Right now on IWitness News at noon, early voting now underway in North Carolina with just 19 days until the midterm elections.
We have eyewitness news team coverage as voters cast their early ballots.
And breaking right now, the Trump administration announcing the execution of the Fort Hood shooter by firing squad will not be live streamed.
We have details.
And we're just minutes away now from the gates at the North Carolina State Fair officially opening.
It's the news at noon.
Right now, live coverage from your local newsleader.
Today's top stories you need to know.
and your first alert forecast.
Here's what's happening where you live.
This is ABC 11-I-Witness News.
And good Thursday afternoon.
Thanks for joining us.
I'm Amber Rupenta.
And I'm Barbara Gibbs.
Another hot afternoon on Tab For us.
We could even break a record high temperature today and tomorrow.
Before cooling down this weekend,
in the meantime, today's drought report shows remnants from East Aeas did little to help
the rain shortfall in the central part of our state, even with an inch and a half of rain
in Western Wake County.
Let's go to meteorologist Steve Stewart joining us with this hot weather.
It is hot. Yeah, yesterday we got up to 90. We're going to be close to that today.
But it might actually feel a little hotter today because humidity is going to be up just a little bit.
So yay, good times, right?
But big changes are in the works.
It's really going to get cool as we head into the upcoming weekend way above average today.
And again, for tomorrow out ahead of the front.
Once that front blasts in here, we go below average.
And you're really going to notice the difference out there for it today with opening day,
temperatures climbing up to near 90 degrees. Lots of sunshine. We'll see a few clouds as you look off to the north. And around midnight, we get down to 70 degrees under mainly fair skies. 89, what we're going for today, would I be surprised if we touch 90? Not at all. We've done it 80 times already. Yesterday we did get to 90. Today's record is 88, so we're expected to beat that by about a degree or so. And we're barely holding on through a little surplus for the month. But that's going to go away until we get more rain. And there's a decent chance Friday night.
some spotty light showers and now a 50-50 chance will get rain on Saturday.
And that's mainly in the first half of the day and then another long dry stretch will come our way.
Clear skies out there at North Hills, 82 degrees right now.
That's one degree cooler than this time.
Yesterday with a light breeze less than five miles an hour.
78 Oxford, 81 into Roxborough, 82 into Raleigh.
A little bit cooler in South Hill.
There's actually a front situated to our north that might try to make it to our northern counties before retreating again.
80 as you head into the deep pace.
If you head into the Deepak tonight, if you're heading out there, really nice evening,
around 70 by the time you're heading home.
Next week, though, boy, it's going to be a pleasant autumn stretch.
More on that coming up in 70 forecast, Barbara.
All right.
Thank you, Steve.
We're following breaking news right now.
I wouldn't see he's inside federal court as eight people appeared accused of voting illegally
as non-U.S. citizens, a total of 10 people are facing federal charges.
The indictments say each defendant falsely claimed to be a U.S. citizen to register to vote.
Federal prosecutors say all but one of them then voted in the 2024 election.
The felony offense carries the possibility of up to five years in prison.
The defendants include both men and women from a range of backgrounds.
Prosecutors say nine out of ten of those arrested are lawful permanent residents but not citizens.
In court today we learn the defendants currently live in Wake, Cumberland, Harnett, Wayne, Granville and Robinson counties.
Our John Dowding is covering today's hearing, so look for updates later today on eyewitness news beginning.
it for.
Meantime, it is the first day of in-person early voting for the midterm elections.
Eligible voters can now cast a ballot through October 31st.
Tamara Scott begins our eyewitness news team coverage from one of the 18 voting sites in
Wake County.
Voters across North Carolina can officially start voting early here in Wake County.
There are 18 different polling locations that folks can choose from and there are a lot of important
races that are on those ballots.
So election officials want you to be prepared before you head out here.
Now, when you get out here, you may encounter a long line.
Take a look at this video this morning.
We were there when former Governor Roy Cooper was here at Chavez Park casting his ballot on the
first day of early voting and taking time to speak with voters waiting in line.
Cooper is facing Republican Michael Watley in the race for North Carolina's open U.S. Senate seat.
Both candidates are making their case to voters with less than three weeks until election day.
Cooper spoke this morning about the need for more cooperation in Washington.
