Right now, live coverage from your local news leader.
Today's top stories you need to know and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11 eyewitness news.
Good afternoon. I'm Barbara Gibbs.
I'm Amber Repented. Thanks for joining us this Tuesday here at noon.
And right now we're in the Breaking News Center following a shooting in Raleigh.
Chopper 11 is showing us the scene live here.
And we can show you where this is happening.
A suspect is in custody there.
after a person was shot near Summit Avenue and South Saunders Street.
John Dowding is eye with the scene. John, what police telling you?
Well, Barbara, Amber, right now, it is still a really active scene here.
There's still a number of police officers here on scene, as this investigation is well underway.
All of this happening not long ago, maybe about within the last hour, hour and a half or so.
As we've learned, there is at least one person who's been injured as a result of this shooting.
As we were arriving here on scene, we actually saw an ambulance with sirens and lights on leaving this neighborhood,
leaving this block here where we are right now.
We're still waiting for more details about the injuries
that somebody might have suffered.
But again, we are learning this as responding
to a call of a shooting here.
Trapper 11 was up above the scene earlier as well,
still up above the scene right now
as this investigation is well underway.
Now we saw some images from Trapper 11
giving us a little bit of insight into what could be going on
here as we're waiting for more official details
from Raleigh Police.
Trapper 11, seeing Raleigh police talking to a man,
having him empath,
his pockets and turning him around in front of a police car and putting him in the back of a police car.
Again, we don't know exactly who this person might be, but we did see Riley police focusing
some of their attention in this investigation on this person as well.
We also did see a medical examiner's vehicle arrive here on scene from Chopper 11 as well.
Again, we are waiting to learn some more details here from investigators here on scene.
Again, all of this really just happening within the last hour, hour and a half.
A lot of these details are still coming in right now.
But what we do know is that they responded to a call for a shooting here on Summit Avenue.
I spoke with neighbors here who were inside their house earlier today.
They told me they heard some pops.
They heard some gunfire.
They didn't really know exactly what it was.
And then they came outside and they found this scene that you're seeing on screen right now, right outside their door.
So again, there are still a lot of unanswered questions at this time.
But it does sound like when we spoke with RPD earlier today, it sounds like they do possibly have somebody in custody here.
but again, we're working to confirm a lot of these details right now.
So stick with us as these details are continuing to develop.
We'll update you on air and online as we work to learn more here.
Laughing here in Raleigh. I'm John Downing. ABC 11. I witness news.
All right, John, keep us posted on that breaking news in Raleigh. Thank you.
And now the breaking news out of Durham this noon.
A truck driver is hurt after a crash with a train.
Here's a look here from Chopper 11 flying over that scene.
This is right near Grant Street and East Pettigrew Street.
The Durham Fire Department says that the driver of the semi-truck was rushed to the hospital
and is expected to be okay.
are now looking into what caused the crash.
The weight is almost over the Cains back in the Stanley Cup final for the first time in 20 years.
Yeah, puck dropping in about eight hours tonight at the Lenovo Center.
And Cainiacs all over are taking warning.
Let's go to Tamara Scott.
She's joining us live with a lot of excitement growing today.
Hi, Tamara.
Hey, good afternoon, you guys.
I'm taking a page out of Amber's book by coming out here with some nice new Keynes merchandise.
I just went and got this foam finger.
And there were so many people who were inside this.
store some fans who are already trying to get out here early to tailgate and there's
certainly going to be a lot of places for them to do so take look here just behind me
you can see they're putting up the final touches on this stage that is going to be
outside of the Lenovo center here but we actually got inside early this morning
got a chance to see the canes on the ice during their morning skate take a look
at this this is just one part of how they prepare but also the Lenovo Center is
getting prepared for the big game as well we saw them lay out their towels and
the Zamboni was flooding the ice we also got a sneak
at the new graphics for tonight.
They look fantastic.
Everyone inside is going to have a ball.
And everyone outside is also in for a treat
as these final preps are getting underway.
It's a free tailgate and watch party.
I did get a chance to talk with some fans who tried
to get into tailgate early.
They were turned away, so they decided
to get some new merchandise.
Look, take a listen.
It's hard to believe it's been 20 years though.
Yeah, that's true.
I think hockey was still relatively new here in Carolina.
You know, so I think the hype is much bigger now
than it was back then.
What'd you end up getting instead?
I got myself a puck hat and also a new hat.
Cheaper hat in case we get a hat trick.
I can throw it on the ice.
Okay, so you can't play in a head.
Of course, yeah.
You can't throw the expensive hats on it.
Exactly, right.
Happening out here today.
There's one truck that just went by.
They're still putting up a lot of the equipment over there.
But this is going to be so much fun.
The puck drops at 8 o'clock, but we know fans will be here early.
