On today is Annie Narion 3 presented by BetMGM.
It's Mega Board Wednesday.
We dive deep into the message boards throughout the On3 network.
We start at Michigan with a post about Michigan's offense.
Maybe wasn't as bad as you thought watching the Northwestern game.
And statistically, probably true.
Some huge mistakes that need to be cleaned up.
But maybe the sky is not falling for the Wolverines.
Maybe the Wolverines are in a better chance to maybe pull off a crazy two-game win streak.
We shall see.
We then go to Alabama, where all the pressure is on the Iron Bowl, especially after the college football playoff ranking reveal the tide came in at number 10.
They were below Notre Dame, and boy, people are going nuts about that, understandably so because of the quality of Alabama's wins relative to the quality of Notre Dame's win.
wins. So we'll talk about that and also how much pressure is on Kalin DeBoer to win the Iron Bowl next week, because that is sort of the key to everything at this point. We will then go to the Bingle Tiger, our LSU site, the Ponderosa Messrs. Worthy coaching rumors mega thread, which I believe is at 235 pages now. We're just going to have some fun with this one. This is Lane Kiffin is one of the people that LSU is pursuing.
We talked a lot about Lane yesterday.
We'll talk a little bit more about Lane,
but also what else is going on in the LSU coaching search.
They're having the most fun on their message board.
Let's just put it that way.
Also, we asked the drink question at Missouri.
Because Eli Drinkwitz's name has come up in a lot of these coaching searches,
and I think we have not talked about that enough.
So we need to talk about the drink question.
So we'll talk about it.

Welcome to Annie and Ari on 3 presented by BetMGM.
It's a mega board Wednesday.
We dive deep into the message boards across the On3 network.
And Ari, there's a lot going.
going on on the boards. We got coaching searches. We got playoff runs. We got playoff ranking
angst. We've got coaches under pressure. Coaches who might be getting poached. You name it.
Yeah, we are in the throes of college football season, man. We've got so much to discuss. We've
got coaching carousel. We've got playoff committee. We have a committee chair who is also doing a
coaching search. Like, we are back, baby. Like, oh, yeah.
we are back um yeah no this is the best time of year andy i love the holidays i love when the weather
changes and i love debating uh people about college football stuff so let's get into it well let's
start at the wolverine that's our michigan site and chris ballast who runs the wolverine had a very
interesting post and he posted it on the the fort which is their their big message board and basically
what he's saying is maybe it wasn't as bad
as it looked against Northwestern.
And there were naturally a few kind of sarcastic responses.
Like, did Sharon Moore pay you to post this?
But when you look into the numbers of that game,
it actually wasn't as bad other than some just crippling,
crushing mistakes that Michigan was making.
And I think that's the thing that if they can clean up,
then suddenly you've got a very different situation.
And, you know, we talked about the Maryland game this week as a potential upset.
And I don't know, if they play the way they did minus a few of the mistakes.
If they play the same game, played against Northwestern, minus a few of the mistakes,
they're going to roll Maryland.
But what's the general premise of this?
Is it just, you know, they turn the ball over a lot?
I mean, because actually when you zoom out and you see five turnovers and losing the turnover margin,
five nothing, and then scoring 24 points, that means that they probably should have scored somewhere in the 40s.
They should have.
And some of this bad choices by Bryce Underwood, who's a freshman.
But obviously, I'm not talking about this in context of the Maryland game, though they do need to win the Maryland game.
I'm talking about this in the context of the game next week.
And Sharon Moore made sure he didn't say anything about the game next week and pointed out, hey, we're not talking about Ohio State.
We're only focusing on Maryland.
I get it.
But I do a podcast.
I don't coach football.
we're going to talk about the Michigan Ohio State game because if Michigan cleans up some of this stuff, they're going to beat Maryland and then you ask the question, are they capable of beating Ohio State?
Yeah, I mean, here's the thing about the analysis of the Ohio State game, Andy.
Obviously, you know, you want them to be playing as sharp and as good as they possibly can, especially offensively.
but, like, last year, they beat Ohio State as a team that was unable to complete a forward pass.
So, like, I also feel like some of the analysis and the breakdown of whether they can beat Ohio State is between the years as much it is about what happens on the field between the lines.
And I don't know if Ohio State will be freed from the mental gymnastics that they've been, you know, putting themselves through for that game as a result of winning the national title last year and Ryan Day, not having.
security guards around his house 24-7, like I wonder if that'll give them the confidence that
they need. But in terms of, you know, Michigan and Ohio State this year with the defense
that Ohio State's trotting out on the field every single day, like, if Michigan's going to win,
I think it's going to be much more about Ohio State's mental mindset more than it is
even about like what tactical X's and O's things you can break down. So we'll see.
But can I point out something that happened in the Northwestern game, Michigan, offensively,
a positive. Sure, I'd love to hear it. Andrew Marsh, the freshman receiver. So he's the one who
made the diving catch on 3rd and 10 on the last drive. That was one of 12 catches he made for
189 yards in that game. What have we been talking about all year with relation to Michigan?
If they just have a receiver step forward or two, all of a sudden, this looks very different.
maybe Andrew Marsh is that guy.
He's a freshman.
You know, he's had a big game against USC as well.
So they didn't play well in that game, but he did.
He played great in that game.
He had eight catches for 138 yards and a touchdown.
It hasn't been every game.
The only times he's gone over 100 yards are the USC game in the Northwestern game.
But could it be that Bryce Underwood's found his guy?
And now that passing game suddenly feel.
is a little more dynamic.
I mean, that catch he made on the sideline where he barely got his toes in, it was not the
greatest of throws.
Michigan may have a dude at receiver now.
Yeah, well, Michigan that helps.
Got Marsh out of Texas, and he was a top 160 player in the country last year.
