This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Good morning, Carolina. I'm the alcoholman. It's Sunday, September 13th, this morning on eyewitness news. A crime alert in wake in Orange counties, police investigating a string of car break-ins in Briar Creek in Chapel Hill. You'll hear from some of the victims. Plus, putting one foot in front of the other to 2026 tunnels, the towers climb in Raleigh to honor the first responders on 9-11. And plus a heartwarming update on a dog who was rescued from a dumpster in Durham. So right now here at 9 o'clock, let's go ahead and take a live look at the Raleigh skyline. And a little gray out there, but we should have peaks of sun.

I know some folks are headed out to church or headed out to, you know, do some errands before the week starts, Steve. So what can people expect? Yeah, it's going to be a humid afternoon. Temperatures are going to get up there around 90 degrees or so still damp in a few areas. We had rain early this morning. That's been moving on out. So today we're going to get that sun cloud mix this afternoon up around 90 degrees and rather humid as well. And we had most of the rain last night was in our northern counties. Let me show you that in a second. Only 1,300's at R2 at U with a high temperature of 86 yesterday. But look at where the areas that really needed

the rain got the rain. I mean, we're talking about a significant amount in a few areas wide spread one to two inches of rain, a little narrow swat there. Doppler estimates of around three inches of rain. So this is where it's been the driest up to our north, not as much rain farther to the south. Here's what's left of the showers exiting the area right now. You can see on First Alert Doppler net. It's a little bit there in Edgecombe County. And again, a little tiny shower can't be ruled out.

But the lion's share of this event is over with. Heading out on Lake today, look at the feels like temperatures, climbing to those mid-90s, maybe upper 90s around four this afternoon. and we'll keep a one in five chance at a stray shower model trying to show a little pop up here and there. But generally speaking, we're done with the rain. Right now, we're still seeing clouds at North Hills at 76 degrees, and that dew points at 74. It's steamy out there. 73 row in Oak Rapids, 77 Goldsboro and Clinton and into Fayetteville and Silas City at 75.

Last home game of the regular season against Nashville today, 86 degrees at start time around 1 o'clock, about 87 when you head home. Fan appreciation day for today. A few nice days to look forward to this week. More on that coming up in just a few minutes. All right, Steve, thank you. We got some breaking news in Cumberland County. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, two people were hit by a vehicle early this morning. It happened just before 2 a.m. in the area of southeastern Boulevard and NC Highway 87. When troops arrived on the scene, they found two people laying in the median and the small SUV in the roadway with heavy front end damage. Both people were taken to the hospital, a 30-year-old. The mail has lost as life-threatening injuries, and another person was complaining of non-life-threatening injuries. So the Highway Patrol is investigating. This morning, Mali Police are investigating after a man fired shots into an auto repair shop. It happened Saturday afternoon just after 1230 at MB Auto Service on Renfro Road.

Police say 54-year-old Elvin Field shot into the business after a payment dispute over repairs. According to documents obtained by eyewitness news, police alleged Fields also fired his weapon outside the business and then drove off. Police found Fields not far away on South Saunders Street where they took him into custody and recovered two weapons. Fields is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, felony kidnapping and a number of other gun-related charges. He's due in court on Monday. A woman is dead following a shooting in South Durham. It happened around 1.30 Saturday afternoon. Police say the woman was driving on Revere Road towards Sedwick Road.

when someone opened fire. You can see what appears to be a bullet hole in the window of the SUV there. And so the gunfire hit the driver and a passenger. She died at the scene and the passenger was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. Investigators are asking anyone with any information about this shooting to come forward. Well, law enforcement across the triangle sounding the alarm after a series of car break-ins Friday night and into Saturday morning. Nearly 90 cars were targeted across Chapel Hill and Briar Creek. Penelope Lopez spoke with the victims on what happened, plus officials on what they want you to keep in mind. After nearly 60 vehicle break-ins in Chapel Hill and 27 in Briar Creek, officials are urging drivers to remain alert and to avoid leaving valuables in their cars. This is not the Saturday morning Olivia had hoped for.

