On tonight's instant reaction show, the Big Ten has offered an explanation for the end of the Western Michigan, Michigan, why one second was put back on the clock.
And they have included replay center video.
We'll be playing that on the show.
Plus, LSU annihilates Clemson, destroys Clemson.
We can talk about LSU because they looked awesome.
But we probably, we probably got to have a real serious conversation about Clemson.
at this point.
Plus, everything else had happened in college football today.
It was a wild, wild day.
You had Auburn stuffing Baylor on the goal line.
You had incredible debuts for Matt Campbell and John Somerall at Penn State in Florida.
You had, well, you had Western Michigan, Michigan.
So that's where we're going to start.
All on tonight's is reaction.

Welcome to Annie Narion 3, presented by Polly Market.
It's an instant reaction show, and we have a lot to instantly react to Ari.
We will get to what happened in Baton Rouge, but we got to go back to Ann Arbor because we now
have an explanation from the Big Ten for why an extra second was put on the clock at the
end of the Western Michigan-Michigan game.
I'm not sure anybody's going to buy it.
I'm not sure we're going to go for it.
But remember, if he wanted longer discussion of this,
Ari and I did a video within basically a minute after the Hail Mary.
While we were still in shock.
Yes, we were in shock because it was one of the most shocking results in the history of college football.
And I said in that video, you know what they need is replay center audio and replay center video like the ACC does.
Well, guess what they sent?
replay center video.
I'm going to read the statement first
and then we're going to play
the video from the replay center.
So this is a statement from the Big Ten.
Following video review
was determined Western Michigan's number 18
started his jump from an established
out of balance position, his left foot,
and made contact with the ball
with one second remaining on the clock.
As shown in the provided video
of what was viewed during the replay process,
a side-by-side view of the play and the game clock
using a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium
was used to determine the final ruling.
85 minutes prior to the game,
all broadcast cameras used for the replay system,
including the camera on the game clock,
are synced using a strobe system
to ensure all cameras are aligned.
Per NCAA football rule 4-2-3-A,
a ball not in player control,
other than a kick that scores a field goal,
is out of bounds when it touches the ground,
a player, a game official,
or anything else that is out of bound or that is on or outside a boundary line,
and thus the clock is stopped.
Producer River, play the video, please.
TV's embedded it.
Yeah, we're taking a look here.
Okay, he's jumping from out of balance.
So when 18 is touching the football, Jim, do you see that?
It's dead when he touches the ball.
When 18's touching the football, we've got one second on the clock.
Do you see that?
I'll just keep you know because I do.
But just to hold on.
And we've got him.
Did you hear me?
Jim, are you with me?
Yes.
Can you hear me guys?
Yes.
We are going to put one second on the game clock.
Yeah.
And we're going to have another play from the previous spot.
Okay.
Okay.
So after review, there's one second remaining.
Okay.
Here's the thing.
The shot on the TV shows that clock at zero when the ball touches Davis's hand.
So either.
the TV shots wrong and there was one second left on the clock or the replay shots wrong
and there wasn't one second on the clock.
I, Ari, that's the confusing part about this.
How do you?
Yeah, I don't know how you do this, but those two things need to match.
Yeah.
Because if you send out a video showing us a sequence where someone touches the ball and there's a
second left, I'm very amicable to that. I'll buy that. I'll accept that. But the problem is, is that
all after, or all evening after the plate happened, I watched the same exact movement and the same
exact player touched a ball. And when he touched it in the other angle, it was zeros. So which one do
you trust? I mean, Andy, I think that you probably should, I mean, I guess just trust the big 10 one,
right? I mean, that's the official. Nobody's going to do that. Nobody's going to trust them.
And it's the official, it's the official room of it.
Yeah, we had, we had, it's funny because we had Tony Petiti, the Big Ten Commissioner, on our show on Thursday.
And he actually did the interview from the Big Ten review center, which he is not allowed in on Saturdays.
Like he doesn't even have key card access to it.
He had to have somebody let him in.
So we got a clip of him talking about that.
It's just crazy that this wound up.
What?
That room wound up so much.
Yeah, here's Tony Petiti.
I'm in the replay center.
This will be the only time I'm in the replay center.
I don't even have an ID to get in here.
That's right.
You're not allowed.
I forgot about that.
Let me in because I just don't,
we have a command center upstairs where we can watch games.
But this replay center is really just for our replay officials.
We don't come in here at all.
It's just something that we just decided.
And so every time I want to give a tour,
I have to like, it has to be let in.
Well, at least your PR guy has a key.
So that's good.
Don't overturn any calls while you're there because that's a problem.
It's pretty dark in here.
There you go.
I was great to quit you guys.
Thank you so much.
Andy,
my wife's friend had a birthday party this weekend and the theme of it was bring your conspiracy theory that you buy into.
And people are presenting their conspiracy theories.
And the reason why I bring that up is because everybody believes conspiracy theories about all sorts of things.
and like the entire chat is like saying that's AI, it's doctor, don't believe it,
don't be stupid, Ari.
And it's just like, we do live in a time where you could change the video.
We do live in a time where it's hard to trust what you see.
But, you know, if the Big Ten, like, because here's what I thought was going to happen.
I thought the Big Ten was going to release a statement on Monday saying,
we after a further review, there was a second.
There shouldn't have been any time left.
They released.
They released the replays in her video within a couple hours.
Now, here's the thing.
you know what would make more people believe it
if it had been broadcast during the game as it happened
like the ACC.
I agree.
So you didn't have two hours of doctoring time, I guess.
But, you know, the thing is, it's kind of hard to not trust what we saw.
We all saw it with our eyes.
So what you're telling us by showing us that video is
that the clock that we were watching the game on was wrong.
Which also, if that's true, if the Big Ten replays,
Center video is the truth.
And the clock we saw during the game podcast was off.
That's a problem too.
Yeah.
Like you've got to fix that now.
Fix that before Oklahoma and Michigan play there next week.
But it looks like regardless of what you're going to believe,
and we're not here to change anyone's mind or to get you to believe whatever you want.
We're not going to change anybody's mind.
I can tell you that right now.
We're not even attempting to change anyone's mind.
