Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader, breaking stories from overnight and this morning, and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Good morning, Carolina. I'm Bianca Holman. It's a first alert day. We're going to send things over to a meteorologist, Steve Stewart.
So, again, have things even improved this morning? I know we've been watching the weather.
Yeah, we knew that it's going to get a little bit more active as we get going in the morning.
morning hours and it is right now. We have showers out there in a few spots, but if you look
upstream, what's coming our way? That is a tornado warning right now. It's out of our viewing
area, but if you look at the direction that this cell is moving, it's heading into Moore into
Chatham County doesn't necessarily mean it's going to hold together and have a tornado as it gets
closer to us, but the odds are there because we do have that severe risk for today.
It'll be a warm day today. We're going to have a window from basically the next hour or so
all the way through the early afternoon hours of having some of those cells, rotating.
and maybe spawning a tornado.
So you do see from the triangle and points north,
the needs that's a level two risk,
but a level one risk farther off to the southwest.
But you still see you can get severe weather
with that tornado not too far away from us.
Not a confirmed tornado, but radar indicated.
So late morning through the afternoon,
a good 40 to 60% of the viewing area
could get that risk of so strong to severe storm,
damaging wind.
But again, with this much rotation,
there is that possibility.
We're going to get those tornadoes.
There's the triple point.
Warm fronts are lifting up.
We are now in that,
We have good instability.
And as this front comes on in, it's going to help spark a line now of some stronger thunderstorms.
And all of these have the potential to have rotation.
Note the legend there that's in about an hour and a half from now or so at 1030, 11 o'clock,
right across the triangle at around noon to one, give or take a little bit.
And it could hold together and make it all the way to the 95 corridor by 2 o'clock.
When we get closer to three or four, that is going to continue moving away at a fairly good pace, and our severe risk is going to be over.
Outside right now, 72 degrees. That's 11 degrees warmer than yesterday. A southeasterly breeze.
Two point in the low 70s, a lot of fuel for these thunderstorms to get going.
Upper 60s in our northern county, southern pine 74. And again, we do have that strong thunderstorm not too far away kind of heading towards northern Moore County.
And it could be there within the next 30 to 45 minutes.
69 and 10 o'clock tonight, so it's a mild evening and quiet too.
All the weather's going to be done.
Clouds are going to be breaking.
Not bad for your after dinner walk.
Coming up as we head to next weekend, jackets will be needed.
A big drop in temperature or more on that coming up in a few minutes, Bianca.
All right, Steve, thank you.
Well, again, with all that information, now is a great time to go ahead and download the ABC 11 mobile app.
We're going to send all these headlines directly to your devices.
You can also check out the first alert, Docturnet and the seven-day forecast.
Turning to an update on a deadly shooting in Fayetteville, police identifying the victim as 17-year-old Nair Wilkerson.
Police say the shooting happened shortly after 3 o'clock Saturday on Maloney Drive in Lamon Street.
When they got there, they found Wilkerson who had been shot and he was rushed to the hospital.
That's where he later died.
No word on any arrest, but if you have any tips, you're asked to call crime stoppers.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office investigating a double homicide.

much information other than that this is believed to be an isolated situation.
He has people to be vigilant. We've reached out to the Sheriff's Office for more information.

Timothy T.J. Walker Jr. is accused of bringing a gun on educational property and carrying
a concealed weapon on campus. He's out on bond and is due back in court on October 15th.
An Orange County family is pleading for answers after they say their son was detained by ICE agents during a routine visit in Charlotte on Wednesday.
Isaac Gallegos graduated from Orange High School last year.
The avid soccer player first came to the United States with his mom in 2016 to escape violence in their native Honduras.
His parents tell us that he has a pending asylum case since 2016.
John Doubting sat with the family and shares the message Isaac sent from a detention center in Georgia.
An Orange County family broken apart after they say ICE agents detained their son.
Isaac Gallego came to the country in 2016.
His parents, Maria and Cesar, say he's always worked hard to make a good life for himself and their family.
She says he's just an amazing person for someone so young.
He's always worried about everyone else.
Wherever he goes, he's always thinking about others.
He's just a dear.
His parents say Isaac has held a job since he was 16 years old.
He's always found a way to make everyone feel loved.
He's always found a way to work.
