Starting point is 00:00:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. I'm Bianca Holman. It's Sunday, March 22nd, breaking this morning on eyewitness news, a Moore County deputy exchanging gunfire with an armed man. The deputy shooting and killing the suspect, the FBI now investigating. And tragedy on the water. A man drowns while fishing at Falls Lake, how he's being remembered by his family. And the war with Iran entering a new phase, we have the latest developments from the Middle East. Let's go ahead and take a live look at the Raleigh skyline here at the 9 o'clock hour, 60 degrees.
Starting point is 00:00:46 It looks so beautiful out. Hey, good morning, Steve. Hey, good morning. It's going to be a warm one today. Good day to get out if you can. Had that little rogue shower earlier and that's dissipated. Pretty much. Still maybe a couple of sprinkles as we get close to downtown.
Starting point is 00:01:00 But again, pretty nice as we get our day started today. It's going to warm quickly though. We're going to get to the high 80s. Could be tying a record at R2 at 89 degrees. In Fayetteville will probably break a record. We're going for 90 down there. Yesterday we got to 80 with all those clouds in the afternoon. We're not going to see that later on for today.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Lots of sunshine anticipated. We have the clouds now. That's that thunderstorm that move from the triad and kind of been fizzling out, but you can see that moved right over us. There's what's left of that heavier shower moved all the way just south of Durham, and there's a little bit of rain still holding on there in parts of Wake County. Don't be surprised if you get that brief little shower for this morning. We're going to climb, though, up to those upper 80s later on today. If you want to get the car wash, good day for that, as we'll have plenty of sunshine
Starting point is 00:01:45 later this afternoon. Right now, we're at 60 with those clouds out there, but it's going to get brighter as we go along in the next couple of hours with a south breeze. right now less than five. 60 in the Durham, 61 in Chapel Hill. Sanford is 62 degrees in Fayetteville, currently at 60. Head now this evening, maybe you just want to fire the grill up. It'll be nice for that. Look at these pleasant temperatures by 8 o'clock. We're still near 80 degrees and then clear in 75 at 10 o'clock in the evening hours. Overall, looking fantastic. This week, we've got some up and down temperatures to talk about. More on that coming up in just a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you. Now to some breaking news this morning. A Moore County Sheriff's
Starting point is 00:02:23 deputy involved in an overnight shooting. So take a look at this footage that we have. Our breaking news crew was there. And this is on Highway 2427, also known as Carthage Street in Cameron. So authorities telling us they received reports of a man firing a gun at cars driving by. But when authorities arrived, they say the suspect began firing his weapon at them. That's when a deputy returned fire, hitting the killing the suspect. The man's identity has not been shared. The FBI is investigating. Also breaking right now, the Raleigh Police. Department investigating an early morning shooting. Officers say it happened at the patio nightclub off Newburn Avenue just before 1.30. We're told two men were shot, rushed to the hospital with
Starting point is 00:03:02 serious injuries, and at this time, no word yet on a suspect. Anyone with any information about this shooting, you're asked to call Raleigh PD. This morning, a Wake County family grieving after a man drowned in Falls Lake. It happened Saturday afternoon near Cheek Road Bridge. I witness news. Learn for family members that were out there. The victim was 30-year-old Pablo Reyes, Pardomo, They say they were fishing along the shore when Pablo fell into the water and never resurfaced. His brothers speaking to our John Dowding after the tragedy. We're just heartbroken because his loss doesn't sit easy with the people he's left behind. We just never imagine that something like this would happen or could have happened.
Starting point is 00:03:40 He was a quiet and humble man. He always got along well with everyone. The brothers tell us that they're raising money to send his body back to Honduras, where his mom, wife and daughters are waiting to say their. final goodbyes. Now to the latest with the war in Iran. The conflict entering a new critical phase, more American ships and U.S. Marines are headed to the Middle East as President Trump weighs his next move. ABC's Patrick Reval from Doha with a new message from one of the U.S. commanders. Whoa!
