Welcome to Andy and Ari on 3...
What?
What a day!
What a day, Ari!
We just watched Tennessee go down at Arkansas.
Alabama went down to Vanderbilt.
USC went down to Minnesota.
I mean, it feels like two years since Missouri went to Texas A&M and got smoked.
But that was this afternoon.
Yeah, I made a joke right before we got onto the show but it's like
by the time this night's over with Alabama's gonna be
back in the top five man
I told you when we first started doing the show
together Andy that if I
come to the show
with the hair slicked back
all ready to go that like
I'm just on it i just look like i
just got out of a bar fight i don't know what's going on here i don't even know where to begin
i feel like we're going to be on here for two and a half hours and then we still might have
to come back if cal beats miami like this was absolute insanity of a day i don't even know
where we begin to contextualize it but i think it's kind of like eating like a 500 ounce steak you just start taking bites and hope you get there right
that's right how do you eat how do you eat an elephant one diego pavia run at a time
that's how you get big al um but i i guess we should start with we we talked a lot about
alabama vandy on our instant reaction show that was still the craziest result but right
now we add Tennessee to this mix Tennessee goes to Arkansas and loses because Tennessee was one
of the ones you were like okay where are we putting the Vols in relation to Alabama now
that Alabama's lost well where do we put Tennessee now yeah uh I I can't even begin to try to think about how to
stack these in order here um but you know Tennessee goes on the road after an open week
an emotional win against Oklahoma and you know they lose and Arkansas's backup quarterback was
in right Taylor Green got injured so like I mean, and Nico ran out of bounds
instead of throwing it to the end zone on the last play of the game.
But, yeah, we're talking about a team that two weeks ago
I thought was a legitimate SEC contender,
and now they're losing on the road to Arkansas.
I think we both think that Arkansas is a lot better.
We've been saying that on the show all year than people have been saying,
but still, like, Tennessee is supposed to be above this.
Alabama is supposed to be above this alabama's supposed to be above this and you know one theme that i've been getting a
lot just in my mentions and maybe i need to mute my mentions on social media because it's getting
to me but like everyone's like they haven't played anybody well andy who has played somebody like oh
nobody's played anybody they're gonna say they'll say that in week 13 that they haven't played
anybody so just don't worry about that they haven't played anybody so just don't worry about
that they haven't played anybody people though they haven't played anybody people are just going
to say that over and over again but i really want to dive into the question though let's dive into
it though what's the answer who has played somebody um well uh alabama's played somebody
they played georgia and they beat them then Then they played Vanderbilt and they lost.
Tennessee's played Oklahoma and beaten them.
But they played Arkansas and they lost.
Like, it's mind-boggling.
It is mind-boggling.
The one thing I feel like we can say, well, I don't know if we,
probably not because these things change from week to week,
but Marley for Prez in the chat.
Pittman is safe.
I mean, I do actually feel like Sam Pittman should be safe.
Like Sam Pittman has done a hell of a job.
They have an overtime loss at Oklahoma State.
They have a five-point loss to Texas A&M,
which in light of what Texas A&M just did to Missouri, looks like a pretty good performance.
Arkansas is pretty good. Yeah, they are very good. You know what I've
been thinking about all day, Andy? When we did the live reaction show after the noon
slot talking about how A&M fans had the best day of the week or the best
time window because their team got a blowout win, they could feel good and sip their whiskey.
They got to watch this. And they can watch the rest of the night with impunity just laughing at people you would talk
about a day of a texas a&m fan right now like that nobody's had a better day than an a&m fan today
uh can you imagine your first your first well you probably had some drinks during the game
but but let's say you didn't let's say you you were on edge and wanted to make sure that you just enjoyed the game.
So you went back home.
You poured that first one as you're watching Alabama Vandy.
Like, you're gone at this point.
You are 17 sheets to the wind at this point because you have watched Vanderbilt beat Alabama in non-fluky fashion,
which is probably the strangest thing that happened all day.
You watched Arkansas limit Tennessee's offense all night,
score at the end of the game.
You watched Max Brosmer get shoved over the goal line
for Minnesota to beat USC.
By the way, you're going to owe me $1,000,
but I'm going to wait until Penn State beats them next week.
Andy, you're going to have to wait a little bit longer than that.
There might be a five-loss team in this bracket by the time this season's over.
It is funny when you think, though, that USC losing in Minnesota
and Michigan losing to Washington, while seemingly in the middle of the game
finding an answer at quarterback, are just buried at the bottom
of what happened today.
We found Jack Tuttle today we found jack washington but washington b michigan yeah it's unbelievable yeah and the best thing about this is that you went to the florida ucf game thinking
that your night was going to be you know potentially miserable florida gets an easy
win you don't have to worry about it and now you come back to the you're in the press box i think that your night was going to be potentially miserable. Florida gets an easy win.
You don't have to worry about it.
And now you come back to the,
you're in the press box, I think, right?
So like- Yeah, I'm in the press box still.
You're still over there living the dream.
So in the name of trying to be somewhat organized,
do you want to try to just like break down Bama,
Vandy first, and then we'll try to get people what they want
or how do you want to do this?
Yeah, let's do that um somebody in the chat clearly was was listening to us the other day
Ratchet Dewan says Pavia will be story of the year that's right we nominated him for story of the
year the other day we said hey you're a nominee for story of the year because you said only God
knows who's gonna beat or who's gonna win the Vandy Alabama game. Well, guess what?
God knew apparently more than we did because we all thought Alabama was going to win.
Yeah, I think somebody needs to go get that vacuum cleaner trophy made for us and we can get it printed with Vanderbilt's quarterback's name on it.
Connor Stallion's Memorial Story of the Year trophy.
Yes, Diego Pavia, the leader in the club.
Interesting betting stat I saw on the internet tonight,
Ari. Only one quarterback in the past 20
years has led three teams to wins while more than a three
touchdown underdog, and his name is Diego Pavia.
He was sensational. We've got to hand it to him
because there's a lot of really great things to say about Vanderbilt, and he was sensational. Like, I mean, we got to hand it to him because you know,
there's a lot of really great things to say about Vanderbilt.
And I know that the majority of our audience is probably going to be more
focused on what this means for Bama,
but we need to take a second for Vanderbilt because the thing that I was
most impressed with Andy,
and we said it on the live show and I wrote about it on,
on three is that you mentioned it earlier in the show,
but like usually when teams that are 25-point underdogs
go in and play in Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State,
and end up winning, it's kind of a fluky,
penalty-infested, boneheaded decision,
turnovers-all-over-the-place type of game
that's just sloppy and one team doesn't show up.
And the craziest thing about that game was that
I thought that Vanderbilt existed in a high-powered,
big-time football game
with a team that we thought was going to win the national title 72 hours ago or 24 hours ago
and won. It went punch for punch. It was up 13-0. It was up a little bit more than that.
Alabama cuts it to two. They go down the field, kick a field goal, strip sack, score. I mean,
everything that Alabama did to counter it
at a time in which you would have thought that Alabama
would take control of that game, Vanderbilt had a punch back
that was even more powerful than the one that Alabama left.
Even the Ryan Williams touchdown where he pirouetted in the air
like a beautiful Cirque du Soleil model.