It's just really unfortunate. It's going to be raining for the next couple of days. So we're going to have to rush to get the window fixed. I mean, you know, most insurance doesn't cover, like, breakings. According to Chapel Hill Police, the suspects moved fast between 3 and 4.30 in the morning, hitting mostly hotel and apartment parking lots, smashing windows along the way. And then you had to put yellow painters tape all over and seal it in the inside. And she is not alone. Others were also hit.

Sophie Bozemsky, who lives at Timber Hollow apartments like Olivia, was also targeted. I went to bed and woke up around three hearing some commotion. Sound like people were arguing or loud noises outside. I didn't know what was going on, but it makes sense that meanwhile, my car was being, you know, broken into. This was Bozzymsky's second time in the past couple of months. I actually was smart enough to bring my wallet out this time because last time they took the wallet. It's really frustrating because it's violating. It's vandalism.

It is an invasion of privacy and safe space. And this is some of the aftermath shattered windows and glass everywhere. And it didn't stop there. Two hotel parking lots in Breyer Creek had 27 more cars broken into around five Saturday morning. Sophie says she's going to have to pay $500 to get her car window fix. It's a great place to live, but I think the security around Chapel Hill just needs to be picked up a little bit because you can never be too safe. And officials say they're working closely to see if any of the break-ins are connected. Reporting in the Raleigh, eyewitness News Center, I'm Penelope Lopez, ABC 11, eyewitness news.

All right, Penelope, thank you. This morning, a happy ending for a dog that was found trapped inside a dumpster in Durham. The pup now named Kingston went home Saturday with his new family. The Anti-Protection Society of Durham says Kingston. Adopter has experienced rehabilitating dogs and resonated with his story. Since being rescued, Kingston has been at the APS of Durham being treated for a skin infection. He'll continue his recovery in his new home. The shelter says Kingston warmed up quickly with the staff and has a playful side. They also thank the community for their outpouring of support. Meanwhile, the search continues for this person of interest seen near the dumpster where Kingston was found.

Anyone who recognizes this person on your screen should contact the Durham County's Sheriff's Office. Climbing 110 stories, all in remembrance of the September 11th terror attacks. The 2026 tunnel to Towers Raleigh, 9-11 tower climb, seeing a major turnout Saturday morning. Organizers explain how this event will benefit families still impacted by the tragedy 25 years later. I saw those towers come down. It just devastated me. Gene Ben Bonito grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and climbs the stairs of the Wells Fargo building in Raleigh

for her friend Doris's husband, Billy Lake. He was on ladder 15. August Lawrence climbs for Eric Olson, who was on ladder 15 the day the towers were struck in Manhattan. Some of them never sold their families. Some of there did. You know, there was a lot of people that was taken from us. A lot of very good souls.

These fire freders had to go through hell and back. and go up through many flights of stairs and all the way back down and they had to repeat that process multiple times. The 26 Tunnel to Towers-Rolling 9-11 Tower climb is an event to honor the first responders who climbed 110 stories to rescue as many people as they could. Participants climbing 30 floors on Fayetteville Street multiple times, all in remembrance. We almost reached our goal. Our goal was 10 grand this year. We're a few hundred dollars short. All that goes towards all the programs that Tunnel of Towers does by paying off mortgages. building smart homes for disabled veterans. Each person understanding the weight still felt to this day.

I just lost my cousin, Gary Howard. He's FDNY captain, and he just succumbed to his 9-11 illnesses last month. I see what happens, and I've seen how it affects these families, and I feel terrible for them. If I could take the pain away, it's all I would want to do for them. A dark moment in America's history, but events like this one promote solidarity and unity. All I want to do is help people and make the world a better place and just try my hardest. I hope every year it continues to grow so that people remember.

We should never forget. Well, September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. In our next half hour, the push to help veterans who may be struggling with their mental health. And a court victory for some female workers who were fired by the Trump administration. That story is just ahead. And preserving history, the time capsule being buried at Raleigh's new, Red Hat Ample Theater and you're being asked to help out. But first, I check outside, Steve.

