Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Good morning, Carolina. I'm Bianca Holman. It's Saturday, March 21st this morning on eyewitness news.
A 15-year-old dies after a shooting and rawly reaction from the father as police investigates.
The state of Wake County Schools, the superintendent, delivers his address as the district
face his tough budget cuts, what he has to say about the wins and challenges ahead.
Duke, they're headed to the second round of the NCAA tournament today.
It's all right here on eyewitness news this morning.
Let's go ahead and take a look at the Raleigh Skyline right now at 9 o'clock.
Hopefully you are up and out the bed.
If you're still laying in bed, get up.
Enjoy the day.
Yes.
I know, you know, this is a day lots of people sleep in.
Oh, yeah.
This is the day you want to get outside.
It's really nice.
It's already mild and temperatures continue to warm up.
So today's pretty warm.
Tomorrow we can use the H word.
Okay.
I think we can call it hot.
Absolutely.
We're going to be flirting with 90 degrees tomorrow.
Downtown looks pretty good.
Some clouds off in the distance are starting to move in now.
We'll see more of those clouds as we go throughout the day.
But despite that, I expect to have temperatures in the lower 80s, well above the average of 65.
Yesterday we had 75 degrees.
89, the record, I think that's safe.
And you see the deficit there, about an inch and a half.
Yeah, that's kind of what most of our months have looked like in the last six months.
months with the exception of last month where we had a tiny little surplus. We don't have a lot of rain in the forecast anytime soon. So if the car's a little dirty, you want to get a clean. It's a good day to do that with temperatures climbing to those 80s. If you're like me, you like to wash the car yourself, perfect with the cloud cover. You can take your time out there for today. And notice those clouds streaming in from the north and the west as we go throughout the day today. So at times, it'll be mostly cloudy. And that likely stays with us through the early evening. And then later on, we'll probably clear out again for tonight.
27 into North Hills right now with the passing clouds and a southwest breeze.
Widespread 50s will look at Rocksboro up to 63 degrees right now.
Pretty rare to have Roxborough be in the warmest spot.
And that's the case this morning.
Really nice evening.
Fire the grill up, take a walk around the neighborhood.
Look at these pleasant temperatures by 8 o'clock still holding on to a 70.
Well, those temperatures, bit of a roller coaster again next week.
More on that coming up in a few minutes.
Bianca.
All right, Steve, thank you.
Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that left a 15-year-old
dead. The shooting happened just off Sunny Brook Road. Not far from Coastal Credit Union Music
Park at Walnut Creek. Jimmy Sprice shares reaction from one neighbor about this incident.
It was so shocking. Kid and get shot. I said, oh. Ozzie Abrams is in disbelief.
His 15-year-old neighbor was shot and killed inside a home on Springshire Court.
On his own house, yeah, at his own house. At his own house. At his own house.
Kota Saga became the backdrop of an hour's long investigation.
And it was so devastating, you know, I feel so, you know,
guys that is a nice kid.
It's only a couple of days ago he come and say,
Azzie, you got some snacks.
Community advocate Diana Powell getting a call,
she always dreads.
When I get the call and I hear the cries on the other end of the phone,
it breaks my heart.
Powell says more children are dying and the suspects are also
are also kids.
It's easy to go in your house, close your blinds and your doors and say that's not my problem
until it becomes your problem. It is our problem. And I will say it with my chest.
Powell has continued to say we need more effective resources for the young people.
Resources are there, right? They're just not getting to where they need to get to for it to be
effective, right? We have resources. There is funding there, but it's not getting to where
it needs to get to.
A community-wide effort will be the change to move the needle and get kids the help they need and safety they require.
Until then, those who knew Kaden are processing an unimaginable loss tonight.
Too soon.
And that was our Jimmy's price reporting there.
Kaden's father said RPD has two kids in custody who may be connected to this shooting investigation.
