Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. I'm Michael Perchik, in for Bianca Holman. It is Saturday, June 6th this morning on eyewitness news. Right now, we are following breaking news. Two people are shot in Raleigh overnight what we know about their condition. A pedestrian is struck and killed by a train in Cumberland County what authorities there are telling us about the incident. Plus, in Harnet County, a man is charged after a child is killed and another is seriously heard in a tractor trailer crash. What we know about the investigation. Yesterday we topped out in 96. We're going to be really close to that number again today.
Starting point is 00:00:49 More heat coming our way and this could be a trend that lasts for quite a while. I've got your forecast. Steve, thanks. Right now we're following breaking news. A man is behind bars after shooting leaves. two people hurt in Raleigh. Police respond to the scene around 1.45 this morning on Glenwood Avenue. When officers got there, they say they found a man shot in the hand and a woman shot in the leg. We're told they were rushed to the hospital and are expected to be okay. The suspect was taken into custody. This is an ongoing investigation. Now to breaking news out of Cumberland
Starting point is 00:01:19 County, a pedestrian is hit and killed by a train in Fayetteville. Around three this morning, emergency crews responded to the scene near Cumberland Road and Londale Street. When crews arrived Deputies say they found the victim located closer to Cumberland Road Bridge over the tracks in a wooded area. We're told the victim died at the scene. This crash is under investigation. Now let's take a look at the Raleigh skyline. We are tracking a long stretch of heat. Let's send it over to meteorologist Steve Stewart to break that down for us. Steve, what's on tap this afternoon? Yeah, another hot one. For sure, we're going to have temperatures in those mid-90s for highs today. We'll get some passing high clouds around kind of filtering the sun just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:01:59 but it's not terribly humid today. Maybe a little bit more than yesterday. We did top out at 96 at R2.U yesterday. That was by far the hottest spot, though. 99 and 44 of the records on the state and over a half inch deficit on our rainfall. I really don't have rain coming anytime soon. Maybe a stray shower with the front on Monday.
Starting point is 00:02:15 The better chance in the sand hills. It's really Thursday and Friday. We'll up those a little bit just because of moisture content is going to go up. That also means the heat index is going to be coming back in a big way. It's going to feel quite hot. Out of the lake today, those numbers in the 90s. UV index is going to be high. Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen. At times, though, those high clouds will give us filtered sunshine as they continue drifting on by. You can see that with predictor showing those clouds kind of drifting in at times as we come in to the mid-afternoon hours from the north and the west. And then partly cloudy skies as we get to the evening. Got some high clouds now, 76 out of North Hills with a southwest breeze at 12. That breeze helps out a little bit. Due points near 16. That dew point's going to fall a little bit more as we get to the afternoon. Seventy-seven Roxburgh.
Starting point is 00:02:59 in Lewisburg, 78 Rocky Mount Wilson and Fayetteville at 76 degrees. Evening plans you're heading out at the Deepak tonight to see Hamilton. About 90s you're walking in. You head back to your car, not bad at all, about 79 degrees. Get used to this heat. We've got more coming next week. Details in just a few minutes. Steve, thanks.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Right now we are counting down to game three of the Stanley Cup final in Las Vegas. Puck drop at 8 o'clock tonight. You can catch all the action right here on ABC 11. The cardiac canes did it again Thursday night, becoming the first team since 1944. Steve, you remember that, to trail by multiple goals with less than 10 minutes left in a Stanley Cup final game and win. Chopper 11 catching their Delta charter flight taking off from RDU yesterday afternoon. Carolina has not lost a road of playoff game so far looking to keep that streak going. And we have full team coverage on the ground in Sin City.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Look out for Trayvon Miles and Kate Roderson reporting from Las Vegas. as the Keynes continue their quest for the Cup. Again, puck drop for game three tonight at 8 o'clock, Game 4 Tuesday, also in Vegas, all of that only right here on ABC 11. Now we know the Lenovo Center is the loudest house in the NHL and how fans can impact a game. Cain's players say that's exactly what happened Thursday night, getting them fired up in that third period to kickstart that dramatic comeback win. But it wasn't just the noise.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It was what those fans were wearing. or better yet not wearing while making it. We're talking about the tarps off trend. We've seen it at different sporting events for the past several months when guys take off their shirts and spin them around. Jemise Price speaking with a dad and son who got in on that fun. Petey Pablo has long told us to take your shirt off, twist it around your hand, spin it like a helicopter.