It's warm, it's humid. It's so cloudy for now. We'll get breaks on the clouds a little bit later on a little damp. We had some rain that's now moving on out. Should be hot in Charlotte today. Kickoff numbers in the high 80s, Tennessee, 91, maybe a thunderstorm down in Houston today. But if you're a fantasy football fan weather, really not too much of an issue. Got your forecast after the break.

This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11. I Witness News. Good morning, everybody. Out and about today, temperatures are going to be in those 80s to near 90 degrees. It's really humid out there as well. Had a couple of spotty showers, just a lot last couple of hours that are exiting the area now. So we're pretty much done with the rain. I'll keep that 20% chance in. I can't rule out a stray little shower. But you see the rain we had this morning. So it left us damp in a few areas. That's leaving Edgecombe County right now. You can see these showers are pulling away. Don't be surprised if you get a sprinkle or two out there. But that's really it for the day. Feels like, numbers in the mid 90s, maybe some upper 90s, so the pool, good way to beat the heat. If you're going to be out in about for it today, it's 76 now with the cloud cover. It's not terrible, but it's really humid out there with a west breeze at about five miles an hour. 77 Rocky Mount, 73 in the Roxborough and Fayetteville also at 77 degrees. Heading down to Walnut Creek tonight to see baby metal, 86 degrees about start time.

79 when you head back home, it'll be humid, but mainly fair skies at that time. northeast. Atlanta looks good. Dallas is hot. Denver's hot as well. Chicago gets a couple of showers. Still some delays at JFK over an hour now, but the other major hubs looking good. Got your seven eight coming up in just a few minutes. Bianca. All right, Steve, thank you. A federal judge has ruled that a Trump administration order to cut FEMA staffing nearly in half was illegal. On Friday, the judge found that the Department of Homeland Security acted arbitrarily when it revoked FEMA's authority to renew contracts for on-call disaster response teams. Officials were also rebuked for intentionally deleting text messages on the signal app that appeared relevant to the case.

The decision is a win for labor unions in the ongoing lawsuit. Both sides have been ordered to come up with an agreement on the scope of the relief. Addressing overcrowding in Wake County classrooms, the option on the table for school board memories. That story coming up in our next half hour. And the president touches a nerve while in Dublin, saying that he would love to see a United Ireland. that story just ahead. And Celine Dion, becoming emotional on stage when we're with the start of her first concert

in more than six years. And as we had to break right now at 914 on this Sunday morning, here goes a live look into downtown Raleigh. We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. President Trump is in Ireland this weekend, meeting with Irish leaders

and attending the Irish Open. The president discussed a war with Iran and its impact on the global economy, but his comments on a United Ireland are drawing a sharp response. ABC's Michelle Frensen explains. I don't want to cause any problems, but I will tell you,

I'd love to see it unified. During a visit to Ireland, President Trump, weighing in on one of the country's most sensitive and divisive issues. I have friends on both sides, great people. They're Irish people. How can they be bad, right? I'd love to see it uniform.

I think it would be a great, yeah, a great feather in everybody's cap. Did that happen? It's going to happen eventually. The comments break with previous U.S. presidents who have supported the peace agreement while remaining neutral on reunification. The island is divided between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which remains part of the United Kingdom. Violence escalated in the late 1960s during a period known as the Troubles and ended with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The United States played a key role in helping broker that.

peace deal. Under the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland remains part of the UK unless voters there and in the Republic of Ireland choose unification. In Dublin, thousands protesting President Trump's visit and some also criticizing his comments. Say it like that, what that is going to destroy, alienate the people we're trying to negotiate with in the north, the GUP and other elements. It's just ridiculously irresponsible and childish. Be clear, I'm in favour of United Ireland, but I don't think it is Donald Trump's place to comment on the situation in this country. And he really has no idea of the history or any understanding of what the people are coming from here. Trump's comments are also drawing sharp criticism from pro-British unionist leaders in Northern Ireland,

who say its future must be decided by the people who live there. President Trump later acknowledged there is no good answer to the question of reunification. The UK's Prime Minister says a referendum is off the table. Michelle Franzen, ABC News, New York. Michelle, thank you. We're learning Mitch McConnell may head back to work on Capitol Hill tomorrow. The Kentucky Senator's staff is telling Senate leaders that he'll return when the Senate reconvenes on Monday after their summer recess. Kentucky Governor Andy Bashir, a Democrat, says he has not heard from McConnell.