While last week, Wadley emphasized the importance of Republicans maintaining control of
Congress. Well, I think people want government to work. I think they don't like this hyper-partisanship
where it looks like in Washington that Democrats often are trying to make Republicans fail,
and Republicans are trying to make Democrats fail. This election matters. We cannot let the Senate
go to the Democrats. We can't lose the House. Values matter. You know, you think about this
election cycle and you think about all of everything else that's going on.
Now Wally is expected to cast his ballot tomorrow morning in Gastonia. And for voters that are
heading to the polls early, there are a few things to remember. If you miss the registration
deadline, this is your chance to still vote and register at the same time. Be sure to bring
proof of where you live. And also something you need to bring with you regardless if you're
registering or not is a valid ID. If you don't have one though, there are exceptions and provisional
voting options are available. And remember, early voting, you can cast your ballot.
anywhere in the county that you are. It's unlike election day where you have to have a specific
precinct. And of course, it's not just on election day that you can vote. Obviously, early voting
lasts until October 31st. Back to you. Right, Tamara Scott, thank you for that. New at noon,
social activists, the Reverend William Barber, today leading hundreds on a march to the polls in
Durham. Yeah, they march from St. Joseph's AME Church to cast their ballots at NC Central School of
Law. Michael Perchick is joining us live from the Durham County Main Library with more. So
Michael, a big turnout on this first day of early voting.
Yeah, that's exactly right.
The parking lot here completely packed cars lining up to curbside vote.
And while people are going inside for their ballots, they are also gathering to hear Atlanta Senator Raphael Warnock deliver remarks trying to drum up support for Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.
As you mentioned, we were at one of Durham County's other 10 early voting sites this morning.
The Turner Law Building at NC Central people marching from St. Joseph AME Church to campus to campus to cast their ballot.
ballots and it's just one of several events led by Reverend William Barber's repairs of the
breach today. We spoke with one participant who shared why he is showing up.
When I think back all my life, I spent all my life studying about public administration and political
science, teaching it and actually doing it. And so this election is perhaps the most important
election in my lifetime. And so I'm here to try to see how many people I can get to come out
and make sure that we can vote.
Yeah, Warnock has been touring several states across the country.
He is going to be heading to the Capitol City later this afternoon to meet with voters there.
And it is that time of the year, right, where politicians are certainly visiting different sites.
And drum support support.
We saw Senator Chris Murphy.
Also here support Democrats on the ticket.
Of course, President Donald Trump was in Gastonia just last month.
He is coming back to Greenville next week to support Republican candidates, including former R&C chair, Michael Wally.
Coming up this afternoon, we're speaking with college students over at NC Central.
Their message to other young people about the important of making their voices heard at the polls in Durham.
I'm Michael Perchick, ABC 11, eyewitness news.
Michael, thank you.
And as early voting gets underway, here's some other important dates to keep in mind.
October 20th is the last day to request an absentee ballot.
Election day is Tuesday, November 3rd, exactly 19 days from now.
Polls will be open from 6.30 in the morning on that day to 7.30 p.m.
The Raleigh Wake Citizens Association meantime is providing transportation for anyone who needs a ride to an early voting site or on Election Day, November the 3rd.
You can also get a ride to the Wake County Board of Elections to get a free voting identification.
The number to call is listed there on your screen.
Well, now to a high-speed chase across Cumberland County.
It ended with two highway patrol cars wrecked.
This is the scene here.
This is Skybow Road.
Our crews tell us that troopers chase the driver across the county, trying again.
and again to stop the car, a pit maneuver,
and a parking lot finally ended it.
Two cruisers are badly damaged.
The driver's now facing charges.
No one's physically hurt.
New at noon, a forensic scientist back on the stand today
as testimony continues in the murder trial
of a UNC Chapel Hill student, Faith Hedgepad.
Yeah, jurors heard from two state crime lab workers yesterday
who talked about fingerprints and DNA evidence
that was all found at the crime scene.
Miguel Salgaro Olivares is charged with killing
the UNC student in her Chapel Hill apartment back in 2012.
Akela Davis has been following this every day.
She's joining us live now from court.
Hi, Kila.
Hi there.
Good afternoon.
