck.
You can see roads still covered.
So keep that in mind if you do have to head out today.
We'll be right back after the break.
914 at the time.
Team here, assembled the four of us here.
you through this winter weather.
You said assemble.
Assemble, yeah, our Avengers pose.
What would yours be?
I don't know what that was.
I think I was picking something up.
It was.
All right. There's Steve Thor Stewart.
Meantime.
The impact scale.
The impact scale was it four all week.
You guys moved it down to three.
Yeah.
Had to.
Yeah.
It's going that direction.
If we had, you know,
freezing, anticipated at three in the morning
with freezing rain,
it's been sleet for the most part,
most part, which which is still not great.
The roads are bad, but it's not accumulating on the trees and the power lines that helps us.
Because if you don't lose power, yeah, you can still hang out at home.
Yeah, just watch some TV.
Yeah.
Sleep doesn't feel good on your face, but it's much better than freezing rain.
It's mother nature is microneedling.
Exactly.
Just as Bianca said, my courtesy.
You gotta take that free micraternitling when you can.
How wonderful is Mother Nature?
Yeah.
Yeah, so we did lower the impact scale to a three of five.
I want to be clear though, this is still an impactful event.
The roads are still dangerous out.
out there. So please, no travel today unless you absolutely have to. In terms of the power outages, we still have the risk, but it's going to be, I think, more for areas to the north. And we're starting to see that reduction in general. And that's because, as Steve mentioned, we're seeing more sleet at this time and less freezing rain. But we're still going to see a potential for freezing rain at times this morning and afternoon. The models are trending warmer, though, towards the end of this event, as we've been mentioning. So we could end up with a little bit more rainfall towards the evening hours. There's a slight wind pick up.
up later today though with the front on the way so actually a little bit more instability coming.
So you'll notice some gusty winds later but that's also going to bring in that much colder air into early next week too.
So here's first of our Doppler net and you can see that already we have breaks in the precept for a lot of locations south into Moore County.
We have some freezing rain and sleet and spots but we have more sleet and snow showers around the triangle stretching from Raleigh all the way north into Durham, Chatham County too.
Those of you east along 95, a little mix here, freezing rain around Johnston County,
but into Nash County, Edgecombe and also Wilson, more of a snow shower set up with some sleep in a few spots.
And then north into Roanoke Rapids, Halifax, Northampton County.
You're seeing a bit more snow shower, too.
More accumulating snow on the roads.
Talk to some of our teammates here.
Nicole, our director, her son, planned to do a little sledding this morning.
So that'll be fun.
We have some dry air working in.
Good morning, Robert, by the way.
We have some dry air working in this morning and also still the low to the south.
Cold front to the west.
That front works in later.
There's actually a chance for some thunderstorms around the Gulf South.
That's where they could see maybe a little thunderstorm action later today.
But we have the storm reports that continue to come in.
And a lot of this is freezing rain and sleep mix.
So that's the majority of the area.
Those to the north will probably have more snow reports coming in later from the overnight snow accumulation.
That being said, the winter weather advisory still in effect for areas in Wayne County.
Samson, Cumberland. In general, though, you'll have less impacts with this event and the winter storm warning for the rest of the viewing area.
A little bit more traffic out here on the roads, but in general, light volume on the roads because of the current conditions.
I-40 at Airport Boulevard, a little slick in some spots.
Temperature change from yesterday shows that cool down, and we're down into the teens and 20, so easily below the freezing mark.
But it feels colder because we have a brisk wind out there, too, and that continues through the day.
So a little break, as I mentioned, in early afternoon with the light refreezing rain picking up again this evening and freezing rain tonight.
We'll see a little warm up into tomorrow morning, so some spots may climb above the freezing mark early tomorrow, but it's those gusty winds that could pick up later.
So that's where the power outage threat will linger, I think, towards the evening hours.
With more on your extended forecast, including that much colder air, we're going over to Steve.
Okay, thank you very much, Quailan.
You're right about the impacts as far as driving with the sleet.
It makes that very difficult, but as far as power outage is better.
But look down at North Hills right now.
We got the sleet down.
You can see the sleep pellets falling once again.
And right there on the ground, that is pretty much a level,
about maybe a quarter to three quarters of an inch of sleet.