Starting point is 00:04:55 But this time, Carolina is raising up to a new phenomenon. This one, tarps off, baby. The craze has been sweeping ballparks and sports arenas, and it literally shifted the energy inside the Lenovo Center during game two of the Stanley Cup final. I've heard of Terps off before, but I didn't know how infectious it would be as soon as it happened. Yeah, it was really something to experience. Dad and son, Jason and Mason Waterstratt were among the thousands of fans who felt the shift. The boys never lost faith in the team. You know, then the magical tarps off happened,
Starting point is 00:05:37 and then the energy was just injected right back into the team. And everyone in the stadium, every single person in the stadium was behind them. The canes were down in the third period, two to nothing, when there was a request for tarps off. And men quickly came out of their shirts, shirts off, and screaming fans, including nine-year-old superfan Mason. I just decided to join in. A day later, Mason and Dad still reeling in the moment inside this Kane's corner.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Pretty insane and I'm crazy. I've seen a random shirt here and there come off, but never like last night. I mean, there must have been a thousand plus people that went tarps off. Today, fans, even stormy, are all reliving that night. And now there's a shirt to mark the moment. Jemis, thanks with those temperatures Steve was mentioning. I'm going to expect a lot of tarps off at watch parties across the triangle later tonight. And while fans are still celebrating that game two win, some Cain season ticket holders say they never got their chance to buy tickets in the first place.
Starting point is 00:06:40 North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is now demanding answers from Ticketmaster. After complaints about problems during the Stanley Cup final ticket presale. Jackson says some season ticket holders logged on with a valid pre-sale code but got stuck in long queues or a push to the back of the line because of technical issues. Many say by the time they got through, tickets were gone and only resale seats costing thousands of dollars remain. Jackson wants Ticketmaster to explain what went wrong, how many tickets actually went to season ticket holders, and what steps were taken to try and stop bots. He's giving the company one week to respond. Right now the race is on to contain the Ebola outbreak as cases continue to rise. We'll take a look at a new report from the CDC.
Starting point is 00:07:23 And after two young children were killed in the crash into Fayetteville this week, we're taking a closer look at car seat safety, what parents need to know. Heating up out there, already seeing temperatures climbing to the 70s, mid-70s around the triangle, Roxborough as well, Fayetteville at 76, 90s this afternoon, be ready for another hot day and even hotter tomorrow. Details coming up. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11 eyewitness news. Welcome back to everyone. Happy Saturday. one out there today. Temperatures are going to be in the 90s and not terribly humid. Do
Starting point is 00:07:59 points are going to be in check again maybe a touch higher than yesterday and we'll get some passing clouds at times. These are high level clouds just filtering out the sun. You can see those kind of drifting in right now coming in from the north and west. Any rain and thunderstorm activity is a long way away. We're going to be dry. Good day out there. If you want to go to the swimming pool or maybe those splash pads to cool down and at times again the clouds will be thick enough to maybe filter out the sun briefly. But Again, this is all high level clouds. So 76 into North Hills with the high clouds.
Starting point is 00:08:29 That's a couple degrees warmer than yesterday. That southwest breeze feels a bit nice out there. 77 Lewisburg, 78 Rocky Mount Wilson and 77 also in Roxburgh. Evening plans if you're heading downtown for the concert tonight, a little bit on the hot side early but pleasant later in the evening. Got your 70 forecast in just a few minutes, Michael. Steve, we have to get you some walk-of-music because your timing from walking from the weather center over to the big board is just like WWES.
Starting point is 00:08:54 It's fantastic. All right. Now to Durham, where police tell eyewitness news. A man was stabbed around 9 o'clock last night along Arlington Street, not far from Pearson Elementary School. This video from a breaking news crew on the scene shows a large police response. The man who was stabbed was taken to the hospital and has expected to be okay. Durham, police say they do have a person in custody. And this morning we're learning new details but a serious crash in Harnett County. Police now say an eight-year-old boy was killed. After the car he was in was rear-ended by a tractor trailer while stopped at arrest. light causing it to slam into another vehicle. This is from Chopper 11 flying over that aftermath yesterday afternoon. Police say a woman and nine-year-old girl in the car with the boy have life-threatening injuries. They say the driver, a passenger, and an infant in the third vehicle have minor injuries. We're told the driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt. He's charged with misdemeanor death and is being held in the Hornet County Jail. Raleigh Police have made an arrest in a deadly hit and run that killed a 54-year-old woman.