He's also calling for transparency about the 84-year-old lawmakers' health. There are no reports of McConnell being seen publicly since his hospitalization on June 14th. An emotional return to the stage for legendary singer Celine Dion. Celine was seen tearing up at the start of the 16-date residency outside Paris. This is no ordinary concerts he reached for the star. It's her first major run since stepping away from the spotlight in 2022 due to stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological and autoimmune disorder. Dion sang all her greatest hits in the show that lasted more than two hours.

Right now at 920 on this Sunday morning, here goes a live look into Fayetteville, where it looks like the rain has cleared up some. Still got some clouds out there, Steve, but looks like things are improving. Things are improving, yeah. With the exception of just a stray shower a little bit later on, I think we're dry for the day. It'll be hot.

We have temperatures up around 90. It's going to be steamy too. When these clouds break and we get the sun peeking on through, you'll be sweating out there for sure. So a sulfury afternoon still damp in a few areas if you're taking a morning walk because the rain we had last night, especially along the north of Interstate 85. Still a hot one tomorrow, but a dry front comes in late in the day.

Maybe a stray shower. I put a 20% chance in, but the point is that front opens the door to cooler and much lower humidity is going to be coming into play. Tuesday, Wednesday, Tuesday's my pick day of the week, but that dryer comes plunging down here, and it lingers for a few days. We're going to be in that comfortable zone as far as humidity is concerned. It goes up a little bit as we get into Friday. But typically this time of year, we start getting some refreshing air masses, and this is going to be nice. There you see the showers that are pulling away just now exiting the area

and continues to move away. This is not rain out here, but we do have so a lot of cloud cover still at this hour. We'll get up around 90 or so. We'll get breaks in the clouds. I'll keep that little tiny one in five chance at a isolated shower going, but generally I think we're going to be quiet. Even predictor trying to show a little tiny shower popping up, but the line share is going to be well out to the east of getting a shower, even a thunder shower along the coast. 76 and the at North Hills right now. The dew point at 74. A lot of humidity in the air. 79 in the Goldsboro, 76 in the Silas City and Southern Pines at 77. Now the dew points are still high and during the day tomorrow, they'll be elevated to the 60s to near 70.

But I want you to look here. This is by the time we get to the evening. This is a push of drier air that comes in. And by Tuesday morning, we could have dew points in the upper 40s to around 50. That is refreshing. So Tuesday morning, make some plans to get out early for the that walk. It'll feel amazing. For the Panthers today, it'll be hot. Temperatures getting up to 90 or so by the fourth quarter as they take on Chicago. Should be a really good game there. And there's that front as it pushes through during the later hours tomorrow. Maybe a sprinkle or two. I can't rule out an isolated shower, but the chance is really low. But that opens the door to cooler air that's going to come in north of here. It's going to be in the 70s for highs. So really kind of some nice refreshing air coming our way. 80s in the mountains with the exception. of Banner Elk in the mid-70s. Watch for a few showers today. A lot of it's going to be off the coast, though, if you're heading out there to the beaches.

So not a washout by any stretch. 80s to near 90 with a sun cloud mix this afternoon. Again, a tiny little chance at an afternoon shower. 60th to near 70, fair skies for you tonight. And then tomorrow one more hot day, about 91. That's our transition day. I'll keep that tiny little chance at a shower in. Low humidity, Tuesday, Wednesday looks great.

