Starting point is 00:00:14 Welcome everyone to another episode of the Adeptus Ridiculous Podcast. My name is D.K. Diamantis and Sharks, am I right? And these are my co-hosts. Introduce yourselves. You first. I want to be a shark. I want to be a gray shark with massive gauntlet. That's what I want to be.
Starting point is 00:00:32 I'm Kiryoth. I want to be a shark. That's literally it. That's all I've got. Nice. I want to be that shark that has the teeth that goes inside. like internal. What?
Starting point is 00:00:46 There's a shark that has like teeth that like face inward so that when they, when they get fish, they can't escape. The goblin shark. Oh. I've said that out loud. I could be totally wrong. I think it's a goblin shock. It might be.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Yeah, yeah. No, it's definitely not that one, I don't think. Well, whatever. It sounds cool. It sounds dope. Bricky's a goblin shark, everyone. Hooray. I mean, that could be.
Starting point is 00:01:13 a goblin shark. Oh, no, it's a frilled shark. Friled shark. I want to be a frilled shark. There's multiple of these that have got the nightmare interior teeth. Cool. I love the ocean. Yeah, nature is crazy. I want to be the sharks that Vin Diesel is introducing to kids, the street shark commercial thing, where he's playing with action figures and telling you how cool they are. Yeah, I mean, look at this shit. Look at this shit. Wow, that thing is creepy as hell. Yeah, it's rowed as a row inward so it can't run away. It's terrifying. I hate that.
Starting point is 00:01:52 That's a horror movie monster. That's disgusting. Why would you want to be there? It's not even a shark. It's just fully an alien. That's just not. We've lost the plot. Oh, that's true.
Starting point is 00:02:05 We have lost the plot. You know, speaking of plot, welcome to our usual segment. of we talk slightly about Warhammer news or new things in the first five to ten minutes and then move on. We had the summer showcase last week on Friday. We did. Yeah, we did. I didn't watch it, but I heard the stuff that came from it. It had far more 40K than I expected it would.
Starting point is 00:02:35 Okay. That's, yeah. You know what? I will back you up on this. I thought it would be extremely 40K light. because we've just had the new edition, we've just had a brand new massive box. What else could they possibly put in there?
Starting point is 00:02:48 But you know what? Big, nice thing, nice thing. For the Adeptors custodians players, Games Workshop has finally realized that they can just put two logos on one box. That's nice. That's actually good news. The truck is better.
Starting point is 00:03:02 The truck is obviously far better news than that, but that feels like a big step for this company, frankly. Unironically, it really does. Also, a plastic telemon is, very much on my list of things I wanted. I'm a little ify on the bikes. I don't know if I like the bikes. They look a little too dildo-like.
Starting point is 00:03:21 You know, Chad Wharton don't want to play with no dildo. Wipes his ass. He got a sale. Chad Warren wipes his ass with $600. But, no, I don't know. It's a little odd. That being said, we do have Eldar Exodites back. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I love dinosaurs. Yeah, solid. They do look really good. There's one of them where their arms look almost too humanoid and it weirds me out a little bit. Whereas like riding them and the arms are just like very like just, oh man, that's not a dinosaur. That's just like, there's just like fucking human arms. Oh, the one that's got like, it looks like he's been lifting. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:03 It kind of weirds me out a little bit. I thought the same thing. I was like, that is a dinosaur that has been down the gym, you know, five times a week. It's just the, I think it's the posing, but it looks like the chest is just massive. Yeah, it's,
Starting point is 00:04:19 it's, that's, that's, that's, um, yeah, a, Zootopia,
Starting point is 00:04:24 uh, type of like, idea for all, for all them scaly's out there. Got to make sure you, you get it going, but no, the exonites look,
Starting point is 00:04:34 to take a page on a kreos book, proper awesome. In it? Sorry. Yeah, you got to get the in it. Yeah, you can't just not and get the internet. Come on, man. Actually, you should don't want to carry off.
Starting point is 00:04:46 I rescind my joking statement here. You are currently melting. Oh, that's fine to calm down. I don't want to, I don't want to think about it again. Okay. Also, yeah, the new orch truck is, I mean, you know, I got to say, because like, for me, I never think I ever saw an actual orc truck on the tabletop. I think I only saw converted deodorant packets and things like that.
Starting point is 00:05:11 But then they put the other old truck there. It's like, oh, yeah, that's what it looks like. And the new truck looks phenomenal, actually. I didn't see this one, actually. Everybody kept telling me about, like, the exudites and stuff and the custodies stuff. But nobody said anything to me about the truck, because I didn't watch the reveal, because I didn't realize it was happening. This looks great. It also looks like a great base for org players to Kit Bash as well.
Starting point is 00:05:39 If you want to just put a bunch of shit on it. It looks like a great base too. Yeah, I like the fact that a lot of the orcs kind of hanging out the side can be adjusted and the claws and like the guns. There really is a lot. And no, I agree with you, Shai. I actually do think the old truck does hold up. I just think that the new truck is just, it's just better, just glow up, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Old truck's still pretty nice, though. It feels like there's a lot more armor up front, which is nice. And I like the, I don't even know how to describe it, the big. bull bar like plow cow catch or whatever on the front also just a small thing just a little thing that i really like the uh the scoop for the blower for the v8 there's two different versions at least i just like that i quite like that's cruel and you being able to customize that that's fun i like it i like that they painted hot rod flames on the side hell you have to that's just sick as hell in red yeah you have to i also enjoy um i will say that uh looking at the orc codex
Starting point is 00:06:41 stuff actually has me very, very interested and curious about how they adjusted some of the rules things there. Because like, like for example, I know, D.K., I know you won't get this, but the orcs have had, their shooting has been struggling in this edition because they've removed the plus one your save for cover and instead made it a minus one to hit. And of course, the way math works is that the worse your hit roll is, the worse of minus will affect you. Because if you're hitting on fives and go to sixes, you lose half of your successes.
Starting point is 00:07:11 but they added like lethal hits to all the shooters but they specified it and said it's only against non-monstered vehicles so it's only against infantry and stuff so you're basically just like finding a bunch of random dudes and then just like just slamming as many six as you as you possibly can in that way I think it's kind of neat that's hell yeah I like that there's a real insane where like 60 boys just kills a night because you are lethal hit it to death funny but not necessarily satisfying for the people play there is
Starting point is 00:07:51 after I've got to throw this in as well just just in case just in case we don't even look at this guy at any point I know it's AOS but
Starting point is 00:07:59 oh the that's sick yes oh they're great I love the ogres they're phenomenal beating them and eating them I love their chant
Starting point is 00:08:10 first we're going to I'm gonna beat them, then we're gonna eat them. It's so good. They are a great refresh. I also love that their stomach armor is like it looks like an open maw around their belly because that's just what they're all about, is feeding the great maw. Oh, that's just, I love it. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:08:32 10 out of 10, no notes. It's genuinely like been a really, really good preview. There's just been so many cool things showing off. and like nice pleasant surprises as well like the, I had no idea the Oga Refresh was really happening outside of a bunch of like room range and images but also like even things like
Starting point is 00:08:50 old world, I mean that the new dragon, the new chaos dragon it looks like an older Games Workshop miniature but just updated which I, you know, I know they do that a lot but there's something like proper old school about this that just looks insanely cool.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Yeah, classic classic old world in the age of Sigmar are just absolutely winning when it comes to dope-ass minis. Minis, air quotes. Almost minis. And today they did reveal that Space Marines have got new Outriders.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Wait, do they actually? Exactly the... Yeah, yep. New multi, multi, like multi-part, non-push-fit outriders got shown off. They look... Really?
Starting point is 00:09:36 The same, understandably, because they're still just Outriders. but I mean, I'm hoping, having put some of the push-fit ones together myself, terrible. They're not good. So with any look, these will be a lot nicer, and you won't have horrible giganto seams running down the front of the armor. Oh, oh, so they're not actually new models.
Starting point is 00:09:57 They're just better. Constructed difference. Yeah. Okay, okay, okay. I was like, you're going to let the attack bikes languish and the outriders get an update or whatever it was? I was like, okay, I see now. Yeah, they look great.
Starting point is 00:10:09 I know nothing about writers other than what you just said but yeah, they look great. That's the thing. The redesign was pretty cool. They just were not good miniatures to put together. Yeah, it doesn't sound like it. But it's better in theory.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Hopefully. It wouldn't be hard. Mm-hmm. Sure. Well, shall we get rolling? Let's shall. Hey, are you enjoying the podcast? Are you enjoying our banter?