Starting point is 00:09:51 25-year-old Isaiah Gray is charged with felony hit and run and a probation violation. Investigators say Gray hit Nicole White on the evening of May 15th as White was crossing Newburn Avenue. That's right near the Wake Inn. The investigation found White was not in the crosswalk when she was hit. Gray is being held in the Wayne County Jail as he waits to get transferred to Raleigh. And this morning we're shining a spotlight on things made right here in the Tar Heel State. We'll take you to Big Spoon Roasters in Hillsboro to see how a couple turn their side. hustle into big butter business. This morning we have the latest on the Ebola virus that is sick
Starting point is 00:10:31 in hundreds of people and killed dozens. That's according to the DRC and Uganda Ministries of Health. On Friday, the CDC released new reports about the outbreak and how this could affect us right here in the U.S. ABC's Michelle Franzen has more. As the number of Ebola cases continues to rise, the CDC has released three reports discussing the outbreak in Central Africa and what it means for those in the U.S. The document, say first since the World Health Organization declared an emergency of international concern May 17th. The CDC warns that without strong interventions from public health officials, the outbreak in remote areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda could surpass the 2014 to 2016
Starting point is 00:11:14 West Africa crisis. The agency says it's working aggressively with federal and international partners to support response efforts. The CDC states Americans who are not Traveling to affected countries do not need to change any behavior, adding federal agencies or conducting public health screenings at four airports to prevent Ebola from entering the U.S. There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for Bundabudjo virus, which means our public health preparedness infrastructure, such as screening, surveillance, and infection control is doing significant work. Africa's CDC and the WHO are launching a six-month $518 million preparedness and response plan
Starting point is 00:11:59 to help countries detect, prepare, and respond to Ebola. It brings together governments, partners, and communities under a unified approach to strengthen response measures. The plan complements the national response plans launched by the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as Uganda. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. Retirees covered by the state health plant, Medicare Advantage plant, will soon pay more for doctor visits, hospital stays, imaging services, and some prescription drugs. That's because a benefit change is approved for 2027. The state health plan board of trustees voted yesterday to make changes to the benefits of retirees covered by the Medicare Advantage base plan or enhanced plan offered through Humana. The change impacts more than 176,000 people.
Starting point is 00:12:48 And happening this weekend, Wake County Veterans Stand. down. Veterans in need of support are invited to come out today for a free day of services and care all in one place. Some of those services include showers and hygiene kits, free haircuts, hot breakfast and lunch, pet services and health screenings. It runs until 3.30 this afternoon at William Peace University on East at Peace Street in Raleigh. Sticking in the capital city here's a live look at downtown Raleigh from our Pendo Sky Camman 301 Hillsborough Street. Steve we have slowly started to see some of those temperatures
Starting point is 00:13:21 creep up throughout the course of the morning. I know that upward trend, the hockey stick of sorts, only going to keep going through the next couple hours. Yeah, it is. It'll be a hot one today, but not terribly humid. So a lot of times we get that heat index where it gets dangerous. That is not the case. It's just going to be up there, though, temperature-wise, in the 90s all the way through the afternoon hours. Durham looking pretty good there. A little bit of haze off in the distance. We have some high clouds that are drifting overhead as well, but definitely going to be a sizzling hot weekend with flirting with 100 tomorrow. Just shy of that probably. I've got us at 98 degrees. Still hot on Monday. There could be an isolated or stray shower, a thunderstorm,
Starting point is 00:13:56 but this is really going to be in the sand hills closer to a front. I'll show you that coming up. And little to no relief, more 90s as we headed in next week. Now, if you take a look at how many 90s we've had so far this year compared to the last decade, well, we're sitting at number one right now. On average, it's usually closer to like six or so. Look all the way back in 20, 23, none at this point. So does this mean anything? Not necessarily, but take a look at the. the next few days. How many days we're going to be above that 90 degree mark? There's a lot of them over the next 10 days. So we're going to add to that number in a big way. High clouds are drifting in right now. We'll see that from time to time today. Maybe thick enough to give us just a little filtered sunshine.