So, yeah, the forensic scientists told the jury that advances in technology helped them with evidence from the Faith Hedgepeth case.
They say that new analysis found defendant Miguel Sagero Alvarez's DNA on several items.
So inside the courtroom, you said it, Aaron Irma, she returned to the witness stand.
She works for the North Carolina State Crime Lab as, again, a forensic.
scientists. She spent hours on the witness stand yesterday, returned today. She told the jury that
over the years, the state crime lab upgraded how it analyzed data. So that means it allowed scientists
to examine more areas of a DNA profile. In 2021, Ermish reexamined swabs of items collected
from the crime scene with the new technology. She set DNA on the Bacardi rum bottle, the blue
reasoning wine bottle, the white bag, Faf's boxer shorts, and her body included a DNA
profile from Miguel Sargaro Aliberas.
The mixture contains two interpretable components and Faith Hedgepeth, the donor of the
known sample item four, is assumed as being a contributor of DNA to this mixture.
The DNA profile obtained from Miguel Enrique Salgaro Oliveris is included as a possible contributor
to this mixture profile
and the DNA profile
obtained from Carino
Rosario is excluded
as a contributor to this mixture
profile. So a lot of DNA
science talk in court today
but something that's clearly very important to the
prosecution. I want to make mention
Faith Hedgepats loved ones
today. A lot of show of
support. They're filling three rows, three
pews in the courtroom. Reporting
live in Durham, Akila Davis,
ABC 11, eyewitness news.
All right. Akela.
Thank you. Safety concerns at Durham schools and the focus of a meeting tonight. Superintendent Anthony Lewis is hosting a town hall with district security and county law enforcement.
Families can bring their questions from 6 to 730 tonight at Riverside High School.
The 2026 North Carolina State Fair is officially underway now. The gates just opening minutes ago at noon.
And all your favorite rides, some new food and attractions ready for your enjoyment over the next 10 days.
Elena Athens joins us live from the midway in West Raleigh. Elena, how's it going?
Good afternoon to you ladies. The gates are opening right now at noon. Kick off to the North Carolina State Fair. And I know you ladies know exactly where I am. I'm in the food zone, okay? And I'm in a spot that smells so good because they're making fresh kettle corn right now. So let me take you up right now, give you a live look. The first batch of the North Carolina State Fair, it smells delicious. Butter and then also sugar. My guy Jamie's here. He said he's been here about 12 years doing this. And oh, it's actually popping over.
here. Okay, we got a whole little action. It's going straight into this beautiful copper
bowl right in front of here. I was really struck by how gorgeous this is. It's not filled up yet
because like I said, he's just starting to make that kettle corn, but it smells awesome. 11 days of
not only food, fun, but also entertainment here at the North Carolina State Fair. So there are some
new additions this year, including the 230 foot tall America 250 Faresville,
Lots of people come to try the food.
So this year there's going to be about 80 new items to sample.
Several small businesses are also taking part as vendors this year.
I caught up with one small business owner who said she's been working leading up to this big day and the gates opening here at new.
Let's just say I was there at Walmart when they closed yesterday.
Preping to the last minute.
Preping to the last minute between fans so that we can keep cool.
this 90 degree weather and then of course just getting everything together.
It's definitely been a journey.
All right, so we'll take you back to the kettle corn shop.
Wow, look at this.
This smells amazing.
Whoa, I'm gonna try this when I go off air.
I won't do it on air because that would be bad.
All right, so we're gonna come back to this later.
And speaking of food, you know, there were some changes this year for food vendors.
The North Carolina State Fair officials, they did change how they're going to interact
with some of the small businesses.
So now they're paying about 15% of total sales
where before there was a flat fee.
That change did lead some small businesses
as well as food vendors to pull out of the fair.
This year, others are pushing forward.
Jamie tells me he got a couple of calls,
messages ahead of time.
Ooh, you know, people asking if he's gonna be here.
He is, he's here, he's making kettle corn.
So there are plenty of spots to come out and sample some stuff.
Very nice at the North Carolina.
Oh, my photographer too, he's not gonna let that go.
by.
We'll send it back to you guys in studio as I start my eating tour here in West Raleigh.
Okay, Elena, that was my question because I know you're our resident foodie.
Are you planning on trying anything new this year?
Planting and trying everything.
