M has been doing a swirly motion over there and I'm just dying to know what are you sipping? I'm sipping. Well, actually, oh, I left it in the fridge. I was going to do a twofer.
Starting point is 00:02:04 I'm drinking a London fog. Fantastic. And I'm kind of bringing back the liquid deaths right now, my little LDs. Okay. Hey, that's interesting. How did this happen? I feel like I've been off the, off the rate, they've been off my radar. You don't know how it happened?
Starting point is 00:02:21 I went to see Wine and Crime Live last night. I was about to say I saw this so weird. I saw like, I think it was Stephen Ray Moore posted with like, she was holding one in her, and I was like, I haven't had a liquid death in a while. And I thought that this morning. Literally. See, that's, wow. I think it was because we haven't been in agreement room in a while.
Starting point is 00:02:38 And I think that it was just. Okay, that's probably why. And also like a venue, like a theater venue where they serve them. And so they let us go hang out in the green room before the show. Fun. They were, I heard Amanda or someone say like, oh, do you want to water and, like, open up, like, the green room fridge. And it was just like cans and cans and cans. And I was like, I think I'm going to get back into this now.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Oh, this old thing. Yeah. I think it was jaded because we talk about it so much and they've never offered us a single little hello. I know. You felt a really personal kind of like, personally attacked by them for a while. We could help each other so much, especially on an, that's why we drink, or neither was drink. You know what I'm saying? Right.
Starting point is 00:03:12 But like, they don't need the help as well. but we've learned over the years. I know. And like, I think when you called them a small business and then it was like, they were like a multi-million dollar corporation. I do remember that. I think that's when we really lost the plot a little bit. I will say because they were new to me, I assumed what I was like, I know about all types
Starting point is 00:03:30 of water. This is new to me. And therefore, I mean, yeah, it was smaller back then, you know, than it is now. It's only like a one million dollar business instead of like. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like small potatoes. Yeah, yeah. Well, that's exciting.
Starting point is 00:03:43 So you don't have that. But what, so, oh, but you got your London fog. So I got my London fog. The other one, it's, she's chilling in the fridge. That'll be my post record drink now. In your green room fridge. My very white room fridge, yeah. Yeah, there you go.
Starting point is 00:03:57 So I drink that. And then I also have a backup LF. I think that's going to be my dog park drink later. Oh, dog park drink. You got that dog in you. Oh, whoop. So, what are you drinking? Well, before the show, M.
Starting point is 00:04:13 was like, I got to lick the lid real quick. I acted judgmental, but now I'm like, wait. You got to lick the lid? I guess so, and it's now on air, but no, I'm not going to do that. If you do it, I still have a little left on mine. We can just lick together. Okay, I'm making sure my address. Gay, no home.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Wait, actually, this is, this is so gay. Are you ready? Yeah, tell me. There's a flap. Ah! Now you know good and well. I'm so sorry. The word flap, it might as well be the word moist,
Starting point is 00:04:42 especially when you put them together. Moist flaps. Oh my God. Sorry. Are we looking together or what? Well, now look at what I've had, what I have to work with it. I don't feel really like drawn to be participating. Like the flap, Christine.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Don't be shy. Don't be shy. All right. You sick fucks better not do anything with that. The fan art's going to go nutty. Anyway. Peanut butter. What else is in there besides peanut butter?
Starting point is 00:05:12 You just lick in a jar of peanut butter. The peanut butter flap. Oh, right. A pee-b flap. No, it's my. smoothie that looks so pretty. Look. That is beautiful. And then I did that stupid allergy test and I'm so mad because what'd you find out? I'd already submitted it and then everyone was like guys or Christine that doesn't work. And I was like, I know, but I shouldn't have said it because I already
Starting point is 00:05:33 know I'm going to get that feedback. And then I got the thing and it was basically the four ingredients that I had that are in this smoothie. Shut up. Well, I just ate that. I don't think I'm allergic to a smoothie. I mean, I stopped drinking it and then tried again. I was like, it doesn't have any So I think it just kind of like tracked what I had just been eating. Sure. For the past few days. So it was like, you're allergic to raspberries. And I'm like, what?
Starting point is 00:05:57 And like one other really random thing where I was like, that's not a food I eat like ever. I don't know. It was just strange. And so I felt a little bit like disheartened by that. So I'm back to my smoothie game because fuck that. You know, I found out speaking of allergy tests, nothing about myself. But I think I'm the last person on Earth who still watches Jacket. And hey, can I confirm something? You are absolutely the last person on it. Besides the people on the treadmill who forgot their AirPods and the gym only plays MTV.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I, well, for a while, I don't know what was going on. I was doing something mindless, a puzzle or something. And I was like, I just need something that I'm not really going to pay attention to, but I need the background sound. And Jackass just, I didn't like go searching for it. It was in, it was like as a suggestion for whatever reason. I don't know what my. algorithm thinks of me. But it was right because I press play and I went I don't totally hate this. You fucking pegged apparently. I um I like to be fair I don't like think their humor is funny or anything but like I don't mind watching people kind of get hurt like I don't know there's something about it. It feels kind of like your vibe yeah. I'm just kind of like oh like at least it's at least not me um but I found out you're like an old like grandma like well just these kids these kids these days at least it's not me my Johnny would never no I mean I like the The gross ones I can't, I can't do.
Starting point is 00:07:20 But like just watching them hurt themselves. I don't know what so like just like, I'll just suck myself into that. It's a good teenage boy. I found out that like they'll do obviously such insane dangerous, dangerous, dangerous, dangerous things. And but they all have to take an allergy test to make sure that like if they do any stunts with like bees that they like don't get stung. If they, I was like this, that's the one fucking caveat is to see if you're allergic to bees. I love that they're like actually medical. Legal is going to be real pissed if we let you launch off a skateboard and break your femur.
Starting point is 00:07:48 half but then an ant crawls over you literally like there's one guy who apparently is like severely allergic to bees but then they're like anyway why don't you just go like jump off a fucking cliff without a helmet sorry the bees are out uh how do you feel about really tall heights like fair toss up anyway um wow you said allergy and i i i just learned that last night i love that we learned you're watching jackass that's funny it is shocking so yeah maybe that's i mean i don't know where to go from here uh why do you oh is that why you drink or no that's just about your smoothie. Why do you drink? Well, there's so many reasons. I woke up to the sound and I had a text on my phone for my mom that said there if there's a man in your chimney and I was
Starting point is 00:08:27 like, yeah, there is a man in my jesus. So my brother said, he said, was it the end of December? And I said, what? Like I literally was like, what do you mean was at the end of December? And he's like the end of December. And I was like, what? He's like when Christmas is. And I was like, oh, no, it wasn't. It was last night. And I heard this pounding sound. It was like 8 a.m. too, far. too early for me. Might have been middle of the night. And I just hear this like pounding, banging, clanging. Yeah, there's a man in my chimney. And it's not Santa. And he's just there to fuck up my morning, I guess. But wait, hold on. It cut out. Who was it? All I heard was it's not Santa. I don't think it cut out. I forgot to say it's just a guy working on the house. Oh, I guess.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Okay. My mom just hired him and was like he's in the chimney. She had to know what she was saying with that. That's way too silly. Well, she just loved for Germany and they're still here and he's still in the walls or something. And I keep hearing sounds. But the electric's, the electricity is back on. It was off for a minute. And I was actually a little worried. But it's back. And they're on the roof. And we're really high up. So if I see anything fall, I'm going to have a panic attack. You'll finally have my moment how you have when the door dash people show up. Like, oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Except yours is much more valid. Yeah. Well, yeah. It's just, it's just, um, it's just. Um, it's just, um, it's just. Um, um, What is it he's working on? A little bit of a jump scare, but yeah, I also drink because I thought my name was on this. And I was like, oh, they spelled my name wrong.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, no, that's the name of this movie. Oh, my God. Does beauty and Sharpie on the top. That hurts extra when it's like, oh, they weren't calling me beautiful. No, I really, I felt like a little bit like charmed for a moment, you know?
Starting point is 00:10:07 Yeah, I'd be like, oh, my God, you too. You too? Should I write them back? Does it matter? Do you think they care if I lick the lid? I meant. Do you think you can see the word beauty when I lick the lid? Because that's going to cost more money.
Starting point is 00:10:22 It's going to cost extra for you freaks. You know what? Test it. See what they do. Okay. I will say the straw does every time you do that, it looks like you're just slurping on celery. From the distance. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Also, Hank always has a stick of celery in his mouth, so I think I'm just used to it. You're like, give me that. Spit it out. It's literally his, like, he won't do anything anymore without celery or a carrot. That's like very cute. It's extremely cute. It's cute until we don't have any celery or carrots. And then I'm like, get over here.
Starting point is 00:10:51 God forbid. Anyway. What do you drink? Do we know? Do we know? Do we know? No. I drink because what, what's going on?
Starting point is 00:11:06 Let me just tell you about my day today. I have this. I have like three stupid phone calls I have to do. One is with my, like my mom. I owe her a phone call. And I know it'll just take an, eternity, which love you, mom, but it's going to not be a quick one. We recently had a conversation where we shook hands on trying to agree to make the phone calls shorter because here's my thing.
Starting point is 00:11:31 And I'm absolutely just going to like, yeah, let's go. Let's get into it. My mother are texting me that there's a man in my chimney at 8 a.m. So like, I'm ready to fucking see what's up on the other side of this. Perfect. What's going on with Linda? I, and I say this all with love, mom, but you can't stop me either. Um, why did I wear a white sweatshirt? Why do I own a white sweatshirt? Why do you own one? Yeah, that's a better question. I have no clue. What the fuck did you just say? Um, what did I say? I said, yeah, it made me spit my fucking drink out. And I'm upset and I don't even remember what it was now. You said, oh, I said, but she can't stop me from what I'm about to say. Yeah. What the fuck? I just spit my drink out everywhere. Well, I have. Well, I have.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Of the stereotypical just Jewish New York mother who like just it's the like a phone call where I will answer a phone and I will tell I won't even say hello yet. I'll say you have five minutes. I'll give her a timer immediately. You're just past the pleasantries now at this point. Like truly if I don't, sometimes the phone call goes on for like two and a half hours. And I'm like it's the middle of the day. And then of course because she thinks like this are you talking or is she just talking? Like what's the. It's not a 50-50 split, I'll tell you that. Okay. I wonder, is that useful for you? Are you like, I wish I could talk more? Or you're like, at least I'm not talking, you know? Um, interesting. Because I, I feel like I, I'm ready for the conversation to be done after a half an hour.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And so after that half an hour mark, I'm not speaking, one, because she's telling me what's going on in her life, but also because, like, I've, I have, my battery has burnt out. So it's really not a fair argument from my mom is going to say, like, we talk for two and a half hours and you don't talk. And like, I wish you would talk. And so I'm, I'm going to say, you're right, mom. I don't. That's on me. But, um, I understand.