And after a car accident seriously injured his father,
his family says he didn't hesitate to step up to support them.
He said, Dad, I'm going to accept this other position
because I know right now you need it.
You can't provide right now.
You've provided for me my whole life,
and now is my time to do so.
For his parents, they say their nightmare began Wednesday when they went to Charlotte for what they say was an annual routine visit about their asylum case.
You were both outside waiting for him and then he just never came back outside.
No, renezzo.
No.
He just called me crying, saying that he was getting detained and that they were sending him to Georgia, that he didn't know what was happening.
But I don't know what happened with me.
They're going to take me.
I have your phone number saved and I'm going to call you as soon as I can.
He said that in 38 seconds.
Why they were taking him away and they couldn't tell you why this was.

Georgia to stay faithful in Durham. I'm John Dowding. ABC 11. I witness news. John, thank you.
A court date set for the man accused of shooting a state bureau of investigation agent. Officials
say Marvin White started firing at Rockingham County deputies last week after they responded to
a call. According to them, White ran away and the FBI was called in to help find him.
We're told an agent confronted White who allegedly shot the agent in the leg. That
agent is back at home recovering while White faces a long list of charges.
He's due in court on October 15th.
Durham fires sharing funeral arrangements for 24-year-old Andrew Brooks.
He's the firefighter who lost his life on Thursday while responding to a fire in Durham.
According to Durham Fire, a visit station will be held for Andrew on Friday, October 16th from 4 to 7 p.m.
at Lamb's Chapel in Burlington.
The funeral service will be held the following day on Saturday, October 17th at 4 p.m.
Public is invited to attend.
Well, still to come, we are following plans for a new veterans care home near Fort Bragg.
How a million dollar development could shape the future for veterans in the Sand Hills.
And there's plans to build a new fire station in Chapel Hill.
We're going to tell you what to look out for when those discussions happen this week.
But first, good morning, Steve.
Hey, good morning there.
Listen, I've been watching for some stronger thunderstorms.
There's some that are developing out here.
They're kind of moving our way.
We'll have all the details on that coming up.
Welcome back everybody. Good morning to you. A first alert day today for that risk of severe weather.
And we have a line of storms that's going to roll in from the west as we go through the next few hours or so.
So high likelihood you're going to get a thunderstorm.
Might get a little sunshine though late in the day before sunset as this system moves on by.
Warm front is lifted up. There's the line right there.
It's fairly narrow.
But that's the one that's going to move on in here and already do have a tornado warning with this cell right now.
here. We're going to watch that. That's going to be heading up closer to Moore County here pretty soon. These are just showers that we've had this morning, but that is that severe risk. And that is going to hold together and move across the entire area as we go through the next few hours or so. Doesn't mean that it's going to be severe the whole time by any stretch, but the potential is there. We've got good instability now. We do have plenty of rotation as well. So we have to watch all these hours here. Once we get past, say, 2, 33 o'clock, things are going to start to wind down as far as a severe.
threat at least around the triangle, maybe another hour or two along the 95 corridor.
72 into North Hills, dew point at 71 with a breeze at about 10 miles an hour.
Now out of the southeast, eventually going to come from the south.
72 into Durham, 75 into Irwin and Fayville also at 75 degrees and humid out there.
Baby do be in town tonight. 71 before about 67 when you head home.
Weather will not be an issue at that time. Storms will be long gone and they'll
partly cloudy skies. New York's wet all the way across the northeast.
is going to be a bit of a mess today. That's tropical moisture from Rachel, which has been moving on shore.
And this is bringing not only heavy rain and wind and some flooding there, but big time mountain snows up in the bitter roots, maybe one to two feet of snow.
Areas that could have delays today, New York, Philly, D.C., Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, and Vegas.
Got your seven in a few minutes, Bianca.
All right, Steve, thank you.
Well, it's a major step for local veterans after two years without a dedicated facility.
Plans for a new veterans care home near Fort Bragg are moving forward.
This $40 million development could deliver critical support for those who served.
The push for a new facility began in 2023 after local leaders sounded the alarm on deteriorating conditions at the former veterans home on Cochran Avenue.
The 150-bed Fayetteville home closed in early 2024.
At the time, VA Deputy Secretary Brian Pierce said the agency did all it could to mitigate the failing conditions.
