This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. Hey, good morning, Carolina. I'm Akila Davis and for Bianca Holman. It's Saturday, September 19th. This morning on eyewitness news, your first alert to some spotty showers when you could meet the umbrella today as you kick off the weekend. And two racially motivated incidents leaving UNC Chapel Hill students on edge. The local congresswoman stepping in, drawing attention to student safety. And calls for more affordable housing, the nonprofit in Wake County highlighting the need for hundreds of more units. But let's check in with First Alert meteorologist Kim Diener.

Kim, I hadn't seen you in a while. It's so good to work with you this morning. It is so nice to work with you, too, Akela. Good morning. Good morning, everyone. We have a great weekend on tap. Definitely a warm weekend, even though falls bright around the corner, and we'll talk about some fall like weather in just a moment. But let's talk about the fact that you're waking up to mostly cloudy skies.

Even though that camera view a few moments ago did show a little bit of sunshine out there. So the more sunshine we see, better chance of seeing those showers and thunderstorms later on this afternoon. Right now what rain we do see is pushed out of our area into the eastern part of North Carolina. Now that chance of rains in the forecast, our radar showing again the rain in the eastern part of North Carolina. This is just radar noise. Certainly no precipitation falling across the area at the moment. There is a chance we'll see that, though, today. So keep the umbrella handy.

We'll see a high of about 84 degrees. That feels like factor's going to be much higher. Our dew points are high. It's just muggy outside. But compared to yesterday's in 95, today's going to be a whole lot nicer than that. A great day to spend some time outdoors. We need the rain.

We have only seen a little over an inch of rain so far this year. We're about two inches below where we should be. So the fact that we have rain in the forecast is good news. It's liquid gold this time of year with the drought being persistent. We see the best chance of those rain showers Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Some of those storms could be strong to severe. And we're going to really talk about the fact that fall is in the forecast. Now, for the day-to-day, you can go ahead and enjoy that afternoon of being out on the lake and just having a good time.

Right now, temperatures are in the 70s across the area, closing in on 80 in some locations. So just keep in mind it's going to be a warm and muggy day. I'll have your forecast coming up. Just a moment. Kim, thanks. This morning we're working to learn if charges will be filed against a driver hit, as a driver hit a biker in East Raleigh. It happened late last night near the corner of New Bern Avenue and Treywick Road.

The bicyclist was taken to make wet and it's expected to be okay. Raleigh Police are now investigating. Stay with us for more updates. And after two racially motivated incidents at UNC Chapel Hill, Triangle Congresswoman Valerie Fushi, now stepping in. The first incident happened at the end of August when police say Keegan Wilson disturbed black students and made racially charged threats. The other happened days earlier when Taiwanese students were racially harassed by a group

of white men during a campus tour. Our Jemis Price talked to students who want to know what's being done to make sure they are safe. Our campus shouldn't be like this. Chow Zhang Lu is still trying to find the words after he says he was racially harassed on campus. This is really... tough to process for me.

We shouldn't tolerate racial harassment on our campus. Full stop. It happened on August 29th after a welcome party hosted by the UNC, Taiwanese Student Association. Following the party, a group of students went on a tour of the campus and it brought him here. I spoke to some of those students Friday night who were on the tour and they said what happened next has rattled

international students on campus. We passed this alley. There is five hundred. six male and white male that appears to be like undergrad student that walk packs us and then as they walk back us they try to mimic the monkey like so they put their hands on the ground and work towards us that never comes through my mind that someone will do this kind of harassment on our campus the students say they contacted the university compliance office and UNC police they

were told there is video of the ordeal. Police has a footage. So we are in the limbo like, OK, our police still working on it. Then it's hard for us to first try to figure out what kind of resources that we can use. This is one of two racially charged incidents that happened on campus this semester. The other involved black students who were harassed at Green Law Hall. Now U.S. Congresswoman Valerie Fushi is calling on the university chancellor Lee Roberts to address the problem. problems. Fushi sent this letter where she asked directly, how is your administration working

to make sure students, particularly students of color, feel safe on campus? It's a question students are also asking. We wish we can have a more open protocol on how you see you deal with this kind of hate harassment incident on campus. Denise Price with that report. A university spokesperson sent a statement to eyewitness news that says protecting the safety and well-being of our campus community remains a critical priority. UNC says it has also received Congresswoman Fushi's letter and appreciates her engagement. The UNC Chappell Hill graduate student charged with killing a professor on campus

is not guilty by reason of insanity. Tiley Shee appeared in Orange County Court yesterday where two doctors testified about she's mental state before, during, and after the shooting. They describe paranoia, hallucinization, hallucinizations, and a delusional belief system, saying she could not understand the wrongfulness of his actions. He will involuntarily be committed to a state hospital for an infinite period. And a Wake County family is mourning after their young soldier died this week during a training exercise in Texas. The Army says private first class Ethan Brewer passed away Monday when his hunger.