Starting point is 00:13:31 One of the things that we shook hands on is I was like, if you call me less or if you call me more, but with a less time, I will be a lot more engaging in those periods. But like, if you're calling me once a week and expecting a three hour conversation or two hour conversation, with me. I don't have enough to update you on. And then like for the next hour, I look like an ass because I'm like not engaging. Do you guys text at all? Hmm? Is she a text shirt or not really? Oh, the texting. Oh, we had to shake hands on that too. Um, wow, I'm clearly just opening a can of worms here. Anyway, my, and I, I'm very lucky to have a mom who wants to like talk with me and all that, but like I don't have enough material for two hours a week. Like I, most of my life, I'm sitting here. I've got a dog. I've got Allison. We're not leaving the house. I don't. And she's retired and she's going here and there. She literally told me last time I talked to her that for the next full calendar year, she's only going to be home for like eight days. I was like, how does she find time to call you? Literally, okay, so now you're just giving her ammo because she's going to be like, I'm doing all this stuff and I can find things to talk about. But. Wow. Anyway, so I'm excited to try out this new method because I do want to talk to her more often. I just, I just have nothing. And the method is just more frequency.
Starting point is 00:14:45 fewer or fewer shorter periods Well then I also do like the like annoying kid thing where like I'm in my 30s but act like I'm a teenager where like I see my mom call and I'm like Oh that's going to take two hours. I can't right now. And then I just forget to call her back and so then I never call her. So I was like if I know that when I answer the phone
Starting point is 00:15:05 I will be doing something else in a half an hour I will answer the phone. But like I just never know and I don't want to get like sucked into something. And she was. was very receptive and we shook hands and I am excited for this new chapter in our conversation. Congratulations. That is a big step. Thank you. It's a old step. And it's also on me. I need to answer the phone more, but I need to trust that it's the back. It's going to be a dance. It's going to be a dance. Yeah. Anyway, I do love you, mom. I'm sorry if I'm embarrassed to you. But I am excited to talk to you more. Just I think a lot of people would love to talk to Linda if you need a moment away from the phone,
Starting point is 00:15:41 you know. That's true. I could just go on Instagram live and just put her on speaker phone and be like, Totally. I was going to say, oh my God, I didn't even think of that. That's a great idea. That actually is a great idea. It's like, if you want to, my mom needs someone to talk to you, you guys want to talk to my mom. Let's just make that happen.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Or like just for this podcast. Like you can just stop, just be quiet and just hold the phone up. And then like we'll just have two hours. It's beautiful actually. That's actually not a bad idea. I'm sure she would love a podcast. I'm going to be drained because it feels like I'm going to be have to step in, you know, as the co-host is like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:10 That's fine. In another life, she should have been a podcaster because. Yeah, maybe this is, maybe this is a few. future. Mom? Uh-oh. You listening? What did I just say?
Starting point is 00:16:19 Can you imagine if her and I started a podcast where instead of having phone calls? Yeah, that's kind of what I'm pitching right this very minute. I'm kind of into it. She just updates me in front of everybody so then everyone holds both of us accountable. Now, I don't hate that. I don't hate that either. As like, as the occasional reality television viewer, I feel like that could be really messy. I mean, I will say the things that she's talking to me about are interesting.
Starting point is 00:16:40 I just like, I've got nothing. Like, I have just nothing in the chamber. So actually, then maybe we could all just enjoy it. Anyway, let me know if you want to lend a gossip session. I do. Anyway, I feel like I was a bad child by airing all that. However, I'm not going to take it either. The end. That's why I drank, I guess. Oh, fantastic. Well, I hope your L. Foggy is good. I'm eating my raw energy balls. Girl.
Starting point is 00:17:08 That's, I'm, I say it only because literally on here it says raw energy. What do you want for me? That's, I'm glad you showed me. Like what? Yeah, it's like upsetting, right? It's not okay. I don't know why anyone's like pitching something as balls. Like we couldn't just call those like rounds or circles or pops.
Starting point is 00:17:27 What was the first? What was the first? Round. Rounds. I heard it too. I've got my energy round. Okay. To be fair, this is not a good defense.
Starting point is 00:17:39 But as I'm going through, I'm peeling through all my family old recipes, I guess rounds. was a thing where it was like circle pastries or circles it was okay clearly i don't know about this clearly nobody else did either and that's why we have phased the phrase out so can i can i tell you something that weird that happened yesterday god please my brother picked me up and took me like to the liminal parts of kentucky where things are just kind of like back roads and everything's an antique shop except it's also like a farm stand and it's also someone's house and you're like where am I? And we were just bopping around.
Starting point is 00:18:17 And we, he was like, oh, I have to pick up. I have to run an errand. And so we stopped at a Walmart. And I was like, I'm going to go buy some snacks while you pick up the photos from like the photo counter or whatever. And it's like a super Walmart. So I'm like lost. I'm already like overwhelmed.
Starting point is 00:18:32 And I'm wandering around. And I'm like, now I'm really in a liminal space because we found like Miller light flavored pringles. And I'm like, I hate this place. Like get me out of here. So most Kentucky shit I've ever heard. It was. just felt like, oh, God. And then all of a sudden, this person approaches and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:18:48 oh, God, someone's going to talk to me. And she goes, um, excuse me, I can't find it's a cleaner for the windows. And I was like, and she looked like she's about to cry. And I was like, I'm, I'm sorry, what? And she was like, I'm trying to clean the windows. I need something to clean the windows. And we were in like a cleaning aisle, but it was like every color, every fucking like oxy clean version, you know, you're just like over. And she looked like she was about to cry. And she was probably like this, I don't know, in her 50s, this woman. this blonde woman and I'm like okay okay let me help you and I'm like I start walking with her and I'm like looking around I'm like I don't see it either and I'm like where are you from she's like Germany oh hell yeah jackpot boy and I literally spit around and I go he can Deutschmiden she was like what and I said like yeah my headtom and I just fucking like went and I was like I don't know where this came from but I was like that's so good and I was like oh my brother's here he speaks to her and like I was like holy shit this is
Starting point is 00:19:43 crazy. And then I was like, hold on, follow me. And she was like, she started speaking German. She's like, you can understand me. And I was like, yes. And she's like, I've lived here a year. She's like, I've lived here a year. And she's like, I'm so, she said in German, I'm so overstimulated. I was like, girl, I've lived here my whole life. And I'm so overstimulated inside a super Walmart. Don't worry about it. Is this a weird question? Because I don't want to be like, oh, because you speak German and she speaks German. Like, I'm not trying to like, yeah, yeah. But did you like just find your? mom a friend? Like, could she, like, have a buddy? I would never do that to Inga. I told Inga,
Starting point is 00:20:18 like, please stay away from me. You can come near me, but like the rest of us, please, where it's dangerous out there. Sometimes a man will just be in the chimney. It's like, you never know what she did. No, but so then like near the end, I was like, I was like, this is so crazy. Like I don't, like, I've been really like at home a lot in a very hermit phase. I don't like go to Walmart. I don't know. The whole thing was just so strange and like surreal. And then I found my brother and he's like where are the snacks and I was like well I had to find help Inga find the windex and he was like what the fuck like it was just a weird day but so then um we found the windex and I was like um like even Christina like what's your name and she's like I'm Inge and I was
Starting point is 00:20:59 like oh my god I can't believe I just met someone named Inga and it was so weird and I just anyway hi Inga wherever you are if you ever hear this but say it in German so she knows what's going on I think oh no she speaks English she speaks okay okay okay yeah but She was just like, I just spun around when like, I speak German. And she was like, what? Like, she was so shocked. And she's like, you're the first person who's pronounced my name correctly since I moved to Cincinnati, town or whatever.
Starting point is 00:21:23 And I was like, oh. Well, did you like, at least pat yourself on the back for being like, like, like, you were clearly like a little angel. I felt like a little German angel. And I was like, I'm so happy she felt like, like, like she could come up to me, you know, I don't know. I just felt very, um, I was like, I must have a nice inviting aura because she really looks like she was about to cry.
Starting point is 00:21:42 No, that's so nice that like you were like placed right there. She clearly needed help. It was very odd. And then yeah, my brother's like, where are the snacks? And I was like, they have Miller light pringles, you know, so we could get that. I can't think of anything more American than like if you like beer and chips. Wait until you try some beer flavor chips. My brother goes, oh, sick.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Do you think they're vegan? And I'm like, no, I don't think they're vegan. They're, promise you they're not. And they aren't. So. Yeah. That's the sickest part is the only person who would eat them is my brother. And he's vegan now.
Starting point is 00:22:10 And so he's like, he like, we found. Root beer flavored cinnamon toast crunch at Walmart and he was like that sounds delicious and I'm like you're fucking sick But like he's vegan so we can't eat it but he's like I'm like you're this is a reason you're like the world needs to protect you from this I think once you're maybe I don't know if this is true but I'm imagining if I went vegan all of a sudden anything That I couldn't taste I would just like no it's not even that he's just sick like that like he's like I don't miss anything but I would eat right your cinnamon toast crunched I'm like you fuck her I can't even imagine that flavor palette. I can't even imagine it. Well, that's very sweet. I'm glad that that happened for you. Yeah, it's like a little guardian angel. I was like, this is such a fun little
Starting point is 00:22:51 synchronicity, you know? That's so fun. I mean, meanwhile, I'm just like, I sound like a petulant child being like, my mommy wants me to a collar more. Walmart. I didn't even manage to pick up a box of pretzels. So, you know, do you have a win? A go-to when you go to Walmart? You're like, I'm going to buy this one for sure. No, I like rarely go to a Walmart. We didn't really have one nearest growing up. So I just, I'm not really in a wall. Well, apparently, and I'm so out of the zone, I don't even know what they sell anymore. Miller-Lite Pringles?
Starting point is 00:23:22 I mean, the fuck am I supposed to counter that with? Nobody knew. You're safe. Thank you. I grew up in college. I was right next to a 24-hour one-law. Yeah. That would have done it.
Starting point is 00:23:35 If I had one near me, but I lived in D.C., so, like, there was no Walmart nearby. But that would have done it for sure. well christine it's time for me to tell you a story oh wait no it's not i have to take my meds and this is a reminder to everybody that you should take your meds oh fuck well was that oh fuck i haven't taken my meds or oh fuck can we get going and i no oh fuck i haven't taken my meds oops i just i saw them sitting here and was like what are they doing and i went oh yeah that was to remind myself oh yeah i'm supposed to take that okay everyone if you're not taking your meds you still have to drink some water and on the count of three we're all going to do that ready i'm going to eat my raw energy ball
Starting point is 00:24:10 one, two, three. Yay, we're all healthy. Okay. Proud of you. So this story. I do have to take my meds later. Remind me at the intermission. To take your meds?
Starting point is 00:24:25 Mm-hmm. Okay, we'll do a B team at the end of this. Thank you. A yappy hour encore for all the people. It's like for all the kids who used to run the mile, but walk it, like me. Me, for sure. And you? There wasn't a chance.