And we've seen some reports around an inch of sleet that has been accumulating.
So more sleet, the better for power.
Because once we get the freezing rain, it starts accumulating on the trees and the branches
and those power lines start to get coated.
And we don't want to see that.
But we do know that eventually we are going to turn over to freezing rain.
But the longer we wait, the better overall.
So melting tomorrow.
We'll have sunshine.
We'll have temperatures climbing all the way up to the upper 30s.
But whatever doesn't dry is going to refreeze overnight.
We get really cold tomorrow night and into early Tuesday morning.
Could be in the single digits for feels like temperatures getting close to zero.
That means we'll likely see a cold weather advisory that will be issued by the National Weather Service.
The latest run of our high resolution in-house model shows even less accumulating ice,
which is all good news for us.
That means the power chances of going out are reduced.
They're still there up the 85 corridor,
but again, we've lowered those significantly from earlier this morning.
So if you get a glazed to a quarter inch of ice,
we'll still have power lines coated.
Branches are going to bend, few will break.
Some power outage is still possible,
and slick roads mainly on top of that sleet is going to make it even worse.
So just be cautious about that.
Look how predictor consistently been showing this,
And so is a high resolution rapid refresh model, a dry slot moving in.
And we could have a good three hour window where we have limited precipitation midday into the afternoon hour.
Still below freezing though.
As that front gets closer to us, the main band pushes in.
We could have a period of some moderate, even some heavier sleet starting to move in around dinner time.
Our model insistent on mixing with some rain as the temperatures try to warm up.
That could be wishful thinking. The high resolution rapid refresh model,
as another high resolution one does not show that solution. So just keep that in mind.
We'll be now casting, if you will, as we go throughout the date.
Got the old Bronco tie on, got to give you the forecast for the AFC championship game,
getting down to the teens in the fourth quarter, a little bit of snow.
And the NFC championship game up in Seattle with the Seahawks and the Rams,
weather not an issue, getting to the upper 30s under mostly clear skies in the fourth quarter.
All right, so today, a range in 20s and 30s, these upper 30s to near 40.
That's likely after we get to sunset.
That warm air is going to try moving in as that heavier band moves in.
And then behind it, we're going to be cold again tonight.
We'll have evening freezing rain.
It'll be ending later on.
And then tomorrow, after some morning clouds, I anticipate some sunshine around.
We'll get to 38, but there will be a biting breeze.
And we'll still have ice on the roads.
We'll get some melting and then a refreeze overnight because we're going to get down to 13 degrees.
Some areas can be even colder than that.
Fridid start on Tuesday, about 37 degrees.
And then keep in mind, we do expect to see the freezing temperatures are close to it as we finish the work week.
Staying in the 30s and low temperatures will be in the teens.
Okay, Steve, getting ready for that cold weather to continue.
Okay, so we do want to give everyone an update that we just heard from the governor's office.
He will be doing a briefing and update on the winter weather coming up at 1130 that will be virtual and we will carry that live here on ABC 11.
Yeah, you can watch it right here.
1130, governor speaking. As we go to break, let's take a live look in Washington, D.C.
There is the White House emphasis on the word white. Yeah, lots of snow coming down.
They're expecting six to 10 inches in the nation's capital. And you can take it from me.
Look, I've spent a lot of time living in D.C. They deal with snow about as good as we deal with snow.
Yeah. You know, it's when I say that, I mean, they may be shut down for a little bit.
It's not good. It's not a good situation. So we're watching that as this winter storm moves through our area and up and down the Atlantic.

All right.
Bianca Holman has been checking in from her,
station with Storm Chaser in Durham County in Durham all morning long for us.
Yeah, how's the micro-needling going so far?
Oh, you know what?
My esthetician is going to love my skin after this day, right?
We got to stay warm and nice and moisturized and bundled up.
But yeah, we're here in the Bull City.
We are along Fayetteville Street and the Durham Freeway.
And just to show you how blanketed the freeway is and empty it is for the most part,
but you can see how on both sides in both directions, how,
vehicles have kind of carved one lane out, but even down, if you can see, you can kind of zoom in and see underneath of all this,
it's still icy. It's still very icy, even in this groove that people have carved in one lane they've been driving in this area.
