Starting point is 00:00:03 Leonard McKelvey that was born in South Carolina. You know, he was a troubled youth as far as my readings of black privilege. But of course, if you look at it from an internet perspective, because his whole life seemingly is on the internet, which is also really started with the radio internship. And of course, a lot of people know that he was mentored by Wendy Williams in 2006. And then the monumental show, that is the Breakfast Club, He was the co-host for that back of 2010, syndicated to a hundred stations, of course, known for a lot of his interviews and him being very blunt to the point where I'm not going to lie.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Charlemagne is definitely the blueprint to quote Jay-Z as far as content creation and the music field. No, I just got to keep it eight more than 92 because, of course, you already know my inspirations when it comes to creating content from a totality aspect. I would have different creators on this list. But as far as specifically covering music, some of my biggest inspirations is one, of course, academics, if y'all can't tell by my name. Two is Joseph Anthony Button. Of course, number three, it's probably Charlemagne.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Not probably it is. And then number four, I'll probably say the big boy or sway. Because I feel like I'm very non-problematic when covering music. Even though you know, I do have my jokes about size seven. I mean, white tank top. But at the end of the day, when I cover music, those are my that is my Mount Rushmore of I guess I did name five people okay I choose like sway over big boy so Charlemagne Joe Budden no academics Joe Budden Charlemagne and sway so anyways
Starting point is 00:01:43 after me giving my you know random Mount Rushmore the reason why I'm doing that is to give Charlemagne all the flowers in the world pulse because this man not only broke through as one of the greatest covers of music but some would say he's basically the Stephen A. Smith of hip-hop and for that I think it was only right that he received $200 million from IHeart. And more specifically, this is a five-year $200 million agreement with IHard Media. The deal was finalized in August 2025 and publicly revealed in December 19, 2025. And this is via Forbes. So Charlemagne Ben is sitting on this post.
Starting point is 00:02:26 And of course, when it comes to that, I think when you look at the ultimate success and also the humility, something like that. Basically him being humble. I almost say humidity. I was like, no, that's the weather. Anyways, him being humble, right? And him just having to wear it all to understand not everybody needs a response
Starting point is 00:02:48 because of course, not going to say her name, but certain people just come out with the most blasphemous statements in the world. And then they get sued and then they cross into the internet, right? And then other people, like a Charlemagne, the guy, comes with facts, comes with receipts, comes with shepherd i you know i ain't trying to glaze too much but basically charlemagne is as real as you get when it comes to coverage and and shooting it and telling it like it is so when you look at this
Starting point is 00:03:12 in totality this is a huge win not only for people like me but also for content creators in general who are very passionate about what they do and have the work ethic to go along with the passion because really passion means nothing if you're just going to show up every other year right i think the consistency of getting in this game is what leads you to the top. So anyways, when you look at Charlemagne, he basically came out and talked about how he transitioned from on-air talent to a media executive in a platform, a platform builder, and expanded the Black Effect podcast network into quote the BET of podcasting. And then of course, he wants to have a scalable platform for black lead audio content.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And his quote to Forbes, mind you, to Forbes. Charlemagne, the guy said, quote, I don't want to just be talent. I want to create the BET for podcasting. So, of course, me being a Hall of Fame pocket watcher, safe to say, I had to look up how in the world did this deal go down? Because Charlemagne's insanely impactful. I believe when you look at I heart, he has so much influence and power over there. that's why I compare him as the Stephen A to hip hop.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Could you look at our heart in general? In 2021, they had, and these estimated reports, right, 252 million in 2021. 101 million in 2022. So I guess they went backwards. I don't know. 448 million in 2024. And they say that podcast revenue has more than quadrupled since 2020.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Shout to the podcast is out there. I'm a little biased. You know what I'm saying? y'all may say i'm a little biased i don't care what they do you know i may say i'm a little biased i don't care that's my you know that's supposed to be my snitch and drop why in the world does it keep saying young thud it keeps playing young thud anyways um so again back in the black effect it's cited as a meaningful contributor to iHeart's podcast business so safe to say charlemagne has a lot of influence and even that's an understatement because of course when you look at i heart from a business perspective
