This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, y'all. I'm Bianca Holman. It's Saturday, July 25th, this morning on eyewitness news. We're following breaking news in the Sandhills, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office investigating a deadly shooting. The details in just a few minutes. Duke Energy backing down.

The electric company now reducing its proposed rate hikes following fallout what customers could expect if the change is approved. And GalaxyCon continues in downtown Raleigh, thousands of fans in town this weekend. The convention serves as a big boost to the local economy. Let's go ahead and take a live look at the Durham skyline right now here at 9 o'clock. It's some more rain and it's some more gray skies, a day to spend indoors, Steve. It's not bad to be inside.

Yeah, we need the rain. Yeah, and we've got a lot of it over the course of the last week, and it's continuing today, but that's going to come to it in a little bit later on this afternoon into the evening hours. You see Durham, though, pretty darn wet out there at this hour. Probably be in the mid-70s around the triangle for highs. Just a few afternoon showers will be left over. The lion's share of the rain is really happening right now. Yesterday we got more rain out there, another three-quarters of an inch.

I mean, we're knocking on the door of 10 inches this month. We average about 5.03 inches for the entire month. So a huge surplus right now. Obviously, we're going to end the month with a surplus. Take a look at the last five days. There are pockets here where you see some of these white shades. That's Doppler estimates of seven inches of rainfall. It has really helped out in a big way.

We had 13 days of rain this month. That's just incredible. And obviously we're adding to that for today. Showers out there right now moving right across the triangle. Pockets of some moderate showers. You see the back edge, though. Once that moves on through, the showers will be more hit and miss. It's been hitting all morning long down in the sand hills.

We've had lots of lightning. Look at all the lightning heading into Clinton now. So you're going to hear it's getting pretty loud. Fayetteville still getting a moderate to heavy shower as we speak. Probability stay elevated until we get to the afternoon. They don't go away completely, but notice how those chances are going to be dwindling. And then later on tonight, things will be quiet, but the clouds could remain. Predictor shows the showers around for a while as we get later in the day.

Still a few leftover showers, five, six o'clock, but most of us just dealing with clouds. Might even see some breaks in the clouds later on for this evening. 67 degrees right now at North Hills with rain out there in a northeasterly breeze. That's two degrees cooler than yesterday. And that northeast breeze stays with us all day. Numbers are going to stay well below average, even after the rain moves on out. Might as well fire the grill up this evening. Really little rain chances, but 70s.

And we're talking low 70s for late July, not bad at all if you want to get out there. and do that. Now we are going to start to heat things back up this week. More on that coming up in just a few minutes. All right. Steve, thank you. Breaking news in just from Fayette and the sheriff's office investigating a deadly shooting. Here's what we know right now. It happened on Marquette Street around four o'clock this morning. A man was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries where he was later pronounced dead. The victim's identity has not been released. Deputies say they do have a suspect in custody. We're also following breaking news from overnight in Raleigh, a pedestrian reportedly struck in front of UNC wrecks. This is video that

our crew was able to grab from the scene. You can see several police cruisers blocking part of the road. We're working to learn more about these injuries and if any charges will be filed. Eyewitness news has reached out to RPD for more information, so stay with us for that update. Well, today, the Holly Springs Police Department sharing a warning about the consequences of children riding emotos. The police department posting this picture on social media after a 13 year old boy lost control of his e-bike and crashed. The boy had to be taken to the hospital for injuries. Police say electric motorcycles require the same skill and legal requirements of a regular motorcycle. Holly Springs holding an e-bike engagement session this evening at 5 p.m. at the north

Maine athletic complex, parents are encouraged to attend with their children. After months of pushbacks and public hearings, a small victory could be on the way for Duke Energy customers. The energy company proposed an 18% rate rate increased over the next two years, but recent negotiations have cut the rate proposal in half. The rate increase would address infrastructure upgrades and investments towards the power grid. That would include a $6.53 increase in 2027 and a $4.60 increase in jump the following year. But customers say they can't shoulder the cost anymore. My first thought is immediately like, oh, 18%, yeah, that's a lot, 9% less than that.

cool, but why are we going up at all right now? Given the cost of living pressures that we know our customers are facing right now, along with the conversations that we've had as part of these discussions, we felt we needed to make a reduction. The rate request must be approved by the North Carolina Utilities Commission. If it moves forward, the change would go into effect in January. Meanwhile, Duke Energy has launched a bill analysis tool for customers to help them understand their bill, monthly impacts, and strategies to help them save over time. Well, now we've got a traffic alert for you. It's going to be a busy traffic day for another huge concert in the area.