And it put a financial strain on the families as well because they had to travel away to see the family members in the nursing facilities that they was placed in
And so if signed into law the bill would transfer about 20 acres of Fort Bragg land in Harnock County to the state for construction
Well a historic Durham church and a high honor for a pastor who leads it
White Rock Baptist Church the city's first African-American church is marking 160 years and its pastor Reverend Dr. Reginald
Van Stevens just received the order of the long leaf pine, one of North Carolina's highest civilian honors.
So I am who I am largely because of who they are and who we are as a state and people.
It means a lot. Stevens is credited with expanding the church's reach, helping launch 57 ministries,
mostly outreach from food assistance to housing help. Well, Chapel Hill leaders are considering building a new fire station along with, along with more than
100 affordable housing units on Weaver Dairy Road extension.
The town council is expected to discuss plans for a new fire station for Wednesday night.
So this map shows that the proposed location, the current site of a fire training facility next to the existing station.
The existing station would be then converted to affordable housing.
Mike Tap is Deputy Fire Chief at New Hope Volunteer Fire Department, which also responds to calls in the area.
He says call volumes are rising along with population and any additional resources could help.
Same time that we enhance our response capabilities with trucks and equipment is going to help out.
And recruiting and retaining volunteers has become a real challenge.
Not only here, but everywhere.
All of the volunteer departments are facing recruitment and retention challenges.
If the town council approves the rezoning for the Weaver Dairy Road Extension Project,
the next steps could include final plan reviews and demolition of the existing fire training facility.
A reminder, you can find eyewitness news live on ABC 11 Disney Plus and everywhere you stream.
We are local news.
ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
We continue our countdown to the ABC 11 Together Food Drive.
This year we are celebrating four decades of serving our neighbors in need.
As food insecurity remains high, the ability to distribute more food is critical for food banks.
In Southeast North Carolina, one in six people face hunger.
One in four of them are children.
Second Harvest Food Bank is the leading hunger.
relief organization for Southeast North Carolina working to feed the feed that growing need that
really came to the forefront in the pandemic.
Need is gone up 30% since COVID ended and more and less resources.
And so more people are struggling with food insecurity.
When I first started I think food insecurity and here in the county were maybe 13%
nines at 17.9% and the states and numbers.
going up. More people need an assistance and just trying to make ends meet.
So Griffin says every donation to the ABC 11 Together Food Drive helps stretch those resources further.
The ABC 11 Together Food Drive kicks off November 18th. Our goal is 1.4 million meals.
The Morrisville Fire Department, Police Department actually, they're hosting a food drive today.
It's benefiting neighbor up. The organization aims to help those in need with basic essentials and
valuable skills to help the community thrive. So if you want to show your support, you can bring by
and non-perishable and shelf-stable food item to the police department from noon to 2 p.m.
The time now 9-19 on this Sunday morning.
Here goes a live look at Carolina Beach out there.
Gloomy skies.
The ways are rippling out there, Steve.
They're getting a little bit of rain.
But how are things looking here in the triangle as people head out?
Well, right now, if you look outside, you just think it's cloudy.
Yeah.
But we got a line of thunderstorms.
It's a narrow line that's coming our way.
You can see that now.
It's already moved through the Charlotte area.
That's it. That is our risk for severe weather today. It might not last that long, but not only do you get some gusty winds and some heavier downpours, a little bit of lightning, but we have to be concerned about some rotation, and we could get an isolated tornado. As that moves on through, the severe risk will go down, but we have a few hours to go as we're going to be watching that.
Brighter and breezy tomorrow, little breezy anyway. We'll be near 80 degrees. It'll be still a warm day, and then we really turn warm. Tuesday, especially Wednesday, folks. Wednesday, we could have temperature.
is climbing all the way up flirting with 90.
That's a record high.
We'll come down a little bit as that front,
a little backdoor front settles in
with little fanfare, but the really cool air,
the big change is going to be coming
as we head into next week.
So it's a level two risk,
basically from R to RDU and points off
to the east and north.
Again, this is going to be a time frame.
Basically, let's say at around 11 a.m.
Until we get to around 4 o'clock this afternoon
in this general area.
But any one band that moves on through,
Once it does, you're out of the risk of severe weather.
Isolated tornadoes can't be ruled out.
That right there is a tornado warning.
It kind of went away there.
But there it is.