But what I do know is.
is that we're not getting any statements on Monday saying,
hey, we made the wrong call.
Sorry, Western Michigan.
It looks like the big tennis standing by their officiating and saying the correct call was made.
Like, that's what they did, right?
That's exactly what they did.
Yeah.
I don't know that I believe that's AI, Andy,
because why go through all of the AI?
You could just say, we made a mistake.
Sorry, Michigan won, move on.
I mean, it's not like that's the first time that's happened in sports.
It's just funny how they show us the same exact sequence that we all watched and the time was wrong.
So you have to pick which one you decide you want to trust.
And that's the thing.
Like TV has a camera on the game clock as well in the stadium.
Like it's not just a digital thing that NBC has.
Like they also have a camera on the clock.
Right.
And that's the clock camera that I thought we were looking at was the scoreboard one.
So, well, you know, this.
isn't going to change anyone's mind.
It's good that they released a statement.
I'm happy we got an explanation.
But, you know, it's really hard to get people to accept anything in this world,
let alone an AI doctor Big Ten video.
I'm just kidding.
We are not accusing anyone of doctor any video.
Also, why would they have to use AI?
Just change the time on it.
You could still use the video.
Yeah, you wouldn't.
You could do that the old-fashioned way.
Yeah, like they could have doctored the video in 1994 if they wanted to.
They don't need the AI for it.
But, yeah, but I feel like, you know, in the past,
we have seen mistakes happen in conferences and officiating
on up to those mistakes.
And that's not what's happening here.
This is not going to change anybody's mind.
And, you know, this will probably increase mistrust in the games themselves.
And again, that video had you shown it to us live,
more people would trust it.
Yeah, maybe this is the thing that has to happen for the Big Ten
to actually usher themselves into the ACC future
and show us it in every replay for every game.
I don't know what the downside is for it.
The ACC hit a home run with that.
Yeah, the downside is when you have one
and everybody's really confused.
Like, remember the Miami-Virginia Tech,
hell Mary one?
Of course.
That one, I think, you know,
we don't know what everybody said.
in the replace center because they weren't doing that yet.
But I'm guessing everybody's like, I can't see a thing.
I have no idea what happened.
Like,
yeah,
that's the part.
I don't think they want that to happen,
but that's going to happen eventually.
And I also don't think that that's bad.
No.
It's human.
Like that's part of life.
Yeah.
Like,
I mean,
if you can't tell or it's too close or it's,
the angles aren't there,
then,
I mean,
Andy,
we played football for a century without being able to look at it again,
even one time.
Like,
Andy,
when you were a kid watching the NFL,
how many bullshit fumbles,
happened that changed the course of the game that weren't even close to being a fumble.
It was just part of the game.
Right. And we never asked the question, what is a catch until instant replay happened.
A catch was what the ref said was a catch back then.
Well, I don't think this is over.
I think this is going to have a little longer tail.
I'm sure the Big Ten would love for it to be over right now.
Yeah.
I'm sure Michigan, I mean, they're thrilled with the win.
Western Michigan, I think much of the public.
believes they won.
I'm happy to say, I'm with you.
I think you won.
So, I don't know, celebrate a win,
and you can put it in the records.
I mean, anybody can say anything they want now.
Andy,
want to take a second to recognize Lance Taylor
for the type of gentleman
that he was at for the game?
Oh my God.
Yes, please.
Let's play that video from Andrew Graham of Minton Football
of Lance Taylor, Western Michigan's coach,
after the game.
I, we had him on the show.
in March, wonderful guy.
I could not be this mature
about something like that, ever.
So I had not seen the clip.
Several people have mentioned it to me
that the game was over.
I think, you know, one,
our commissioner has already reached out.
You know, normally he handles those type of situations
and reviews.
I thought that this, the crew tonight
did a really nice job handling multiple,
close calls and review situations. We, you know, we had several where, you know, the spot was,
questioned and reviewed and, you know, those calls went our way and the review went our way. And so,
listen, you know, I'll let, you know, our commissioner and those guys handle it. At the end of the day,
you don't always control, you know, those situations or is there a second left on the clock?
We talk a lot about, you know, just respond, regardless of what the circumstances are.
We can't control whether there's a second left on the clock or not.
We went out the first time.
We defended perfectly, you know, the Hell Mary situation.
I thought our guys did an excellent job.
I know when I looked up at the clock, it was past zero before we touched it.
I do that they would review it.
It was the last play of the game, and because we defended it so well, wasn't, you know,
worried or concerned about our guys going out and defending it the second time.
And unfortunately, we did not defend it as well the second time.
A little bit different, you know, he threw it the first time he threw it towards the back
of the goal line and, you know, out of bounds.
The second attempt, you threw it towards the front of the goal line and, you know, the receiver
went up.
made a nice play and was able to get it into the end zone.
And, you know, I think that's a good lesson.
For our defense, we can't just box out the back of the end zone.
We've got to make sure that we'll cover them up at the front, front pylon as well.
So we'll learn from that and grow.
And, you know, I'll, I'm sure I'll watch the TV copy tonight.
Andy, Coach, what was your message to your voice?
You, like you said, you dominated?
Andy.
So, you go ahead.
Can I be frank with you?
You may.
I'm being serious.
There have been times in my life in the recent year and a half that I've been playing NCAA video game.
And the internet lagged while I was playing somebody on the internet.
And I have gotten so frustrated from that that I have thrown my controller.
I cannot imagine getting what I, because Lance Taylor thought they won.
He was at midfield celebrating.
I cannot imagine the internal turmoil that that human being must be going through with that life achievement.
That's something that he would be remember for forever.
To think you had it, to think it was done, to have that ripped away from you and to lose in one of the most backbreaking ways, regardless of the time, even if they would have lost if there were three seconds left that way, that way, how awful that would have been.
And for him to walk into that room and to be so classy and to keep his cool and to not disparage anybody into I'm just like kind of blown away about how good of a human being you have to be.
Because I'm trying to think about me and when I lose my cool, which is all the time and about the useless nonsense bullshit that I, that ticks me off.
and I see somebody's life could have been different.
and five, 10, 15 minutes later after that happens
and addressing his heartbroken team to be able to, like, what a man.