Folk pop singer Noah Khan is in town and it's going to take the stage at Carter-Finley Stadium this evening. So here's what to keep in mind if you're headed to the show. You're encouraged to arrive well before the start of the concert to avoid peak travel congestion. Parking lots open at 1.30. And you could expect heavy traffic from 1230 to 6.30. and be sure to buy a parking pass in advance to expedite entry into the parking areas. Plenty of heads turning in downtown Raleigh as superheroes and anime characters take over for GalaxyCon. From movie stars to wrestling legends, GalaxyCon Raleigh has something for everybody.

So the event draws about 50,000 people with all 50 states and nearly a dozen countries represented. In total, it has roughly a $10 million economic impact. But those figures are expected to grow in the years ahead as the city moves forward with its plans to renovate. the convention center and GalaxyCon founders says that it's not just the changes in the building that are factoring into their offerings. We can bring in, you know, more people, we can fit more, you know, we can have more attractions. There's things that we've lost over the years that we can bring back. We're waiting patiently for the Omni. They've broken ground. They're going to build. I think they're going to have a 50,000 square foot bar room. Hopefully we can use. The Sheridan, which we've worked

very well with for years, they're going to become a Western. They're going to gut that. And they're going to have even more space. GalaxyCon runs through Sunday, and they have already signed a deal to return to Raleigh annually through 2031. We have rain around most areas with some thunderstorms going on down in the sandals. We got quite a few hours to go with this rain, and we'll be in the 70s for highs. It is wet out there. We have rain around the area for now. It's going to last for quite a few hours. Numbers will be in the 70s today. Got some thunderstorms going on in the sand hills, really bringing some heavy rain and spots early on this morning. That's the frontal boundary to our south initiating this rain. And again, squeezing out quite a bit of moisture out there this morning. Look at the thunder and lightning going on down in the sand hills. Now we just have showers moving on by. You might hear. thunder. There's the back edge of a lot of the rain too. So we'll get a break and then a few more

spotty showers as we take it through the midday hour. But notice the probabilities do drop off the later we get into the day into the evening hours. So if you're stepping outside anytime in the next three to five hours, I'd have the umbrella handy. 67 degrees right now, North Hills with a northeasterly breeze. Wide-spread 60s, but 70s in the sand hills. Don't expect a big warm-up today. Numbers are going to be well below average even after the rain ends. She'll be just fine for Noah Khan tonight out at Carter Finley. Temperatures in those lower 70s, no rain. She just have clouds around.

I might even see some breaks in the clouds as we get later into the evening hours. So from the Tennessee Valley to the Carolinas in Florida, an active day today. Hot in Dallas, Denver hot too at about 99 degrees. So far this morning, all the major hubs, no delays. Got your seven day in a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you. Well, today Walmart hosting a wellness event. They're going to offer free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, and BMI.

Parks and Wreck. This morning, the wife of a Fort Bragg soldier who died in the Middle East is speaking out. She's remembering her husband. Plus, President Trump pushing forward with the White House Correspondence dinner, his message following that security breach at the original event. Sergeant Michael Switten was killed on July 19th at the airbrill air base in northern Iraq during a controlled donation of a Iranian drone.

His widow, Mia Gonzalez Swinton, speaking out for the first time on CNN saying she feels robbed over the loss of her husband, whom she described as a loving family man. He was so goofy. Anybody that met him, they would say he could roll a joke right off of his tongue. Like, he didn't even have to think about it. His comebacks, oh my goodness, he would have everybody laughing. And then at home, he was so sweet. Like, to our daughter, he was like a big teddy bear to her. She says Sergeant Swinton long to return home to his family as the Iraqi base where he was stationed came under heavy bombardment. The 30-year-old father from Fayetteville served for nearly a decade. Three months after a gunman breached security at the White House Correspondence Center, the event took place last night with tighter security in place. You may recall chaos erupted at the original dinner when suspect Cole Allen allegedly breached security and opened fire inside the Washington Hilton Hotel.