Still from now until when the puck drops, getting their merchandise,
I heard inside the store that that store in Lenovo,
Center is going to stay open. It's going to stay open until the end of the game. Back to you.
All right. Tamara. Thank you. Well, if you don't have Hurricanes Gear yet, you still have time.
Yeah, but officials do have a warning about fake merch. Bianca Holman is live at the Lenovo Center with more on what to look for.
Hi, Bianca. Hey, good afternoon, you guys. So we're inside the fan store and the city is going to be draped in red, white, and black.
I already copped a hat ready to wear tonight. But you can see here fans grabbing their
gear to be ready for tonight's game. And of course with everyone so excited, there's so much
excitement and joy building up, there are scammers actually trying to make a dollar and take
advantage of fans, though. So we spoke with the Secretary of State Elaine Marshall about
trademark and counterfeit. She says that this is a time now where their office is on alert and
they want to make sure that Kaniaks are aware of what is official and what's not official as
they support the home team. So here are some things to consider. Secretary Marshall says
consider the place, the price and the packaging. The
The place should be a legit game or sporting goods store, not the back of someone's truck
or even an online individual seller.
And if the price is extremely cheaper than what's in store, most likely it's fake.
And the packaging should have a hologram of some type on the tag.
Criminals are depending on consumers looking for a deal to sell their fake gear, but buying
it has major negative impacts.
The impact is frequently unknown, but it's horrific.
Number one, there's no sales tax that's paid on this.
to the manufacturing circumstances may be in a foreign country using child labor on unsafe
equipment. We know that terrorists support themselves with making and selling counterfeit goods.
So Secretary Marshall says that if you do encounter fake gear out and about to let the nearest
law enforcement officer know. Also, she has a team that's out there, a hundred and some odd
people that are out there. They have already continued and already started monitoring things
and threats online and they'll be out in a bit.
about monitoring the area here around the arena and around the city.
So again, be sure that you copy your gear.
I can't wait to wear mine.
Things are flying off the shells here.
Get here as soon as possible.
This is the spot to grab your official Kane's gear.
Back to you.
And now I can hear the cash register going behind Bianca there.
It's nonstop.
Bianca, the crackdown on counterfeits.
Thanks.

And taking a live look outside on this Tuesday. It is a beautiful day.
This is downtown Raleigh, our Pindo Sky Camp 301 Hillsborough Street.
tease us up to meteorologist Cruz Medina because all of the tailgators today couldn't have we call this chamber of commerce weather.
Oh absolutely. A chamber of commerce day. And so we hit the jackpot with how nice the forecast is shaking out for this afternoon.
For any of you tailgating before the game, tipters will be in the 70s. We'll have sunshine as thicker clouds that we had around this morning have broken apart at this time.
So even right now, tipters are slow to rise only 73 degrees in Braille. You probably felt the refreshing feel in the air today.
The humidity has dropped significantly and the clouds continue to push to our south.
So there's actually some rain that's going to miss most of us.
You're down in Hope County.
Cumberland County is possible you get a little sprinkle here in the next few hours, but that's about it.
Later tonight we clear out.
Tipters go down into the low 50s, even some spots drop against the 40s.
So it'll feel even a little cooler than it did this morning, but you have a smooth morning commute tomorrow.
No weather related concerns there.
Tipters rising into the middle 70s by the time we get into the noon hour with lots of sunshine.
So tomorrow almost as nice as what we see today.
If anything, if you like it warmer, it might even be a better day for you.
Loads mid-80s across the region throughout the day tomorrow, but 90s are in our near future.
We'll talk more about that coming up in your seven-day forecast.
Back to you.
All right, Greece, thank you.
Former North Carolina police officer caught on video punching a woman during an arrest and goes before a judge.
The shocking video going viral.
We'll talk about that.
And new at noon, we're also hearing from the victim's family today, plus what's next for the former officer.
And what the war was drawn is threatening an already fragile peace agreement.
The 2006 Chevrolet Equinox awarded the most dependable compact SUV in the U.S. by J.D. Power is designed for your everyday.

For the first time, since the war with Iran began, Secretary of State Marco Rubio answering questions from lawmakers today on Capitol Hill.
ABC's Olivia Rubin has those details from the nation's capital.
Today's Secretary of State Marco Rubio, one of the leaders behind the Iran war,
facing questions on Capitol Hill for the first time since fighting began.
There is the prospect before us, which could happen today, it could happen tomorrow,
it could happen next week, that for the first time, certainly in my memory,
they have agreed to negotiate aspects of their nuclear program that just a month ago or just a year ago,
they were refusing to even mention, much less into discussions about.
President Trump telling ABC he thinks there will be an agreement to end the ceasefire
and reopen the Strait of Hormuz over the next week.