Like, I have a lot of respect for him.
That's like, and I'm not, I'm usually a jokester.
No, I'm like kind of blown away.
This is one of those things, because Lance Taylor, I think,
was already on some short list.
They won the Mac last year.
This is, this is a good program he's put together.
He's obviously worked for Nick Sabin.
he's worked at Stanford.
He was Christian McCaffrey's position coach.
He's done a lot in the game already.
Yeah.
When ADs are looking, I know to Power Conference,
ADs are looking at the way he handled this tonight
will be one of the things that puts him on more lists for sure.
You're probably right.
Now, I want to add some context to this because the Mac has now released a statement.
The Mid-American Conference, that's the conference that Western Michigan's in.
So this is from John Steinbrenker, the Commissioner of the Mac.
Upon the conclusion of the Western Michigan football game,
the Mid-American Conference in Western Michigan contacted the Big Ten office to seek clarification
regarding the replay review and the placement of time back on the game clock.
The Big Ten explained the ball touched a player who was out of bounds before the clock reached zeros,
resulting in one additional play being awarded.
The Big Ten subsequently provided video and audio over the replay,
which confirmed the explanation provided to us.
I commend Western Michigan for an outstanding effort and well-played game,
and I offer my congratulations to Michigan.
I also appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Big Ten office
and its prompt response in reviewing the play
and providing the requested clarification.
So you could not believe this,
but the commissioner of the Mac believes the Big Ten here.
So I don't know what else we can say,
but that's where everybody's at right now.
So just a wild, wild finish.
Like I'm still in shock.
I'm sure we'll make the list this week of the most shocking finishes in college football history.
And this is up there.
I don't mean to be a prisoner of the moment, but this is up there.
I will say there are a lot of people in the chat who, you know, think that Michigan got away with something.
or Michigan should have paid the consequence in the form of a loss.
And yes, they won the game.
But, you know, I don't think that it's over for them.
They've got a lot of work to do before, you know, next weekend.
They're playing Oklahoma next weekend.
So if they were to lost this game or should have lost this game or did lose this game,
they might have a long weekend six and a half days from now.
So we'll see how it goes.
We'll be tracking them, but they're probably going to fall in the rankings.
I think obviously the way that people view this team has changed dramatically this past two hours.
And who knows?
Maybe it was a fluke.
I don't think it was, but we'll have further breakdowns of Michigan.
Bryce Underwood's play.
We talked about it in the live video that we did right after the game.
Obviously, it had a terrible game.
95 yards passing against a Mac team going into the final drive.
Just not very good.
So, you know, we'll have a critical.
fumble late.
Yeah.
He got called for holding, which I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback called for
holding.
So that was something.
It's, yeah, there's a lot to break down about Michigan.
There's a lot to digest.
But this is just a while.
I can't get a pick right on our pick show, but I did get the most likely to upset, right?
Yes.
A game that was not an upset.
Let us go to Maden Rouge.
Holy mackerel. Lane Kiffin and LSU laid belt to ass against Clemson.
51 to 10. The touchdown for Clemson was the garbage of garbage time touchdowns.
The stadium was empty. The last time Tiger Stadium was that empty in the fourth quarter,
they were about to fire Brian Kelly so they could hire Lane Kiffin.
Ari, Lane Kiffin, in his halftime interview with Holly Rowe,
is running about to run off the field and says,
imagine if we had pro players.
What are they up?
31 to 3 at that point or 34 to 3.
They were destroying them.
This was a pathetic effort by Clemson,
but I don't think it's a,
this means Clemson's awful,
and LSU's just okay.
No, LSU's awesome.
I'm just telling you right now,
this is not a fluke.
LSU's awesome.
I remember last year when we went to Clemson for this matchup,
and it was a hard-fought game, and LSU won,
thinking, okay, that was a really high-level game,
or felt like a high-level game between two top-10 teams.
I don't want to, like, make that mistake again
by jumping to conclusions too early.
But, you know, I've spent a good portion of the off-season,
not really understanding why LSU was a team that ranked in the 10, 11, 12 range
on a lot of people's ballots.
I had them much higher.
Andy, they might be, as you put it, a real wagon,
like a real national championship contender right out of the gate.
And I wonder, which is what they paid for.
It is what they paid for, yeah.
It is.
It's what they went through the circus for.
It's what they paid the roster for.
It's what they paid Lane Kiffin for.
It's what they paid the buyout for before all this happened.
and you do get what you pay for sometimes.
But Lane Kiffin was out there and, you know, doing his thing.
Before the drive for the garbage time touchdown for Clemson,
they had zero rushing yards.
Zero.
Oh, God.
It was awful.
It was awful to watch.
The entire game, it felt like I was in a tooth cleaning appointment.
So, you know, if you would have asked us on Thursday when we were recording our final show
heading into the weekend, where do you think that when this weekend's over,
with, you know, Lane Kiffin will rank in the most pertinent or interesting stories to talk about.
And I think even four hours ago, I said, all right, we'll convene after the games.
We'll lead with Lane Kiffin because, of course we will.
Whatever happens, we'll lead with him.
But Andy, I think that Lane Kiffin, as interesting as he was and as good as LSU is,
is the third most interesting story that happened since the sun went down.
Yes.
You know, I here's the question.
Is Dabot the coach next year?
like is it am I too soon on this question no nope you can ask it the the amount of money is
astounding it's it's similar to the amount of money ls you had to pay brian kelly but dabo
i hate to say did this to himself he turned clemson into a national power and if you
expect to be a national power and you get paid to coach a national power you make 12 billion
a year, you'd better look like it.
They looked like they did not belong on the field with LSU.
They looked like they were in a completely different weight class.
Remember, this is a team that competed for national titles that went toe to toe with the
baddest of the bad, that beat Alabama twice in national title games, that beat Ohio
state in college football playoff games.
They looked pitiful.
I'm going to be honest with you.
I don't ask that question if they lose 34 to 20.
I don't ask that question if they lose 3417,
even in a lopsided 3417 type game.
You lose 51 to 10.
Take the score out of it, man.
That was like hard to watch.
Like I found myself feeling bad for Clemson fans.