And that's out of our viewing area.
But if that holds together and I've been doing a little diving into it,
it looks like the rotation is lessened quite a bit.
But that's going to be kind of moving towards more in Chatham County and eventually up
towards a triangle.
Doesn't mean we're going to get a tornado coming our way.
But that opportunity is going to be with us to have some rotation.
And you can see as we go into the early afternoon,
higher chances and then the chances are going to drop off significantly.
Here's the latest high resolution rapid refresh model shows those stales coming in here,
all of which could have rotation. So there's midday. So that's about two and a half hours away.
That could be right through the triangle with the potential here to have this being severe right across
Wake County at 1.30 by 2.30 or 3 o'clock pushing to the 95 corridor and then exiting after that.
Again, once this ban moves by your neighborhood, your severe risk.
risk is over at that time.
72 into North Hills.
That's 11 degrees warmer than yesterday.
High dew point as well.
That's a lot of available fuel for these thunderstorms.
The warm front is lifted to the north now.
And the triple points just out to our west.
Now things will change though later in the week.
Lots of sunshine mid 80s for Tuesday.
Maybe close to 90 as we get into Wednesday.
This little front comes in briefly,
cools us slightly than it retreats again.
So we go back to a little bit warmer on Friday.
And then a big change is going to be going to
Big change is going to come blasting in here next weekend.
A true shot of some cooler air.
We could actually fall down to the upper 30s as we get into the latter half of next weekend.
Seventies to near 80 today.
Watch for the showers and thunderstorms.
Once that moves on by, probably seeing some breaks in the clouds.
And that trend continues as we go into the evening.
But a mild evening, we should be 53.
We'll be 63 and another warm one tomorrow with the sun cloud.
Mix Tuesday and Wednesday, rather warm indeed.
That's a record high on Wednesday.
say here comes a weak front, cools us a little bit as we open the state fair.
Friday's still 83.
More clouds likely going to be dry than a big shock to the system.
We're going to be a bit chilly.
Temperatures in the 60s and lows around 41 and even cooler next Sunday.
We'll be back after this.
Insurance is entering a new era.

If you've got Starfish seafood trio in your fridge right now, do not eat it.
It's being recalled because it may be contaminated with Listeria.
The product has an expiration date of December 1st.
first 2027. It contains smoked salmon, halibut, and trout. It was sold in eight-ounce
packages in six states, including right here in North Carolina. No illnesses have been reported,
but you're advised to return the product to the store for a full refund. A kids, a safety group
wants to chat GPT off limits for teens. That's following the chat GPT for teens rollout
two months ago. It's designed with safeguards intended to limit content about suicides of harm,
but a recent evaluation by the safety group found safeguards may not be in
enough to keep kids safe.
Jemise Price spoke to parents and teachers who are weighing in on the conversation.
I monitor them.
I check their phones.
Allison Newsom is a mom of two teens, 13 and 17 years old.
She says she wants to know what her kids are doing with their phones,
whether that social media or chat bots like chat GPT.
I do check-ins with them all the time.
And I also teach them how to properly utilize it in a way that is helping them in a sense,
but not enabling them.
Because I still want them to do a lot of the thinking.
I don't want them to be complacent with utilizing AI to take over.
Alice and kids are a part of a generation that's growing up with AI.
She lets her kids use chat GPT with parameters.
You do have some students that will abuse it and utilize it to like cheat on like assignments and stuff.
And that they're using it in a negative context.
But then like my daughter, she's in an AI program at our school,
but she's utilizing it in a way that is conducive to her education in a positive aspect.
Even with parameters in place and what parents call a positive approach to chat GPT,
a watchdog group says it could pose a safety risk for teens.
Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute is calling chat GPT for teens an unacceptable risk
after testing it with more than 4,000 prompts on account registered to 13 through 17-year-olds.
It found parents may not get safety alerts and the crisis responses fell short.
It is an eye opener that does make me like once I go and like do some research, you know, and educate myself.
It also found that study mode can simply do students homework, something that's concerning for this educator.
If AI can identify what you want and answer your question, surely it can identify a problem that you're having, right?
So surely we should have a way of putting this alert button there that like, hey, something's not right.
And that was our Demise Price reporting there.
So we are continuing to monitor East I.EAS.
It's claimed the lines of four people in its path is aimed toward us.