The FBI has arrested a 19-year-old man from Raleigh, who the agency says was upset.
with mass shooters. The FBI says Eric Byrd also allegedly threatening to become one himself
in messages posted on social media. Authorities say he also posted photos of himself holding guns
with disturbing racist, homophobic, and pro-Nazi comments. Bird was detained on March 9th during
an involuntary commitment request after META flagged the feds about concerning posts. On Thursday,
the feds charged him with communicating a threat. Let's go to Wake County now with the
superintendent delivered his state of the school's address. He highlighted recent wins and the
challenges ahead. Dr. Robert Taylor pointed to strong academic results, including a graduation
of nearly graduation rate of nearly 90 percent and more than half schools, half of the schools
in the district earning an A or better grades. He also acknowledged major hurdles, including
age and school buildings, budget uncertainty and concerns over special education funding.
The district is still waiting on state lawmakers to pass a budget, leaving next year's funding
decisions up in the air. We're at a point to where we've got to address some serious deferred
maintenance in those buildings and so that's what we want to be able to focus what we hope
will be a bond that will be on the November ballot. The proposed district budget has sparked
teacher protests including concerns about potential cuts to special education services.
Dr. Taylor says passing a state budget is critical not just for Wake County but for school
districts all across North Carolina. In Durham, more than 200 school bus.
drivers were not fully paid yesterday.
The district says it was an error in the finance department, and the drivers should have
their money by Monday.
The superintendent also apologized to the bus drivers.
To your voice, your vote state Senate leader, Phil Berger requesting a hand recount as he
continues to trail Sam Page in the Republican primary election.
Berger's spokesperson releasing this statement arguing previous recounts were treated differently
in Guilford and Rockingham counties, and that's not fair to voters.
The Page campaign has responded saying Phil Berger is once again asking for special treatment and trying to change the rules after he lost.
Berger doesn't get to rewrite it because he doesn't like the outcome.
A mass of woods fire is now contained in Moore County.
The techniques fire crews use to get the flames under control.
After devastating floods, Hawaii braces for more dangerous weather when another storm is expected to hit the region.
But first, good morning, Steve.
Hey, good morning, Bianca. Good morning, everybody.
Outside, we got some clouds moving in.
Temperature is not bad in the 50s and even 60s up in Roxburgh.
Here comes some 80s up for today.
We'll see a lot of clouds around, but a nice warm day and even warmer tomorrow.
Details after the break.
This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11. I Witness News.
Welcome back, everybody, and happy Saturday.
We're looking good today.
We'll be near 80 up in Roxborough, low 80s in the triangle, and even mid 80s down in the sand dills.
Despite the clouds coming in today, going to be.
quite warm and even warmer for tomorrow by the way. There you see the clouds kind of streaming in from the north and west and we'll have those a good part of the day today. Matter of fact, at times it'll be cloudy, but not bad if you have some yard work you need to get done. We'll climb to those lower 80s and we could have overcast skies for a time and then we'll get some clearing as we get later on for tonight. 57 right now with some clouds moving in a light southwest breeze, a good nine degrees warmer than yesterday with widespread 50s, although Roxburgh, the warm spot at 63 degrees.
right now. Head now for this evening to the Lenovo Center to the R&B Lovers Tour, 75 before and about 64 degrees when you head home. No jackets required. And a good travel day weather wise across the country. A couple spotty showers in Chicago. Hot in Dallas and Denver and L.A. about 82 degrees. So far this morning, the major hubs, no weather delays. Got you 7.A. coming up in a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, we'll check it with you in a minute. Well, now to just one local team left dancing in the men's NC.
OLA tournament, Duke surviving a close call while UNC, they're out of there.
The top-seeded Blue Devils will look to secure a spot in the Sweet 16 when it faces TCU tonight in Greenville, South Carolina.
Tip-off begins by 15.
Now to the Duke women's team starting off strong, knocking off the College of Charleston, 81-64 at Cameron Endoor Stadium.
The third-seated Blue Devils used a 28-4 run in the first half to pull away, fresh off an ACC championship.
Duke now has their eyes set on returning to the final four.
the first time in 20 years. Duke now plays six-seated Baylor on Sunday.
To the quarter, Grant Doe there defensively was Kalyn Reed, so she drives, scores, and it's foul.
Okay, ladies, Carolina beat 13 seed Western Illinois. The Tar Hills put together a defense
master class, which allowed them to dominate and move on to the second round.
And NC State Women's, a number seven seat took a win last night over 10 seed, Tennessee, 76, 61 on the road in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Wolfpack Women's now take on Michigan, a two seat on Sunday.