But also I want to show you, this also gives a good vantage point of the trees.
And we've been talking about how, as the rain comes in a little bit later on this afternoon, that it'll ice over, it'll weigh down those tree limbs.
And these tree limbs are as be what falls into the streets. It'll be what falls onto your house and your apartments.
and also those power lines.
And the power lines are right nearby.
I mean, you see the power lines here with the stoplights and such.
And so we just see just how bad this can turn really quickly in a matter of moments.
And so underneath this, it looks very powdery, but as you swipe away the sleet,
and you can barely wipe it away now.
We used to be able to quickly get down to the concrete here,
but it's beginning to really stack up now that it's been sleeting for quite some time here.
and we've continued to watch cars float in and out of here.
Not pretty not too bad.
Again, for the most part, people are staying off the roads,
but we actually saw one person go through a light and almost hit another vehicle.
So if you do have to venture out,
be sure to still pay attention to the streetlights because there are other cars that are out here.
But it can turn very dicey in any in a moment.
And of course, we'll continue to monitor things here in Durham.
Back to you guys.
Yeah, we heard that from the experts in the days up to this.
Look, if you have to be driving out that,
If you absolutely have to be driving in this, you need to be paying attention.
100% attention to your driving.
Everything down.
No distractions.
Bianca, thank you.
Right now, a group of Buddhist monks are continuing their walk for peace through North Carolina
as they make their way up to Washington, D.C.
And despite the weather, they received a warm welcome as they arrived yesterday in Raleigh.
Thousands came out to the state capital to witness this rare opportunity.
And it was an emotional experience for a lot of folks.
On the Walk for Peace Facebook page, the monks said they will continue their journey today.
They're going from Raleigh to Rollsville.
The monks say their 2,300 mile track is meant to promote unity and kindness.
You can see folks passing out flowers there, many people in tears.
And did you see the monkey had aloka, the dog?
Yes, yes.
Glad to see he's back on the road with them.
Yeah, very emotional.
So a lot of people, I'm sure, excited to see them again.
All right, let's go to break with a live look at Fayetteville Street in downtown.
Raleigh. You can see lots of cars still covered and that road still covered. So stay home if you
can. It's best to do that. We'll be right back after the break. The alerts continue for us.
Winter storm warning for the entire area. Re-freeze as we go overnight. Everything's playing out
exactly how you guys thought it was so far. As we try to clear this all, it's still very much
frozen underneath. Bottom of the hours, 930 conditions, treacherous outside. We say good morning
Again, Carolina, I'm Joel Brown. And I'm Anna Rivera, a winter storm morning in effect, and we are staying with you to bring you up to the date.
930 and this storm is going to be with us for a while. I mean all day long. Here's a live look at the NC State Bell Tower in Raleigh.
This is an all hands-on-deck operation all weekend long for us. I witness news will have round the clock coverage during this weekend storm. From here in the studio to out in the field, we have got you covered.
But first, let's run down your winter storm headlines this morning. A winter storm warning in effect right now. That's going to go until Monday at one.
The White House has approved North Carolina's emergency declaration that authorizes FEMA to begin responding to emergencies here.
We know more than 400 National Guard troops are on the ready right now.
And over at RDU, more than 80% of all flights are grounded today.
So make sure you check with your airline if you're planning to fly out today or pick someone up.
This morning, Governor Stein will provide another update on the winter storm.
We'll bring it that live here when it happens on ABC 11 at 1130.
Let's check in with meteorologist Quaylin Murphy.
She's been first alerting as to what to expect over the next 24 hours.
Good morning, Quaylor.
Hey, good morning.
Just getting started.
Of course, we do have a mixture of sleet and also some freezing rain with some snow showers in the mix as well.
But you can see on radar here, not full coverage because we have some drier air working in from the south.
But I don't want you to be thinking that we're done with the event.
We're just getting started.
We have made some minor changes to the impact scale here.
We did have some spots in major impacts.
But now most of us are sitting in that moderate impact for the region.
A little bit lower for those of you in Cumberland County, Southern Johnston County, now Samson County, Wayne,
even portions of Wilson and areas into parts of eastern Edgecombe County, Southern Harnett, those of you, mainly south and east of Lillington.