I can get my hands on.
I'm trying everything.
So we're going to be moving about, although Barbara and Amber, I did bring a lunch
of just like salad.
You guys know how I eat like behind the scenes.
Like I'm very clean.
It's so annoying.
It's just depressing to be honest with you.
While I'm here, I'll indulge.
So yeah.
You know, Barbara Gibbs is a big fan of kettle corn.
I'm just saying.
Just saying.
We expect a full report of all the, you know, non-clean eating.
We need one for Barbara Gibbs.
Yes.
That's fun.
When you want for Barbara Gibbs here.
There you go.
She's ready.
This is for you, Barbara.
I'll bring it back.
I promise.
It better be full.
I promise.
All right, Elena, have fun.
Thank you.
So cute.
U.S. wholesale inflation jumped in September to its highest level.
in more than four years. We're going to walk you through the economic impact ahead.
And also breaking right now, President Trump has canceled the Pentagon's plan to live stream
the execution of the Fort Hood shooter. Then it went down again. Then it went down again.
When we pulled in, it was 1404. 139.
Two gas stations engaging in a price war drivers as you saw jumping for joy as the prices
reached less than a dollar. Look at the line. Get it.

Eyewitness news. We are local news weeknights four to six 30 and 11.
Breaking right now, President Donald Trump says the government will not live stream the execution of Ford Hood shooter Nidal Hassan.
Today's announcement comes after Defense Secretary Pete Heggs said announced last week, Hassan's death by firing squad would be live streamed.
Trump now nixing that plan, but he says family members of Hassan's victims will be able to watch.
Watch the execution in person if they want to on December the 3rd.
New economic data today pointing to more rising prices, wholesale prices jumping,
according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
It comes on the heels of rising consumer inflation.
ABC's Olivia Rubin has the latest on how this might impact you.
Today, with many Americans saying they're feeling the pain of rising prices.
It's the economy.
Healthcare is so expensive.
New economic data today showing more sharp prices.
increases, wholesale prices jumping 1.3% in September, the largest increase in more than four years.
Those wholesale costs now up more than 6% since last year. It comes on the heels of rising inflation
hitting 3.7% up from 2.8% right after President Trump took office. It's largely fueled by President
Trump's war with Iran, gas up 34% in the last year. Diesel hitting record highs, which
increases costs on most items.
Iowa farmer Lance Lillibridge saying they're taking a hit.
We're beyond a breaking point, you know, with the inflation of everything.
Those effects rippling across the economy to the cost of airfare and shipping.
An apparel in toy prices rising, too.
Economists say likely due in part to President Trump's tariffs.
And I wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning worrying about how you're going to pay this or how it's going to pencil out.
Still, the Commerce Department saying Americans are spending.
retail sales increasing last month by 0.8%, not adjusted for inflation, though most of that
spending was on gas. But with the midterms less than three weeks away, President Trump out on
the campaign trail, painting a different picture. But we don't have inflation, and tariffs
don't cause inflation. You know what they cause? Wealth. And if you're wondering how all of
this adds up, the average American family is now paying an extra $250 every month for the same
goods and services compared to a year ago.
Olivia Rubin, ABC News, Washington.
Well, it is an important day for senior citizens who need to enroll in Medicare Advantage.
This story ahead.
And preventing juvenile crime in Wake County.
Just ahead here at noon, how you can be a part of a listening session.
Happening today, Wake County is stepping up in the fight against youth violence as safety concerns grow.
Tonight, the county's juvenile crime prevention council wants to hear from you.
Leaders are asking about the needs, challenges and risks facing young people, and where
more resources could make a difference. The listening session runs from 6 to 8 at Southeast
Raleigh YMCA. This comes just days after Raleigh held its own session, hearing directly from
teenagers as the city weighs possible youth curfew to curb the violence.
Happening now, the push to expand hospitals in Wake County, WakeMed, Duke Health and UNC Health
Recs all submitting proposals to either build new hospitals or to expand current ones.
They say the new beds are needed to care for Wake County's growing and aging population.
And today state health leaders are holding a public hearing.
It just started at noon at NC State's McKimmon Center.
We're listening in on that.
Also new at noon, starting today open enrollment for Medicare Advantage begins.