Starting point is 00:24:39 I did not wake up thinking I'm going to run this and see what happens. What do these people think I'm going to actually do that? You know, I think I'm going to actually try that? Now that my mom is married to a former gym teacher. Oh, that's right. I get to ask him all the questions that we've always wanted to know the answers to. What does he have to say for himself? I'm like, you can't possibly think that was going to work.
Starting point is 00:24:59 You just make me run a lot. Like, what's wrong with you? Do they really know the secret about the period, lying about your period every week? I'm sure. He has a daughter. Yeah, for sure. Oh, okay. But I've said this before, but my favorite thing about when he met my friends and family, I didn't know this at the time, but before they became, before my friends became my friends when they were little little kids, they actually went to the school where he was the gym teacher.
Starting point is 00:25:24 And so when they met him for the first time thinking it was just like my mom has a new boyfriend, he came over to like drink with everybody. And we were all like post college. And he walks in and all my friends at the same time went, Mr. Sherman is dating your mom. My God, that must have been such a weird, Mr. Sherman? And they were like, he's like, you can call me Tom and they're like, that's okay, Mr. Sherman. No, no, we will not be doing that. But they finally got their revenge on their gym teacher because they were like, you want to impress us, Mr. Sherman, you run a fucking mile. Go.
Starting point is 00:25:57 Seriously. I'll time it. Oh, you got cramps today? Yeah. Likely story. But anyway, no, I don't know. That man also, he's in his 60s and he looks, I mean, he's still an active physical. contact hockey player every week.
Starting point is 00:26:10 He was meant to be a gym teacher. It's kind of freaking. Let's move on. We've been doing this for a half an hour. Jesus. Okay. Yeah, just, we're nailing it. I'm sorry, I just, I haven't talked to you in so long.
Starting point is 00:26:22 I'm just feeling yucky. I already spit my drink out. It's been like quite a doozy of an episode so far. It's a lot of me complaining about my family. Something's wrong with me. I need to take a nap. I think you just haven't talked to me in a while. You're like, I have so much to complain about about my family.
Starting point is 00:26:34 I mean, I get it. Listen, I'm biting my tongue over here. I just, yeah, it's just the chimneys as far as we're going to go. I've got more, but I'll keep it tucked in for now. Yeah, we'll keep that for the some. For something else. For the for the 60 minutes special they do. Okay, my story day is in Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Only when he's going to get any of this fucking information out of me. Whoa. Barbara Walters over my dead body. I think, I don't know who I would even want to interview me if I could do a tell-all. Maybe Chris Hansen. But not because I'm a predator. He's only ever interviewed predators.
Starting point is 00:27:13 So maybe I should. You think Chris was wrong with you. I just love that man. But I'm thinking about it, he has not interviewed anyone who isn't a trial predator. The questions he would ask would be like, he'd be like, what's your name? And also, oh, sorry, I'm not supposed to talk to you like that.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I'm trying to. He wouldn't be able to do it. I'd be like, it's new for all of us, Chris Hanson. That's okay. I'd be like, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Well, folks, it's time for me to tell you again about my financial illiteracy. My first encounters with a bank is when my mom said, you're going to college, here's a debit card.

Starting point is 00:28:57 And this is the Fess Hotel, although it is now the Great Dane Pub. Oh, that sounds fun. I like a pub. I like when it's named after a dog. a pub um what would geo be as a pub if not great dane pub would it be a god little prince my little mama's little prince pub that's so sweet because he's just a little prince oh mommy's little prince oh he'd be so annoying i have a shirt that says bubby's little matzabal could we get him a shirt that says mommy's You're going to for sure.
Starting point is 00:29:35 And it would be, they'd have something about like his butt curtain, you know, like it would be a whole thing. We could call. Oh, and then the basement, like the little speakeasy in the basement is called the butt curtain. That's incredible. Like you got to go like into the speakeasy. That's incredible. It's going to be good stuff. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:29:54 I really, I can't have a spiral. And then the food truck outside is Mama's little matzabal, right? The food truck. Yeah. I'm telling you, Mama's little matzabal is going to be there. I'm going to be in. curtain for sure. I'll meet you with,
Starting point is 00:30:05 I'll meet you in the butt curtain. We'll always have the butt curtain, you know. Aw. Um, you know, to get in, you have to access it via a big jaggy curtain. Uh,
Starting point is 00:30:14 of course. And there's, there's got to be a secret word, a code word. Mommy's little prince. I need to say it shamefully. Um, yeah,
Starting point is 00:30:25 that's good. So this is the, um, Great Dane pub now, but for a long, long time it was the Fess Hotel. It starts in the 1840s. Oh, my.
Starting point is 00:30:35 This guy named George Fess. He immigrated to the U.S., and he came to Wisconsin. He was a grocer and he opened a grocery store and, I mean, it's a restaurant, but we're calling it apparently an eating house. Ooh. Maybe that's what they used to call it before restaurants. But I did look up eating house and it sounded like it was just kind of like a tavern or something. That's what I thought, but it sounded like the description I read. it sounded more like it was a
Starting point is 00:31:03 like a walk-up stand oh like a food truck kind of yeah like when you go to like a renaissance fair and you like walk up to like a thing oh so it's just like
Starting point is 00:31:14 like right okay so it's like takeaway food but you're right eating house sounds cozier yeah whatever if we had to open an eating house today it'd be different by definition I'll tell you that it would not have any vowels in the name and it would be like eating house
Starting point is 00:31:30 and it would have like um wouts and it would be like there would be like weird little um chairs that are plastic and and you trip over them because they're clear you know what i like about you what no i don't because i can't think of a one i feel like in third grade we would have done some damage in the world of like not paying attention because we'd get oh m it would be extremely bad i say this with love i feel like it's going to sound like an insult but it's made it's made purely out of life i already feel I think we would not get anything done because we'd come up with one idea and have to see it through. It would be disastrous for everyone. I feel like you'd be like, oh, because five seconds ago we were talking about the butt curtain pub or something shit like that.
Starting point is 00:32:14 And now we're on. I don't remember where we went. Eating house or whatever. Oh, that's right. Our new industrial chic. Yeah. A boutique. A boutique industrial chic Norwegian.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Scandinavian. Don't forget that. Scandinavian eating house. That's right. 100% Um So he opened a grocery store and an eating house, which I guess is if you're a grocer and Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:32:37 I mean, why not? Deli counter. Two birds, one stone. Yeah, you have deli counter. You have some chairs. Yeah. And it's like, well, and the food is, I know it's fresh. These are, this is my food.
Starting point is 00:32:47 This is my food. Um, so he ended up starting out there making a grocery store and eating house, but he did it right next to what is now currently the hotel. So I don't know if he already had his site. set on this location or just in the beauty of storytelling like there's a foreshadowing happening where like he's bound to just be right next door forever could be eventually after the grocery store he wanted to open a hotel and specifically a hotel for the common man oh which you never see that because I feel like every hotel is like trying to be like for the business elite boutique yeah exactly
Starting point is 00:33:26 The industrial Scandinavian Norwegian. For the business elite. And we're going to scam so many people. I love it. Basically, he just wanted a hotel for the common man. And very conveniently, or he already had a site set on this, I'm not sure. The building he was working in was only two blocks from the major train station. And you know how history loves a fucking train station.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Oh, these damn train stations. So he stayed in the area he's currently in. And he was like, if I'm building a hotel, why don't I just build it right next to you or above or within the same building vicinity as my grocery store and my restaurant. And it kind of became this weird like Lego thing where he was over time just expanding, expanding, expanding, expanding. Okay, okay. So eventually he had a hotel and a restaurant. I don't know if he stuck with the grocery store. Maybe that was like not worth it for him anymore.
Starting point is 00:34:22 And he also, because this was a time when everyone traveled by horse, he, underneath the hotel built 60 stables, so full livery. Jesus, okay. Smart. Construction started in 18, in the 1850s, depending on the source, just the 1850s. And basically this was, the idea was for him to accommodate all classes of travelers and diners. So whether you were just there to eat or if you were there to stop by for the night or The common man.
Starting point is 00:34:51 The common man. It's so refreshing to not have to tell you that like this. was supposed to be the city's hub, you know, like, I'm so over that. So he built, I think it ended up being a hotel, but I think for the first couple decades when they were doing all this construction, it was more of a boarding house because it sounds like he was renting a space here, a space here until eventually like 20 years later he was able to have like the full brick and mortar owned by him and it be a hotel. Right, and he had all the parking already situated underneath.
Starting point is 00:35:20 He sure did. He had a whole parking garage of all the horses. That is crazy that a livery was a parking garage. I was just, I couldn't get my mind out of that thought of like, is that a parking lot for like an early parking lot? I needed to sit with that for a second. Let's see. Okay. But here's the problem because he built this whole thing. I mean, three ventures, three men's dreams.
Starting point is 00:35:43 And he ends up kind of shooting himself in the foot a little bit because although it was a boarding house, a livery and a restaurant, it was a temperance building. so there was no alcohol served here oh and i feel like if you're nope i feel like if you're parking your horse for the night like you want to have some fucking grog i mean please that's the that's the that's that's tell me i'm wrong that's like the the only guarantee you'd think you know surely i'm not even kidding i'd be like if there's one thing in here it's going to be beer man That's dark. In fact, the Fess family owned this hotel for 130 years and never once offered alcohol. Wow, they were proud of that. Who broke that 130 year spell because they really pissed off some ancestors, I betcha.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Well, let me remind you, it is now a Great Dane pub and brewing company. Oh, I, how could I have forgotten? The exact opposite of everything they never want. Brewing company. Wow, yeah, they're really messing with some ghosts here. it was actually a few episodes back I don't know if you would remember this but do you remember I talked about hatchet granny her name was carry a nation yes carry a name oh my god of course yes of course yes and her whole she was a big part of the temperance movement and she would go to different establishments that were serving alcohol and she would just fucking protest riot destroy yes their businesses and so this was like the only safe building in the entire
Starting point is 00:37:21 higher town from Carrie A Nation. Jeez. It was known to be one of the only places. She had her own like VIP parking spot in the livery. Yeah. Her incredibly sober horse was parked right up front and she was also parked right up front. Yeah. It was one of the only places that she was able to stay whenever she was in Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:37:39 So it was the only place that she really went that she couldn't intend to destroy with a hatchet while she was there, which is nice. It's a fresh. Wow, that's thoughtful of her. Although the business was operating throughout its construction, and it essentially took like 40 years until it was completed, there's two fun facts I wanted to tell you. One is that the windows on the first floor, unless things have changed since these articles came out. But the windows on the first floor are the same windows from the 1870s. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:38:08 That's pretty cool. Thank you. And then the other fun fact is I saw the price of a room, and I know you love an inflation moment. Yeah. The room costs $1.40. Whoa. Which today is still a fucking deal. It's $48.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Oh, wow. Okay. And think about, you probably get everything with that except grog. Yes, because the only other thing I could find was that a meal there, because if you were just stopping at the restaurant. Right. A meal would cost 40 cents. Oh, wow. Which was basically like 15 bucks now.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Wow. It feels pricey. But for an entire hotel stay. and a meal was like essentially $65. Damn. Good deal. I think it was a great deal. I would do that.