So our impact scale leading up to this event was generally a level four, but we've now come down to that moderate range.
That being said, we still have dangerous travel conditions out there, and we still have the potential for power outages as we see more freezing rain,
later today. We had some snowfall and ice already with accumulation, but the snowfall potential is over with at this point. We're still looking at more ice potential at this point. And some areas could pick up around the quarter of an inch more or maybe up to three tenths of an inch. So with the dangerous road conditions out there, the power outage potential, we still have the winter storm warning and effect through tomorrow afternoon. Winter weather advisory south and east of the triangle. What we've been seeing so far this morning is more sleet and less freezing rain. Initially, we thought we could get the freezing rain.
underway closer to three four o'clock that has not panned out which is not a bad thing so that would reduce the impacts and that's why again our scale has come down a bit in terms of that level the models are also trending a little bit warmer still towards the end of this event so we could finish up with some light rain showers all liquid rain by the time the event wraps up still concerns though for some freezing rain in a few locations a slight wind picks up as well with that last batch of rainfall working through that's the cold front and that's going to bring some elevated wind gusts it
It wouldn't take much to knock out some power for more locations.
So dryer air is working in now, but there's still plenty of moisture out to the west.
But what we're going to be following is that low pressure still to the south.
And that'll be lifting to the north.
Impact still all the way back towards Oklahoma, St. Louis, the Great Lakes, and northeast.
So wide expanse on this system.
We will see some more breaks coming our way.
I think we have a good two to three hours where we'll see limited to no precept.
And that'll be around noon today, 1 o'clock.
So accumulation will have come to.
to an end for a short time, at least on pause.
And then towards three, four o'clock,
we start rolling back in the freezing rain concerns.
And then sort of six, seven p.m.
This is where we transition over to some rainfall,
but there still could be a good three to four hours
with freezing rain before we transition over to rain.
And that's where the power outage threat
will go up a bit more.
Teens and 20s out the door, of course,
that supports freezing rain at the surface.
Feels like temperatures in the single digits
for many of you.
So 1 o'clock marks the pause on the break,
the accumulation 25 degrees, but light freezing rain picking back up late afternoon, 30 degrees,
still below freezing towards seven, but then a gradual bump in temperatures.
And you can see we actually climb above freezing early tomorrow morning just before sunrise,
32 degrees at 7 a.m. We're going to have some gusty winds at times, of course, that makes it
feel colder, but the winds towards the evening will come with that cold front. And that's
where I can have concerns that we could see a few more power outages with the freezing
rain developing. Next up is the colder air that moves in. Dangerous level.
especially Monday night into Tuesday with much colder Arctic air
at vecting in. So Tuesday morning down to zero on the feel that's for the
triangle those of you north of the triangle will have feels below zero and we do
not warm up much into the west of next week by Friday and Saturday temperatures
in the morning will feel like the single digits for spots. There's another
shot at some flurries later this week. Meteorologist Steve Stewart will have more on
that coming up just a few minutes Anna back to you. All right Quaylin let's take a
live look outside this is the DOT
camera at 440 and Capitol Boulevard. We do have that car up against the guardrail. It looks like
it's spun out because it's going in the wrong direction. I also saw that driver get out and put his
bumper into his car because his bumper had fallen off after hitting that guardrail. You see that
we do have the crew there with the move over sign trying to help him out. I've also seen some other
cars as they were driving start to slip and slide a little bit in that area. It looks like they're
trying to push it out right now. This is why we keep saying that it is still dangerous on the roads. You may
look outside and think it doesn't look that bad out there but this is what can happen.
So please if you do have to be out and about take your time when you are driving because this can happen
quickly and it can be devastating very quickly.
Looks like they're on the move now.
Yeah they are.
Be careful out there folks.
Just stay off the roads.
All right up until now our best view from Kerry has been from the Carrie Arts Building
camera and you can see Academy Street covered in sleet and snow.
But now we have got a live reporter on the ground.
who it is the troubleshooters showing up for duty. Diane Wilson live in Carrie. Diane, good
morning. Good morning, Joe and Anna. Yes, we're at Carrie right at 55 and O'Kelly Chapel Road.