Well, this morning, all new North Carolina made straight ahead.
We'll take a look at the company started by two NC State students and the products you can find at shops all across the triangle.
Where are my gloves?
Come on, heat.
Winter is hard, but your groceries don't have to be.
This winter, stay warm.
Tap the banner to order your groceries online at voila.ca.
Enjoy in-store prices without leaving your home.
You'll find the same regular prices online as in-store.
Many promotions are available both in-store and online, though some may vary.
We are back now.
It is 915 on this Saturday morning.
A massive woods fire that burned dozens of acres in Moore County is now 100% contained.
Chopper 11 was over the scene yesterday after noon.
as crews from several different agencies responded.
We know at least one structure was damaged.
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the fire put off a lot of smoke.
Many people could smell it overnight and across the triangle.
So the fire chief says they were able to use a technique called back burning to help minimize the spread of that fire.
A dangerous situation unfolding north of Honolulu, Hawaii, rising floodwater, surging behind the 120-year-old dam,
now pushing it towards a possible failure.
Thousands living downstream told to leave immediately.
The Hawaii National Guard has been activated
and the governor is warning residents to get out now.

now. The dam, which has been safe, was getting close to 85 feet. That's why we sounded the
alarms and made sure people could get over out of harm's way. Relentless rain continues to pound
the islands with more on the way through the weekend. Raising the risk for even more flooding
already seems like these in the rain and wind. This is nuts, bro. Oh my God, it's rushing so
What appears to be the roof of a home on a road and nearby flooded streets and front yards?
Government leave family?
The heaviest rain is expected through Saturday with the big island getting the worst of it.
Wind gusts of 45 miles an hour are possible.
The governor ordering all state departments closed and state workers not responding to the emergency to go home.
Locals calling this storm Kona 2.0.
the second so-called Kona Lo to hit the area.
A Kona Lo is a subtropical cyclone that can cause extremely heavy rain like Hawaii has seen
for the past week.
I've mobilized even more military reserves, and we have the troops coming in from Schofield
to help.
The Coast Guard will be out there to do search and rescue if, God forbid, any of our loved ones
have been washed away with housing.
Residents in impacted areas urged to gather their families and head to shelters now,
parts of Oahu are without power.
Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York.
All right, be sure to check on family and friends there.
Switching gears to here back at home.
Let's take a live look outside.
Here's a look of downtown Raleigh, Parapindo SkyCam at 301 Hillsboro Street.
Again, 50 degrees out there right now.
It's feeling good already.
It's actually warmer.
I think it's like 57 already.
Okay.
Ticking on up.
Going up quick.
Yeah, it's going to be a really nice day to get out.
I hope everyone enjoys it.
Tomorrow we could actually say it's hot.
We're going to be flirting with 90 degrees tomorrow.
Feeling like June for sure this weekend.
So make some plans and get out if you can.
We'll cool down on Monday briefly.
Well, it's a late Monday into Tuesday as some cooler air comes in.
And then mid to late week, we're right back to the 70s again.
So we're going to see just a little short dip in the temperature.
There's Tuesday.
Then we go right back later on the week.
And then next weekend we'll see another dip.
Kind of the up and down that you expect this time of year.
Best rain chance is likely Friday was the front.
settles in from the north. Sometimes these are moisture starves, so we'll keep it in a lower chance category for now.
Out and about, maybe just a walk around the lake today, it's going to be fantastic as those numbers climbed to the low 80s.
Yeah, there'll be a lot of clouds spilling in from the north and west as we go throughout the day today.
But still going to be quite warm. You can see predictors showing all those clouds around.
So at times could be completely overcast and then those clouds will break as we get later into the evening.
Right now we're looking pretty good with some passing clouds in 57, a light breeze at about.
6 miles an hour. Most of us are in those mid-50s, although Roxburgh at 63 degrees, 61 into southern pines, and Goldsboro currently at 58 degrees.
Heading out this evening, maybe going to the D-PAC tonight to see stereophonics, 75 when you walk in.
Really no jackets required when you head home still in the mid-60s under fair skies at that time.
And look at tomorrow's numbers just up there in those high 80s, flirting with 90 degrees.