Humvee rolled over. Brewer graduated from Apex High School in 2025 before joining the Army as a medic. He started serving at Port Hood earlier this year. Military experts say they've seen an uptick in injuries during training exercises. It actually does surprise me for that type of vehicle. Usually I've seen other kind of vehicles roll over, but a Humvee is so low and wide. We actually have one. And I know that top that goes on the medic vehicles, you know, depending on those rate of speed and how they cut the wheel.

Another soldier was injured during the rollover and has been released from the hospital. Army officials say they are investigating this incident. And happening today a call for more affordable housing in Wake County. The organization, One Wake, is launching its equity campaign, bringing together residents, faith leaders, and elected officials, all with the goal of addressing what they call a housing crisis. They say 67,000 more units are needed to meet demand. Today's event starts at 1 at the St. Francis of a Cece Church in Raleigh. And today a family and community summit begins in Wake County Schools, the district holding a series of discussions,

connecting the community with resources and building relationships to support student success. It starts at 10 at Leesville Road High School. And the maternity fair at Fort Bragg today, helping new and expecting mothers. Plus, a closer look at Chapel Hill, the community's event for families today. And later, which grocery store has the best deals, the cost analysis from our friends at the News and Observer. But first, good morning, Kim. Good morning, Akila. Good morning, everyone.

The radar is seeing, the viewing area, not finding any rain. We do have a chance of rain in the forecast. We'll talk a little bit more about that coming up. But regardless of whether you're spending the weekend at the beach in the central part of the state or in the mountains, the only place you're going to see highs in the 70s today, that's Boone. That's going to change in our forecast. I'll explain more on the other side of this break, so don't go away. This is First Alert Weather from ABC 11 eyewitness news.

Good morning, everyone. I'm meteorologist Kim Deeter, filling in for Steve Stewart this morning. You will need to keep the umbrella with you, but certainly today is not going to be a washout. Not everyone is going to see a shower or thunderstorm. Best chance of seeing those showers and storms are going to be south and west of the triangle. But with more sunshine, we see the odds go a little bit higher for us here in the central part of the state as well. A spotty shower or two with a high of 84 degrees. Partly cloudy for tomorrow a little bit warmer with temperatures in the upper 80s.

Certainly going to feel like it's in the 90s with those dew points being high. Scattered showers and storms, a very unsettled weather pattern starts our forecast on Monday. Right now you can see we have a few showers associated with the front that's on its way into our area. North in Virginia, the scattered showers we saw moved through overnight. That's now pushed into the eastern part of North Carolina. You can see throughout the day to day will continue to build on those temperatures. popping out around 84 degrees across the area. The more sunshine we see,

which we're already seeing a little bit of sunshine right now, that's gonna up those temperatures just a bit. It's already warm, 76 in Raleigh, 75 in Durham, 73 in Sanford and 75 in Fayetteville. It feels muggy outside. Headed to Duke's home game today, kickoff temperatures at about 82 degrees. Again, that mix of clouds and sunshine.

After the games over, the temperature will be 80 degrees. So it is gonna be a nice day. If you're flying across the nation today, you see we have these guys scattered showers all the way up through Minneapolis, all the way into Seattle. But not seeing any major delays with these storms. If you're headed out of Raleigh this morning right now, the only red light we have is if you're headed out to Chicago or Chicago O'Hare, that's a 90-minute delay.

Not sure what's causing that, but all other flights seem to be on time heading out of RDE this morning. Akila. Kim, thanks. Today, Fort Bragg is helping new and expecting mothers. The fall maternity fair and blood drive is happening at Womack Army Medical Center. There will be guided labor and delivery tours, newborn care, and infant massage demonstrations. It's happening from 10 until 3 today on post. Also happening today, it's Chapel Hill Day in Orange County.