The president delivering a vicious speech pushing back against political violence. But tonight we come back together to answer that heinous attack with unwavering resolve and every one of us here this evening to show that in America we do not yield to political violence. We can't do that. And so one notable addition to the White House Correspondence dinner, an award for exceptional service, being given to Officer Victor Gonzalez, who was injured at the original event three months ago as the gunman rushed towards the ballroom. The staff at the Hilton Hotel also honored for their professionalism and commitment to service. Turning now to one of the biggest headlines in the sports world this weekend, NBA superstar LeBron James headed to Philly.

And his social media post James announced that he had signed a two-year-eight-million dollar deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 41-year-old now entering a record-breaking 24-season. season as a six or big news. Steve, everyone's talking about it. It is. They got some really good talent there. I mean, Embed, he's injured a lot, but if he could stay healthy, that's a be an interesting team. He said, I want to ring. Let's get it. Okay. We got four of them. I guess you need one from every finger. I guess that's how it works. Hey, we got rain out there right now, and the Durham. It's been raining now for a good hour, hour and a half or so. And that's going to end later this afternoon, but it's going to be wet for the first part of the day for sure.

Sunday's a better half, make some plans to get out. I have a stray late day storm in the forecast. Actually, some of the high resolution models have some storms as we go overnight, but they'll be hit and miss as well. And then seasonally hot as we get into next week. Temperatures up around 90 or so. I do have Tuesday as a hottest day. Also, that's the day we have to watch out for some strong storms out ahead of yet another coal front, which will bring our temperatures down a few degrees behind that. We got plenty of rain. Look at all the showers to our south. Most of the rain around the triangle and point. north there's light to moderate. We've got pockets of some moderate rain. But down in the sandhills, it is heavy. Once again, in and around Clinton. You got some thunder and lightning going on over towards Fayetteville as well in southern pines. You got some soaking rain happening as we speak. And again, we got a ways to go with this rain. If you did have a tea time today, the morning's a mess. But later in the day, those chances will start to go down. So it'll be a little bit better. But regardless, it's going to look pretty darn cloudy out there the entire day. There you see the rain showers as we get to the afternoon. The intensity. cities coming down a bit and then we'll see some spotty showers left over late in the afternoon. Otherwise just mainly cloudy. Right now we're looking at the clouds and the rain out there in North Hills with some wet streets and a northeasterly breeze. A widespread low to mid 60s in our northern county. 70 in Smithfield and Fayetteville currently at 73. Again, you've been hearing a lot of thunder in the sand hills. Your evening walk should be fine. It really don't have much in the way of rain chances, a lot of clouds. Although you might be dodging a couple of puddles out there on that walk after.

dinner this evening. As we look to our Monday, partly cloudy near normal, sea breeze will kick up a shower down east. We'll be fine. Then as we go into Tuesday out ahead of the front, we have to watch out for some thunderstorms that could roll in. Some of those could be strong to severe. We'll keep an eye on that. The timing's still a little bit in question. Rainy today at the beaches tomorrow, not bad at all. Maybe make some plans to get out there. It should be a fantastic day at the coast tomorrow. 70s today. Low to mid-70s triangle, upper 70s in the sand hills. The lion's share of this event is happening now and it'll last until around two or so this afternoon. And then tonight mainly just mostly cloudy skies,

there'll be some breaks in the clouds here and there. And pleasant temperatures low, mid-60s, going to be a nice start to a fantastic day tomorrow. I do have an isolated storm that could pop up, especially tomorrow late evening hours. Tuesday, watch out for a strong to severe storm. The timing's still in question. It might actually be Tuesday night now. We'll have to fine tune that as we get closer, but there is a risk already of severe weather. And then behind the front, looking good, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. All right, Steve, thank you. Rise and shine. Hopefully you're up right now. The time now, 927. Here's a live look at sunset beach. Great skies out there too by the water. Good morning, Carolina. It's Saturday. July 25th, I'm Bianco Holman. You're watching eyewitness news right now on ABC 11 and wherever you stream. The top stories and all the day's news is just ahead. But first, let's check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart. Steve, we're usually saying, hey, here's the best time for your tea time or going out on pickleball. And none of that's happening today. Well, it'll be better if you wait until like after three or four in the afternoon.