Starting point is 00:04:13 An Iranian missile slamming into a residential neighborhood in southern Israel. Israeli authorities saying nearly 40 people wounded. And in an attempted show of military strength, strength, Iran reportedly firing two missiles at a U.S.-UK. air base thought to be out of its reach. This is a warning shot. Iran reported to have fired two intermediate range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, the joint American military base in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 2,500 miles from Iran. One of the missiles failed in flight. A U.S. warship also fired an interceptor at the other, sources told the Wall Street Journal.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Reaching the base would mean Iran may possess ballistic. missiles with a much longer range than Tehran has previously acknowledged, although it's unclear how far the missiles traveled. The British government, though not confirming the missiles launch, calling the attack reckless. There are two messages here. The first message is our capabilities are kind of large enough, long enough to reach into Europe even.
Starting point is 00:05:11 But secondly, this is demonstrating that those, as well as the drones and the small attack vessels and the mines are still something that they possess. The US and Israel, meanwhile, launching fresh strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, including the Nutan's enrichment site. Iranian state media saying no leakage of radioactive material was reported. The US Central Command declined to comment on any attack on Nantans, but insisted that the war is making progress.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Iran has lost significant combat capability over the last three weeks. We are taking out thousands of Iranian missiles, advanced attack drones, and all of Iran's navy, which they used to harass international shipping. Thousands of additional U.S. Marines and sailors are headed to the Middle East, including a second Marine expeditionary unit, fueling speculation of a potential ground operation around the Strait of Hormuz. In Iowa today, two U.S. service members killed in Kuwait were laid to rest. Major Jeffrey O'Brien and Sergeant Declan Cody, alongside four others, were killed in a drone attack.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Patrick Rievel, ABC News, Doha, Qatar. All right, Patrick, thank you. North Carolina, Senator Tom Tillis, weighing in on the ongoing. war, expressing his support for President Trump's decisions. He sat down with ABC's John Carl on ABC this week. I don't know what our long-term strategic goals are, but we're going to need to know that. I generally support what the president's doing in Iran, but if we're going to get anything close to the $200 billion supplemental requests, we've got to get 60 votes, and we're going
Starting point is 00:06:46 to have to figure out how to accomplish that. Well, tell us went on to talk about his relationship with President Trump and his decision to retire at the end of this. term. You can watch that full interview later this morning on ABC's this week. Coming up, scaling back flights, the major airline pausing some rounds due to the spike in oil prices. And a rare sight in the sky, a suspected meteor spotted over Texas what the National Weather Service is saying about it. And evacuation orders issued in Hawaii as the island gets hammered by flash flooding. But first, good morning, Steve. Hey, good morning there, Bianca.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Good morning, everyone. Pretty stark to the day. We got some clouds overhead. They're moving on out. Temperatures are near 60 degrees right now in many areas are on our way to the high 80s, maybe flirting with 90. All the details after the break. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11. I witness news. Welcome back to everybody. Going to be a warm one today. We had a thunderstorm early this morning. It's been waning.
Starting point is 00:07:44 It's still a little tiny shower in Wake County. But that's it. As we go throughout today, look at these temperatures in the high 80s to near 90 degrees. A mix of sun and clouds. Got some clouds out there this morning right across Wake County. but it's going to get brighter soon. Up to the north, we've got some rain and snow and maybe some thunderstorm activity.
Starting point is 00:08:01 A couple of strong cells. Get out and take advantage of the day. High 80s, yeah, that's up there, getting on the verge of calling it hot, but humidity won't be terrible. Not going to be like a typical, like a July day where dew points are in the 70s, so we'll feel that bad.
Starting point is 00:08:15 60 in the North Hills right now. That's three degrees warmer than yesterday with a light breeze out there. Wide spread upper 50s and low 60s with southern pines at 63 degrees. And same thing up in Rocksboro. Heading out this evening, maybe going to Lenovo Center, Brandon Laken Town, mid-80s when you walk in, and mid-70s by the time you're heading home. No jackets required.
Starting point is 00:08:35 The northeast will have rain and some snow in New England. Chicago gets showers. And, of course, in this area here, we have to watch out for some stronger thunderstorms if you're traveling to say Pittsburgh might have a delay later on today. But so far, all the major hubs looking good. Got you 7.8 in a few minutes, Bianca. Steve, thank you. Right now, thousands of people on Hawaii's island of Oahu are under evacuation order. over fears that a dam could fail.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Thousands of residents were told to leave immediately. The alert comes as Hawaii is being pounded by the second significant storm this week. The governor says people have already had to be rescued on the north shore due to the catastrophic flash flooding. Emergency officials say an unknown number of homes have also been destroyed. The governor says the Hawaii National Guard has also been activated to help with the flood response. Well, it's apparently happened again. people have spotted a meteor streaking in the sky there. And so this time it's in the Houston area.