Could be talking about a record high at RDU. The records at 89, so really close to that.
Might see an isolated shower with thunderstorm on Monday as that front comes in.
Now, the timing is key. If it's a little faster, we might not make it to 80.
I do anticipate, though, temperatures falling after, say, three in the afternoon as that cooler air starts to settle in.
The coolest day will be on Tuesday in the high 50s.
We just barely tap into the cooler air.
The colder air stays up to the north.
But again, we are anticipating seeing some cooler numbers for sure.
Meantime, we're heading up to the mountains.
both days look good. Tomorrow's going to be in the 80s quite warm there as well. Beaches looking good both days as well if you want to get away or just stay here. We're going to be warm as well. Highs will be in the 80s for today. Upper 70s in our northern counties. Again, we're seeing more and more clouds spilling in. And then tonight just a few clouds left over and low temperatures likely in the 50s where you see the normal lows at 41. So we'll call it a mile night and a hot day tomorrow. We're going to be flirting with 90 degrees.
Plenty of sunshine around maybe a few early morning clouds.
A stray storm on Monday that front moves in.
I still think we touch 80 degrees.
Temperature could fall later in the afternoon.
The cool days on Tuesday, more seasonable on Wednesday despite the increased clouds.
Thursday, 75, maybe we'll squeeze out a shower, thunderstorm around isolated on Friday.
But then next weekend, we're back down to the lower 60s.
So a big change from the 80s this weekend.
All right.
Get out and enjoy.
Take the kids to the park.
Get outdoors. Straight ahead, what we're learning about the opening of North Carolina's first buckies.
Well, as spring break is here, and you're about to make some flights, next time you're going to the
RDU airport, keep your eyes peeled, you'll start noticing some unique designs, reference cities like Durham
and Raleigh. As Amber Repenton reports in North Carolina made this week, the company behind them
was actually started by two NC State students.
It's got a sentimental. Brooks Hall on NC State's campus is a special.
place for business co-founders and alumni Megan Fowler and Amanda
Pearl Swig. A majority of our classes junior and senior year when we started this were
happening in Brooks Hall which is right over there. The two friends launched
Brooks Designs Coe named after the NC State Campus Building where it all
began. We were walking through names and we're like why not just call it Brooks. So
it became Brooks Designs. Ten years ago Amanda was working part-time at Deco in
downtown Raleigh when the owner encouraged her to try entrepreneurship.
There was not a lot of Raleigh merchandise back then, especially in the store itself.
And being in the graphic design program here, we saw that as an opportunity.
She asked Megan if she'd be interested in creating Raleigh-themed designs and the idea stuck.
To kind of test out what we had been learning and stickers were cheap for college students.
Today, Brooks Designs creates unique stickers featuring local cities and has expanded into
T-shirts, including custom design sold at Root and Branch at RDU Airport.
The T-shirts, the airports wanted specifically.
They're Raleigh and Durham Skylines.
We wanted to be hands-on and involved with the making of everything, the colors, watches,
all of it.
We use Ardbark screen printing, which they're local as well, downtown.
Another big milestone came when their work made it to the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree.
The Christmas tree in Washington, D.C. was from North Carolina in 2022.
We actually had someone from the Department of Agriculture reach out to us and ask if they
could use our designs as ornaments on the tree. So that was very cool as well. In honor representing
North Carolina on the national stage from the capital city that's helped their business grow.
People are super willing to help meet you where you are, what you need. I feel like we did build
like a little community with all the other artists who'd show up to all their markets, which is
really cool. And it's presented a lot of cool opportunities like this. From a college campus to designs
now seen across the triangle and even the nation's capital, proudly NC made. You can see,
find Brooks Designs Co's items at Root and Branch at RDU Airport and Deco in downtown Raleigh.
And the two co-founders say you can also reach out to them for specific projects you may have in mind.
I'm Amber Repenta, ABC 11, IWitness News.
All right, Amber, thank you.
The billboards are up and now there's a timeline for North Carolina's first Buckees.
According to the company, the Buckees along I-40 and Mebben is expected to open.
In the fourth quarter of 2027, site work began in late 2025, and the location is planned to feature
120 gas pumps and a massive convenience store. The NC Department of Transportation is also making
traffic improvements in the area near the site, with Buckees helping to cover some of those costs.