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Not much chance at rain on Monday. We'll keep the low chances going up at a little bit Thursday and Friday. Humidity values will come up. But without a triggering mechanism, it's just the heat and humidity that'll cause the pop-up showers. The thunderstorms and falls like continues to go down now. 5.16 inch or feet below full pool. And keep in mind, that's the most, it's been that low since 2011. The record was back in 2007, 2007, 2008. In that drought, we had about nearly nine feet below full pool at that time. So numbers in the 90s today, UV index is high. Make sure you have lots of sunscreen. But at times we'll have the clouds passing on by. That pool will be pretty popular today. Our model maybe overdoes the cloud cover, but this is primarily higher clouds. cover so it'll still be some filtered sunshine. Right now we're seeing some clouds out there. 76 degrees at North Hills. Dewpoint are about 60 so not bad. A little bit higher due point than yesterday. Numbers in the mid-70s, fairly uniform temperatures out there with Rocky Mount Wilson currently at 78 degrees. Bulls in action tonight if you're heading out there to watch them take on
Starting point is 00:15:41 the nights, 90 about start time and then closer to 80 by the time you head home. Overall, should be a nice evening and not terribly humid. This front settles to the south. There's There could be an isolated shower, thunderstorm near the front later in the day on Monday. Most of us are going to miss out. If you get rain, consider yourself lucky. And then the high is going to push a little cooler air. I stress a little about 89 for the high. And then we'll go right back to the 90s on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:16:06 Beaches today should be pretty darn popular. Numbers in the 80s today and tomorrow. The rip current danger is moderate the high, though, especially on the crystal coast. So just keep that in mind if you're heading out there today. Numbers in the low to mid-90s. It's a hot one today with some passing high. clouds and then tonight low temperatures will be in the mid to even some upper 60s so a little warmer tonight and a hot one tomorrow at 98 degrees 95 Monday most of us will miss out on any rain farther south you have a chance at least I think the better chances Thursday and Friday but it's still just pop up showers on thunderstorms but hot mid 90s and more humid so the tailgating for that canes game gonna feel a bit different Michael Steve thanks now's a good time to download the ABC 11 mobile app will send all the the weather headlines directly to your device.

Starting point is 00:17:40 Move over peanut butter. We're talking nut butter, specifically an award-winning brand co-owned by a North Carolina couple. We're taking you inside Big Spoon Roasters in the days North Carolina made. It starts as a love story. Mark and Megan Overbay meet in 2010. We really bonded over our love of food and cooking and how food brings people together. Dreaming of starting a food business together, Mark remembers his days in the Peace Corps in Zimbabwe,
Starting point is 00:18:09 roasting local peanuts and crushing them into a paste. I added a little bit of honey and sea salt and coconut oil, and it was better than any peanut butter I'd ever bought. So as a side hustle, they rented a commercial kitchen in downtown Durham making nut butters, and Megan and Endurance athlete making nut butter energy bars. In 2011, they launched big spoon roasters at the Carborough Farmers Market. We were taking this new culinary approach to nut butter that hadn't been taken before. We were trying to market and ask people to think about nut butters the way that a lot of people already think about maybe wine or even coffee. And then we got amazing press nationally through like Bon Appetit Magazine, Food and Wine Magazine.
Starting point is 00:18:50 We started to get flooded with emails for requests. from not just people who wanted to order our products, but stores who wanted to bring our products in, like big stores, like Harris Teeter and Whole Foods. Fifteen years later, this is Big Spoon Roasters, a beautiful facility in Hillsborough, showcasing award after award from the culinary giants, cranking out multiple flavors, pistachio crunch, their number one seller, still selling energy bars, Big Spoon merch, and even Wag Butters for dogs. So they have ingredients like flax and chia seeds and pumpkin. that are good for dogs, coats, and digestion.
Starting point is 00:19:25 So what started as a love story still is. From the name Big Spoon. My dad's nickname is Big Spoon because of the way he eats peanut butter right out of the spoon with like a big serving spoon. To staying true to their mission. We wanted to source only from like-minded farmers and producers, and we wanted all of the products
Starting point is 00:19:43 that we made to reflect our values all the way to the consumer. So we didn't take any outside investors and just did it our way. Their way, North Carolina made. Barbara, thanks. Summer break is just days away from many kids across the triangle. With the school year ending, the State Department of Public Instruction is making sure kids don't go hungry this summer with its Sun Meals program. Every day, families can go to certain locations and grab a free lunch.