Starting point is 00:09:29 On Saturday, reports began flooding in from people who saw a meteor dart across the sky and then heard a loud boom. This dash cam video captures the moment when a white streak appears in the blue sky. The National Weather Service reports its satellites did pick up a possible meteor or meteor right. So far, no reports of where Saturday's meteor may have landed. The sighting comes just days after meteor flew over. over Northeast Ohio. Just ahead, we're talking sports. Our women's ACC teams getting into action today,
Starting point is 00:09:59 the matchups happening right here in the triangle. Plus, the Duke men's team advancing highlights from yesterday's win in Greenville. And as we head to break, here goes a lot of looking to downtown Durham. It's shaping up to be a beautiful day. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. All right, now time for the latest from the NCAA tournament. Number one seeded Duke advancing to the Sweet 16 after defeating TCU yesterday.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Our ABC 11 sports reporter, Trayvon Miles, he has the highlights from Greenville, South Carolina. For the third straight season, Duke men's basketball finds himself in the Sweet 16. A close game here in Greenville turns into a blowout in the second half as they beat TCU 81 to 58. Duke Big Man Pat Gongba made his return after a five-game absence. His presence was felt on the court immediately with a pair of buckets. Duke up by four points at halftime. TCU would tie the game at 44 midway through the second half and then Duke took off. They proceeded to outscore the Hornfogs 26 to 6. Over the next eight minutes, they roll with a 23-point win. I'm just really proud of them for, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:16 coming off three games in a row last week, Thursday, finding a way to win. Second half again, just finding a way. And now we have to get refrave. fresh in the next two days, find out who we're playing, and keep this thing rolling. I feel great. You know, this is, you know, surviving events. But, you know, Sweet 16 is not, I end-all B-all, so, you know, we're just looking forward to just get back getting some rest and then playing the next game. I mean, it's a great feeling, you know, came in this weekend with 68 teams, now it's only
Starting point is 00:11:45 16 left. I think it's just a great opportunity for us to compete. Keep playing Duke basketball. You know, this is what we work so hard for all year long, and we're going to keep it going. Duke will now move to the East Regional in Washington, D.C. It's their 31st appearance in the Sweet 16, tying them for first all time with the University of North Carolina. From here in Greville, South Carolina, Trayvon Miles, ABC 11, eyewitness news. All right, Trey, thanks.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Happening today, Duke Women's also looking to move into the tournament. The Blue Devils hosting Baylor at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. This will be Duke's second matchup against Baylor in NCAA Tournament History tip off at 4 p.m. The lady Tar Hills also taken to the court. UNC taking on the Maryland Terps in Chapel Hill. They are trying to earn a spot in the Sweet 16. That game starts at noon. And the women's wolf pack there on the road,
Starting point is 00:12:37 NC State facing the Michigan Wolverines and round two of the tournament. All right, our lady teams, our women's basketball teams really making some moves. They're doing pretty good. I'm excited. So we've got two games today here locally. And then again, NC State, they're away.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Okay, well, that, you know, if you don't want to watch basketball, you can go outside and it's going to be something. Okay, so people got some tea times ready. Yeah, I'll bet you. The golf course is probably pretty packed as we go throughout the day today. And it's going to be one of those weeks. Most of the weeks are pretty good, or most of the days, rather, be up and down temperatures again. But overall, this week, it's going to be pretty pleasant. So as we go throughout the day today, feeling like June, going to warm quickly, we'll call it a sizzling Sunday with temperatures up around record territory.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Brief cool down. It's really on Tuesday. We'll come down to near 60 and then we'll go right back up as we get later in the week in the 70s and even 80s by the time we get to Friday. And then overnight, Friday night and a Saturday morning, this front's going to settle in. Could bring some showers and maybe some thunder showers with it as well. We have clouds around us right now. This was a thunderstorm complex at the triad early this morning that's been fizzling as it's been moving closer to us. But these clouds will be with us for at least the next hour, maybe hour and a half. and then we'll get brighter skies here. Elsewhere we have sunshine. There's that little shower still trying to hold together
Starting point is 00:13:55 as it heads over towards Windell and maybe Zebulin. Don't be surprised if you get a sprinkle or a spotty light shower this morning. So the numbers really warming up today. Those high 80s around 4 o'clock this afternoon. UV index it is six. You can get a sunburn today. We'll have plenty of sun this afternoon. And the theme this last 30 days has been well above average,
Starting point is 00:14:14 double the amount of days is below average. And it's not just that it's above, It's significantly above. So tomorrow we're still at about 80. We'll dip down for a day below average. We'll start to moderate again. And then another front comes in as we head into next weekend, and that'll bring temperatures back down to the 50s.