That looks like you didn't know what you were walking into.
You didn't know what level of team you have to put on the field.
Yeah.
to make this work.
And you can say the games changed all you want.
He gets paid $12 million.
Figure it out.
Like, that's why they pay you.
You're good at this stuff, at recalling this stuff.
I think I have a general idea of the year.
When was the last time the Clemson football team was toe-to-to-to-competitive
with a legitimate national championship team on the field?
Are we going back four years?
Five years now, six years?
Was it 2020?
They made the playoff in 2020, right?
I think it might have been 2020.
Yeah.
We're in 2020, guys.
I mean, it's not like this is like a two-year slide.
And yes, they've won the ACC in times since 2020.
They made the playoff, the 12-team playoff in the time since when they won the ACC a few years ago.
but if I recall correctly, when they made the playoff last was also the year they got their ass kicked by Georgia in the opener.
They just happened to win the ACC that year.
So I'm not here saying that Clemson is completely cooked in the ACC race and there's no possible way that they're going to win it.
I don't think they will.
But even so, Clemson is not and has not been for a while compared to other ACC teams and how competitive they are in the league.
like they're not being compared to Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech in Cal.
They're being compared to Bama, Georgia, Ohio State in Indiana now.
Well, now LSU.
And now LSU.
And they are not and have not for years, for years been the same caliber of team.
And we've given a lot of chances before asking this question, although we theorized about timelines and stuff.
and you know you did send a screenshot
before we went recording that I think is interesting
I think was from our Clemson board
yeah from Tiger Illustrated
this is from their this is from their forum
so this is poker tiger
and this is a really
I think this is a very wise
and well thought out
way of looking at this
the price you pay for two national championships
and a dynasty run that very few programs
get the privilege of experiencing
is the guy who did that for you gets to write
his own ending. I said that when we hired him. He will be our Bobby Bowden. And that is clearly the
case for the good and the bad. And those who know your college football history, Bobby Bowden,
of course, one of the greatest coaches who ever lived, one of the most dominant runs you've ever
seen at Florida State. Remember, from 1987 to 2000, they won two national titles. They finished
in the top four of the AP poll every single year. But there's a reason Florida State people call
the first decade of the 2000s, the lost decade,
because he had lost his fastball.
They stopped being a national power.
And by the end, basically, they had to force him out.
They had to fire Bobby Bowden.
I remember being in Tallahassee that day and just thinking,
like, I can't believe they just fired Bobby Bowden,
but I'd watched the games the previous three, four years.
So I knew why they had to do it.
Yeah.
What makes this so confusing is that usually when a coach loses a fastball,
there's a clear and identifiable reason for it.
Or you can look at something and say, here's why or where he failed.
And I think that for a while, as the program slipped,
you could have pointed directly to the portal and the lack of usage of it
or the lack of adapting to it.
but last year
Clemson had
seven draft picks
or nine draft picks
sorry not seven
in the first four rounds
of the NFL draft
and they actually had
really good players
and they were coached poorly
and now it looks like
we're back to them
not having good enough players
somebody said it in the chat
and it was kind of an amusing comment
but it's kind of true
you know how Dabo likes to do
his Daboisms in the offseason
we're just a bunch of nobodies
you know like I even did the shoulder shrug
we're just a bunch of no buddies
he goes well maybe they are
I mean, like, who's on the field there that, like, because LSU invested, spent,
I don't want to affect any Texas tech fans.
They spent and bought really good players.
Invested is the word I like to use for everyone, not just LSU.
And they have top line NFL talents all over the place on the lines at the skill positions,
at the quarterback position.
They can run the ball now, Ari.
They can run the ball.
They can do that last year.
They can run the ball now.
somebody said that Sam Labbitt plays football like a squirrel who accidentally
storted Adderall runs.
And I was like, yeah, that's right.
I read that and I was laughing.
But Clemson was not physically equipped to exist on that.
We could play the same next weekend.
You made an interesting point to me off air the other day because remember who we had on
the show last week?
We got a lot of people on the show.
I don't remember who.
We had Tony Elliott, the coach at Virginia.
Oh, yeah, Tony Elliott.
an offensive coordinator.
I should have remembered that.
You said, Andy, you always say the beginning of the downfall was when Brent Venables got the Oklahoma job.
But let's remember, Tony Elliott got the Virginia job the same year that Brent Venables got the Oklahoma job.
When those two left, you can draw the line right there.
They've got an ACC title since then, but as everybody remembers, they backed into that one.
but because remember Syracuse beat Miami.
This is in 2024 to allow them into the ACC title game.
Venables get, you know, got a lot of the credit because he was the hot shot coordinator.
Wasn't he the first billion dollar coordinator in college football, if I remember correctly?
He went to a place that's already equipped to be as a head coach to win national championships.
He's not doing the Virginia route.
He went to Oklahoma and they expected CFP burst right away.
but as Virginia made the ACC championship last year and looked absolutely awesome in their opener last weekend in week zero,
what if we find out that Tony Elliott is an awesome, awesome coach who's a genius who's going to be playing for championships in five years?
Like, I just, Tony Elliott on our show said, we talked to them about, because he went to Virginia thinking,
I'm going to do this just like Davo did at Clemson, but he got to Virginia right as the world changed.
and he had to figure it out.
And he said, like, this is not what I planned.
I didn't think I'd be this transfer portal heavy.
But I am because that's what works.
That's how I win here.
And so what's your viewpoint or your hypothesis on what went wrong?
So if, like, you had to summarize where Dabo lost his fastball, where did he lose?
Brent Venables and Tony Elliott left.
Yeah.
I mean, that's a lot of brain power to lose it one time.
Yeah.
I think that's really where it starts.
So, and I believe they made internal hires on both, in both cases,
defense and offense.
And then they ended up firing those guys and hiring from outside.
Yeah.
So I just, it's sad.
Like, watching them get pulverized is sad because they were the elite.
of the elite.
I also think it's sad to see a coach who did some of the most remarkable things any coach
has ever done.
And certainly one of the most successful and brilliant coaches of my professional career
in childhood blending together get remembered this way.