Starting point is 00:20:07 It's for all kids 18 and under. You don't need a proof of income to apply, and you can find a list of all those locations where the free meals will be on the website at summer meals for NCKKKids.org. This morning, the search continues for two escaped inmates from Vance County. straight ahead new details on the manhunt underway and we're taking a closer look at car seat safety after tragic crash in fadeville a live look at downtown derm as folks in the bull city trying to find ways to beat the heat that's going to be a big topic later this afternoon good morning carolina it is saturday i'm michael perchikin for bianca holman you are watching eyewitness news now on abc 11 and wherever you stream this top stories and all the day's news is just ahead but first let's Check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart, who can give us the insight there. We know a lot of people want to get outside for the weekend.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Yeah. What can they expect of the next few hours? A hot summer day, but not terribly humid. You know, yesterday was 96 degrees, so we're going to be really close to that number for today. Got some high clouds passing on by right now, and we'll see more of that as we go throughout the day. Today we've got us at 95 degrees. The normal highs 85. And again, yesterday we hit 96.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Today's record 99. That should stay safe, but we're going to be even hotter tomorrow. We can be flirting with 100 degrees. An isolated shower, thunderstorm on Monday, mainly to our south. Maybe Thursday and Friday will up that chance just a little bit. As more moisture is going to be with us, but the lack of any triggering mechanism, it's just a heat and humidity can cause pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Overall, it's a lot of hot conditions and dry conditions, too, coming our way.
Starting point is 00:21:45 We in the 90s today, make sure the kids have plenty of sunscreen on at times. We'll get those mid and high-level clouds that thicken up just a little bit. And predictors kind of showing that, too, as we go through the, early afternoon hours and then by the evening will be partly cloudy. Right now we're looking at some high clouds and 76 at North Hills with a breeze about 12. That feels pretty good. That's a couple degrees warmer than this time. Yesterday, mid-70s in Oxford, 75 Raleigh, 76 in the Fayetteville and Rocky Mount Wilson currently at 78 degrees. Evening plans, if you're heading to Deepak tonight to see Hamilton 90 as you're walking in by the time you head home at around 79 degrees. Get used to it. We've got more big heat this coming week. More on that coming up in just a few minutes. Michael. Steve, thanks. Right now we're following breaking news. A man is behind bars after shooting leaves two people hurt in Raleigh. Police response to the scene around 1.45 this morning on Glenwood Avenue. When officers got there, they say they found a man shot in the hand and a woman shot in the leg. We're told they were rushed to the hospital and they're expected to be okay. The suspect was taken into custody. This is an ongoing investigation.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And now to breaking news out of Cumberland County. A pedestrian is hitting killed by a train in Fade film. Around 3 o'clock this morning, emergency crews responded to the senior Cumberland Road in Lawndale Street. When crews arrived, deputies say they found the victim located closer to Cumberland Road Bridge over the tracks in a wooded area. We're told the victim died at the scene. That crash also remains under investigation. This morning, Roxborough police say a man wanted for attempted murder has turned himself in. 32-year-old Gibrient Avian Stanton surrendered to police Friday afternoon. Investigators say they believe he's responsible for shooting 22.
Starting point is 00:23:25 year old Sherrod Edward. Officers responded to a call of shots fired along Monroe Street around about 11 o'clock Thursday night. Police say that's where they found Edwards with gunshot wounds. We're told he was rushed to the hospital and remained in critical condition. According to investigators, Stanton was released from prison just last year after he was convicted of attempted murder in-person County back in 2012. This morning, the two inmates who escape from the Vance County Jail earlier this week remain on the run. The Vance County Sheriff says the escape was planned in the and men are getting help as they evade authorities.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Take a look at this video right here. This is video of 33 old Michael Miles, also known as Mike Mike and 21 year old Lashon Knott making their escape on Wednesday. It's still not clear exactly how they were able to get away. Now pay attention to the screen. These new digital billboards are set up across the state helping authorities in that search.
Starting point is 00:24:14 Please say if you see either man, column 911 and do not approach them, they are considered armed and dangerous. This morning, a tragic crash in fade. where two children died a sparking conversation about car seat safety. Experts say one knows safety device can prevent every injury, promptly restraining a child can make a life-saving difference. Penelope Lopez spoke with local safety advocates about what parents should know.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Every crash is different, but doctors, firefighters, and child safety advocates all agree on one thing. Securing your child can be life-saving. I have seen accidents where there have been deaths in the vehicle and the child was properly restrained. and they were totally unscathed. For 21 years, Stacey Coons has cared for children in the emergency room at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She says one of the biggest misconceptions is moving a child out of a booster seat too soon.