Starting point is 00:38:56 So in 1875, this is while we're in the middle of construction. So he actually never really got to see the Fess Hotel fully completed. Okay. But George Fess, he dies of, quote, a brain fever. Oh, no. I don't need to know. You hate to hear that. And his wife, Anna, carried on the hotel.
Starting point is 00:39:17 and all the expansions and for like 30 plus years was the sole proprietor of this. Turned on the legacy, the teetoteling legacy. Exactly. When she died, their son took over and the Fess Hotel actually stayed open as a family-run business until the 70s, making it even then one of the city's longest running businesses. But it carried on a, it remained a hotel just not a family-run one. They sold to a different person. Oh, I see.
Starting point is 00:39:49 And it was a hotel from the 1850s to 1994. Damn. Yeah. That's a long hotel. In the time where it was owned by somebody else, the upper floors were rented out as office storage space. So it wasn't a full hotel. But that was also around the time when the ghosts started showing up. Fun fact, this is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Starting point is 00:40:16 since 1978 and in 1994 this is when it became the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company. I have to say this is the Madison location because apparently it's a franchise. Ooh. And they're also now a stop on the local ghost tours because they are very open about there. What a fun stop to have on a ghost tour, the Great Dane Pub. I mean, like literally, I hope that they're right in the middle so you can have like a little pub crawl mode. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Or you start there and have a drink and then the tour starts. Wisconsin. They're probably all pubs. That's a good point, actually. You're totally right. That cannot be the only pub on that ghost horror. So this place has been haunted at least since it was a rental space upstairs. Mediums have come in and said that there are spirits everywhere. They said like from the mundane to the horrifying, depending on the space, there were different types of ghosts. Jesus. I don't like that they're just so present.
Starting point is 00:41:14 Yeah, there's some where I guess it's as easy as like they sensed an older man they're asking them for the time, which is crazy because I'm like, I don't think you want the time. I think you want the date, babe. Like it is. I think you want directions to the light. Whatever you're trying to get to, you're late. You're wrong. You're going the wrong way.
Starting point is 00:41:34 You're late. Oh, no. But then there's also areas where it's just really rattling. Apparently there's an attic space that has like one of those pull-down ladders and an exterminator had to go up into the attic, which is scary on its own. Yeah, I mean, as I hear them clanging around on my roof, I'm like, it's already just dangerous. And now you throw in a haunted attic. Yeah, game over. Well, they had to go into the attic and I guess she like fell to her knees and said, oh my God, something horrible has happened here. The exterminator said that. She had a gift.
Starting point is 00:42:08 There's just cockroaches everywhere, just dead cockroaches. I was going to say, I was kind of like, it's she probably just saw like an infestation and went something horrible has happened to her. And she's like, this is way beyond my scope of practice. I used to walk into my roach infested department all the time and go, oh my God, something horrible has happened to her. I told Allison a long time ago and we moved into this house, I said, you are not allowed to clutter your nightstand. Real rich coming from someone who keeps a lot of clutter under their nightstand. The one thing Allison had to negotiate, she was like, fine, I'm only keeping out my Osia. Oh, it's so nice. I keep mine out on the counter too, which like I've put most of my stuff away. I keep it on the counter because
Starting point is 00:42:46 A, it's these beautiful glass bottles, but like I use it every time I shower. And I'm like this actually, finally, I feel like my skin is actually reacting like the way I want it to, um, to a skin product. So I'm with Allison. Yeah. And she made a good choice. It's, and it's also like this beautiful glass bottle. It doesn't feel like it's from your 24 hour pharmacy. It feels like it's. Totally. Very class. Yeah, it's from, I don't know. I don't know where it's from heaven. I don't know. Malibu, I think. So close enough. The hydrologer body serum is made for everyday use or when your skin is in need of revival, cooling, refreshing, weightless, and powerfully hydrating.
Starting point is 00:43:20 And with aloe, which helps deliver an immediate boost of hydration. That's the secret, I guess. Osea's hyloronic body serum is multi-layer, hyluronic power hydration for the entire body. And right now we have a special discount just for you. Get 10% off your first order sitewide with code drink at Osea.malibu.com. That's code drink at O'S-E-A-Malibu.com. so people have not only seen that man
Starting point is 00:43:45 who asks for the time or I guess they don't see him I kind of got the vibe that they just sense him which is an interesting thing to sense but people have also seen things like floating torsos in the basement yeah
Starting point is 00:43:56 horrifying they've also seen items violently swinging from the ceiling so I guess like you know how in offices people like have like a Sharpie marker taped to the wall so you don't lose it next to the bulletin board and stuff no
Starting point is 00:44:09 Huh. But okay. I mean, I can follow that train of thought. I guess I just have never seen that before. It's like like wherever you like like a sign and cheat or something and they'll just like tape a Sharpie on a string or something. Like a clipboard thing or something. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:22 I got you. Yeah. So apparently in the middle of the night a manager was in the office by herself and all of a sudden the marker on the string started like flipping like fucking crazy all by itself. And then someone asked her what she did and responds. And she was like I laughed and went back to fucking work because I don't I have a job. I have to have this job. In a storage space below in the basement, there's an area that the staff literally call the spooky room. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Because it is so oppressive and dark and scary that not only do some staff refuse to go in there, but people have gotten the job, walked into the spooky room, and quit their fucking job. Yeah. I mean, if people are falling to their knees just doing a regular project and being like, I can't even stand it in here, like, I can't imagine. to feel funky in there. What is the closest, like what's like the most
Starting point is 00:45:14 dark oppressive haunted thing you've experienced? Ooh, that's a great question. I think it's somewhere we went. I agree. I'm trying to think of where. What would you say?
Starting point is 00:45:33 Do you have an answer? I feel like every time I'm put in a dark oppressive haunted space, I think this is the worst. Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. But I mean, that first time alone in the basement at Bobby Mackey's was something else. I think that's got to be my answer. Like that was the scary. I think the way we like then pitched it more to be more fun, but like in the moment like that was genuinely I was like I'm going to die in this Bobby Mackey
Starting point is 00:45:55 fucking basement. Like yeah. You know what's so funny is though like that like that music playing. I mean, I'm just going to start screaming right now, frankly. Hours later though, I would say the complete opposite that that was the safest I've ever felt. Yeah. It almost like didn't end up feeling as terrible afterward. Like in the moment I was like, I'm going to die in this fucking basement. And then like, I mean, there was like a thing from the proud boys on the table. We were like, where are we? I mean, we were in Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:46:23 So I guess we're always just in these spaces. Wait, where did I go the other day? That thrift store that also probably felt very impressive. No, I'm kidding. But the Walmart. Yeah, yeah. Windexile. I mean, like if I saw some beer pringles and Bobby Mackey's, I would not be surprised.
Starting point is 00:46:40 It is haunting. Deeply haunting. Yeah, I think, but I'm trying to think of like if there was a place where like one of the, I feel like outside can sometimes be, I don't know if you agree with that one of the scariest. Are you talking about that tour? What tour am I talking about? I feel like I can't, my brain won't pull up. No, no, the tour that, the ghost tour that you and I went on in Kentucky. You were like all fucking weird about that one building.
Starting point is 00:47:02 That's what I mean. Like I think my brain wouldn't conjure it. Like I was like, I need to tell me. You're like, I can't be over here. I can't be here. Oh, every time I drive past it, I don't look at it. I don't like to say the name of it. And that's where.
Starting point is 00:47:12 Batman walk by, which is now you're arguably the safest you'll ever be, but you couldn't even look at that building. No, because as a kid, Batman was my, like, shadowed person. Like, I would like imagine. The Hatman? Batman was Hatman? I think I missed. I didn't speak much English as a child. Hatman? No, Batman. Oh my God. Well, I mean, I really, and I don't know if it was because we were. That building fucked me up, man. And I still drive past it. And I still. won't look at it and I'm not going to say the name of it so don't even ask people. I feel like um when we were at Bobby Mackie's in the I mean that whole place felt really fucking creepy and scary and I don't know if it was because it was just abandoned or if it was
Starting point is 00:47:57 because we were like in the middle of nowhere no one was coming to help like yeah or if because moments before we got there someone was like hiding in there and the police had to come get him. Yeah that could have been part of the distress. I think that was part of the stress. I feel like But that basement really, I mean, for people who never got a chance to see that dungeon basement, I mean, it looks like where people truly go to die. It was like such. It's just not. And I, it's horrible. I don't know though if it was like if I was in my own head and so that's why it was scary.
Starting point is 00:48:28 I don't know if like in a spooky way, like the ghosts didn't like us yet. There was a creature down there called the crawler that this lady had told us about. Like there's a creature in this basement called the crawler. and then we literally got fucking footage of a little stick figure crawling along the walls like yeah I mean it could have just been the vibes but also like I think we were really I'm telling you though at the end
Starting point is 00:48:50 when we did that Estes method and like I was just chatting it up with them and like all of a sudden the air changed and like they were saying such nice things they were like we're gonna miss you through me I was a fucking channel I'm just sitting there like uh they're like having a grand old time
Starting point is 00:49:07 Like, how do you feel about us leaving soon? We're bummed. You know, like, it was so sweet. Like, I was like, we just become like fucking besties? That's crazy. You should have been there. I should have been there. I know.
Starting point is 00:49:19 I'm kind of glad I wasn't. I'll be honest. I would think that's probably the best ghost anything. I left my husk behind in that moment for a good reason. I had a great time. I think that was probably my favorite paranormal experience I've had. Yeah, we got to keep that footage forever, never, never, never. It was so good.
Starting point is 00:49:37 It was so good. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a vessel. I couldn't have done it without you. You're so welcome. Anytime. I, oh yeah, so this place is just super fucking scary.
Starting point is 00:49:48 They have the spooky room. It's super scary. It's oppressive. A man is seen walking up closed off stairs. And I guess the staff have tried to like stop him. Now they don't. They just go. There he goes.
Starting point is 00:50:00 There he goes again. Walking up those stairs. But originally they would say like, sir, like that's closed off. You can't be there. And before they could even finish a sentence, he vanished in front of them. Horrifying. Oh. Whoopsies.
Starting point is 00:50:11 Oh, pardon me. Oh, in the basement and sorry, the butt curtain. Uh-huh. There are a bunch of pool tables and I guess they have racks on the wall for the pool sticks. And people have seen the sticks knock themselves over one by one. Ew. Not for me, dog. And also, like, what a mess.
Starting point is 00:50:29 Come on. Like, keep it clean. Be respectful. Please. Get a grip. Get a grip. You said it, but I said it also after you, and I meant it. It was good.
