On today's episode of Andy and Ari on 3 presented by Polymarket, we redraft the SECQBs.
We never really did a top 10 ranking.
So Ari and I are just going to draft the first 10 SECQBs because I'm curious.
I want to know where Arch is going to land in this thing because I feel like it's not what it would have been preseason.
Plus, George Story the 3rd from Soonerscoop.com joins us.
He surveyed Oklahoma fans got over 13,000.
responses. How do they feel about Brent Venables? How do they feel about John
Mateer? How do they feel about the program as they get ready to play Texas next week?
Also, Texas A&M, they're going to have some new end zones. They don't tell us what they are,
but the internet is filled in the blanks. Plus, new starting quarterback at Colorado.
Does that give the Buffaloes a chance against Texas Tech? We'll talk about it all.
And today's Andy Ari on 3, presented by Polymarket.
We are sponsored by Polymarket, the world's largest prediction market.

Welcome to Andy and Arion 3 presented by Polymarket.
And Ari, we got to talk SEC quarterbacks because I think the pecking order has changed
significantly now that we've seen four games.
And we need to either rank them or have a draft.
I think we should have a draft.
Yeah, let's have the draft.
I think it's the perfect thing to do the week before Mississippi State.
plays Alabama.
Perfect.
Let's draft.
Okay, all right, we didn't do a top 10 SEC quarterbacks in the offseason.
That was assigned to Chris Lowe.
And so we're coming at this with fresh eyes.
Everybody did their top 10 QBs in each league.
I had to do the ACC.
You had to do the Big Ten.
We didn't do the SEC.
And I think that's the one league where our ranking now with four games of data
be very different than the preseason ranking.
So I'm excited to see that.
And we're not going to rank them.
We are going to draft them.
So we're going to have a little element of competition here.
Ari, would you like the first pick?
Should we randomized the podcasting to do rock paper scissors over the digital?
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
And then you're a rock paper scissors shoot person, right?
You're not one of those psychopass.
Okay.
Ready?
And best of three?
Best of three.
Rock paper scissors.
Shoot.
Let me say it.
Let me say it.
Okay.
Let me say any of all to it.
All right.
Rock,
paper, scissors, shoot.
I had scissors.
Sorry.
Okay.
You both had this.
Rock,
this is great.
scissors shoot.
All right,
Andy,
just go first.
This doesn't work.
Okay.
All right.
With the first pick in the draft.
Team Andy selects Trinidad Shamblis from Ole Miss.
Okay.
Well,
you know what,
man.
You,
you can have that.
Number one.
Say number one, yeah.
Yeah, number one, one, I think that, you know,
what's curious about this is that, you know,
things change very dramatically during the season.
I don't think that there's anybody on earth
that would probably push back at this.
But in terms of the way he was viewed in the hour after the LSU game
and how he was viewed the hour after the Florida game,
kind of shifted.
And, you know where you saw that shift?
I was physically present at the Florida game.
Yeah.
I'm still taking Trinidad Shameless because,
If you put Trinidad, like, if you traded quarterbacks between Ole Miss and Florida,
with Trinidad Shambliss playing quarterback for Florida, Florida,
Florida would have won 75 to 10.
So I'm not saying you made the wrong pick, but I thought it was interesting how much he changed
and even the Heisman poll from a week to week.
So, yeah, I mean, I still think that if you were taking anybody one, one in the SEC,
you'd have no choice to take Trinidad, but I was just making a point about, like,
perception and how things change.
Okay.
I'm excited that you went number one.
I made the point before the show that whoever went number one is probably going to win
because two and three could be interchangeable depending on who you root for.
But I'm taking Camario Taylor.
I mean, I don't know if that is too high or what you were thinking.
I don't think that's a hot take.
I almost took him one one.
Yeah.
You know, we're talking 83 of 120 for 100 or 1,192 yards.
But the thing that I think is best about that,
outside of the touchdown to interception 15 to 2 ratio is how much he has improved the profile
of the program he plays for.
It doesn't just feel like he is a really fun, cool player.
Like Mississippi State is a thing because he exists.
So, you know, I don't know how we're going to view this at the end of the draft or if he's
played long enough.
I think that part of this too is projecting forward.
That's the way I'm looking at it.
I don't know how you're looking at it.
But I think that he's already a top two.
quarterback in the SEC, and I wonder if by the end of the year, depending on how Mississippi
State season goes, if he ends up number one.
I think there's a really good chance.
And if he wins this weekend, I think most people would probably throw him up at number one.
And I wouldn't have a problem with that.
I wouldn't object to that at all.
I'm going to go with Keel and Russell at Alabama for my next pick.
They're playing each other this weekend.
And I do think we talked about this the other day that Camaro,
Taylor's rise and he's been such an incredible story. And then you have the side story of all the
people thinking that he might transfer and him saying, no, I'm not going to do that. It's obscuring
how good Keelan Russell is and how much he has upgraded Alabama. I think Alabama got a better
offensive line. The run game is certainly better. But Keelan Russell is the thing that is he, he has
severely upgraded that offense, which is crazy to say because they had a first round pick playing
quarterback last year.
Like, Ty Simpson wasn't bad.
This is,
Ty Simpson was great,
especially at this point last season.
But Keel and Russell adds so many,
it feels like different dimensions to this offense,
specifically how scared you have to be of what he can do if he takes off.
Yeah.
I love that so far that this draft has had three picks and two of the three have started
a combined like six games or eight games.
And there's a lot of projecting forward here.
with my second overall pick,
I'm going to reach back a little bit
and lean on what someone's already accomplished.
And I know that you and I were joking
before we started recording that we both have the same number four.
I'm very curious if we do,
but I'm going to go with Gunner Stockton.
Yes.
I think Gunner Stockton at number four is a steal.
And, you know, frankly,
even in this draft,
I wonder if he's been underappreciated a little bit.
Now, you know, they haven't played anybody good.
Their first game.
But we've seen Gunner Stockton.
and play good teams before.
And we've seen him perform.
We've seen him perform against Texas.
We've seen he was amazing in Neeland Stadium last year when they beat Tennessee.
He had, you know, he played against Ole Miss twice last year and was good in both those games.
It wasn't, wasn't his fault.
They lost in the playoff.
Gunner Stockton has been very good.
Yeah, he's got a 74% completion percentage so far this year, 52 of 70.
I think that part of the stats, you know, are playing against teams that can't defend Georgia.
but I am very curious about Gunner Stockton because I think that, you know,
there are a lot of people out there that just assume that Georgia is the favorite in the SEC
and that they have a chance of winning the national championship.
And I think given Kirby Smart's resume, that's a fair assumption.
But I also think that there are some people, I think me included,
who worry about Georgia's offense because of the past.
This year it looks a little bit different.
And I think a large part of that's because of Gunner Stockton.
And if your prediction is right and Georgia ultimately wins the national
championship. That was your offseason national championship pick. I think that the guy that I got here is
incredible value for being the fourth taken off the board. I would agree with that. But you also,
would you have taken him over Keelan? No, because you know, I'm obsessed with like how it looks.
So, you know, I think that Keelan has a chance to be a, like, I don't think Gunner, like, what is Gunner Stockton's
draft profile? Like, I don't even know the answer to that. But like Keelan has a chance to be
one one in the NFL draft.
And I don't know if Gunner's profile physically matches that.
But Keelan and Camaro do Trinidad does not, I mean, Gunner does not.
Yeah.
So there's also who cares what their draft stock is, pick the best college player.
Exactly.
So from that standpoint, like, I think I would take Stetson Bennett as a college football player
over Keel and Russell.
And they don't have the same.
So maybe I would have.
I don't know.
I knew when you had the first pick, who your first two picks were going to be.
So I didn't have to worry about that.
But I think that there's probably an argument that Gunner Stockton should have been
taken before him. But that would
be inconsistent with my number one overall
pick because I took potential in
what it looks like over production too.
So probably not. I probably would have taken
Keelan, but there's definitely an argument to be made that
he should have been taking in front of both of them.
Yeah, my next one is a limited
sample size guy as well, but
I think we've seen enough at this
point to say that he
fits very well in the offense that he's in
and he distributes the ball
to the playmakers exceptionally
well, which is most of the
job. And that is Aaron Philo from Florida. He's, he's been very consistent. 63 of 87, 917 yards,
seven touchdowns, two interceptions. He's not going to wow you with his arm,
but he gets the ball out exactly when he's supposed to. He doesn't always connect. There was a
throw early in the Ole Miss game to Vernel Brown the third that was a touchdown that he missed on,
but he almost always connects.
I mean, like when a guy is open, he hits him and he recognizes the guys are open before they come open.
And that's it's kind of half the battle there.
And I think, you know, a lot of teams struggle because their quarterback doesn't process as well as Aaron Fylo does.
I think Aaron Fylo, who has played for Buster Faulkner for three years now, I think very much understands what Florida's OC wants.
understands how this offense works,
understands how to get him in and out of stuff.
And so, yeah,
I'll take him with the fifth overall pick.