But President Trump has said that repeatedly, and the two sides have been negotiating for more than a month.
And now a key sticking point seemingly derailing the talks.
Israel's continued attacks in Lebanon on Hezbollah, Iran threatening to cut off communication with the U.S.
The president describing it as a little glitch,
but claiming on social media talks would continue at a rapid pace
and saying he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu
who would hold back on more attacks in Lebanon.
But more strikes reported today, Lebanon's state media
saying three new Israeli strikes killing at least one person.
Israel's military also saying sirens sounded in northern Israel
due to rocket and drone strikes.
And sources say that colds,
between President Trump and Netanyahu was tense. Trump reportedly cursing at Netanyahu,
calling him, quote, crazy and at one point asking, what the expletive are you doing?
Olivia Rubin, ABC News, Washington.
The college basketball coach who nearly drowned trying to save her nephew from a rip current tells her story.
Plus the expert advice that could help save your life.
Now to a push to bring more safety to ride shares, lawmakers are standing alongside the family of
Emmanuel B.D. The Durham Uber driver.
driver found shot to death in his car last year after picking up a rider in Johnston County.
Sean Coffey is live on Jones Street with more on that, Sean.
Good afternoon, Barbara.
Today's message was really all about creating stricter safeguards for passengers and drivers
that are engaging in ride share.
And today we heard not only from lawmakers, the spokesperson for the BD family.
Emmanuel BD was that Durham man, the 57-year-old.
We immigrated here from Liberia, had raised four kids in Durham.
The
after getting a shot and killed back in January of 2025 after picking up a passenger while driving for Uber. 18-year-old Trayvion Browne of Dunn was arrested in connection with the shooting and remains locked up pending trial. The meantime Beatties estate has since filed a civil lawsuit against Uber technologies alleging wrathful death and negligence saying the right-share giant did not do enough to screen potentially dangerous passengers. Now they're trying to change that.
He drove to give us a better life. Everything he did, he did for his family.
When we lost him, we lost the center of our world.
The grief does not come in waves.
It is constant.
It lives in the empty chair at the dinner table.
In the silence where his voice used to be.
In every moment we reach for him.
And now the focus turns to potentially future legislation on this issue.
Specific safety measures that were mentioned today include better incident reporting,
as well as new safety requirements involving cameras in cars,
as well as making sure that previous safety measures
previously violent offenders are not able to use these ride chair services and we'll have more on those efforts coming up later today on eyewitness news back to you all right shone thank you all right on this tuesday here's a live look outside of the bull city a beautiful day out there feels like the humidity really went down it really did so we saw that flush out yesterday with that front and so we get to enjoy the low humidity all the way through the end of the week even when it starts warming up so that's the good news in the forecast today tomorrow really for the foreseeable
future is going to be nice. But today, tailgating weather for the canes, that is going to be fantastic.
So 70s this afternoon and of course the low humidity. By the end of the week, 90s are in the forecast.
That's Friday all the way through the weekend. And with all of this heat heading our way, the bad news is it's going to stay pretty dry.
So the only rain chance over the next seven days is really Sunday night into Monday. And it's just a small chance at this time.
Live look at the satellite radar.
So this is a loop here over the past several hours.
We had some thicker clouds around this morning,
even a few spotty showers that moved through parts of Alamance,
Orange and Chatham counties to our south,
an area like Hoke County,
you might get some showers and heads up to Lumberton.
You might get a little bit of rain in the next two hours as well.
But four areas like the triangle,
most of the sand hills and our northern counties,
middle to upper 70s this afternoon,
lots of sunshine, great for outdoor plans,
great for the Cain's tailgate this afternoon.
And we're going to keep this nice weather going through tonight.
First alert predictor shows the clouds staying generally back to our west.
So mostly sunny afternoon through tonight we clear out winds are out of the north.
And that's going to drive our tipters all the way down into the 50s and in some cases northwest of the triangle, maybe even the 40s for tonight.
So a bit of a chilly start to your Wednesday, but nice nonetheless by the afternoon.
Still mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s.
Back to tonight, I talked about how nice it was going to be for tailgating the Canes game.
Puck drop is at 8 o'clock.
Before you head into the Lenovo Center, Tipters will be in the lower 70s.
By the time the game wraps up, we have already cooled into the 60s, so maybe a little chilly walking out of the Lenovo Center.
And then again for tomorrow, low 80s, I say tomorrow is the pick of the week.
So it's a good balance.
It's still below average, not overly hot, a little bit warmer than today, but with the humidity staying low, it's going to feel great.
so I highly suggest getting outside and making the most of that nice weather.
Fast forward through the middle of the week.
High pressure starts to slide to the south.
This will essentially be right over us on Thursday, and that's where the heat starts to build.