So the U.S. Energy Department, they are actually taking some action.
We're going to show you how it's supposed to help supply disruptions and where the relief is going close to home.
As we're following the aftershocks of this earthquake in Panama on Friday,
a local event planner telling us what happened when she was visiting the country in our next half hour.
And as we had to break and you head out the door, here goes a live look over Fayetteville on this Sunday morning.
We are local news.

ABC 11, eyewitness news continues now.
Well, time to wake up.
Good morning, Carolina.
It's Sunday, October 11th.
I'm Bianco, Holman.
You're watching eyewitness news right now on ABC 11,
and wherever you stream, it's a first alert day as we track post-tropical storm East IES.
We are here in the weather center.
I know we aren't usually over here.
If we're in here, that means something intense is going on, Steve.
Yeah, the potential.
Tornadoes, potentially.
Yeah, yeah.
There's a tornado warning out there right now.
Not our viewing area just yet, but that is the potential as we go throughout the day today.
We have to watch.
You can see, this is starting to organize now, and this is going to turn into more of a line
that moves through the region as we go through the next few hours or so.
And that is a tornado warning.
That little dip there.
That looks like a little tail coming down.
Right in there there's some rotation.
We're a little bit far from our radar site
to be this far off to our south and west.
So we're shooting a little bit higher into the storm
so I can't get low level rotation.
So we're not getting what we would normally get,
but when this gets closer,
we'll be able to examine it.
Here's our viewing area right here into Moore County.
We'll see if that does indeed hold together.
Doesn't necessarily mean a tornado's gonna move
into that region, folks,
but that line will and that line has potential.
You can see the little bit of rotation
that's been showing up and still going on
in this warning box.
And there was another one there, but that one kind of fizzled out.
And that's what we expect.
If we do get a tornado, these are going to be short track, meaning short live, not going to be very long, but a tornado nonetheless.
So that risk is with us with a level two risk.
We'll still get up to 80 today.
Most of the day, probably rain free, but there's going to be a ban that moves through that'll really bring some intense gusty winds with it.
And also that potential for a tornado.
About 40 to 60 percent of the viewing area has this risk of getting that severe weather.
And again, damaging winds and isolated tornado.
There's the triple point, right?
Warm fronts lifted up.
We're now getting into that warm sector.
This is the sector that's going to be primed
to give us a lift that we need.
The dew points are coming up.
We're in the 70s right now.
The instability is going to be there.
So a lot of parameters plus the wind shear
to get that rotating cell.
Here's the latest high resolution
rapid refresh model.
Does bring that line into the triangle
as we get into midday early afternoon,
give or take a half hour.
So, but once this moves by your area,
the severe risk is done.
So it'll be a short,
chance of getting that severe weather. Then it moves along the 95 corridor. There's three, four,
five o'clock. Then it moves on out here. Then we're done with the weather. It's for the severe weather.
And then we're going to be dealing with some sunshine for the rest of the week, most of the week.
72 into North Hills right now. 68 Oxford, 75 in the favor. You see the winds now starting to come more
out of the south. And that's bringing in even more as far as the humidity is concerned.
Evening is going to be fine. Temperatures in the 70s. The severe weather is all long gone and will be partly
cloudy, maybe a little breezy.
Next weekend though, it's gonna feel a lot different.
You're gonna wanna jacket more on that coming up
in a few minutes.
All right, Steve, thank you.
The US Energy Department took action
in response to East IES.
As spokesperson said, the department will authorize
their release of up to four million barrels of crude oil
from the strategic petroleum reserve.
The goal is to help ease any supply disruptions
caused by the storm.
The hurricane has temporarily disrupted oil production
in the Gulf of Mexico.
The emergency authorization will provide
up to two million barrels each to
on mobile and BP America.
So what does that mean at the pumps?
Take a look right now.
Here on your screen, you can see gas prices trickling down word here in the triangle for some parts
of the triangle already.
And now according to gas buddy, you can get gas as low as 370 near Morseville.
These prices come two days after Governor Josh Stein signed House Bill 3, temporarily
suspending the 41 cents a gallon gas tax through November.
And right now, cleanup efforts are underway in Panama after a strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake
rattled the country on Friday, but officials are still assessing damage and casualties.
I didn't know what was about to happen. I didn't know if the building was going to topple over.