And if you didn't have to venture out, as my mom texted me this morning, it's a beautiful winter
wonderland because it does look like a dusting of snow, but really if you go underneath that
snow, you can see here on the sidewalk, a complete sheet of ice. I'm going to venture on to 55
because people are taking your advice and not really coming out here. We've seen a few
snow plows. A few cars have been going in and out on 55s, but they've been treated pretty well.
A couple of snow plows have come out, come down here to get the snow off of 55 here.
And the traffic that we have seen, they have all been heating the warnings going very slow.
If you can take a look up there, that is 540 up there.
We have seen several pliles going up and down 540 there.
They're doing like a tag team thing.
you can tell because they're coming right after another.
So we've seen a couple of them going in the last 10 minutes
up and down, that is 540 there.
If you're heading out towards Holly Springs one direction,
the other direction would be going into Briar Creek.
But you can see one car there as they're traveling to us.
We've not seen really any problems.
We even saw a Tesla out here.
But again, they all are heating the warnings
and going pretty slowly as they are going out and about
if they have to get to work.
There are some of us who have to work like this.
So back to you guys.
Diane, forgive me. I might have been distracted for just a second.
But when I looked at 55 behind you, it looked very good.
I mean, as far as the streets that we've been seeing up and down the viewing area,
I was seeing a lot of pavement.
Have you been seeing plow trucks?
Are you been seeing the roads been treated since the precipitation started falling?
Correct. And I mean, I went out there, and there's no one coming right now.
And my photographer did warn me, this has been a heavily treated area.
55. I mean, you're going to Durham this way, this way.
I do not see any ice. It's basically slush, but again, they have treated these roads very well, pre-treated the roads.
We've seen several snow plows coming. This is why it's clear because you can see this was treated with the snowplow.
This area has not yet been treated by a snowplow. So they're at least getting one lane. So the traffic that does need to be out here.
When I say traffic, I say like a few cars every 15 minutes. There's not many people out here.
But yeah, I was impressed when I saw 55. I'm like, huh, it looks pretty good.
But don't look can be deceiving.
Looks can be deceived.
Yeah, they are treating this very well here.
Yeah. And you just heard Quaylin as she's watching this say that's what's going to turn into a mess.
Yeah.
As those temperatures start to dip.
It's going to be a whole lot of freezing and refreezing.
All right, Daniel, you're making me anxious this close to 55.
Get back on the sidewalk and then we will check back in with you later.
Okay, we are going to head to break.
But first, let's take a live look at the Sheraton Imperial camera at I-40.
You can see those trees almost look like they have a little bit of a glaze on.
them right now. You see just a couple of cars out there. Road still covered. And as we just showed you
with that last DOT camera, things can get really dicing, really quickly. So stay home if you can.
We'll be right back after the break. All right. So 942. And then you gave us that update about
women's basketball today over at UNC. They said, look, they're going to take on Syracuse today.
The game's going to happen, but they're telling fans to stay home. To stay home and watch it from home.
We're still going to play the game, but stay home and watch it from home. And you know why they're probably
still going to play it. Because they're staying at a hotel in downtown
Durham and that is where we find Trayvon Miles right now. And Trayvon, did you get to talk to them?
I know I chatted with them a little bit. Hey, Anna, Joel. Yeah, none of them wanted to talk on
camera of the Syracuse women's basketball team and their officials and their team support
all here in a room here off of East Chapel and Foster Street in downtown Durham. Did not get to
talk to them on camera, but I'll share with you what we just talked about off camera. First of all,
I want you to look at this road here because the team is getting ready to take off in a few minutes.
This road here on Foster Street, completely covered by snow, looks like to be pretty thick to me, just completely covered here.
Looks like it's still coming down more, obviously.
And behind me right now is the Syracuse Women's Team's bus.
They're getting ready to take the trip to Chapel Hill.
I talked to the bus driver.
I talk to their team support.
Talk to a bunch of different people.
And they are ready to play this game.
The Syracuse officials tell me that this is nothing to them, right?
They always play in this type of weather.
They're just interested to see how they will fare here getting to Chapel Hill from here in Durham.
They know that North Carolina is not experienced this type of weather a lot, and that's what they're worried about.
Their bus driver is actually from South Carolina.
So that's another interesting tidbit.
So that game is supposed to tip off at noon.