Like there's the other thing about this too is that staying too long, you know, I think
maybe in the short years, the infancy of like your departure.
you're viewed for how it ended
and then people come back around
through remembering the good times.
But you want to see people who
you would consider putting on the Mount Rushmore
of your college coaches all time
go out with a bang, go out on top.
And I know most coaches don't get the benefit of that.
You know, not everybody gets to win a national championship
and go out on top.
Hell, Nick Sabin didn't even go out on top.
But he went out in a playoff.
I mean, that...
Yeah, no, I know.
He was closer than most get.
I just, if Davosweeney's tenure in Clemson is coming to an end, I don't love the way it did for him, because I think that he deserves better.
But also, when you get paid $12 million a year, there's not even second of your time or a single question on the grading rubric of how you're doing that gets taken for granted either.
You know, you accept those checks, you accept the responsibility.
and we've said that all the time about him.
So, you know, I don't know if you're in,
let's see how Clemson bounces back mode,
but even if Clemson goes on to win eight or nine games this year
and is semi-competitive in the ACC,
I still don't think that's what his job is.
His job is to be competitive on that field tonight,
and they are not.
And it wasn't even, they weren't competitive.
When was it over?
Like, in the middle of the first quarter?
Like, it was just.
So, Clinton intercepts a pass on the first possession
and they go kick a field goal.
When LSU just malls its way down the field
on the next position, that's when it was over.
Yeah.
It was over at 7.3.
Yeah.
Didn't feel competitive at all.
And I don't know about you.
Did you go back and watch the big, I mean, like,
the Michigan stuff was happening in the middle of the LSU games.
It was hard to, like, be totally locked in on that.
But I went back and watched during halftime and stuff.
Like, I went back and watched, and it wasn't pretty.
So.
It was bullied.
ball. I mean, LSU's offensive linemen were annihilating
Clemson's defensive front. Just covering, there's a touchdown
where Jordan Seton just erases a linebacker.
Richard's asking, why are you? Yeah, Richard in the chat. Why is it sad to see
Clemson lose? Why aren't you rooting for a new rain? This is crazy. This isn't the NBA.
Grow up. The NBA's had like seven champions in seven years, Richard. I don't
think you understand how that works. And they won the national championship.
like yeah they won a national title more recently than clemson also go back to the first half of
the show we were talking about what are we talking about it's not well no i just it's not sad to see them
lose it's sad you see them get pulverized that's and it's yeah if they lose who cares if they get
destroyed that's interesting yeah and it's about dabbo not clemson like it's okay when teams get
their ass kicked it's football i just i'm talking about dabbo and who he is yeah yeah yeah but
Lane
did what he's hired to do
because that roster is really good.
Yeah.
Cannot wait to see them play Ole Miss in two weeks.
What would they reckon he'll be?
Wait.
Don't know yet.
I want to see them against a team that can actually hang with them.
Young lines?
They actually has athletes like they have.
Yeah.
I don't know.
You're not that young on the lines.
Yeah.
They're not that young.
They're,
remember, this is a portal built team.
Their age spread is pretty good.
Yeah.
So I think they're going to be fascinating to watch,
but they really ran the ball well.
And I said it on the show that I thought LSU would be able to run the ball
if you follow your Lane Kiffin teams, that they do run effectively.
But, I mean, Ari, they were so good on the ground.
And like Dylan Jones, who didn't do that much at Wisconsin last year,
but he fits really well in this offense.
Yeah.
And I mean, the holes that they were opening for him were pretty nice, too.
But yeah, Dylan Jones, 23 carries for 113 yards, two TDs.
Sam Levitt running around, 12 carries, 113 yards, two TDs.
LSU finished with 58 carries for 309 yards and four TDs on the ground.
Like, that was just an absolute thumping.
Yeah.
LSU's got some big games this season.
We'll see if anybody can get to them.
But they're like number 11 in the polls right now.
I would expect them.
I don't know if I were, I'm not a voter,
but if I were an AP voter,
they would be jumping into the top five for me.
I don't know if you agree with that.
Yeah.
Oh, I think so.
All right.
Let's whip around the rest of the country.
We've spent 38 minutes on these two games.
We've got to talk about some other games.
It was not a great day for the most part.
for new coaches that were porting at least one side of the ball from their old place
or maybe two sides of the ball from their old place.
Eric Morris gets to Oklahoma State.
Forget everything we said the offseason because I was like,
these guys are going to be great.
They're going to be instantly good.
Nope.
They've now lost Tulsa twice in row for the first time since 1952.
Trey Lamb and the Golden Hurricane beat them 2410.
It was never close.
Drew Vestamaker and that offense were shut down the entire day.
So that didn't work.
And it's interesting because that's not even the move up.
Eric Morrison Company were at North Texas last year.
They were in the same conference as Tulsa.
Right.
So like there's no excuse for that.
And then Auburn winds up winning against Baylor.
But if you watched Alex Gullesh's interview after the game,
you know he was shocked.
Like, this didn't work.
What's going on?
Why is my offense not work?
Because I got to play Florida and Georgia and Alabama here a little bit.
And this ain't working.
Yeah.
You know, it is kind of interesting because, you know,
maybe we'll find out in a month that Baylor got much better.
But Auburn was the best bad team in college football last year.
And they looked physically more advanced than Baylor did.
a year ago. Again, teams change a lot in a year. Obviously, Auburn's a very different team.
But the thing that I was most taken back by when watching the game was that Auburn didn't really
feel as a physically superior, you know, across the board in terms of toughness and movability.
Byron Brown, who has always looked fast, even when they played SEC, like when they were
USF, they played Alabama, they played Florida. Byron Brown looked fast in those games against those
players.
Yeah.
He was getting run down by Baylor players today.
Now, when it counted, he had a touchdown run at the end where he did make a move.
He did get away.
But for the most part, he didn't look like he was as fast as there was no bully ball.
There was no bully ball.
Yeah.
So one place it did work, though, state college Pennsylvania.
Yep.
Matt Campbell and company win 45 to nothing against Marshall.
They looked awesome.
You know, we've been jokingly calling them the Penn State Cyclones,
and they did bring a lot of people from Iowa State,
but they look like that they'd all been playing together forever.
