Welcome to Andy Staples on three.
Hello from Nashville.
Only on three elite series.
We've got some of the best high school football players in America.
The class of 2025.
There are five stars and very, very high four stars.
If you hear a little bass thumping in the background,
it's because they are going through a workout right now.
They may be where you may see them running behind me at some point.
But there is a there is a weight room that has been constructed in here and they are going some of the best players in the country.
And I mean, it is pretty amazing to see just how different high school players look.
Cause I, we talk about how old I am on this show quite a bit, but people did not look like David Sanders, who
is the number one offensive line prospect in the country.
He's trying to decide between several different schools.
I talked to him for a while last night, talked to his dad for a while last night.
This is a guy who is six foot five, 290 pounds, and he looks like he could play linebacker
if you just shrunk him down a little bit.
That's what these guys look like now.
The athleticism is off the charts.
The level of training they have coming in,
they're going through a simulated college workout right now,
but I imagine a lot of these guys have already been through workouts
that are fairly
similar to what they will go through in college. And, you know, it's just the advancements that
have come in the last few years in terms of training, in terms of getting these guys agile
and ready to play right away. It is it's something. So these guys are very impressive.
You're going to hear from a couple of them. You're going to hear from Jamie French, who's a receiver from Jacksonville, Florida. He has a
very impressive offer list. He's looking at Texas, at Ohio State, Miami, Tennessee, LSU.
You're going to hear from him. He was by far the best dressed at our dinner last night.
Also, Matt Sollers, quarterback commit for Missouri. And he was one that kind of shocked everybody because he had an offer from Georgia.
He had interest from Penn State.
He had interest from Pitt.
And he decided, nope, I'm going to Missouri, became the first member of that 2025 class.
And now he is the Pied Piper trying to get other folks to Columbia, Missouri.
You're going to hear from him.
You're also going to hear from the Cavender twins. Remember, they were Fresno State basketball stars.
They went to the transfer portal right after NIL started. They already had a huge social
media following when NIL started. They turned that into a legitimate business.
And they went to Miami and both played at Miami. And then they took what looked like a different path. It looked like they were going to leave basketball behind,
move on to some other, maybe WWE. Well, after a year off, they are back in college basketball.
So you're going to hear from them about that decision. They're going to play for Miami again.
And this is a time when, you know, women's college basketball is blowing up.
And I'm sure they watched Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese and everybody and said, you know what?
There's some stars that have moved on to the WNBA. Maybe, maybe we need to help fill the
star vacuum. Although there's some pretty good young players that also will be filling that
star vacuum, but we've got a lot to talk about.
And also, remember, the SEC Spring Meeting is going down in Destin, Florida.
We're going to talk to Jesse Simonson from On3 about that in just one minute.
He is live from the Redneck Riviera.
But first, I want to tell you about Roback.
I am wearing my Roback performance polo right now.
Performance hoodies, polos, joggers, shorts, the most comfortable gear
known to man. I love Roback. I'm wearing it constantly. When I flew up here, you know,
sometimes it gets a little chilly on the plane. Roback hoodie. It's perfect. It's always perfect.

Roback is, I'm not going to say this, I think it's my favorite sponsor right now.
And I realize you can, every sponsor is your favorite sponsor. No, no, no.
That dog, it's on me a lot. I got that dog on me. Some people got that dog in me. I got that dog on me. Rowback, R-H-O-B-A-C-K.com.

All right, let us go to Destin.
If we're being official about it, Jesse, Miramar Beach, Florida.
What are we doing at the SEC spring meetings? You surviving?
Sandestin, doing well, staying busy, staying busy. But it's been a productive trip so far.
Well, let's set the scene for the folks because I've covered this event quite a few times. And it is at a
hotel that backs up to one of the most beautiful
beaches in the history of the world. And you
see the coaches and their spouses
and the athletic directors kind of enjoying it.
They're all in their cabana wear.
And the writers, well, there's a workroom in the basement.
And that's where they usually congregate.
And it's 54 degrees.
And they don't serve coffee.