Starting point is 00:50:42 It was good, doubled up. The pool cues, the little square blue guys, they've also been seen falling off the racks on their own. And this is the most common haunting that happens here. Isn't a cue this thing? What's up? Isn't the cue the, the, what, the cue is that thing? I thought so. What is the cue to you? The ball? The white ball? The triangle. I thought the pool cues are the actual stick.
Starting point is 00:51:07 Now I don't know if it was Q or Cube and I misspelled it. Like chalk cube, like the little chalk. Because a pool Q is the like thingy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right. But maybe I'm, I think I'm wrong. I don't know. Q or cube, use your imagination.
Starting point is 00:51:26 Thank you. Did not even catch that. The most common thing that happens here, though, is that the front desk's phone will ring from like as if other rooms are calling the front desk, it'll show that calls are coming from rooms that no longer exist. Ew, come on. I guess back when it first opened, they still had like switchboards. Ew, I hate that.
Starting point is 00:51:50 So the guests are still complaining from the beyond. Like, Jesus. Like bring me more towels. Oh my God. That must be so annoying. Well, the switchboard, I guess they had it even after it was no longer in use. I guess they just kept it around. I'm guessing it as decoration or something.
Starting point is 00:52:03 But it would still light up as if someone. someone was trying to call that. I don't love that. And for years, even after the switchboard was turned off and they'd switch to more modern phones, certain phone lines that were completely disconnected from previous rooms would also still ring. And it would save them like this room wants you. Yuck.
Starting point is 00:52:21 And to this day, at the front desk, the phone will ring when people know that rooms that still exist but are incredibly vacant. Yeah. People are still calling from empty rooms. Yuck. Get out of here. Some think that the ghosts that are calling are actually George and Anna Fess, upset by all the alcohol at what is now a pub and brewery and they're trapped in like a liminal room that's not existing anymore, calling down to the front desk. Like, get the beer out.
Starting point is 00:52:49 It's like whatever it takes to get all the fucking beer out of here. Dark afterlife. Carrie A Nation would be pissed. Carrie. So there's a ghost tour company that I've heard of called American Ghost Walks. Oh, yeah. Their origin story actually comes from the Great Dane pub. No way.
Starting point is 00:53:08 Because the founder was there one time and asked a waitress if the place was haunted. And the waitress said, and I quote, well, I've seen at least two ghosts, but you should probably talk to my manager because she's seen four. Not my problem. And I guess that got the future founder of American Ghost Walk's Ghost Tour Company. that got her all like jazzed up to go start creating the company and um that since she opened it she now has 25 locations fun fact all because of the fest hotel great dane pub and my last fun fact for you is that in 2021 there was construction going on right next to the hotel and by um some of the building next door getting destroyed, more
Starting point is 00:53:56 exterior building of the Fess Hotel was exposed. Does that make sense? Yes. Like, yes, yes, it does. Like, basically the tower next to it came down and so they were able to see the side of the building. And all of a sudden, they
Starting point is 00:54:12 realized that that entire time since the other building had come up, there had been a ghost sign that was preserved. on the side of this building. For people who don't know a ghost sign
Starting point is 00:54:27 is like when you look at an old building and like you can still see the old painted advertisement. My favorite thing. Which I thought it was so funny that like I'm talking about ghosts and everything mentioned this ghost sign but it actually doesn't have anything to do with ghosts. It's just that.
Starting point is 00:54:41 I love that. The weathered artifact made from a pastime. Vintage. Yeah. Yesterday. But so anyway, I do have a picture of the of the ghost sign for you. So that was hidden until 2021. It's like an original preserved sign of the hotel's ads.
Starting point is 00:55:02 Oh my God. How cool is that? So yeah, if it were exposed, it probably would have gotten all washed away. Now they can like take preserve it. That's sick. That is so cool. So it says for people, it says Fess Hotel, 75 rooms, 30 baths, free showers, rates daily and weekly. And then it says coffee.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Coffee shop, coffee something. coffee and something. Wow. Yeah. So that is the best hotel. And the building is so cool too. God. If I ever bought a building, it better have a ghost sign.
Starting point is 00:55:36 Ugh. That's all I have to say. And if there isn't, I will hire scenic people to make a fake ghost sign. So everyone's like, oh my God, what's the story there? And I'll go, that's for me to know. Mm-hmm. You know? It's a ghost sign.
Starting point is 00:55:50 Yeah. None of your business, actually. Back up. I'm not to your business. No lady in white. Shocking. I know. She only goes to the places that aren't for the common man. Well, one, good point.
Starting point is 00:56:02 And two, no grog. Come on. No grog. She's not going to be there with no grog. She's a lady in white. Why would you wait there for your long lost husband forever without being able to get fucked up about it? Totally.
Starting point is 00:56:17 Why are you going to watch the fucking horizon with no drinking your hand? Come on. Don't be ridiculous. They were all looking at that damn horizon. Like, they was a bit so bored back then. Jesus, fuck. Imagine all you have is the horizon. No internet.
Starting point is 00:56:31 No Netflix. No. No grog even. No job. Oh, my God. You have to write with your hands. All right. Good job.

Starting point is 00:59:23 Oh, and you did say, yeah. So we were supposed to record last week. And then we ended up pushing it because Christine was like, I, there's so much information here. Yeah. And I like, it's annoying because I like knew that. I should have known that. And I had to leave town. So it just ended up being not working, but.
Starting point is 00:59:38 You're good. You just totally reminded me that like this is something you worked really hard on. Okay. Yeah. It's a doozy. And I remember when it happened. Okay. This is the University of Idaho murders.
Starting point is 00:59:50 Okay. Do you remember this? Nope. 22. I know the University of California sorority girl murders. So I don't know this one. I don't know about Idaho. Okay.
Starting point is 01:00:05 It was, it was, and recently, well, okay, we'll get into it. But this is a dozy. All right. So this is going to be a two-parter. I'm just going to tell you in advance. Okay. We're in Moscow, Idaho. It's a town of roughly 26,000 residents, primarily known as a college town,
Starting point is 01:00:20 home to University of Idaho, Moscow campus, and thousands of students attended on campus. King Road is where this house was located. It was an off-campus housing for students. It was near the sorority and fraternity rows and campus itself, so students involved in Greek life often rented there. 1122 King Road was one of those houses. So in 2022, we had five friends sharing the house. Kaley Gonzalez, Madison, Maddie Mogan, Zana Kurnodal, Dylan Mortensen, and Bethany Funk. Zana, ooh, I just got full body shells.
Starting point is 01:00:52 Sorry, that was weird. Zana had a golden doodle named Murphy that she'd adopted with her ex-boyfriend, and she and her ex were still friends, so Murphy, the dog, would come back and forth between their houses. So Murphy was often at the 1122 King Road House. Bethany, the roommate, lived on the ground floor, which was also the basement. I'm actually going to send you a picture of the house real quick because it shows you just, like, what kind of building we're talking about.
Starting point is 01:01:19 Um, just looks pretty standard off campus housing. But it had access, ground floor access from the basement. Like you can see there's a parking, like a car park there. And then it also had like second floor access because there, it's on a hill. Oh, yes, I see. So there's like multiple entrances into the house. Um, and that's the house where these friends lived. Um, so there were multiple entrances.
Starting point is 01:01:48 Um, you could access. Bethany's room or go up the stairs from that basement door or you could access the second floor directly. Zana and Dylan lived on the second floor. The house was backed up against a hill. So the second floor also had the ground access. And there was a sliding door in the kitchen that also had access. Maddie and Kaylee and Kaylee's rooms were on the third floor. And that had a balcony, which you can see there, but no ground floor access. Right, right, right. Kaley and Maddie had been best friends for years. They met in sixth grade and quickly became inseparable. Maddie was the kind and qualified. Wyatt one and Kaylee was like the loud, boisterous powerhouse. They were basically like perfect counterparts. And they met as little girls. Their families became best friends. They went to high school together. And then they applied to the exact same colleges because they were like, we're not even going to different colleges.
Starting point is 01:02:34 Like that's how close they were. Okay. So they were thrilled to attend the University of Idaho together. And they moved into the King Road House where they could always come home to each other. They both got involved in sororities. They befriended Bethany, Dylan, and Zana and other friends. that didn't live with them. Eventually, they met Ethan and Hunter Chapin.
Starting point is 01:02:53 And they were members of, please tell me if I'm saying this right, Sigma Kai. Is that right? Okay. They had joined Sigma Kai, a fraternity just a few minutes walk from the house. Ethan and Hunter were triplets. And their sister,
Starting point is 01:03:05 Maisie was also a student at University of Idaho. Oh, wow. Their parents were so, like, proud of their three kids. They dropped the triplets off at campus, went to parents weekend in 2022, and they said, on the way home,
Starting point is 01:03:18 they high-fived and said, we've done it. Like, we've raised three awesome kids and just dropped them off at college together, like they're best friends. Masey Hunter and Ethan, extremely close. Hunter said we were friends with everyone, but we were best friends with each other. That's awful. I know, I know, like, this is going to break my heart. So I'm just like, okay, like it's beautiful, but I'm already upset.
Starting point is 01:03:38 Ethan was born first. His personality, he was like the boldest, most magnetic one. Hunter and Masey, although they were all triplets, obviously. They looked up to him as like the leader. Um, Kaley and Maddie were fun, deeply kind people. So when they joined the campus and like the group and the sororities, they just clicked right in with the rest of the group. Zana likewise was a wild child described by our friends who didn't know a stranger. And so they all were drawn to each other.
Starting point is 01:04:05 But as a friend friend group drew closer, they noticed that Ethan and Zana specifically were drawn to each other. They were both like the goofiest, most outgoing people in the group. and Hunter Ethan's brother was like they were like the same exact person um so they started dating and like fell in love immediately and they were like the forever couple you know in the friend group like there was no separating them and this was who were both our names um that was zana xa and Ethan okay okay and Ethan's the triplet right he's the oldest of them I thought it was the other yeah yeah I just how my brains thinking about separating him from all the other triplets. Oh, I see. Yes. He's the oldest. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:04:49 technically. So they would hang out at the King Road House almost every day, all of them in Moscow, a very small town vibe, very tight-knit community. November 12th, 2022, pretty ordinary day. They got together at the King Road House to hang out before school game, which was like a big deal, you know. They took photos together outside and Kaylee posted some of the photos to her Instagram with the caption, one lucky girl to be surrounded by these people every day. And I'm going to send you the pictures because, like, it really, this is, you might remember this if you see any of these pictures. I'm not sure, but it was pretty, it's like all over TikTok was the biggest place that it was kind of. Yes. I do remember this picture, but I cannot place it. Okay. Well, then I guess I do know
Starting point is 01:05:36 about it, but I, even clearly back then I didn't know it very well. It was hard to avoid at the time, I remember, and we'll get into it, but I remember actively having to avoid looking into it because there was so much misinformation. It was like, yeah, it gets crazy. God, they look like they're all just so happy. I know. Like, it was one of those, like, when you hear people talk about it, they were like, no, they really were just having the times of their fucking lives. Like, yeah. So this was a Saturday, and there was plenty for them to do, even in a small town. Masey's sorority was hosting a formal and she just wanted a casual fun night. So she, invited her brother, Ethan, as her date, you know, just to, like, have friends over. And some of his friends were attending, too. So that evening, she and her brother Ethan went to the formal. By 9 p.m., some of their group moved to a party at Sigma Kai near the King Roadhouse, and Maisie decided to call it a night. And she didn't feel like partying, went home to bed.