Starting point is 00:10:36 Maybe headn over to patreon.com slash Adeptus Ridiculous, where you can get access to the Discord, bloopers that happened, $15 tier gets you access to all of our posters in crispy digital form. It's great. You should check it out. Patreon.com slash Adeptus Ridiculous. Bricky, merch? Uh, yeah, merch. Merch. Merch has been moving along. Uh, it has been a lot of really good interest in the orders going on. The new hoodie, the new Rock Creek Possum shirt, the brand new card sleeves, the poster, all of that. All available now. Check out the description, Orchate 8. Great stuff. Production begins in July, as I mentioned. So we'll be starting to get rolling pretty much this week. You should start seeing some stuff coming your way. Hell yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Yeah, it should be pretty good. It'll be exciting. Hell yeah. Let's go. Love all that new stuff. It looks great. Yeah, now it's moving along. It's moving along. We finally moved offices. So that'll be a, that's good. We're kind of getting right back up to speed, so it's going to take a little bit of time. But I think it's slowly kind of settling down, which is great. Hell yeah. God, that must have been a nightmare moving offices. Moving houses is a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Moving offices got to be a disaster. No one got hurt and nothing broke. And that's all I cared about. Hell yeah, brother. Definitely the two most important things. Definitely. Yeah. Things are taking a little while to get out, obviously, because of the move.
Starting point is 00:12:03 But besides that, no one got hurt, no one got, nothing got. broken and we're back into production so I'm happy about it. Hell yeah. What are we doing today, Bricky? Well, mainly what I'm doing is I'm going to put a camera in front of the two of you and talk about how much you hate the Carcadons and how much you hate their books and how much you wish the writer could be put in the brass bowl. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Because that's the exact words you told me before you start this podcast, you know. That is literally. That is. identical actually. Remely inaccurate. That's what you said. Don't project on to us. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I said, wow, I really hate that we started a Warhammer podcast. This could have been a Mass Effect podcast instead. Oh, man, it could have been a Mass Effect podcast. Oh, well. Maybe if it was, I would have gotten things right. Speaking of getting things wrong, Carcadons. Get reduxed, idiot, carcaridons. Get rotated, idiot.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Hell yeah. Let's go. I mean, there's no quote. We knew it was coming. We knew this was happening. Carcaradon's books were read. Carcaridon's great. Well, we'll talk about it.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Yeah. So, like the long story short of this is that we did a Caradon's episode way back when, in the early era of Bricky is basically just learning about things through Wikipedia and occasional book snippets. And obviously, that wasn't enough. And not a lot of really great kind of in-depth stuff was happening back then. So then we got Possum and now Possum is going to do my job for me. And which I guess it's their job now, but whatever. So let's start off with the most important part about Carcaryon's.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Mass Effect. So in mass, in the second game of Mass Effect, we get Grunt's audio, like an audiobook in search history from the shadow broker. And he gets really into Ernest Hemingway for a bit, right? But he doesn't finish all of his books. But what he does finish is the old man, the sea. And after that, he immediately searches for information on sharks, which is awesome. Now, the old man to sea is a book about a man named Santiago who has not caught a fish for months. And on the 85th day, he manages to hook a gigantic marlin that he battles for days.
Starting point is 00:14:24 The whole thing is man versus nature at its peak and he begins to grow very delirious over it. As the fish weakens, something occurs that he did not properly prepare for. There's blood in the water. Even though he manages to catch his prize, the mako sharks pursue him. And they don't care about the struggle that he went through to get the Marlin. They smell this blood and they are hungry. And therefore, Santiago is left with nothing more than a skeleton as the Mako sharks retreat to the darkness. Now, the Carcarodons are a space marine lesion that doesn't care about the workings of the worlds they appear on.
Starting point is 00:15:02 In fact, more often than not, they have no idea. a conflict is happening when they arrive. Instead of blood in the water, they're driven by their ties. And they believe, uh, or the ties they believe are their birthright and their nomadic existence makes it fundamental to their existence. So you get a little bit of, uh, like a kind of a, uh, what's the thing?
Starting point is 00:15:25 What was it, something thread? A continuous thread. Yeah, loose thread. Yeah, yeah, between that kind of concept. Uh, now even though their first big appearance, in 40K was in the Imperial Armor Badap books in 2010. The Space Shark-style legions had been in the game all the way since Rogue Trader. Their more isolated in tribal nature was refocused, something much more Maori-focused,
Starting point is 00:15:49 thanks to the series of books by Robbie McNivim, if I said that right. And the Carcarodons have a pretty substantial fan base because of that. There's also another separate contemporary Carcaryon's novel that a lot of people have some very strong opinions on, And for some good reasons, Possum puts in a, in parentheses here. It's called Silent Hunters and Possum Reddit. And it does some cool things like Established Space Marines that are much older than Dante. There's a bit where Slanesh spits out the soul of a Jewkari because it was too excessive.
Starting point is 00:16:25 And another Drukari only being able to endure three days of isolation and torture, which ain't great. Yeah, that, whoof, boy, that's a lot. Also, Slanesh actually spitting out a Drukari soul because it's too much is, I can't even imagine what that Dracari is like. I just, it is unfathomable. There's no mental image attached to that. I can't even picture them. I mean, that's the thing, though. It's right.
Starting point is 00:16:54 You shouldn't have to because it's stupid. Yeah, okay, fair. Yeah, all right. That's true. It is a little kind of, this is the whole point of. this is the whole point of Samash. It's like, it's like corn going, you need to calm down with the killing. You've killed too much.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I won't, I won't have you as a champion. You've killed too much. Also, Space Marines older than Dante is kind of like a taboo, I think, besides like, yeah. Bjorin. Mm-hmm. Other than like a dreadnought or something, yeah. So, anyway, today we're going to revisit the Carcadons and go a bit more in-depth,
Starting point is 00:17:27 than the original episode, uh, average than the stuff that I originally went over way back. We'll talk more about their history, their vibe, and some of the events from the McNevan books as well. And so we can, um, dive into the depths of the Carcadon's. You got to stop, Hossum, you just, you got, you got to, you got to, you got to reel it in, I guess, huh? No, oh, real it in, brother. Smells a joke in the water and comes, and comes swimming. So the early history presumed here.
Starting point is 00:18:05 The story of the Carcarae on Astra likely begins well before the heresy. Prior to the rediscovery of their primark, the... What the hell is this one? 19th Legion was quite a bit different. The recruits for this Legion were from the Technobarbaric tribes of the Assyatic Dust Fields, and their tactics were less Ravenguard and a bit more Nightlords. They were a brutal Legion that would strongly. out of nowhere, but would leave terror in their wake. And it took the emperor quite a while to
Starting point is 00:18:35 find Korax, so the Legion was set in its ways for quite a while. Corax's prowess on deliverance helped cement him as a master of covert tactics. And when he met his Legion, he began to shape them more into his style. Fortunately for him, they had already had some degree of covert skills, but they also had the whole, like, we are brutal barbarians bit. And Korax didn't really like that. Now, the Legion had been more of an occupational force that was sort of reminiscent of these slavers. He actively rebelled against on deliverance. So Korax needed to clean house. He needed to clean up their doctrine and also removed the high-ranking officers from their positions.
Starting point is 00:19:13 And as one may remember, Korax dealt with like horrible slavers and stuff growing up. That was kind of his thing, which is why there's a bit of irony with him being so imperial or being part of it. But, you know, that is how it is. Yeah. So one key person that was removed here was legion master Arcus Fall, who had commanded the Legion for decades. Korax would assign Fall to a nomad predation fleet and ordered him to serve his Legion but as far away as possible, beyond the fringe and into the void, never to be seen by the Imperium again. In the mythology of the Carcaranon Astra is a tale of the day of exile, where the forgotten one was dispatched,
Starting point is 00:19:58 into the outer darkness. They were to ravage the foes of mankind until their final atonement. This would begin their long hunt, and they hunt still, to this day, their belief cemented in their favorite thing to say before they kidnap a whole bunch
Starting point is 00:20:14 of people. D.K., you're up first. Oh, boy, we are the Carcaryodon Astra, servants of the Void Father and the Imperium. We come to your world seeking a red tithe, as is our right, granted by the Forgotten One and the Day of Exile. Also, so it's...
Starting point is 00:20:34 Sorry, go on. Oh, I was going to say, so it's always been kind of known and established that they were Ravengard's successor, because until the books, I was like, I don't know if they were successor to who or what, they were just some random ass thing that was just in the outer fringes and just kind of doing their thing and collecting tides. And until we read the trilogy, I was like, I didn't know that. I believe it is a, maybe relatively new based on that book. And B, I believe it's why it's presumed, you know, like Corax did this thing with this one group and sent them really far away and that kind of lines up.