It was not a circus catch, a Cirque du Soleil catch.
You're right.
The one where he was
able to contort his body in midair and still land in bounds and then run to the end zone
like those types of plays are supposed to be the the types of plays that a Vanderbilt team goes well
you know we don't have that can't compete with that and they did they did they did uh Matt in
the chat is it 2007 all over again, y'all?
God, I hope so.
Because the 12-team playoff would have been the greatest way to decide 2007.
So, like, this is, if we can just get this every week.
Because here's the thing, Ari.
We kept saying October 12th of the week, October 12th of the week.
And then it was like, well, maybe it's October 19th. And you and I said during the week, don't sleep on this one because it's the ones we don't think
are coming that get us. And this is the one that got us and it got us in so many different ways.
And the Bama Vandy thing is so emblematic of that. I mean, think about this. The goalposts
from Vanderbilt stadium got walked down Broadway. They got walked down
Broadway Saturday night. People
are throwing chairs off the rooftops. Lord knows what Morgan
Wallen's doing tonight, but they're walking the goalposts down
Broadway because Vanderbilt beat Alabama, for God's sake.
It's not the right time for you and I who work for a company that's headquartered there, to not be there.
That would have been pandemonium.
I know, right?
But, you know, I don't know.
We would have been doing this from a rooftop on Broadway.
Lord knows how many beers I would have had by this point.
Yeah, I haven't had one yet today, and I don't know how I got there.
But, you know, here we are, sipping back to Diet DP at 11 p.m.
So here's the deal.
I don't know what this is going to mean for Vanderbilt as a program.
I said earlier on in the week that I felt kind of bad for Clark Lee and Barton Simmons and their staff
because their plan of how they wanted to attack this thing blown up during the NIL transfer portal era.
And then here they are probably delivering the biggest win in,
in Vanderbilt history and doing it in a way that makes me feel like Vandy
belongs on the field with,
you know,
anybody in the country,
you know,
we'll turn around and see them losing by 10,
but to Mississippi state in two weeks,
this is how the sport works,
but it's just was a remarkable showing.
And I think that we learned just as much about Vandy as we did about
Alabama. And we learned something big about Alabama vandy as we did about alabama and and we
learned something big about alabama too andy which is uh you know daddy ain't home no more
nick saban ain't home anymore and you know it is kind of a funny thing because i do feel like we
were living in this fantasy land or this maybe this like land of acceptance that nick saban
wasn't going to coach
and live forever, but the thing that he built was going to shine through
and that Kalen DeBoer was going to take it
and things were going to keep going without a hitch.
And for the first five weeks of the season, it really felt that way.
It felt that way when Alabama beat Georgia last week.
Their team is really, really good.
It's very deep because of what Saban helped build.
Ryan Williams was a guy that Kalen DeBoer plucked himself and kept in the fold.
And, you know, it felt like things were moving as seamlessly as possible.
And we lived in this reality or this fake world where we actually convinced ourselves that Alabama could still be Alabama without this man.
And then out of nowhere, the only way that God could know Vandy shows up and it reminds you that,
you know,
this Alabama team went a hundred consecutive games between 2007 and
2021 without losing to an unranked opponent,
a hundred games in a row,
they did not lose these games.
And I don't know the reason why that happened.
I don't know if
it's because the other team wasn't scared or because nick saban wasn't able to you know
psychologically intimidate people but alabama is a different place now and i feel like we have to
accept that reality doesn't mean that they can't be good it doesn't mean that they can't go on to
win the national title this year or get back into the mix they absolutely most certainly will
but it's different as you're saying, Cal just scored a very long touchdown
on fourth and one. This is just one of those
days, buddy. Just one of those days. And here's the thing.
I believe you about the saving stuff. I said it. Daddy ain't
home anymore. That said, Alabama still
might win the national title. Alabama probably is
going to make the playoff.
That's the part we got to come to grips with. And maybe
this is not a 12-team playoff thing, because a 12-team playoff hasn't actually even happened
yet. This is a transfer portal
transfer rules NIL thing where
the prohibitive depth is gone
because players are more efficiently distributed now.
You have chances for teams like Vanderbilt to beat teams like
Alabama. Nick Saban saw this coming. Nick Saban didn't want to
work in a world where a team like Vanderbbilt could beat a team like alabama but that's the world
that they live in now yeah well the thing you have to start to analyze and this might be a
monday or tuesday topic because there's so much to get through today but just something to put
on the radar of like is this 2007 all over again is going to be a question that we probably hear
quite a bit it's something that people in the chat have been saying.
We've seen it on Twitter, all that stuff.
But the question isn't, is this 2007 again?
It's whether or not the sport is built in a way that makes 2007 more likely to happen on an annual basis.
Like that was a very crazy year in a sport that is pretty consistent with who's good and who's bad
during a time period
where recruiting was still king now if you do believe that vanderbilt is situated in a way
that's gives them a chance to compete physically snap for snap with alabama which we just saw with
our own two eyes but what's the vanderbilt that vanderbilt can go get New Mexico State's quarterback and then suddenly be able to compete with Alabama.
Because that's what happened. If we really wanted to break it all down,
if we wanted to boil it down to its essence, that's what happened.
Yeah. What I will never understand is how Vanderbilt
was able to run the ball down Alabama's throat
for four quarters.
I'll never understand how they went 12 for 18 on third down.
They did things physically in that game that kept up with the team
that is supposed to eventually wear that down.
And Diego Pavia is a hell of a player, and that one throw that he made,
I think it was in the third quarter or the early fourth quarter
where he fourth and two pass up the middle. I mean, that's type of play that maybe vanderbilt wouldn't have a quarterback that
could make two years ago i'm down to understand that but that's still like it's like on one hand
i want to believe and all the evidence has shown that the sport is set up in a way now where
rosters are neutralized in terms of the stark talent advantage but on paper these teams
are still pretty unevenly matched like alabama is not an even match for vanderbilt you know maybe
there's a player that you can throw in there that neutralizes it a little bit but still over the
course of a four quarter game it's still supposed to shake out in the end where the team that's
deeper faster bigger and stronger wins and that's not what faster, bigger, and stronger wins. And that's
not what happened on Saturday in Nashville. No, it's not what happened in Nashville. It's
not what happened in Fayetteville. It's not what happened in Minneapolis. And that's probably the
new reality, the new normal, because again, I think players are distributed more efficiently.
Now you don't have the massively prohibitive depth advantage.
Although, look, Georgia did boa constrict Auburn.
They got back to normal.
So that's the question is who can get back to their normal after they get shocked
and then make sure that doesn't happen again.
All right, we got to go to Fayetteville after this.
We've been to Nashville.
We've watched the goalposts march up and down Broadway.
After this word from Wendy's, we're going to Fayetteville.
Ari, your official welcome to On 3.
We are presented by Wendy's, the Saucy Nugs.
That's our specialty item.
We have every flavor of saucy nug.
You've been training for this your
entire life. You know, I was telling everybody
before this, but my dad looked at me
in the eyes when I was a kid and he said, son,
you can be anything you want to be.
You just got to put your mind to it and work hard.
And I said, I want to eat
Wendy's on camera.
I made it. Here I am.
So, I'm going to just get started.
I'm going to grab some garlic parm.