Lowes in the outlying areas will be in the mid-50s. That'll be pleasant. A little hotter, though, as we finish the work week. All right, Steve, thank you. You might want to put a little bit more of heaven your step for your afternoon walk, even if you don't reach 10,000 steps. but a new study finds that how fast you walk is also important. ABC's Jory Benajal explains. how it could help you live longer. A new study shows that something we do every single day can actually help lower the risk of early death. It's walking, and researchers say the sweet spot maybe 30 minutes a day. In the study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine,

65,000 people with an average age of 61 were activity trackers for about a week. Those who walked for at least 30 minutes a day at a rapid pace had a lower risk of early death. It was found to have a similar benefit to those that walked longer, but at a slower pace. Overall, researchers found that walking up to 10,000 steps a day had some of the lowest

risk of early death. The CDC says that physical activity won't just help you live longer, but can also reduce your risk of serious health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and even some cancers. Getting enough physical activity could prevent one in every 12 cases of diabetes and one in every 15 cases of heart disease. Federal data shows that about only one in four American adults meet the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity per week. So bottom line, doctors say what matters most is to just get moving.

Uri Benijad, ABC News, New York. Coming off, with just 51 days until the midterm elections, the North Carolina Senate race is in the national spotlight. The high-profile visit happening this week. And school's bus safety, the push to add more cameras to buses in Wade County in an effort to ticket drivers who fail to stop. And details on a new TSA program that lets you meet your family and friends at the gate, just like the old days. And as we had to break right now, here goes a live look into downtown Durham. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. It is 9.30. Here goes a live look into the downtown of the Bull City and see some of those clouds there. All right. Well, good morning, Carolina. It's Sunday, September 13th. I'm Bianca Holman. You're watching eyewitness news right now on ABC11.

And wherever you stream, the details of all the top stories are. just ahead. But first we're going to check in with meteorologist Steve Stewart. We got rain on and on today. We still got some clouds left up there in Durham. It's kind of gray outside right now. Yeah, it'll get brighter later on today. But it's going to be steamy too. The humidity is not going away just yet. But it will. Just be patient. That's coming as we get into tomorrow night. And in early Tuesday morning, but the clouds are with us now still a little dampen spots out there this morning after last night's rain. And we had in many areas. And I'll show you where the heavier rain was. Still getting up around 90 or so. And it's going to feel. like at least mid 90s today. Got a little bit of rain yesterday, about 1,300 said R2U. But look at the areas that really desperately needed the rain farther north up around the Virginia border. Got it.

And that includes person, Granville County, Doppler estimates there of 1 to 2 inches and a few areas potentially there up around 3 inches of rainfall quite as soaking. Lesser amounts farther south. We had pockets of some decent rain there where we got upwards a half an inch of rainfall. That's what's left of the showers moving on out now.

So again, a little damp in a couple of spots. But the rain is moving away. This is not rain out there. Don't worry about that. But we still have a lot of clouds that'll start breaking apart. We'll get a sun cloud mix this afternoon. Feels like temperatures mid-90s, maybe upper 90s in spots. So a good way to beat the heat. Maybe head out to the lake for today. And you can see predictor shows some breaks in the clouds. Still tries to show a stray shower. We can't rule that out. But the chances are one in five. Any location today. Better chances farther east. 76 into North Hills. The dew point is 74 with a West Breeze at about 5, 10 miles an hour, 77 Lewisburg, 77 Irwin, and Fayetteville's at 78 degrees. This is it for the Bulls. Last home game of the regular season as they take on the sounds. 86 degrees there at 1 o'clock, 87 by the time you head home and rather humid fan appreciation day for today. All right. See in a moment, Steve. Wait County School Leaders, looking to make changes next year that could impact where thousands of of kids go to school. The district is looking to address overcrowding issues and other concerns by rebalancing students across the district. And so district leaders say growth in certain areas is stabilizing, allowing for a shift in focus from new construction to renovations at older buildings. But some parents, they say it's kind of the impact on their kids. You get nervous. You don't want your kids to move and change and you've gotten into a rhythm with that school and that administration. And so, you know, it's a big,

change. And so again, you can share that feedback if you're a family about that proposal. You can submit them online or attend one of the upcoming meetings. Meanwhile, Wake County School leaders are looking for ways to make it safer for students getting on and off the bus. The facilities committee discussed expanding stop-arm cameras across the fleet. ABC 11, Cindy Bay takes a look at the potential impact. Weight County Schools currently have a limited number of stop-arm cameras. So bus drivers often have to report violations. The proposed system would automate that process with law enforcement reviewing video and issuing civil penalties.