Starting point is 01:06:29 Ethan went to Sigma Kai with his friends, tried to persuade a sister to join them and said, please come hang out. We all want you here. But Maisie was too tired. So Ethan let it go and texted her, love you. Josie was likewise, their other friend, in bed fairly early that night at her own place. And she thought to herself, oh, there'll be another party. There's always another party. I'm not going to go hang out tonight. And that's just very famous last words, you know, to hear.
Starting point is 01:06:54 Yeah, very. It is. While both girls went to sleep, Ethan partied with Zana, his girlfriend, and his brother, Hunter. Kaley and Maddie were likewise having a late night. They hung out at a place called Corner Club, which was a well-known sports bar in town. And around 1.30 a.m., the two of them left corner club and stopped at grub truck, a food truck, which was one of the only options to eat out in Moscow after midnight. So by 2 a.m., all four of them were back at the King Roadhouse. Bethany and Dylan were also there.
Starting point is 01:07:21 They came home earlier. So all five roommates were home that night. Bethany, Dylan, Kaylee, Zana, and Maddie, as well as Ethan, who was sleeping with, I mean, like sleeping in Zana's. Right. With his, yeah. Yeah. So Ethan often stayed over with Zana. they basically said he basically lived there.
Starting point is 01:07:39 They said that he basically lived there. That's how much time he spent there. At 4 a.m., a door dash driver made a delivery to Zana. Bethany and Dylan were each in their own bedrooms. Dylan fell asleep. But just after 4 a.m., she woke up to some strange noises in the house. She heard Murphy bark, and that's the golden noodle. And this was very unusual because this dog rarely barked.
Starting point is 01:08:01 So she thought, like, in the back of her mind, like maybe Kaylee's playing with the dog or dancing with the dog, but then Dylan thought she heard Kaylee running and she thought she heard Kaylee say someone was in the house, but she was like half awake. Dylan opened her door and called out Kaylee's name, then shut the door, called her roommates on the phone, but no one answered. Soon after, Dylan opened her door again and thought she heard someone crying. She thought maybe it sounded like Kaylee in the second floor bathroom. And remember, this is the middle of the night. It's like 4 a.m. She later thought it might have been Zana. She wasn't sure, but she heard a man say something like, it's okay, I'm going to help you.
Starting point is 01:08:41 Oh my God. She later said, but it wasn't in like a nice way. It was just weird and it was a voice I've never heard before. Dylan called out to Kaylee again, but heard nothing. Terrified, she shut her door briefly, then opened it a third time. She stood in utter silent shock as she watched a man dressed in all black walk past, right past her, look at her, and leave through the sliding glass doors. And didn't hurt her?
Starting point is 01:09:07 Mm-mm. And she's the only survivor. One of. Okay. Dylan told the police that he saw her, this man, but he didn't say anything. He just walked right past. They looked at each other and he just left. She tried to contact her roommates by phone.
Starting point is 01:09:23 She didn't know who this guy was. No one answered, but Bethany, the other roommate, replied from the basement just before 4.30 and said, like, I haven't heard anything. So Bethany is the only other one she can get a hold of who's in the basement. Wow. Okay. And Bethany just like lucked out. Didn't witness anything. Yeah. And she's downstairs. Wow. Which is crazy because I thought for sure like the first floor people were the ones that were going to be in the most danger. It's a little bit weird. Exactly. It's a little bit weird. It's like the ups. Yeah. It is. It is.
Starting point is 01:09:54 Oh, God. She hadn't heard anything. Dylan said no one is answering. I'm going to read some of the texts here because I mean it was also so recent. Like that's the other creepy thing is like to see all the texts and. like pictures and it's all just so recent. So Dylan and Bethany are texting. And Bethany's like, I haven't heard anything. Dylan said, no one's answering. I'm really confused right now. Bethany replied, yeah, dude, what the fuck? Bethany said, Zana was wearing all black. Like you can see in the picture. And Dylan said, no, it's like a ski mask almost, like what she saw the person wearing. Like she said, I saw someone in black. And Bethany was like, well, maybe it was Zana. And she said, no, it was not Zana. This person had a ski mask. Bethany told Dylan to make a run for it to her bedroom downstairs, and she did.
Starting point is 01:10:40 She spent the rest of the morning to her bedroom. So she ran down to Bethany's bedroom and they spent the rest of the morning in there. The early morning hours felt like a blur at 7.30 a.m. Bethany made some phone calls to her parents. Dylan spent a few hours on Instagram and Snapchat. And then finally just before 1030, Dylan texted Kaylee and Maddie, are you up? And there was no response. Just before noon, Dylan called another friend, Emily, and told her that, something weird had happened last night. Emily remembered Dylan saying something like, I don't really
Starting point is 01:11:10 know if I was dreaming or not, but I'm really scared. Can you come check out the house? Emily made a joke about bringing pepper spray because nobody was like actually worried something had happened. Right. She said they had never even locked a door in this town. Like it's just not something you did. And I mean, I remember we had a in college, we thought someone broke in. It ended up being just like the curtain rod fell. But like it was a loud, scary sound. And so. It is scary.
Starting point is 01:11:39 Yeah. And we were like kind of, it turned into like a, a lighthearted laughing through it before we really went out to like check what happened. Well, they had an inside joke too about like, oh, sometimes like a pan would fall and we'd all be like, ah. And it's like, oh, it's just in the kitchen. And you don't really think this could happen to you. So of course you're playing it off being like, oh, bring the pepper spray. And these kids are like 21 years old, 20, you know, like they're kids. Like it just, I'm glad you said that because it does get into a lot of like victim blaming later, as you can imagine with the two girls not calling 911 right away.
Starting point is 01:12:11 Just really. So anyway, she, they were joking like, sure, I'll bring pepper spray. Ha ha, ha, right? So Hunter Johnson had stayed. So Hunter Johnson had stayed the night with Emily. So they walked over to the house together. And when they arrived, Bethany and Dylan were standing outside and Hunter decided to go in. Josie arrived to, and as soon as she went inside, the house itself fell off immediately.
Starting point is 01:12:36 She was like something is not right as soon as she walked in. Hunter came back downstairs, pushed Josie outside with Emily, Bethany, and Dylan, told them to call 911 and tell the operators there was an unconscious person in the house. So at 1156, Dylan made the call, but she was so panicked that Josie had to take over. And they repeated what Hunter had said about an unconscious person, but then Hunter told the dispatcher that Zana wasn't breathing. And so now the friends are like hearing this secondhand. The group became overwhelmed by terror and confusion.
Starting point is 01:13:06 The 911 call like you can listen to it's chaotic. Like they're passing the phone around. The dispatcher's like, I need to talk to one person only. I mean, the kids don't, these young adults do their kids. These young adults, they don't know what happened. So it's like they can't give much more information than like we're at the house. We're confused. Someone needs to come.
Starting point is 01:13:26 But so it's just a long rambling kind of chaotic phone call. the police finally arrive. Again, like nobody thinks anything has happened. Maybe someone's drunk or whatever. But of course, as soon as I hear like someone's not breathing, they send emergency services. And paramedics are on their way. Um, Josie later recalled thinking that even if her friends were dead, at least paramedics were coming and would be able to revive them. But when the paramedics arrived, they left like they turned around almost immediately. Um, and they didn't bring a single person out with them. So the group is like, well, what's going on? Another friend named Eva looked outside and saw police putting up caution tape and she ran over.
Starting point is 01:14:02 As soon as she saw Emily and Hunter's faces, she knew something really bad had happened. And she asked Emily, where's Zana? And Emily barely could speak it. But she just whispered she's inside and I think she's dead. Now Hunter Chapin, a different hunter, Ethan's brother was on his way to the house from the Sigma Kai house. And one of his frat brothers had woken him up and told him there were police at his brother's house.
Starting point is 01:14:26 Or at his brother's girlfriend's house. Hunter wasn't like alarmed or surprised because this house often got noise complaints and they just assumed like oh the party had gotten too wild last night um so he said I wasn't worried Ethan was six foot four and 220 pounds I was like he'll be fine when hunter got there and didn't see Ethan he assumed his brother was inside helping whoever was in trouble but then he saw his friend's expressions looking at him like the world had ended he said Hunter approached him The other hunter approached him
Starting point is 01:14:56 and told him that Ethan and Zana were gone Hunter asked where they'd gone to And the other hunter said No like I think they were murdered last night Hunter called their sister Masey The other triplet who rushed over And then he called his mom He told her that Ethan
Starting point is 01:15:13 And he didn't know how to tell his mom And of course how do you tell a mom That their son's dead She's at the grocery store Her name's Stacy She answers the phone her son says hunter says Ethan's not here and she's like she's back in Washington and she's like what do you mean and where is he and she's like he's not here and she said I don't understand
Starting point is 01:15:34 and finally said well where is he and he said she said where is he and he said you don't understand Ethan and Zana are not on this earth anymore that was the only way he could like bring himself to tell his mom oh my god so stacey left her cart in the aisle drove home called her husband and said Ethan was killed. But she didn't know anything more than that. They just packed their bags and drove to town. I can't, like, that's like a 100 year long car ride or flight. The drive to the camp, nightmare. Nightmare. Outside the house, everyone was waiting for information from the police. Like, they're just sitting basically on the road, like in their pajamas, like crying and waiting for any information, but no one's telling them anything. They're becoming frustrated and angry. And then all of a
Starting point is 01:16:17 sudden all their phones ring or get like a bit of a buzz. There is something called a vandal alert, which is the University of Idaho like alert texts. They receive a vandal alert to all of their phones. This is the University of Idaho mascot and they're referred to as a vandal. So they get these vandal alerts about critical situations on campus. The vandal alert told students that police were investigating a homicide on King Street. And this is the first that they had heard any confirmation that this was a homicide. Like they had been thinking maybe if Santa wasn't breathing, like, which they were still trying to process, maybe she had had too much to drink or something and something terrible
Starting point is 01:16:56 would happen. But now they're getting text messages from the university saying a homicide occurred inside their house. And they're like all sitting outside going what? Oh, my God. And so they start kind of shouting at the police and going like, it would have been nice if someone told us this before everyone knew, you know, at the same time. And they assumed it was Zana.