As you can see, these ladies are just getting ready to get on the bus here, and we'll have update later on.
Yeah.
Well, I'm sitting here next to a Syracuse University alum.
alum how are you feeling about it in the elevator with some of the players last night and
they were kind of laughing at us i have to be honest but i get it i get it i get it but yeah hopefully
they make it there safely and they get to play a good game uh trayvon one more question are you wearing
jordan's right of course uh i am um my car is a little distance away and as you can see the street
is pretty bad yeah so i'm stuck with what i came in here last night i don't have my boots right now
Maybe I'll make it down the street by the time the next hit to get some actual winter gear on, right?
But I look good, right?
No, they look great, man.
I just didn't know what kind of traction you were getting in those things.
I didn't think of Jordan's for snow coverage.
Whatever works.
Miles, thank you, sir.
Okay, as we had to break, let's take a live look at the radar right now.
Still a massive storm that we are dealing with.
We are not out of the woods just yet.
We've got our meteorologists ready to give you the latest update.
We'll be right back after the break.
947 on this Sunday morning.
Welcome back on this first alert day.
This will be the view for a lot of you heading into Monday and Tuesday.
We're going to see some icy conditions developing.
We have some good news for you as we bottom line this event.
The power outage risk is lowering.
It's not zero by any means, but it is coming down a bit more.
And that's because we continue to see more sleet than freezing rain.
There will be widespread icy road conditions developing and travel is already dangerous out there.
So please, if you can stay off of the roads.
Some melting will happen tomorrow.
We'll have the sunshine.
We'll have temperatures just about freezing, but it doesn't take much.
The problem is we refreeze Monday night and Tuesday with some of the coldest air of this event starting to work in.
Feels like temperatures will be near zero Tuesday for the triangle and certainly much lower than that for those of you to the north of the triangle.
Here's first alert, Doppler net, and we're seeing a scattering of some of that precip in the form of some freezing rainfall, mainly east of the triangle.
So Nash County, Edgecombe into Wilson, even parts of Wayne.
County seeing some of that potential and some of that also pushing north now into halifax
county in northampton we're seeing a bit more of a break though for cumberland sampson
county a little bit of a mix here out to the west for chathelman moore and some light sleet
happening around the triangle i 85 you're starting to see a little bit more sleep working in as
opposed to snow mecklenburg county still holding on to some very light snow showers we still have the
low pressure to our south but dry air is working in right now and that's why we're seeing a cutoff
and some of the precept happening at this point.
But you see what's out west here.
That's the cold front that's going to track through later today.
It's not only going to bring us more precept,
but also some gustier winds.
Storm reports continue to also populate our map right now,
but the more that you send to the weather service,
the more the reports will show up here.
So please continue to send those.
It really helps with our forecasting
because it verifies what we're seeing right now
with the ground truth that you verify outside of your window.
Winter weather alerts continue.
We have the still winter storm warning
for the entire area, the advisory because you're looking at conditions that won't be as bad around
Cumberland County, Samson and Goldsboro, just a little bit warmer. Here's a live look from I-40 at
Airport Boulevard and some traffic overpasses like this will be very much dangerous into tonight and
tomorrow. So that vehicle was still going a little bit too quickly, moving too fast for my taste.
I think late tonight and especially into the nighttime hours each night this week. You'll have to
watch out for bridges and overpasses. Remember, they freeze more quickly. Temperatures right now,
We have feels in the single digits as well.
The little breeze coming in from the west.
Again, some of those winds will pick up later tonight
because we had the cold front coming through.
That's where we could have one last push
of some power outages developing
if we see more ice accrual.
With more details on the extended forecast,
including more of the changes.
Here, Steve.
Okay, thank you very much, Quaylin.
Do you wonder why people think that you're smiling
during a certain point of your show?
Why that is?
It's because of you.
That's because of you.
What are you gonna do?
All right, listen, starting to see a little bit
ice here in our lens and downtown.
Everything is covered with that thin layer of sleet.
And again, more sleet is a good thing for us,
but it doesn't do good for the road.
It is slick out there.
If you can, just stay home.
Hopefully you have everything you need.
And as long as you have power, sit back,
make some food, watch some shows and enjoy yourself.
It's gonna be a little while you need to stay inside.