Okay.
The garlic parm is a very full, savory.
The honey barbecue's got your sweet.
This is your ultimate savory here.
Buttery and savory.
Nothing better than washing it down with a crisp zero, too.
You know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
A little Coke Zero action.
Now, that's a spicy buffalo.
That's tremendous.
I think that's kind of the perfect.
That might be my favorite.
This is the Parmesan garlic, and this one I haven't tried yet.
Which one is this one?
It's a little bit hotter.
Parmesan garlic.
Oh, this is spicy Parmesan garlic.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
It's pretty damn good.
See this?
I keep changing my favorite. I think that's the point of. Yeah, yeah. Okay. It's pretty damn good. See this? I keep changing my favorite.
I think that's the point of this exercise, right?
Yes.
That's my favorite one.
I could put down 32 ounces of Coke Zero and be like, where's the next 32 ounces of Coke Zero?
Well, and hey, we're pre-refills in the restaurant.
So Wendy's new Saucy Nugs.
Take the crispy and spicy nugs you love and turn them up to 11.
Choose between flavors like buffalo, honey barbecue, garlic parm,
or if you're a real heat seeker, try the spicy ghost pepper only
on Wendy's signature Spicy Nugs.
I dare you.
That's seven delicious ways to try the nugs you already love.
Pick a flavor, grab some extra nappies, and prepare to nug.
I've never nugged before.
All right, Ari.
We're going to Fayetteville.
Not a place that Tennessee has had good memories of.
1998, the national title team almost got derailed there.
The 2024 team did go down there.
And I thought when they got it to 14 to three, I went back to what we said
after they beat Oklahoma.
Okay.
They found ways to grind out wins.
This team's, you know, they're not going to score 50 on everybody, but they've got a defense
that's going to be able to allow them to grind out wins.
Arkansas did not let them grind this one out.
Arkansas kept coming, mounted a couple of really long drives,
and then put it in there right at the end with Taylor Greene out.
Yeah, the thing that's disappointing, if you're looking at this from a Tennessee angle,
is that this was supposed to be a team that was able to win in multiple ways.
I mean, you're supposed to win through the air was able to win in multiple ways, right?
I mean, you're supposed to win through the air in a shootout,
a defensive struggle, all the different ways that a team could be built
with their defensive line, their running backs, their star quarterback.
They just were not able to get anything going.
And I liked the whole idea Josh Heupel had of letting Arkansas score there
at the end.
I thought that gave them enough time down five to go up back and get it.
But even the clock management on the final play,
they had some mistakes where Nico fumbled or muffed a snap
and Dylan Sampson had to catch it and run with it.
And that wasted 30 seconds.
They could have scored at the end had they been in sync.
And it just didn't look like for four quarters
that Tennessee was able to really feel what they wanted to do.
And I think you have to give some credit to Arkansas for that, because going on the road in that environment, that's a very tough team.
We've seen them all year, Andy, playing big time football against some really tough opponents and hanging in there physically.
I didn't love the 14 point spread in this physically. I didn't love the 14-point spread in this one. I thought that this could be
a dangerous spot, especially considering the fact they hadn't played for two weeks. And I didn't
think that Tennessee was going to lose this game by any stretch of the imagination. But Arkansas
is a lot better than people think they are. Yeah, they are. And Travis Williams did a fantastic job.
The defensive coordinator, you saw him on the show about a month and a half ago. He loves to dial the pressure and he had
Nico guessing tonight and had Nico struggling. I thought
the last play was emblematic. Look, you realize this is a guy
who is in his second year. This is his first year as a starter. He doesn't have
that many starts under his belt. Things like
not realizing you have to throw the ball.
Cause time's up.
I guess as he got near the line of scrimmage,
I I'm standing in the Florida press box and like screaming at the TV.
Like you can't,
you can't do that.
Like you're going to cross the line of scrimmage.
What are you doing?
And he crosses the line of scrimmage.
He goes out of bounds and that's the game.
It's over.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or have the frame of mind to drop a play where you throw it immediately, you know, and goes out of bounds, and that's the game. It's over. Yeah, or have the frame of mind to draw up a play
where you throw it immediately and try to get to the marker.
I mean, sorry, to the end zone as quickly as possible.
But the second he rolled out, I was like, this is bad news.
And part of that's an experience, but also part of that, too,
is just terrible clock management from the coaching staff
all the way down the field.
Yeah, and so the question for Tennessee is, is this offense as good as we thought it was?
It feels like their defense is the one that's kind of carrying them now.
So they're going to play Florida next week.
They obviously have to play Alabama and Georgia still.
Now, look, Alabama and Georgia have looked beatable as well.
They've been beaten.
But is Tennessee's offense going to be able to move the ball on those teams? Because it didn't move it
all that well against Oklahoma. It didn't
move it very well at all against Arkansas. So where's
the explosive 50-point-a-game type offense that we've
come to expect? Because if you put that with the defense, Tennessee can play.
You've got a team that can win the national title.
But if you are not that offense, if you are a, you know, 20 point a game, 25 point a game type offense that can hit 35 or 40 on a good night, then I don't know.
I don't know what happens. Yeah, and it's like after the Oklahoma game,
you kind of talk yourself into the fact that they knew Oklahoma
wasn't going to be able to move the football real well.
They had an opportunity to get up a few scores
and kind of make sure that the game went smoothly.
They didn't try anything extra tricky,
and just you could talk yourself into the fact that Hypo
could have taken his foot off the gas because he was back home and didn't want to do anything funny, all those things.
But it's like, are we sure that they're able to run it up?
And you look at Nico's ability and even that throw that he made on the final drive
where he made someone miss, rolled out all the way to the other side of the field,
got his body straight and threw a 40-yard pass downfield.
The physical traits and the ability is there.
But then you look at the box score the last few weeks, and it's like 158 yards, 160.
It's not like they're lighting it up.
So that said, I think Dylan Sampson is still one of the best running backs in college football.
I think he rushed for 160 in this game.
They do have enough playmaking ability, at least in the the backfield to take some pressure off and to score and it just it just seemed like again a team that couldn't get
anything going Sean in the chat my takeaway from today is that I want a Vandy versus Arkansas game
that would be so much fun those two teams because I mean think about it Ari has Arkansas played a
game that wasn't entertaining yet?
Oh, no. No, not at all. I mean, and I still can't get past the fact that they were able to get to the promised land without Taylor Green on the field.
Like that, to me, it's just, you know, I heard the announcers talking about how
Tennessee could play conservatively and try to play some field position because
they weren't going to be able to get a first down without Green, and then all of a sudden I look up and they're in the
red zone, you know, and then Tennessee's letting them score.
It's just, just a banana land day.
It is.
All right.
Where, where do we want to go next?
Sorry.
There are so many places.
Do we want to go to Minneapolis?
Sure.
We could do that, but I wanted to say one thing that we didn't say.
Okay.
If you were looking for an in-depth breakdown of Bama, it's in the podcast feed.
We did an instant reaction video for 30 minutes talking about it.
Just want to make sure that you don't think that we're just ignoring the Alabama of today.
We talk a lot about it.
It's not a video on the channel, and it's also in the podcast feed, wherever you get your podcasts.
Exactly.