Starting point is 01:17:17 but like Bethany and Dillon didn't know who had stayed over. They didn't know if Ethan had even slept there. They didn't know if Kaylee and Maddie were still there and had gone to bed that night. Like they didn't even know how many people were still in the house. If their friends were out at someone else's house, they just couldn't get a hold of them. Then they got a second vandal alert, which said Moscow police continues to investigate the death of four people near campus. Oh, fuck. So now they're playing the process of elimination game of like, is it this person, this person, this person?
Starting point is 01:17:45 Well, they were hoping at least one of them would not have been in the house, but it turns out all four of them were. That was how they found out that Kaylee, Maddie, Zana, and Ethan were all four dead in the house. Josie began yelling at the police furious in grief that nobody had told them anything. And Hunter Johnson later said, we were all cold. We were all scared. We were there for a long time. Our brains continued to spiral. We watched the ambulance come and we watched them immediately leave.
Starting point is 01:18:11 The police were like, we didn't know the university would send out text. the university had just kind of done that without really thinking, I guess. They were all separated and questioned by police individually. Meanwhile, Maddie's boyfriend, Jake, failed to get in touch with Maddie, so he called her mom and said, Karen, do you know what's going on in Moscow right now? He told her there was apparently an open homicide investigation at Maddie's house. And her mom was like, what? And he said, well, we don't know who's been killed. So Karen starts calling her daughter Maddie but couldn't get a hold of her.
Starting point is 01:18:41 And so she tells Maddie's stepdad Scott and says, well, Maddie and Kaylee are fine. I'm sure they're fine. Let's go down and have lunch with her. Let's pick her up. We'll ask what happened and make sure she's okay. So Karen called the Moscow police from the car who confirmed there had been a homicide at Maddie's address but could give them no further information. I can't even imagine the fucking terror.
Starting point is 01:19:02 Well, I think they just like didn't allow that to be a possibility at the time. They were like, well, we'll go get her, you know. I know, but to just hear like we can't give anything. We can't tell you anything. I'd be like, oh, my God. Like, this is killing me. They imagine that it had been Zana or one of the girls' other friends. They were like, we'll just go pick up Maddie and Kaylee, drive them home.
Starting point is 01:19:24 But when they arrived, an officer took them to a private room and said there was not just one victim. There were four victims. And Maddie and Kaylee are both dead. Oh, my fucking God. Stacey and Jim, the parents of the triplets, also arrive at the police station and they learn that Ethan is dead. It's just crazy because the night before the three triplets had been dead. together, like spending that evening together. And Stacy had actually looked at their phone, their locations in the Life 360 app and like felt so content in her heart that like all three of her
Starting point is 01:19:53 triplets, like all three of her kids were together. Like, um, that she didn't have to worry about them. Yeah. And she was like, she just remembered looking and feeling like, like they have each other. Yep. And went to bed. Ooh. Yeah. So Jim said in, uh, an interview. It drives me crazy because I always wanted to protect my family and there was nothing I could have done. Instantly he was taken and I couldn't do a thing about it. The families were, you know, booked into hotels. Hunter Johnson, who was the one who had walked in and like seen whatever he had seen and then ushered everyone out and had basically been like the leader of the day. He started to like basically crash out because it's like he'd been the one all day, the point person. He'd been the one to be like to tell everyone what had happened,
Starting point is 01:20:36 to tell Hunter his brother was dead, like to keep everyone out of the house, to talk to police. So he starts like really feeling the effects of this trauma. And Emily later said he had actually saved most of them from a lot more trauma by refusing to let anyone inside because they would have wandered up looking, you know, if he hadn't like refused to let them in. He really took one for the team in a really bad way. Yes, absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:00 Absolutely. As the day progressed, Ava described him in complete shock, looking like a ghost. He and Emily couldn't sleep that night. They didn't know anything still. they just heard the words isolated and targeted in the news reports. And they were like, isolated and targeted. Like, what is this? I mean, you've got to feel like you woke up in a fucking time warp, you know.
Starting point is 01:21:21 Yeah, horror movie. The reports were meant to reassure the rest of the town that there was no further danger. Like the killer wasn't on the loose, you know? But then the friends were like, well, what do you mean? Like, how do you know that? And who is it? And how, like, are we safe? Like, we're part of the group.
Starting point is 01:21:35 Like, it just didn't make sense. And they didn't feel safe, you know? No. And my first thought, too, would be. Like one of them knows I saw them. Totally. And then walked away. I'm absolutely next to see.
Starting point is 01:21:45 And he's still out there. And then they're saying like, don't worry. This was targeted. And it's like, well, to me too. Like it's just all. Right. All very confusing. They said they didn't sleep for days.
Starting point is 01:21:57 Like were they being stalked? And they could get no information, you know. And were they staying in the house? No, no, no. They were staying in hotels. Yeah. Or around Moscow. Well, these two were staying at their apartment.
Starting point is 01:22:09 They didn't live in the house. So, um, got it. The Emily and, uh, hunter, the other hunter lived, lived off property. But yeah, a lot of them talked about like just not sleeping in the days after every sound made them jump. They were like terrified that this they'd be next. They didn't, again, they didn't even know what had happened.
Starting point is 01:22:27 They just heard like targeted homicide and never saw their friends again. Would be a really bad time for the pan to fall in the kitchen. Totally. Exactly. Exactly. They said every sound made them jump for days. Um. There was just more silence from police.
Starting point is 01:22:42 Everyone was terrified. Parents were calling the school demanding answers. Like, but how the dean of students was like, this is not something I was prepared for. In lieu of police statements, the mayor spoke to the media, but he also didn't have any information. So it was like, they're just like setting out comforting words, but it's just like making everything more convoluted and confusing. It had actually been more than six years since the last homicide in Moscow. And he described the city's plan about major crime as woefully. deficient. Like this was not something this town was equipped for whatsoever.
Starting point is 01:23:13 Three days after the murders on November 16th, Moscow police held an extremely brief press conference where all they did was confirm that Zana, Ethan, Maddie, and Kaley were all dead and that they had all been stabbed to death. Oh my God. Oh my God. And also that sounds like, I hope I'm getting everyone's names right, but it sounds like original hunter who went up and saw, I'm saying original hunter because there's two of them. It sounds like if they were stabbed, to death for him to just come downstairs and say she's unconscious he was saving them even further grief that's what i wonder because we don't know the extent of what he saw okay but he saw either someone on the ground and like i i don't know how much i don't know what he saw but yes like what you're
Starting point is 01:23:58 saying it's what i wondered as well like how how much some was this thing that he saw that he would but but maybe but then he said oh all i could all i saw was that someone was unconscious so it's like maybe he just saw and didn't and he knew himself not to go any further you know i i don't know but i was wondering that exact same thing um so a reporter asked about witnesses living in the house and why they didn't call 911 until hours after the murders occurred the police chief responded i don't think that i ever said they were witnesses i said they were there so despite his defense on behalf of dylan and bethany tens of thousands people would soon be asking these same questions the police basically just zip their lips after this.
Starting point is 01:24:41 They were like, we don't have any more information. We don't want to compromise any of our leads. But everyone, the world, was watching this unfold. And people were becoming obsessed. This is when, like, I remember TikTok was going crazy about this. I mean, it was nuts. Reporters from major media outlets began hounding the victims, families, and friends. Karen remembered someone approaching her while she was trying to get the mail.
Starting point is 01:25:04 And she was like, I, I, they didn't even know her. daughter's name. They said like your daughter was one of the people killed right. Like can we talk about it? And she's like get out of me. Can we talk about it? Can we talk about it? Can we talk about my yard? Can we talk about this situation? She said. Get out of here. Like you nosey motherfucker. Get out of here. What's wrong with you? Get a fucking spine. Yeah. So she just became afraid to leave the house obviously. Hunter Chapin, um, the brother of Ethan began receiving as many 20 calls a day from like mainstream media outlets asking for interviews. Um, he and all of his friends were getting DMs, constantly on all their social media. And then of course content creators took over and YouTubers,
Starting point is 01:25:44 podcasters, TikTokers became like, you know, armchair experts and started dissecting every shred of information. And this is when I remember going, this is going to get bad and messy. People are making leaps and bounds that like, I know if I watch this, I'll be like, oh, interesting. Like I'm not even putting my brain into that pattern. I've always, I'll tell you, in case. I remember, yeah. In case people need to hear it again about you, I've always appreciated that, and that's why you drink, you have intentionally waited until all the facts were out there before you've reported on something because you're like, I do not need to find out
Starting point is 01:26:19 something and then have to like take it back later. Yeah. And I only watch like sources where I'm like, because I'm like, how you can go so easily down. I know that. Like, I do that. You can go so easily down a rabbit hole. And like when it's people's families and lives, I mean,
Starting point is 01:26:34 got really bad. They basically started like taking every piece of like information and and trying to turn it into something, you know. And then they started visiting Moscow and like basically just harassing random people in town and asking questions and recording people in their homes and walking into classrooms on campus. Just constant harassment when all you want to do is not think about this for five seconds. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:02 When you just want to try to get through the day. One documentary covering the case even shows a TikToker who, like, used, like, a real estate listing to go through the house and, like, give a tour of the house with, like, creepy music underneath. Oh. And she, I know. It's really a, get a fucking. Read the room. Yeah. She says, we're going to go into Zana's bedroom.
Starting point is 01:27:23 And it's, like, this viral trending, like, creepy music underneath. And she, like, walks into the, like, come on. It feels extra. This is, this is not my first thought, but it is, like, a, my third or fourth thought is like this is also additionally violating for the people who are who survived this and it's like well now everyone knows my fucking house looks like and I'm already scared of anyone coming over at any point and hurting me. I mean they're not living there anymore. It's definitely just a crime scene at this point. But yeah. No, it is like the memory of like
Starting point is 01:27:54 the memory of that place with your friends. Oh yeah. They're they're fully like getting completely docks from the inside out like people are stalking them. People are DMing them and harassing them. bullying them and threatening them. Hunter Johnson, who was the only one to enter the crime scene and like basically held down the fort, he became a target because a police body cam video surfaced from a prior noise complaint where it showed that he had zip ties on his wrist. So he'd been playing like some game like champagne and shackles, some like frat game, you know, where you like zip tie.
Starting point is 01:28:29 Like Edward Forty Hands or something like that. Yeah, exactly. Where you zip tie like you're tied to each other. you finish your drinks, whatever. But like, nobody wanted to hear that. Even though, like, I hear that. I'm like, yes, that's exactly what they were doing. Because I know what.
Starting point is 01:28:43 I've been to college. I know what dumb college kids do. But, like, I guess people were like, oh, my God, he has zip ties. He must be the killer. And it's like, what are you talking about? This was, like, a noise complaint from, like, another time. Like, it's just weird. I'm like, it's too much.