All the bus have stopped arms, but they may not have a stop on camera to capture the violation. And the goal is to have it all? Correct, on all buses. Stop armed cameras can capture key evidence, including the car, license plate, location, and time of the violation. Wake County Schools transport more than 88,000 students. This presentation shows the number of violations reported in Wake County in just one day.

The northern area is a hotspot with one of the highest volumes of violations over the five-year period. School leaders say the true number could be higher because not every violation is captured. In current day, we had 360. That's over 10% of those illegal passes that we collect for the state. Even though we might have 140 violations in 2022, that doesn't mean, 140 tickets were issued. In fact, probably very, very few were. School leaders expect to have more details by December on how the system would work. They say it could be in place within the next year. And Carrie, Cindy Bay.

President Donald Trump coming to North Carolina next Wednesday to campaign for Michael Wattley, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. Trump will speak at the Gastonia Municipal Airport at 7 p.m. Wattley is facing former Governor Roy Cooper in the closely watched race. Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump plans to visit North Carolina on Tuesday one day ahead of her husband's

trip. According to the White House, the First Lady plans to visit Ash County to promote community resilience after Hurricane Helene. She'll also discuss education technology in schools. Well, you can be part of history at Raleigh's new Red Hat Amphitheater. The music venue planning to create a time capsule containing mementals from the original amphitheater. It'll have things like a piece of the banner from the side of the stage, news clippings from the 16 years at its present location. Red Hat Amplet Theater is inviting the community to contribute. You can submit your ideas on the venues website. Well, September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and suicide remains one of the urgent challenges for our men and

women in the military. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says 17 veterans died by suicide every day. In today's health check, we hear from one soldier about their story. Our Barbara Gibbs shares the message that she wants veterans to hear. As a young soldier, Chante Franco says she felt life wasn't worth living. At the time, she didn't know she was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. I also wasn't trying to find support because I felt as if I would be burdening others. Franco says she survived two attempts to end her own life, and even then she couldn't see a future. It wasn't until a neighbor noticed something was off that she finally found the will to relieve herself of that weight she'd been carrying for years. You can't address

the problem without talking about the problem in its entirety. Warning signs that someone may be considering suicide can include withdrawing from family, friends, or activities, giving away prized possessions, engaging in reckless behavior, increasing use of alcohol or other substances, neglecting personal care, significant changes in behavior, or talking about feeling trapped, like you're a burden or don't have a purpose. I still have those intrusive thoughts. But Franco says the Wounded Warrior Project helped her to recognize that in those moments, she needed to connect with someone else, and she hopes other struggling veterans do the same. Now I am thriving. I am struggling well, and I'm actively building a life worth living,

But that doesn't always mean it's glitter and rainbows. That's something to accept. Barbara Gibbs, ABC 11, eyewitness news. Well, you now have more places to go to roll up your sleeve. Wegmans is offering flu shots, adults, seniors, and children can stop by the grocery stores

pharmacy for the latest vaccine. They're being administered at all Wegman's locations. The CDC recommends everyone six months of age and older get a flu shot. Well, if you are counting, some of you are not. But there are just 104 days until Christmas. A look ahead at how much retailers are expecting you to spend. And a historic black community when Raleigh was deeply segregated in the 50s and 60s could soon be added to a national registry. But first, I check outside, Steve.

Speaking of hot at the NFL season kicking off today. A lot of games on the docket. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11. I Witness News. Hey, good morning, everyone. Little damp out there in a few areas, but the rain has pretty much moved out. And with the exception of a spot, he's sure. We're looking pretty dry today. Just going to be hot out there. Temperatures getting up around 90 or so. They see the showers pulling out. Here's what's left of them out of our viewing area right now. You might get a little stray shower that kind of moves on by, but don't expect much as we go throughout the rest of the day today. Feels like numbers will be in those mid-90s, maybe even some upper 90s.