So it's already going to start to feel like summer by Thursday, but we're still in the 80s.
88 is the forecast high in Raleigh.
That heat will build back in through the mid-south and the southeast as well.
I'll take you outside real quick, but not outside in central North Carolina.
This is our beautiful coast.
Wrightsville Beach. Look at how stunning it looks out there. There is a red flag warning for parts of the coast today.
Rip current conditions are expected to be pretty bad. So not the best day to be in the water, but definitely nice to go out there and lay out.
Again, tonight, tipter is dropping into the 50s and 40s across the region for tomorrow. Highs will range from the low 80s up north to mid 80s and the sandhills.
Your first alert seven-day forecast shows tipter's rising into the low 90s by Friday. So feeling like summer minus the humidity. Saturday, kind of
the peak of that heat reaching 94 in Raleigh.
The same for Sunday, Sunday night into Monday.
There could be a passing shower.
Tippeders early next week still around 90 degrees.
Back to you.
Cruz, thank you.
We turn now to the UNC Wilmington Women's Basketball Coach,
who nearly died trying to save her eight-year-old nephew from a rip current.
Nicole Woods is now sharing her story.
ABC's Victor Okendo has more.
I am a miracle and I'm not going to, you know,
waste my life.
I could tell you that.
a woman and her eight-year-old nephew say they are grateful to be alive after nearly drowning at this North Carolina Beach last month.
41-year-old Nicole Woods, who is the head coach for the North Carolina Wilmington Women's Basketball team,
says she was on a family trip when her niece, Noel, and nephew Noah ran out to the shore to play in the water.
I saw Noah get hit by a wave. It was almost like a perfect storm.
She says the powerful wave knocked him off balance, pulling them under.
It wasn't until I got out there that I'd.
I realized at this point we were in a rip current.
Rescue teams jumping in as Woods and her nephew struggled to stay afloat.
I remember going under the light, push him towards the gentleman that was coming.
Rescuers able to pull both of them out, Noah, stable, but Nicole says she was not breathing and had no pulse.
It took five minutes of chest compressions before they shocked her heart.
Woods was placed on a ventilator before she was finally able to breathe on her own the next morning.
Experts telling us what you should know to survive dangerous rip currents.
First, learn how to spot them.
What I like to tell people is where there's a dip, there's a rip.
Have you ever been on the beach and the tides come in and wet all your stuff,
but the people along each side of you are dry?
You're in the rip. Stay out of it.
Other signs can be found on the surface of the water.
Look for white foam or flat areas where waves are not breaking.
Next, if you do get caught in a current, how to escape it.
The key is not to panic.
Let that current take you out.
and then flip and float.
Some people call it floating like a leap.
Lessons Nicole and her family will be using.
For now, just grateful everything worked out.
You want to say thank you, Coco?
Thank you, Coco.
If you were ever caught in a rip current,
staying calm and floating.
We'll also give you some extra time
to determine which direction the current is flowing.
If you can swim perpendicular to that direction,
like swimming to the side of a river.
And then when you no longer feel,
the pole, you can make your way back to shore, just do so at an angle. And if that doesn't work,
you can also just continue to float. Victor Okendo, ABC News, Key Biscayne, Florida.
Good tips there, especially in the summer. The largest sporting event in U.S. history is
nearly here. The World Cup is just a little over a week away. We'll take a look at the security
plans to keep all the teams and their millions of fans safe. Plus, Serena Williams is officially
making a comeback. What we know about the tennis icons return to the court.
Top U.S. officials beefing up security for the World Cup.
Starting June the 11th, tens of thousands of people will arrive to various stadiums across the nation to catch all the action.
Authorities say they are combating cyber threats, potential lone wolf attackers and drones.
Nearly a dozen U.S. cities will host 78 matches.
And officials say immigration agents will be involved in security operations, but their main focus will be on counterterrorism.
And tennis legend, Serena Williams, is returning to the
To tennis at the Queens Club where she will compete in doubles.
The 44-year-old never officially announced her retirement, but it has been nearly four years since her last match.
And months later, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champ gave birth to her second daughter.
Serena Williams is set to play June the 8th.
And we are sending out our congratulations to the big winners of TST.
Three one-million dollar checks were handed out last night.
In the men's tournament, Brandon Escado found the back of the net giving Hernandez,
United the victory over Puma to Alabama, three to two.
And the women's bracket, the Iowa Demon Hawks defeated Simply Football FC and the Pulchay Hawks beat Sneaky FC to capture the first ever mixed tournament title.
So congratulations.
Carolina Hurricanes chasing a championship.
We're going to head back outside to the Lenovo Center where everyone's taken warning for a preview of tonight's game one.
Plus, we're getting new information on a shooting in Raleigh, a heavy police,
present still on the scene.