Starting point is 00:14:31 60 degrees of North Hills right now, just a light breeze out there, less than five. It's 57 Roan Oak Rapids, 61 into Chapel Hill. And Sanford currently at 63 degrees. Same thing up in Roxburgh. Just a nice evening. Just walk around the neighborhood or hang out on the back porch.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Really pleasant. temperatures even at 8 o'clock we're holding on to 79 degrees under mainly fair skies at that time. High is going to be to the north tapping into the cooler air so we fall to the 50s, albeit upper 50s, on our Tuesday. Wednesday will moderate a good 10 degrees or so and partly cloudy skies. Showers are down to the south and you see all this heat out here in the 90s. That air mass is heading our way. It'll modify, but we should make it to the 80s by the end of the work week. Mountains today looking good.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Upper 70s in the northern mountains. since 80s around Nashville and Bryson City. And of course, the beach is looking good, mainly in the 70s. Little cooler Atlantic Beach today with highs near 70. Looking good today, but hot. Temperatures in the high 80s already used records, 89 degrees. I believe the records of Fayetteville's 88, so should break a record therefore today. And then clear skies tonight.
Starting point is 00:15:40 And look at these temperatures in the mid-60s. The average lows at 42. So a really warm start at the bus stop tomorrow morning. Shorts will be fine. Kids get home in the afternoon around 80 degrees. There could be an isolated shower, thunderstorm tomorrow's that front moves in. Temperatures cool Tuesday will moderate again later in the week. Friday, probably our best chance at a late day or evening shower with thunderstorm in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:16:03 And then a big drop getting cooler again as we headed the next weekend. Bianca. The roller coasters continue. Okay. Well, now's a great time to go ahead and download the ABC 11 mobile app. You see the temperatures. They go up and down by the day. You never know what you're going to get.
Starting point is 00:16:17 So, of course, we'll send the water. weather headlines directly to your devices. You can also check the first alert Doppler net and the seven-day forecast at any time. Straight ahead, dining across the triangle earlier this week, Joel Brown sat down with our friends at the News and Observer to talk about their list of the top 50 restaurants. That's next. Eyewitness News is bringing you tomorrow's headlines today. And this morning we are highlighting local restaurants, our friends over at the News and Observer,
Starting point is 00:16:47 compiling their list of the top 50 restaurants here in the triangle. Joining me now to talk about it is N&O dining reporter, Drew Jackson. Great to be here. Welcome to the show. Good to see you. Let's get right into this because this is a massive list. You've got diners, cafes, barbecue spots, even prestigious culinary award-winning restaurants. Talk about what went in to choosing the best 50 restaurants.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Well, I think that we, you know, we all of our restaurants here in the triangle, right? And so, you know, 50, it went pretty fast. And so we haven't done a list like this in a while that kind of showcased. all of the culinary talent, all the places that we love. And so we started by, you know, we asked readers, you know, tell us your favorites. The staff weighed in, some experts weighed in. And I, you know, kind of whittled it down to, you know, 50 or around 50 that we thought, you know, we're really representative.
Starting point is 00:17:37 And I think what's interesting about this list is it's not ranked. You know, we have a very diverse, you know, price point. We have many different cuisines here. You know, we didn't rank it because, you know, we want to, we want to, we want to, place like Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, you know, which is on the list, and herons to be able to sit next to each other and and sort of be, you know, be honored for what they do. You know, they do what they do, you know, among the best that anyone does. So you mentioned a couple here. These are the top 50 restaurants, but in no particular order. So let's talk about some of
Starting point is 00:18:11 the ones who are on the list and how it reflects the current triangle dining scene. Yeah, of course, you know, I feel like, you know, restaurants are so tied to our identity here. in the triangle and so you know we have very North Carolina spots like saltbox you know seafood joint Ricky Moore you know it I think that you know it's maybe even more fresh than than going to the coast sometimes you know it's just a you know beautiful showcase of our of our beaches and our waters you have a you know fine dining herons Crawford and Son a classic you have sandwich places like ideals here in Durham which is I think maybe
Starting point is 00:18:51 one of the best restaurants to open in the last few years. It just happens to be a sandwich shop. You know, you'll get a Philly-style roast pork. You know, the paper is translucent with grease by the time you get it. I'm from Philly now. Okay. It's very good. You're vouching for it. We should go.