Public's expanding here in the triangle, the grocery store chain says they are going to open a new
location in Durham this spring. It's going to be located on Guest Road off a lot of road. The grand
opening is set for Saturday, April 11th at 7 a.m. It's going to be the second public's in Durham.
There's one currently located on Yenis Road. Reimagining the sign.
of the former Northgate Mall in Durham.
Target expected to anchor a new development at the property that's been empty for some years now.
The community is reacting to the big news.
Plus, the developer looking to bring Waymo's autonomous rides hailing service to Rale.
Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Okay, here goes a live look.
Of course, our skylines this morning.
It is 9.30.
Good morning, Carolina.
It's Saturday.
March 21st, I'm Bianca Home,
and you're watching eyewitness news
now on ABC 11 and wherever you stream.
The top stories in all the day's news
is just ahead, but first let's go ahead
and check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart
as we get our day started.
Some folks already outseasoned the day there up in Adams.
Enjoy the walk.
It's going to be fantastic.
Get things.
done around the house and tomorrow we can actually call it hot. I mean, we're going to be flirting with a record high tomorrow.
Would not be shocked at all if we touch 90 degrees for tomorrow. Looking good. Now you see the high clouds are
drifting in from the north and west and we're going to get more of those clouds as to go through the day.
At times it could be overcast, but despite that, I anticipate getting to some low 80s later this afternoon.
Yesterday we hit 75. The normal's at 65. 89 as a record, not going to get there today. Again, maybe tomorrow.
And there's that deficit about an inch and a half, really starting to look like most of the months in the last six with the exception of February where we had a tiny little surplus.
So we need to get some more good soaking rains and that's not in the card.
So if the car's a bit dirty, don't worry about driving through puddles.
Get a wash today if you want to as we climb to those 80s.
And notice we're going to get plenty of clouds streaming in from the north and the west.
A predictor showing that as well as we go through the afternoon at times it'll be overcast.
If you like to wash your car like I do by yourself, get out.
there. It's nice to have the cloud cover so you can take your time. All right now we're
looking pretty good at 57 degrees at North Hills with the clouds and a southwest breeze at about
six miles an hour. Roxburgh the warm spot 64 now 61 southern pines and Clinton currently at 58
degrees. Heading out this evening you just want to take a walk or enjoy it, fire the grill up. Look
how pleasant these temperatures are. Even at 8 o'clock in the evening we're holding on to a 70 degree
reading. Now next week the roller coaster with temperatures can
continues just not as drastic with the ups and downs. We'll talk more about that in a few minutes, Bianca.
All right, Steve, thank you. Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that left a 15-year-old dead.
Police say they now have another juvenile in custody. So it's a story that we covered all day on Friday.
Chopper 11 over the scene there at 1,400 block of Springshower Court near Sunnybrook Road where the investigation played out.
Police say the child was shot and taken into the hospital where he later died.
The teen's father confirmed with eyewitness news by phone that his son,
was dead. He identified the 15-year-old as Caden, Alston Arnold. Neighbors say he was a great kid.
And it was so devastating, you know, I feel so, you know, because he's a nice kid.
It's only a couple of days ago he come and say, Ozzie, you got some snacks.
It's easy to go in your house, close your blinds and your doors and say that's not my problem until it becomes your problem.
It is our problem. And I will say it with my chest.
And if you have any information about this investigation called,
Ronnie PD. We've got an update on an investigation in Garner that started at a local church.
Police say new evidence has led to serious additional charges.
Garner police say Christopher McMullen is now facing 15 counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
The department says the charges stemmed from a February 27th incident at Capitol Church,
where McMullen was originally charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
Investigators say, specially trained detectives found illegal material during a follow-up examination of evidence.
Police say it remains an active investigation but say there's no ongoing threat to the public.
We've got an update to a deadly house party shooting in Fayetteville.
The juvenile suspect is being charged as an adult in this crime.
According to court records, 17-year-old Justice Miller is facing first-degree murder charges for killing 18-year-old Harrison Anderson.
Investigators say the shooting happened Saturday night at a teen house party where Anderson had.
gone with a friend while on spring break.