Starting point is 00:21:13 I mean, possibly put presumably in parentheses. So I think it's right, right. Who knows. Kiraath, did you have something you want to say? I just am now remembering again, which is one of the things that I found reading the reading the book. the choice of language around the Carcaraanastra is just really, really good. Like the whole thing of like the forgotten one, the day of the day of exile, it feels biblical in a weird way, but also that statement to just a random ass world that has never seen a
Starting point is 00:21:46 space marine before is borderline meaningless. But for some reason that makes them more cool than if they just spelt it out. I would agree. Having it almost mythological, I think adds a lot to it. Yeah. There's a real intrigue going on there. But anywho, so of course there's, well, actually, this is the next sentence. So damn you, D.K.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Of course, there's no 100% confirmation that the Carcaryodons are descended from the Ravenguard. You know, even though they have some relic armor that has a skull and a lightning bowl on it. And hell, there's no record of these guys in any administratum-wide. thing and the records of their history are is essentially retained as some sort of mythology but it's one of those things that's all but confirmed especially considering their connection to the
Starting point is 00:22:35 renegade ashen claws and hell I mean at a base level the space sharks share the brunt of the gene seed degradation of the raven guard that results in their pale skin and pitch black eyes yeah it it lines up so it's not it's not a big leap
Starting point is 00:22:50 now we'll talk more about the ashen claws a bit later but they too were the result of a nomad predation fleet sent out after Korax returned to the Imperium. They were sent to the guru stars and their interactions with the Carcadons show that they are closely interconnected. But something has changed over the centuries of exile. During a meeting with Ash and Clause chapter master at Nahat Nev, he snaps at Bail Shah, calling him a mongrel and traitor-born scum. Schar tries to say that they have with them pure genetic legacy of Nev's ancestors,
Starting point is 00:23:25 To which he responds, you have not contaminated it with your disgusting breed. To say that. This, of course, does imply the gency of the space sharks might be chimeric. It could be that they added whatever genesis they could to help support or sort of expand out their greatly reduced bloodline. And this is likely a direct result of their lifestyle, harvesting what isn't bolted down to use and keep going. So, void life. The basis of the Carcadon's existence is built into the fact they are a nomadic predation fleet. They don't have the luxury of having the full support of other forces that fight for the emperor like the ad mech or the guard and don't really have the opportunities to get stuff from the administrative directly.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And obviously, no luxury of a home world either. Now, they do have some worlds that they use as places where they can reconvene in such, including the lost world. Their lack of consistent new resources, mostly evident in their armor, as they are really big fans of the market. Mark 5 Harrisy armor as well as the much older weaponry. Now, their fleet-based nature combined with the need to be as self-sufficient as possible has made them borderline independent corsairs for quite some time while deep out in the void. But, of course, this life is pretty harsh, and it's only gone worse since the tyranids have shown up.
Starting point is 00:24:44 Now, their flagship is the Nicar, which is a cherub dice. How do they say it in the book? I forget. I don't remember, to be honest with you, how they... said. I remember it was the, I think they pronounced it the NICOR, but it doesn't matter. I don't remember what kind of ship they specifically said it was, though.
Starting point is 00:25:02 I mean, it's spelled like Cherib D-Y-S, cherub D-D-S, I don't know. But it's a classic, it's a grand crew. Okay. I'm sorry, I could help it. I could feel that coming.
Starting point is 00:25:17 Like, I could literally, I knew it's going to happen. I couldn't even stop myself. I was like, don't do it. Help me. go. There it is. Just like an unnatural reaction. Sorry, go ahead. And here we are. Yeah. Um, but it's an old Grand Cruiser from the heresy that's been quite heavily modified over the years. And it's even got this big ass fish tank in the middle of it, uh, which seems to have a me megalodon-esque giant shark lurking in its waters, which is just so funny to me.
Starting point is 00:25:47 We love it when GW writers are just on the nose as possible, right? Yeah. Yeah. The, Look, we've got a brand. We need to make it very clear what the brand is. Get the giant fish tank installed right now. The shark, like, you know, you know they sit down. They're like, the shark, the shark chapter has to have a shark, right? Obviously. It just clearly makes sense.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Yeah, we're GW. The space sharks are never subtle about anything. We're never subtle about anything. Slaughter, slaughter, slaughter, slaughter. Shark, shark, shark. Why not? Now, this, along with their various other cruisers, allow them to partake in the two things that sustain them, which is the gray tithe and the red tithe, each of which are sustained by a unique type of captain. So we'll start with the gray tithe.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Keriath, for you. Sorry. Hail and well-met, servant of the machine god. I am Akamu, Harvester Prime and Captain. I bid you welcome to the life. lost world on behalf of my void, brethren. We are here seeking the beneficence of the great tithe. All will be is the On this eye wills, Otty said, giving the ritual response. Both spoke in high Gothic. I call upon you, Harvester Prime Akamu, to deliver a hallowed oath that you'll protect me and my binaic congregation for as long as we remain upon this world, and that no harm will
Starting point is 00:27:13 befall us while under your stewardship. I make this oath gladly and freely, Akami responded, the word scraping through his helmet's Vox Grill like a blade over a wet stone, with my void brethren and Great Rangu as my witness. Great Rangu. That's their word for the emperor. That's what they call them. Hell yeah. I kind of love that too.
Starting point is 00:27:37 So while traveling across the depths of the galaxy, the sharks will come across many of things. Some of these things will be basic goods and items that they can just kind of pick up and use. And other things have a bit more value, mainly ancient. archaotech. The Carcarodons Harvester Prime, it's the second company captain, is able to suss out which things are likely of great value, and we'll work out a deal with the Mechanicus and a ritual known as the Great Tithe. In a sense, it's a big old swap meet where the Carcarodons will present the Admec, who are honestly really anxious around these guys with some wild archaeotech they find,
Starting point is 00:28:12 and in exchange, the admec will show them the goods, but not just any goods, sometimes real fresh goods. Now in Adder Dark, we see one of these gray ties take place and it takes about half a day for it to complete. The tech that was provided by the sharks was so good, in fact, that the ad mec provided them with two land raiders, a few rhinos and ten suits of tactical dreadnought armor, which is what, Dekh? What do you mean is what? Is it, what? What is tactical dreadnought armor? Well, that's armor that a dreadnought wears, obviously. Kiryoth, would you like to correct him? Terminator armor. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Oh. I don't know why I wasn't expecting it to... I don't know why I wasn't expecting the answer to be that... Okay, well... Don't... Listen, dude. I was overthinking it, I guess. We just talked about the Megalodon and the fish tank. We don't need to worry about it.
Starting point is 00:29:05 We sure did. I don't know why I thought it was something a little more complicated than that, but all right, that's fine. No, yeah. Tactical Dreadnought armor is a Terminator armor. Like a Dreadnought. is a dreadnought. Right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:19 Anyway, the dreadnought armor was still in its plastic wrap, so the painted, I mean, service the armor would be protected from any wear and care, which I, now, now here's my time to be a goofy. I don't think they can make Terminator armor again, or at least they couldn't, maybe like 10, 15 years ago when I was understanding more hammer, they may have changed that recently. I think I am also, I'm also on that side.
Starting point is 00:29:44 I'm pretty sure they can't make it. it can just be repaired at this point. I think stuff like the, like the, the stuff the aggressors wear, Gravis armor, that can be manufactured and stuff, but I'm pretty sure Terminator armor is still like, is still either, either can only be produced like in one place in the entire Imperium
Starting point is 00:30:02 or is borderline impossible to replace at this point. Yeah, I do remember us talking about how that's why it's so damn important that you only feel determined when you have to. And if you lose one, you have to reclaim its arms. because you're not getting more. There we go. So as Shire said,
Starting point is 00:30:20 although the adeptive's mechanic still maintains limited production of Terminator suits, the rate is so slow that often a new suit is cobbled together from refurbished parts salvaged from the battlefield. So it's just you've got to wait a long time for a fresh one. Yeah. I think the gray tide takes place at the very beginning of Outer Dark, right? Like, that's the first thing that we see, I think.
Starting point is 00:30:40 It's real early. Yeah. Now, even though they get the tanks and stuff and things to add to their amount of vehicles and all that. They're not really utilized that much when they go on a fight. The sharks much prefer utilizing their void brothers to go out and fight directly and as fast and quick as they can. Much like a shark. Shock assaults up close out of nowhere are their preferred means of attacking.
Starting point is 00:31:04 And if the enemy proves to be a bit more stubborn and resistance, they will back off. Partially to preserve their numbers, which are very thin, but also to strike at another angle until eventually the enemy caves. You would, oh my God, shy. You would think they would like tanks, shark tank. Hey. I would have given that a plus two. But that's the clarification. Yeah, yeah, you ruined up by explaining the joke.
Starting point is 00:31:33 I've never done that in my life. Yeah, same, dude. Now, obviously, in addition to that, though, they back off to preserve their numbers because are very thin, but also to, you know, deal with angles and all stuff. Now, the way they appear in a system is also very shark-like. They don't like to make their presence known until the moment they're about to strike. So their ships arrive quietly, even with dimmed lights and move slowly until they speed up and attack.