The sleet is better for us because freezing rain
is gonna attach to the branches and the power lines.
We don't wanna see those coated power lines
because that's when we lose that power.
And as Quaylin just mentioned, that chance, although still there, is lower than it was earlier because we anticipated freezing rain hours ago and it's still sleep for the most part.
So that's not a bad thing. We'll take it for sure. So melting tomorrow, we get some sunshine. We're going to be in the upper 30s, but it's not going to dry up completely. Whatever doesn't dry is going to re-free. So we'll have slick spots again early tomorrow morning and maybe for a few days in some places. Very cold Tuesday morning. Feels like temperature is single.
digits getting close to zero, so likely going to have a cold weather advisory.
Our in-house model, even less amounts of accumulated freezing rain now, probably a quarter inch in some spots that we'd like to see this.
There's going to be a burst that comes in later on, though. This is going to be the back edge of the storm, and if it's all freezing rain, these numbers might be a little bit higher.
So we're not in the clear by any means, but lower chances of losing power. Still a decent probability. Some areas will lose power, but it's a lot lower than it was early this morning.
And if you only get a glazed to up to a quarter inch, usually can handle that.
Now, trees and power lines can get coated.
Branches will bend, few of them will break, and we can get some power outages, and the roads are going to be slick, especially with freezing rain on top of sleet.
But if you get more than that, it's a significant change.
What we're noticing is drier air starting to punch in.
So this is a model, this is our in-house model, but other high-resolution models showing the same type of thing.
We could have a few hours without precipitation.
That's not a bad thing.
And then as we get later on,
we'll see the back edge of the storm coming our way,
light freezing rain around dinnertime.
And where it gets heavier,
I know this doesn't sound right.
It's counterintuitive,
but the heavier it is,
not as bad for the trees and the power lines
because the rain drop comes down,
hits and splashes off.
But if it's really light like a mist
or just a light rain,
all that's going to adhere
and start to add the weight.
So again, either one,
not necessarily a good thing.
Our in-house model has been
insistent that we're going to see some rain starting to move in and finish some rain. Other high resolution models, not that optimistic. So we do anticipate the freezing rain to be with us later up. Got to get this in the Bronco game forecast. Temperatures will fall down to the teens with a little bit of snow. And for the NFC championship with the Rams and the Seahawks, I don't think weather's going to be an issue there. Temperatures fall down to the upper 30s. So for us, sleet and freezing rain today, a biting breeze will be with us for tomorrow.
We'll get down to 13 degrees, a frigid start, likely a cold weather advisory.
And guys, we really don't warm up for the rest of the week and heading into the weekend.
Hate to see it.
Hate to see it.
Steve, didn't you say you had a hairdryer nearby somewhere?
What?
We might need you to bar.
We don't have to bar your hair dryer.
Take a look at the Durham camera.
Yeah, let's look at that.
Frozen over.
You can barely see anything.
Frozen over.
Get you to climb up the tower.
Can you go?
Yeah.
It's all that thing out for us.
Can you go take care of that, please?
I wouldn't snoose continues.
Cheers.
Steve will be back.
Steve.
All right, let's take a look at first alert traffic.
So the good news is our crash count has been really low.
And I think that's because a lot of people are staying home.
You can see a lot of red.
That's not congestion on the roads.
That is just where its drive times are just so slow.
We have also got all of that pink, meaning we're seeing icy conditions.
Let's take a live look outside now because we did have a crash at 440, eastbound and Capitol Boulevard.
And now first responders are there on the scene blocking that one lane.
I think because it's an icy spot, they're making.
sure people don't drive in that area. So you see people slowly getting by. Again, left lane blocked
4-4 to eastbound and Capitol below. That'll slow people down. I witness news is committed to keeping you
safe during this winter storm. Our entire team will be working around the clock to keep you updated on
the changing weather conditions. Make sure you have the free ABC 11 mobile app to stay up to the minute.
Even if your power goes out, we'll be right there to help you get through this winter storm.
Here's a live look at Roxburgh. Yeah, where we got an update from officials earlier this morning saying a lot of
the roads were iced over. So keep that in mind.
if you're going to be out and about in that area.
But if you can, stay home.
We'll be right back after the break.