Just so you know,
you're not going to have to deal with this.
This is the hardest pick of the draft right here, mine.
I will point out,
we are now,
we're only going to 10.
We're not going to,
the guy's 11 through 16,
you know,
they're still trying to get better.
But we're only going to 10.
There's a name that has not been mentioned yet
that if this were like an NFL draft podcast
where the,
where the hosts don't watch college football.
One, they would be listening to this and going,
what are you talking about?
And they would not understand why a certain name hasn't been mentioned yet.
Yes.
And now is now the time to take the certain name.
Because I'm struggling with how much do you put on him
and how much do you pin on like the offensive game planning?
Like that to me is because I don't think he's getting back to me.
The offensive game planning from the play caller who is,
coordinated national championship offenses and high when he was the coordinator for sure yeah
it has never done that since as a head coach yeah that guy took him to the semis though okay yeah
yeah go ahead offense has sputtered since the beginning of sixth overall pick rie wasterman um
i'm going to overlook some bad picks this year uh i think sam levitt is the pick here
in terms of who i would probably take to elevate my team i know that he has thrown six in
receptions, three of which came
at a team that he shouldn't have thrown against the team that
he shouldn't thrown one with. But does
he also get credit for taking Arizona
State to the
playoff and pushing Texas
to overtime and becoming the
most valuable, highly
paid NIL prospect at his position?
Are we punting on
Sam Levitt here? Like, I'm not going to
do that. So, you know, I don't know
how this is going to age, but
I'm trying to visualize the graphic down
the line. And I feel like this pick
here gives me a real good chance.
Like I think you're going to win today,
but I wonder, I'm trying to win because I was in an unfortunate drafting position.
I'm trying to win in December.
I think this is the pick to do that.
So if we picked arch first, that would be rage bait.
Like that arch first in the graphic is rage bait.
Are we now to the point where if we don't pick him here, it's also rage bait?
I'm telling the truth.
I'm not trying to get clear.
and I know you're telling the truth and you're not trying to get clicks.
It's based on how you perceive these people have played and what they will do later on.
The question that I have about Arch, because like this is an arch segment, let's be honest.
We're drafting quarterbacks, but it is an arch segment.
The audience knows that.
They're smart.
So if this is an arch segment, how much do you take into account and credit him for the win against Ohio State?
Because I thought he played tremendously well in the fourth quarter.
I did too.
I thought that kind of took the shackles off of him.
And he was at his best.
And what happened when the shack,
who's putting the shackles on him?
Like, that's the thing that's, like, scary to me.
Well, the thing is, though, perhaps he should be good enough to not be shackled
by the offense of the guy who has coached Heisman finalists and Heisman winners before.
Yeah.
Like, I mean, we also just got done.
That's a number one.
The number one story on Sports Center was how Dallas Cowboys coach was talking about shackling deck press scy.
not too much over coaching him.
So, like, I don't know if that's, like, just unique to Texas.
But, like, if you were to start a college football team right now
and you got to draft your guys, is there a quarterback in the SEC that you would
trust or pick before Arch now?
Like, that's the decision you have to make.
After these other guys were off the board.
I mean, I honestly don't even know, like, 100% certainty that the last pick I took,
I would take ahead of him in terms of starting from scrap.
Then why didn't you take Arch?
I mean, because.
I took what Sam Levitt is surrounded by and what he's already done, but I don't know if that's
going to age well. So it's a matter of what you think. I don't know. It's not what he's surrounded by.
If you put Archett LSU and Sam at Texas, who would be better? I think Sam would be.
Okay. So you picked. You voted your conscience. Okay. With the seventh overall pick,
I'm taking Austin Simmons from Missouri. He's been doing it without Ahmad Hardy. You know,
you're supposed to be able to have a lot of.
of Mont Hardy.
Yeah.
And I think that would have changed a lot for this team, which, by the way, barely lost
in Starkville, which wouldn't sound real good last year, but right now is actually
not that bad of a problem.
Austin Simmons, completing 65.4% of his passes, 947 passing yards, averaging 8.9 yards
for attempt, 11 TD, zero interceptions.
He's been excellent for Missouri this year.
Yeah.
And this is a guy who was supposed to start for Ole Miss last year.
He gets hurt. Trinidad comes in. He never gets the job back. Understandable. Trinidad's awesome.
But Austin Simmons is a quality SEC starter too. He is. That's rage bait right there, pal.
I'm going to push back on that. I'm taking Archmanning. That's insane. Okay. There we go.
Are quarterbacks or wins the quarterback stat? No.
Mina Kheim says that. No, right? Isn't that her like tagline? Wins are not a quarterback stat?
And that's why I asked you, if you were conflicted between Arch Manning and Sam Levitt,
if you put Sam Levitt on Texas and Arch Manning on LSU, who's better?
The answer is Texas.
So that's why I asked you that.
Well, Texas is also the answer with Arch.
Would you?
But would you, okay, if you were coaching, but the thing is, if you were coaching Ole Miss,
you wouldn't take Arch Manning over Trinidad Chamblis.
If you were coaching Mississippi State, you wouldn't take him over Camaro Taylor.
If you're coaching Alabama, you wouldn't take him over Keel and Russell.
Is Arch Manning going to get a GM in the NFL fired?
I don't know.
I'm going to take him here.
I think he's got incredible physical tools
and the reason why I'm probably going to end up running
five miles at the end of the years
because I'm obsessed with those tools.
It's not computing to me
why it feels like this.
Can I give you an A, B comparison?
Sure.
Blind resume.
Quarterback A.
Oh, God, I know the answer already.
Has completed 73.
of 110 passes, 66.4%, 889 passing yards, 8.1 yards per attempt,
eight passing touchdowns for interceptions.
Quarterback B, 74 of 116, 63.8 completion percentage, 7.5 yards per attempt,
seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
Ari, who is quarterback A and who is quarterback B?
Quarterback A is final year Patrick Mahomes at Texas.
tech, right? I'm kidding. It's John Mateer and
Arch Manning. Like, I know that there are similar stats. But
John McTeer's numbers are actually better. I know. Well, John
Mathier also fumbles the ball backwards in the red zone.
Arch has, well, that's why he hasn't been picked yet. There's up, but there's other
things that go into play here and stats for, like, I get it. Listen, I'm watching the
games too. I wrote a column on on three that ran yesterday about how. So I
don't know if I 100% am on board with it's Arches fault. Yeah.
Right. So like, and I don't know, like, it sounds like,
you are. Like, you think that Steve Sarkesian is a great play caller.
I don't think it's all Arch's fall. I think I think Sark deserves some, some credits slash blame as well.
But I also think if you put Trinidad Shambliss at Texas that they are probably unbeatable.
But here's where I've aired the most with Arch, Andy, is that even if, like, I think that a lot of times my takes on him are misconstrued as me saying he is QB-1-1 in the NFL draft.
My thought process with him was he's toolsy.
He's big.
He should have a great ability.
Right.
You're thinking how their GMs think.
That's how they think.
You surround him with Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smothers
and Relique Brown and Ryan Wingo and Trevor Goosby
that like even if he were painfully average as a player,
that he would statistically have a better output than this.
So I'm actually like kind of confused
and I'm going to have to probably run up and down Las Vegas Boulevard.
as a result of this confusion.
But like,
I just thought that even if he were average, it would be better.
So, you know, and I get made fun of a lot.
So, I mean, I think that like here, though, like, it's an automatic pick.
Because there's nobody else in the conference that I'm taking.
I know Kenny Mitchie's out there and there some other guys out there.
There's two other guys, I think, that we haven't taken yet that are going to be taken.
You're on pick five, right?
This is my last pick.
Yeah.
This draft has gone as my big board is gone.
It is exactly what my big board was.
I am making a change, though, because I left this guy out because the advanced stats kind of hate him.
But I've watched him play.
His more traditional stats compared to the other quarterbacks are very comparable, if not better in some cases.
Kenny Minchie, Kentucky, I'm going to take him with my fifth pick.
876 passing yards.
69 of 101, 8.7 yards per attempt,
eight touchdowns, one interception.
I know the graphic says average per completion.
It's actually average per attempt.
He has been very good for Kentucky so far this year.
He's played Alabama and Texas A&M's defense already.
I think this guy could be very good,
and he's only made four starts.
Think about the names that haven't been taken
and think about how we were talking about these guys
a year ago.
Right now.
Here are the names that haven't been taken.
Marcel Reed, Lenora's Sellers, John Mathier, and Byron Brown even.
And Faison Brandon and then KJ at Arkansas.
Those ones that are left.
It's my final pick.
I got the, I get the board.
I am going to take Faison Brandon.
I like that one.
I think Faison, so sacks are also a quarterback staff.
They're not just an O line.
that.
I would love to see Faison Brandon against a Texas quality defense late in the season to see
if he gets sacked 10 times because I don't think he will.
I think as he gets more experience under his belt, he'll get better at getting rid of the
ball.
I think what happened Saturday was a combination of an elite defense, an elite pass rush,
and a freshman quarterback who's not been in a situation before.
