and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11-I-Witness News.
Good Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks for joining us.
I'm Amber Repenta.
And I'm Barbara Gibbs.
After waking up this morning to record lows,
temperatures are going to start to rise tomorrow.
Let's get a meteorologist Steve Stewart
with more on the forecast.
Hey, Steve.
Hey, guys.
Yeah, you're right.
This morning it was downright chilly.
I had to wear a jacket when I went into the gym.
this morning. Look at these numbers flirting with the 30s in Roxborough and Sanford and Silers City and 48 in the triangle low 50s down around Fayetteville. That was a record at R2U at 48 degrees beat it by a degree of the old record back in 1956. We're not going to have temperatures like this again until the fall. Obviously very cold out there this morning or downright chilly. Fair weather clouds up for now. That's really all we're going to see is we go throughout the day today. About 84 for a high. Low humidity is going to be with us right on through the afternoon.
Yesterday we topped out at 78, so back to more seasonal temperatures today and no rain yet for the month.
And I don't expect a lot coming our way.
I've got a chance on Monday.
I'm not sold on the upper level pattern for this event, so we're going to keep that chance fairly low for now.
But we are going to see some temperatures warming up for sure.
78, partly cloudy at North Hills right now, five degrees warmer than yesterday.
That dew point of 40, the air is really dry.
It feels amazing out there with a light northwesternly breeze.
77 Lewisburg, 80 now Rocky Mount Wilson, the warm spot.
45 and Roanoke Rapids and Favo currently at 77.
Heading out for some baseball this evening out there in Wilson, 81 round first pitch, and then 65.
Really nice no matter what you have planned for this evening.
Enjoy it because this weekend here comes the summer heat.
More on that coming up in the 70 forecast.
All right. See you soon with more.
Thank you, Steve.
And now the breaking news from Chapel Hill Carborough City Schools this noon.
The power internet and phone service is out at Morris Grove Elementary School.
The school is now preparing to dismiss students.
early at 1230. Restoration time is now estimated to be 6 o'clock this evening. Well, new at noon,
a witness who police say watched an argument escalate and then killed an alleged attacker
will not be charged. Police responded to a shooting on Summit Avenue in Raleigh on Tuesday morning.
They found a man, Emmanuel Graham with a gunshot wound who later died at the hospital.
Before the shooting, police say that Graham hit another man with an axe during an argument. A witness
saw the fight and shot Graham, believing the other man involved.
was in danger. The other man has non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
Happening today, another public hearing on that controversial rate hike request from Duke Energy.
And it comes after security concerns postponed the previous meeting. Bianca Holman has a preview.
The public hearing taking place here at the Durham County Courthouse at 7 p.m. tonight,
giving you the chance to weigh in on Duke Energy's proposed rate hikes.
The company is seeking approval from state regulators for an 18% increase to residential
electric rates over the next two years. Duke Energy says the money will help improve the power grid
and help upgrade the current infrastructure due to more people moving to the region. But customers
call it unaffordable and want the commission to block the rate hike. Now these hearings have raised
security concerns. The previous hearing was called off not because of a specific threat,
but because there simply wasn't enough security staffing from the sheriff's office for an after
hour's event. And a Pinehurst man was arrested in April accused of threatening Duke Energy.
CEO before an appearance at NC State.
Again, that public hearing happening here at the Durham County Courthouse at 7 p.m. tonight.
In Durham, Bianca Holman, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Bianca, thanks. And happening now, Duke Energy is giving us a look at how they are preparing for hurricane season.
Officials providing updates on improvements to the power grid and the company's technology and operations ahead of any future significant storm threats.
Elena Athens is taking part in that tour and we'll have full reports later today here on eyewitness news.
How many today state lawmakers take up the debate on data centers?
The House is set to vote on a bill that would add restrictions on facility construction,
including electricity and water use, as well as the land where they can be built.
Sean Coffey is joining us live from Raleigh with an update on this bill.
Hi Sean.
You good afternoon Amber and Barbara.
This bill would usher in several new restrictions, as you just mentioned, for future data
centers here in North Carolina, and it has moved quickly through committee this week.
Some of those new restrictions include special permitting for the construction of those planned data centers,
limitations on water usage you just touched on that, and banning any local incentives to build them in a certain community,
as well as barring any foreign powers from controlling those data centers.
Now the legislation comes in response to the strong backlash that eyewitnesses has covered from people in communities across the state around the construction of these massive facilities,
which use large amounts of water and power and concerns about how they change the makeup of residential communities.
Those data centers have also been eligible for tax breaks in the past, which several lawmakers here in North Carolina have said that they are interested in ending.
Now, the House is currently in recess until 1 o'clock this afternoon, but again, a vote on this bill is scheduled on the calendar for later this afternoon.
My colleague Cindy Bay will be here at the legislature covering that and should have an update for you later this afternoon on eyewitness news.
Back to you.
All right, Sean, thank you.
We are counting down to game two of the Stanley Cup final.
The Carolina Hurricanes put up a fight until the end, but came up short against the Vegas Golden Knights in game one last night.
And the players and the fans, of course, disappointed with game one's turnout, but shaking it off today.
Tamara Scott joins us live with more on this. Hi, Tamara.
Hey, good afternoon. Guys, of course, last night's game did not go as the way the Kaniaks wanted the game to go.
But that doesn't mean that there's still not room for enjoying an achievement of the Keynes getting into the Stanley Cup.
final after 20 years.
And that celebration does continue here at Lenovo headquarters.
Of course, you can see here behind me, they've got some balloons set up.