Like I was I was really, really scared. And that was a local event planner recounting the moment that
she was on the 21st floor of her resort in Panama when the earthquake hit. Alana Walker lives in
the triangle, but she is in the country for work as an event planner, her client, a bride and groom from
the Washington, D.C. area. And Walker says that there were soon.
tsunami warnings, however, the water has receding and all is clear just in time for her client's wedding festivities.
Well, turning now to the latest in the Cornell civil case, a second defendant name in Jane Dole's lawsuit
alleging forcible drugging and gang rape at the Cornell University fraternity house asking a judge to remove New York
Attorney General Letitia James from the case. Winston Lee joined fellow Kai-5 fraternity brother
Gilio Lopez in the effort. Lee argued the attorney general has already
publicly prejudged the guilt of subjects in her investigation. It comes after a Manhattan judge
overseeing the civil case ordered the same court documents to be sealed, some court documents to be
sealed. She also urged everyone involved in the case to lower the temperature before someone gets
hurt. Well, sexual assault allegations at Cornell University has really sparked renewed
conversation about safety on college campuses. A local rapes crisis center tells us that college
students make up about a quarter of the sexual assault victims they've helped this year.
The director also says sexual assault cases are often underreported. The ABC 11I team and ABC News
data team looked at the numbers at major universities here in the triangle. The latest data
shows 16 rapes reported at UNC Chapel Hill in 2025 on campus, zero off campus.
Nine rapes reported on the campus of Duke, one off campus. Three reported at NC State on campus
and zero off campus. Three also reported on the campus of NC Central in Durham.
Some schools like NC State have a sexual assault helpline, and that's one way people can report an incident.
Universities also have counseling centers that can help, and we have more information on our website at ABC11.com.
Amtrak celebrating the completion of improvements at the Rocky Mount Station. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this week at the facility on Coastline Street.
More than $7 million was spent building a new accessible boarding platform and accessible pathways and also installing new lighting and signage all out there.
Amtrak says it's committed to providing safe, accessible, and convenient travel for all customers.

for the meet and greet.
We are reaching the final days of Hispanic Heritage Month.
So that's why we are introducing you to a chef that has opened many a restaurants in the triangle.
We are following his journey straight ahead.
But folks are headed out to church.
They need an umbrella.
You know what?
That's a good idea.
And also just make sure you have a way to get some weather warnings to you,
whether it's mobile or your radio, because this is the line we're watching right now.
We already have one or two tornado warnings that we've had this morning still going on.
This whole line's going to move across the area in the next few hours.
All the details coming up.
Welcome back, everybody.
For 50 years, Canadians have wondered what the names of IKEA furniture mean.
Like Natopa, the guardrail for children's beds.
Natopa means giving your favorite person room to grow.
It means their safety and your piece of...
No.
In Swedish, Natopa means night monkey.
IKEA, 50 years of Swedish native.
at home. Look, he's wearing little pajamas. So cute. So our day for a line of some strong thunderstorms
are going to be coming away. Listen, most of the day is going to be cloudy, little damp, but not much in the
way of rain, but when the line moves in, not only are the rain shower is really going to pick up
in intensity, you're going to get some gusty winds, and the potential that we could get a brief,
isolated, a short-lived tornado, and then we'll get a little bit of sunshine on the back side
once this moves on by. So there's the line right now, and you can see how it's kind of a picking up
intensity stretches all the way down into South Carolina out ahead of the front.
Severe thunderstorm warning now in parts of that is in Moore County and that is a tornado
warning just out of our viewing area. Again, that whole line we need to watch closely for
rotation. Everything else is a spotty shower. These are the rain showers we had this morning.
That's why many areas out there are a bit damp even though it might not be raining at your
house just yet. But we'll have that line move on through. Then the rain chances are coming
down quickly behind it. It's not going to last that long. Any one location.
with that severe threat might only last 30 to 45 minutes.
72 in the North Hills right now.
DuPont at 71 with the southeasterly breeze turning more southerly.
And that's really boosting in not only the temperature,
but the moisture content.
Dew points are in the 70s across the region.
And we're in the 70s with air temperatures as well.
Baby Newby in town tonight, 71 when you walk into Lenovo,
when you head home 67, quiet weather,
just partly cloudy skies at that time.
The Northeast has rain.
