Right now at noon, our first alert to weather team is tracking another round of high temperatures today. It's going to feel like we're in the triple digits. Plus, three people killed and one man is in custody, what we're learning about the suspect facing charges in a Moore County triple murder. This is ABC 11 eyewitness news. And we begin with your first alert to a heat advisory now in effect through 8 o'clock tonight. The dangerous heat expected to continue into the weekend. We're also getting an update on the drought across Central Carolina. Our recent rainfall is easing dry conditions. Chopper 11 over Falls Lake this week. The water supply is now at 89% up from 84% last week. Today's drought monitor showing those improvements.

Thank you for joining us for the news at noon. I'm Barbara Gibbs. Amber Rupenta has the day off today. It is a first alert day here on eyewitness News. We're tracking dangerous heat. There's also a chance for some spotty showers. The main concern, though, is the heat. Let's get the latest from meteorologist Steve Stewart.

Hey, Steve. Hey there, Barbara. I'm a little optimistic right now. Our northern counties, the dew points are in the 60s, and we're seeing that in Wake County now as well. If that doesn't go up, meaning if we don't increase that low level moisture, we're likely not going to get to advisory criteria around the triangle. I think farther south you are, that's kind of wishful thinking. You're likely going to be reaching that advisory criteria with feels like temperatures in that 103 to maybe 107 range.

Outside right now, we're dealing with some passing clouds and some haze in the sky as well. We're going for around 96 today. Feels hotter than that, though, with the humidity in the air. And a stray spotty storm can't be ruled out. Yesterday was 89. That was the pick day of the week. 100 is the record high. Not close to that,

but we could get to those mid-90s today and that rainfall deficit now continues to grow. Spotty little showers out of the mountains, likely not going to hold together. You can see on a visible shot. Some clouds up there. We'll see passing clouds at times and maybe just a stray shower.

They're pretty low chances over the coming days. Saturday evening may be a decent chance. And again, Monday into Tuesday, probably our highest chance to getting some scattered showers and thunderstorms around. 88 at North Hills right now, Some passing clouds. See that dew point at 67? That's come down a little bit. 82 and Oxford, 86, Roxburgh, 82,

90. The only area were over 100 right now is that Clinton at 102 degrees. So not terrible at this point in time. But if that dew point comes up, boy, it's really going to get pretty nasty. Warbirds in action tonight if you're heading out to watch them, low 90s before and steamy about 81 by the time you're heading on home. Tropics are getting quite active and not just here in the Pacific too. More on that coming up in a few minutes, Barbara. All right, Steve, thank you. And as the heat ramps up, some schools in Nash County are without air conditioning. This has put out a notice to families last night saying that they're working to diagnose the issue and make the repairs as soon as possible. Officials say health and safety remain their top priority and schools may have to adjust their schedules while the repairs are completed.

Breaking right now in Durham, a lockdown lifted at Hillside High School. The Durham County Sheriff's Office says that there was a report about someone with a gun and a bomb on campus. Deputies say no weapons were found, ban camp and football practice happening at the time of the lockdown. Durham County Sheriff has given the all clear. Well, turning now to the Sand Hills, where a Pine Bluff man is in custody in connection with a triple homicide investigation.

Penelope Lopez joins us live from outside the Moore County Sheriff's Department with the Lerner. latest on this, Penelope. Hi, good afternoon. Barbara, you know what's interesting about this case was that the Moore County officials say they were able to identify 40-year-old Demetrius Aguas through a flock camera and other evidence. Now, this flaw camera, as we know we've been speaking about all week, is a, the flock camera is an AI powered camera that captures passing vehicles and it pinpoints certain characteristics of a vehicle like the make, the mom, the model. and the color and officials say that's how they were able to identify him. Now Agies is facing three first-degree murder charges along with burglary.

According to an arrest warrant, the suspect allegedly broke into a home on Wednesday where he's accused of killing three people inside. Deputies find the victim found the victims around eight in the morning inside a home on Ryder Cup Boulevard in the Oakwood Hills Golf community. Now that's about a 75 mile drive from downtown Raleigh. New court documents identify the victims as Bobby Ray Ferris, Christina Lynn Aguilis, and Trinity Cheyenne Thomas. Authorities have not released how the victims died and the relationship between the suspect and the victims is not yet known. Court records also show that Aguiz has a history of violent offenses.