And yeah, the closest I'm going to get to the water this week andy was was was sitting on the desk with fine bomb with the wind blowing in my face
that's about that's about as close as i'll actually get to the beach on this trip it's it's
the coaches bring their wives and families and it's certainly a good time for them for us it's
it's more more of a grind that
is one of my favorite moments though like when you head out to the beach you sit down on that desk
and you watch the wind blow through paul feinbaum's hair like nothing beats that it was it was it was
a glorious afternoon yesterday again that's the closest i got. Well, I'm going to probably ask you a lot about the same thing
Paul asked you about, and that's Billy Napier, because he's getting sued
by Jaden Rashada. He's entering a very big season at
Florida. They have maybe the toughest schedule in America, and
you talked to him for a while. So what was Billy Napier's
message in the first comments since he got sued?
Yeah, he was unfazed, Andy. He really was. And it was just kind of funny that
here's a guy who feels like he's kind of taking bullets on all fronts. You know, I wrote in a column right after the Rashada news,
this has been kind of an optimistic offseason for Florida in recent weeks.
I mean, they ended the spring well.
They really liked what they've done from the transfer portal
with some of the late additions, Cormani McClain, Elijah Badger,
you know, Arizona State's best receiver.
Napier, you talked to some guys behind the scenes,
they really like what the offensive and defensive lines look like,
heading into a pivotal fall camp, and then boom, it's just another PR nightmare.
And I joked, and I joked with Feinbaum after that,
that it's always another nightmare a day away.
And yet, he's a coach that the way he's walking and talking,
Andy, you wouldn't know that, you know, he quote unquote is embattled or is on any sort of hot seat.
He seems at least comfortable that the pressure's on and he knows that and let's see how the chips
fall. And so he certainly expressed in confidence and optimism that this is not
a distraction this is not something that's going to damper uh what again they feel like has been
an optimistic offseason and he feels like he has a football team that's maybe better uh or a lot
better than the prognosticators that have them labeled you know five and five and likely to
miss a bowl game for the first or for the back-to-back year for the first time in 40-some-odd seasons.
I thought it was interesting.
You pointed this out in your column.
He said there's no magic potion.
And I think Billy really does understand there's not much he can say.
He knows he has to win games.
They have that schedule.
Everybody knows it
and either he'll win or he won't and that'll determine whether he keeps his job
but you pointed out in your column that last year he also mentioned there was no magic potion
but i believe did a magic pill also appear this year yes and. And I noted that he said a lot of the similar things to me one-on-one a year ago.
And the difference is, I will say, and I could be wrong.
I fully admit this.
I could be wrong.
I actually think he believes it this time, though.
I think last year it was more just kind of coach speak.
Because he acknowledged yesterday,
he straight up acknowledged that there was some mistakes that he made,
that the staff made, that the program made, you know,
in that transition from year one to year two, not from taking over from year one,
but he felt like, you know, they did not kind of capitalize.
Whereas this off season they have, I mean,
they've overhauled the strength and conditioning staff.
They philosophically have completely changed what they were doing in that
building. He has kind of changed up his,
his actual on-field coaching staff.
They beefed up kind of, they have their NIL house in order.
Jaden Rashada, not the only issue that they've had previously but they feel like
that thing is all moving in the right direction and kind of in lockstep and so at least this year
whereas last year he was just saying some things at least this year you can materially point to
all right he has identified these changes now will they work we'll find out again they're they're
facing perhaps the most nightmarish schedule we've ever seen.
You and I have talked about this before.
You've talked about it with Nick Delatore at Gators Online.
So we'll see.
That's the biggest thing.
We'll see.
But he can only express confidence right now.
He's not doing the woe is me.
He's not doing the, you know, again again I got arrows coming at me from all angles I'm you know
I'm a Florida head football coach under litigation by a player that's at the University of Georgia
Kirby smart joke that's a sign of the times uh I don't know what reality that is but you know
at least it's one that Billy Napier seems to be okay with existing in. And his star signee in a Gatorade commercial,
DJ Lagway,
who is the reigning high school player of the year,
the Gatorade high school player of the year,
but he's in a commercial narrated by Michael Jordan.