Now, granted, Marshall may not be that good,
but you saw in other places,
you saw Oregon struggle against Boise State and when you saw Oklahoma State lose.
You saw Michigan.
almost loser, well, lose, depending on how you feel about the clock, Matt Campbell did not
leave any doubt.
Yeah.
You know, I don't know why teams don't get credit for blowing out teams when they're much better.
I know Saturday was kind of the who did they play, but who did they play day, right?
Anytime I complimented anybody all day.
It's, who are they playing?
But it's a lot worse to get, to get roped into a game by a team that you're,
you should be physically superior to.
Like,
you're supposed to blow these teams out.
And Penn State did,
like they understood the assignment.
They did exactly what they're supposed to do.
Yeah, Rocco Beckett had 271 yards and four touchdown passes
in his Penn State debut.
Was never a game for a second.
Penn State was clearly superior to an overmatched opponent.
And they did what they're supposed to do to an overmatched opponent,
which is kick their ass.
It's good.
Yes.
Yes.
And now the guy that Penn State fired,
he's got a new job,
James Franklin.
He did the same thing at Virginia Tech, played an overmatched opponent, beat the hell out of the
overmatched opponent.
Virginia Tech played VMI.
They won 73 to 3.
So great debut for him.
While we're on the subject of nice debuts, let's go through a couple other nice debuts,
one in Gainesville, Florida.
John Sumral, his first game for Florida.
They went 66 to 21 against FAU.
Ari, the offense was clicking immediately, immediately.
Like they intercepted a pass inside their own 10-yard line
and marched over 90 yards right away.
And Jaden Ball was great.
Aaron Philo was excellent.
Bernal Brown.
The third was great.
So that is as smooth as a Florida offensive look since Stan Mullen was there.
Yeah.
I'm sure the streets have.
Gainesville or buzzing tonight.
Your property value just went up, I think, 2%.
You know, you're feeling pretty good about yourself.
Maybe.
And by the way, John Summerall continues to hold his title as the best swagged out coach in college football.
That shirt he was wearing.
You want that hat?
I want that hat.
Sure was a throwback.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Just a, just a sharp looking man and getting things done.
Aaron Philo, 16 for 21, three touchdowns and 275 yards.
And Jaden Boss struck Heisman pose.
Do you think too many people are doing it?
Like too many people are doing it?
I think you should stop encouraging everybody.
Yeah, is it my fault?
Like, maybe.
I think we,
you were going to take credit for Jeremiah Smith doing it,
so I should,
I should probably blame you for Jaden Ball doing it too.
Yeah.
Man, but Florida, good for you.
And I've been waiting a long time for that.
And obviously beating in-state P-G-6 opponents
shouldn't have been taken for granted.
And it certainly wasn't in the opener,
winning by 45 points.
Yeah.
Will Stein, great debut at Kentucky.
They're playing a Youngstown State, an FCS team.
They went 45 to 13.
Elsewhere, non-debut edition in the SEC.
We got to talk about Camario Taylor at Mississippi State.
Yeah.
Holy crap.
That's a jets on them, huh?
And we said last year when they put him in toward the end of the season,
we're like, this guy seems pretty exciting.
He looks like he could be fun going forward.
There's a play today where he steps up in the pocket.
And he actually didn't have a ton of room to throw.
There was some pressure coming at him.
And he just kind of flicks his wrist and throws a perfect strike,
50 yards through the air that hits the receiver in stride.
It was incredible.
Yeah, 62 to 13 over UL Monroe.
I don't know if Mississippi State is back,
but they had a pretty exciting performance from their quarterback.
And I know people were hyping them up in the offseason,
354 yards passing for four touchdowns and 59 yards.
Six carries for 59 yards and a TD on the ground too.
Yeah.
I'm excited to see this guy.
They play Minnesota in a little bit.
That's going to be a fun one.
Yeah.
That's going to be the narrative bowl.
The narrative bowl.
Is that the only other than the two giant SEC Big Ten games next week with
Ohio State and Texas and Oklahoma and Michigan, that's the one other.
Yeah, I don't know that there's another non-conference matchup.
I think there's only three this year.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that'll be fun.
But yeah, this is going to be a really fun year.
We're in the midst of a really fun game right now.
This Cal UCLA game is awesome.
UCLA took leave.
Yeah, Cal came back.
It's 24 all in the fourth quarter.
It looked like UCLA was going to run away there at the,
toward the end of the second quarter,
and then Cal intercepts the past.
JKS brings them down, and it becomes a very close game right before the half.
And so this has been fun, which we thought it.
would be, and that's the one where the spread was as close to a pickum as you're going to get.
But, Ari, I don't know.
What result surprised you the most today?
Michigan, Western Michigan?
Yeah.
Well, I'm sorry.
Accepting the one that left us in a complete state of shock.
Yeah.
Well, what's the next?
What's number two?
I don't know if anything absolutely shocked me.
I think the Oregon Boise game was pretty shocking in the sense that I thought that Oregon
would win much more comfortable, more comfortably than they did.
In fact, there was actually a realistic shot that they could have lost there in that game
if you were watching it.
Yeah.
I really liked what I saw it, a phazon Brandon today.
We didn't talk about that yet.
Oh, with Tennessee.
We hadn't got to talk about him yet.
He did look good against Furman.
Yeah, and there was a fun stat, and River pointed it out because I think he wanted us
to promote Tennessee because.
he's a ball head for life.
He's a ball for life. Yeah. But apparently he's the first
quarterback to throw for three
touchdown passes and rush for two touchdown
passes in their first start in the SEC since
Cam Newton did it in 2010.
And I said could he be 70%
Cam Newton? Oh boy.
Oh, boy.
He tied a Cam Newton record.
No, you can't compare people to Cam Newton.
You just Tennessee was right.
I'm not. I know. No one is Cam Newton.
especially not people who play like him.
But Tennessee was an all-time vibes place today.
And I know that we like to talk about the actual games.
I will always love you.
Yeah, the way that they honored Dolly Parton today
and the hype video was like the coolest hype video I've ever seen.
Like Tennessee really did a good job of playing up their game day atmosphere today.
And their five-star freshman quarterback went out there.
