If you haven't heard, Burn the Boy is back again with its eighth album titled, I Told Them.
Now, when you look at the lingo, it's going to tell you his seventh studio album from counting.
And I do believe I can count just a little bit.
It's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
So his eight albums spanning from 2013 to 2023.
So this album in particular,
has a total of 15 tracks guest features from the one and only uk savage himself riza j cole
byron messiah and more of course this album features a distinct afrobeast sound as
bernaboy is one of the if not um the most popular artist in afrobeas genre of course
personally I will say that's still Tim's but technically currently Burnaboy is being held on a higher scale than most if not every other Afrobeast musician which I'm not mad at I think in general the Afrobeats sound is kind of having a wave right now and this type of achievement is interesting because all the people who doubt it the Afrobeast genre is just looking at the success right now.
now and probably thinking to themselves what happened like just last year hip hop had a firm
grasp on just the sales and the charts and then everybody from from a bird's eye view is looking at
this landscape like oh afro beast is taken over even i mistakenly i might add thought the afrobeats was
taken over so ladies and gentlemen let me tell you something i'm not believing the hype i looked at the numbers
I looked at the charts.
I even went to the Nigeria charts themselves
to try to look at something from Burnaboy.
And guess what?
Burnaboy was nowhere to be found
on the United States charts.
So then I went to global.
I'm like, you know what?
He's probably a bigger overseas artist.
Nowhere to be found on those charts as well, right?
Surely his hometown, his home turf,
home court advantage,
he'll probably be charting there, right?
and yes he was at number 14 let me tell you something if you're being compared to some of the
biggest artists in the world like it's drake taylor swift um who else or biance that's not even
name the top of the tops a little baby a rod wave just if you really want to compare afrobeats
to hip-hop and you can't even chart top five in your own field when it comes to
sales and when it comes to
streaming,
I don't think we can even put him in the conversation
in the global
landscape of Afrobeats
genre. Because I think Tim's has
transitioned effectively. Wisskid
has transitioned effectively.
But people keep talking about Burnaboy, like he's
bigger than both. And I think
they're looking at numbers that, honestly, I
believe it's fabricated because
one thing you can't fabricate, you may be at
fabricate all the listeners on DSPs, right?
But then you come to the Billboard charts and you realize that his album,
African Giant in 2019, spent a whopping one week on the Billboard 200 charts.
Twice as tall, which came out in 2020, spent a total of one week on the charts.
Billboard 200.
Remind you.
Latest album before this one,
and 2022, Love Domeni,
spent 12 weeks on the charts.
Billboard 200, my ad.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I feel like Burnaboy is just on a bigger label,
but when it comes to artists
who are pushing the new sound for it,
I'm still a big believer in
WizKid, Dave,
Central Seas,
Tim's but I don't know why but it took me a little bit to realize that these numbers
I'm not gonna call him fluff because he's been getting a lot of press from
different outlets that I definitely respect but Bartaboy is just not putting forth
the sales that I feel like warrants this type of praise and then this type of
acknowledgement to be saying that he's taking over the
landscape when it comes to a plethora of other Afrobeat artists during the same niche as him
who's having way more impact on the pop sound and then here Burner Boy comes in can't even like
Essence by Tim's has been running the charts when it came out I don't know if you could tell me a
song by Burner Boy that's ran this ran the charts like Essence by Tim's so now
not to pit Afrobees artists against each other,
because that's not what I'm doing.
I'm just pointing out how people who are overestimating
Burnaboy's actual impact on the music landscape
when it comes to his tour,
and when it comes to his actual music,
I think just have to look at the sales
when it comes to charting on Billboard.
Because at some point, people will be like,
oh, sales isn't all that.
Well, then if sales aren't all that,
then why would you ask fans?
to purchase a ticket to come watch you perform.
Why not just tell him to come for free?
Sales ain't all that, right?
So anyways, this album, of course,
is going to showcase a lot to me because I don't know
his first week sales for Love Demini last year,
because as far as overseas, numbers is hard to basically grasp
simply because numbers overseas is not,
easily accessible like in the States.
But that being said, you still can get a nice notion of the overarching worldwide appeal
by looking at the global charts, if that makes sense.
So, like, currently, right, if I was to go to the global charts, you will see artists
like John Cook, of course, from BTS, K-pop, that's Korean music, Taylor Swift, of course,
because she's one of the biggest artists like ever.
then you get to a lot of pop stars right
and then you have quavito which i don't even know if that's like a latin artist sounds like it
you have v again from korean then hey the one i just said dave with sprinter and central
c but guess who's nowhere to be found even though they're saying that he's the biggest
and taken over as far as the new wave of music and the landscape of things like i just feel like
I don't want to come across as a hater
but after looking at the numbers,
I'm realizing that the public perception is not
matching the actual performance.
And I think if it was any other person,
like,
I don't want to bring race into it,
but if it was any other
ethnicity, I think
a lot of people would be questioning
why are we hyping this person up so much
when
the numbers
are not really
complimenting the type of flowers that he's getting.
Obviously, I'm not saying that he makes bad music.
That's not why I'm going to get out there.
Sitting on top of the world, I think, is one of the best tracks of the year,
especially when 21 Savage hopped on a remix,
but even by itself, I feel like it was one of the best,
better tracks of the year.
And with Burnaboy's success, you know, more power to him.
I hope he gains more success.
I just feel like we'll set him up for failure by overreact.
and overestimating his reach.
Anyways, let's get back into the actual objective facts about his album.
So his album I told them is about 41 minutes and 35 seconds long, right?
Like I said, it has features from Giza, Reza, 21 Savage, Dave, J.
J. Cole, a plethora of other artists.
Let's see.
one of the biggest things I like about Afrobeats and Burnaboy is that his music
I don't know what it is about Afrobees but it really represents a more positive side
of society coming from a person who covers hip hop a lot I really appreciate that
I feel like Afrobees emphasizes such a unity and a positive message that
needs to be heard more throughout the world
compared to shoot him up bang bang music
which I'm used to covering
and with that being said
I think a lot of the outlets who cover
Burn a boy in the way they cover him
kind of noticed that
positive impact
on his unique storytelling
and just his musical journey
and I think maybe that's why he gets some of the coverage he gets
but I think when it gets
I think when it goes too far is when they start talking about
his overarching impact on a musical landscape
when people in the same niche and the same field
is way more impactful I believe so
with that being said click my link to your bio
let me know one of my social media is what do you think about
burn the boy and it's over
overall impact on the music landscape?
Do you think I was off kilter with my critiques on Burnaboy as far as the perspective and over
the bird's eye view of his impact on the music industry?
And also, will you be giving this album that's currently out on our DSPs titled I Told Them a Listen?