Starting point is 00:31:58 This is proven to be very helpful in the void, as quite a few of their conflicts have evolved them, evolving, showing up someplace, expecting one thing and seeing another. They'll show up for the red tide, and instead they'll find some sort of uprising or assault from another faction and their quiet and stealthy nature allows them to change their tactics before dealing with whatever terror they find. Now, of course, so much terror in the volume means that when you need to replenish your numbers, it has to be pretty often. Maybe it's Astardis or Serfs, and that's where we get the red tithe.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Brunted by the head of third company known as the Reaper Prime. Our boy, let's go. Now, prior to the aptly titled Red Tithe, we get a story that really does a good job summing this whole thing up. The world of Zartak fell into the stereotypical fate that most well-off civilized worlds do in the Imperium, which is that the elites got a bit greedy, and they decide that maybe they should take a bit off the top when it came to the normal tides of the Ataman team of the Imperium. A little off the top would turn into capturing all the people on the planet with some kind of imperial authority and going dark for a few. years. And so the Imperium would then try to click the tide and these vessels would be knocked out of commission. Because that's, we need to destroy our Asaka headquarters. Of course. Also, man,
Starting point is 00:33:21 just keep taking a little off the top, man. As long as you keep sending in the tide, they would have never known. But you got greedy. You wanted too much. Now you're screwed. Now space sharks are showing up. Come on, man. I don't care who the Imperium sends. I am not sending the tithe. Worst move ever in 40K is not sending the... Just send the damn tithe. Even the Imperium is not immune to the billionaire mindset, it turns out. Yeah, the only difference here, though, is that they actually stop them.
Starting point is 00:33:53 Yeah. Yeah, true. Now, one day, a bunch of space marines would show up seemingly out of nowhere, and the council that now ruled this world would meet the company master, and would inform them that they were in charge. The company master would respond by simply saying, we are the Carcarradons Astra and we have come for you, which is very nightlorsy.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Yes, she is. Reports would go out to the other members of the council, kind of misinterpreting what the company master said, and they would be concerned that these guys actually cared about the imperial tithe. The council on the planet would try to lure the planets like Carcadon's into a trap set up in the minds of the world, but they would fail to account for the pre-concordial. cognitive abilities of the librarian present.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Do you guys remember how to pronounce this one? Tecaharanghi? Yeah, tecaharanghi. Tecaharangi, okay. I remember the first time I heard it in the audiobook. I thought his name was Taker, like someone that takes stuff, uh, harangy. And it was like, and I read it like in text and I was like, oh,
Starting point is 00:34:55 that's like T.E. apostrophe. And it's very weirdly spelled. So, yeah. Apparently, Caharangi is the Maori noun for dark blue. Oh, cool. That's actually dope. I like that.
Starting point is 00:35:08 It's not subtle, but it's cool. Now, they would learn to the extent of the revolution that happened and would find that those are being held captive, including a boy named Kederik, who the librarian took special concern with. Believing still that these were indeed the emperor's angels, the overthrown rebellious planetary leaders, thought they would get some kind of due process. The due process started with that one of them saying, is this the leader of the rebellion before snapping the man's neck? When one of the freed imperial said that the due process needed to be displayed for the rest of the colony, the response would be, you can still display them before saying that they were here to reap this world, not to judge before activating his chain axe and commencing the executions. It's so good.
Starting point is 00:35:52 It's pretty, it's pretty good. I like this, I like the fact that they deserve it because. Oh, yeah, 100%. Well, because like the exact same thing happened in that orc book. with the Black Templar's sort of kind of, except they just didn't deserve it. It's the exact same, except it's not. I love how, um, I love Black Templar slander.
Starting point is 00:36:17 It's the best one out there. You got to be careful about those fans, though, man. You don't want them on your heels. There is no better modern orc book than an orc book that lets the orcs be the orcs and a bunch of black Templars spend most of their time killing civilians. It's perfect for me. Perfect. Thank you very much, Denny Flowers.
Starting point is 00:36:37 Anyway, after the rebellious leaders returned into party favors that were used to decorate the cranes around the town, which is for those who have not read the books, not a joke, they literally strung their inerons and body parts everywhere. Yeah, they sure do. The freed former planetary governor would proclaim this is what justice was, and that the emperor's holy angels
Starting point is 00:36:57 would now take the tide that was long overdue. Great news! except instead of taking adamantium, they would start to grab as many of the workers and push them away. She would ask what was happening instead of that we thought you were here for the tide before Takeah wrong,
Starting point is 00:37:13 you would clarify that they had actually no idea what was happening on this world before they showed up. The debts of the world does not concern them. They came for the red tithe, their own tide. And the shafts of the mine would descend into screaming chaos for you, D.K.
Starting point is 00:37:29 Ah, as the sink shafts descended into screaming chaos, Takaharanghi watched Kedric. The boy alone didn't react as those around him were snatched and subdued by the silent giants. He didn't react as his shrieking grandmother was picked up as easily as a parent might lift a child and taken towards the waiting flyers.
Starting point is 00:37:48 He didn't react as the skies filled with the fat-bellied shuttle sows that would take the population of Zartak to the white maw's slave bays. He watched it all with dull dead eyes. Takaharangi touched upon his mind and knew that the boy had already begun his first steps towards initiation. If he survived, he would bear an honor name, a rarity among the Carcarradon Astra. I love kidnapping people. I love it.
Starting point is 00:38:17 They're my favorite things. Are we the baddies? They know what they're doing. And they're also very clear and upfront about it. Like just taking the population of Zatak to the White Moors slave bays. Not like the barracks or the brig. The serfs quarters. Yeah, the same thing as slave bays, but just nicer.
Starting point is 00:38:46 Yeah, it's just fully like, well, yeah, they call that because that's where the slaves go. Yeah. Oh, okay. We're just going straight in with it. All right, sure. You're going to the slave bays because that's where we bay our slaves. Yeah, that's where we put the slaves. Settlety was never their strong suit.
Starting point is 00:39:02 They have a tank with a shark in it, Karioth. You know what, fair. Absolutely fair. Of course they have a slave bay. Their probable gene sire is Corvus Korax. Only second to Ferris Manus in terms of nomadic name or deterministic naming sequences. Now, the entire population will be whisked away by the Carcadon's, resulting in the world being abandoned.
Starting point is 00:39:31 The Imperium would eventually send a second attempt to claim the tithe and find that the world was, in fact, completely abandoned. Bad for the tithe, but great for the subsector auto clerk who was looking for a place to put up a new penal colony. And the name of that boy, eventual third company master Bail Schar. That's how we get John Spacark because he was brought to the slave bays and recruited. Mm-hmm. He sure was. Now, the red tie is, as the chapter says, one of their edicts that permits them to spear away a planet's population for new recruits, serve slaves, and more. Of course, just because this is one of their edicts does not mean it's one of those good things for everyone involved.
Starting point is 00:40:15 It tends to be, as seen above, horrifically brutal. It just doesn't help that the attrition rate of new aspirants is also super high in the ranks of the Carcadons. But there is another way they can get more recruits and materials. We'll talk about that later. So, shark blood is thicker than water. Now that we've talked about their ties, let's talk about what makes them unique, the gene seed. As we said at the start, they have some of the key markers of the Ravenguard defects being super pale skin, deep black eyes, and a little bit of the lack of care for others. But the differences between when it comes to their other prominent, or sorry, the differences begin when it comes to their other prominent traits, being the extreme and unrelenting bloodlust and insatiable aggression.
Starting point is 00:41:00 Now, in the gladiatorial pit of the Ashen Clause, Bail Shah is challenged to fight a member of the world eaters that has been locked up. Nev describes this world eater as a vile breed that was unfortunate enough to survive, but also says that he could well be a brother to you. Of course, outside of the general hatred that the Ashen Clause have for the sharks, this is a pretty pointed this you moment on the end of the claws, comparing their potential gene brother is something as brutal as a world eater. Now, their brutality can manifest to something akin to a shark-like feeding frenzy. The blindness, as it's called, is when a member of the Carcadon's goes mad,
Starting point is 00:41:40 overwhelmed with an urge to continue killing until they themselves are brought down in conflict. Those who suffer the blindness are, for the most part, abandoned by their chapter and left to fight as void exiles until the day of their death comes. Now, this may sound slightly familiar. The Ravenguard deal with something called the Sable brand that results
Starting point is 00:42:00 in the afflicted Raven's eyes going completely black and being overwhelmed with a cold-blooded, overwhelming urge to fight without any self-regard in that state. Now, the state's not permanent, but those impacted by it deal with some of the side effects of it permanently. It also has ways to curb it now in the form of the trifle path of shadow, so it's not too big of a deal,
Starting point is 00:42:21 but if left alone, it can be pretty bad. The Sable brand also has another name, though, which is Ash Blindness. Once again, tying the shark. directly to the Ravens. Have, did we talk about, have we done a Ravenguard episode? Because I'm like, I don't remember that being a thing that afflicted them, the Sable brand.