You could step outside a little bit. It's wet out there, but the rain might not be falling to your area at that point in time. But it's coming down right now. Here we are in the Durham. You can see the raindrops falling and stuck to the lens as well. A good soaking rain for a lot of us out there. We'll be in the 70s for highs today. We're not going to warm up much at all.

But the majority of the rain is this morning. Again, spotty afternoon shower in its wake. And yesterday was 75. Yesterday we got more rain. And now we're knocking on the door of getting 10 inches of rain for the month. We average just over five. What an incredible surplus we're dealing with. And just the last five days alone,

we're seeing those magenta colors and the white colors. That's six to seven inches of rain in many areas that pick that up. absolute soaking out there. This is going to take a nice bite out of the drought. New drought monitor comes out next Thursday. We'll be watching. Looking forward to that in a big way, but just incredible numbers to see surpluses like this with nearly 10 inches of rain. Still raining now. Notice the back edge here. You look upstream and there's still some more rain. So we're not done yet. And where you see this green box, that entire area, that's a flood advisory. We've had so much rain. The recent days of ground is saturated. These are heavy downpour.

that are moving on by. So we're going to see some flooding concerns down in the sand hills. Just maybe if you can stay in, do that. The creeks and streams are going to be coming up. Urban areas, roads are going to have some flooding concerns as well. So maybe to stay in if you can't. Notice the rain chances do go down. They don't go away, but they really come down as we get later into the afternoon hours. And by the evening, we'll be completely done with the rain. Predict you're showing that as well. Rain continues as we get into the early afternoon. late afternoon, not much left over, but that northeast breeze is with us all day and the temperatures will have a tough time recovering. 67 degrees right now. It's wet out there with that northeasterly breeze, widespread 60s, but we're still seeing some 70s down in the sandhills, and that's also closer to the stalled front and the thunderstorms that are going on.

I say fire the grill up. Low 70s, late July for an early evening. That's pretty good. And again, really low rain chances at that time. We will crank the heat back up, but not too hot this next week. More on that coming up in a few minutes. All right, Steve Vang. New this hour, Raleigh Police announcing the arrest of another teen connected to the July 14 takeover. RPD, obtaining a secure custody order for a 15-year-old, that person now being held at the juvenile detention center. They are facing a list of charges for the violence in Briar Creek, including assault with a deadly weapon, felony riot, and possession of a firearm by a minor. Earlier this week, police arrested a 17-year-old for violence on Capitol Boulevard, as well as a 16-year-old connected to a shooting on Glenwood Avenue.

In total, six juveniles have now been charged. The time down 931. This morning, a carry man headed to Granada to help search for his missing wife. Elizabeth Liz Waddell has been missing on the Caribbean island since Wednesday. Despite the missing person posted description, Waddell's husband tells eyewitness news she's actually about five feet tall. with short blonde hair. Liz Waddell's husband, Kaylin, serves as a park recreation and cultural resource manager for the town of Carrie. Now to an update on a shooting investigation in Durham,

police telling eyewitness news the man was seriously hurt. Chopper 11 was over the scene Friday night on Farnosa Avenue off Fayetteville Street. Police say the suspect and the victim were known to each other. Police do not believe there is a threat to the community. We're following a developing story out of Wake Forest where a pretty rough crash of multiple injured Friday evening. A van hit a golf cart as it was crossing the street at the intersection of Stonewick Lane and Stony Hill Road.

According to Northern Wake Fire, two miners were in the cart when it was hit. They were taken to Duke as trauma patients and the driver of the van was not injured. We're keeping our eye on the economy this morning. The number of foreclosures are rising. New analysis by ABC News and ABC-owned television stations find that a good portion of our viewing areas show some of the highest foreclosure rates in the state. There were more than 5,400 foreclosures between 2020 and 2025 and the zip code starting with 275. Almost 36% of those homeowners were people of color just to the south and zip code starting with 283. There were more than 7,000

foreclosures in the same time period. 44% of those impacted were people of color. A local realtor says the number is still relatively low, averaging about 200 a year. It's really not a high representation. We're coming back to a normalized period from pre-pandemic, but we're certainly not in a pandemic era sort of scared. And so that really tells eyewitness news. There are more foreclosures in this section of the state because there's more inventory. We've still got time to give to our Stop the Hunger campaign. Maybe catch up on some of your favorite shows. Rain for a good part of the day. It'll taper off as we get later in the afternoon. Seventies for temperatures. Had some thunderstorms and still some thunder and lightning going on down in the sandhills right now. Really close to that stalled frontal boundary squeezing out some heavier rain there. And the risk of some flooding going on, we have a flood advisory for a huge area from Lee County all the way down towards south. of Fayetteville and into Samson County.