They've got a celebration that's expected to start happening here.
You know, this playoff run, it really has energized the triangle from packing the Lenovo center
to businesses and partners and communities rallying behind the team.
So Lenovo is hosting this special employee celebration today, recognizing the hurricane's
first trip to the championship series in 20 years.
So employees here, they'll get refreshments.
Kane's swag and a chance to win two tickets to game two.
Now Lenovo's North American president, Ryan McCurdy and Hurricane's legend, Shane Willis,
along with Stormy, is going to make an appearance here today.
I talked with Katie Reed with Lenovo.
She tells me this is exactly what's needed to keep spirits up after last time.
Her name's on the building, right?
So there's pride behind this.
And so we're going to be doing a bunch of giveaways.
We got signed jerseys and sticks and pucks and, you know, tickets to the games that we're going to give away
because we want everyone to feel like they're a part of this.
It was a tough loss as we went to.
down to the three minutes, but it's one of those things of this is what we do, right?
We come back, we pick ourselves up, we keep going, and it's going to be a series, and we are so
excited to watch it.
And we know that when it goes to game five, it's going to be on home base, and we're all
going to be there for it.
And so the room here back at Lenovo headquarters is filling up as all of these employees
make their way in at a chance to win those two tickets to game two.
Now, of course, the next game is going to be at the Lenovo Center.
But for game three, they're heading out to Vegas, but you can still watch at Lenovo Center for a watch party.
$10 tickets are going sell at 1.30 to get your chance to go inside while they're away.
Back to you.
It's a nice perk for those Lenovo employees, Tamara.
Thank you.
And we will have team coverage throughout the Stanley Cup final, including pregame specials each night, each game night before the puck drops.
The next chasing the cup airs tomorrow here at 730 right here on ABC 11 and wherever you stream.
And then stick around for game two of the Stanley Cup final.

All right, hold on.
We'll grab your bags.
I'm going to carry you, okay?
Please do.
Thank you.
How terrifying.
After safely rescuing the driver and confirming she was not injured,
the officer then carried her and gave her a ride home.
Wow.
Gosh, Steve, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that.
It's like a movie.
That's crazy.
And then with the sky is so ominous,
and then I've never seen floating hail like that.
Yeah, right.
It's crazy.
And, you know, we get hailed, but not anything like that.
And with that much water.
Oh my gosh.
That is like a scary movie.
Yeah.
All right.
Did you guys step out early this morning?
Yeah, it's nice.
It's chilly.
Yeah, it's just nice.
It's chilling.
Yeah, a little cool to start.
We had a record load this morning in some areas
flirting with the 30s.
Not going to do that for a very long time,
probably all the way until next fall.
So if you like that type of stuff,
hope you enjoyed this morning.
We have a fantastic afternoon.
Really nice evening to get out, fire the grill up.
It's going to feel amazing for that walk
through the neighborhood.
Turning up the heat starts tomorrow. It's going to last for a stretch. Matter of fact, peaking over the weekend and the drought's worsening, unfortunately, with really low rain chances. I've gotten Monday as an opportunity, maybe Sunday night as well. But this doesn't look like much. I'm not really favorable with this upper level pattern, not too excited. The big core of the upper level highs up in Canada. We have this trough that's backing in a little bit. And depending on where that low sets up, how much rain we get. You can see the available moisture is really thick while out to our south and west. So for now, we'll keep a lot.
low level chance of showers on our Monday. But look at the heat. It's going to be coming our way.
Now, yeah, mid-90s is hot. Absolutely. Not records, but it's hot. But notice, too, it's not going to
feel that bad. Typically, when we have mid-90s, we're in that tropical type of air. Well, that's not the
case now. We'll get more humid as we get into Monday with that chance of rain, but the ambient
temperature is probably going to feel like the temperature, meaning it's not going to be a heat
index as we go into the weekend. 78 degrees in the North Hills right now, the Northwest
breeze about eight miles an hour.
Widespread mid upper 70s out there with an 80 Rocky Mount Wilson and Clinton knocking on the door there of 80.
But the reason it feels so good, due points in the 40s.
And we're talking low 40s and even upper 30s in spots.
This is a treat in early June.
So take advantage of it and get out this afternoon and evening if you can.
But in fact, how about going to the Bulls game?
Great evening for that.
81 is you're walking in there to the debap when you head back home at about 67 degrees.
And tailgating for tomorrow is going to be warm in the high 80s leading up to the game.
Lots of sunshine, not much of a breeze at all should be just fine.
As we look to Friday, sunny, hot, but not terribly humid.
About 94, we might crank it up another degree there to 95 as we head into the weekend.
We'll watch for this front eventually to settle to the south, and that could give us that rain chance as we head into our Monday.
Meantime up the mountains this weekend, numbers are going to be in the 80s and the southern mountains.
beaches looking good both days.
Both are good ways to beat this heat if you want to do that.
Around here, it's going to be in the mid-90s.
80 and Henderson, 84 and Raleigh, 83 in the Fayetteville today.
Just a few clouds around tonight.
Cool, but not nearly as chilly as this morning.
Most of those will be in those mid-50s.
First of all the 70s, look at all the 90s that's going to be coming our way.
Make some plans this weekend, maybe head to the pool to cool down.
There's that chance of rain on Monday.
And then back to the 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Amber?
All right, summer's around the corner. Steve, thank you. The White House Correspondence Dinner is back on after the event was interrupted by gunfire. We will have that story here in two minutes.

I ran over to hug her. She came out of nowhere. And then...
It stopped.