So, like, you have the athletic ability.
so like you know players jump like malachi tony wasn't a five-star player like i mean
this is crazy change yeah size and projections i think are part of it but you know they
you don't need to be somebody that you know had a massive ceremony on ESPN to be a impact player
so i mean 12 receptions and then making the play when it matters the most i think is a good
indication of that and you know i think that's also really important for their future andy
because as we go into next year brys underwood with an entire year of you know developing and playing
under his belt, like Michigan's duty as a program is to break out the NIL checks and we'll
bring in some playmakers for them. That's how you take the next step. So, you know, the fact that
Michigan is in this position right now, one went away from hosting Ohio State with a playoff
spot, you know, ahead of it. You know, I think there's a good place for Sharon Moore to be,
you know, as a coach considering some of the conversations driving a month ago. But, you know,
and I actually do think they could be in Ohio State. I think of all the teams on Ohio State schedule,
has the best chance it's at home you know they have one four in a row ohio state and then and they
usually play close games like that it's going to be freezing out my dad already sent me the forecast
because he's a weather person too saying that it's going to be 30 with 15 mile an hour winds that
day and i'm going to be flying from las Vegas so i've got a pack uh very interestingly uh warm weather
and cold weather back-to-back days but yeah i think michigan could win um and i i'm sure that northwest
was more of a clunker, a turnover-ridden game that they wound up winning more so than it is
like an indication of who they are. That said, I still think that Michigan is exactly like
where they're ranked. I think they're in between a 15 and 30 team. I don't know that they're a top
15 team, but it won't matter if they show up in Ann Arbor that day and get another win against
the team that, you know, most people don't think they can beat. Absolutely. I am very excited
to see this Michigan, Ohio State game.
Don't screw this up, Michigan.
Don't go to Maryland to lose this thing.
Don't screw it up.
You were making progress.
The thing about Michigan that we need to acknowledge,
and you mentioned this earlier,
they could not throw a forward pass last year.
They can do it this year.
Their offense is quite a bit better this year than last year.
their defense might not be as good but it is still capable
this is a better team
whether it's a playoff team is up to them
they they're going to have to make that happen themselves
but I thought that was really interesting
what Chris Ballas said because the negativity was pretty overwhelming
after the Northwestern game because when you watch it it's just frustrating
because it's just mistake mistake mistake mistake
but you realize that if you clean up
even a little bit of that
it looks completely
different. Yep, I'm with you 100%.
Honestly, I've been stoked about this game
for three weeks now. Ever since we decided to go,
I couldn't be more excited to go.
And it's a revelatory thing
for Ohio State, too, because they've had a pretty
easy walk in Central Park
in a fall day of a season.
I think they're probably happy to get a challenge.
Because they got a bunch of dudes on their team. I don't think they
like just rolling over everybody. I think they want to
want to test themselves. I think they want to roll over Michigan too, but I think they want
to test. Ohio State fans, you want to take something from them. Like, it's not just Michigan
trying to, you know, make the playoff. If Ohio State's going to get off the, you know, off the
Schneide and get a win over Michigan for the first time since before COVID, don't you want to
do it by taking something from them on their own field, which is their postseason life? Like,
I mean, like, that's what, it's not just about Michigan and whether they can keep the curse going over
Ryan Day. It's the other way, too. That's what makes the rivalry great. Like, I think if you're an Ohio
State fan, you should be rooting for Michigan to beat Maryland on Saturday because, you know,
you want the win. You want Michigan to feel they are as good as possible because at the end of the
year, if you win, you don't want to hear what we sucked this year. Like, you want to, you want to take
something from them. So like that, that is another element of this. Oh, yeah. No, it's much more
satisfying if Ohio State can break the streak with Michigan's trying to make the playoff. It's
immensely satisfying for Michigan
if they can make the playoff by
beating Ohio State. And then hopefully see them again.
Yeah.
You know the year that
Michigan beat Ohio State, that was
2022, I believe,
and both went still.
Ohio State played Georgia.
And Ohio State lost to Georgia in the
Peace Bowl and Michigan lost at CCU. I was
dying. I wanted
more than anything for them to play again in the play
off. I would love to see it.
Well, and they would have played the national title game, which would have been incredible.
Yeah, I thought they should have matched them up in the first round, but yeah, that would have been great.
Well, we'll find out what Michigan does.
Can they clean it up?
I think Maryland will be a good test for them, and we'll see where it goes from there.
But, yes, 13 and a half point spread for Michigan.
You're not even worth it.
Who cares if you cover the spread?
Just win the damn game.
That's what you got to do.
So let us move to our next thread.

Ari, let us move to Bama Online.
That is our Alabama site.
the BOL roundtable.
Rainbow Rising 76 posted this this morning.
It was very funny because the reactions were, as you might predict.
So the headline is,
DeBore is absolutely immense pressure to beat Auburn.
And then Rainbow Rising 76 writes,
in the same circumstances at Oklahoma last year,
he failed miserably.
This is year two.
He has to win this one and make the playoff.
the threads up to five pages now and it's all various versions of well yeah
duh yeah but yes yeah yeah um it's a rivalry game and your playoff life on on the line
that's the and yeah your place in the playoff ranking is weird that's we did not talk
about this enough on the show last night so if you're wondering why we haven't been
just talking about the playoff rankings, we did a whole show on that last night.
And you can find that on the YouTube feed.
You can also find that on your podcast feed.
But Alabama came in at number 10 behind Notre Dame, obviously behind Oklahoma, because
they lost Oklahoma, behind Oregon.
The behind Notre Dame part is what seems to bother everybody because they both have two
losses.
Alabama's wins are significantly better than Notre Dame's wins.