Authorities say Anderson tried to break up a verbal fight between Miller and another man,
and they say Miller hit him with the pistol and shot him twice.
He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Several hours later, Miller is being held without bond.
Now to the big news surrounding the side of the former Northgate Mall in Durham,
Target set to anchor the new development.
Akila Davis shares reaction from neighbors living nearby.
It would be nice for another Shepard Center come.
Big time.
Melinda Wilkins has lived here across Guest Road and within steps of Northgate Mall for 13 years.
She remembers when the now vacant property was once a popular shopping hub in Durham's Trinity
Park community.
Oh, my God.
It was like a dream come true for me and my little girl because she was named Sears Baby
because we over there all the time.
Northgate Mall was built in 1960, but in 2020 was shut down officially.
At the time, the owners cited extreme financial difficulties due to the COVID-19.
pandemic, leaving generations of shoppers like Melinda and her neighbors shocked.
When the mall level, it was just a big total disappointment.
In November of last year, the mall's owners, Northwood investors announced it would sell
a third of the property to Regency Centers with plans for six commercial buildings and retail
space.
The site would also be rebranded as LRB Square.
As part of this new development, ABC 11 confirmed that retail giant Target is planning to
open a new location as an anchor store for the project.
saying it's excited to bring easy, affordable, and convenient shopping experiences to guests in Durham.
I'm happy about that because I like talking.
Target would be fine, but I don't think they'll last very long.
John Beaker works in real estate and says he's watched the neighborhood change over the years.
He admits business is needed in this community.
I'd love to see something higher in coming to this area.
It would do well.
But as long as the crime is the way it is in this area,
I don't think anybody's going to be able to make it for very long.
And that was our Akela Davis reporting.
Now, there's no timeline on how soon Target could be moving in.
We reached out to Regency Centers and are waiting to hear back.
In Wake County, county, county commissioners have approved plans to replace and modernize EMS Station 5.
The station in North Raleigh is known as many city station.
It's been in service since 1989, and it measures just over 2,000 square feet with two vehicle bays that take up more than half the space.
The city releasing this rendering of the new station.
It'll be more than double the size of the current station.
It'll have an additional vehicle bay, which will enable the station to respond efficiently
to increase call volumes.
Construction is expected to begin this fall and be completed by late 2027.
And by early 2028, EMS units are expected to start using that station.
We are working to learn more about the potential plans to bring Waymo to Raleigh.
That's those self-driving vehicles you may have seen before in bigger cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
According to the Triangle Business Journal, Capital City Urban Development is moving forward with plans to construct an underground parking facility that would use automated parking equipment.
The parking facility will be the second phase of the Gateway District on Kenley Street that's off Salisbury Street just south of downtown.
The TBJ reports, while the automated parking facility will work for any car, developers envision a future where self-driving vehicles likely Waymo can come to Raleigh.
Waymo currently operates in 10 cities and has plans for interest.
entering 21 more cities.
Raleigh is not on that list, but Charlotte is.
Power on wheels, straight ahead.
We'll introduce you to an all-women roller derby team
in Fayetteville where they're challenging stereotypes
while building community.
And get ready to party like is 2006.
The Raleigh Times Bar turning back the clock
as the restaurant celebrates 20 years in business.
Details on special pricing happening next week.
And we'd love that pricing, Steve,
to also apply to gas.
Absolutely.
Yeah, we love that.
Hey outside right now we're looking pretty good.
Got some clouds drifting in.
Look at the temperatures in the 50s and there's 60.
Rocksboro's over 60.
And here come the numbers in the 80s.
And it gets even warmer tomorrow.
All the details after the break.
This is first alert weather from ABC 11.
I witness news.
Good morning, everybody.
I mean, nice one today.
A lot of clouds around.
But despite that, temperatures are going to be up there near 80 in Roxburgh,
low 80s triangle and maybe mid 80s down in the sand hills today.
Well above average.
gets even warmer tomorrow. You see the clouds drifting in from the north and west. We're going to have these as we go throughout the day. At times, we'll be completely overcast, but despite that, still quite warm. You want to get some of the yard work done. It's a good day for it. We'll get to those 80s and notice the cloud cover as we go throughout the afternoon hours. And then we'll start to cool down once we get early into the evening hours. 57 into North Hills now, nine degrees warmer than this time. Yesterday with a light breeze coming in from the west right now with 61 Oxford, 64 up in Rock.