So that's, I don't want to grade him too harshly on that.
Facing Colin Simmons in your first SEC game is not the easiest test.
And I thought that he looked.
Let's let's just call it what it is.
Tennessee had the ball down three with a chance of tie.
Well, if you want to, if you want to compare it, how about Arch in his first start against Ohio State last year?
Look bad, look bad, look bad.
When they needed something, he leads him down the field to score and they still had a chance.
That's exactly what happened to Faison Brandon.
on Saturday.
Yeah.
1,000 percent.
I didn't even think about that comparison, but you're right.
So I was impressed.
I know Tennessee fans are probably down because they didn't close it,
or they had a chance to pull off the upset and they didn't finish the game
the way they would have liked to because what would have made him?
Here's the thing I do wonder.
Like, what if Phazon Brandon led them down the field for a game-winning touchdown,
where would he have been drafted?
Like if you took the entire game, it changed the results of the final drive,
he might have been taken a little bit higher even
because that we would have been super impressed
and they would have beaten Texas
and all those different things.
This is a complete projection forward.
I don't think he was sensational against Texas,
but I thought he did well enough.
I love his tools and I wonder if as the season goes on,
I will get like a value phase on Brandon
comes into his own as an athletic freak
and maybe get like a Keel and Russell type pick late.
So, you know, that's my thought process.
But, you know, Byron Brown is interesting, I think.
You know.
Yeah, I think Byron Brown's right on the cusp here.
Have we completely given up on Lenora's sellers?
Like, I don't know.
I think, I mean, South Carolina may be pondering that.
Yeah.
Do they have to try something else?
I'm not kidding.
But we figured out where Arch went and he went, he went, what, number eight?
Number eight, yeah.
Which is where I thought he was going to go when I made the big board.
Yeah.
So it's fascinating.
But this is just evaluating from the games we've seen so far.
And it's not just the games this season.
It's obviously like with Sam Levitt,
you're giving him credit for what he's done in the past.
We're giving arch credit for what he's done in the past.
The quarterbacks who are veterans,
they get credit for the stuff they've done.
Yeah, it blows my mind that like Aaron Philo came off the board before him.
Like, are we sure that that's where we want to go with this?
Okay.
Well, which receiving core would you rather have?
would you rather have Cam Coleman
Ryan Wingo
No I'm talking about
No no no I'm asking you this
Ari
What would you rather
Because that's who Arch gets to throw to
Aaron Philo gets to throw to a good group
In Vernel Brown the 3rd and Dallas Wilson
I was talking about Sam Levin
Oh oh oh but I'm talking about Arch
Yeah I'm talking about Arch and Aaron
Philo
What I'm thinking is if you give Aaron Philo
Those receivers he's probably going to
play really well
because they're probably a notch better than the ones he's got,
and the ones he's got are really good.
Yeah, and I wonder how that's going to age,
because Florida's receivers are awesome.
They might end up being the best group in the conference
by the end of the season.
Yeah, I don't know if there's a huge downgrade there.
I mean, the thing is, like, you put the Texas receiver group
and the either one, the Texas receiver group
or the Florida receiver group with Trinidad,
you're winning the national championship.
Like, yeah.
Because he's got Duce Alexander,
but he doesn't have the depth of playmakers that those two offenses have.
Yeah.
Well, I'm happy we found the answer to our experiment,
and I wonder, and I don't know, River, when you make the graphic,
but I think instead of putting them side by side,
you should rank them one through 10 and just put our names on the side.
So I want people to be able to digest like where they were.
Does that make sense?
Because that also helped people comprehend it was a draft,
so they're not screaming at me for,
I can't believe you didn't want Camario Taylor.
I mean, no, I did.
Andy, can I ask you something before?
I know we have to go in a second.
But if you were drafting on my side of the board,
and I drafted identically to you,
would you have changed any of my picks in the order that I did it?
Like I said, the top eight were exactly how the big board I made
before the draft went.
The only thing that changed is I changed my number nine to Kenny Menchie,
because I kept thinking back
and I'm like,
I get the advanced stats,
don't like him,
but I've watched the guy.
Like, I'd take him.
I'd want him playing on my team.
Yeah.
And so that's all I changed.
Faison,
Brandon was my number 10 on the big board.
So every pick you made was exactly
where I had written them out
an hour before we did this.
Okay.
Yeah,
the only thing I think I would switch about yours,
I think I would have taken Arch before Simmons,
but that might age poorly too.
So we'll see.
I don't know.
I mean, we'll see.
Colin Sommis plays the Gators this weekend.
They get 39 to Auburn and 28 to Ole Miss.
Let's see what he does because he's been pretty sharp so far.
Yeah.
All right.
There we go.
So Ari, that means that we did leave two playoff QBs from last year off of Marcel Reed and John Mateer.
And I'm not sure either of the fan bases of those teams would argue with us at this point.
Yeah.
I thought about maybe taking one of them at the end.
because taking a person who's made three starts or four starts in his entire career over a guy who led his team to the playoff last year seems kind of unfair.
But then I thought about those fan bases and I'm like, they all want, they're like coaches fired because of these quarterbacks.
So I don't know.
The regression of both of them is kind of confusing to me, but I'm on high alert for some sort of rebound because like I don't think that this is their baseline level of play because we've seen them play higher at a higher.
It didn't mean that they were great last year,
but we've seen them play at a higher level
for a consistent period of time
and a way that they have been performing this year.
So we'll see how it goes.
But based on what we've seen for the first month of the season,
I'm very comfortable with the way that we just drafted those quarterbacks, Andy.
We'll talk more about Texas A&M later in the show.
But next, we'll find out exactly how Oklahoma fans feel about John Meteer.
George Storer, the Beat Rider, from Sooner Scoop,
put out a survey early this week.
More than 13,000 responses.
Oklahoma fans gave their true feelings on Brent Venables, on John Matier, on the state of the Sooners program.
We'll have George on next.
Before we talk to George Stoya from Sooner's Scoop, we got to tell you about game time.
Do you want to help open the stadium at Northwestern, the brand new Ryan Field when they play Penn State on Friday night?
Well, there are tickets on game time.
Or you could go see Alabama play Mississippi State.
We just draft the quarterbacks, Camaro Taylor and Keel and Russell.
went very high. You can get into that game for about $142.
That's a great, great deal.
New Ryan Field right there. I mentioned this on the show yesterday.
I actually went on game time again today to look up Celine Dion tickets in Paris,
because my wife has had me looking at those lately.
$450.50. That's actually not as bad as I was thinking.
$500. There's a few. But I don't know if it's, you know, in Europe ticket recent.
sale works differently, but Taylor Swift tickets were also somewhat reasonable considering how in
demand they were. So who knows? Maybe you want to go to Paris and Cecil and Dian. I know my wife does.
You can go to Game Time right now and get those tickets. Any sporting event, concert, comedy show,
you name it. They have tickets on Game Time. Use the code Staples for $20 off your first purchase.
Terms apply, of course. Download the GameTime app app or Deem code Staples for $20 off your first purchase.
Ari, let's talk Sooners with George.
We are joined now by George Story the Third of Soonerscoop.com.
That's on three's Oklahoma site.
And George, an ambitious project from you.
I don't know if you realized how ambitious it was when you put this survey out on Monday.
But in 24 hours, you receive 13,000 completed surveys, including 7,000 right.
You had the questions, yes, no, do this, do that.
but you also had a fill in anything you want to say right here,
blank at the end.
And you got over 7,000 of those.
Yeah.
Honestly, guys, you know, when I, I just thought of this idea because I was after the game
on, it was on Sunday afternoon.
I was sitting there reading through the replies on Twitter and on the crimson
corner over at Sooner's Scoop.
And people are angry.
People are pissed off in Oklahoma.
But I wanted the notes like, okay, like, what's the actual
pulse of the fan base because you have people that, you know, aren't online or aren't maybe as
vocal as the people are in my mentions. And I put that out thinking like, I'm sure I'll get,
you know, a few thousand, but to get 13,000 replies in less than 24 hours and then 7,000
written replies. And I was telling Andy before we got on here, I went through and read just about
all 7,000 or at least skim through all 7,000 comments, lots of profanity. Lots of profanity.
used. I think I put the stat out there. 473 variations of the F-bomb, you know, were used.
I can't remember. I have the stats pulled up here, but it's like, like, maybe 1,400 uses of
profanity in the comments. So people, we can get into some of the actual results, but that was
kind of the consensus in the comments was people are very pissed off.
So the most interesting stat, though, I thought, was 62.2% of 13,000 237 fans who fill out the survey,
62.2% do not want to move on from brand medables right now. And that's one of those where you have a,
I mean, that's a pretty representative sample size. And I'm glad you have that because I think if I just went by the comments I read under your stories and on your message board,
I would think that 80% of Oklahoma fans are ready to fire him.
Yeah, and that was maybe the most staggering results,
because we'll get to Mateer,
and everybody in Oklahoma does not like John Mateer right now.