Starting point is 01:29:00 They believe the zip ties were, like, clues. And they said, like, he killed his best friends. and and then of course like emily's his girlfriends were like emily was in on it too dillan and bethany were scrutinized again and again because they hadn't called 911 um but it was like 430 a m and they were confused and they knew each other was awake so they were like and also like as like someone in my mid 30s of course i would call the police immediately but when i was 21 i would think like someone might have had a friend over and like i were all drinking and like and it's dark and people are always in and out of the house in and out exactly they don't
Starting point is 01:29:33 walk the doors. It could just be somebody. And especially when the guy just looks at you and keeps walking. And also like this is like a silly little thing. But if when I was 21, I was scared to call the I've called the police. I've called the police so many times since. I know right. Now once you move to LA, you're like, never mind. It's just a part of my job. I just like, oh, I just see something to say something. But when I was 21, I would have been like if I'm calling 911, like it has to be an incredibly serious emergency and I don't want to bother anybody. And totally. And I lived in D.C. But like you and these kids live in like a college town where it's like there's not like crime on you know like there's not like homicides on the corners you know also when I was 21 I still had that like like impervious
Starting point is 01:30:13 mindset of like nothing could hurt me nothing would ever happen in my circle that's part of college so like I wouldn't believe something I would be in total denial than anything could happen to me for me to even want to call I just I would justify it so quickly of like it's four in the morning someone's finally going home after hanging out like it was just some dude and whatever whatever, they got rid of him and like, now I'm with my friend and we're just going to sleep in the same room tonight and figure it out in the morning. Yeah. So that, yeah, they started getting, I mean, just online hatred for the girls especially grew so strong. People were posting things like, it's Dylan Dylan's fault. Her friends died. I hope she feels the guilt forever and it haunts her
Starting point is 01:30:50 laughing emojis. Girl, if you ever hear this, that is a fucking lie. Don't at all feel that way. Oh my God. And quote, you can't convince me that the remaining roommates are innocent. I see. I don't care. And these got like thousands. Like people were just like so evil. It's just rough. At 4.17 a.m. A. A security camera near the house picked up the sound of a dog barking, voices possibly whimpering and a loud thud. People didn't think it was possible that like the camera could pick up the sounds, but Dylan didn't know what was happening. And it's like, you don't know what's happening. It's a dog barking. And she also heard the dog barking. And she also heard voices. Whatever. We. Speaking of dogs barking. Oh my god. So did Hank. Hey, hey, enough. We're teaching him the word enough. It doesn't work yet. Hank, enough. Yes, good job. Yes. Oh, wow. He had to do one more.
Starting point is 01:31:45 Good job, chicken. Oh, your treats are somewhere else. Go get mommy. Where's mommy? We taught him where's mommy? Oh, the famous heart glasses got a little trippy this week. I got to wear him around to new, some new locations and people were like, what are those bad boys? And they got some airtime. Man, they were nailing it. Starting point is 01:33:19 at 4 30 a.m she was really out of it everything was blurry and confusing um i don't think she needs to explain it any further but apparently people just couldn't take her explanation. Courtney Franklin, who teaches courses at Washington State University, which include violence against women and gender and crime, later said in a documentary that in a threatening or dangerous situation like this, behavior that seems wrong or strange is actually, quote, exactly how we should expect someone to behave because you're not going to be necessarily thinking logically and rationally.
Starting point is 01:33:49 Folks are not going to understand that this behavior is a behavior of someone who has just experienced trauma. Like you don't know what you're going to do. 100%. And people just can't wrap their minds around that. People just continue to attacking Dylan and Bethany online. News outlets were posting articles suggesting the girls could be criminally charged for failing to call 911. And it's like, where are you getting this information?
Starting point is 01:34:11 You're just making it up. And honestly, I would still feel this way. I want to say when I was 21, but I'd still feel this way. If someone ever threatened any criminal charges on me, I'd fucking lose my mind, especially like on top of being a scared 21-year-old who is fully traumatized. who just lost a bunch of my fucking best friends and now you're going to throw at me that I'm going to jail.
Starting point is 01:34:31 I would witness the killer and probably escaped with my fucking life like on a dime, you know? I would be on spiral. Also, maybe we were intentionally glossing over this that the dog also die. No. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:34:47 Yeah, no, the dog did not die. Great. So Maddie's boyfriend, Jack, wasn't even in Moscow the night of the murder, he was in Boise. that he even was receiving like death threats and stuff. And he's like, I wasn't even in town.
Starting point is 01:35:01 Like, it's just these poor kids. He stayed with Maddie's parents for a while where he felt safe. But then online slews found out that the grub truck where they had gotten late night food had, like they did a Twitch, they do a Twitch live stream where they basically live stream their food truck all night. And people could just like tune in and watch like people order food. So watching back through archives, viewers found Maddie and Kaylee in the footage. And it was hours before they were killed.
Starting point is 01:35:26 and you can like see them come up and order food and like it's just so unsettling. People became convinced that someone at the food truck had followed them home that night. And soon everyone like kind of found this one guy in the background. They hummed in on him and said like he's wearing a hoodie and waiting on his food. He's looking at them strangely. And they of course pretty quickly figured out who he was fully docks him. TikTokers posted videos of him at the food truck like slowed down saying who is food truck? guy, University of Idaho frat boy possible stalker.
Starting point is 01:35:59 This poor fucking guy. Like he literally fucking decided, hey, it's like a Friday night and I'm going to go put on my favorite black hoodie and go get me something from the grub truck. And now he's like, big mistake. Whoa. Wow. The caption even said, always purposely bumping into Kaylee out in public, alarming siren emoji.
Starting point is 01:36:17 Another friend, Ashlyn, saw people calling the home a party house with an open door policy. And she was like, that's not a. it all true. This was a safe place with a good group of friends that went in and out, but it wasn't a party house. And it wasn't somewhere where randos were walking through. This was like really respectful and like a nice house. Yeah, like a nice house with a dog and a group of good friends. In a police interview, Dylan told an officer she didn't even know how the attacker had gotten in. She said, I usually lock the doors. We've never had problems like this before. Rumors started that Ethan was involved in drug dealing, like literally any possible avenue you could think of that,
Starting point is 01:36:59 like, people would come up with some sort of theory that he had given his roommates, like, laced drugs and they'd all overdosed was one of the theories. Others said, like, a drug dealer had killed everyone, like, as revenge. Spoiler alert, none of this is true, okay? The rumors about Ethan became so severe that his parents became shaken and asked Maisie and Hunter, like, was Ethan involved in drugs? And they were like, no, like, don't. let any of this get to you. Like none of this is real. Um, Ethan was not involved in any sort of drug
Starting point is 01:37:30 scene. Um, this just all seemed random and horrifying. Um, it's also so heartbreaking for the parents because now they're like all of a sudden questioning their own kids. Their own reality of like what was even going on. Um, a friend of the group named David also became like an obsession for some investigators because he was a volunteer sober driver for the Sigma Kai party and he was asking people if they needed rides that night. So people were like, oh my God, he's like trying to get people in his car. And it's like, he's the D.D. Shut the fuck up, everybody.
Starting point is 01:38:01 Oh, my God. Someone messaged him, even if the cops don't get you, someone will. I promise you enjoy everything while you still can. And I hope you fry. And he's like, I was literally just the driver that night. And like literally like you're doing a good deed. You're like, I'm intentionally trying to make sure everyone gets home safe as a safe person. and now I'm being told that I'm a violent, dangerous person.
Starting point is 01:38:24 That I'm going to fry for the rest of my life, yeah. Oh, my God, wow. So now they're scared not only of, like, the killer, but, like, that some vigilante's going to show up and, like, punish them for something they didn't do, you know? I mean, I can understand, like, trauma after trauma after trauma. A whole college full of, like, young kids who, one are just young kids and, like, nosy and want to, like, speculate. But on top of it, they also lost their friends, so there's some, like, vested interest in
Starting point is 01:38:51 this. like I can understand why everyone's a target for a second but like the way that this is like so blowing out of proportion is crazy to like turn this into yeah it's just yeah became like a circus a total circus um like Masey and Ethan or Maze and Hunter lost their brother and now they're like being blamed for it too it's just all they like they like can't even grieve no um and on top of that they're expected to be like gracious and kind and put together on interviews or like on you know like any sort of like public appearance otherwise they're going to look even more suspicious or whatever. Just really rough. Bendowit, who wrote for the student newspaper and had known Zana since elementary school, said a lot of people, even professional reporters, lose their humanity around high-profile murder cases because they just think of it as a story. Reporters were following students around campus.
Starting point is 01:39:43 It was just like terrible behavior. People who were connected in any way to these kids, this case, had to delete social media quit their jobs like it got really bad the universe held a vigil for the four friends hunter chapen was required to go with an FBI escort and of course then people started swirling like oh you know and then there's people started this rumor that there was going to be a mass shooting at the vigil and it's like what are you doing um yeah so on november 20th moscow police held a second brief press conference during which they explicitly ruled out Bethany, Dylan, and the man at the food truck as suspects said, do not harass these people. They have nothing to do with it. When asked again why they believed
Starting point is 01:40:28 the attack was isolated and that no one else was in danger from this murder, the police said they couldn't release any more information and said, quote, to be honest, you're going to have to just trust us on that at this point. A public autopsy had confirmed that all four victims, had been murdered with the same weapon, which appeared to be a large fixed blade knife. But what the public did not know was that the killer had accidentally left behind the knife sheath next to Maddie in her bed. This was a critical mistake, especially after investigators collected DNA from a button on the sheath and were able to trace the sheath's owner to its source. And that is the end of part one. It's just horrible.
Starting point is 01:41:18 That was really well done though for something that is overwhelmingly full of information. Well, thank you. Sersha was a great help to me on that. And I watched, so there's this documentary on Netflix that's very well known, but it has like the body cam footage of them finding everything. And it's like very alarming to watch like the kids. outside and the police being like what's like just being going from like oh i'm sure like there was just a party here to like something really terrible has happened um you even watch them like figuring out where where the dog's going to go and all this like it it's unsettling but yeah
Starting point is 01:42:05 so that's the story do we know if the dog barked to be like to protect the owner or like just trying to get help because he was locked in a room or oh the dog barked when the intruder was in the house somewhere. We just don't know what really happened. But the dog was untouched? Mm-hmm. Okay. Well, still, it's so terrible.
Starting point is 01:42:24 Whatever the dog saw, Jesus Christ, I can't imagine. I know. Well, good telling it. I'm excited to hear the part two because I'm ready to find out who actually did this. Oh, God. Yeah, don't check the internet because it's very... I will not. Very timely.
Starting point is 01:42:41 Well, I'm melting to death. You are melting to death. Got it. Okay. Well, I wish you easy breezes. Oh, thank you. I'm going to try not to look out the window, though, because the man on the roof is still there, and he's still tipping a little bit on his ladder and is giving me some really deep-seated anxiety.
Starting point is 01:42:58 If I saw someone working on a microphone, though, and I was standing in, I would hope they were talking about me. You know what I mean? I feel like I would be like they're about to, like, broadcast my death off this ladder to the rest of the world. I'm arguably the safest I'll ever be because someone would report it immediately. witnessing this, yeah. All right, well, I'll see you next week then. And that's why we drink.