Like Alabama has beaten Georgia
That is the best win in the country right now
Yet they are behind Notre Dame
Which has the same number of losses
Notre Dame is the most misranked team in the entire thing
Like all problems lead back to Notre Dame
So like
I didn't want to rail on them about Miami last night
Because we talked a lot about it
But like this is every bit as egregious as that
Like you know
Except you don't have the head
head-to-head, which makes it more frustrating. I think that when you have the head-to-head
result, that doesn't matter. That makes it more frustrating for people who are just assuming
common sense will prevail. And it's like, we don't need to compare their resumes. We compared
the teams when it was aired on national television. That's what makes it more frustrating and more
popular to talk about. Alabama has the same record as Notre Dame. And they have four wins
over current top 25 teams and owned the single best win in the sport this year. And Notre Dame
beat number 15 USC and their losses are better.
So this leads me, and I wrote a column about this,
you know, four puzzling decisions and explanations from the CFP committee
that, you know, I slept on last night, woke up this morning and wrote this.
But who you lost to seems to matter more this year than who you beat, period.
And Alabama has the worst loss of any of the teams in the top 10, right?
Do we agree to that?
I would think so, but I'm going to get to that because there's something else that's
It's confusing. Oregon is getting credit for beating Penn State because Penn State was good when they beat them.
So then does Penn State was never good at the time before the wheels fell off.
That's, I'm telling you, it makes no sense, but it was set on the call last night.
I don't know if you got to that part.
Yeah, I know, but that's, it's complete bullshit.
Like, I'm sorry.
And I realize, if Oregon gets credit for beating Penn State, then does the Miami get credit for beating Florida, Florida State, USF?
Does Georgia Tech still get credit for beating Clems?
Florida was never good either.
But they've had essentially the same season as Penn State.
Right.
So that's nonsense.
So anyway, here's the quote about Alabama, getting back to Bama.
I think Nicole Auerbeck asked this question in relation to the, you know, Alabama's ranking behind Notre Dame.
And here's the answer.
When you look at how we have these teams ranked right now, you've got three undefeated teams at number one, number two, and number three.
You have four, one loss teams at four through seven.
Then you have that grouping of three really good eight and two teams.
Then you start comparing Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama.
As we talked about, obviously, the head-to-head Oklahoma gets that over Alabama.
Is that obvious, by the way?
I'm not sure what's so obvious about the head-to-head thing.
That's not as obvious.
You don't have Miami over Notre Dame.
So, yeah, okay.
The rest of the quote is, as we talked about, obviously, the head-to-head Oklahoma gets over Alabama.
Then you start to have comparable losses, Notre Dame against Miami and Texas A&N.
and then Oklahoma for Alabama,
and then, of course, that Florida State game.
Comparable losses outweighed who the teams beat.
It's right there in plain English.
Like, it's right there.
He said it.
So, like, I don't know what-
Quality losses, baby.
But how are quality losses more important than three additional top 25 wins?
They're not.
But there's still more wins even to cancel out those losses.
They're not more important.
It makes no sense.
It makes zero.
sense. I think there's going to be a reckoning here as Miami creeps up closer and they have to
compare them. And then you're going to have to compare Miami to Alabama and there's no comparison
there. So, yeah, it's going to get interesting. And that's Alabama, I went on the,
I went on the next round live in Alabama on Wednesday. And they were asking me about different
scenarios. And like, they're freaking out, not the host of the show, but they're, their listeners,
the fans, they are freaking out because they think and are worried because of where Alabama
landed here that even if Alabama wins the Iron Bowl, there's a chance Alabama doesn't make
the playoff. I think that's preposterous. If Alabama wins the Iron Bowl, they're in the
playoff, even if they go to the SEC championship game and lose. But remember, if Alabama wins
the Iron Bowl, they're also in the SEC championship game. I think that's a situation where it can only
help them because I don't think they're going to penalize the SEC championship or Big Ten
championship loser ever, like I don't think it's ever going to happen.
Alabama is two wins away, one of which over Eastern Illinois of me in the playoff.
Like that's preposterous.
You're right, Andy.
And the reason why I think part of the attention on Alabama wasn't given last night is
because Alabama also controls its own destiny and Miami doesn't.
Right.
Even though Miami is, I mean, Alabama is ranked wrongly behind Notre Dame, they have the control to rectify that.
It's the teams that shouldn't be ranked behind teams that are ranked behind teams that can't do anything to rectify it other than hope that the committee comes to its senses.
That caused me to get angry.
So, but yes, that to me is a wild, wild result.
And Alabama fans have every right to be upset about it.
Okay, let's, let's rank Alabama's best five wins and Notre Dame's best five wins.
Alabama's best win is at Georgia.
That is the best win that any team in the country has all season, okay?
Which I think should put you as the highest ranked two lost team, but go ahead.
Yes.
The next best win would be Vanderbilt, then Tennessee and Missouri, and then I guess LSU, but that is not particularly great.
Yeah. I mean, the fifth one really drops off.
So Notre Dame's best wins.
USC is clearly the best win.
Navy, too.
Second best win is Navy.
Yep.
I think the third best win is Pittsburgh.
Yep.
Fourth best win is Boise State or NC State.
Yeah.
And the fifth best is Arkansas, which sucks.
yeah yeah okay yeah this is not even a comparison
Notre Dame is currently getting more credit for close losses than Miami is for their best
win yeah Notre Dame is getting more credit for losing to Miami than Miami is getting credit
for beating Notre Dame yes that is insane I'm telling you this right now I don't know
if Miami is going to go 10 and 2 I've got the sneaky suspicion
having watched Miami football for 20 years
that they're going to trip up against Pitt.
But if they go 10 and 2,
they will be in the playoff.
They will be.
Because there's no way that if they're not,
it would be the biggest miscarriage of justice
of the College Football Playoff Committee
in the history of its existence.
And then a lot of Notre Dame fans, too.
And like, here's one thing I'll say to you.
Like the 1993 Florida State National Championship,
and you probably remember this off the top of your head
because that's true you are.
Notre Dame beat Florida State, Florida State ended up with the same record.
Yeah, Notre Dame beat Florida State, Notre Dame turned around and lost to Boston College.
They had the same record.
Florida State was given the vote.
It was a vote.