The town is hosting a community event, allowing families to meet town staff, see cool demonstrations, and get behind-the-scenes tours. The event is from 10 to 1 today at several sites along Millhouse Road. There's even a free shuttle from Eubanks Park. You can find more information. on the town's website. All right, getting more voters to the polls, the rally today to boost voter turnout for midterms. Plus spoken word and community, the intimate gathering helping people move through trauma. And supporting those with Alzheimer's disease, the community walked today in the sandhills.

We are local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now. And now to your voice, your boat, and a new effort to get people to the polls. William Barber kicking off the North Carolina leg of his 100-day voter mobilization tour. The goal is to get 5 million low-wage and infrequent voters to cast ballots, particularly in the South and Battleground states. Today's rally starts at 7 at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Fayville. In meantime, Vice President J.D. Vance is traveling to North Carolina Monday. He's holding a rally for Republican candidates in Greensboro, hoping to drum up support for them ahead of the November midterm election.

Vance's event starts at 11 Monday at the Curie Convention Center. People who want to attend need to register in advance. And a Raleigh community is coming together using poetry as a way of helping people heal from trauma. Eyewitness news was that last night's event in the Washington Terrace neighborhood as people gathered around a makeshift stage. One by one, people who have survived shootings, prison, addiction, and abuse stood up and told the room what they've been through. We talked to a community advocate who helps organize events like this. I want people to know that there is a place that they can come and don't have to be shy about the trauma that they've been through.

The thing about trauma is, you know, healing becomes, comes with conversation. Healing comes with getting it out. She says these spoken word nides help people leave their burdens on stage and find community in an unlikely place. place. All right happening today, the inaugural Bull City Band Expo is taking place in Durham. It's happening from 245 to 5.30 at Jordan High School. Marching bands from northern, Hillside, Riverside, Southern, and Jordan High Schools will perform. Atmission is just $10 for adults, $8 for educators, and $5 for students. There will be concessions, raffles, and of course, great music from the bands. And if you were planning to head out to the Cash Money No Limit Tour at Lenovo Center today,

you might want to make other plans. The show has been postponed to Sunday, November 8th. Lenovo Center apologizing on its website, citing an unavoidable schedule change. Fans will have to wait just a little longer to see Master P, Birdman, Juvenile, and others live in Rale. All right, millions of families are affected by Alzheimer's disease, and you can help bring hope and support to those faithful. this journey. Kim, a decent day for a walk. A decent day for a walk. Absolutely. The fact that we're seeing a lot more sunshine than I I expected this early in the morning, does increase our chance to see a few scattered showers later on this afternoon. So I'd keep the umbrella handy. This is a live look at downtown Raleigh, and we're seeing the same thing here. Starting to see those skies clear a little bit. So the cloud cover has to stay in place for that atmosphere to stay stable enough not to see those showers pop up when the front moves through. So we'll continue to watch that. So here are the headlines for the next couple of days.

Spotty showers for today, but a brighter day tomorrow. And then we need the rain. It looks like the first half of next week. we'll see a decent chance of some rain. And then we turn a corner, even if it's just for a short period of time, cooler next week. Wait till you see those temperatures. Now here's a look at the forecast at highs over the next couple of days. Today, tomorrow, and the next day, temperatures mainly in the mid-to-upper 80s with that sunshine, that humidity. It's just still going to feel like summer. And then we become a little bit more unsettled as we move into Monday,

late Monday, Tuesday, into Wednesday, and then even into Thursday, you see these temperatures in the 70s. I think the peak day or the best day, definitely, of the day. the next seven is going to be Friday with 76 as a high in a mix of clouds and sunshine. So the potential rainfall are really decent for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with some of those times at 70 percent. So I'm hoping all of us get a good shot of some much-needed rain. We do have a front that's moving through the area, and that front is going to be what is the instability in the atmosphere. It's going to be what starts those showers and thunderstorms going. Best chance of seeing that, though, south and west of the triangle. But again, we're seeing a lot

more sunshine already this morning, so that's going to keep the atmosphere unstable. Not picking up any rain showers in our viewing area anyway, that's just a lot of radar noise, and it will begin to dissipate as we start to see the sun get higher in the sky. Throughout the day-to-day, you can expect temperatures to climb into the 80s. It's definitely going to feel like summer with those humidity levels as well. Predictor does bring a few scattered showers, getting a little more aggressive with those showers each run. So I think we're going to see one or two showers throughout the day-to-day, but certainly

not a washout and no reason to cancel any. sort of outdoor plans. Just be prepared, keep the umbrella handy. And then we have a front moving through the area as we head into the latter part of the day on Monday. Already warm, though, outside. Temperatures are in the 70s, those humidity levels, making it feel much more like it's in the 80s. For this evening, you can do an outdoor cookout, you can do a walk with the dog. Whatever your plans for this evening, the weather should cooperate pretty nicely. Again, you're going to dodge a shower or two somewhere in the viewing area so keep the umbrella handy, but again no reason to cancel any outdoor activities.