Starting point is 00:42:41 I mean, it might have just been from an episode a long time ago and I just forgot because that's just what I do. I did not know they did that or they had that like affliction. Yeah, yeah. I think it's because we haven't talked about Ravengard. God knows how long. They're also not brought up much because they're forgotten often. They don't get a lot of spot like the Ravengard overall
Starting point is 00:43:03 I was going to say Sable Brand sounds like such a cool thing too Like it's like this I mean not not cool It's like a you know Like a unique thing and I was like damn I didn't I didn't realize they had that It's kind of sick Yeah no I mean I gotta be honest I actually can't even remember what the gene seed failure is for like the white scars Because we so rarely ever talk or hear about it
Starting point is 00:43:24 Oh that's true But yeah Anyway, though their skin is pale, like most sons of corax, the sharks deal with something a bit more unique as they get older. The elders will begin to develop shark skin, denticles, as they're called, as a, sorry, they are a protective, goodness gracious, layer of enamel skins that protect the skin of a shark. For the space sharks, these denticles are a bit more scab-like that give their skin a very scaly texture. Bail Shar, who is younger than most of the folks all things consider him, remarks on how he had begun to find them forming on his elbows and shoulder joints, whereas Tay Karangi is covered in them.
Starting point is 00:44:08 Some actually have them implanted, like a Tangata Manus, who has the teeth taken from his foes for them to be surgally implanted into his skin, because these guys are normal. I was about to say this is so fucking weird, dude. Why would you do that? Such an insane thing to do. it's just the teeth it's so creepy there is just something creepy about that specific part of the body being like i'm not just going to take this i'm gonna i'm gonna wear it like no stop now their shark-like skin is complemented by the rituals of the chapter some of which make them more shark-like the carcarodons are also highly religious more so than the average imperial and during the conflict of bad-ab it was
Starting point is 00:44:54 were marked how they would actually go out of their way to spare places of imperial worship from attack. But the way they practiced this is a bit different than their space marines, as you can imagine. They carry devotional items in prayer script, but these are marked alongside other markings. Tokens of fanged maws, sharks, bloody wounds. They review the forgotten one who brought them here during the day of exile, as well as the void father who is his sire. And above the void father is Rangu, which is similar to the name of the name of the day of exile, the Skyfather Ranghi in Maori mythology or Maori.
Starting point is 00:45:28 I always forget how it's, is Maori? I think it's Maori, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Something the Imperium referred to as evidence of primitivistic ideology. There's like four eyes in that room. Ideology that was due to the impenetrable culture developed over a millennia of near isolation.
Starting point is 00:45:49 But they just don't understand the tight unity these guys have. the white or red markings they have on their armor is known as their exile markings, and they are a sign of honor. These swirling patterns are heavily notated etchings that represent a deed the Battle Brother has done that has been recognized by another. They also go under their skin as well with dark tattoos contrasting with the plaid shark-like skim. Continue with the whole shark bit. It's mentioned how all the aspirants of the Carcarodon swim with the sharks during their inductions and meditate on their nature. or like actually. Yeah, actually swim with the sharks.
Starting point is 00:46:27 They actually swim with the sharks. Actually, yeah. In the tank. Now, see, so you mocked it, but, you know, it's got a purpose. It's not just for brand recognition. There's definite, you know, method behind the madness of that. See, now I'm expecting, uh, now I'm expecting all the Carcadons to have like, Italian mobster voices instead of Maori ones and be like,
Starting point is 00:46:50 hey, you swim with the fishes, kid. You're going to be wearing some cement shoes if you don't get those psychrabilities going, kiddo. Give it the red tithe. But to them, the shark is who they are and what they understand themselves to be, mighty predators that they reflect philosophically in their lives, going as far as to file their teeth into a more serrated-like bit of a shark. Yeah, and every single space shark. member has to have a Vlaha or whatever IKEA shark in their room.
Starting point is 00:47:28 They are, after all, transhuman physiology. Nice. Now, silence is a big thing with the Carcadons in every aspect of their lives as well, as this is a discipline to be taken very seriously. While out in the
Starting point is 00:47:44 void, speaking is exceptionally rare, and the bays of their dreadnots are places for silent meditation. On the battlefield, they fight as silently as possible. Outside of the occasional order or tactical update, the battlefield is a continuation of their quiet meditation. While the yelling and guttural screaming is a big old taboo, they certainly want to do it, you know, with the whole full of bloodlust thing, but they force themselves to remain as sound as possible to maintain their order and to prevent
Starting point is 00:48:13 the blindness. Aren't they usually in like cryosleep when they're not like doing all their tithing and stuff, like in between, um, stuff so you just cryosleeping. They mostly As far as I know, they mostly are like performing duties aboard the ship and stuff. I think there is a bit of cryosleep going on. Some of it is also down to,
Starting point is 00:48:37 in the second book, there's a lot of emphasis placed on the dreadnought and the way that they're kind of kept under and those are like kept properly properly asleep, especially we'll get to it later, I'm sure. But put one specific dreadnought that's sort of losing his mind a little bit.
Starting point is 00:48:55 But I think for the most part, the rest of them get on with stuff as normal. Yeah, I might have just been confusing how much emphasis they put on making sure the dreadnought was asleep because that's just what dreadnoughts do when you don't wake him up. They really did. They really wanted to emphasize this guy is very slow and very, very quiet. So now we have the red wake and the ashen claws. Now, the leader of the space sharks, Mr. Tiberos the Red Wake. Now, it's actually not his actual, oh, sorry, very likely not his actual name, more so a title.
Starting point is 00:49:30 And there's a little line in the outer dark that kind of talks about this, Kyrioth. The Reaper Lord of the Void, said Neve, his voice crackling from the Nikors Vox speakers. Is it still the Red Wake who wears that battleplate, or has Tyberos changed once again? Damn. It's a title-y thing. Yeah. Now, this could also be the case with their chief librarian, Tehaharani. His full title is Tehaharanji, the pale nomad and the Maori word for Karanghi, compares to dark blue as discussed, which is most likely why librarians, or librarians wear
Starting point is 00:50:07 their dark blue armor, regardless of chapter. And that's probably why the name is like that. Now, the Red Wake has almost never been seen out of his Terminator armor. and drink if you've heard that before. Oh, and if you want to drink again, get ready for this one. Despite wearing Terminator armor, he moves impossibly fast. No way. That just doesn't happen with Terminator's ever.
Starting point is 00:50:32 Especially named ones? Never. He shouldn't be moving that quick. It's too fast. This is so weird. It's Terminator plate. It's so heavy. How can he be moving like that?
Starting point is 00:50:43 Oh, my goodness. There's a nice thing in the second book where they talk about his. Terminator Armather, though, where they're like, it mentions specifically there's like extra like, like servo bundles, like cables and stuff to enable him to be quicker, which is, yeah, it does, doesn't it? Yeah, it's, it's a nice thing to justify the, you know, the usual thing of this guy is so much faster than he should be, just like all the other guys who's so much faster than they should be.
Starting point is 00:51:12 Yeah, at least he has a reason. He's not just like, oh, he's just cracked out of his mind because we need him to be cracked out of his mind. At least they try to like explain it. Yeah. Also, yeah, it's by the same time, you know, which way Western male doing it that way or yeah, Logan Grimnar is just that fast because he's him. I've always been a big fan of the because he's him answer. I don't know. Yeah. Anyway, now, of course, he is equipped with two. gauntlets that are barbed with teeth called hunger and slake. They're exceptionally ornate and they're also not really his to own. They were stolen from the ashen claws by the Carcadon's and the Ashen Clause are really upset about that.
Starting point is 00:52:02 Yeah. Now, they're not too happy about how they are deeply intertwined with the Garcaranont, the Ashen Clause, that is. And they both have things that are ultimately needed from one another. They have a pact with them where the sharks provide supplies. and the Clause provide units, a relationship with a renegade legion that's highly unusual with a legion that is ultimately loyalist. And it can't be stated enough that these space sharks are loyalist and they are proud of it. They do make slaves all the time.
Starting point is 00:52:35 And sure, during the book of the Robbie and McNiven books, they're making it painfully clear that they are actively trying their best to remain as hidden from the Imperium as possible because they know for a fact the imperial of a big old problem with their methods, but they still serve the oath at their founder swore that resulted in them becoming void hunters. They also have no problem talking shit about the Astro Clause and their loyalty shown by Bail Schar, if you would like to, D.K. If I turned back now, I would not be a son of the forgotten one. You dishonor his name. We have not forgotten him. and yet you no longer serve him.
Starting point is 00:53:14 We do. Perhaps we will find out soon enough, Carcarodon. I like how he lagged a little bit when he said Carcadon, and so it was just like, Carcadine. They went very palpidine for some of that. Well, that's the vibe, right? No, Caracadon.
Starting point is 00:53:38 Now, for some early shark encounters, despite the fact that they've remained mostly hidden, there are quite a few sightings of them prior to the events of the Spake Shark books, at least according to Imperial History. They were involved in the War of the False Primark at M33, which has largely been put to myth in the history of the Imperium. The High Lords tasked five loyal chapters to destroy 11 others that have been declared traitors during this war.
Starting point is 00:54:04 But the most interesting early interaction took place during the 7th Black Crusade in M37. but was specifically in a document called the Canticle of Cassandria Lev. This account was written by St. Lev, and it's pretty highly mythologized, but reading through it, you can find things that very much refer to the sharks. It's written about how a gray-clad chapter arrived from the outer night to aid the Imperium, with a jagged maud which swall the stars, and a black gaze that mirrored the void of oblivion. The ships of this fleet beeline it towards Abidon's forces until they defeated the blood angels at medium. Or sorry, after they defeat the blood angels, Abidon's forces, that is. The attack is described as being a furious assault, much like the fury of a beast that lurks in black waters. Death for death, blood for blood.