The warm spot, 61 Smithfield and Clinton currently at 61 degrees.
Evening planter for heading out to Lenovo Center tonight.
The R&B lovers tours, 75 when you walk in.
No jackets required will still be in the 60s when you head home.
Travel for today pretty good, not bad.

We are local news.
ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
945 on this Saturday morning.
March is Women's History Month and is a time to celebrate women who are breaking barriers
in the sport of roller derby, strength, speed, and ads.
attitude are part of the game. IWitness News took a spin in Fayetteville with some fearless women who are doing what they can to own the track.
ABC 11's Penelopee Lopez has a story.
Roller Derby is fast and full contact.
But for these women, it's more than a game.
It's invigorating. It's empowering to be a woman that can play in a sport that not a lot of people know about.
And it's tough. And this is my first
sport that I've really ever played. I always did non-contact sports.
Here at the Crown Complex is where Fayetteville's Roller Derby team hones their skills.
Founded 13 years ago, it's where strength and sisterhood collide.
I had been watching Fayetteville Roller Derby since I was really little.
I won tickets, free tickets to their game a really long time ago.
I was obsessed ever since then.
I go by a Fallout Babe at Derby.
My Roller Derby name is Poundkeek.
And my Derby name is Corporal Killa.
For newcomers like Ashley Sharp, it's a place to grow on and off the track.
I actually live in Wilmington, North Carolina.
So it's a far drive there because there's no roller derby in Wilmington.
Starting out so far, I've learned different stops, like plows stops, tea stops, doing bubbles,
just the basics.
That's where I'm out right now.
The rules are simple.
Four blockers from each team form a pack.
They block opponents and help their jammers score.
About a week ago, I hit 16 years of doing derby minus two kids.
COVID in a broken leg. Veterans Misty Fisher says bombs are built lap after lap. It can be demanding.
We have practice usually two days a week for our all-star team. You have to make 50% attendance
in order to play. These women, moms, veterans and nurses, proof strength comes in many forms.
You know, the hits that we take are powerful. The hits that we're giving are intentional.
We are playing a sport that we know we can get injured in, and we all have insurance for, but we love it.
All right, that was Fenelvie Lopez reporting.
Their first showdown, better known as about hits the track this Saturday today,
March 21st at 5 p.m. The doors open at 4 p.m. All right, she said, we have insurance to take
those hits, Steve. Oh, my gosh. You see them knocking those elbows?
Yeah, that's crazy. Wow.
I'd have a hard time just by myself without falling down. Yeah. It's a great day to get out.
Temperatures are so pleasant out there.
We're going to warm up in a big way as we go out throughout not only today, but tomorrow as well.
Matter of fact, tomorrow really going to get up there.
I'm forecasting 88.
I wouldn't be surprised if we touch 90.
89 is a record high tomorrow.
And by the way, 88, the average we get this usually around June 20th, just to put things in perspective, all right?
Go a little cool down as we get into Tuesday behind Monday's front and then we go right back to the 70s after that as we warm up again.
So can we go up and then down?
for a day and we'll moderate again and then down again as we head into next weekend.
So a touch cooler for sure in the 60s.
Our best chance of rain is maybe Friday and that's just in the chance category as that front
comes in.
It could be moisture star, but we'll see we need some soaking rain, but that's just not in the
cards anytime soon.
A little walk around the lake today, numbers warming up to those 80s.
And keep in mind there'll be plenty of clouds around at that time as well and likely staying
as we go throughout the afternoon and evening.
Our southeastern counties or southwestern counties might get a shower, thunder shower tonight, but most of us will be dry.
Notice a cloud cover, though, through the afternoon. Pretty impressive.
And then we're going to be dealing with some breaks in the clouds.
And it should be a pleasant evening if you have plans on this Saturday night.
57 into North Hills right now.
That's nearly 10 degrees warmer than this time yesterday.
Look at Roxborough at 64.
58 into Fayetteville, 61 into Clinton and Goldsboro currently at 59 degrees.