Here's that frontal system that's going to slip through the state during the day to day. That's going to increase our chance of shower activity. High pressure will dominate off to our west, and we keep that chance of showers in the forecast as we start into the work week. Here's a look at that seven-day forecast, 84 for today. Tomorrow, 87, 89 to becoming unsettled with scattered storms Monday. Fall arrives on Tuesday. Wednesday, we keep showers and storms in the forecast. It's not really going to feel like a great fall until Friday,

but I will take days, daytime highs in the 70s, and morning lows in the 50s any time over what we've seen all summer long, Keeler. All right, Kim, thank you. Absolutely. Hey, you recently went out to find the best places to save money while grocery shopping. went to 12 different grocery stores, checking prices on 30 common items. Take us through what you found. So basically we found that Aldi is the cheapest grocery store by a pretty big margin about $10. Next is Liddle and then Walmart. And so basically we took 15 generic brand items and then 15 name brands. And of course, Aldi does not have those name brands.

But, you know, they are a cheaper alternative if you're looking for something. Aldi winning by a mile. Autumn, we know a lot of people are struggling with the higher cost of living right now. What are shoppers in Raleigh saying about today's grocery store prices? I mean, they're saying it's too expensive, too high, insane. I mean, a lot of people are feeding children as well. But even two-parent or two-person households are really struggling and, you know, putting things back on the counter if the price is too high, foregoing vegetables and fruits for having a protein in the house.

It's really people who are, you know, foregoing fun nights out or, you know, even healthier alternatives just to make ends meet. Yeah, people making some tough choices right now. What's your advice for helping shoppers unlock even more deals? Well, I would say sign up for all the free memberships you can. So many stores, Wegmans, Food Lion, you know, they all have memberships so you can unlock more savings. I'd also say a lot of these stores come out with Wagon's.

weekly ads on Wednesdays. Target is the only one who's special and comes out on Sunday, but those ads really do let you know what's going on sale and when before they sell out. So definitely look for those when you go and you can unlock as much savings as possible. Definitely pulling a circular on the way in the door. It's great insight, Autumn Coleman. Good morning, Carolina.

It's Saturday, September 19th. I'm Akela Davis and for Bianca Holman. You're watching eyewitness news now on ABC 11 and wherever you stream. The top stories in all the day's news just ahead. But first, let's check in with meteorologist Kim Diener. Kim, a chance of rain today. A chance of rain today. It's just going to be a day where we see a lot more cloud cover, which will make it feel a little cooler.

That's nice. But that chance of rain is in the forecast. So we want to keep the umbrella handy, but it's certainly not going to be a washout. I wouldn't cancel any outdoor plans. The one showers that have persisted pretty much all morning long remain out of our viewing area. We are dry right now across central North Carolina. That won't remain the case. What you see on radar right now, this is just radar noise.

That will eventually die down as we move throughout the morning, but it's certainly not precipitation. We are going to see a mix of clouds and sunshine today, though, a high of about 84 degrees, but that feels like factor is going to make it feel much closer to night. It is going to be muggy today. Our winds are out of the south between 5 and 10 miles an hour. Just a typical summer day. However, it's going to be a lot nicer than it was yesterday with a high of 95 degrees. We average 84 this time of year. We've only had just a little over an inch of rain this month, so we really need the rain. We're about two inches below where we should be for the month. So that's going to work out in our favor with the rain chances. As we head into this work week, we have a good chance of rain Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. If you're planning any outdoor activity today, again, keep the umbrella handy. Have a rain plan just in case you have to stop for a little bit as that rain moves through. This is a live look outside with our Pendo Cam. You see more blue skies than clouds, and that does increase our chance of showers and storms later on today.