Now we're working to find out what the motive is. For now, live in Moore County. I'm Penelope Lopez. ABC 11 eyewitness news. All right, Penelope, thank you. Well, the latest on that will come up later here on eyewitness news. Also today, we're learning about a high-speed police chase that started in Wake Forest and ended in a crash 20 miles away in Durham. Officials tell eyewitness news that chase began on Dr. Calvin Jones Highway near Thompson Mill Road after police noticed someone driving recklessly with fictitious tags.

A pursuit ensued and ended with a dramatic chase and crash on Holloway Street in Durham. This is video of the aftermath you're seeing here. a Wake Force Police SUV and a Toyota Highlander both with extensive damage. We're learning one person was taken to the hospital. The highway patrol is now leading this investigation. Well, just days after the R-line took its last spin through downtown Raleigh, the transit agency is holding a public hearing on the now suspended service. Go-Raleigh suspended the downtown route and launched a study on its low ridership as more people use ride share services like scooters and bikes instead. And now you can comment on the future of the R-line. The public

hearing is happening at 4 p.m. during the Raleigh Transit Authority meeting at City Hall. Also today the possible next projects at RDU, the airport authority discussing new construction projects including Terminal 1 expansion and parking garage renovation and repairs. Today's meeting starts at 1 o'clock. Well, today, new details on the decision to sneak President Trump out of Turkey on a secret flight last month and the Iranian terror cell allegedly sent to assassinate him. ABC's Mary Bruce has the latest. It was just hours before. President Trump was scheduled to leave the NATO summit in Turkey that the decision was made to secretly sneak him onto a different plane, concealing him in a catering truck.

According to a senior administration official, the call was driven by intelligence that an Iranian terror cell had snuck into Turkey with a shoulder-fired missile and that they had information about Trump's movements. Were you worried about a shoulder-fired missile? I don't worry about anything, to be honest. Whatever it is. You know my attitude? Whatever. The ruse shrouded in secrecy with only a handful of top aides aware of what was happening, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, along with communications director Stephen Chung, who all rode on the old Air Force One, sequestered in the front cabin of the plane away from the rest of the staff and the press,

who were unaware that the president wasn't actually on board and that they were effectively acting as a decoy. The plane carrying Trump was escorted by F-35 fighter jets, standard protocol for Air Force One. So, too, was the old Air Force One, something highly unusual for a plane not carrying the president. Trump dismissing concerns about the threat posed to those who remained aboard the plane he was supposed to be on. Actually, the plane that I flew on was at greater risk. I think it was at greater risk, because that would be the plane. I think that they would be more likely to go for it. Mary Bruce, ABC News, Washington.

The countdown is on to the first day of classes at NC State. Today students are back on campus for move-in day. NC Central students also moving in today in Durham, followed by a number of other local universities hosting move-in day this weekend. The first day of classes for both NC State and NC Central is Monday, August 17th. And our first alert day coverage continues today. New options under consideration to renovate the Kennedy Center. if parts or all of the venues should be closed during the renovations.

A vote is expected today. Eyewitness News. We are Local News weeknights 4 to 630 and 11. Happening now, the parents of Nolan Wells and Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump renewing their push for a federal investigation into Wells' death. They spoke of the National Association of Black Journalist Conference in Atlanta. Nolan brought light to our family. he was defun in it. And with his birthday coming up, like my wife said, we have to deal with a new normal.

The Congressional Black Caucus is now calling on the DOJ to determine whether a separate federal investigation, including possible civil rights investigation, is warranted. Nolan disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island in Mississippi. His body was found on the morning of July 6th. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family classified both the cause and manner of death as undetermined. Findings from the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office have not been publicly released. New at noon, the future of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. could be on the line today. The board of the iconic venue is expected to vote on a possible closure to make way for renovations. ABC's Olivia Rubin is in Washington.