It's got Jason Tatum.
It's got Caitlin Clark.
It's got Josh Allen.
I mean,
that's,
that's good pub there,
but it's interesting because
as big as the signing of Lagway was, I think a lot of the confidence
you're feeling from Billy Napier comes from Graham Mertz.
It does. It does.
And Mertz is, you know, I think Billy thinks he's one of the more
underrated quarterbacks in the country.
Mertz had last season a very strong season for a guy with low expectations. I mean,
his touchdown to interception ratio was impressive. He arguably was one of the better,
I would say, five or six quarterbacks in the SEC. And so now they're trying to kind of supplement
some of the pieces around him. The offensive line needs to be better. Clearly, they have to make a
lot of strides defensively. But I think Lagley is going to play.
I do think that Lagley is going to play a little bit.
This was not in this story at all,
but kind of working on some other stuff this week in Destin,
kind of picking some guys' brains about the in-helmet player to coach communication.
Napier said it himself that it's almost like a cheat code
for a kid like Lagley because it allows him to really paint that picture, you know,
in that six to eight seconds before the snap for a five-star who they already
feel is kind of pretty advanced, you know, in that role.
And so I don't know what the situation or how they're going to exactly,
you know, balance the two quarterbacks.
It's certainly Graham Mertz's team,
but I would be stunned if Lagway did not have a legitimate role in 2024. I think that's a really interesting point and something we should look at
around the country because yeah, if you've got a freshman quarterback, especially there's a skill
set, maybe that he brings that the veteran doesn't, it does make it easier to break somebody
in. Let's talk about another coach who I actually can't wait to watch
with the in-helmet communication, and that's Lane Kiffin
because he comes into a season where they have massive expectations.
They've got a roster that they've beefed up through the portal,
but they already brought back a ton of good players.
So this is a team that would have made the playoff last year
if it had been 12 teams.
How big are the expectations on Lane Kiffin and and how is he handling that
yeah i mean kiffin seems to be again talking about a guy who's comfortable in his own skin
uh i think lane understands he said he said it yesterday and he he understands that this is
easily the most talented team that Ole Miss has ever had.
And that's why they're being talked about as potentially winning or getting to an SEC championship for the first time in school history.
That's why the college football playoff expectations have kind of been laid at a program
that, frankly, if they won eight or nine games, the fans would rejoice.
But as Kippen said, just because they're the most talented team the program has ever had
doesn't mean they're the best team. And that's where you have to kind of marry those expectations
with the results on the field. I've said it throughout the offseason. I really like what
Ole Miss has done. The mercenary defense doesn't scare me like it would for many other programs
because Lane has proven very similarly, not quite as well, but similar to Mike Norvell,
of identifying the right guys to get in the transfer portal.
My biggest holdup with Ole Miss, and this is not a can't or won't,
it's just will they, and that's will Lane Kiffin start to win some games
he's not supposed to.
He's been extremely good at beating all the teams on Ole Miss' schedule
or on Tennessee's schedule or on USC's schedule that they were supposed to.
Outside of one or two upsets, Georgia here, I think there was one upset at USC.
Those are the only games that Lane Kiffin's won against top 25 opponents
that they were an underdog.
And so he's going to have to do that this year,
whether it's a coin flip against Georgia,
whether it's a game against Oklahoma or something like that,
or at LSU, one of these couple games on the schedule
that Ole Miss is not supposed to win,
that's going to be the determining factor
of whether they are able to live up to this kind of big 2024 hype.
Yeah, I feel like Baton Rouge has been a place
that's been really tough for them over the years
that if they could overcome that, that would be big.
Because let's be real.
They don't have to beat Georgia to make the playoff.
They don't even have to be Georgia to make the sec championship game.
I don't think.
They don't,
they don't.
But if you,
you know,
you're going to see Ole miss and that five,
six,
seven,
eight,
nine range.
And a lot of preseason polls.