Temperatures right now in the 70s, it feels very muggy, but things are changing. We're going to feel a little bit like autumn when I show you the seven-day forecast, and I'll talk about that more in just a few minutes, Akila. Kim sounds good. Thank you. Durham's new police chief has been official. sworn in. Chief Stephanie Martins took her oath of office yesterday at the Deepak. She honored the lives of everyone killed in Durham this year by saying their names. And she had a special message for Durham residents as she moves into her new role. To the community of Durham, you have welcomed me with open arms. I truly believe that the Lord has prepared me for such a time as this. This city, this community, it's vibrant. Chief Martyr says she chose Friday for her swearing-in ceremony because it was her son

Jackson's 20th birthday. She's DPD's 17th Chief and fourth female chief. All right, love it or hated, AI is here to stay and it's creeping into more parts of our lives every day. So, One Way County School is teaching students how to ride the wave. Lauren Johnson shows us how Wake Tech is preparing kids for a future that's already here. And then it will run an analysis based on that information. I think it's impacted my career decisions quite a bit.

I mean, it's something you really need to look forward towards the future. Like, will my career actually be there when I graduate? AI is creeping into almost every job. That's why at Wake Tech, they're looking to thread AI into the curriculum of every discipline. Artificial intelligence is a ubiquitous technology. It's not something that just a few people use, a technology that is a, You know, we're not creating a new AI program, although we have many AI courses, but we are attempting to thread throughout the different programs at Wake Tech.

Last year at Wake Tech, we had 76,000 total students, half that many degree students. But if you look, we had students across 33 disciplines take some type of AI course. Trim that part away. Okay. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I see it. These architecture students are learning how to use AI in their process. They, along with their professors, realize ignoring the changes coming to the job market, is not preparing for the future.

You know, you don't want to be 100% dependent on AI, but you know, you don't want to outright just refuse it either because it is a tool that can help you. Professors are trying to take a more active approach in showing students how to use AI as a tool to improve their work. One of these new strategies and design and techniques and tools and software that I need to know that other people don't know, And that makes them an even stronger candidate for working in a design office. Careers like architecture have gone through a lot of changes. Massive offices filled with mechanical pencils and paper are replaced by desktop computers and CAD programs. While artificial intelligence is a huge disruptor, there are still lessons from the past, and even parts of the industry are coming to Wake Tech to learn from the students themselves.

We had an auto desk, which is the people who own auto. AutoCAD, Revit, and a lot of programs that we use within our program come in and answer a lot of questions about how they're tackling the AI problem or how they're integrating it with their systems. And it was really eye-opening to see how the people who are actually making the software that we're using are starting to tackle that question. That's easier. President Scott Rawl says he hears a lot of concerns about artificial intelligence, but he feels the most important thing to do in higher education is to learn how to ride the weight. What I do think is we want our students at Wake Tech to be riding on the top of that wave, not pulled over by the wave. And so what we have to do as a jobs-focused college is we have to be very flexible, which is our nature. There are going to be some program areas that have to be shifted.

From baking to biotech, there is an AI aspect of it that has to be threaded into those programs. Lauren Johnson with that report. President Rawls says it's important to not just create AI users, but AI problem solvers because he believes that artificial intelligence can be a tool and also a crutch. Turning now to the war in Iran and the price tag that's adding up, the Pentagon telling Congress it spent more than $45 billion with most of the money going toward ammissions. The Congressional Budget Office projects the war will cost $2 to $3 billion every month. I knew this morning, hundreds gathering in the nation's capital protesting President Trump's handling of the Kennedy Center. They chan it, joined hands, and created a human chain in front of the building. This comes just days after President Trump announced the center's closing after a judge ruled he couldn't put his name on the building. Our winds are out of the south between 5 and 10 miles an hour. So it is going to be muggy and humid today. Now, tomorrow we'll see a little bit more sunshine, temperature. will be a little warmer. Both today and tomorrow are going to feel like we're in the 90s, even though our temperatures are in the 80s. And then on Monday, we start into a very unsettled weather pattern that can bring us some much-needed rain. We have a cold front that's going to flip through the area during the day-to-day. We've seen a few little scattered showers in Virginia associated with that frontal system. But again, as it moves into our area, we have that mix

of clouds and sunshine. The more clouds we have, the more stable our atmosphere will be. The more sunshine we see, the more likelihood we could see a shower or storm. So keep the umbrella a handy. We will climb into the 80s throughout the day to day, which is that 20% chance of showers. We're already warm out there. We're up to 79 right now on Rocky Mount. And 78 in Irwin now, 75 in Fayetteville, 75 in Durham, 76 here in Raleigh. And that is definitely going to make it feel like it's already in the 80s. Now if you're headed to the Duke game for today, temperatures will be 82 at kickoff and 80 after the game. So a pretty nice day for football. If you're traveling across the United States, you are going to run into area.