But we'll get to that result in the second,
that the Venables one was surprised.
I figured it would be around 50%,
maybe 40% in terms of the support.
I thought more people would vote.
I had an option on there that it's too early in the season,
and I think that got like 19% of the vote.
And the one thing I will say about this guys, if they go and lose to Texas, these results will be, I think, totally different.
Yes, they'll be totally different.
Same with if they win. If they go and they beat Texas, they upset Texas in the Cotton Bowl in a week and a half.
I think that it could change their results.
I mean, if we did this every single week, it would be different.
But I was a little bit surprised with how many people, especially fresh off the Georgia game,
how many people were still in favor of Britain.
I went when I was reading through the comments.
And a lot of the people that voted to keep him basically said either the buyout's too big,
which we don't know what the buyout is yet.
They obviously signed him to this new extension and added two years to the deal.
You know, it's assumed that it's going to be, you know, somewhere in the $50 million range,
which is a lot of money.
And then the other one was, hey, we have a great defense.
Brent's a great guy.
He's built a great culture.
And all they really need to do is figure out quarterback and what's going on
with the offense. And that was the other part of this survey that I thought was interesting.
A lot of OU fans believe quarterbacks just not the only issue, but the biggest issue
that's holding this team back from playing at a higher level. And I think that that's ultimately
why, again, I think it was like 71.8 percent, you know, voted to move on from John Mateer
or to at least make a change at quarterback. And I think a lot of the people that voted to keep
vinnables were like, well, if he can just get a quarterback, then, you know,
he can figure this thing out.
But again, I think that if this is, if we did another survey, you know, October,
what is that, October 12th or whatever after the Texas game and they get blown out by Texas,
I think that 62% would drop drastically.
George, I've got a bunch of questions for you, but before we jump into it,
why don't you read all the data that you found?
Yeah, so I asked basically, would you like a change at these four things?
And the first one was quarterback, and the answer was 71.8% said yes.
They would like a change at quarterback.
13.2% no.
5% it's too early in the season.
Offensive coordinator, only 38.8% said yes.
26.5% said no, 34.7 too early.
Other offensive staff, so any sort of offensive staff changes, 76.9% said yes.
So that was a really high mark.
9.3% said no, 13.9% too early.
And then head coach, 18.4% said yes, change at head coach, 62.2%, like we mentioned earlier, said no.
And then 19.4% said it's too early in the season.
And then, you know, I broke it down season ticket holders, non-season ticket holders.
I actually thought the student response was interesting.
We had around 500 students answer it.
And it was interesting, guys, they were much higher on firing in Arbuckle, offensive coordinator,
or 41.2% versus quarterback. They were down 10%. They were only at 62.5% to change at quarterback,
which I don't know. That was somewhat interesting. Another one I'll just throw out there real quick.
I asked what's to blame for the offensive struggles. And I had a lot of people in the comments
wish I could have what made it like you could pick multiple because they want to say all of the
above on this. But 56.4% said quarterback play, 30.8% said offensive line scheme slash play
calling 10.3% and then a lack of playmakers just 2.4%.
George, I came out a sooner scoop.
We talked about these sooner during the offseason.
I know that you have your data and what people think, but the thing that's most confusing
to me about this situation is that we watched John Mateer play at a fairly high level,
and maybe we dismissed some of the bad play last year as dealing with injury and didn't realize
that maybe that's more close to who he is than we thought.
But what do you think is the number one reason for the regression in his play this year?
I wish I knew the answer, Ari.
I think it's currently confidence.
I think he is lacking a ton of confidence right now.
If you go and you watch him on tape, it felt like really since the Michigan game,
he's won, he's not seeing the field well, which was a critique of his a year ago,
but he still had moments where he's just ripping the ball and he's seeing it.
He knows where he wants to go and he makes a great throw.
And I do think John has a good amount of talent.
Like I think he's physically gifted as an athlete.
But this year, ever since the Michigan game, he has just not felt comfortable, I think, in the pocket.
I think he's been under pressure.
I think I saw a good friend Nick Kelly put out, like, who has faced the most pressure this year in the SEC or has had the most
pressure has given up. And I believe Oklahoma is, is dead last in the conference. Like, they're giving
up a ton of pressure right now up front, which is why, again, people are upset with the offensive
line. And I think it's, it's again, they've fallen back into the same trap that they were in last
year, guys, where they're relying on John Mateer to be the offense because they can't run the football.
And the whole goal this offseason was, hey, we're going to run the football and we're going to go
get all these other guys to help John Mateer because I think that they know, I think Brent Vinnibals,
Ben Arbuckle, Jim Nagy.
I think inside the Switzer Center,
they know John Mateer is not ever going to be a high-level,
you know, decision-maker processor at quarterback.
And so that's why they said,
we're going to go and do all this stuff.
We're going to run 12 personnel.
We're going to go get these tied-ins.
We're going to run the football,
and we're going to take them off of his shoulders.
Well, turns out they still can't run the football.
And so now it's back to being like,
well, our only hope is John Matier figuring it out.
And I think the reality is he just mentally cannot handle that right now.
And I don't know if he ever can.
I don't know if he can turn it around,
but it's very clear watching him.
He either has the yips or he's just losing confidence.
And I don't know, guys.
And I think he's healthy.
Like I know there was some talk,
I think, on the broadcast during the game that maybe his hand or something.
Like, I haven't heard any of that.
Like, I asked him directly, like, is his hand okay?
And it seems it is.
I just, I really don't have an answer.
And I'm not sure Oklahoma does either right now with John.
Well, and so like second quarter, you fumbles three times.
Yeah.
At what point do you try somebody else?
I mean, Whit Newbauer is the backup.
Yeah.
Would they not just try at some point?
Well, and that's so, and here's my argument, guys, with trying someone else.
It's not so much, like when they went down 28 to zero, the game's over.
And I wasn't sitting there saying, you got to put Whit Newbauer in to like bring you back from 28 to zero.
But I think for just John's mental sake, you should put somebody else in there, just give John a breather.
You know, it reminded me of, you know, everybody wants to, you know, think back to 2024 when Brent Vinnable's bench Jackson Arnold in the, you know, I think it was the fourth game of the year against Tennessee.
And Michael Hawkins came in and then they had to go back to Jackson Arnold.
And it was just a disaster.
And I do wonder if that's like something that's playing in Brent's mind is like, okay, that really did not go well in 24.
Let's just try and roll with John and see if he can get through.
it. But it reminded me back of, I think it was 20-20 in the OU Texas game. Lincoln Riley was the
head coach. And Spencer Rattler in the Cotton Bowl had fumbled like two or three times. And he took
him out for, I think, two possessions. And they put Tanner Mordecai in the game. And that settled
Spencer Rattler down. He came back, ended up playing a really good game. I think that they won
in like four overtimes. But that to me would have been the move I would have made is like, it's not
so much that Whitonubauer is going to come in and save Oklahoma season. I don't, I don't think that's
going to happen. I also don't think Bo Bentley, the true freshman, is capable of doing that either
guys. Like, I don't think either of those guys, their backups are going to be able and just like
get this team back into, you know, winning even just eight games. Like, I don't think they have the
ability. But the other element, too, is you just got to dance with the girl you brought to the dance.
I mean, like, what are you going to do? Like, I also think that benching somebody could like hurt
their confidence too. Like, it's like, if I don't trust you, get out of the game. Like, that's not
going to help them either. So, I mean, I know like, like, when you're in a situation,
like this that you want to find like what should have been done sometimes the reality of life is that
this situation sucks like and there's no fix for it so unless he he gets back to himself which i still
think is possible we watched him take the team to the playoff last year while injured so yeah but you know
i i never thought like well they should have benched him andy i think you know was more on the this is
terrible what's the point of not trying and i don't hate that but if you try something then you
play to win the games.
He can't play any worse, sorry.
Like, like, yeah.
Oh, no, you break his confidence.
It's broken.
If you listen to our show over the years, George, Andy and I always butt heads on,
because like I hated when they brought Archmanian.
All he worries about quarterback's feelings, and I feel like you should just try to win the game.
I worry about locker room and how someone's going to do and all those different things.
Well, here's the impact of like things that happen on the team.
Here's what, and this is what a lot of people said on the survey and what I think
some people are frustrated within the fan base is if Oklahoma had a linebacker that was playing
as bad as John Mateer is playing at quarterback, Brent Venables would not hesitate to pull that player
out of the game. Now, the positions are totally different. I get it. And I, you know, again,
I have no idea what they have in Whit Neubauer or Bo Bintley because we haven't seen them play.
Like, I just don't know, like what the backup situation is. Maybe those guys are just terrible.
And that's why they won't put them in the game. But I do think at some point in the locker room,
you could also have this issue where it's like the accountability part where, I mean,
let's just face it, guys.
The reason Oklahoma has lost two games is because of John Mateer.
Like that is, that is by far the biggest reason.
He throws the interception against Michigan that ends up, you know, that ends up costing them
the football game late in that game in the fourth quarter.