And remember, they wouldn't have been able to play in a playoff.
Florida State went to the Orange Bowl.
That's where they were going.
So it was a travesty then because they had a stupid system.
Yeah.
Notre Dame and Florida State should have played again to figure it out.
So here's my olive branch to you.
On the Andy and Ari on three show, we will formally hand you the 1993 national title.
You can have it, yeah.
You can have it.
I'm a Florida grad.
Taking a national title away from Florida State, like, people would love that in my town.
You can have it.
Yeah.
In return, join us arms linked by stopping that nonsense from happening again.
Paying off Pitt to beat Miami?
Or they can just root for
Yeah, Pitt to win
And then it won't be an issue
But like right now
Join us in the fight
To stop nonsensical rankings
The Notre Dame fans are not going to do that
Because this benefits their team
The Alabama fans are going to continue to freak out
And I don't blame them
But here's the thing
Alabama fans relax
Don't relax about the Iron Bowl thing
Because freak out about the Iron Bowl
Because the Iron Bowl is
Yeah, you're playing at Auburn
You could lose
It is terrifying amounts of pressure
on your team and on Kailen DeBoer.
But if you win the Iron Bowl,
you're going to the playoff.
You're going to the playoff if you win the Iron Bowl.
You're going to be okay.
Yeah.
Just don't lose the Iron Bowl.
Then you will not be okay.
No.
Then there's no hoodie in the world
that will save Kalin DeBore
from the wrath of Alabama fans.
No.
Well, maybe the Roeback one.
That's true.
You should get the rowback one.

We continue Megaboard Wednesday with a mega thread from our LSU site, The Bingle Tiger.
But first, we're going to talk about Panini, the makers of the most collectible sports cards on the planet.
Visit Panini, America.net, to start your collection of college and NFL stars.
Ari has a massive collection already.
I got a pack of Donorous Elite right here.
These are very shiny cards.
They've got some inserts in here that are.
absolutely amazing.
Ari showed us the best of his
the last time we opened one,
but I'm going to open a pack here.
This one, the security on this pack is
pretty intense, Ari. Yeah, some of the
packs are a little bit harder to
get, but
I got it.
You got to be careful not to damage the cards if you're
like yanking on it too hard, you know? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Well, I love this one because it's got
a bunch of classic NFL players
and like
it kicks off with one of my
all-time favorites to watch, Eric Dickerson, the rec specs, the neck roll. He had it all.
This is Eric Dickerson on the Colts. And it was interesting because he had a great Rams career
and a great Colts career. So Eric Dickerson, another classic, Brian Erlocker, played safety
in New Mexico, but then became one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history.
Justin Herbert, perhaps the best defensive player in the game right now,
Miles Garrett and Ari. Uh-oh. I got a big one. A big one. Be careful.
Turn of the century. Numbered to $4.99, Tyler Warren autograph.
Might want to hold on to that one. People love him. He's amazing. He is what. I mean, look, we watched him at Penn State. We knew how great he was at Penn State. And so we expected him to be good in the NFL. But, you know, everybody talks about how good Daniel Jones has been for the Colts this year. Tyler Warren has been a revelation for.
the Colts this year. So we saw it at Penn State. The guy had caught over a hundred balls
at Penn State as a tight end. But yeah, that is a, that's my second Tyler Warren Auto, by the way.
I got a I got a Tyler Warren Auto out of another product last year. So it is a brought up Daniel
Jones there, Andy, because it's a beautiful segue to this bad boy I'm holding my hand right now.
2019 Panini Prism, silver autograph rookie card of Danny Dimes. I picked that up the second he signed
with the Colts for like $80.
And now I think it's worth more than $500.
Wow.
I knew he was going to start games with Anthony Richardson there.
I knew at some point he was going to get a chance.
I didn't know it would be like obviously went much better than I could have imagined
because the Colts now are like one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
And I'm I've got a lot of JSN cards that I'm kind of moving on from because he's really hot right now.
Here's a beautiful one out of Mosaic.
This is a stained glass, S.A. 10 out of,
uh 2023 mosaic look how pretty that card is i found my other tyler warren uh that is beautiful
my other tyler warren autograph i got a luminance tyler warren autograph that i pulled last year
start the pc personal collection lastly and you're going to get a kick out of this one i think this is
a 2015 immaculate collection uh jamis winston rookie ink auto that i've have on my desk look at that
and uh and if he had pulled up that comeback last week yeah
The reason why it's on my desk is because I'm waiting for him to have a moment now that he's the starter there.
And once he does, I'm going to list that.
But we have, you know, JSN cards all over the place.
My entire desk is littered.
That's not the right word because it's not trash.
It's beautiful.
It's covered in cards.
Panediabarica.net to start your collection today, maybe it will someday be as extensive as Ari's.
All right.
Let us go to the Bengal Tiger.
The Ponderosa is the name of the main message.
at the bingo tiger.
This is one of the best parts of your On3 membership.
You get to read everybody's message board.
So if you're not a member of On3 yet, now's the time to start.
You can have a lot of fun reading these message boards.
And this thread is spectacular.
You will take a whole day.
There are people who are just waking up and hitting refresh all day on this thread.
It's the coaching rumors mega thread.
It got posted on November 2nd by LSU Tigers 0582.
and they wrote,
I thought it'd be a good idea
to make a thread
to track all the coaching
rumors during this search
whether it be from real sources
other boards
or gulp tiger droppings
tiger droppings,
a very famous LSU message board
not ours
but you want to be at the Ponderosa
this is a space to discuss
rumors reputable or not
disclaimer
a lot of what will be sent here
is probably insanely untrue
this is just the fun part of it
serious discussion is welcome however
and he closed it with lane train
that thread is now up to
255 pages
when Lane Kiffin's family
visited Baton Rouge
the first evidence of said visit
appeared on the coaching
rumors mega thread by someone
who took pictures of the plane at the airport
I do love the thread
title most of what we're going to discuss
here is insanely untrue probably
but let's do it anyway. That's the fun of this
it's the imagining of all the
scenarios and talking it out with your friends
Like, that's why we do what we do for a living to talk about football,
which is what we talk about if we were at barbecue,
would be talking about it in the car on a road trip.