of problems, especially around Chicago, Denver, with that weather as an issue. And Chicago, we had some problems. Yeah, if you're flying to Chicago this morning, there's a 105-minute delay. Not sure what that is. Probably has nothing to do with weather. However, still, if you are headed in that direction, you may want to call RDE before you go. All right, it's day two of the Southern Ideal Home Show at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. The fall event celebrates North Carolina's barbecue culture and cuisine with a different pit master doing different demonstrations every day. Experts will also be on hand to give advice and guidance about home improvement projects. The show runs through Sunday. Tickets are $12, kids 13 and under, get in free. And happening today, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is holding its annual bugfest. There are more than 100 exhibits, crafts, games, and activities. You can also ask scientists about all things creepycrawley and even try to do.

some bug-filled foods. The 30th annual festival is happening from 10 until 7 in downtown Raleigh. And all right, celebrating Latin American culture, the festival returning to downtown Raleigh this weekend. Plus North Carolina made, the homegrown music festival attracting bands from all over the world. All right, time for our weekly spotlight on the people and products that are North Carolina made. We had to Chapel Hill for a music festival still going after 30 years. 30 years and it's now the longest running progressive rock festival in the world. Joe Brown spent this past Labor Day weekend at Prague Day.

Everybody ready? When we first pulled in to Storybook Farm nestled between Chapel Hill and Carborough over this 31-year-old progressive rock music festival lovingly known as Prague Day, my first question was, what exactly is progressive rock? Frank Zappa once said, well, it's all the stuff that doesn't sound like everything else. And that's really the, that's really kind of still the best thing. the best I think a definition of what it is. Michael Bennett's been attending Prague Day since its founding in 1995 since Peter Renfro moved to this farm, saw the stage and

founded the festival tasking Bennett to design the festival's art. Now Michael runs the show. Did you have any sense in year one that you'd still be out here doing this 30 years later? No no no no. Every year it was kind of you're kind of going hand to mouth. For the first I would say decade when we would end you weren't even sure if there was going to be another one And now Prague Day is the longest continuously running progressive rock music festival in the world. If not a field of dreams, this field has certainly fueled plenty of discovery. Every time I see a band that I'm like, yep, I need to own a lot more of their music. And it's nice to support maybe the smaller bands that don't get some of the exposure that bigger bands do.

John Batima drives down every year from Northern Virginia. And you have been coming here since... 1996, so 30 years. What drew you down at Chapel Hill, North Carolina? You know, at the time, I'd been listening to music like this, but didn't realize there was such a community. John's even pulled out his checkbook to help pay the airfare for international bands to perform here as Prague Day turned into a draw for bands across the globe. I don't have criteria, just take this money and make something amazing happen. From a business standpoint, we have a rep on a good side like, they know we will do what we say we will do.

We will pay them after the gig is over. them after the gig is over. This album, this came out last year. Detroit-based band Discipline played the very first Prague Day. They were right back here this year. Is there something about Chapel Hill that, that, I don't know, helps propel this thing? Maybe it's in the water. I have no idea. I don't know what it is. It's something, maybe it's just, it's special and different. At Storybook Farm, they're still writing the Prague Day story. Something you look forward to every year. And every note feels North Carolina made. It's a big family reunion with great music. Apple Hill, Joel Brown. ABC 11, eyewitness news.

And ABC 11 is marking National Hispanic Heritage Month. It runs from mid-September through mid-October. And one of the largest celebrations is right here in Raleigh, La Fiesta del Pueblo is the triangle's largest and most diverse Latin American cultural festival. The festival has music, dancing, food, art, and activities all celebrating Hispanic heritage. You can join the fun tomorrow in downtown Raleigh. And here's a live look at downtown Carrie. It seems like it'll be a good day tomorrow, Kim, for that festival. It's going to be a great day tomorrow for that festival.

A little warmer than it is today, but, you know, expecting a lot of sunshine highs in the 80s, and it's going to feel like it's in the 90s. Let's look outside. We have a lot of sunshine already today. Now we're looking for more clouds than sunshine throughout the day as a frontal system will move through the area. So the more sun we see, the more likelihood we're going to see those scattered showers and storms. So just keep the umbrella handy.