The center hosts millions of visitors each year built as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, celebrating the performing arts. But recently, it's been the center of an intense legal battle surrounding President Trump's plans to shutter the building for two years for renovations. And the board who Trump filled with his own handpicked appointees added Trump's name to the building. But in a blow to the administration, a judge blocking it all, ordering Trump's name to be taken down and stopping those plans to close,

calling the move, quote, ill-informed and seemingly preordinated. That renovation had been approved by the board in March, but the judge found it didn't properly weigh the possible impacts of the closure. Congress had allocated more than $250 million for the project through Trump's big beautiful bill. Now, according to court filings, the board is considering three options for now to move forward, a full closure, a partial closure, or limited phased work. Olivia Rubin, ABC News, Washington. Still ahead at noon, the urgent investigation into the deadly crash of a military helicopter in central Texas. We're working to learn more about the service members killed. And the search continues for the person who shot and killed a South Carolina teenager at a school bus stop.

Now to the tragedy in Texas, two soldiers are dead after a crash involving an Army Apache helicopter based at Fort Hood. It happened in a field near Fort Hood Wednesday afternoon. Photos of the aftermath show the wreckage, flames and clouds. of smoke. First responders arrived to find the crash and also sparked a grass fire that quickly grew out of control for a time, forcing evacuations for people nearby. We know that two soldiers were in the helicopter. Investigators have not identified those soldiers. This was an Apache helicopter and two souls were on board. G-Fi, they told me there's those survivors.

Fort Hood officials say that the Apache chopper was assigned to the first cavalry division. It is not clear where the chopper was heading when it went down. and now officials are trying to figure out what cause that crash. In South Carolina, the investigation continues into the shooting death of a 17-year-old student who was boarding a school bus Wednesday morning. The Cherokee County Coroner identified the victim as Jamil trained Fair Jr. Investigators say Fair walked from his apartment across the street and was about to get on the bus when he was approached by another male.

There was a short altercation and shots were fired. Fair was pronounced dead at the scene. Our community is grieving today, but, our grief must lead to action and our action must lead to collaboration and our collaboration must lead to results. We owe that to the young man who lost his life today. We owe this to his family. We owe this to every person in Gaffney and Cherokee County who deserve the opportunity to grow up, graduate and pursue a future they can come home to safely. Bus surveillance video shows the shooter running to a waiting vehicle driven by another person.

investigators say 15 students on that bus saw the shooting. Turning to the weather now in the flood disaster in the Midwest, a state of emergency has been declared in Indiana with evacuations ordered and neighborhoods underwater. ABC Sophie Flee has the latest. Catastrophic flooding, swamping parts of Indiana, nearly a foot of rain inundating neighborhoods. Many highways, impassible, a giant sinkhole swallowing part of this road. Cruise going door to door Muncie pulling people to safety. For many residents, they say the flooding happened with little warning. My fiance called me and told me that I needed to start packing a bag and to get ready to get out of the house. And when I looked out of the window, I saw my fence floating past my window.

Officials calling the flooding a one in a thousand year event. I've been in the area for 60 years and there's never been anything remotely compared to this. It's several feet. higher than most people have ever seen it here before. It comes after deadly storms pummeled the Midwest, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The Chicago area also hit hard after multiple tornadoes touched down, damaging homes and schools. Meanwhile, another weather event brewing, thousands of miles away. Hawaii is bracing for a tropical system expected to bring heavy rain and damaging winds this weekend. Overnight, more than 270,000 customers were still without power in Indiana alone,

and the state is expecting more rain today. Sophie Flee, ABC News, New York. All right, that leads us to our weather. Boy, that was some crazy flooding, wasn't that? Yeah, it is. It's getting crazier and crazier as we go along. So today, I'm a little optimistic. We might not get to advisory criteria for a lot of us.

Good. Not going to happen tomorrow. So I like it. You're good. Tomorrow's really going to be nasty compared to today, I think. Anyway, this is where the heat advisory is, triangle and point south, but a good part of Wake County right now are due points have fallen to the 60s. Still humid, but not in that danger category. I think farther south you are probably not going to be that lucky. Outside right now, we've got some hazeo going on and some passing high clouds as well.