That means,
you know,
you have the potential opportunity to win a national championship.
So you might have to be the Georgia or Alabama or Texas at least once.
You're going to have to beat maybe an Ohio State.
So their schedule is very, in terms of by SEC standards,
their schedule is quite favorably when you look at some of the other teams
in this league, what Georgia has, obviously what Florida has.
Oklahoma's schedule is ghoulish.
So this is the season.
This is what Ole Miss, Missouri, they have kind of pushed all their chips
in on this year where they've identified they've got a veteran team coming back.
You get Jackson Dart.
You get some of the other pieces, Trey Harris.
And then you supplement it with the Walter Nolans and the Juice Wells and
a dozen other or two dozen other guys that I think are going to make high impact plays.
So Lane Cuban, one of the more entertaining observers of all these situations. He's been in a
kind of a different spot in that room now because he's one of the older coaches in the SEC, at least more tenured.
He was the youngest when he was the coach at Tennessee in 2009,
but now it's a very different room.
What did he say about the dynamic in there without Nick Saban?
Yeah, well, here's a fun fact for you, Andy.
So he's the youngest guy in the room in 08-09
when he was the one-and-done coach at Tennessee.
Saban was obviously starting to build the rocket ship at Alabama there.
And Greg Sankey, the commissioner now and perhaps the most powerful person in college athletics as we speak right now, was the assistant SEC commissioner to mike slive well fast forward to today and there's
now this savingless vacuum and kiffin's the only guy still standing even though he left and came
back so it's kind of a funny dynamic he mentioned that specifically he talked about the fact that
you know that correct because i asked lane i was the one that asked lane point blank you know what
is that vacuum like?
Lane famously used to sit next to Mike Leach at these meetings, at the meetings in Birmingham.
Now, you know, RIP to the Pirate. He's no longer here. Saban has now retired.
Kiffin said it's strange. It's strange. And then he followed up, kind of had a brief deadpan pause.
It was like Kirby's taken over. You know, he's kind of the lead guy now and and I don't
think that would really surprise anybody Lane Kiffin elder statesman I never thought I'd hear
those words come out of my mouth but you mentioned Kirby and and he's one who spoke pretty forcefully
about something that I think coaches across the country were about. One thing we haven't really talked about as much with this House versus the NCAA sentiment is it will end scholarship limits, but those are going
to flip to roster caps, hard roster caps. You could have X number of players on your roster.
And the coaches, I thought, expressed a very legitimate concern that if it's 85 in football you don't have walk-ons anymore now i
think the thought is the cap would be something closer to what their actual roster right now which
we're talking more like 120 but greg sankey said that's not done yet how do they how do they exert
pressure as they try to figure out what that's going to look like?
Yeah, so I have a column in addition to the Napier column.
I have a column on On3 that came out this morning kind of outlining all of this.
And the SEC coaches were unanimous in their protest of making sure that walk-on programs are preserved. Now, you mentioned Kirby Smart. He had a great quote that I likened it in my column to, like,
if you hate dogs and babies.
If you hate puppies and babies, I mean, no one wants to sit, like,
just completely ditch walk-on programs.
So right now the reality is what is that number actually going to be?
And Kirby Smart, Clark Lee, some others kind of said, hey, you know, behind the scenes, I think there may be some more scaremongering going on or publicly, excuse me, than what actually is happening behind the scenes.
Sankey has said as much as well.
But to your point, they were all from Kirby Smart to Steve Sarkeesian.
I thought Mike Elko was, you know, the 12th man, the famed Texas A&M 12th man,
was as forceful about it as any.
They need to preserve these programs, and they are unanimous in that 85 is certainly not enough.
One of the issues, Andy, obviously, is that unlike the NFL, which has a hard cap of 53,
they can go out and sign a guy off the street tomorrow.
They also have a practice
squad. They also don't practice, as Hugh Freeze told us. They're not practicing nearly as physically
during the season like these teams. And so there's a safety aspect. There's a player reps aspect.
