We might compare the Gospels to stained glass windows, through which the glorious light of Christ shines.
In each the rays of his effulgence disclose a peculiar beauty.
Struck by the splendour of the one light passing through them all,
many hearers fail to perceive the distinctive artistry of each of the four gospel accounts.
My next Davenant Hall course is on the Gospel of Luke.
Within it I want to train the eyes of those taking it to see
what makes Luke distinctive, to appreciate the evangelist's literary, typological, and symbolic
artistry and some of the key features of his theological perspective. Over 10 weeks, with two hours
of class time in each, not including office hours, we will wander throughout the many highways and
byways of Luke's gospel, acquainting ourselves with its thoroughfares and exploring some
overgrown and forgotten paths. We will follow itineraries of truth that open,
into breathtaking scriptural vistas. During our expedition, we will converse with many fellow
travellers and some seasoned scouts, joining almost 2,000 years of pilgrims in the process.
We will consider numerous features of Luke's landscape, the literary structure of the gospel,
the infancy narratives, the politics of his kingdom vision, the importance of the spirit within
his account, Jesus' understanding of the law, his eschatological teaching,
His use of parables, his prophetic praxis, his opponents, Luke's teaching of the cross, and much else besides.
We will investigate Luke's use of the Old Testament and the relationship between the gospel and the acts of the apostles,
situating the gospel within the broader canon.
We will reflect upon the relationship between the gospel account and the systematic theological teaching
on subjects such as Christology and the Atonement,
ensuring that our reading is not non-theological.
Many of my Davenant Hall courses are very wide-ranging,
covering the whole scope of Scripture on some subject.
I'm looking forward to teaching this course
as one devoted to very close examination
of one of the most remarkable and important texts of Scripture.
Everyone who registers for the course has exclusive access
to recordings of each class and office hour.
No need to worry if you have to miss a class or want to review material.
These recordings are unobtainable otherwise.
This is your only opportunity to get them.
Within each class there will be lots of time for questions and interaction
ensuring that those taking the course have their areas of interest addressed.
My courses typically have students from a very wide range of backgrounds,
young people to retirees, pastors and academics to lay people of all walks of life.
Most of my students are auditors rather than those taking the class for credit.
It is not part of a larger program of studies for them.
It's something that they want to get into for its own sake.
For some, it's an opportunity to get back into studies after some years outside of college.
Some pastors have taken my courses to revive their theological interest and studies
in order to reinvigorate their teaching.
Many others are in situations where they cannot undertake a full program of studies,
but they want to think deeply about something.
Perhaps they are raising children at home.
Perhaps they're working full-time,
and only have a limited time to give to studies,
but really want to get into something of interest to them.
If you're in such a position,
then a Davenant Hall course may be something for you,
and I hope to see some of you in my Luke course,
given the fact that all of the classes are recorded and can be accessed at a later point,
it also gives flexibility for those who may find that they don't have as much time as they
originally thought and want to get into the material in more depth at a time of greater convenience
for them. The course material will be stretching yet accessible for most.
Whatever level you're at, whatever background you have in New Testament studies,
I hope that you'll find this course to be very worthwhile.
is designed not merely to inform you academically, but more deeply to acquaint you with the one
whose glory shines throughout the third gospel. While spending time in the scholarship, our goal
is to fire our hearts for worship. Entirely through my own fault, I've barely publicised this
course so far, and there are only a few days left in which to register. So if you are interested,
there really is no time to lose. I have put the link for the registration page in the show notes
below. Take a look and please consider signing up. It would be wonderful to see some of you in this
upcoming course. God bless you and thank you for listening.