Starting point is 00:05:23 they also are making their own moves as netflix and i heart announced a separate partnership that will have 15 iHeart media podcasts that will include the breakfast club and of course that whole partnership begins in 2026 and the structure is that Netflix will have the streaming platform and iHeart media will retain distribution rights and there's other shows that's attached to that particular deal and of course the breakfast club is the main one so when you look at the industry position safe to say looking at a chessboard and playing your pieces right is something that charlemagne and joe button does a lot as far as just ultimately showcasing the greatest moves and content created history as far as covering music now of course you could come out with your
Starting point is 00:06:17 miss the bees your kaisa nash your speeds of the world but for me specifically diving into music these are the people i look at as far as certain moves that they make and how they continue to adapt to the current times. Now, IHard Media president, Rich Pressler, came out and called Charlemagne a quote, transformative voice and audio, credited him with amplifying diverse voices, driving cultural dialogue, and shaping the future of audio media. And that's not it, ladies and gentlemen. Bob Pittman came out, the CEO, and basically emphasized Charlemagne's authenticity and acknowledge his polarizing commentary as core to his brand value. So now, when you take all that in, pause, and then of course, when you look at the
Starting point is 00:07:10 podcast and game in general, some would say, not some would say, objectively speaking, there was a huge boom in 2020. I mean, my podcast started in 2020, been created since 2018, doing this full time for two years. So you already know the past is there, you know what I'm saying? But as far as when you look at Charlemagne and how long he's been doing it, and amount of revenue he's been generating. That is why it's very apparent and very important, not only to go at your own pace,
Starting point is 00:07:35 but also to realize what you're doing as far as the consistency matters because really preparation meets opportunity, then you have success. But of course, some people don't always get that opportunity and some people don't prepare, which I think is way worse. Anyways, $200 million, five years, that's insane.
Starting point is 00:07:52 So drop a bomb for Charlemagne the guy. Everybody talking about, oh, the deal's about the end. You know, so many experts, so many experts about Charlemagne's deal. I was just thinking to myself, hold on now. I don't know where, are they in the studio with our heart media? It was the same people talking about, oh, Envy going to jail. Oh, like, hold up now. Who don't they do?
Starting point is 00:08:15 That's supposed to be my snitching drop. I do not know why I keeps playing yon thug. But anyways, um, y'all out here snitching on envy and come to find out, y'all was lying the whole time. You guys. See, that's the problem. Envy, a whole free man out here thinking about how people was saying that FBI running into the hot 97.
Starting point is 00:08:32 Envy gave him everything they asked for. And guess what? Still didn't go to Joe. So if somebody is out here lying, lying on Envy, lying on Charlemagne, crazy day. Crazy day in history. As you come to see that this deal can be compared to the Joe Rogan to, well, and it can't be compared because Joe Rogan is making an egregious amount. I mean, it's just a disgusting amount he's making over at Spotify.
Starting point is 00:08:54 But it is one of the bigger deals for black content. content career. I like to emphasize the black because, you know, I think one of the main things we have, you know, I don't like to get into the white privilege and black privilege, but, you know, he literally has a book called black privilege. I think if you look at white privilege as far as everything, one of the few things that black people do have a lot of privilege in slightly is hip hop and sports. Well, hip hop in some sports. So to see Charlemagne getting this amount of money as far as covering the sport of hip hop is. phenomenal and that's an understatement because he does he talks about I mean this could be I ain't going to lie if I really get into what Charlemagne does as far as the political side the book side the black effect that the turkey drives and the way he gives back time and time again a different cultural events that he throws for free I mean y'all going to call it glazing so at the end of day I just let you look into it but I will say black privilege is one of the better books I've read in quite some time and but that being said you know that's basically you know enough glazing for me
Starting point is 00:09:53 pause so that means they click my link to my bio let me know one of my social medias what do you think about charlemagne the guide five-year deal 200 million dollars from ihar media and ultimately if you consume a lot of hip-hop creators like myself let me know who do you think is on a mount rushmore of covers in the music industry