Starting point is 00:25:08 If you look at how my knees are here and they come off of the seat, that's really important. That tells you that they're ready for the lap belt and the shoulder belt because it's gonna meet them across here instead of across the neck where when you get into a car accident, it pulls really tightly. After Wednesday's deadly crash on Cedar Creek Road where three children were not in car seats,
Starting point is 00:25:28 safety experts like Marianne Murphy with the Fayetteville Fire Department says using a car seat correctly matters. You should not be able to pinch the fabric. If you can pinch it, it's too loose. The CDC says half of children ages 8 to 12 in 2023 who died in crashes were not buckled up. When we conduct these classes, we ensure that the parent is understanding that I'm not trying to fix the child. I've got to fix you because I can't fix the child if you still have the same behaviors. You have to take that extra five minutes and just make sure that everybody's restrained properly. And the Fayetteville Fire Department offers free car seat checks at three of their locations.
Starting point is 00:26:08 And the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation offers free car and booster seats for eligible families. You can find all that information on our website. Reporting in Fayetteville, I'm Penelope Lopez. ABC 11, eyewitness news. Such important advice, Penelope, thanks. After months of debate, the Chapel Hill Carborough School Board voted Thursday night to close Glenwood Elementary. Glenwood was one of three schools under review as the district faced declining enrollment, rising costs, and aging facilities. District leaders say those pressures drove the decision, while supporters argued the school's role in the community will be difficult to replace. What I've been impressed with is just how many parents are invested in the school and how invested the teachers are.
Starting point is 00:26:50 I think they really rushed this decision. Leaders say the closure could save nearly $2 million a year with additional revenue possible from the sale of the property. Glenwood will remain open through the upcoming school year and officials say school-based programs will continue after the closure, but details could change during redistricting. Leaders also say the public will have a chance to weigh in before any plan is finalized. Right now, the Cains are in Sin City for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final. We'll take a look at how their playoff run is energizing a new generation of youth hockey. players right here in the triangle.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Heating up outside. Temperatures now in those 70s that will be in the 80s here. Pretty soon. We've got some high clouds around, but those numbers are going to be in the 90s again today, even hotter tomorrow. Details coming up. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11. I Witness News.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Welcome back, everybody. Good morning to you. A hot one today is those temperatures are going to be in the 90s, mid-90s around the triangle in Fayetteville. Look at some passing clouds, maybe some filtered sunshine at times today. You can see those kind of drifting in here from the north and west, but no rain out there. We're going to be dry for a while. Those splash pads will be popular, a way to cool down, those 90s this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:28:04 And at times again, we're going to see that filtered sunshine with the high cloud streaming on by. 76 of North Hills right now. That breeze feels pretty good. Dewpoint near 60. That's not bad. It's a little bit more humid than recent days. 79 now in Lewisburg, 76 Fayetteville, Rocky Mount Wilson at 78 degrees. If you're going to be heading downtown tonight, Red Hat, to see Khaled.
Starting point is 00:28:25 about 90 as you're getting there by the time you head home should fall down to the upper 70s under partly cloudy skies. Up around New York there, the state anyway, and Pennsylvania is going to have showers of thunderstorms. Severe weather possible, Dallas, all the way through the Midwest and Chicago get some rain as well. So far this morning we've been doing pretty good, but we're already seeing delays there in Chicago with some of those thunderstorms. Got your 7-day coming up in a few minutes, Michael. Steve, thanks. In Johnson County, the town of Benson has named an interim town manager, Hannah O'Quinn is taking the position.
Starting point is 00:28:56 He's currently Benson's planning director. O'Quinn will carry on the duties of town managers, leader's search for a permanent manager. Benson's former town manager, Dane Rydell, resigned last month after recordings emerged on social media that allegedly captured him using profanity and making derogatory comments about town commissioners. The assistant town manager also resigned.
Starting point is 00:29:15 This is all playing out as Benson is navigating financial challenges. The Raleigh Convention Center could be getting a new name soon. The city says it's exploring the possibility of naming it the Atlantic Union Bank Convention Center. In exchange for those naming rights, Atlantic Union Bank would pay Raleigh an annual fee. The first annual fee would be $5 to $25,000 and increased by 2% each year over the 15-year agreement.