Millions of senior citizens will have to pick new plans for next year.
Medicare Advantage covers just over half of Medicare's roughly 71 million enrollees,
but millions will have to find new Medicare Advantage plans because their policies are being terminated.
Others may have to pay more for their coverage and care.
One expert says as many as 3 million enrollees may be affected.
Open enrollment ends on December 7th.
All right, around here, it is a hot one, Steve Stewart.
Yeah, it is.
You know, the ambient temperature might actually be a degree or two less than yesterday.
We topped out 90 yesterday, but it might feel hotter because humidity is up just a little bit, so can't win.
If you want it cool, though, I've got a really nice stretch as we head into next week.
It's going to be fabulous.
It'll make it all worthwhile.
Outside right now, we've got sunshine.
Temperatures warming up. Already seeing a few low 80s out there. Feels like June out there for the opening day of the state fair. We're going to climb up to the upper 80s through the afternoon. Much cooler weekend, Saturday showers. Not a lot of rain when you add it all up, but we should be at least damp for the first half of the day. And then Sunday's just chilly and a pleasant stretch as we head into next week. Make some plans to get out. We're talking about some gorgeous temperatures. Monday 68, Tuesday 71, Wednesday 72. Lots of sunshine. We'll have a dry north.
easterly flow during that time period. There's a front just to our north that might back down close to us before
retreating again and it's thrown some clouds up in Virginia. You can see these as you look off to the north.
We've got full sunshine though farther off to the south. There's that rain chance. Friday night light showers will keep that
light shower chance around for at least the first half of Saturday and then those chances are going to go down
and then a long dry stretch once again. Listen all the models have some measurable rainfall at already you.
The euro's the most bullish but generally I'd say it's going to be a.
10th of an inch or less, not a whole heck of a lot. Let's jump ahead as we go into the overnight
hours tomorrow. Late evening, maybe some showers coming in from the north and west as that front
moves on through. Any precipitation behind it is going to be anti-frontal, we call that. And keep in
mind, too, it doesn't look like it's going to be a whole heck of a lot. Light showers, though,
for the first half of the day. Second half of the day should be getting a little bit drier.
Right now we have the sunshine and a little busy out there on six forks, 82 degrees. That's one
degree cooler than this time yesterday, but the dew point is higher. Dewpoint yesterday, low 60s
today. It's about 67. 70s up in our northern counties, 80s farther to the south. It's 86 right now
in southern pines. Evening out the state fair, numbers are going to fall all the way down to the
lower 70s under mainly clear skies. Should be a fabulous evening. Shorts and T-shirts,
absolutely for tonight. Now, Saturday, we'll get some morning rain around, and there could be a little
wave of low pressure that develops along this front, and it kind of hangs out. And it kind of hangs
out out here. The difference of pressure between that and this high is going to keep us with that
northeasterly flow. Dry air will be in place, a little breezy and temperatures only in the 60s.
And some of the guidance like the European model, the Euro AI model and I think the Canadian model and the UK all have this area
low pressure hanging out here for days next week. And I'm concerned that could be throwing a lot of
water there up around Highway 12 and we could get some overwash. Something we're going to keep an eye on
over the coming days.
Upper 80s around the triangle and the sand hills,
mid 80s up in our northern counties.
As you look north, you see some clouds.
And then a few clouds around overnight.
And low to mid-60s, again, we should be closer to 50s
to a mild overnight.
And then tomorrow about 88 degrees,
another record high temperature.
We'll see some showers, especially early in the day.
Chilly breeze, too, on Saturday.
Chili starts Sunday, widespread upper 30s
and the outlying areas.
And then next week, look at that stretch of weather.
It looks fabulous.
Sure does.
All right, Steve, thanks.
More than 25 years since the terrorist attack on September the 11th.
The remains of a second person are now identified.
Thanks to new technology, the details just ahead.
Food vendors at the state fair facing high prices,
will they be forced to pass that along to fairgoers?

Local news. ABC 11 eyewitness news continues now.
Well, today is the first day of in-person early voting in North Carolina.
there are 370 early voting sites across the state, including 18 in Wake County.
You can cast a ballot at any site in your county.
You can also register to vote if you missed the deadline, but be sure to bring your photo ID.