Going to be hot this afternoon. Maybe head to the pool to find some relief if you're going to be outside. It's muggy 76. DuPont at 74 with the west of southwesternly breeze. Widespread temperatures, mid- Upper 70s and spots, 80 already in Goldsboro. Heading out this evening, maybe going to the concert there at Walnut Creek, 86 degrees around start time, getting down to 79 under fair skies by the time you're going to be heading on home. Rain up in New York this morning should be good for the game there tonight. Orlando 91, same thing Atlanta. Dallas is hot. Chicago gets a couple of showers.

Had some delays early this morning. Still have them. JFK, Philly now got some delays as well. pack your patients there. The other major hubs are looking okay. Got you seven to eight in just a few minutes, Bianca. All right. Things backing up up there in New York and Philly. Well, now that back to school shopping season is done, retailers are already looking ahead to the holidays trying to make a buck. Economists are predicting holiday sales could grow as much as 4.8% this year. That would translate into retail sales of around $1.7 trillion dollars. A piece of Raleigh history, one step

closer to national recognition. The city's Historic Development Commission voting to recommend the Biltmore Hills neighborhood spot for a, for a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. When Raleigh was deeply segregated

in the 50s and 60s, Biltmore Hills opened the door for black home ownership and the street names there tell a story all their own a tribute to black excellence. Names like Fitzgerald honoring the jazz legend

Ella Fitzgerald and Campanella Lane named for baseball pioneer Roy Campanella. Now the National Park Service will have the final say on whether Biltmore Hills earns its place in history. Relaxing the rules, the change is happening at airports 25 years after the September 11 terror attacks. Listen to this, you may soon be allowed to take your water bottle through the airport security or walk a loved one to their gate to say goodbye. And as we head to break here goes alive looking to downtown Raleigh. We are Local News. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. Some major changes could be coming to airports across the country.

The TSA allowing people to pass through checkpoints without a plane ticket. The TSA also considering a policy change that may allow some travelers to bring balls of water through security. ABC's Michelle Frensen has the details. Travelers have grown frustrated with long waits at airport security checkpoints in recent years. And now the TSA says it may have the answer to streamline some of those choke points with the rollout of new pre-checked lanes at airports outfitted with us. updated security features. TSA administrator David Cummins says the changes focus

on three priorities. We want to modernize those checkpoints. We want to elevate the travelers experience. And we want to harden our transportation networks against emerging threats like cyber and drones. The pre-check lanes will have eGates that use facial comparison technology that won't require passengers to show their IDs and boarding

passes, along with 3D scanners for luggage. It could take a year to get all 400 pre-check lanes up and running around the country. The TSA is also weighing whether pre-check passengers can carry water bottles through security and they hope to expand their new Gateside program to more than 400 airports. Introduced this past year it allows non-ticket holders to go through security something that has been heavily restricted since 9-11. Our customers have been asking hey why can't we accompany our elderly family member through a security

checkpoint. Why can't we greet our teenage son when they get off their plane? And so this is something that we haven't had really for 25 years. Gateside access is only available to those with pre-check and known traveler numbers. You also have to apply online for a pass at least one day ahead of time before you go to the airport. Very different from what we've experienced overnight. All that rain, Steve.

Yeah, listen, it depends on where you are, but like RDU got a few, maybe 1,300's, I think, and that's it. But north of here really picked up some decent amount of rainfall. 1, 2 inches, a few areas closer to 3 inches, and those are the areas that are really dry up around the Virginia borders. So some good, healthy rainforests.