See the lightning that's been going on there and really heavy downpourous. Moderate showers and move through the triangle, but Durham, you're about to get a break. And that break might last a good 30, 45 minutes before another batch of showers is going to come in a little bit later on. So again, kind of an indoor day. Once you step outside, have the umbrella handy. Yeah, we'll make it to the 70s this afternoon. But later in the day, those rain chances will start to come down and really a pleasant evening to take a walk. 67 into North Hills right now with a northeasterly breeze at 6.

Wide spread low to mid-60s with low 70s down in the sand hills. Not going to warm up a whole heck of a lot as we go throughout the day today. Noa Khan in town, listen, I think it's going to be just fantastic. Temperature 70s, really low rain chance. Clouds could be a bit stubborn, but you'll see breaks in the clouds as well later on this evening. So from the Tennessee Valley through the Carolinas, we have rain today. New York's good. Denver's hot with a few storms.

Dallas is scorching. Same thing in Salt Lake City. So far all the major hubs, though, this morning have been looking pretty darn good. I do want to mention if you're flying to Hawaii anytime soon, Hurricane Fausto, a Category 2 storm. By Wednesday, it'll be a tropical storm really, really close there to the Big Island and Honolulu as well. Got some delays already now in Chicago. Pack your patience. Got your 7 in a few minutes, beyond you. All right, Steve, thanks for that heads up.

Chick-fil-A is warning customers after a cyber attack targeted its loyalty program. The fast food chain says hackers use email address. and passwords obtained from a third-party source to access some of Chick-fil-A-1 accounts. Last month, the company says names, email addresses, membership ID numbers, and the last four digits of some payment cards may have been exposed. Chik-fil-A says it's locked, affected customers out of their accounts and removed stored payment methods. Your Apple music subscription just got a little bit more pricey. Apple raising the prices for for the first time since 2022. The cost of individual music plan increased by a dollar, while

And growing tick concerns during our summer months here. A local doctor sharing advice on how you and your family can stay protected. This morning in your health check, the push to get more men to pursue a career long dominated by women.

There's a growing demand for nurses across the country. And now some nursing schools are trying to fill the gap. Here's ABC's Hannah Batah. You feel that, Earl? Feel a whoa. That's a no. All right, now I just apply the dermal bond. On shows like The Pit and St. Dennis Medical,

male nurses are front and center. You don't actually have a few scars, and they're kind of cool. Shows you went through something and came out the other side. Offscreen, they're still rare, just one and eight. The stigma is that men don't necessarily have the carrying role or the caring function,

and that's for women. Nurse Chris Jones says patients often assume he's the doctor. I feel like I have to clarify that at least once or twice a week. I'm very introduced myself with my title. Professor Curry-Bordelon is working to change all of this at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where nearly one in six nursing students is now male, outpacing the national average. The school features male students in its marketing and sends nurses into high schools to recruit. It's more and more representation within the academic setting, and when they see these faculty members in outreach programs, it allows them to say, if you choose

this career, you will be very fulfilled in this career. And the timing couldn't be better. Nearly 200,000 nursing jobs are expected to open up every year for the next decade. The paycheck doesn't hurt either. The median salary for registered nurses now tops $90,000 a year. With nurses, obviously, job security is there. And we can go to bed knowing that we can pick up the next day to take really good care of patients. So it's reassuring, honestly. And experts say more men and scrubs could mean better care, especially for male patients who are less likely to seek it out. Our patients want to have providers that look like them, whether it be age, race, gender, and when they do, they tend to open up more.