Spotty showers for today. but a brighter day tomorrow. And then we're going to see the first half of next week, a decent shot of getting some much-needed rain around this area, and then turning a corner just for a little bit, but we are turning the corner, and we are going to see cooler temperatures next week. Actually, very nice temperatures next week.

Now, we need the rain, and it's going to come as we start into Monday, but for the weekend, just a spotty chance here or there during the day-to-day, so don't cancel any plans. Just have a backup plan if you're doing anything outdoors, at least for a short period of time. tomorrow 89 on Monday and then we drop back down into the 70s and Friday we have low humidity. We're waking up with temperatures in the 50s Friday morning and we're only going to see

a high of 76 if that doesn't feel like fall. I don't know what is. It's just going to be short-lived. Here's a look at your chance of rain as we move into the next couple of days. That chance of rain really skyrockets as we head into Monday night, Tuesday and Wednesday and then we keep the chance on Thursday as well. We need the rain. We're about two inches below where we should be this time of year. Now the cold front is that's going to be. impacting our forecast later this afternoon is bringing a few scattered showers in Virginia, but certainly not a lot to talk about. And all of this you see showing up on my radar, that's just radar noise. We're not seeing anything like that in the form of precipitation.

So we've just got those fair weather clouds out there for now. Temperatures climbing into the 80s for highs today will only drop back into the 70s for lows overnight tonight. Predictor with each additional run this morning has been a little bit more bold with the chance of showers, some of those scattered showers and storms. So there is that possible. We see that today, but you see it's just like hit or miss. No one sees a consistent amount of rain all day long and we keep rain out of our forecast until we move into the area Move into late Monday into Tuesday. Here's a look at temperatures. We're almost at 80 degrees across the area Certainly feeling like 80 already if you've been outside this morning. You know it is muggy feeling a whole lot like summer for this evening Anything really goes backdoor activities, you know whatever plans you have for this evening maybe there's an outdoor concert you plan to attend temperatures will drop

into the 70s. It's going to feel like summer, but it's certainly going to be rain-free as we move into the evening. Now, here's that cold front moves through during the day-to-day. Most of that shower activity should be suppressed to the south and west of us, but I'm not ruling out a stray shower here in the triangle as well. Saturday and Sunday, we have both 84 for today, 87 for tomorrow, and then we move into that unsettled weather pattern for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. But look at Friday, partly cloudy, waking up with temperatures in the 50s and only climbing into the 70s. That is a treat from Mother Nature.

We bring fall officially in on Tuesday, but fingers crossed that we've turned the corner as a meteorologist. I know we haven't, but I can still keep my fingers crossed for something, some sort of surprise, right? All right, Kim, thank you. Still ahead, a big day of college football in ABC 11.

We'll have a preview of today's games, including Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford. Triple letter on ABC starts at noon eastern time, Georgia at Arkansas. Dogs haven't played anybody, Kirk. When you include Arkansas, their opponents, one in six, and they've been outscored 295 to 71. We think they're good. You know, speaking of Georgia, but we're not going to learn this weekend against Arkansas. The one thing that is good for Georgia, it is on the road. So at least they get that first opportunity as a team in 26 to go on the road and get a chance to play against an SEC opponent, albeit Arkansas is struggling. Remember,

they have Oklahoma. Georgia has Oklahoma next week at home. Say whatever you want about Oklahoma, to Michigan, they're still a good football team. So it's another game to kind of build some momentum for next week. In 3.30 Eastern time, there's a bit of a redemption motif all over the place this weekend. Alabama lost to Florida State last year. They get them in Tuscaloosa Saturday. I think going back to just last week, I thought Alabama really grew up. You know, they got down to a really difficult start. Their quarterback Keelan and Russell turned the ball over. They're down in a hostile environment. scored 32 unanswered points to take control of that game. Really, I think, grew up as a young team. defense looks a lot better.

Primetime, the return of Lane Kiffin. Enough said. We're here at the Grove. They've been waiting for this game and this opportunity. Now the bad part is you still got to go out and execute. And this is about what happens on the football field, but the buildup is going to be a lot of fun. Which defense plays better containing the quarterback's ability to run is key.

Seeing coaches come back to their old places before, but not quite like this. All right, Kim, let's get a final check of the weather.