Oh, no. J.K.S. threw a ball that was receiver couldn't hang on to.
and it landed in the arms of a UCLADB.
This game is going to get wild.
Dude, when you close your eyes,
you can just look at it and just,
you're watching the PAC 12 right now.
It's one of the morning central time.
It's Pact 12 after dark.
Yeah.
This is what we used to do.
We would do the show and watch Pax 12 after dark.
We're doing it.
Nothing's changed.
Sorry, I derailed your phase on Brandon.
No, but no, I just thought that like the Tennessee
over 100,000 people,
singing I'll always love you
and I don't know shit about European soccer
and their pageantry so I could be wrong about this
but scenes like that
are just like the only thing that you'll
ever see that is only in college football
producer river pop up what's
what's the plan is there going to be a dolly song
between the third and fourth quarter forever now in Tennessee
so the I will always love you
the way I understood was I could just a tribute
in the first quarter
specialty video and then the fourth
quarter was my Tennessee
Mountain home that replaces Morgan
Wallen's the way I talk.
Oh, thank you. Now,
I'm not a giant Morgan Wallin
fan. I actually do enjoy the way I talk.
That's one of my things. I think that you're a Morgan Waller
or not. I think you hate him.
But I like that song. I've always
liked that song. But my Tennessee Mountain
home is a much better one. But here's
I'm going to get Danny White, if you're listening,
that's the Tennessee AD. I'm going to tell you right now,
make it I will always love you.
Do I will
always love you between the third and fourth quarters.
Like when Scott Strickland, the Florida athletic director after Tom Petty died, he incorporated
them playing, I Won't Back Down.
Petty was a Gainesville native.
And Florida already had a song between the third and fourth quarters.
It's called We Are the Boys of All Florida.
Now they just sing, we are the boys, and then they roll into I Won't Back Down.
But it is, like the way they do it, the production of it is magical, especially at night.
And I'm telling you, my Tennessee Mountain home obviously fits the vibe very well.
But I got chills listening to that stadium saying, I will always love you.
Like, if they did that between the third and the fourth quarter of a night game against Alabama that's tied, there's not a dry eye in the house.
Like that place is going.
It's just shaking to the rafters.
Yeah.
And of course, I'll always love you.
Could just be Tennessee fans honoring Dolly, but also talking to their team that
they'll always love.
I mean, it's an appropriate thing.
Nobody loves their team as much as them.
In fact, they probably love them a little too much.
But yeah, that's the best part.
Kind of stockery.
I don't know.
But Andy, so usually on Saturday nights moving into the season, I will, by the time
we are recording, we'll have a top 10 every week.
Yeah.
opting not to do that this week.
I will publish it on Sunday night because we've got games, funny enough tomorrow.
Can I ask you a question, though?
Sure.
I know you're not putting the teams in order because we need to watch Notre Dame play
and we watch Ole Miss and Little bit of play.
But where's Indiana going to be generally?
Probably in the five to seven range, if I had to guess.
They're still really freaking good.
No, I know.
So the reason why I brought this up is because I want you to help me workshop.
Yeah, because we didn't even talk about Texas.
Arch Manning was throwing darts out there.
Cam Coleman had a touchdown.
Texas looked fantastic.
LSU looked fantastic.
Obviously, Miami's offense looked fantastic on Friday night.
Ohio State 1, 56 to 3.
Georgia 1-66-63 to 3.
In Gunner Stockton, I think, started some crazy, you know, 15 to 16 for 202 yards and
three touchdowns.
Indiana did what Indiana did.
You know, A&M 150 to nothing.
who was the most impressive team to you this weekend?
Like, of all the games you watched,
what,
because like, honestly,
LSU,
you don't know if it's recency bias.
It's LSU, right?
Yeah, LSU.
Yeah.
And I know,
but I don't want people to be like,
oh, they beat Clemson,
Clemson sucks,
you're being overreactive.
I actually just thought they looked the best.
Clemson still has decent players.
Like, Clemson has more NFL players
than the version of North Texas that played against Indiana,
or probably more than Boise State.
I don't know.
though.
Boise State played really well, and they've kept most of their roster together.
Is it insane to put LSU number one?
You do whatever you want.
I know.
I just, I'm week one with you, man.
Well, no, here's the thing.
I'm a firm believer in radically just changing everything week one, week two, week three.
Because like, we had a dummy in the chats.
We were talking about Indiana, and you said five to seven ranges.
And he's like, so they're going to drop a spot?
Drop a spot from what?
Yeah.
Everybody's played now.
So we're going to have,
we're going to rank them based on what we've seen.
Would you like them to,
would you like us to keep ranking based on the guesses?
Or do you like us to use the evidence on the field?
Yeah.
I mean,
they were great.
And also,
how far as Indiana come were,
if you put them at number five,
you're an asshole.
I mean, they're good.
I mean,
I just,
for sure.
I was,
of all the games I watched today,
which was all of them,
the team that blew me away the most
was LSU.
Yes. Yes.
So I think I'm going to do...
I would agree with that.
But there were a lot of impressive ones.
There were some less impressive ones.
Like Nebraska is an interesting one.
We're not talking about rankings anymore.
We're not talking about just...
We've segues.
Interesting results.
Yeah.
Because Nebraska,
really struggled with Ohio for a while.
Yeah.
But I gotta say,
the way they turned it on
in the fourth quarter?
Yep.
I was impressed.
Yeah. And being in the Big Ten and beating
a Mac team, no guarantee, man.
You saw that.
Jamal Rule 15 carries
for 122 yards and two TDs.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I like Jamal Rule.
He runs hard.
He hits the whole.
A little jump cut and go.
Like he's going to be fun to watch.
But yeah, I thought that was an interesting game because in the third quarter,
you're very much doubting whether Nebraska is going to beat this Mac team.
Yeah, little behind the scenes, guys, like we were circling the wagons at the Andy
and Arion 3 with a producer about maybe getting a studio set up for the live on this game
in the middle of it.
So, you know, Nebraska obviously didn't come close to losing, but, you know, the first half,
was not pretty, and they turned it on.
So I'm trying to think of other things because these days are 15.
Oh, hey, I got one.