Also, a detailed breakdown of Texas A&M in Missouri, which we are going to talk about a little more on this show.
But we also did that as a video on the On3Sports YouTube page and on the podcast feed. So if you're
looking for something on that, if you want more on that, we definitely talk about it. Of course,
we had no idea what was coming the rest of the day when we were talking about that.
But yeah, let us go to Minneapolis because this, I think like if you gave lincoln riley truth serum on the day
i'm assuming he was told hey we're working on a conference thing when he took the usc job but when
he fully found out that they were going to the big 10 i think if you gave him truth serum like his
deepest darkest fear was that he'd lose he'd be losing a game at Minnesota or Rutgers or Illinois.
And that really just takes the shine off the job.
Like it's one thing if you're losing to Oregon, if you're losing to Washington out West, maybe you lose to Oregon State on a Friday night or something weird happens in Pullman.
But going to Minneapolis and losing, going to Champaign and losing, that's the fear when you join the Big Ten.
It's that, and oh, by the way, you have to play Michigan
and you have to play Penn State, and eventually you're going to have to play
Ohio State, even though you don't have to play them this year.
This was the fear because if they can't beat Minnesota,
how's this going to go?
Yeah, it kind of goes into this notion, too, of overthinking the analysis a little bit.
It's like we're not that far removed from USC losing a game to a team that threw for 32 yards.
You know what I mean?
And Michigan is or was supposed to be a much better version of that.
So you would think that because they were in a four-quarter game
with a team that won the national title last year,
has some draft picks on defense, that, you know,
that was a pretty good sign that they would at least be able
to exist in games like this.
And the thing that is most surprising to me,
not even so much that Minnesota scored 24 points
or won the game in the final minute
by, you know, bully balling fourth and one from the one yard line, fourth and goal, I
should say.
It's that their skill position talent, like usually when Minnesota plays teams that are
situated with players like Zach Branch, you know, they can't cover those guys.
And to watch USC struggle to move the football for a large portion of that game.
You know, it's one thing to not be able to get a stop or to let a team like Minnesota run
effectively, but to not be able to get yours on offense is the thing that's most concerning to me.
It's like, I don't know. Darius Taylor was the best player on the field tonight.
So like USC in most of the, like you think in these games games you're going to have the best player at least 90% of the time.
Darius Taylor is the best player on the field.
That's not good.
And I just wonder when Penn State goes, now look, I say this, Ari, we're making assumptions again.
Well, if USC can't beat Minnesota, then they obviously can't beat Penn State penn state now that's not true penn state probably could go to usc and lose very
easily but i just you know i remember hearing lincoln riley at big 10 media days and he was
talking about and it says the things the thing i've said criticizing billy napier like you can't
be criticizing your roster that you inherited
in year three. And Lincoln Riley was saying, you know, I'm not a miracle worker. Look at what I
inherited. And I'm like, Oh God, this is, this is a man trying to manage our expectations.
And then they beat LSU. The Michigan game didn't go the way they wanted to, but I was like, okay,
it's still fine. He was managing our expectations. So now I'm looking at penn state i'm looking at rutgers
i'm looking at washington i'm looking at nebraska and going this could be a problem
yeah you know and i have some thoughts about usc's offensive limitations in this game
andy i don't know if we're finding out that miller moss might not be a worthy comparison
oh he's not better than i'm starting to think that that might be a worthy comparison. Oh, he's not better than Caleb.
I'm starting to think that that might be a possibility, but I'm looking at the box score right now,
and I'm seeing their leading receiver was Hudson with 54 yards
and Deuce Robinson, four catches for 39 yards,
Makai Lemon, 37 yards.
And I think one of those was like a 20-yard catch
on the last few plays of the game when they were playing off the ball.
It's like, how are we in a place right now where this team can't muster up
any explosiveness with these guys?
And Zach Branch, three catches for 10 yards,
that's what we're doing against Minnesota?
Like, you know, this is supposed to be a defensive issue.
And, you know, 24 points to Minnesota isn't a defensive clinic, but holding Minnesota 24 should be a win way more than 9 out of 10 times.
Roger in the chat paid $5 to say, Ari, I threw your CD out the school bus window a long time ago. I'm very sorry about that. Glad to see the success in your career.
I remember you, Roger.
And I don't remember what CD was.
I don't know.
But yeah, I remember.
I remember, bud.
Well, I'm happy that you're doing well.
And I'm also happy that you are successful in your own right.
If you're throwing five bones at me to remind me of a childhood trauma on a night that i've been uh awake for 13 hours but um yeah and ari's ari's slightly
traumatized too because remember the day lincoln riley took the usc job he and i made a bet
and i said usc will not make the playoff in lincoln riley's first three seasons and Ari said he would. And that first year we're sitting in Vegas, USC, Utah,
it's going fine for USC. And then Caleb Williams gets nicked up and all of a sudden the dam breaks,
Utah beats them. They don't make the four team. All right. Okay. They're not going to make the
14 the next year. They certainly didn't last year, but with the 12 team, I was thinking once
they beat LSU, I was like, eh, I might have to pay up for Ari here.
Nope.
Ari's paying me.
The good news for you,
Ari is that I am going to spend most of that money on a lavish dinner for
us.
So just be picking out the place.
Yeah.
It's going to be the seafood tower of all seafood towers.
We definitely get to see food tower.
No question,
but news for you,
you're going to come out in the out in the red on that one too.
But yeah, that's a tough break for me.
But that's the way the cookie crumbles.
And frankly speaking, even though I was a half a football away from cashing that bet in year one, I was wrong.
My thought process of what USC was going to be at this point and who they actually are are pretty night and day and there's no circumstance of conference or you know playoff expansion or anything else that kind of changes
the fact I thought that USC was going to turn into a west coast juggernaut and now I'm sitting
here you know three years under this talking about how they can't get a 60 yard receiver
against Minnesota and I just don't know where it all got away well and so that's there's another
big picture question to be asked here. I mean,
with Alabama, we were asking the big picture question of, okay, this means Nick Saban,
he's done. He's not coming back. You're, you're in a different world now.
Is Lincoln Riley a very different coach than what we thought he was going to be?
Yeah. Uh, I don't know if it's a styles makes fights career for him,
you know,
because in the big 12,
that might actually be the best place for the way that he runs his
program.
Now we always talk about Nick Saban's superpowers and his ability was to
adapt schematically and rules wise and recruiting wise and everything else
to make sure that he and
Alabama are on the cutting edge of every single major change that the sport has seen so you know
I don't know if I'm in a position where I would have without question said he was a top four coach
in America three years ago and have a lot of respect for what he's done with the quarterback position in his offensive scheme to just saying he stinks as a coach now.
Like, but I, and like, he seemed to have do,
have done the things Andy that we wanted him to do, you know,
make a change in coordinating, get more serious about practicing,
fix your defense, all the things that he had to do.
It's he seemed willing to do it maybe a year late, but he still did it.