There's a depth aspect. I don't know if it's actually going to be 120. I think if you kind
of read between the lines on some of the stuff that Greg Sankey has said, it's going to be short,
shorter than that. He, you know, again, he is, he made mention specifically yesterday in a follow-up
again, his famous at times or a changing quote that he likes to go back to. So I think it may
be shorter than 120, but there's no doubt that the coaches are going to make sure that number's somewhere in the triple digits.
So I was thinking about this.
There is maybe a potential solution from the NFL.
You just have a practice squad, and those are your walk-ons.
Because in the NFL, the practice squad makes a different amount of money than the NFL minimum. They have different kind of rights and privileges,
which is exactly the difference between walk-ons and scholarships right now.
So they could potentially do something like that.
Now you may have to collectively bargain that.
I know we keep getting back to that,
but I do think it's one of those things.
There's a solution for,
if you want to find it.
There absolutely is it there absolutely is
there absolutely is and the irony is is that this is something that may hurt or you know these
football coaches are griping about it and i think unlike a lot of things they like to complain about
this actually does have some merit the walk the the end of these scholarship caps for something
like softball and baseball is extremely beneficial
i mean suddenly you can put all 35 players on the baseball program if you want to if you're a team
like lsu tennessee these schools that are all in on baseball you you can now invest and that becomes
a huge advantage for your program similar to oklahoma softball or florida softball uh same
thing so this is not you know it's on the one side for some of these athletes.
And that's what Sankey has kind of, I think, expressed as well.
On the one side, understand the why, but let's kind of get to the what,
maybe specifically for your sport.
This is going to be very, very interesting.
Jesse, I know you got a little bit more with the football coaches.
The ADs are going to talk a lot, quite a bit today. So enjoy, enjoy Destin.
Yeah. Staying busy. Thanks for having me, Andy.
Jesse Simonson from on three, there's going to be a lot of talk about that. That one,
listen, you got to be able to have walk-ons. It is not college football without walk-ons. I'm telling and we were kind of joking around and we said,
do you think we'd even be allowed to walk on at Florida right now? Do you think that they would
let us on the roster based on what we were coming out of high school? He's like, absolutely not.
And I was thinking about it because I sat next to a Georgia walk-on offensive lineman on a plane
a couple of years ago. And I'm looking at this guy and I'm like, you would have been offered
a scholarship at every school in the country when I was in high school. And that's just how things have changed
because the walk-ons at the power programs now are recruited athletes. I was recruited, but not
in any sort of massive way. The walk-ons at your power schools right now,
they were recruited to a lot of potential schools.
They had scholarship opportunities a lot of times that they've turned down.
So it's not like they probably wouldn't be able to play college football,
but the mechanism needs to be there that if you think you're not being
recruited at the right level, that you can choose a school,
and because you're a member of
that student body you can play at that school and so i think they're going to find a solution to
this i think this is one of those that yeah right now it looks a little scary but they will they
will come up with a solution for this because it would be insane not to it would be insane not to. It would be insane not to be able to have the 12th man at Texas A&M.
That would not work. It's not the same sport if you do that. And a lot of you guys are saying,
why are you looking for solutions in the NFL when I throw out the practice squad thing?
Well, because it's a professional sport. Let's be real here. It's been a professional sport for a
long time. They've just been keeping the money from the players. Now the players are going to get some of that money.
But if you're going to handle it that way,
you've got to have a way to keep the things
that still make it college football.
And walk-ons are one of the things
that absolutely make it what it is.
We were talking on the show yesterday
about the walk-on at Florida
who scored on the fake field goal
against Georgia in 2014.
He's a doctor now.
He was a Publix grocery bagger at the time
and a student.
That is the story.
You can't just throw that out.
I don't think they're going to.
I think they'll figure it out.
And like Jesse said,
like the SEC spring meetings,
those athletic directors, well, they're looking very much forward to being
able to scholarship all of their baseball and softball players and make sure that those people
are taken very good care of because those sports are extremely competitive in the SEC.