Bordelon's message to men still on the fence? Now more than ever men are needed within nursing. Hannah Bataa, ABC News, New York. Hannah, thank you. If you're planning on spending time outdoors this summer, health experts are urging you to take steps to protect yourself from ticks. The CDC reports Lyme and other tick-borne illness diseases are surging with emergency department visits for tick bites across the southeast reaching their highest level in 10 years. Doctors say simple precautions can help lower your wrists.

Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and a hat and making sure that once you come inside, you start to check for a tick as soon as possible. This could be after taking a shower, but making sure that you look at places where ticks like to hide, which are generally crevices. So thinking about inside the arms, inside the knees, behind the. ears and also on the skull. And so if you've been bitten by a tick and develop fever, fatigue, headache, or joint or muscle aches, or even this bollas eye rash, you should call your doctor. All right, Steve, a lot of people are going to be spending some time indoors. Maybe it's the movie, maybe it's a puzzle, maybe it's cleaning, you know, nothing really too much outdoors right now. Probably be cleaning if it were for me. I know how these days work for me. Like, hey, you could do,

yeah, okay, so that's, that'll be happening. Got rain out there right now. Durham about to get a break in the rain before more showers come in a little bit later on. This should all be ending as we get later into the afternoon. Sunday is by far the better day of the two. Get out and enjoy it if you can. Might be a little bit too wet to get the yard work done, but if you can do that too, I do have a stray storm late in the day, and especially late evening, too. There could be some thunderstorms around midnight or so, and then next week, season will be hot. Not big heat. The average is 91 will be close to that. A front comes in. It could bring some strong storms Tuesday evening. And then behind the front, we're near 90 for a few days. That's not bad at all. There you see the rain out there right now, and it's really filling in the sand hills with some heavier rain. We have a flooded advisory in effect there. The showers have been moving through Wake County, but notice the back edge there. So Durham about to get a break for at least a good hour or so before some more showers start to move in. But it has been heavy at times down in the sand hills. So minor flooding with urban and small stream type of stuff do anticipate that for the next couple of hours. The grant was already pretty much saturated. So getting this heavy rain on it can't infiltrate the soil. If you did have a tea time today, well, it's going to be a mess out there. However, notice that later we get in the day, the rain chances do really start to come down,

more drizzly and light at that time. And predict you're kind of showing that too. The intensity or the heavier rain starts to let up, and then spotty showers as we go late afternoon. And by the evening hours, we're looking good. Might even get some breaks in the clouds later on this evening. Right now we have the rain out there at North Hills. They've been stuck at 67 degrees for a while. A northeasterly breeze about six miles an hour.

60s for most. We've got some low 70s in the sandhills closer to the stalled front. And that's also where we're seeing the heavier rain of thunderstorm. Evening out, if you're going to take a walk, maybe a puddle or two, but I think we're completely done with the rain. And to have low 70s in late July, not bad at all for your after-dinner walk through the neighborhood. So we'll watch for our Monday. Nice day.

This is sea breeze oriented. That's not going to make it. I expected to be a dry day. Tuesday we'll watch the next front getting closer and you'll see some thunderstorm starting to roll in out ahead of it. We have to watch and see a few of those could be strong to severe. We'll keep an eye on it for you very closely. Rain today, not tomorrow. So tomorrow's a better day.

Maybe make a plan to head out to the beach. It should be really a nice day tomorrow. We're wet for a good part of the day today. Numbers in the 70s. Tonight we'll have lows in the 60s, mostly cloudy, maybe some breaks in the clouds later on tonight. And then tomorrow. A fantastic day. I do have that stray storm in the forecast in the afternoon. I think a little better chance closer to midnight of a few storms. Tuesday, that's the day we'll watch. There could be some storms. Question on the timing here might be after dinner time when the thunderstorms roll in. And then really nice behind the front, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. All right. Steve, thank you. its billionth guest, eight-year-old Andres Robles from Arizona became the one billionth person to visit California theme park. He was there celebrating his birthday. The milestone also came during the park's 70th birthday celebration. Disneyland first opened in 1955. Disney is the parent company of ABC 11. Aren't they supposed to get like passes for the rest of their life or something like that? Ooh, that'd be nice. I think that's what happened in the 80s with this one kid, he went to Disney World and he could go for the rest of his life for free. Oh, all right. Hopefully they gave him something.