He has the three turnovers in the second quarter against Georgia and the game's over.
You look back to the college football playoff game last year.
They're up 17 to zero against Alabama.
and they're about to go into halftime up a touchdown and he throws a pick six.
When you absolutely cannot throw a pick six,
even in games last year, guys, in which they won,
the game in Knoxville, people probably don't remember this.
In Tennessee, they're up late in that game.
They're driving.
They just got to run the clock out.
John Mateer pulls the ball on an RPO and throws it across the middle.
It's intercepted, and Tennessee comes back and goes and scores and cuts it back down to like a four-point game.
Like they almost lost that game because John Mateer is throwing the ball with four minutes.
Like, this is, this has become a problem with Mateer where in these big moments, in these big games, even LSU last year at home, he threw two interceptions that kept LSU in that football game where now you're, you're just faced with the reality of this is probably just who John Mateer is.
And Oklahoma's in a spot where they say, you either have to live with that and just hope that he can stop turning the ball over.
And if he does, then you got a really good chance to win some football games.
But if he doesn't, then like, you do need to look at, okay, can we get somebody in there that just like, if Whitney Neubon,
can come in and just not turn the ball over, that's better than what they currently have right now.
So let's talk about the head coach, because I found it interesting the way people responded.
And I, the reading the bulk of the responses, I kind of get it.
Well, one, they like Venables as a person, which I always tell coaches.
Like, it doesn't matter if anybody likes you if you're 12 and 0, and it doesn't matter if
anybody likes you if you're 0 and 12.
It's when they're trying to make a, you know, a borderline razor's edge decision that it matters if they like you.
So this is certainly helping him.
The other part that point that people make is.
I like him too, by the way.
He's a good.
Everybody to.
Yeah.
So you need a great defense to win in the SEC.
And he's done that.
He's clearly done that.
And the prevailing belief is it's harder to build an effective defense than it is to build an effective offense, which I kind of agree with.
but I want to ask you this
and George,
I want to take you back to Oklahoma's previous coach
who is now,
whoa, he was good on one side of the ball and not the other.
He's still good on one side of the ball and not the other.
He's in the same boat basically as Venables in year five.
But it sounds like USC fans are ready to dump Lincoln Riley.
Whereas Oklahoma fans still a little bit behind Brent Venables,
is that just the personality piece or is that
because defenses are harder to get right.
I think it's probably a bit of both,
but I think the personality piece,
again, going through the comments,
I read the 7,000 comments,
even the people that voted to fire Vinnables
and thought that it was time to move on
would leave it with,
man, I really hope I'm wrong.
I want to root for this guy.
I like this guy.
He has done an awesome job of building the culture
and he's about all the right things.
He is very honest.
in his press availability, just talking about the shortcomings of this team or, you know,
even last year when they were on the high that they were of like, there's so much more to be done.
And the standard Oklahoma's winning championships, all of those things.
Like he says all the right things.
He does all the right things.
Like, I will say this too.
And I know this does not win football games, but like they don't have players getting arrested.
You know, what happened in Los Angeles this past weekend where they got a player who knocks another player out and he's celebrating,
that would never fly at Oklahoma.
Like, I think that people really do gravitate towards that here,
at least in this, like, state too, like, Oklahomaans, like,
in the faith part of it, too, like, and Brent's very faithful and, you know, all of that stuff.
Like, I think that people really genuinely want this guy to succeed.
And I think that's where a lot of this come from.
And then at the same time, I think that they know, guys, like, they were able to make
the college football playoff with a below average offense last year.
they have an unbelievable defense.
Their recruiting classes top 10 in the country right now.
We'll see if it stays there if they keep losing football games.
But like they've built something special on defense.
And if you fire Brent and it costs, you know, 50, 60 million dollars, whatever the buyout is, like you have to start completely from scratch.
And yes, we've seen, you know, programs like, like Florida, right, is doing great in year one under John Summerall.
Well, Oklahoma doesn't, you know, have the talent.
They're not going to be able to retain the talent or keep the talent or have the talent in the state that a state like
Florida does that John Somerol can take over and just fix a lot of their issues.
So you'd be totally starting over.
And I think that scares a lot of you fans.
Hold on.
Before you go too far, I'll point out, like, the two biggest retention targets for John
Summer.
Neither of them are Florida.
Yeah, Jaden Ball is from Georgia and Jaden Woods is from Kansas.
So like, it's not as hard as you think.
Do you know what I actually think is the most interesting dynamic of this whole thing, George?
George. So, George, a lot of this is getting put on the quarterback, right? Some you had offensive lines, some you had a very small percentage of offensive playmakers. But when you are looking at the way that Oklahoma is constructed and when you have issues, how much do the fans perceive that it's Brett Menable's fault and how much do you perceive it being the GM that's supposed to save you from a personnel deficiency? And I know that he didn't have anything to do.
with John Mateer coming. He came after. How do you analyze when Oklahoma is misfiring how to
foot the blame and who gets it? Yeah, I think, and, you know, Jim Maggie did also decide to keep
John Mateer. I mean, he didn't go get him in the portal. He wasn't hired yet, but after last season,
they could have said, hey, we're going to move on. You know, I think that the hope, though, was that,
okay, he was injured, you know, the same thing that we've already talked about. But I can tell you that
I think OU fans aren't out on Jim Nagy yet.
You know, he's only been here a year and a half.
I still think the portal class he got was pretty good when you look at it.
And the guys, I mean, Trell Harris, he's hurt right now, you know, but he was awesome before
he got hurt.
Rocky Beers was an amazing get in the transfer portal.
I mean, he's been fantastic for Oklahoma, Bishop Thomas, defensive tackle.
Like, they have some good players that have helped them in the portal.
I think it's more so people now saying, why did Brent Vinnibals hire, you know, Ben Arbuckle
and believe in John Mateer, which is always revisionist history, because you look back and it was
celebrated as like a really good hire, young hotshot offensive coordinator. You go and get a quarterback who
led the FBS in touchdowns a year before. I think what we're finding out is that some of that
success was because they were at Washington State and some of the opponents that they played.
And I still think Ben Arbuck is a good play caller. Can he be a good play caller in, you know,
the SEC? I don't know. I don't know if he also meshes what Brent actually wants to do now,
which is run the football.
Like he's historically not,
his offense have not been great running football teams.
So I think that that's what's hard.
The other part I'll tell you this, guys,
there's a lot of people upset at OU with the administration
and this extension that they gave Brent as well as, you know,
how are they going to move forward?
Like who's going to have to hold Brent's hand
if they have to go out and make another offensive coordinator higher?
And I think there's some frustration within the,
some frustration within the fan base with, you know, Joe Castiglione, who was the former athletic
director who, from what I understand, had nothing to do with this extension that Brent got right before
the season, Roger Denny, a new ID. I was going to say, does Roger have anything to do with it either?
Because it seemed to come quickly after he was hired. Not really. And I think that that's where
people are starting to figure this out, where, look, Joe Castiglione wasn't making a lot of
decisions towards the end of his tenure, from what I understand at Oklahoma. And this came from,
Joe Harris, the president, Randall Stevenson, the former CEO of AT&T, who helped do the search for
Jim Nagy. Like, I think that this extension has people wondering what's going on behind the scenes
and the administration in terms of the football program and maybe getting too involved with these
things. Because, again, like, the extension at the time when they signed it, I was like,
okay, well, like, we all thought, oh, you was going to have a great season. So I understood it from that
aspect. Now it's like, well, that was really stupid, obviously. And you've been.
guys talked about how stupid it was. And it's like, why, why did you do this? And now you've put yourself
in a hole where if you do want to move on for Brent Venables. And here is the number, guys. If,
if they had not given this extension to Brent before the season, the buyout for this year would be
26.2 million. That's a whole hell of a lot different than 50 million plus. And I think that the
number on the poll that I, the survey that I put out, would probably be less than 62%. Because I do
think a large amount of the fan base is like, well, man, like, do we really want to spend 50 million?
It'd be even more than that because you're firing the whole staff to, and then you have
to go buy a whole new roster, go get a head coach, you've got to go get a good head coach,
you're going to have to pay. Like, you're talking about like an $80 million expense versus
literally what LSU just did, yeah, but LSU might be different.
Well, an LSU was able to go get Lane Kiffin. I don't think Oklahoma is going to getting a version
of Lane Kiffin. Now, if you can go get Bob Chesney, like this has been my theory, if you can go
get Bob Chesney at UCLA, pay whatever the money is.
Just go do that.
But I just, I don't think that's reality.
George, we had Gabe Eichard on the show after the Michigan loss.
And he was talking about visiting Oklahoma fall camp and how he saw some concepts
and things offensively in camp that weren't on the field against Michigan.