So we'll see how all this works out, but I don't think they'll be dumb enough to get rid of walk-ons
david g in the chat are sark and kiffin close based on their usc history uh they're in the
same meetings now obviously because texas is is in the sec starting in july 1st so steve sarkisian
yes in the same meeting with lake heaven they are very close they remain very close. When Lane was fired at USC, when he got hired as an analyst at Alabama later that Kiffin to a lot of different offenses because
Sarkeesian, who had been at Washington and ended up going to USC, he had had to make a similar
transition because obviously Sark, Kiffin had grown up in that same offense. They'd worked at USC.
They'd worked with Norm Chow at USC. They both kind of moved at about the same time. Sark was a little bit ahead
of that. So Kiffin obviously sought his advice and you know, Kiffin's path in the sec, which
began at Alabama as the offensive coordinator, definitely aided by Steve Sarkeesian pretty
heavily on the front end. So they're, they're absolutely still close and that's going to be
a fun one as they, they wind up in the same conference. that's going to be a fun one as they wind up in the same conference.
That's going to be a fun to watch going forward.
What also will be fun to watch going forward is the recruitment of Jamie French.
And you're going to see why in a second, because we talked to Jamie French last night,
and he is just a ball of energy.
Wide receiver from Jacksonville, Florida, looking at some very,
very interesting schools.
He's looking at Texas.
He's looking at Ohio state.
He's looking at LSU.
He's looking at Miami.
He's looking at Tennessee and he is going to be,
I don't know.
It's,
it's hard to,
can you say somebody is going to be a star when they're still in high
school?
Yeah,
I can say that this guy's going to be a star when they're still in high school? Yeah, I can say that.
This guy's going to be a star.
Here's Jamie French.
We're here with the best-dressed man at the On 3 Elite Series,
Jamie French from Jacksonville, Florida.
Why is it the receivers always dress the best?
Man, I'll say just the style, man.
You know, we're the most drippiest ones.
We got that.
We got to have the swag out there.
You know, you feel good.
You play good.
You know what I'm saying?
I'm trying to think because I'm going through in my head.
There have been some good receivers who, you know, didn't try to stand out.
Like Amari Cooper didn't like to talk to many people.
But for the most part, you guys have to have like, don't you have to have that mentality to make that quarterback know you're there?
Definitely.
I'm open every play.
I'm wide open all the time.
No doubt about that.
So this is a man who can pull off teal and a turtleneck,
and we will show you the shoes.
I promise.
We haven't shot him yet, but we will show you these shoes.
They are – actually, put that shoe up on the desk.
Don't roll off.
I don't want to get in trouble here. Put that shoe up on the desk don't don't roll off i don't want to get in trouble here put that shoe up on the desk look at that so your taylor in
jacksonville hooked you up with that definitely where is this taylor hey right on the north side
of jacksonville man right on the north side of jacksonville so you are in the middle of of all
this stuff you're you're up here you're learning some stuff. Definitely. No doubt. When you leave, you're back in the thick of this recruitment.
Right.
Texas, Ohio State, LSU.
Nope.
See, I knew I'd get it wrong.
Texas, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Miami.
Right.
In the mix right now.
LSU's in two.
Oh, LSU's in two?
Oh, hey, look at that.
Go Tigers.
All right.
So, as you're making this decision, and you were committed to Alabama for a while,
decommitted from them, who is on top right now?
Is there a leader?
Definitely.
Texas is standing out right now.
They've been standing out for a little while now.
So just getting that offer in January, building the ball quick.
I didn't expect it, but it happened for sure.
So how does that offer come?
Who gives it to you?
Is it receivers coach?
Is it Sark?
Receivers coach gave it to me at the time.
I got out with Coach Sark.
Got to know him as well.
And so now have you gotten out there yet?
I know you got the official coming up, but what are those trips to Austin been like?
Man, it was marvelous.
My first time was April 6th, man, this past spring.
I really loved it.
The fam loved it.
Just a different vibe, man.
With the offense, Coach Sark, he knows what he's doing with his receivers.
So I want him to be around day-to-day basis.
Well, and that's what – I'm sure Coach Sark can tell you exactly how he's going to use you.