This is what friends do.
This is what guys do.
I love the thread title.
Yeah, I'm telling you that the message boards are,
I think they're the most fun part of the Onthrie membership.
Obviously, getting to read me and Ari,
getting to read Pete Nacos and Chris Lowe, that's great.
But I love the message boards so much.
So LSU Tigers 0582 hopped in a little bit ago.
and said, what's going to be more fun?
Lane's offense or making fun of Florida?
And now everybody's answering that question today.
That's the topic de jure.
And I think this is so funny because we talked a lot about Lane Kiffin yesterday.
I suspect we'll talk a lot about Lane Kiffin tomorrow as well.
But the LSU fans are sure he's coming there.
The Florida fans are sure he's coming there.
The Ole Miss fans, about half of them are sure he's staying.
and about half of them seem sure he's leaving.
It is amazing how much certainty there is among the boards.
And there is no certainty with Lane Kiffin because he's the only one who can tell us what's going on.
And he hasn't said anything.
Yeah, Andy, I actually was amused yesterday by your Twitter presence of like,
hey, guys, just want to let you know, I have no idea what he's going to do.
Yes.
But I wanted to play a game with you.
I don't know if you want to play the game.
Of course.
is if you had to answer today.
If you had to guess today, if you had to guess today where he goes,
and this isn't based on any information,
this isn't based on just your gut instinct on reading the situation,
having covering college football for a long time,
what would your blind November 19th guess that could change tomorrow,
but in the moment right now, what is your guess?
I will preface this by saying,
and I have no idea that's going to do.
He's the ultimate wild card.
My experience covering college football doesn't matter
because it's Elaine Kiffin.
I don't know what he's going to do.
He's going to make the choice.
I'm going to say he's going to stay at Ole Miss.
That's my God.
He's going to, I think, like, all of this is building
to the ultimate pop of, I'm staying,
probably posting the Wolf of Wall Street scene.
That's, that's,
that's my gut but i'm telling you right now in the town where i live i get beat up for saying that
um my gut is that he's going to stay too so that's my thought again nobody knows i don't know
what i'm talking about you listening don't know what you're talking about but none of us do
if you're not lane kiffin you don't know my guess is predicated on the realization that he is
at a place already that's going to the playoff and he's being hired by a place that is
I also think that being a coach and building something,
building a team that you think is capable of making a run,
that would be something I would be attached to being a part of.
And, you know, I know that coaches make financial decisions.
I know players make financial decisions all the time that, you know,
outweigh the relationships aspect of it.
But, like, at the same time,
you're at a place that has already proven could win a national championship conceivably.
I think last year's team was even better than this year's team
when it was playing its best football,
which means that you can do it.
it more years than you can't.
Like, it's not just as a one-off opportunity.
Like, I think that seeing this through in a healthy way this season will,
will maybe outweigh the benefit of leaving.
And here's the other thing, too.
Who's to say that Kaylon DeBoer doesn't lose to Auburn?
Oh, who's to say that Kaylon DeBoer isn't on the hot seat this year?
I mean, but I'm just saying, like, what you're saying is a lot can change in a week
and a half.
And a lot can change in a year.
Like, if you want, it's not like this is going to be the last time you're a coaching.
candidate. Like, if you are open to leaving or you could be Alabama's coach in two or three
year. We don't know how it's going to go. I'm not saying that maybe DeBoer will be there for 20
years. I'm just saying we don't know. And this isn't the last opportunity that you're going to get
to go to another place if you feel like that's what you want to do in the future. So,
so I know LSU fans want Lane Kiffin and it would be very exciting if he comes. And I think
you'd win pretty big if he comes. Like, I, there's, if Lane Kiffin,
picks LSU or Florida, I'm not going to be like, oh, it might not work.
I'm going to say it's probably going to work.
I think he'll do very well at either place if that's where he goes.
If he doesn't choose either one, let's say he did stay at Ole Miss.
Who do we like for LSU?
I'm going to throw a name out there that has been mentioned multiple times in the 255 pages
of the coaching rumors mega thread on the Bengal Tiger.
And we talked about him yesterday.
and we went into coaching search season thinking he might not be movable,
but the news yesterday suggests he probably is.
I know who you're going to say.
Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State.
I think he would kill it at LSU if Lane Kiffin doesn't take that job.
Yeah.
What are the specific traits from Kenny Dillingham that you like the most,
like age-wise?
Is it like youth?
Is it energy?
Well, this is the youth and energy, but also it's the fact that he took over a more
a rebutton situation at Arizona State. That roster was depleted completely. Everything went wrong.
They fired Herm Edwards. There's nobody there. He had to, like, we talked about all the guys Dion took
out of the portal. Kenny Dillingham was only a few guys behind him. Yeah. He had to completely revamp
that roster. So if I'm killing Dillingham, I would come into a situation like LSU. First of all,
there's going to be guys you're going to ID that you definitely want to keep.
yeah and you're going to keep them who knows maybe sam levitt shows up i don't know i don't know
so i do know he's winning games right now with jeff sims a quarterback and i think there are people
at georgia tech and Nebraska that will tell you that that wasn't possible
they're seven and three right now they are still actually mathematically alive in the big 12 race
and there's a chance they can win out and be nine and three and be the only team that beat texas tech
in the league. I'd hire Kenny Dillingham anywhere. Yeah, I agree. I think Florida,
if Lane doesn't pick them, I think Florida should go after him too. Yeah. Yeah. I'm just
wondering if we look back five years, the coaches that are hired in this cycle, if sitting head
coaches will be the ones with prevailing success or if we'll look back and go, I cannot believe
we didn't talk about like Will Stein more often. I just don't know if Will Stein is going to
to get one of these.