Early voting runs ends on Saturday, October 31st, and election day is November 3rd.
And election offices in several states reported receiving suspicious letters in the mail.
They contained a powdery white substance.
The FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are in best.
Investigating now, officials in Louisiana and Oklahoma confirmed they received the letters and evacuated their election offices while officers investigated.
The Ohio Secretary of State said Wednesday that his office was the intended recipient of one of these letters, but the Postal Service intercepted it.
No one was reported harmed in any of the incidents.
And the FBI said Wednesday that agents are now working with law enforcement partners to identify who sent the letters.
There's hundreds of thousands of people prepare their trips to the fair.
is learning more about the cost of doing business for vendors this year.
Yeah, according to fair officials, food vendors are being charged a 15% fee this year from their overall revenue.
That could have a big impact on prices.
Sean Coffey's at the fairgrounds to break it all down.
Well, obviously today we were talking about the excitement of the state fair being back.
The gates opening for the first time to the public.
But one of the main draws we know for the state fair is, of course, the fair food that you see behind me.
This is one of the main reasons people come out here.
And there are some difficult decisions some of these vendors are being forced to make this year.
That's because if there is a new 15% fee being charged to vendors on top of the standard booth rent that they've had to pay in the past for their physical spot.
And that has some of those vendors concerned about the difficult decision to either eat that cost out of their profits or pass it along to consumers in the form of higher prices.
For some context between taxes, point of sale fees and that new fare fee, about one quarter of every dollar earned for those vendors is gone right off the top.
We spoke with Oak City Fish and Chips, which has been a fixture here for the last six years, and it's one more.
multiple awards. They called this added fee the last straw for them, saying the math just didn't make sense for them to continue to set up shop.
So our revenue at the fair has normally ranged in between 150,000 to 200,000. So that would represent us giving the fair really around $25,000 to $30,000 in addition to the $4,000.
That is a significant amount of that makes the fare. 15% is in the realm of partnership. It's in the realm of equity, right?
somebody getting 15% of your business is like them being a partner.
Now in response, the fair spokesperson said we are one of the last large fairs in the country to go to this percentage model.
We did not want to make the transition coming out of COVID, so we waited a while to do it.
We understand that this is a big change for some vendors, but in making this transition,
we chose the lowest percentage being used in the industry.
The fair says the money generated from that new 15% fee will go towards improvements around the fairgrounds here
and enhancing the experience for fairgoers over the course.
of the next 10 days. We asked them specifically how many vendors were here last year that
chose not to return this year. They said in total about two dozen. In Raleigh, Sean Coff, ABC 11.
Eyewitness News. There are several ways to get to the fair. Anna Rivera shows us where to park and how
to get there by bus. So we've got 11 days to get to the fair. If you do decide to go to the fair,
you want to have a plan ahead of time as far as where you want to park and how you're going to
get there. So these are the free parking options that will be provided by the
fair. We've got the dogwood lot. It's at the corner of Edwards Mill Road and Reedy Creek Road.
This is going to drop you off at Gate 8 and Trinity Road if you decide to park there.
We also have another lot. This one is the Cardinal lot and this is on NC 54 and Edwards Mill Road.
This shuttle is going to drop you off at Gate 7. That's Youth Center Drive. Now, if you do want to do
more of a park and ride situation and get there by bus, Go Raleigh is offering some free buses.
They'll leave from the Dix Park, Flowerfield, lot A, that's on Hunt Drive.
And they are going every 30 minutes, starting at 8.30 until the close of the fair.
It's $5 round trip for most people.
They do have discounts for younger people, older people.
So if you are looking for all of that information, it is on the fair website.
Go Durham, they also have options.
You park at 515 West Pedigrew Street.
They have hourly service from 8 a.m. until the close of the fair.
And that is free.
Good tips, Anna. Thank you. Now to a fight brewing over cell phone towers on school campuses.
Wake County parents and neighbors are pushing back and want a say in what happens next.
A telecommunications company is working right now with the district to study four possible sites.
Towers could go up at Millbrook Middle School and at Fox Road, Hodge Road and Brassfield Road Elementary Schools.
For the district, the deals could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars, but families who live near these campuses, they are raising
concerns about health and safety.
I wouldn't want to be the board members because if they make the decision to go ahead through