Starting point is 00:54:55 They saved the blood angels, but the blood angels did not like what they saw. And in the crypts were the honored dead of Midian live. There is a fresco representation of the Marines who saved the blood angels, but there are, faces are obscured with disks of obsidian. Ah, yeah. Because they have a bunch of freaks. They're a bunch of weirdo. We didn't like
Starting point is 00:55:16 what we saw. Yep, yep. So, then you go back to the M-41 in the Badav War. M-401 is when the Carcaryodons really began to show their teeth. Oh, boy. All right.
Starting point is 00:55:32 Explored or Flea. Fuck you, shy. Shark tank asshole I mean she's not wrong I just read the script Explorator fleet Hydrax Lambda 15 would encounter a huge
Starting point is 00:55:50 Ork Terror ship but it was drifting silently. They would board the ship and find a somewhat recent massacre where the orcs were quite literally torn to bits or in this case Gubbins Now in one of their gun deck chambers, orks remained
Starting point is 00:56:05 piled high up several meters up and on top was an aquila surrounded by totems covered in teeth. Hanging from them was a prayer scroll that said Carcarodon Astra by the emperor, it is willed. The remains of the ship were cast into the sun. In the Battle of M41, that was the Battle of Zartak, with the Carcarodons would make their way to Zartac to claim their red tide and would find themselves face to face with another notably violent force being the nightlords. Amon Cole, which to say, summoned the demon Bargul, and he felt that Mika Doran Skel, a young cyker, was the perfect conduit. Skell made their way to Tsar tack, and the nightlords would commandeer a penal ship to make their way to the surface.
Starting point is 00:56:50 Sharr and his men made their way to the tunnels of the surface after taking care of the demons on the penal ship, and they find themselves trapped, halting their attempts to find Skel before the nightlords did. The night lords ended up capturing Skel and prepared the ritual to make him a vessel for the demon, while preventing any meaningful movement on the end of the sharks. The defeat of Tehaharanji at the hands of Nightlord's sorcerer shed draeth almost completely assured his victory for them. That is until we get a little bit of chaos infighting and a betrayal at the hands of Amon Cole. He meant well for sure, but his whole stalling of the ritual allowed for Tay to disrupt the
Starting point is 00:57:27 void shields and allow the Carcaryodons to teleport him. Amon Sharr had a fight with Cole. Cole knocks his ass down. Kehara Ongi proceeds to cast falling building on coal, killing him and causing the rest of the night lords to escape. And the Carcaradons win their prize, the prisoners on the world. Yippee! Yay! Slavery!
Starting point is 00:57:49 Yeah, get him into those slave bay. The slave bay is full. I like the, what's that one meme of that, the guy who swallows all the pills and he's like, today's topic, slavery. I'll be honest That's a super specific one That I'm not familiar Yeah I don't know that
Starting point is 00:58:11 I was kind of bummed that Amon Kull didn't get a little Better of a send-off than just like Oh yeah the building fell in him Because he he almost beats Reaper Prime Doesn't he? Yeah but it's yeah it's close It's real close
Starting point is 00:58:27 Yeah so I was kind of bummed that like Oh yeah I cast falling building on you And it's like really that's it for him He's not going to come back. There's no, all right, that's fine, I guess. I mean, doesn't the building fall on him in, like, a very, like, ah, he might live part? I don't remember if they specifically stayed.
Starting point is 00:58:44 It definitely feels that way, yeah. Okay. I don't remember if they specifically stated, like, and his brains exploded all over the floor. I don't remember. No, they never specifically, like, show his body or anything. I just remember being bummed that that was, like, the last of him, because I don't know, I kind of liked him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:59:01 But, night lord. I think he showed up again. Nightlord are diabolical. They're funny. Oh, yeah. It's, to me, I see, I, I, I love the, the trilogy as much, of course, obviously. But, um, obviously they're not like, as night lordy as most nightlords are. Sometimes when there's a book and there's a night lord guy there, I just love him just
Starting point is 00:59:20 arriving and being like, I'm here to like murder everyone and hang their entrails because it's funny. And also because fuck you. Like, I just great. I don't know, man. We made a river of blood because we just think it's cool. And it's like, oh, great, dude, thanks. Yeah, I'm drinking from the river of blood of your friends and families because the emperor is a pussy.
Starting point is 00:59:47 Least, least torturous night lord. Most innocent night lord ever. Anyway, the real Maya of the Carcadons was in the middle of the bad ab war. Seemling out of nowhere, their fleet showed up on the edge of the Golgoth and wastes, as both sides of the conflict had no idea what the hell this was. It was a ramshackle fleet with a single battle barge, and the ships really matched up and Tiberos, this is a misspell here,
Starting point is 01:00:14 Tiberos to Ted Wake. Oh, no. As it turns out, Ted Zero, our thumbnail artist, was in it all along. Oh, wait, I totally forgot. We mentioned Dante this episode. You know what that means, Ted? Oh, let's go, featuring Dante.
Starting point is 01:00:31 Let's come put the same. stamp on it, put the stamp on it! Let's go! Let's go. Um, but, uh, Tiberos would, the Ted wake would introduce himself as the first captain and he was surprisingly cooperative. He provided proof of their notices patent and even agreed to psychic probing for the inquisitors. The other space sharks weren't as agreeable, but neither was the conflict. The imperial of needed forces and the fray and they were acceptable enough to throw out into the conflict zone, despite many of their folks being really wary about these guys hanging out in the void. Now, their first appointment was on the endymion cluster, not the front line, as it was a bit late in the game,
Starting point is 01:01:10 but this place was where the Mantis Warriors were based out of. The Mantis Warriors have been reduced quite a bit to the point of guerrilla resistance. So the Carcarodons showed up and they had an answer to the Mantis Warrior issue, basically being systemic purging and total annihilation. They wiped out populations, destroyed infrastructure, rendering the planet useless. And worst of all, they'd leave. survivors, all of which suffering greatly and were horrifically mutilated him. The Magnus warriors would
Starting point is 01:01:36 come to the aid of those who were suffering, which was really nice of them to do, you know. And it was also nice because the Carcaryodons didn't have to hunt them in the first place. Within a year, the cluster would be completely crushed by the shark cementing their effectiveness despite their methods.
Starting point is 01:01:52 Sick, bro. It's so horrific. We're going to leave a couple space marines here missing all of their limbs and when you come back to get them, we're going to ambush you. Yeah. Yeah. That's rough.
Starting point is 01:02:06 That's also, that's the bit of art that Shai posted earlier. That's from that conflict, isn't it? Because it's that one-armed mantis warrior facing off against, look, in the book, it's like he's a head tall than a Terminator. I swear, every time, every time, like, Tybrus shows up in art, he is at least a foot taller than he was previously. He's like, more than a half-sized. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:31 He looks Primark size here. It looks wrong. It's cool art, but it looks incorrect. Yeah. He looks like he's the size of like Horace or something. It's crazy. This is our leader. He is a school bus in armor.
Starting point is 01:02:46 That's what we've got. I'm sure that's fine. What's his name? Oh, the Ted week. So they'd be rerouted to their final attack on Bad M. Primus. or yeah, baden primus, and would commit a monumental bloodbath against the defenders
Starting point is 01:03:04 and systematically break the hives' resistance both in soldiers and in infrastructure. The sabotaging of the reactor cores would cause the hive to erupt and spread devastation all across bad at primaris. Oh yeah, that's why. It was another typo. Bad damn Primaris.
Starting point is 01:03:19 God damn you possum. But one last thing they wanted to do, in an event now known as the sorrow of tranquility, they would return to the endymian cluster and brutally bring these worlds into compliance, punishing those who surrendered. The Carcarodons would focus quite heavily on the tranquility system in particular, because this is where the system was for the Mantis Warriors training and recruitment. They would ransack the entirety of this area and would harvest a generation of males to fill in the losses of the chapter, forcing them all to fight to the death to prove their worth. And I think it's decay, or is it? Curioth now.
Starting point is 01:03:59 Uh, yeah, I think it's Curioth. Gotcha, there you go. Thus paid in blood, the Carcaryden's fleet departed the cluster, with explorator augurs marking its course through the warp as ascending the galactic plane into the darkness of the outer void once more. That goes hard. That is great. I was going to say, and everyone receives a happy ending, I guess.
Starting point is 01:04:24 Not really. The sighs of relief were hurt across. the sister. Now, the next major conflict would be on Piety 5. This conflict started after a really scuffed meeting with their pals, the ashen claws, and the ghoul scars. The Carcarodons wanted to tap into their old pact with them and get more recruits, so they sent out Bailshar and take a harangu to do so.