And it seems like there was this like debate online, almost conspiracy theory,
of like, you know, who's actually in charge here, who's calling the plays or not calling the
plays, but who's designing the offense? Why do they keep all their air? Like, is there a struggle
between running the offense that we've seen and Ben Arbuckle running a true air raid? Like, do you
think that there's like any battering of heads behind the scenes when it comes to like cohesion in how
they view the offensive philosophy? I think there probably has to be at this point. And I think that
what happened was they went to, so if you went and watched the Utep game, which I don't know if
you guys watched it was a blowout but they came out and they ran i think it was like 70 percent of
their plays and 12 personnel they were running play action john materially threw the ball 17 times he was
rolling out they were doing a lot of different stuff easy reads like i think they only ran one rpo the
entire game and john read it wrong in that game and so you're like but you were like okay like
this is this is what you can do like john meteer's a game manager you're going to run the football
you're going to be in these 12 personnel you're going to do play action which john has statistically is throwing
a lot better out of play action, making better decisions, guys are open. And then they went to Michigan
and it was like they were in a totally different offense. It's like they reverted back to what they did
a year ago. And it was almost like they panicked. And they were like, okay, this isn't working early in
the Michigan game. And so they went back to what they kind of did last year and trying to spread
it out. And John's throwing the ball and all this stuff. And then the New Mexico game was, I thought
the New Mexico game plan was the worst. Like it was like they tried to do this mix. And
They didn't really know what they wanted to be.
They couldn't run the football against New Mexico.
And New Mexico stacking the box and forcing John Mateo to throw
and he's throwing interceptions, you know, in the first play of the game.
And like, it was a disaster.
And then I think what happened, guys, is they went back after the New Mexico game.
And Brent said, you know what?
Run what you want to run.
Go full air raid, spread it out.
And like, that was how you had to attack Georgia because Oklahoma can't block anybody.
They were never going to run the ball on Saturday.
And I actually thought it was a good game plan.
Like, they were moving the ball.
Like, their best drive of the season, guys.
was that one where John Materan's up fumbling on the one-yard line and Georgia runs it back.
That's the best drive they've put together offensively the entire year other than the U-TEP game.
So I think that there is Ari some of that back and forth where I think Brent wants to run the football,
but now they're realizing we can't do that.
And they're saying, okay, I guess we'll just have to run this air raid off and spread it out
and throw the ball 30, 40 times a game, which is such a huge risk because if you're throwing,
that means more times for John Matterer to turn it over.
I brought out a theory, George, that I think I know who Brent Venables might be.
And you're going to see him on the other sideline next week.
And I find that very interesting.
He's Florida, Brent, he's Florida Will Mustamp, basically.
Yeah.
Where you can have good years.
You have elite defenses the entire time.
Can't quite figure out the offense.
And I just think it's wild that actual Will Must champ may have a hand.
in whatever happens to Brett Venables.
Yeah.
I think it's a great compare.
You texted me that, Andy.
I think it's a great comparison.
I'd have to look up.
I don't remember what MuchChamp did, like, win-loss record.
He was 4-8.
So he was 11 and 1 in 2012.
That was his third year there.
It was 4-8 in 2013.
Now, that was one when they had multiple quarterback injuries.
They were on basically a third-string quarterback.
But they had elite, elite defense and historically bad offense.
And it was like it devolved into like the defense just wanted to kick the offensive players' asses in the locker room.
Like it was that bad.
I also think that historically too, Andy, doesn't, wouldn't you say that Oklahoma's tolerance level for bad seasons is even like.
Oh, much lower.
Less because much lower than Florida.
The second, there's the second most consistent program in the history of college football Oklahoma is.
I mean, they don't tolerate mediocrity at all.
Yeah.
What do you guys think?
And this is just me wondering, and I don't know this to be fact,
but you look at this three years in a row now for Oklahoma.
They have quarterback issues where it feels like their quarterbacks are struggling with confidence or seeing the field.
Is it like I've been trying to figure this out.
You know what it is?
It's all the free queso.
Only place in the world where you get free queso at every Mexican restaurant you go to is that
true is greater Oklahoma City.
And Norman is essentially a suburb of Oklahoma City.
Is that true?
Yeah, Taramaharas.
Oh, Tarumara's.
But it's spread throughout the region.
Like, you go into a Mexican restaurant there.
The setup includes queso, which you have to pay for everywhere else.
We need to do a regionality food quirks segment at some point.
Because I love that Salt Lake City has like a strangle hold on fry sauce.
Like, why isn't that not a thing everywhere?
Like, I didn't know that about it.
It's just mayonnaise and it sucks.
Well, no, I mean, I'm just saying like, it's a very thing.
very good. Fry sauce is objectively
delicious, regardless of your take on mayonnaise. Yeah.
And the fact that even if you don't like it,
why isn't it served everywhere
for people who do? Like, what are other
geographical... Free Koso.
But the thing is, does Free Koso
cripple quarterbacks mentally?
Like, you know who loved Tar Humars? You know who didn't get crippled
by Free Koso? Baker Mayfield.
Yeah. You know who hates Mexican food is Kyler Murray.
Does he really? I didn't know that.
No, I'm kidding.
It's like the thing that's funny about Oklahoma to me, more than anything, George,
in like, they used to be like the hallmark of successful offense.
Yeah.
Like their program's brand was explosive offense.
Well, but there has been a defensive-minded head coach at Oklahoma before who had to make
a very difficult decision to part ways with his offensive coordinator.
He brought in a new guy who was young and had some good ideas.
And it worked for them.
That was when Bob Stoops had to fire Josh Hypo.
and hired Lincoln Riley.
Like, yeah.
And this has happened before.
Yeah.
And everybody here wants to compare it to 2024.
And I get why there's a lot of comparisons.
I compare it to 2014.
Yes.
I think it's a better.
Because I think that, and it goes back to Ari's point of like, is there some
budding heads?
Because if you remember about that 2014 season, at least Oklahomaans that, that remember
that there was a behind the scenes a lot of talk of Bob Stoops wanted to run a certain
type of offense and Josh Hepple did not want to run that offense and that it did not mesh well.
And there was a lot of reasons for that that I don't remember. I mean, I was in high school at that
time. But like that was the narrative. And I wonder if that's what's happening here. But what
what makes it so damning guys is Brick could have gone and hired anybody. You know, the talk here was
that he could have hired Joe Craddick who was at Tulane at the time with Darian Minta was a huge
candidate. Buster Faulkner was a candidate. Well, that would have been the one to hire since
Buster Falkner. God, I really really really worse.
game, no. It's like, oh, look at all these good
player or coaches in current positions
that we could have had back then. It's like
also, like everybody who's ever been
divorced could have picked someone else, but that's not
the way that life works. You know, like, I mean,
I don't know. It just, yes,
he could have, you know,
I could have bought Tesla stock when I was 13 years old. I didn't
do that. Yeah. Would you guys, would you guys
have? Would you guys trust
Brent to make the next offensive coordinator hire?
Okay, this is where I
diverge from the people who
responded to your survey because I think fans in large part do not understand how things work
because a lot of them say well just don't let him make the OC hire have someone else make it
no if if you don't want your head coach making the OC hire you don't want that person you don't
want the head coach yeah you've made the decision for yourself so but that that that that's the
problem so you know and and again this is where the must champ comparison comes back you know Charlie Wise
Brent P's curd Roper.
Those are his three OCs at Florida
for those who don't know.
You know, like, in college football sometimes,
somebody will make a hire or a program
will make a hire.
And everybody would be like, what the hell are you doing?
Like, in the moment, like, you know
there's something off about it.
When Oklahoma hired Ben Arbuckle,
it was universally from everybody
praised.
Celebrated and championed.
So to go back in time and say,
well, he should have hired someone else,
he made the best hire that information at the time.
No, I mean,
information told you Buster Faulkner was really good too.
But guys, I think context matters in this regard to.
They had historically the worst offense they've ever had at 2024,
and they fired only one person.
And I think that's the bigger thing.
And this is where him coming from Clemson is an issue,
because that is Dabo's problem.
Dabo's gone through three offensive coordinators.
yet the offensive position coaching staff has remained static.
And those are very important positions.
Like if you do not let your OC bring his O-line coach,
you've set him up to fail.
Like, correct.
Every single time you've set him up to fail.
And that's,
again, a big point.
And I put it in the survey results.
There were 7,000 comments.
1,300 of them mentioned Bill Beedembow by name.
And that's why the offensive staff changes percent
that was like 77.
percent that people wanted offensive staff changes.
They want a clean house.
And guys, my personal opinion, I think Ben Arbuckle is a pretty good play caller.
If you go and watch the film, they're a place to be made.
He's designing good play calls and plays that should be executed at a high level.
And some of that's the quarterback's problem or the offensive line.
I don't know.
But looking back at it, it's not that he made the wrong hire of Ben Arbuckle.
I think that they should have cleaned house to completely on office and said, Ben,
bring whoever you want to bring.
How much does Oklahoma's offense that they run resemble what Washington State was doing when
Meteer was there?
I mean, that's the thing is it.
I think it actually looked like it more on Saturday against Georgia, kind of what they did.
But this whole thing that they talked about this offseason running 12 personnel.
Like the stats will tell you at Washington State, Ben Arbuckle ran 12 personnel less than 10% of
the time.
So he's not even running his offense.