Producer River pointed this out to me.
You know who did hammer a Mac opponent,
a directional Michigan school.
The New Mexico Lobos, our guy Jason Eck, 38 to 7 in their opener tonight.
New Mexico, the team that one of the co-favorits in the Mountain West,
UNLV is probably the other one.
And you saw UNLV lose to Memphis.
Memphis last week.
But, yeah, 387 in the Lobos season opener.
So they were outstanding.
But, Ari, we got games tomorrow.
So we got the Apple Cup early, Washington State, Washington.
Oh, JKS just threw another pick.
Yes, JKS threw a pick on the last drive,
and it turned into a long UCLA touchdown ago of 3124,
and JKS threw a second pick now with seven minutes remaining in the game.
Yeah, yeah.
12 after dark, does not disappoint.
Okay, we're talking about tomorrow's games.
Apple Cup, which will be pack 12 in the light.
That's in the afternoon.
And then two games at night,
Ole Miss Louisville from Nashville,
Notre Dame, Wisconsin, from Green Bay from Lambeau Field.
I'm excited about Ole Miss Louisville.
I want to see Ole Miss play again.
You know, the last time we saw them was in the playoffs
and the semi-final against Miami,
Trinidad Shambliss and Kiwan.
Lacey of running it back.
We've seen Lane now.
Now we want to see the other part of this divorce.
Like, did Ole Miss get its revenge bod?
Yeah.
The sweaty yoga bod.
You know, the sweaty, like dripping yoga bod, that lane kept in head.
That's more lane.
But they'll be playing in Louisville, which we trust Jeff Brom.
Lots of transfers on this team.
But Isaac Brown's back to run the ball.
Cleve Lubin's back to rush the passer.
They have some very good players in this team.
And again, we trust Jeff Brom.
So that's going to be a fun one.
And then I'm excited to see Notre Dame.
We have not seen Notre Dame play since the Stanford game,
the final game of the regular season last year,
because they skipped the bowl game.
They obviously missed the playoff.
I got a feeling,
I don't think Notre Dame will try to make any points like LSU did tonight,
but they also may be capable of that.
Yeah.
they also might.
So I want to, I was, maybe this is an off air conversation, but we're best friends and it's one in the morning, two in the morning, your time.
I do want to workshop a segment and I don't know if it should be on Saturday night or if it should be on the weekdays or if we should do it at all.
But if you are not a person like you and me who spends all day watching the games and also reading Twitter, you are missing out on a lot of really funny tweets.
and a lot of people come up with really funny things.
And I put a few aside,
and I think that we should think about maybe sharing some of them.
And I don't know if you're, you know,
just giving people full credit for what they come up with.
Oh, yeah, the best tweets of the,
the best tweets of the Saturday.
Can I just read one from PFT commenter that has had me dying?
He tweeted after the Michigan game.
That was the worst incident involving a timer in Michigan history
and Ted Kaczynski went there.
Like, is there a segment where you just,
and I don't know that's mildly inappropriate,
but like,
I believe I'm going to be on his show this week.
So I will,
I mean,
I don't know,
we're all adults here.
Can we all laugh together?
I mean,
I just,
there's so many funny things like that.
Oh,
I feel like we should share.
I'm going to try to find the one I sent you from Raj.
Raj is one of the funniest Michigan fans on the internet.
Yeah.
And I want to find it and do it justice so I don't butcher.
it, but I do remember the gist of it in case I can't.
Here we go.
Connor Stallion's walking out of the replay review booth with a limp that slowly transforms
into a normal gate.
I don't want to spoil one of the greatest movies of all time, but if you know, you know,
if you've ever heard a barbershop quartet from Skokie, Illinois, then you know.
If you know who verbal Kent is, if you know who Kaiser Sosei is, then you know.
you know.
But anyway, we'll talk about it this week.
Let us know if you're watching it tonight, if you're a usual Sussex fan, but also tell us
if you like this idea and then River, we can send them and he can post them so you can
read them.
But like there is so much funny stuff that happens during the day.
And I think watching college football while looking at Twitter is, like Twitter is the
cigarette to the beer.
Like it really enhances the experience.
Speaking of funny, speaking of funny.
Yeah.
We have some very funny listeners, viewers.
Yes.
And I want to give them an opportunity to be on the show, to contribute to the show.
Obviously, we love when you send us your dear Andy and dear Ari questions.
But now we've got a new segment.
This is going to come out every Tuesday.
We haven't figured out a name yet.
We're workshopping it.
Hotline, bling, probably not, but it's a candidate.
but 615378-8-8-7-9.
That's 615-378-88-8-8-7-9.
Give us a call, leave us a message.
We've already got a few stored up for Tuesday from today's games.
But tell us how you're feeling about your team right now.
Because I want the emotion to be as raw as possible.
I prefer it right after the game.
But obviously, we're just starting with this.
We've got to get everybody on board.
and get the phone number out to everybody.
So hit us up.
615-378-8-8-7-9.
We will play the best ones on Tuesday.
Like I said, we've already got a couple bangers.
It's going to be so much fun.
But Ari, we got games tomorrow.
I am going to SMU at Florida State on Monday.
We got a pick show on Monday.
We are here in the most fun time of the year.
Nico I.M. Ali-Ava just went down with what,
look to be like a semi-serious injury.
So stay tuned.
He's not in the game anymore right now.
Maddeni-Ovich came in to replace him, right?
Yeah.
He goes crap.
He go into the tent, not putting a lot of weight on his legs.
Oh, my gosh.
Not good.
Yeah.
And they're up by seven and they're deep in Cal territory.
So it looks like as long as they don't turn it over, maybe kick a field goal,
they'll still escape with the win.
But, you know, we'll have you an update hopefully for you guys when we go live
the games tomorrow night at the very earliest.
Yeah. Well, we will
be talking to you tomorrow after
the games. This is so
much fun. Today has been a joy.
I forgot how much
fun these days are. Are you in game
shape? How's your governor? How are you feeling
right now? You tired?
Never.
It's like Kevin Gates.
I got six jobs. I don't get tired.
I'm exhausted. We got
games tomorrow and
Monday. I'll talk to you then.
Thank you.