Yeah.
And if you're Will Stein and you don't get one of these,
you might want to stay at Oregon.
Because you get paid for it.
And you get it paid at a G5 head coaching job.
No, if I were him, I wouldn't leave
until I got a good Power 5 coaching job.
I'm just like, I wonder if we're just being
blinded by what's right
in front of our faces instead of...
Oh, no, I think you're...
I think you're right about that.
And I think...
But I think it's almost too far gone
with these people, especially
the ones like LSU
and like Penn State that had hefty buyout numbers.
And so when they made the decision,
they were making the decision thinking there was a hefty buyout.
Now, look, Penn State only ended up having to pay a $9 million lump sum payout to James Franklin.
They negotiated it down, which is basically getting out, like getting out of jail free.
Basically, yeah, yeah.
And look, you had a feeling James Franklin was going to work again.
So he and he is.
already got the job and we did the math on this because i know people were like why would you
only take nine million dollars when they owe you 49 well whatever you make it your new job was
coming off the top of that 49 the nine because of you negotiated it part of that negotiation is you
don't there's no offset so they're just going to give you nine million dollars and then whatever
you make from now on is yours and so time value of money if you were to put nine million dollars
in a kind of medium growth mutual fund,
you're probably looking at 13 and a half after six years.
So if he thought he was going to make more than $36 million over the next six years,
he's going to make more money this way.
Yeah.
So that's why you do that.
And I also think that he's a human and, you know, the less litigation and the less,
I think getting out of it and just moving on, taking your money and just taking the next step is an important thing.
LSU's trying to pay Brian Kelly zero.
before Scott Woodward was fired,
Scott Woodward tried to pay him $25 million.
And I think I might have taken that if I was Brian Kelly
if I thought I was going to get another job.
Yeah.
He had an offset, you know, duty to mitigate as well.
So his next job, the total comes out of the buyout.
However, we know now that the governor of Louisiana,
Jeff Landry, wanted them to pay zero in buyout money.
And this is probably, it's not,
going to go to a jury, but there will be legal wrangling. Obviously, Ryan Kelly's already
filed suit. There will be a settlement eventually, and Brian Kelly is going to get some money.
The question is how much does he get? Well, I wanted to ask you this because we've spent
zero time talking about it. What is your position or viewpoint on whether Brian Kelly is a candidate
immediately? Like, we haven't spoken about this at all. Like, is he a candidate for a job?
What's the job? I'll give you, I can give you one that hasn't open yet that I think will open,
that I think you might consider him.
And what's that?
Michigan State.
Yeah, I would do that.
I don't know that there's a lot of places,
because I think the book on Brian Kelly is
that he was not working as hard as he should have been.
Yeah.
And I don't think James Franklin had that problem.
I think James Franklin's was, it wasn't working out,
but nobody was accusing him of not working hard.
Yeah.
And I don't know if he would have it in him
to go back to a G5 team at this point.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't either.
And this is a guy, like Brian Kelly came up through Grand Valley State, D2.
He was at Central Michigan, FCS, in the MAC, in the FBS.
He was at Cincinnati, which was a, when he took the job was a, what do they call them, one of the six BCS conferences,
who actually considered a major conference in the Big East, and then it became a group of five.
school but while he was there it was in one of the major conferences so he climbed the ladder that
way i'm just thinking of like open jobs and let's just do the speed around that you and booker played
yesterday yes or no would you hire brian kelly for this job or do you think he could be successful in
this job okay Auburn no Arkansas nope UCLA yes Oklahoma State nope
Stanford
No
Oregon State
Nope
And then I don't think he would take anything below that
Right
UCLA is interesting
UCLA is interesting
You know we keep hearing
Different names
Bob Chesney's an interesting name
We keep hearing for UCLA
He's a James Madison right now
Is viewed as a northeast guy
But he's just a good coach
So Pat Fitzgerald
Who is up for jobs this year
I think would be a good candidate
at UCLA
or Stanford.
So we'll see how that goes.
But yeah, we just mentioned James Franklin.
Producer River has some video from the James Franklin introductory press conference.
They introduced him with Inner Sandman playing.
So they did it at the basketball arena, and he comes out of the tunnel as InterSandman is playing with his wife,
which is quite a scene.
But he was pumped.
And he had actually choked up a little bit talking about Brent Pry, the coach at Virginia Tech,
who was fired, who came from James Franklin's staff.
And, you know, he choked up saying, hey, you know,
Brent poured his soul into this program,
and I'm proud to be taking it over from him.
And then a very funny moment talking about getting Frank Beamer's blessing to take the job.
I want to thank Coach Beamer.
I've, uh,
as everybody knows, Coach Beamer,
Beamer's the man, and he built this place.
And I've asked for the blessings of two people,
Sanya Allah, my father-in-law, I called him and asked for his blessing to marry his daughter,
Fumi, and then the night before signing a contract, I called Coach Beamer
and asked him for his blessing of taking over his program.
I was a little concerned because I called him three times and he didn't answer the phone.
So I called his wife and she said, I'm sorry, Coach, we didn't have your number.
But I was able to get Coach Beamer's blessing and that means a ton to me.
I'm somebody that values the history, the traditions, the legends,
and obviously nobody's more important than Virginia Tech football than Frank Beamer and his family.
That is a very cool moment from that press.
conference and i'm i'm excited to see what james franklin does we need to reach out to virginia tech
uh see about getting james franklin on the show we know how he feels about ketchup on hot dogs
but uh now we need to know how he feels about turkey legs because that's quite the delicacy in
blacksburg yeah uh he also made a comment about uh how there's an airport in blacksbird
and how that's going to help out because like the recruiting situation so i don't know if he's got
like blood on his fangs or not but i'm very curious
The Blacksburg Airport and the State College Airport are, they're not that, I don't think they're that different.