More clouds off to our north and west. Feels like 105 to 109 tomorrow. I think tomorrow will be worse, so we'll have a heat advisory. maybe some areas in the viewing area in extreme heat warning. And by the evening, we could get some strong storms coming in from the north. Spotty weekend storms, mainly Saturday. And I think it's mainly south of the triangle and points west. That's where we could get some stronger storms, but feels like numbers over 100.

And getting quite active in the tropics now. Couple disturbances, what we're watching. This one that's at 80% not worried. That's going to move in the Caribbean, hit sheer and kind of fall apart. This one catches my attention, the 50% chance, not because we're worried about a coming here, but because the trajectory is a little bit farther to the north. So we'll see how indeed that does interact over the course of the next five days or so. And we're getting to that point where things really start to ratchet up from here on all the way through early October.

And as you just saw in this story before, there is a tropical storm that's heading towards Hawaii. The big island could get impacted as we get into Saturday morning and scoot along the coast with heavy rain. The surf is going to be up so there will be impacts if you have plans to go to Hawaii anytime soon. The feels like numbers today, again, we could be a little bit below advisory criteria here, but it's going to be hotter farther to the south. Now look what happens as I advances to tomorrow. Big time changes, right? It's going to be significantly hotter in some areas close to 110 degrees. And you get there for a couple of hours that would have the National Air Service issue in extreme heat warning.

So we might see that. There you see some showers that are coming in from the north and west. They're waning, though, as they get closer. So these are kind of fizzling out. With that said, I can't rule out a stray shower or thunderstorm this afternoon, but the story is just a hot one out there. We're 88, but again with a dew point at 67, only it feels like of 91. I'm hoping that holds on through the afternoon. Low 90s in the sand hills right now, but higher dew points farther to the south, where you see those low to mid-70s. We need dew points like this up here to really feel those impacts, and if we're lucky, maybe we'll hold in the 60s. Evening out, if heading to the deep app, 92 degrees for the start of the game about 82.

when you head home dollar dogs on Thursday nights. And if you're out late tonight, I know we peaked last night with the percy. It's there's still some out there. Not nearly as many, but there's still some out there. So if you're out later on tonight, you can see that. This front is pushed to the south. Shows and thunderstorms around, mainly south and west. Then on Sunday, a stray shower thunderstorm as possible. I'm really focused on the next front. That gets here Monday night into Tuesday, giving us a decent chance at showers and thunderstorms. Hot today in the 90s, a stray late day storm. It's a sultry night, folks. Loes are going to be in those mid-70s, first-aller

seven-day, likely going to have a heat advisory, maybe an extreme heat warning, and a level one risk by the evening hours. So there's a lot going on. Over the weekend, spotty storms, still pretty hot. Monday, though, likely going to be flirting with 100 degrees and likely going to have at least another heat advisory. Barbara. Wow, all right. an important recall after injuries are reported from a hair spray. We are back with a recall alert. The Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of a hair product due to a risk of explosion. The Hinkle Corporation is voluntarily recalling its Schwartzcoff professional osis grip hair moose. A packaging problem could cause the aerosol can to leak and then potentially explode under pressure. The affected cans were sold in several states to both salons and individuals. The company said it received three complaints. One customer reported bruising to a hand, but no other injuries were reported. All right, there is a winner for the $1 billion dollar powerball jackpot. The winner bought the ticket at a convenience store in

Quincy, Illinois. The ticket holder has not been identified and can remain anonymous in Illinois if they so choose. The manager says he was up early fielding calls and text messages over the excitement that the ticket was sold at his store. Exciting that it brings a light onto Quincy here and especially our fast and fresh ivy here is great and a lot of buzz in here with the customers excited and things like that. So it's definitely the word is getting around. Yep, I've been up since 3 a.m. So people calling me and text to me and things like that. The winning ticket holder has the option to take the $1.04 billion across 30 payments over 29 years, or they can take the lump sum payment, which would be $450.5 million before taxes. Wednesday's jackpot was the first worth of billion

since $1.8 billion was up for grabs late last year. Happening now, a major hiring event is underway at Fort Bragg. Veterans, service members, and their families have a chance to connect with potential employers. More than 900 jobs have resulted from this event just in the past year.