Head now this evening, maybe going to the D-PAC to see.
stereophonics, 75 when you walk in. Show times at 7.30 when you head home, still pretty darn
mile with temperatures in the mid-60s. Now look at tomorrow's numbers. I mean, we're up there
flirting with 90 degrees. Even our northern counties will be on those high 80s and lots of sunshine,
really going to feel like a June day. Front moves through. Now, there could be a shower
thunderstorm. The best bed is going to be down east, and it's going to be isolated in nature.
And the timing of the front is key. If it's a little quicker, maybe we don't get to that.
at 80. Regardless, I think Thames could fall later in the day. Maybe we'll reach that high at around two in the afternoon. And then the numbers falling down to the mid-70s by four or five o'clock. Front continues to settle in. High pressure to the north will be cooler. That's our coolest day of the week as we tap into that chilly air. The coldest is going to be well off to the north. Up in the mountains this weekend looking pretty good. Tomorrow in the 80s, Asheville, Bryson City, chimney rock. And the beaches, both days are looking fantastic if you want to get away.
just stay here. It's going to be warm too. Despite the clouds we're in the 80s and most spots,
tonight we'll have low temperatures in the 50s. Generally fair skies. We'll see some evening clouds,
but we'll call it partly cloudy overnight. And then tomorrow in the first alert seven day near 90 degrees.
Monday's still 80. There'll be a front that comes in, maybe an isolated storm later on.
A little cooler on Tuesday and then we warm right back up. And here come the 70s for Thursday and Friday.
All right, Steve, thank you. Duke medical students celebrate match day.
The future generation of doctors share excitement.
Look at all that, smiles and cheers over what awaits them after med school.
We'll take a look at the special ceremony.
Scammers are going after your tax refund.
You have less than a month to file your taxes and troubleshooter Diane Wilson explains how to protect your money.
The countdown is on the tax day Wednesday, April 15th.
If you haven't filed your taxes yet.
So the biggest things is people posing as tax agents and saying I can help you and I can get you an incredible
return, that's a huge red flag. So if anybody hasn't even looked at any of your documents and
just saying like, oh, you can get a great return. Don't even worry about it.
Alyssa Parker with a better business bureau of Eastern Carolina say that's why you need to be
involved and take a look at what's being filed on your behalf and where your refund is going.
Make sure that your return is coming to you. If they say it is going to them, we really urge
you to proceed with caution, maybe take a step back and see if this is someone you actually
want to work with. The IRS issued their top dirty dozen scams for the U.S.S. issued their top dirty dozen
scams for the year and the number one scam impersonating the IRS.
Don't get tricked by AI generated emails and texts.
Also, don't be fooled by scammers manipulating the caller ID to make it appear the IRS is calling.
If you do get contact by the IRS and you're a little nervous, you're not sure if it's real or not,
you can contact them directly and that way you can handle any sort of situation or answer any
questions that they may have.
Go directly to the official website, IRS.gov, for help.
And that was our Diane Wilson reporting there.
Now to some medical school students around the country,
finding out where they're going to work in residency.
All right. What an exciting day.
As 140 fourth-year medical students at Duke University School of Medicine
opened their envelopes and learn where they're going to spend the next few years' training.
I'm feeling amazing.
This is the day I've been waiting for since the beginning of medical school.
And even before now it's here.
Duke medical students are headed to some.
some of the nation's most prestigious residency programs with 36 matching to
resigning spots right at Duke Health. Yeah, we've got lots of people who meet
their health and so med students over at UNC also learned their matches
yesterday. So congrats to them. Never knew that. I think that that's kind of cool.
Exactly because they don't always get the way they want to go. So you can tell
yeah, she got to where she sure did she's like won the lottery.
All right. Congratulations. All right. One more final look at the weather. All right.
Great today. A lot of clouds but still
80s and tomorrow the sun's out and look at that we're flirting with 90 degrees.
We'll cool down on Tuesday behind the front and then right back to the 70s Thursday and Friday.
All right. And it's a special day. Happy anniversary. It is 27 year anniversary. Me and Deb.
Yes, they're going to go celebrate. All right. The second hour of Good Morning America is next from the eyewitness News Center.
I'm Biancahoma for Steve Stewart and the entire eyewitness news team.