Correct.
Correct.
And now I think he is.
And being blamed for it.
Well, but a good OC adjust to the players they have.
We'll bring a Buster Faulkner again.
The offense Buster Falkner ran growing up as a coach
didn't look like his Georgia Tech offense,
and his Georgia Tech offense didn't look anything like his Florida offense.
So you got to be able to adjust.
But I wouldn't buy a Ferrari to only drive in school zones either.
You know what I would buy is good offensive linemen
and good offensive line coaching,
because if you can block, you can run any offense you want.
And Oklahoma's biggest problem is they can't block.
You don't buy running shoes for your wedding attire.
Well, Ari, do you, you're going to be buying some running shoes when ours doesn't go to New York.
Ari, Ari, and you know, you know Kevin Wilson, were you, were you covering Ohio State when Kevin Wilson was there?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you tell me, if you don't watch what, what, yeah, great dude.
They elevated him.
They gave him half a million dollar raise this off season and promoted him to assistant head coach for the offense or something like that.
It's his title.
I think his fingerprints are all over this offense.
And his offense is different than what Ben Arbos.
Buckel's offense is.
And not to say, I think Ben signed up for this.
I think Ben in the office season was like, I agree.
We got to figure out how to run the football.
But it's clear like it's almost like there's too many cooks in the kitchen in terms of
what they want their offensive identity to be.
Yeah, because Kevin Wilson has always been like smash mouth spread.
Yeah.
Like spread it out, but smash mouth.
So like, do you think that there's some complimentary elements to what Ben Arbuckle wants to do.
But it's also like if you're making a Mexican dish that isn't spicy, you don't want to
go hire somebody who specializes in Creole to come in and change your Mexican dish.
Like, they're two different people.
Yeah.
And Kevin Wilson's entire career has kind of been like this, where he's been one of a few guys.
And I don't know that his philosophies have always meshed with the people.
That's not true.
When he was one of one guy, he was awesome at Oklahoma.
He was in San Bradford won the Heisman.
Yeah, yeah.
I would think Oklahoma fans remember that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And that's what was so funny because like you're like, you remember what he was like in Ohio
saying, like, well, do you remember what he was like in Oklahoma?
Like, it was awesome.
I remember what he was like.
at Northwestern where they basically revolutionized offensive football where they played Michigan in
2000. Urban Myers saw the game as like, that's what I want to be. And when I grow up. So yeah,
it's going to be fascinating to watch, George. I know you got to go get some free, free Koso,
because you're in the only place in the world that has it. It's crazy. It's like Ted's has it,
Tarah Maharas, Azteca here in Oklahoma City, which is one of our people. I know I've been to all of them.
And I'm marveling at it every time.
Every time.
It's kind of funny when you go to Chipotle or something, they're like, do you want guac?
And you're like, yeah.
And they're like, that's going to be extra.
It's like, I know.
Just charge me the $2 and give me the freaking block.
I mean, it's like, you know who never hears that about Koso, George Stoyeroy of the Third.
Thank you so much.
We love you, George.
Thanks, guys.
Ari.
Sometimes brands, schools.
people, do things on the internet.
And I don't know if they're doing it accidentally or on purpose.
I don't know if they're doing it for the engagement or because they didn't legitimately realize
this is a thing the internet will pounce on.
But Texas A&M, which plays Arkansas this weekend, at home,
sent out a tweet yesterday.
It says, stay tuned.
And it had pictures of both Kyle Field Inzones.
and you couldn't, it doesn't show you the design.
This is, the end zone is whited out,
and it says new end zone design loading.
Yeah.
The internet had a field day with this.
I saw that and went, oh, no, dog.
You're about to get cooked in the replies.
It's an interesting thought, Andy,
because if you know you're going to get cooked in the replies,
it still brings brand awareness.
So like the engagement that you get off the tweet makes it feel like it might be,
might be intentional, but there is a lot of things that happened over the years and continue to
happen where people genuinely just don't know how it's going to be perceived.
And part of this, you know, new initiative of the Andy and Ari show is that if something funny
happens on Twitter or if something funny happens elsewhere in the sport, we're going to,
we're going to show it to you.
Like, if the A&M wants to put themselves out there like this, we're not too big to bring you up.
We're going to show you.
It's hilarious.
Texas A&M, a 13.5 point favorite against Arkansas this week on Polly Market.
The Aggies losers of two in a row.
They're 0 and 2 in the SEC.
They've lost to Kentucky.
They got blown out by LSU.
The fan base is mad.
The fan base is restless.
I don't know that anything in the end zone is going to make them feel better about this.
I don't know what they're going to put in the end zone,
but I know what the Internet wants them to put in.
Could you even draw from memory what the last end zones look like?
Didn't it just say Agis in Texas A&M?
I think it just said Texas A&M and both of them, I thought.
Yeah, it's funny.
The last time we were there in person,
hardly anybody reached the end zone because it's the Miami,
Texas A&M playoff game.
Yeah, the end zones were not utilized in that game.
Right.
Goldposts you were utilized, but not the end zones.
Yeah.
So let's take them through it, Andy.
So the fake designs that people came up with before the reveal.
Jay Johnson enthusiast, which I'm assuming is an LSU fan.
man. Well, they went the simple route. They just put the word ass in both end zones.
That is, that's, that's, that's pretty good. And you cannot tweet this after losing two in a row.
You just can't. This is the penalty. Instantaneous. Yeah, Texas fans, LSU fans, they all had fun.
Elijah, this was a good. This is, this is good. I like this. So two very famous semi-recent and very recent losses.
by Texas A&M. One end zone says Kentucky, and it's blue and white. And the other one says
App State and it's black and gold. App State famously beat Texas A&M, I believe right after the
2022 recruiting class got there, that was their freshman year in 2022 and Jimbo Fisher.
And then Kentucky just beat him at home a couple weeks ago. So that's a tremendous one.
The App State game is kind of becoming a deep cut. I was surprised. I should have just gone
Kentucky LSU and been simple about it.
I think that one really hurt Texas A&M fans.
I think it cut them deep.
I think because they just signed that recruiting class.
They thought, okay, we're coming out of this.
This is, it's going to work.
This is why we hired Jimbo, all that.
And, you know, Chris Lowe had the great story last week on Mark Nabu, the starting center,
who is the last remaining member of that class who's playing significant snaps for Texas
A&M.
And it talked about wherever.
everybody else went, which is pretty much everywhere else.
Ari, there's a famous company in Texas that is beloved by Texans,
run by a fervent Texas A&M fan, Buckies.
So is this a potential Buckies field sponsorship?
It's potty time.
I didn't know that on Twitter.
I didn't know the connection to Buckies until right now.
I didn't. Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. Anthony on Twitter, Bucky's logo on one side, it's potty time because, of course,
Buckies has the cleanest bathrooms in the gas station game.
Yeah.
Of all the things about Buckees that can be celebrated, I think that the cleanliness of the
bathrooms is in the top tier.
We should.
Size of a Walmart, super clean bathrooms.
Individuals in the bathrooms, too, I might add.
Mm-hmm.
Yes.
Yes.
Hand sanitizer at every urine.
in case you're too lazy to go to the sink.
I don't even know the answer to that.
If you use hand sanitizer after using the restroom,
is that an effective way to walk?
What's the more effective way to wash your hands?
Well, presumably, you just touched your own skin
as long as you didn't get any splashback or anything.
So you're probably good with the hand sanitizer.
Yeah.
I just didn't know if like hand sanitizer was lazy or just as a set up
so you don't have to open a door.
You're not touching any door handles or anything.
Yeah.
It's a touchless experience.
and Buckees.
That's right.
So that's been your Buckees, Ed.
And of course, what happens in October to any space that gets abandoned?
It becomes a Spirit Halloween.
This is my favorite one.
Texas Todd, he's got to hook him emoji in his Twitter name.
So we know he's a Texas fan.
This is brilliant right here.
I saw already the other day,
because Spirit Halloween, they usually take over a big box store that's abandoned the place or maybe a part of a mall that's kind of down on its luck.
The other day I saw an old CVS that had become a Spirit Halloween.
And for some reason, that made me so sad.
Yeah, I mean, anytime anything is vacant, it doesn't matter if it's a big box store or if it's a stadium or anything.
You slap a Spirit Halloween logo on there and it hits every time.
So we are getting into that time of year, Andy, you know, October's right around the corner and that's hilarious.
we close with Mitch
with perhaps
this is the best one. This is the best one by far.
One end zone says still paying.
The other end zone says Jimbo $7.2 million a year.
So if you don't know your Jimbo Fisher buyout math,
we have we've turned Jimbo's into a unit of measurement.
One Jimbo equals $77 million worth of buyout.
USC if they fired Lincoln Riley would owe him two-thirds of a Jimbo.
That's how that works.
So here's how Jimbo's math actually broke out.
He was owed $19.2 million upon his firing.
So he was paid that.
And then every year until the contract was up, he would get $7.2 million.
So kudos to Mitch for actually having the accurate number.
accurate number.