And I just don't know, like, if this doesn't work,
maybe you have to go back to the well and get another dynamic quarterback
that can put up 50 points a game, which I'm assuming he's able to do
because that's what he does, and then combine it in two years
with this Danton-Lynn defense with guys that they recruited
and hope that they can put together a team that had last year's offense
with the team of this year's defense. I still think that that is within the realm of
possibility. But in terms of me thinking it was going to be
an 18-month process before they were just rivaling
Georgia and Alabama on the West Coast, if you would have had visions
or seen what I saw in my head when he got hired, I
saw complete and utter domination in recruiting on the West Coast.
I know what you saw, man.
It was glorious.
It's a house overlooking the Pacific.
We actually took the tour of Lincoln Riley's house when he bought it,
did a show from there, virtually, of course.
We would never actually show up up it's not like a dan
campbell thing uh but i would if he invited me over to that house i definitely would have shown up
oh i know you would have but he's not inviting you to his house we've said too many mean things
at this point on the podcast so i i just it's amazing to me because it seemed like one of the
reasons for leaving oklahoma was he didn't really want to go to the sec and i think going to the big 10 is essentially the same thing and so what do you
whatever he was trying to get away from he just got pushed right into and it's it's not going to
get them what they want and so i do wonder how that's going to go moving forward because
can he turn it into what they what they ultimately wanted now different ad than who hired jim cohen
is is the new ad so i i'm fascinated to see how that situation unfolds because there's no escape
route like there's no like lincoln riley's not being clamored for by the NFL teams
anymore. They don't want to go get him. I don't think there's a program at the same level of USC
that would, would want to hire him. And it's, and, and, and if there were, I'm not sure it's a place
he'd want to go because the same problems are going to follow you there too. Like if, whether
you're in the big Ten or the SEC,
either one, you're dealing with this.
Yeah, I mean, you're also talking about a,
I mean, like what you said,
like imagine the world that he signed up to go to.
California Dreaming and the Pac-12 where you're playing Arizona State, Arizona,
Washington State, Oregon State,
and you can get away with building your program the way he did
at Oklahoma, having a high-flying, sexy offense with really good West Coast players and win a lot
of games that way. I thought the blueprint for what Lincoln Riley's teams could look like or
would look like would be what it did in year one with Caleb with a marginally better defense,
and it would have mirrored a lot of what he did at Oklahoma. But that's just not the position that he's in right now,
and he's got to figure out a way to recruit the athletes that they need
on the defensive side of the ball,
make sure that this isn't a one-year blip of success
before it gets back to reverting to terrible defense,
and make sure you can hold on to a certain quarterback recruit
that might be making an eye for Indiana at this point.
So the thing that you – Indiana, a top-ten team, by the way, potentially. a certain quarterback recruit that might be making an eye for Indiana at this point. So, you know,
the thing that you,
Indiana,
a top 10 team,
by the way,
potentially Indiana,
the first bowl eligible team of this season.
That was the first team to hit six wins this season.
Uh,
if you had your,
your five and a half over ticket that I told you to get after we had Kirk
Cignetti on the show at big 10 media days,
uh,
you cash that today.
So there you go.
Let's remain in the Big Ten.
We'll talk about Indiana a little more.
Andy, can I hijack something for a second?
Yeah, go for it.
Hijack away.
I just don't want to know when you want to talk about Notre Dame
because Notre Dame had a pretty big come up today.
I'm not talking about just what we saw from the Mizzou game and the A&M game.
But now if USC stinks and they can't operate on the same field as Minnesota.
Which game are we losing this year?
I mean, I'm sorry, Notre Dame.
Army and Navy.
That was easy.
So we'll get to that.
We'll get to that part, too, because we got to talk about Army.
We got to talk about Navy and we got to talk about Notre Dame.
But first, Rick in the chat reminds us that number 10 Michigan got beat by the Washington Huskies today.
Yes, the favored Washington Huskies who covered the spread.
And this was a game that it felt like when Michigan made a quarterback switch.
So they went to Jack Tuttle.
Remember, Jack Tuttle started his career at Utah, then went to Indiana, then went to Michigan where he was the backup to
JJ McCarthy. He was hurt at the beginning of this year. That's why he was not really a factor in the
quarterback competition between Alex Orji and Davis Warren. But on Saturday night,
Sharon Moore said, okay, the Alex Orji thing is not working. We're going to Jack Tuttle.
For a little while, it worked.
They had enough of a passing game to open up their running game.
They took a lead, but then it all fell apart.
Yeah.
You know, I think that we kind of knew.
I mean, I didn't know.
Maybe it would have been interesting if Jack Tuttle would have turned out to be the man with the golden arm who helped save Michigan from one dimension.
But it didn't turn out that way.
I think we kind of were both on alert that Michigan was not done losing this year.
And, you know, this is no surprise to me at all.
So as Durr says in the chat, isigan about to go seven and five i mean i i think if things break
right for them they don't they can still potentially go nine and three they could go
eight and four but seven and five certainly in the realm of possibility uh ari this allows us
to get into our indiana conversation They play each other down the road.
What do we think the spread's going to be in that game?
Boy, I don't know.
I know this Ders fella.
He is a Michigan fan, and I'm happy he's here right now.
I think that it's going to be a rough year, though. That said, Michigan fans in general, this is the tradeoff for what you got last year.
Enjoy that trophy.
Polish it like Nick Saban used to do in the playoff commercials
and hope Sherron Moore can build it back up.
But I did write a column this week about Indiana
and basically was a quasi-apology for not considering them more.
And look, they are 6-0.
They won at Northwestern on saturday by 17 points and they
have a pretty interesting three-game stretch here with nebraska a team that got a pretty big win
against an undefeated rector's team on saturday uh washington which you know again showed a pulse
with the win over michigan and then michigan state michigan ohio state so they've got a pretty
interesting road ahead,
but there aren't a lot of teams on this schedule
that I don't think that they can beat.
And when I say a lot of teams, I think there's only one
that Indiana cannot beat, and that's Ohio State.
And even then, with what we saw today, I'm not willing to beat anybody.
Are you sure? Are you willing to go there?
I don't know.
But I think that Indiana...
I'm not willing to go there anymore.
I think Indiana, I would expect to beat Michigan at this point. Now, I don't know if
Michigan's offensive line will be able to maul Indiana. They haven't played a team that plays
as physically as Michigan does yet, but Indiana has better
skill talent. I want you to go back.
Rewind about 30 seconds. I want you to say that sentence
that you said again. The one that you probably never thought would pass your
lips, oh I don't know, any time in the last 30 years.
That I expect Indiana to beat Michigan? Yes.
That's how banana land this season is.
That here in the year of our Lord 2024
at the end of week six,
we're like, of course Indiana is supposed to be Michigan.
Why not?
Yeah, I mean, they have a great runway.
And, you know, for a minute there,
they weren't having the sexiest game against Northwestern.
And then they turned it on and won pretty comfortably.
So, you know, I think we're kind of at the point now, too,
where, you know, getting to 6-0 in a season like this
or in a system like this has to mean something, you know,
and we can play the they-haven't-played-anybody-yet game.
And, you know, honestly speaking,
Indiana doesn't have an amazing quality win.
You know, I think UCLA was pretty good,
but, you know, that team was not even functional
against Penn State on Saturday.
So I don't know where you would hang your hat on.
That's proof of concept.
If they beat Nebraska in Bloomington, we're feeling pretty good about it.
I think they have two weeks to prepare for that game too, right?
I believe so.