Starting point is 00:29:39 A public hearing on proposed naming rights deal later this month on June 16th at 1 o'clock during the City Council meeting. And right now, the Cains are in Vegas as they get ready for game three of the Stanley Cup final. And the team's quest for the Cup has more kids wanting to pick up the sport. We'll take a look at the growing popularity of youth hockey right here in the Triangle. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Caniak still buzzing after the team's Thursday night overtime win, but the focus has shifted to tonight's game three as Carolina looks to take the series lead in Las Vegas. The Keynes have made the playoffs eight straight seasons, a run that has coincided with huge growth of the sport right here in the triangle. Chris Derenbocker has been a cane season ticket home. Holder since 1998. Those involvement in the sport hit a new level when his son Jack had requested nearly two decades ago. He started saying, Dad, I want to get into hockey. And candidly, I had no clue how to get my kid into hockey in North Carolina. Ultimately, Jack, at eight years old, joined the local Polarized League and his younger sister, Mary, tagged along. And I started figure skating. And then as I started to skate, I was like, I want to play hockey.
Starting point is 00:30:52 There was only one problem. When Mary started, she had no choice but to play with the boys. At the time, there was no girls program for her age, though that did not derail her passion. And no matter who she played against, her skill shined through. Seeking stronger competition, Mary ultimately played at Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota. Four years ago when we had to make that decision. The great thing is, is I don't think she'd have to go today. I think now the girls' program is really strong. The cane success has played a role.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Registration data from U.S. hockey shows in 2017-18, the last season the canes missed the playoffs. There were 455 girls 18 and younger signed up in North Carolina. This past season, there were 749, a nearly 65% jump, well outpacing overall participation growth. We'll be at our national tournament at the end of the year, and the junior Keynes girls would be there too and we'll be planning them. Mary has found her own path, representing both her hometown and country. In 2024, she's done on the U.S. IAHF under 18 Women's World Championship team, which won gold in Switzerland. Very surreal, something I always dreamed of as when I first started, something I didn't even think was possible. While there's tremendous joy in watching his children's success on the ice, Darren Barker notes another layer that's potentially even more impactful.
Starting point is 00:32:05 It's really nice that they have an example. Girls come up to Mary when Mary's at an event and the Junior Cain's girls are there or the girls are there. They come up and they say, oh, I wanted to meet you or, oh, I've heard about you. season, Mary will be playing for the back-to-back defending national champions Wisconsin. Congratulations to her and all our success. Certainly we'll be tracking right here from Raleigh. Meanwhile, Wake County Manager David Ellis is getting in on the Cain's fever. He posted a video with the Cain Evels challenging the Clark County manager in Nevada to a friendly wager, something folks in Vegas are quite familiar with. Take a look. The nights are going down, baby, and my buddy over here, David has something for you, Clark County.
Starting point is 00:32:49 Go for it, David, Clark County. When a hurricane. win the championship, we're going to send you this beautiful red cape and you can wear it to your next county commissioner meeting. And remember, everybody looks good in red. Steve, I think we need the cane evil outfit for our next show here, really jazzed up. Cains take on the Golden Knights tonight in Las Vegas. Game three airs right here on ABC 11 at 8 o'clock. We know there are so many watch parties throughout the triangle tonight cheering on the canes wanting to see us take that 2-1 series lead. What can they expect if they are outside trying to breathe these conditions?
Starting point is 00:33:24 The evening is going to be pretty nice, actually. Temperatures will cool down by then, and the humidity is not too bad, but a hot day for sure. Taking a live look right now. And to Durham, you can see it looks pretty good there. We got some passing high clouds around. We do anticipate seeing more of those high clouds who are going through the day today. Sizzling this weekend, though, near 100 tomorrow. That's the hottest day.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Still hot on Monday, likely in the mid-90s, and most of us will stay dry. There could be an isolated shower. thunderstorm in the sand hills near a front. I'll show you that coming up. But unlikely most of us are going to get rain. Maybe hardly any of us will get rain. And little to no relief. More 90s as we head into next week.
Starting point is 00:34:01 Now, if you take a look at how many days we've hit 90s so far this year, all the way through June 6, we've done it 12 times. Take a look at some of the years in the last decade. None of them around 12. So I don't know if this is a trend, but if you look forward now, look how many 90s are coming our way. Out of the next 10 days, well, we'll probably have a little. least nine of them and Tuesdays knocking on the door of 90s so a lot of heat for sure that'll be with us high clouds are streaming in right now we'll see that as we go through a good part of the day today release Thursday and Friday with higher
Starting point is 00:34:32 moisture content maybe we'll get some pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons but even still that's not in the likely category we need it look how far below full pool Falls Lake is it's been since 2011 we've been this low it's not a record that's back to 2007 and 2008 when it was nearly nine feet below full pool. Those pools will be busy today. Numbers in the 90s, UV index way up there. And of course, we'll have that deck of some high level clouds streaming on through. And again, this is basically filtered sunshine. But still, it might take the edge off just a little bit. And then partly cloudy skies as we get into the evening hours. Right now, we're seeing some of those high clouds in 76 degrees. Doe point at 59. Again, for us, that's not bad for June at all.