What receivers from his past or that he's been using did he show you to say,
here's how I can use you?
Really, man.
Oh, it's Cal really?
Cal really, man.
Just the way he's getting getting in out of his breaks
you know at the line i feel like man his game is so similar he's just a little bit smaller that's
a little bit when when you see that when and it's a guy who's successful i mean like calvin really's
in your town now right like what does that mean to you it's man it's truly a blessing truly a blessing
you know it's inspirational gives me a drive every day.
You're going to be seeing some of these other schools here in the next few weeks.
How do you make that decision? Do you have a timetable for it?
Man, I want to do it August 30th, man. My mom's birthday.
I want to do it August 30th, man. Just taking my OVs in June,
taking that whole July, just sitting and thinking about it. That's really what y'. So it's just an excuse to have a big birthday party for your mom, right?
Yeah.
That's amazing though.
My mom really doesn't do much for her birthday.
We try to treat her special.
She don't really want much.
So we've got to make it special.
I was going to say, that's going to be pretty special.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Does she want all the cameras at her birthday party?
Mom is down.
Mom is down.
So has she been with you on, on some of these visits so far?
Most of them.
Most of them, for sure.
How important is it for her to feel comfortable with the people that are going to be with you?
Man, big time.
Big time.
I mean, I'm a family guy.
You know, I'm making this decision on family worth it, you know, where I can feel comfortable with my mom and stuff.
It's not there.
So definitely no doubt about that.
And we've been talking a little bit about this today,, you're going to learn a lot more about this tomorrow. Folks talking to you guys about
some of the stuff that's getting thrown at you in terms of, you know, money will be coming,
deals will be coming, you know, agency representation, all this stuff. Like,
how do you handle that? Man, just staying level-headed, you know, I heard it in the
meeting, just stay, just do the same thing you need to get here. You just stay level-headed,
you know, keep God first,
and he'll lead you to the right path for sure.
How much does that stuff matter to you when you're looking at different opportunities?
Man, I'm a guy who loves ball, man.
It's been my dream since I was five.
You know, it's just this NIL stuff, just as an add-on, a plus two,
just to keep me driving every day.
You know, I just love ball and get out there every day, man.
Does it feel the same as like when you were five and
you're playing man playing in the yard?
Definitely does it still feel the same every time I get a ball man just feel
it's just some go through your skin.
You know it's football times football is ready to go.
What is what is your favorite thing?
About this sport, what makes it special for you?
Scoring touchdowns, scoring touchdowns and making the defender look silly, man.
That's really it.
So for those of us who played on the line and never scored a touchdown,
what does it – okay.
I've always wondered this.
Yeah.
So let's say this is a catch and run.
This isn't a catch the ball and the end zone.
It's a catch and run.
You know you're going to score.
Right.
Are you thinking about how you might celebrate?
Okay.
100%. What is your best celebration to this point of a touchdown?
Man, I have a lot.
Ooh.
I got a lot of them.
I don't know if there's a best, man.
I got some top 10.
Do you work on them at practice?
Like, do you have the –
Yeah, it's always typical of a celebration.
You'll get in practice, and now, ooh, did it again in the game. game you know so it is really yeah high school and college they're a little strict on
this you might have to wait till you're in the league to like what's your dream like i've seen
the dudes you duck duck goose i've seen them play you know they're like i'm fishing and i'm catching
you like if you had a dream celebration yeah with you and your teammates what would that be man i
said that how to go steep man oh very nice gotta that. The how to go steep, man. How to go steep.
Very nice.
Got to be that one.
The how to go steep, man.
I'm trying to remember.
I wonder if you were even born when Terrell Owens hit the sharpie in his sock.
Have you seen the video of that?
I haven't seen that.
Terrell Owens hit a sharpie in his sock.
He scores a touchdown.
He signs the ball.
Really?
I think he handed it to the ref.