Dallas is good.
Denver's good.
This is tropical moisture.
It's going to cause flooding, high wind concerns out there.
And when you get all the way up there into the bitter roots, that's a lot of snow, one to two feet of snow expected.
So cities that could have issues today, New York, Philly, D.C., Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas.
Got your 7-day forecast in a few minutes.
I know they got to have tax money to operate a city.
But here, it's just going too far.
reason are too high.
We're turning now to the controversy over yet another round of increases when it comes to property revaluations in Wake County.
Wade County Commissioners held a public hearing this week, focusing on how they'll conduct the 2027 property revaluations.
This is used to figure out how much you'll pay in property taxes.
Doan Hogarth was at that meeting in Raleigh, and he says nearly 460,000 parcels will be revalued as Wake County looks to create.
create more revenue. The move, however, is not being welcomed by folks who have lived here for decades.
The heart breaks me. Break my heart. I got my house of sell it virtually because they can't pay the
taxes on it. Joseph Gordon has lived in his Raleigh home for 27 years and has watched property
value soar, steps from his front porch. Everything right here sells over $67,000. A far way off
from the less than $100,000 he paid for it. As Wake County Commissioners meet just a few miles away in
downtown Raleigh to discuss property values. He says the values have gone too far too fast.
I know they got to have tax money to operate a city, but here it's just gone too far.
The reason is too high. North Carolina state law requires property values to be reassessed every
eight years. However, Wake County Commissioners have opted to do so more frequently. They say it's to
assign fair market value to properties and to allow the increase in property tax payments to be
gradual instead of all at once. People being so upset that we're just randomly pulling things out of the
air. And so I hope that everyone that's listening tonight can at least appreciate that is absolutely not the
case. Property taxes are a major revenue source for the county accounting for some 75% of the county's
budget. The higher the value in turn means more money a property owner is set to pay for in their taxes.
But for long time Wake County resident Brenda Williamson, she believes it's unfit.
to the people who have called Wake County home for so long to pay for the increase in value,
the area is rapidly experiencing. I think that people who have been here for a long time should not
have to pay brunt of it. That was our Duan Hoggart reporting. So it's important to note that the
property tax rate will remain unchanged. However, if your home value is to increase, the amount
you pay in taxes is likely to increase. So here are some important dates to mark on your calendar.
Revaluation results will be presented to county commissioners on January 19th.
Your notice of assessed value goes out beginning January 22nd.
And if you want to appeal, you have until April 30th to file with the Board of Equalization and Review.
November 17th is the final day to appeal to the state property tax commission.
Well, as we head to break, here goes a look at the flight delays happening all across the country.
You can see we've got some delays down in Phoenix and also in Boston.
We know that Phoenix area in Las Vegas having some rain hit that area, which can make a difference.
We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Well, this morning, our celebration of Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month continues.
For many families, some of their most treasured memories and traditions are shared around the dinner table and in the kitchen.
And when it comes to Hispanic culture, many of their stories are told through food, an important conduit to open up their culture to the world.
Chef Oscar Diaz has opened many restaurants in the triangle over the past decade, celebrating foods with influences from all over Latin America.
Oscar Diaz's journeys took him to some of the world's most renowned kitchens in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and back to Chicago.
Then he got a call from a friend to come check out North Carolina.
He now has a number of restaurants across the triangle, including three.
And here in Durham, to Taco, Little Bull, and Actoon.
and so his skills have been even showcased on season 23 of Top Shop.
And that's the point I'm at in my life now.
I think I view life a little bit that crazy confidence
or like slight ego that I might have had when I was younger
is different now.
Like I think I viewed things down through like the lens of like gratitude.
And it's, you know, what an awesome experience I was allowed to have in my life.
And so you can also check out his food in Clayton,
Burlington, and even at RDU Airport at Adios.
Also, if you want to see more of the conversation with Chef Oscar Diaz, an extended version is on our website at ABC11.com.
All right now at 950 here goes a live look and Fayetteville.
And close to that area, Steve, we are watching some severe weather in the area.
You're right.
And it's going to be coming our way.
This is the entire line that I'm watching.
It's a narrow line, but it's packing a bit of a punch.
Not only do you get some gusty wind, straight line winds that could be severe criteria.