Yeah.
Yeah.
This is college football's version of Bobby Biniya Day.
This is just,
this is amazing.
I don't know if the top of my head wins it up.
Are we getting close to it being up?
I don't think.
So 77 million.
We're bad at math podcast.
I'm about to do math live.
So basically you had 58 million remaining.
Yeah.
So that's eight years.
I would say eight years.
And so they paid out.
and he was fired in 23, so that's when he got the 19.
He got 7.2 million in 24, 7.2 and 25.
So 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 2001, they'll be done.
It's wild.
It's a wild scene there.
You could paint that in the end zone and you don't have to change it again for five years.
What do you think it's going to actually say?
Come again?
It's going to be like,
what do you think the end zone
will actually say?
Texas A&M, Aggies,
and it's just going to be
a different artwork.
In script or something like that?
Yeah, I'm sure,
I mean, it's got to be.
Will there be a corporate logo attached?
Oh, there's a picture.
See, it does say Texas A&M and both.
I was right.
That's the old one.
Yeah, in both of them.
Maybe they'll,
maybe they'll have Aggies in there now.
You know what they should say?
Go get them, eggs.
Go get them, eggs.
Somebody emailed me and goes,
Have you guys realized that Ari hasn't said go get a mags once on the show?
And maybe that's the reason why they suck this year?
I don't know.
We'll see what happens.
But one more from the depths of my stomach.
Go getemags.
I felt that in my plums.
Yeah.
You should.
See, now they're going to win.
Or maybe because they're playing Arkansas.
They're going to win.
But they're going to win.
Yeah.
Yeah, the hope is that regardless of my.
Or maybe you curse them and they're going to lose to Arkansas.
off.
Yeah, I mean, I guess you'll have to apply that.
However the game goes on Saturday, you can blame it on me.
Go get it.
Happens a lot in my life.
Yeah.
Good luck.
You're going to need it.
He's cursed you.
Ari, one more thing before we go.
We got news out of Boulder.
Former Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson, who replaced Julian Lewis last week against
Baylor in Colorado's loss to the Bears.
Isaac Wilson will be the starter for the Buffaloes when they host Texas Tech this weekend.
Are you at all surprised by the benching last week and the way this is going?
I was not surprised by the benching.
I thought he would be better.
I thought Julian Lewis would be better because if you watched them at the end of last season,
they were objectively terrible at the end of last season.
But when he came in for Caden Salter, it felt like he gave the offense a bit of a jolt.
and I thought he threw a better ball than Caden Salter,
but it seemed like watching them this year
that he was not really pushing the ball down field very much.
And in that Baylor game, they had to do something.
I know you worry about quarterback's feelings.
I don't.
I worry about winning games.
And when they replaced him in the Baylor game,
Isaac Wilson gave that offense a jolt,
got them somewhat back in the game.
They still ended up losing because they'd already dug themselves a hole.
but they did score points and move the ball when Isaac Wilson was in.
So I'll be interested to see what that looks like in the, you know, on the field.
Isaac Wilson is a tough dude, pretty willing runner, which I think in this offense,
we're talking about Brennan's Go-Go offense.
You do have to have a quarterback who's a willing runner.
If the quarterback's not a run threat, it makes you pretty easy to stop.
Some of the misdirection stuff doesn't work because there is some.
some blocking misdirection stuff
designed to fool
second level players based on
their keys.
And they don't worry about that if the quarterback's not a threat
to run. Yeah.
Man, I just
I don't know, I'm sure this probably happens
more often than not, but how often does a
quarterback who is invited to Media Day get
benched before October?
Like, that's just a very strange dynamic.
Did Jackson Arnold come to SEC
Me today?
I don't believe that he did.
I don't think he did because he was young.
I'm trying to think of an example of this
and I can't come up with one off the top of my head.
But I also have a terrible ability to recall things.
So, yeah, there may be somebody screaming at their stereo right now
or their phone.
Like, how do you guys not remember this guy?
But I really don't.
Yeah.
The thing that is just interesting to me,
and I know that this drives you crazy.
and I'm happy to do it again,
is that when you stake the image of your program on a player
or the image of what you would be able to do
that previous iterations of coaching staffs there
wouldn't have been able to do,
which is to go get a highly recruited quarterback to come to your school.
And then that doesn't work out.
And not only does it not work out,
it's punted on very quickly into the season.
And this isn't to say that he won't play again.
Maybe they're giving him a few week break
and they're going to give him another shot.
I don't know what the actual plan is.
But like that to me is a,
symptom that things are going very wrong.
So, because...
Well, yeah. But the thing is, like, just because the guy had a lot of stars next to his name and
he's being recruited doesn't mean he should get any extra time.
No.
They're paying him well. He's got a job to do.
And if he's not doing it, let somebody else try.
They're paying him well. He's got a job to do. He's brought the media day.
They're building the team around him is a miscategorization of his ability.
So, you know, that that's the other.
part of it. Maybe more teams will do that because you're paying highly rated prospects,
a lot of money and a lot of them aren't working out. But like, to me, Julian Lewis was the face
of Colorado football this year. So, you know, I don't know. I think you have to earn that on the
field. I don't think what you pay somebody creates that. Yeah. I just like I'm trying to think of like,
what are we excited about about this program at all? If you can't even get excited about the
quarterback who was wearing an AP to Media Day, like what is the thing? Like, what is the
thing about Colorado football right. It's
the AAP. You can't get over his watch
game. It is his watch game
that keeps you tethered to him. I'm inherently
jealous of it. I'm not going to lie to you.
I'm very jealous of it and I want
that. So it's
but
forget the watch comment for a second.
Answer the question because I can't.
What are Colorado
fans grasping onto? I was
excited after the Georgia Tech
game at the way they stopped the run. Because
I thought okay,
through Georgia Tech is going to try to run the ball on everybody.
They went out and got Justice Haynes.
Like,
Brent Key never has bad offensive lines.
And their front seven stood up and stuffed Georgia Tech over and over again.
I was like,
that's awesome.
Well, it turns out Georgia Tech's not real good.
Like, Georgia Tech just went to Stanford and lost.
They, they, maybe Buster Faulkner was everything at Georgia Tech.
Maybe he and Haynes King were the entirety of the secret sauce.
So now I'm not,
because they were horrific against Northwestern
and lifeless against Baylor until Isaac Wilson came in.
So I think you're grabbing on to Isaac Wilson for the moment.
Okay.
But big butt.
Now you've got to play the most athletic defense you're going to see the rest of the season in Texas.
Are you even grabbing on to Dion anymore?
That's the question.
If you're not grabbing on to Dion, then it's over.
Like, that's it.
Like, I don't know.
You know, I read the stat to you earlier in the week,
but I think that Carl Dorel was 3 and 13 in his last 16 games
during his Colorado tenure against Power 4 opponents,
and Dion is 3 and 13 in his last 16 games against Power 4 opponents.
And now they're benching their quarterback that was the...
We've been talking about Colorado for seven minutes now,
and this is the first time we've mentioned Dion Sanders' name.
because again, and this is what I wrote after the Georgia Tech game,
and in that case, it was reflecting positively on Dion,
it was, we are now going to judge him as a coach rather than as a phenomenon,
which is true.
I think he is definitely being judged as a coach now,
not for him being the best cornerback to ever play or, you know,
one of the most just vibrant dynamic athletes we've ever seen on the public stage.
Like, it's not that.
now we're just judging him based on his ability to coach a football team to build a program.
And after the Georgia Tech game, it was like, okay, they can stop the run and they can run in the ball.
Great.
And then based on the last two games we've seen, they can't seem to do either of those things anymore.
So, yeah.
Yeah.
You got a couple more chances.
This is a big chance right here because Texas Tech has not looked as dominant as they were last year.
Like, if this were the Texas Tech of last year,
it was blowing everybody out by 30 points,
this would, we wouldn't even be talking about this.
It wouldn't even matter who Colorado played quarterback.
Yeah.
How much more time does Dion Sanders a phenomenon by you
if the coach isn't passing the marks?
Like, where are we at with that?
Like, I don't even know.
Like, is Dion Sanders,
well, if this is a polymarket position,
would he be a favorite or an underdog
to be their coach next year?
I will go back to the same thing,
the Dion fans
pointed out over and over
to us, and I want to say correctly
when
they finished that first season,
it's still better than Carl O'Rell.
Is it?
And the second one, it was a lot better than Carl Lerle.
Oh, for sure.
Is it better now?
Yeah. Also, the thought, no, it's not.
And also the thought process
that every single coach that's hired
is directly compared to the last guy
and that's their bar.
Like, your bar,
Okay. Well, is it better than Mike McIntyre who did lead them to one Pact 12 division title?
I don't think it's better than any of them right now.
Right. Yeah. Yeah. That's that that's the point. So they have to this has to work.
And I know it's a it's kind of a Hail Mary because you're going to your backup quarterback who's a backup quarterback for a reason.
So Isaac Wilson, now is your chance, buddy.
How's your chance?
We'll be watching.