Nebraska beat Rutgers this week.
So Nebraska, we're on bowl eligibility watch for the Cornhuskers.
So this is high times.
This is big time for some schools that have been down.
Think about Vanderbilt.
Hadn't beat Alabama since 1984.
Indiana's bowl eligible.
Nebraska's one win away from bowl eligibility.
It's like the ugly ducklings have grown into beautiful swans,
and now the, I don't know, the queen bees.
I'm mixing my metaphors here,
but it wasn't a good day for Gretchen Wieners and that crew.
Yeah, and hand it to Nebraska for winning a one-possession game.
Now I understand they've been up by 14 the entire game
until Rutgers scored with like five minutes left,
but it still counts, right?
Like there wasn't a lot of game time opportunity
to mess up the one-possession lead there with five minutes left.
But, you know, I think if Indiana can host Nebraska in two weeks
and win there I think that would be a pretty impressive victory just because of the way that
Nebraska plays and you know we were talking a lot about Rutgers and you know how good we felt about
them coming into the week and that was a pretty good win for them Rutgers couldn't do anything
offensively despite having one of the best running backs in college football.
Nebraska won the game.
The goal line stand was awesome.
Yes.
It really was.
But I think that's going to be relevant.
I mean, I was paying attention to that game today.
I don't know if you were.
I was paying attention to Nebraska-Rutgers.
If Rutgers would have won that game, then we'd be having a Rutgers conversation right now, too.
Yeah.
It was in a bit of a lull in in the action uh because we were
the only other game with alabama vanderbilt was obviously dominating the conversation
but it wasn't over yet so we were still kind of waiting to see what would happen there uh this is
we will get we will get to the i we will get to it so we had roger in the chat who's a a childhood
nemesis of ari who threw a CD out the bus window.
And Ari can't remember which one.
Everybody else in the chat is trying to fill in the blank on what CD it was.
At the end of the show, in grab ass time, once we reach the hour mark, we will go down the definitive list and try to figure out what CD it was.
The thing that's so great about their guesses is that it's all right in the time period of CDs that I might have had in that era of my life.
Eiffel 65 made me laugh.
It's so perfect.
So we'll get to that.
But we have so much more that we need to talk about.
First of all, Cal's up on Miami 21-10 at halftime. So there's an entirely possible universe where much later tonight,
I get home, I call and wake you up, and we do this again.
Yeah, that's fine.
I'm not going to be woken up.
I'm going to be awake, Andy.
I got a lot of work to do tonight.
No clue how to rank these teams.
No clue how to project the bracket.
None.
Well, actually, can we go with the chalk, the two chalky games that did sort of reinforce the old world order?
Georgia beat Auburn 28-10.
It was never particularly close.
Well, I guess it was close for the first quarter and a half,
but Georgia pulls away.
It was 31-13.
I'm sorry.
They covered the spread.
That's what it was.
But they pull away, kind of a'm sorry. They covered the spread. That's what it was. But they they pull away.
Kind of a boa constrictor game for them.
I don't know that I learned a whole lot.
But.
At least Georgia looked more explosive offensively early.
They scored early, which they hadn't done most of the season.
And then, you know, they just control the game the rest of the way.
Yeah, that's that does seem to fit the bill of what you were anticipating.
What was the spread of this one again?
It was 24, right?
They covered it.
It was 23.
It was 23 and a half.
Yeah.
So they did not cover it.
It was kind of one Auburn covered.
I meant you were right about that.
That's exactly what I anticipated would happen. I thought that Georgia would win by a little bit more
but it was one of those games where it was a four-point game, I think, early in
the third quarter and then Georgia just took over the game and Auburn couldn't do
anything. You've seen that movie a hundred times with Georgia.
The other game that I think you're referring to is the ohio state iowa game um yes i did kirk ference agree
with your your scalding take from the other day that jeremiah smith's already the best receiver
in college football because i think he did i'm pretty sure he said that out of the game
in not so many words i did tweet that uh um the touchdown duel between Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith this year is about as electric as the McGuire-Sosa home run chase.
Like watching them, like you watch Jeremiah Smith who just catches one-handed.
Like you're looking at this picture here.
Like this is every week.
It's not like once in a while.
It's every single week.
And then Ryan Williams doing things with his body
that no person could ever imagine
doing naturally.
That's it. But listen here.
This game
went exactly the way that I thought it would.
Iowa did a good job of
dragging Ohio State down into
the depths of hell for a half.
And then, of course, what usually happens
when these two types of teams play
is the athletes start wearing down and big plays start happening
and Ohio State started playing a little bit more aggressively on defense
and then it turned into a blowout.
So that said, we have Oregon who's undefeated.
That's a game we haven't even talked about, the Friday night games.
In UNLV, Syracuse was one of the best games of the weekend if you didn't
watch it it was incredible i think that ohio state did exactly what i thought they're playing
oregon on saturday we're gonna find out a lot about both of those teams in a week yeah i can't
wait for that but it's so funny that this is the first time where I guess I obliquely mentioned it in the open. This is the first time we brought up next week. We're 48 minutes into the show. This is the first time we brought up next week. Ohio State plays Oregon. Texas plays Oklahoma. LSU plays Ole Miss. Penn State plays USC. These are all games that we were like, you know, we circled on the calendar.
That's the weekend that's going to be the greatest Saturday of all time.
We just lived through one of the greatest Saturdays of all time.
And we're still not, you're right.
Let's talk about the appetizer, the Friday night appetizer,
that UNLV-Syracuse game, because it was tremendous.
You know, Syracuse takes a lead.
UNLV comes back.
They trade punches and then
Syracuse scores a touchdown in overtime to win it after Comacord makes a just
absolutely nails throw to force yeah yeah and then they had that weird roughing the passer
penalty at the end which was either targeting or roughing the passer it would have extended overtime or at least given Syracuse a chance to kick a field goal to tie it.
That then moved the chains. Syracuse ended up taking the lead and winning the game on a
touchdown later on in that drive. But Hajmalik Williams, I think, is an electric thing to want.
He's an electric player. And I wanted to just take a moment to make two points about UNLV, Andy.
One is that in this conversation that we're always having about who the best
players in college football are,
Travis Hunter is always the top of the list,
but there is somebody in Las Vegas who is doing something every single week
that might not be in the public eye that needs to be represented on Heisman
lists.
And that's Ricky white,
the receiver there for the rebels.
And like he's blocking punts, he's making making catches he's the heart and soul of that team and I cannot be
more blown away by how good of a football player he is and it's important to note this team's
playoff run is not over with yet now we have not discussed Boise they just scored 60 points
and Ashton Gentry had like 12 rushes for 190 yards
and three scores or something crazy like that but let's like Ashton we'll get to the I'm going to
find the exact numbers but let's just say Ashton Gentry came into the game averaging 10.3 yards per
carry uh his average went up today that that's that's how good he was to say the average was the 63 yard touchdown run where
he broke,
I think three tackles along the way.
Um,
it's just unbelievable what he's doing,
but we're going to be getting UNLV Boise and in Vegas on Friday night in a
few weeks.
And then if they both do what I think they're capable of,
they might play again in the mountain championship game.