Still damp in a few areas. If you're taking a walk this morning, it's going to be a sultry afternoon. Sh showers have moved on out now. Still hot tomorrow. There's a dry front coming in later in the day. Maybe we squeeze out an isolated shower, but once the front moves to our south, that opens the door to some refreshing air. We'll be cooler, but even more importantly, really low humidity comes into play as we get in Tuesday and Wednesday. That dryer pushes in here, and it hangs out for a few days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, it's going to be in the comfortable zone. Temperatures will still be in the 80s, but it's going to feel fantastic. There's the last of the showers moving on out, and we're still. starting to see some breaks in the clouds here and there. The triad has sunshine right now. And we'll see some of that clearing pushing in a little bit later on.

But for now, we are dealing with a lot of cloud cover. Heading out and about today, we'll get a sun cloud mixed through the afternoon. Numbers will get up around 90, but humidity stays high. So it feels like temperatures at least in the mid-90s. And our model tries to squeeze out a stray little shower here and there. But generally speaking, it's going to be dry now that the showers have moved off to our east. 76 into North Hills with a west breeze at seven miles an hour. Dew points in the mid-70s, widespread mid-70s, upper 70s and spots in Goldsboro now at 80 degrees.

Dew points are high. I'm going to go ahead and play this through. It'll still be a humid day tomorrow. But by tomorrow late in the day, notice someone changes that drier air starts to punch in. And then by early Tuesday morning, we could have dew points near 50. That is going to feel amazing. So make some plans to get that Tuesday morning walk in. For the Panthers game, it'll be hot getting up to 90 by the fourth quarter. Weather shouldn't be an issue otherwise, but it's going to be humid there as well.

So that could impact the players. Front's going to settle to the south as we go into our Monday. Again, this opens a door to that dryer, more refreshing air. As we go into Tuesday, it should be a gorgeous day, really, with that flow coming here from the northeast and the drier air hangs out for a few days. Mountains looking good today for heading in that direction. Not a wash out of the beaches. There'll be some scattered showers around.

Temperature is likely going to be in the 80s. Most of the rain is probably off the coast. 80s to near 90 today. Hot humid afternoon will be with us. And then tonight, 60s to near 70s should be in the lower to middle 60s, so it's warm and humid overnight. One more hot one, and then some changes are coming into play. Tuesday and Wednesday look fantastic.

Humidity crashes. It'll be really nice. Heating up, though, as we finish the work week, low 90s by Friday. All right, Steve, thank you. The director of ABC's hit show Abbott Elementary, a home run from behind the camera ahead of this year's Emmy Awards. The time now, 954 on this Sunday morning. The Emmy nominated director of Abbott Elementary reveals his most challenging episode to film.

It took place live during a major league baseball game. This is his ninth Emmy nomination, but he's never won. While Abbott Elementary is up for seven nods for season five, Alicia Vitorelli takes us behind the scenes. It was crazy. In my career, that was the most challenging episode I think I've ever done. Director Randall Einhorn is talking about the groundbreaking Abbott Elementary Season 5 episode called Ballgame. And, as you know, most of it was filmed during an actual ball game at Citizens Bank Park. Just winging it, flying at by the seat of our pants, hustling.

August 28th, 2025, the Phillies versus the Braves. Go Phillies! And, well, for a scripted TV show, there's one thing. Eynhorne couldn't script. Kyle Schwabers four home runs. I mean, he put on quite a show for Abbott Elementary. You know, I asked him, I said, did you do that for

us? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did him. Thank you very much. Kyle Swarber. The day before the game, they brought hundreds of extras into the ballpark to shoot some of the core scenes. But on Game Day, they were also joined by

thousands of real Phillies fans. in the stands. That was a real taste of Philly and real taste of Philly sport life. It was fantastic. I had a blast. And Einhorn had quite a feat to pull off, shooting the rest of the episode with the cast and crew embedded in the crowd, reacting in real time.

So, I mean, there's a moment that you see quite clearly on Shirley leaves Ralph's face, and you know that it's Kyle's just hit his, like, third or fourth home run. She's like, yeah, eyes. And it was just, it was a Philly fan. That's our girl. Abbott Elementary is up for seven Emmys. If he wins for directing, this would mark a first for Einhorn. It's nice to have the recognition because a lot of planning, a lot of work went into it.