I know, but isn't the State College Airport kind of a pain in the ass?
Yes, there's a, it's a runway length issue, I think.
Certain size planes can't get in there.
So, yeah, this is, this is going to be.
I'm very curious how James Franklin is going to recall, speak about, and frame Penn State moving forward, because he's going to talk about it.
Yeah.
It's going to come up in conversations of.
like, hey, when you were at Penn State, what about this, this and this?
Or they'll say, when I was at Penn State,
this, like, I'm very curious if he's going to come across
as resentful.
It'll be interesting.
It's a good question.
This is a good question.
I don't think he'll, there might be moments where he comes across as
resentful.
Now, he did mention the press conference.
He said, thankful for 12 years.
You don't usually get 12 years at a place.
And I think he understands what happened,
even if he's pissed about it.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's like I've gotten into it a little bit with some Penn State fans on the internet.
And I think I misspoke in saying that he was fired for not turning Penn State into Ohio State.
I think that's a little bit drastic and not true.
And they were right to be upset about that.
Yeah, he was fired for not occasionally beating Ohio State.
Right.
And that's very different than what I said.
So I apologize for that.
But at the same time,
thinking that James Franklin is a very good coach and a great hire for Virginia Tech
while also believing he should have been fired at Penn State can both be true, right?
100%.
It's a different level of job.
Yeah.
We've seen him succeed at what I would consider a tougher job than this, and that's 2012 era of Vanderbilt.
Yeah.
So, like, this job is not easy, but it's not as hard as that, and he was really good at that job.
yeah so i i'm excited to see what he does i because i think the aces like just look at the top
of the acc standings and tell me that league's not wide open every year yeah every year it would
be kind of cool to have virginia tech back on the i mean when i was growing up virginia tech was in
the discussion every year that's the part that like kills me whenever we do these stupid
super league lists and and all that who you leave off like i defy you to watch the the the real
Saman entrance for a game and say that's not a place that needs to be in big time
college football.
Right.
It has to be.
It has to be.
And I think part of this hire is to make sure it is.
I think part of this hire is to, one, remember, Whit Babcock went to the board and said,
we need all this money.
And the board said, fine, we're going to commit this money.
But they also had to raise it.
Well, Rames Franklin is going to help them raise it.
I think a lot of other hires would not have been very helpful on that front.
James Franklin, just by the fact that people know him, know his record,
and the fact that he's super charismatic and willing to do this stuff
and has always been willing to do this stuff,
that he's going to help them raise that money.
And the thing is, whenever the next thing comes along,
whatever it is, whatever it's going to look like.
And we haven't talked a lot about the Big Ten deal
with the big investment, the UC investments and all that where they were trying to extend
the grant of rights, it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
So the next thing may be closer than we imagine.
Well, thank God that's not happening, right?
We'll get into that.
That one requires its own episode almost.
And maybe some pre-episode studying on my behalf.
Yes.
That's a very complicated.
There's a lot there.
But if you're Virginia Tech, you want to be relevant in the ACC when whatever happens happens.
You want to be competing for championships in the ACC when whatever happens happens.
And I think that's a critical piece of this.
That's why you hire James Franklin now.
Yep.
And I think that they have a chance.
I really do.
And, you know, my hope is that, you know, in the offseason, we're discussing recruiting pickups and transfer portal pickups and Virginia Tech enters San Francisco.
man back into the conversation a little bit um right kind of the same way that Colorado maybe not to
the same extent you know as Colorado did when Dion took over but Colorado took a lot of airwaves
for a while and I think that's important so I think James Franklin will go grab them too that that's the
other thing I remember when he was at Vanderbilt I mean he was he was wanting to do all kinds of
stuff he's the first like he let me embed with them on national signing day it was the first
time anybody'd let anybody do that and everybody copied it afterward like and it was it was his
idea so like this is this is the sort of thing he would he would call into radio stations in
Nashville like if they were talking Titans or they were talking balls and and it wouldn't be like
this is James Franklin the head coach of Vanderbilt he would just call the regular line and be like
hey this is James in Nashville and then he'd get on and just he'd be like why aren't we talking about
Vanderbilt football.
That's the type of stuff you do.
Like when I started at Sirius XM, I was told, be aware if you get a James or Jim from
State College, it's James Franklin.
And he'll just call the regular number and get on the line.
Yeah, yeah.
A coach getting more with less early in his career, although it's a different time period,
still there's something to be gleaned from that.
Like you don't just lose an ability.
Yeah.
Right. And also, when you do have a name and a reputation, and you are maybe going to get some resources, I think you're going to be able to get some dudes.
It's not going to be the same level of talent as they have at Penn State, but they don't need that level of talent.
And given the way that people acted when he was fired, like, it's hard not to root for him.
I mean, he really touched a lot of people when he was in state college.
right the different big difference between when brian kelly got fired at lSU and you couldn't find
a single person saying anything nice about him james franklin people were coming out of the woodwork saying
nice things about him yep so yeah congrats uh virginia tech welcome back of the podcast yeah we'll probably
have seen a lot of you very soon but i i can't wait i'm i'm just really excited about this and
And I think he's going to do a very good job there.
Let us do one more megaboard thread.
This one is from Missouri today, our Missouri site, and this is the Tiger Walk Message Board.
So, Doya, one of their posters, posted this on Sunday morning after the game.
And Missouri beat Mississippi State on Saturday night.
And he said, the title of this is.
the drink question. And I mean, the reason is Eli Drinkwitz's name has come up in a bunch of these
searches. Florida, LSU, I believe it's come up in the Penn State search. There have been
rumors about Eli Drinkwitz at all these places because he's had a lot of success at Missouri. It makes
a lot of sense. So this is what Doya wrote. Last night's TV analyst said something. Drink said
$2, Fortune 500 companies in Missouri and none advertise in the stadium. Now, we've all heard that
before, not sure if it's true or false. Also, don't know if he's told this week or if he's parroting
old stuff. But we all believe
Missouri could not keep up NIL-wise.