So,
but I'm saying like if,
if UNLV somehow wins out or wins the Mountain West beats Boise
and play somebody else or Boise again, they'll probably still be that 12 recipient.
So, um, I had a, well, here's, here's the, here's the gentee numbers, by the way, 13
carries 186 yards, three touchdowns, his. By the 63, you said the first touchdown?
Not even as long.
He had a 75-yarder later.
It's insane.
Yeah.
So we're going to have to be on group of five watch this year
because this stuff is still important.
And even when group of five teams lose,
they're still going to be in a mix for being the highest-rated G5 champ.
So I wrote a column about how fun UNLV was to watch
and how amazing that win was and everything.
And then they lost and I had to throw it in the trash.
But I'm going to take a few pieces of stuff from those thoughts
and I'm going to write a column this week about UNLV
because I think they deserve our attention.
They're an incredible team and it was a pleasure to watch them on Friday night.
Two other teams in the group of five that certainly deserve our attention
are the two that are sitting atop the American right now, Navy and Army. And we talked about this in the
mailbag show because we had a question about what happens if Navy and Army are the two teams in the
American championship game. How does that work? How does the Army Navy game work in terms of
selection for the playoff? And the way it would work is Army and Navy would play an on-campus
game that would be the American championship game the week before the actual Army-Navy game.
The actual Army-Navy game will not count toward playoff selection, but you could be in a situation
where that potential first meeting, the hypothetical first meeting, would be for a playoff berth.
You know, if both of them are undefeated,
which would mean both of them beat Notre Dame.
I don't know if they're both going to be undefeated,
but these two teams look amazing.
I just watched a lot of Navy Air Force today because obviously the moon slate,
there were not a ton of really close games
other than SMU,
which we should not throw out for the ACC championship,
by the way
smu was a good game they're back they're back to life let's talk you know navy's offense is is
really fun to watch it's it's kind of a mod like it's it's if you married the wing t and the triple
option together which is exactly what it is uh they hired mercer's offensive coordinator who came
in and he was a wing T guy.
And he sort of instead of just saying, this is my offense, I'm bringing this.
He said, OK, you guys have been running a triple option your whole life, you know, your whole time here.
We're going to meld some of these concepts together.
So you get these crazy motions into triple option plays and they can throw the ball to like if you get second and short, Navy's going deep on you.
Yeah, and it's like the same thing with Army too
where their quarterback only threw it five times,
and I think he had 150 yards.
It was like they don't throw it, air it out,
but when they pop you, they pop you.
And the thing that's tough about these teams, as you know,
is that if you're a team that's not prepared to defend their offense,
you cannot stop them, which is why you're seeing 30, 40, 50 points a game
that they're scoring here.
So the good news for Notre Dame is that they're familiar
with playing these teams as they do it very regularly.
But I don't know if your Notre Dame still is in trouble stance is they're playing the military academy.
So I'm not going to argue with that.
But what a world we live in that that's a statement.
Well, listen, that's one of the like the if you don't know why Notre Dame plays Navy, like you should educate yourself as a college football fan.
Notre Dame plays Navy because the Navy used
Notre Dame campus as a training facility during World War II. It essentially allowed Notre Dame
to stay open. There was a chance the school was going to have to close. Because they needed it
as a Naval training facility, it allowed the campus to stay open. It allowed the employees
to keep working. And Notre Dame continued to be what it is. And
they say as a thank you, they play Navy every year. And it's, it's a beautiful thing. It's not
going to be a beautiful thing for Notre Dame's defense and they got to play Drew Cronick's
offense. But I mean, it's, I'm, I'm so glad that it's still happening. And I think it's so cool.
And then army was the best team in college football when Notre Dame got blackballed by the members of the Western
Conference, which became the Big Ten. So Notre Dame went to play Army to show, hey, look, we
can't play Michigan anymore and we can't play those schools because Fielding Yost is blackballing us.
Then we're going to go play Army and show that we can play against the best. Like the great
Grantland-Risley, the beneath the blue the blue gray october sky the four horsemen road
again like that was an army notre dame game that was essentially the game that introduced the
forward pass to college football so it is river can you turn the rest of this explanation into
a black and white uh black and white filter make it make it a newsreel. Yeah, the boys from South Bend
were chucking it around today in the polo grounds.
Yeah.
But that's why those games happen.
The fact that those games are going
to be incredibly relevant
this year, I think
is so cool.
You mentioned, we got to talk about the Notre Dame
of it all. They didn't even play today,
but because of what Texas A&M did to Missouri,
that Notre Dame win in College Station now looks even better
because Texas A&M beat Arkansas last week.
That Notre Dame win in College Station looks even better.
They still have to win these games.
They got to beat Navy.
They probably have to beat Army too,
but their resume doesn't look that bad
even though they have that horrific loss
to Northern Illinois.
And the obvious overt road game
that is supposed to be dangerous at USC
at the end of the year
is not necessarily as daunting
as it might have felt previously.
Yeah.
And also, by the way, I'm just going to tell you this right now.
Notre Dame is probably going to be in my top 10 tomorrow
because who the hell else is going to be in there?
Somebody has to be.
Oh, here's a couple of teams that could be in your top 10.
Are we ready to put Ole Miss back in?
Because they went to South Carolina and whipped up on the Gamecocks.
That was a really impressive win.
It went exactly the way that I thought it would. I don't know if
I'm ready for that yet. We're going to have to see how many teams
I need still. We don't even know if we need to have an extra one with the way that this Cal
Miami game is going. The ranking of
these 10 is just a hodgepodge of nonsense and I'm just going to embrace
it. I'm just going to put teams where i feel like they deserve to be and people are going to go nuts and we're going to
move on to next week but this is this has got to be 10 times more difficult than i ever thought
this ever could be i am fully ready to project ohio state as the number one seed in the playoff
and for them to lose at organ next week fully Fully ready for that. Yeah, it could happen.
I wonder what the look ahead spread of that game is.
But, you know, it's funny because we have been circling October 12th on our calendar
for months and you're coming here and you're spending a few nights at the house and we're
going to be doing the show here next week in this room.
And it's just like this weekend that we just got done watching from our couches is probably
going to be the most revelatory weekend of the year.
Yeah, well, we say that.
Maybe not.
We don't know.
There's one.
There's asked if we could discuss the Dylan Stewart penalty.
Yes, please.
Let's discuss that.
That was a penalty in the Ole Miss South Carolina game.
Dylan Stewart s into Jackson Dart,
emptying the clip, as it were, gets penalized for that,
and then Ole Miss scores.
And then Jackson Dart makes fun of him on Twitter.
Took 100 shots and missed everyone.
That is the second or the first of two
brandishing a weapon impersonation penalties that I saw today.
Yeah, we had the sword one.
No, the sword.
He lifted his shirt up and looked down like he had.
Oh, that's what he had.
That's what.
Yeah, because when they cheat the sword, you see the DBs do that a lot.
They don't seem to care that much about that.
So, yeah, it's not a real weapon.
It's a sword.
What is this? The medieval times? Yeah yeah it was interesting because he lifted in it i mean
if i had abs like that i'd probably lift my shirt up a lot too but i know but he had and he had like
his play his play card was down i was like what what what are we supposed to be looking at here
sir i accidentally just flashed my uh nip on the on the screen there. Sorry about that.