But on top of that, we are seeing rotation in a lot.
of those cells. So a level two risk for that today from the triangle and points eastward to level one risk elsewhere. I'll show you that coming up.
Brighter breezy tomorrow. Highs will be near 80 degrees and then we're really going to warm up Tuesday. Wednesday I've got us at close to 90. It's a record high little dip in the temperature with the back door front. But it's really this coming weekend where you're going to get a little shock to the system as some much cooler air comes in. Level one risk off to our south and west, but you've got severe weather out here as well. And it's a level two risk around the triangle.
points north and east. Again, we can get some isolating strong storms with rotation in them.
This one's severe right now. The tornado warning is out of our viewing area, but this warning
is in parts of Moore County right now for severe thunderstorms all along this line. Now, that's
really impressive. Gusty winds are in here. But just to the south, I'm not seeing a whole heck
of a lot of rotation here, but this is what we call our sheer tracker. And it actually shows
where we've seen rotation kind of fizzles out as it gets closer to where the cell is. Now,
That's good and that's likely what we expect.
If we get these tornadoes, they should be relatively short-lived and not last that long.
And keep in mind our activity around the triangle, it's a short window of opportunity, really ramps up midday, one o'clock into two, and then it comes down sharply thereafter.
Here's a high-resolution rapid refresh model shows those cells coming into our western counties here by 11 o'clock.
And this could be off by 30, 40 minutes or so.
But it gives you the idea that line moves in.
There's 12, 1 o'clock, right across.
Wake County and then we continue with that as we go into two o'clock then all these areas
obviously done with the severe risk and now it's around Lewisburg all the way down into
Goldsboro and Wilson then it's along the 95 corridor three o'clock and by four o'clock most of us
are done with severe could see a couple of spotty showers in its wake but that's really about it.
Right now we look outside at 72 cloudy some reduced visibility in many areas still
68 into Oxford 72 Lewisburg flow more coming in from the south southeast
now and we're seeing those numbers climbing to those mid-70s and a lot of areas are going to touch 80.
A lot of 80s on Tuesday. Wednesday we could be flirting with 90. This front comes in briefly,
cools us a little bit, then it retreats again on Friday, but then the colder air really blasts in
here, folks, and we're talking a shot of some chilly air as we head into the upcoming weekend.
So today, 70s to near 80, the line of severe thunderstorms should roll on through again as we get
into mid-morning, I'm sorry, mid-afternoon, and then late.
afternoon we're done skies are starting to clear that trend continues tonight
loz are in the 60s we should be in the lower 50s so it's a mile start to another
warm day about 81 with the sun cloud mixed Tuesday and Wednesday cranking the
heat up Thursday as we welcome the state fair a little weak front might cool us a
little bit and then on Friday more clouds but as we head into the weekend get
ready temperatures taking a nose dive we'll be back after this all right with the
weather being a little iffy today it's a great day to stay indoors and
more than 300 new homes.
It's the triangle parade of homes
and this year marks the largest parade in 18 years.
So this morning we're taking you
to an affordable option in the heart of Kerry.
We're in our Helmsley model.
I'm Joel Janice with Smith Douglas Holmes.
Helmsley is conveniently located, right,
kind of smack dab in the middle of Fenton
and Crossroads Plaza.
Proximity with affordability component,
attainability component is probably the key.
We want to build for teachers and nurses
and first responders.
What's been cool for me is to watch a single mom come in with three kids and they're just trying to get into a new home.
And we make that attainable.
We want people to feel like they've achieved home ownership without people cutting corners.
This is 24 units, just over 1,800 square feet.
Nine foot ceilings are the open floor plans or that our hallways are wider and our stairs were wider.
And prices are starting in the high threes.
We actually put in an integrated outdoor living space.
It's townhome, so you don't get that outdoor living space.
So we partner with Duke progress through their energy efficiency program and actually guarantee utility usage.
We try to start with a blank slate.
We want people to walk through our model homes and say like, wow, I can't believe I'm getting this much for this price.
Okay. Well, the parade of homes happens three weekends in October across 10 counties.
It's completely free open to the public.
The homes range from $3,000 to over $9 million.
So there's something for every taste and price.
And you can find more information on the parade of homes.
on their website.
I witness returns at 10.
So here goes a live look at the Raleigh Skyline.
It's a little foggy out there.
Make sure you keep an umbrella with you.