Starting point is 01:04:51 Chapter master in a hot and evergreen, so long as Tiberos gave up the relics of his chapter in exchange for the troops. Now, what do you think Shower said to giving up the relics of their chapter? Oh, shoot. I think Bail Shar doesn't he specifically say, like, I can't promise anything, but all these, all these give it a shot. Oh, it was something like that? Was it direct confirmation, but he just knew he was lying? I mean, it would have been that.
Starting point is 01:05:21 I was curious because Possum just says, no, which I know is not not the. the full term, but... I'm pretty sure in the book when he asks, Bail Shar is like... Or, yeah, he's like, well, I can't promise anything, but like, I'll bring it up.
Starting point is 01:05:38 And then Nahatnev is like, well, I know you're lying. So to really get the pack going, go fight that world eater in the arena. And then if you kill him. Participate in the Beast game. Yeah. The Beast games in Gladiatorial Pit instead.
Starting point is 01:05:56 Yeah. And that's how they sort of, like Forge it, but there's other stuff that happens that I'm sure you're about to get to, so I won't jump the gun as I usually do. Yes, so he jumped into Beast games, did that whole fight, etc. And then while leaving, Teh and Shar were informed about the movement of the Tyrannids towards the world of Piety 4, or sorry, five. The tyranids, of course, are a big problem for Caradons, as they are out in the void,
Starting point is 01:06:19 and they're a big reason why it's so hard for them to retain their numbers. So taking care of them is paramount. Tiberis says that this movement of Nids is due to gene stealers. So the third company goes down to investigate. And while investigating the world and trying to track down the cult, the cult finds them first and springs a trap. The cult was quite literally in its end stages, and their investigating would trigger the full uprising.
Starting point is 01:06:44 And meanwhile, in the outer dark, the librarians could feel something as the hive was approaching, and it was very overwhelming. Yeah, it was big. They were worried that they were going to get wiped out completely. So the sharks on the surface, including Kaori, who is an apprentice librarian, knew that if the cult wished to break the final grip of imperial rule on the planet, they'd have to storm absolution square on the surface, and then they would be ready for them. Wave upon wave of cultists would begin to slam to the defenses set up by the Carcadon's, and they'd push back as best as they could. The engagement in space against the tyrannids, of course, would become a bit close. quarters, both on the surface and on the NICOR itself.
Starting point is 01:07:32 The first three Tiernan warriors that attempted to board the NICOR would get a firsthand listen on why they called Tiberos the Red Wake. Gereoff. Tay Kaharanji had seen the Red Wake fight and kill many times before. Regardless, it was always a special privilege to witness the elemental destruction unleashed when the master of the car caridinastra was called upon it to render judgment. The great swing of the gauntlet's charged lightning claws Sheared through the wall to the Carcarridans left
Starting point is 01:08:01 Severed the warrior's head And carried on to slice into the wall on the right Leaving a trio of glowing gouges to either side That were immediately splattered with purple Ica Yeah, he goes hard He goes hard, dude So the combined force and speed of the Red Wakes attacks Was without equal
Starting point is 01:08:22 It was to be expected that the chapter master clad in his tactical dreadnought armor, which is Terminator, would smash and break his way through almost any and all opposition. What opponents did not anticipate was how quickly Tiberos moved when roused to battle, and how his gauntlets became a blur in the I-Corps slashed air. It was this advantage that meant the first three-tiered warriors to board the NICOR hardly managed to land a single blow, and take a harangy a dozen paces behind the Red Wake,
Starting point is 01:08:55 hadn't even raised his staff. Now, things were looking bad on both fronts, but the arrival of the Ashen Clause would result in the tides of the conflict turning in the favor of the Carcadon's. Kari would single-handedly wipe out the patriarch of the cult, when he would cycling detonate his head by placing a middle finger on his forehead. Yeah, it's really cool, actually. Yep, yeah. Which is thanks to the fact that he was bonded with the Bargoul due to the ritual being incomplete from the last book.
Starting point is 01:09:25 which is, yada yada, dea-a-da-de-s-x Machina. And the hive would turn and flee, ensuring a, we did it, Patrick, we saved the city type of moment for the Carcadon's. Do you remember that SpongeBob reference, D.K.? No, oh, I've seen it. I've seen gifts of them, like, standing in, like, the burning city, and everything is destroyed. And they're like, hey, we did it, Patrick, we saved the city.
Starting point is 01:09:48 And, yeah, I've seen it. Is that your SpongeBob voice? That's my attempt at it. Yeah. All right, all right. Hurry, Patrick, we did it. You know. Jesus,
Starting point is 01:10:01 that wasn't, like, I've heard worse. That wasn't the worst I've heard, but it definitely, it sounded like it was like pitched up or maybe pitched down. Well, you know, for someone that doesn't watch SpongeBob, I think it's pretty good. Oh, you, yeah, sorry, sorry.
Starting point is 01:10:17 Now, a survivor of the inquisitorial retinue, an arbitrator named Jade Renick would eventually, that's not the Rannick from Darktide, right? No. I made the same mistake while I was reading the first or second book. I was like, wait a minute, I've heard this name before. It's not from the, and it's like, no, it's different. I think the one in Rogue Traders spelled with an A and this is spelled with an E or something.
Starting point is 01:10:41 Dark Tide, not Rogue Traders, Devon Valencia. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I did double take there, yeah, it's not. But they'll be found by the Imperium, who would then be brutally interrogated by the Tempest of Sond. She would be told that the Imperium is referring to the incident here as the Piety Five Massacre, and she said it was worse than that before essentially throwing the Carcadons under the bus. Now, she really doesn't like the Carcaradans. It's almost like the whole Zartak thing previously left a really bad impression for her or something. Oh, yeah, she's informed.
Starting point is 01:11:16 She is constantly second-guessing Kiori until he literally like saves her like half a dozen times. she is constantly like bad-mouthing him and the Carcaryodons and telling everybody how much they suck and yeah. She's got full, full-blown PTSD. Can you blame her? It's like being the only survivor of the first book on that planet. And then like, yeah, you're going to, oh no, they're here. They're here now. She really had a bad time.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So, we have some post-rift stuff as well. Now, the final major conflict brings us to the modern era. The Battle of Diamantis started as penance, courtesy of Bail Shar. Schar and the third would experience defeat, and he would begin to suffer from the blindness. He would be stripped of his rank and title, and he would be cast into the void as a void exile, along with others of the third to fight, sorry, third company here, to fight until their death at the hands of the void.
Starting point is 01:12:23 miscilly ruined by the fact that he was now avoid exile, he would lead the others to the forge world of Diamantus to deal with an incoming spacehulk called grim destiny. The Carcadons themselves were dealing with this too, but Char's replacement, Keno, spelled
Starting point is 01:12:39 like cinema, was having more trouble with trying to command the third who straight up would not listen to him. And this was actually pretty matter of fact. D.K., I have this for you. Now, right, given the unusual circumstances involving the loss of the previous company master to exile rather than death,
Starting point is 01:13:01 it seemed almost certain Keno's role would not be fully ratified until the third company rejoined the nomad predation fleet. Only Rangoon knew when that would happen. I have noted that my company has redeployed without my orders, Kino said as Kowri arrived before the coral throne, eschwing any attempted formalities. Greetings, company master, Cowry replied, and yes, that is correct. Just flat out.
Starting point is 01:13:30 Yeah, we did what we like. Yeah, screw you, buddy. You're not my leader. I don't care. So, now, there was a bit of an interesting thing that occurs in the midst of all this arguing. We learned about how the Carcaryodons have primaris Marines and that they are going through the process.
Starting point is 01:13:49 We also learned that strike veteran Dorthor and actual named character from the first two books died while crossing the Rubicon Primaris. Oh, of course, sure. Rare. Rare for a named character to get that treatment, frankly. Yeah, very rare, very weird. Yeah, Ultramarans like to have a talk with you, Kyriev.
Starting point is 01:14:09 Yeah, anyways, uh, Kauri is the one carrying a lot of the weight here on the forge world. As the fabricator general viewed this as a bit of an issue quota-wise, so much so they almost straight up attack the Carceridons. Carri is the one that lowered the temperature, while the void exile separately went to the grim destiny. The Space Hulk was, in fact, controlled by a dark mechanic as tech priest by the name of Voldyre, who is a devout follower of the one, the only, Versace the Archiphafen.
Starting point is 01:14:39 Let's go, baby. You love to see it. You love to see him. Now, he had some bold plans when it came to his idea of ascenship. He believed that he would become a demon, not through the whims of demon Kim, but would instead fashion his own godhood through the unassailable power of logic and scientific reason. That rules. And then he debated Ben Shapiro.