Starting point is 00:35:17 considering typically our dew points are going to be closer to 70. A southwest breeze about 12 miles there. That feels pretty good. 79, Roxborough, 77 into Clinton and Rocky Mount Wilson at 78 degrees. Heading out to the Bulls game overall looks pretty good. It'll be hot. Boy, Charlotte's pretty good. They haven't lost since they've been in town.
Starting point is 00:35:36 90 degrees as you're walking in. About 78 by the time you head home later in the evening. That front's going to settle to our south. The best opportunity for a shower storm will be near the front. Most of us will miss out. Still hot in the mid-90s. A little cooler on Tuesday. I stress a little. Be near 90. That's still above average. And then we'll start to see more low-level moisture and more heat. We'll build later in the week. Beaches today will be pretty popular and tomorrow. The rib-current danger is low-to-moderate, especially out there on the Crystal Coast. Low to mid-90s today with some passing high clouds. Tonight, low temperatures will be in the mid-to-oper 60s. So it's a warm overnight and a hot one tomorrow, flirting. Flirting. with a record at 90 degrees. 95 Monday, the better chance at a shower storm is probably to our south. I think Thursday and Friday, isolated storms with increased humidity, the numbers will be in the 90s, but the feels like temperature could actually be closer to 100. We'll be back right after this.
Starting point is 00:36:37 The 33rd annual race to a race MS gala brought up big names last night to help fund the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis. Abigail Volez has more on the star-studded event from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. no shortage of star power on this orange carpet. Actors, athletes, some of the biggest names in Disney. But the real headliner is the research on how to one day and MS for good. This red carpet isn't just about who's arriving. It's about what they're showing up for. Somebody in my family, my sister-in-law, a very recent diagnosis.
Starting point is 00:37:09 I was so relieved to hear that it's very treatable, and it's because of events like this, that it is so treatable. The 33rd annual Race to Erase MS gala bringing together celebrities, advocates and people living with multiple sclerosis, all with the same goal. Raising so much awareness and money for a very noble and worthy cause. Multiple sclerosis attacks the central nervous system and affects nearly one million Americans, including Race to Erase MS founder Nancy Davis. When I was first diagnosed, it was terrifying.
Starting point is 00:37:37 There was no, no cause, no cure, no drugs on the market, and very little hope that there ever would be anything. Since 1993, race to erase MS has raised more than $58 million, helping fund more. than two dozen FDA-approved therapies. More money we raise, the more studies we can find, and the more likely are going to find more of a cure. So we do this every year because we have to. Among those honored Friday night, we are in a race to race MS, and we're going to get there. Disney Entertainment Television Executive Naomi Bulchnikov-Paul.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Of course, any time that somebody gives you life-changing news like that, it is incredibly difficult. She was diagnosed with MS herself and received the organization's medal. of hope for helping change the conversation around the disease. What it means for me to support someone like Naomi and a cause like this is that there's an opportunity for people to rally around each other and show that resiliency and tenacity mean everything. While the night included fashion, dinner, and a star-studded guest list, the focus never
Starting point is 00:38:39 straight far from the cause. We hope we raise all of us a lot of money and a lot of awareness. In Century City, Abigail Veles, ABC 7, eyewitness news. Great story. Listen, if you're heading out today, hot, even hotter tomorrow, not terribly humid. We can't rule out an isolated storm on Monday, but that's to our south. Really, it's going to be more 90s next week, more humid too. So the next time we do a little tailgating for the canes, it's going to feel a lot different. I know we have a big show coming up tonight. Trayvon Kate in Las Vegas.
Starting point is 00:39:11 I feel confident about game three. I've been at those watch parties at more square. It's a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. Yeah, all right. We got the second hour of Good Morning America coming up next from the eyewitness news I'm Michael Perchick for Steve Stewart and the entire eyewitness news team. Thanks for watching.