Starting point is 00:19:07 And, you know, and then, you know, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, you know, a very southern staple, Pools Diner. You know, I could go on. You could go on. Thank you, Drew. We will certainly get people talking and hopefully get some people eating. There you go. as well. More on his report right now on the news and it's over a website or you can read it
Starting point is 00:19:26 on Sunday's paper. All right. Thank you. In our next half hour breaking news from Harndon County, what we're learning about a deadly motorcycle crash. Plus two teenagers found dead in Henderson. What we know about the parent facing murder charges and progress in Helene recovery details on FEMA's extending its housing program for people in western North Carolina. And as we head to break, here goes a live look in Fayetteville down in the sand hills. Good morning, y'all. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues next.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Right now, live coverage from your local news leader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast. Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. It's 9.30. Here is a live look at Wrightsville Beach. It looks so beautiful out there. I can't wait to get out there. I need to go visit our shores.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Good morning, Carolina. It's Sunday, March 22nd. I'm Bianc Holman. You're watching eyewitness news on ABC 11 and wherever you stream details of the top stories and all the day's news is just ahead. But first let's go ahead and check in
Starting point is 00:20:36 with meteorologist Steve Stewart. He has our first alerts to the forecast. Just looking at that beach view. What do you think? Yeah, pretty good. I mean, a lot cooler there than here. So if you don't like the heat, maybe maybe take a drive today.
Starting point is 00:20:46 Exactly. It's a couple hours. Right. Downtown right now, the clouds that we had this morning starting to push out, But we're still going to be dealing with the clouds for a little bit longer right around Wake County. But we're going to get up to 89 with lots of sunshine later today.
Starting point is 00:21:00 The average high temperatures in the mid-60s at 65. We hit 80 yesterday. Even with all the clouds we had in the afternoon, we're not going to see the clouds today. Lots of sunshine and the deficit now over an inch and a half. But there's a visible shot shows the clouds moving right across Wake County now soon to have sunshine. This was that thunderstorm that was rolling across the area and it kind of fizzled out. Here's what's left of that shower. You can see it's just barely holding together.
Starting point is 00:21:25 So a few areas might get a brief little morning shower. Don't think it's going to be raining today. It's going to be very brief, maybe five minutes in any one location where it's moving. And then you're back to some dry conditions. And we'll climb all the way to those high eighties today. Maybe getting the car wash. It's not a bad day for that with low rain chances as we go through the week. 60 degrees, the temperature right now out at North Hills looking good with some clouds.
Starting point is 00:21:49 58 Rocky Mount Wilson, 63 in the Smithfield, and also a 63. there in southern pines. We'll talk more about that coming up at a few minutes, Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Well, breaking all new this half hour, the Robinson County Sheriff's Office conducting a death investigation. The memo noted how jet fuel prices more than doubled since the war began in late February. The CEO says the surging prices could cost the airline an extra $11 billion this year alone. Now, long security lines stretching for hours as the partial government shutdown drags on. President Trump warning he's prepared to deploy ICE agents if Democrats do not agree to funding a deal. TSA officers working without pay, calling out sick and growing numbers, adding to the chaos and delays. It's a very stressful and frustrating knowing that I'm still expected to work without pay. I've had to stretch every dollar.
Starting point is 00:26:22 I've had to rely on help from my family. Democrats hold the line, insisting any deal must include reforms to immigration enforcement. ABC Selena Wang with Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal. Is this shutdown worth so many federal workers going unpaid in the travel chaos we're seeing? What Americans have seen from ICE in breaking down doors, dragging people out of cars, shooting them, killing them. Democrats say they're willing to fund other DHS agencies, including TSA, as negotiations play out.
Starting point is 00:26:55 Senate lawmakers working through the weekend, but no signs have a breakthrough. At some point, the Democrats are going to have to take yes for an answer.