Starting point is 01:15:07 Oh, no. On the show at the time, we're in all the red flags around him with ad mecks sitting there. And void in the verse in a vast story. was the debate moderator. Yeah. Now, the void exiles are not able to stop the Space Hulk. The scrap
Starting point is 01:15:28 code unleashed by Voldyer would cause power armor to be crippled and would force the exiles to escape. The Hulk eventually shows up in the system and the defensive batteries of Diamantus are able to shoot it down, but this was in fact a
Starting point is 01:15:44 ruse. The breaking apart of the space Hulk above the surface was a controlled separation, resulting in a big buckshot of chaos debris all over the world. This, of course, caused a lot of, you know, general debris-based damage, but it also allowed Volodyr to release a bunch of chaotic scrapcomb to corrupt a good portion of the Skatari on the surface. The Carcaridons would be focused on making their way to the new sphere on Diamantus to halt the spread of the code. Meanwhile, in the citadel on the planet, Volodyre would kill the fabricator general, and, and turn him essentially into a blood eagle so that he could do a ritual to summon Vashhtore
Starting point is 01:16:23 and turn this world into an analog of the forge of souls. The expansion of this domain to real space from the body of the fabricator general is referred to as the flesh ziggurat a few times in the book, and that rules. Damn. Yeah, no agreed. That's hard.
Starting point is 01:16:42 That's hard for it. Yeah. Now, Tegah Haurangi would be on the surface and would encounter Bail Shar, who had landed planet's side with the void exiles. Taya would essentially tell Char that he needed to get like a meditation app or something to deal with his blindness bullshit because the third company needed him really badly. His relic axe reaper would be returned to him, and they would begin to make their way to the flesh ziggurat.
Starting point is 01:17:09 Vol Dyer's ritual on becoming a logic and reason-based demon resulted in him dying and being reborn over and over again until his body was essentially, fused with the fabricator general's throne. His tendons would become wires and his brain would essentially become separate from his body. His now overwhelming consciousness would sense the presence of the Carcarodons approaching him and we knew they were too late. He was flesh and he was machine. And the idea of facing the space sharks would result in him drooling his own liquefied innards in an attempt to smile. Oh no. No. That's an image.
Starting point is 01:17:49 Yeah. Wow. That's actually sick. What a sentence. Oh, my God. Druling his liquefied innards in an attempt to smile is just crazy business, brother. So, fighting alongside the current acting member of the third, Schar would face the horrors of the flesh ziggurat,
Starting point is 01:18:09 while another void exile would be tasked to fix an issue. Prior to them getting to the throne, they would stumble across the ruins of a Navy vessel called the Starr, sire of Belafrome. They wanted to do a remote detonation of its core because it was essentially fused with the citadel now. However, remote detonation wasn't working, so someone had
Starting point is 01:18:28 to sacrifice themselves. The sharks would face the giant fucking brain and it would be like, the brain would be kind of like, ugh, before Sharr would strike it with the Reaper, destroying Vol Dyer's crane cosplay. Oh, also I love
Starting point is 01:18:44 they faced the brain and the brain went, I think I think I think I think I think Possum wrote this EU change I think he meant to do with the puffer fish oh sound affected both masterfully done by the I imagine is this oh great innards and guts pop out and yeah yeah I don't know why that pufferfish is so funny to me anyway the death of Voldire would time up perfectly with the detonation of the sire of Belafrom and the Carcarodons would escape, tempering the blindness and regaining control of himself, Bel-Sharr would once again resume command of the third company and return to the void to continue their penance.
Starting point is 01:19:31 Meanwhile, the Inquisition would arrive at Diamantus and would see yet another horrific mess that the sharks left behind. And as for Mr. Big Brain. Mr. Big Brain. Is it? Curiof, I think? Yes, Kariot. Voltaire squirmed through the darkness.
Starting point is 01:19:52 Of that fact and little else, he was aware. His glorious form on the cusp of enlightenment had been cruelly destroyed. Only his swollen brain matter had survived after being torn free. What the fuck? The infernal architect had shielded him. An intellect like his could not be lost. And so he had been preserved, lobes partially mutating, into jelly-like forelimbs,
Starting point is 01:20:19 making it possible to drag his squirming brain thing into a crevasse. He literally grows little arms and goes, he's Craig from Teenage Ninja Turtles. Oh, yeah. That's crazy. Put him in a colossus body. Put him in the middle of it.
Starting point is 01:20:40 Give him little controllers that tendrils can use. There you shy got it. Let's go. That's what he is. That is. That's exactly what it is. Oh, that's phenomenal. I love that. It reminds me in my childhood. Hell yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:55 What? I want you to go to someone who you know, but who doesn't know how much time you spend talking about Warhammer, present that quote and then say to them straight face, if this reminds me of my childhood and see what happens. Maybe. Maybe I will hit someone with that quote and be like, Ah, childhood. I bet you if someone knew me well enough, they'd be like, oh, because teenage mutant ninja,
Starting point is 01:21:23 I bet you. Yeah, probably to be fair. But for the most part, that is the story of the Carcarradons. That's cool. That's where we got. They are, uh, they're weirdos. I'm not going to lie. Yeah, they, they're, they're a strange bunch.
Starting point is 01:21:43 Um, also, I, you would never, never got to the fact that Tehaharani actually promised the Ashen claw guy I was like, yeah, you can have them. I guarantee it. I promise you can have them. And that's why they show up and save the space sharks in outer dark, or the second book,
Starting point is 01:22:00 is because the guy was actually promised them by Tekeharaanji. Because that's the only way you'd show up is if you thought you were going to get him. And then the red wigs like, um, those weren't his to promise. If you want him, fight me. And he's like, no, no, no, no, no, I'm good. We're going to dip.
Starting point is 01:22:16 We're going to leave. I was thinking that Bail Shah had done that, like gone back and changed his answer. But yeah, no, it's a bold play that, you know, potentially actually ruined that ally sort of situation they've had for the rest of time, probably. But, you know. Yeah, because they were charging the exo-lands to blow them out of the sky.
Starting point is 01:22:40 Once they're like, no, you can't have them. And he's like, really, really, okay. also exo lances are kind of scary I'd never heard of those before that book oh really that's not a thing I mean they may well be and I just hadn't heard of them but it being like the Ashen Clause
Starting point is 01:22:57 like Battlebar just got a giganto laser down the middle of it I was like I did I don't remember that from other stuff but hey you know there's a lot of lost tech you can throw whatever you like out there pretty much can't you? We found
Starting point is 01:23:14 it somewhere, I guess. Yeah. They are one of the most... I think Carcarradans, they are like one of the most interesting chapters that also have had this weird thing where the stuff that they've had written about them to kind of give more of an insight into them
Starting point is 01:23:28 hasn't necessarily done that a huge amount? Yeah, that was like the big problem I think we all had with all of the Space Sharks books is we're like, they're not bad books. It just feels like the Carcadons are almost guests in their own trilogy. Like, you get a little sprinkling of stuff about them, like, especially in the second one you get a sprinkling with, like, the Ravenguard and the Ashen Claw.
Starting point is 01:23:51 But it's just like, I need more. It's a space sharks book. Give me more space sharks. They've got some of the most, like, interesting sort of myth building as well. Mm-hmm. Like, the whole thing of being completely exiled and having their own set of edicts and rights and, like, the way they sustain themselves is kind of unique, which is really, really fun. but I don't know. I just, again, same thing that we've said before.
Starting point is 01:24:19 I want to see more of them, but more of, more of them would be nice. Yeah, agreed. I don't want to know much about like Inzogu's little strike force or whatever. Like more space sharks. I also just really like, I just like the fact, I just like the fact they got like a tank with a megaladon in it. They do. They do. subtle as always G-dub, subtle as always.
Starting point is 01:24:46 But yeah, we love the Carcaryodons. Yeah, yeah. I mean, the only thing that we can truly, like, properly knock the books for is repeatedly referring to a contempt to Dreadnought in the second book and then clearly describing a Leviathan Dreadnought. Apart from that, all good. I mean, it makes it unreadable as a Dreadnought enjoyer. But you know what?
Starting point is 01:25:11 We all make mistakes. I forget what it was that we were talking about it, and Kiranath was like, no, the second book is unforgivable, unreadable, and I refuse to say anything nice about it. I was like, whoa, Kyriath, what happened? He's like, they, they described the wrong dreadnought. How dare they? You will suffer my wrath. You can't keep calling it a contemptor and then talk about having flamers that come out from under the torso. Contemptors don't have that, and you're not allowed to mention siege claws or siege drills.
Starting point is 01:25:43 Because they don't have that either. Also, he lost his mind. He was absolutely insane when he got deployed. And that's also a vibrant thing. You know, just basic, basic stuff. Other than that, it was fine. But, you know. This is the kind of petty little bit there that I appreciate.
Starting point is 01:26:02 I like that. All right. Hell yeah. Thank you, everyone, for joining us in this episode of the Sharks. I'm going to play a sound clip now of me dropping DK into the Megalodon tank. Goodbye everybody. DK., scream a little. Oh, I was, I was waiting for the sound clip.
Starting point is 01:26:23 You got to do the sound clip first. And then, I don't have, I don't have the sound clip. I need, I need you to scream a little and then, and then the editor to add, like, a little, like, cabluck. Well, it would have been nice, a little four-one. Anyway, ah!