I said it last summer that if drink leaves,
it is because of lack of NIL. It seems we got
outbid for Metteer, Mendoza, and
two linemen. I know we have good
NIL, but is it great?
And they go on there.
It's a great question because
Eli Drinkwitz has done a lot
to help Missouri
be able to build a better roster.
This is a guy who was lobbying the state
legislature to change laws.
so that he could have an advantage in recruiting.
And you've seen that advantage play out at times.
You've seen that advantage play out where they're getting guys
who are kind of top of their position group in the country at Missouri.
But if they feel like they can't keep up or if he feels like he can't keep up
and some bigger fish comes along and wants to take him,
I understand where the Missouri people are coming from,
like feeling somewhat hopeless that they can't keep him.
Yeah, it's going to be interesting, too, because once Lane Kiffin comes to a decision, which could happen in the next week, right?
Once we know what Lane Kiffin is doing and then the fantasy land of getting him has to disappear from two or the three places that are involved in this, how much intensity gets ramped up for people like Eli Drenkowitz.
Like he hasn't really been a main fixture of the Florida discussion, but if Lane Kiffin does not choose to go to Florida, all of a sudden, do you latch on to that?
And then you start going full court press on him.
And then all of a sudden we're having a discussion of like,
is Mizzou as good of a job as Florida?
Because I think you can make the case that Ole Misses is good of a job with Florida right now,
but is Mizzou.
And that I think is the heart of the question on the-
And he hasn't been able to get over the hump at Mizzou,
and there's two arguments to that.
You can say it's because of something structural
that they can't necessarily get the roster to compete,
or you can say it's because he hasn't gotten over the hump
and that is sort of the James Franklin at Penn State situation.
Like, Eli Drinkwoods wins the games he's supposed to win.
I'm trying to remember a game that he's lost that he wasn't supposed to lose.
Like, he wins those games.
But they don't have the shocking upset where they beat one of the just supremely more talented teams.
Yeah.
And they played Alabama really tough this year.
But you do think that he would be a good fit of Florida if push came to shove.
right? Oh, yes, Florida, LSU, Auburn, any of those. I think he could win anywhere.
Yeah. I think that Eli Drinkwitz is a pretty relentless recruiter and also will do whatever he needs to do behind the scenes to work with his administration to create the best possible situation. I think you look at what he's done at Missouri and it's a situation where they've had an athletic director change while he's been there. But he has done a great.
great job setting them up where that was a job where you think in this era or especially the
previous year before revenue share that so the NIL but pre-rev share that Missouri should have
been one of the have-nots that just got left behind. He made damn sure they weren't. And I think
that's really important. And I think that means he'll be creative and he'll be able to figure stuff
out wherever he is, whether it's at Missouri or somewhere else, to make sure there's still a
competitive roster. Just do me a favor and don't say things like there's more to be proud of than
making the playoff. Yeah, I don't do that true. Just don't say it. Like Florida doesn't I
doesn't want to hear that shit. Yeah, but Butch Jones will tell you that, uh, yeah, just say I'm
disappointed that we didn't. And that's it. That's all you got to do. Yeah. We love, but I love these
guys and we're going to, we're going to try to win. If there's a ball and a scoreboard, we're going
to try to win. Like I should, I should open a PR consulting firm. Like that's all you got to say.
Yeah. Because it's like, I think that like what the Derrell
things that you can say that are true um but you shouldn't say it yeah exactly so but i'm i'm
interested to see what happens with with eli drinkwitz the missouri fans in this thread
very reasonable like it's it's one of the more intelligent threads you're going to read
because they've clearly thought all this through and they have very good reasons for feeling the
way they do some of them are obviously frustrated because they would like to to be able to keep their
coach, they don't like the idea that, you know, any of these other schools snaps their fingers
and he might just come. But I think they all kind of understand the situation. And I think
they understand they got a really good coach right now. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm looking out for them this
week. I think they're going to give Oklahoma a game. We really do. We talked about it. Okay,
what did I just say? Doesn't have those kind of wins. That would be one of those kind of wins.
Yeah. I don't know if Bow's playing, but if he is, it might be a, it might be a. I,
So watching what Eli has said this week,
I'm not as confident as I was on Monday.
Because he did warm up last week,
but Eli said this week that was part of his rehab.
It's all part of the plan.
And it was a dislocated ankle.
So what sounds like a very serious injury.
So it may be that he's not ready yet.
And it is Matt Zoller's going against Oklahoma.
Either way, I think it's possible that we're watching that.
game with you know sitting up in the third quarter so yeah absolutely knock on
oklahoma i just think that missou is a number 22 team and they want to win a big game on
the road yeah and it's not easy to come across or come off of an emotional win the way that
oklahoma did and get right back up on the on the horse and be playing that intense ball for four
quarters it's just teams fail in those situations all the time keep your eyes peeled it is wednesday so
Wednesday night, 8 p.m. Eastern time is usually when the SEC drops those
first availability reports of the week. So we'll see where Brokevula lands on that.
We'll see where R. Mason Thomas lands on that. Remember, Oklahoma held him out.
He has the injury from the strips, you know, strip scoop score play in the Tennessee game
where he actually got hurt on the play while running for a touchdown. But he missed last
week's game against Alabama. Important part of their pass rush. But
Oklahoma has one of the
more, one of the deeper front sevens
in the country.
They can, they are one of the few
teams that can lose an impact ed rusher
and still be okay.
But they obviously need Armason,
if they're going to make the playoff, they're going to need Armason Thomas
in the playoffs. So, yeah, they want to get him back.
But so watch out for Bo Pervula,
R Mason Thomas, a couple others
on that availability report coming out Wednesday.
On the Saturday for Oklahoma, so.
Sure does. Need, need to win this one.
need to win the LSU game.
It's going to be fun to watch.