That's all right.
We're going to get banned from YouTube now.
I'll send the email.
I'll get this show unbanned.
Don't worry.
All right.
One other chalky game that we have not mentioned because all this chaos was happening around it. But Clemson went into Tallahassee, beat Florida State.
Brock Glenn had a couple nice little moments. But Kate Klubnick, again, looking pretty good.
I don't think Clemson fans were entirely happy
with not completely blowing out the Seminoles, but look,
if I told you that was going to be the final score at the beginning of the year,
you'd be like, I'll take that. That's fine.
Now we're looking at four consecutive wins,
Wake Forest and Virginia next two games.
So they probably should be six and one heading into November.
And then they've got Louisville, which is supposedly a huge test in the ACC,
but not sure about that anymore after they just lost to SMU.
That's another conference. It's kind of all over the place.
I feel like, you know, if it's not, I mean,
we're two quarters away from Clemson being the top three seed again.
We are.
Now, look, I already moved them ahead of Miami.
I moved them ahead of Miami last week in the projection,
and it doesn't really matter if they wind up in the ACC championship game,
but here's the thing.
We're,
are we sure it's going to be Clemson and Miami or could it be Clemson and,
and the ponies?
Cause SMU went to Louisville and won like SMU has one loss and it is to BYU,
which by the way is leading the big 12 at the moment.
Yeah.
And you know,
you were a little bit worried about SMU at the beginning of the year
because that Nevada game in the beat in the first week of the season was a
very ugly game.
And they also have had some quarterback,
you know,
carousel stuff going on until they landed on Jennings and Jennings got hurt
temporarily and present stone came back into the game.
But it does seem like they're finding their groove to beat Florida State 42-16.
Obviously, the rivalry win against TCU, I believe the score was 66-42.
And then Louisville here, that's a pretty solid three wins in a row.
And, you know, this is now Louisville's second consecutive loss. Maybe the
sun is setting on that being a quality win for people, but
it is definitely a sign in the right direction. I think SMU
was 20-1 to win the ACC before the year started. They were anticipated
to have a really good team.
Stanford, Duke, Pitt, Boston College, Virginia, and Cal.
I mean, what are we looking at here?
Think about this.
Think about this.
I want to invent a time machine just so I can go back five years,
only five years, and find someone, anyone who likes college football,
and pull them aside and say, excuse me, sir, let me buy you a beer.
I'm going to tell you a little story.
In 2020, I know you're enjoying 2019,
and please do enjoy going outside,
enjoy being around other people,
because you're going to have to stop doing that for a little while.
But in 2024, Cal and SMU are going to play a game
at the end of the season that may determine who plays for the ACC championship.
Let that sink in.
Cal and SMU.
Yeah.
And I do want to, speaking of the new conference world,
but I wanted to take a step into the Big 12 for a minute
and give some flowers to a team that someone mentioned in the chat
that I've been thinking a lot about. I know who you're talking about, and I'm ready for it. Go.
Yeah, Iowa State scored 43 points on Baylor,
improved to 2-0 in Big 12 play, 5-0 on the year, and as this
Big 12 that's kind of wacky and all over the place is trying to figure out what it is,
you're looking at an Iowa State team here that now is looking
down at West
Virginia,
UCF,
Texas tech,
Kansas,
Cincinnati,
before ending the season against Utah and Kansas state.
Like this team has a really long runway to get to 10 and O and a very
exciting situation that is happening there in Ames.
And maybe it's the rise again of Matt Campbell's stardom into coaching
carousel stories.
But they're in a pretty good position to score 43 points against Baylor
and to control that game I thought was very impressive.
And it looks like this is a team that probably has to start to take
some consideration with BYU on who you want to project
as the Big 12 champion.
Can I just say, let us project every team that is currently undefeated in the Big 12 champion. Can I just say, let us project every team
that is currently undefeated in the Big 12?
Because I know when I do the bracket projection,
I always have who could just be a win-and-end conference champion.
I'm going to have every Big 12 team
that is currently undefeated in the league listed.
So that's Colorado, because they play Kansas State next week,
so we'll find out if they can stay undefeated.
It's also Iowa State and it's also West Virginia.
West Virginia has lost to Penn State and Pittsburgh.
They have not lost in Big 12 play. They went to Stillwater and beat
the living crap out of Oklahoma State today.
There's two other teams that are undefeated in Big 12 play as of right now,
and that's Arizona and Texas Tech, who are playing each other at the moment.
Texas Tech might also advance to 3-0 if they finish this game.
They're up 15-3 on U of A as midnight approaches here in central time.
Ari, we've definitely gone past the grab us first but i do want to i
do want to mention the game i went to tonight florida and ucf this could have been the absolute
nightmare scenario for florida fans absolute nightmare scenario losing to ucf in a season
that's already been declared a lost season but they didn't they came out and played really well
florida's defense stuffed stuffed UCF on a fourth
down early in the game, scored a touchdown off of that. And it really, that was kind of it.
Florida controlled the tempo the rest of the way. UCF's offense is, it's not pretty. They're so
slow. Like Florida's struggling to get lined up and UCF's just standing there waiting for Florida
to get lined up. They're like, okay, okay, take your time. Don't worry about us.
We'll wait for you.
Instead of just snapping the ball and letting the 240-pound quarterback run through them,
they just don't do that.
So it doesn't give me a lot of optimism for UCF going forward in the Big 12 either.
But for Florida, it was actually a really nice night.
It was a beautiful night in the swamp.
There was a little bit of a breeze.
I thought, okay, it's going to be a bunch of UCF fans. The Florida fans aren't going to show up. Nope, they came in droves. It was a beautiful night in the swamp. There's a little bit of a breeze. I thought, okay, it's going to be a bunch of UCF fans. The Florida fans are going to show up. Nope. They came in droves. It was a huge crowd, a sellout crowd. And it wasn't that they all sold their
tickets to UCF fans. Like they were there, they were loud. And it it's been seven years since
Tom Petty passed this week. And they started that tribute to him with the playing. I won't back down after where are the bowls of oval Florida. And it was probably the coolest version of that I've seen
in the games I've been coming to at Florida since they started doing it.
And they were just so happy. And it's like, they haven't been happy in a long time. So it was nice
to see them happy. And you can talk about what will happen next and what's probably still inevitable and what may happen next week.
Who knows?
But they were happy this week.
So enjoy that, Gators people.
You know, you haven't gotten to be happy very often.
So enjoy the moment of happiness there.
Your team looked good.
Team looked good.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So we'll see what's next because what do they always say uh being
humbled is only a week away but you know we'll see what you know what it looks like when they
go to tennessee andy uh yep as you were talking cal picked six uh miami's they're gonna be up 28
to 10 here so well i so i need to get i need to get out of this press box because i'm annoying
everybody who's trying to write their game story and then i need to get i need to get out of this press box because i'm annoying everybody
who's trying to write their game story and then i need to get home so that we can do our fourth
instant reaction show of the day if cal beats miami because i think we do need to do that and
texas tech arizona shaping up in a very interesting way as well so this is, I do appreciate me some ACC and Big 12 after dark.
Glad those things are here with us now.
But I did promise grab ass, and we're going to get grab ass.