He threw a flag on him. was that was one of the better
ones but i i like that i like that you're thinking ahead hide and seek is a good so are you hide and
teammates find you go seek man okay goal post goal post hide the ball something see that's the thing
like okay you got to go play for the cowboys or somebody who plays the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day and you
hide in the Salvation Army kettle
afterward. Yeah, that'll be sweet.
That's it right there, right? That'll be sweet.
So, I mean, now who
since you've been here, what other players
have been on you about, okay, you've got to come
where I'm coming? Man,
definitely Bryce Underwood from LSU.
Oh, yeah. Okay. He's been on me for sure.
Hedgie Lacy, for sure.
George McIntyre.
Look, my five, you know, those quarterbacks are my five.
I was going to say, you've got an LSU, an Ohio State, a Tennessee.
They're all here.
They're here.
Yeah.
Is that pressure?
They're all here.
You've got to be nice.
You know you're not going to make them all happy.
Yeah, right.
You can't.
You only get to choose one. Yep.
Mom's birthday is going to be a hell of a day. Definitely.
Definitely. How much fun are you having in this process?
Man, I'm enjoying it. You know, enjoying the process, taking it all in. You only get this once, man.
So I'm just taking it all in. Well, it's interesting because I've talked to some of these, you know,
everybody seems to handle it differently. I talked to some guys today that are like,
I have my phone on do not disturb.
I don't want to talk to anybody,
but my parents and my girlfriend and that's it.
You know,
and I like talk to one player and his dad's like,
he doesn't want to talk to anybody.
He just wants to play ball and he'll pick a school.
And so how is it that you take it so differently?
Like you seem to enjoy every contact, like every person you meet through this.
Man, it's just I feel like football when it's ball time, you know,
it's meeting new people.
I'm just a social guy, man.
I love the people, man.
I just feel like doing people right, you know,
you'll get a return one day for sure.
Oh, yeah.
Good guy.
Oh, yeah.
For sure.
So let me see.
Look at this.
This chain is elite for sure. For sure for sure yep yep is it wait we got two
chains on though right a little cuban up here okay the action right here man shut out cuban links
yeah yeah yeah i didn't even think they made songs about those anymore that was all when i was a kid
so it's good to know that the classics are still alive so around it's still around so jamie what what do you want to most get out of this experience here man my my dream my dream
man just getting to the nfl man just living out my dream that's pretty much all that's what i want
to get out of this so who what receiver you mentioned you know sark showed you calvin
really but what receiver did you you grew up saying that's that's who i want to be man obj
100 oh yeah welcome man this i used to dye my hair like a man obj he had the world man he had my
hair so the catch the the cats yes it had it yep yep yeah well maybe one day so when lsu won the
national title when they beat clemson yeah obj was on the field yeah he was celebrating we all remember he was handing out hundreds
it was tremendous you can do that now like the rules have changed like so if you are the next obj
wherever you go yeah if your team wins the national title and you're in the league yeah you
got to bring the role of hunting because because nobody gets in trouble for that now. Yeah, it's crazy, man. It's out of the saints for sure. That's right.
Jamie French, he's going to get there.
Yeah.
August 30th.
Keep your eyes peeled.
Somebody's getting good news.
Jamie, thank you so much.
I appreciate you, man.
That is Jamie French.
That is Jamie French, five-star wide receiver from Jacksonville.
Yeah.
Get excited if he's thinking about your school.
He says the Longhorns are number one right now.
And Jamie will say that.
He will tell you straight up where he's at right now.
There's visits to go, though.
August 30th, mom's birthday.
Going to be a big, big day.
So we'll see where Jamie winds up.
We know
where Haley and Hannah Cavender
are headed. They are headed back
to Miami. They're going to be at Coral Gables
playing together again.
Very interesting journey
through college basketball for these two.
They're twins. They go to
Fresno State. This is pre-NIL.
They already have a big social media following. NIL happens. They go to Fresno State. This is pre-NIL. They already have a big social media
following. NIL happens. They become massive stars while still at Fresno State. They then use the
transfer portal to go to Miami. They play there together and then decided, okay, we've done what
we can in college basketball. Now it's time to grow this business and move to the next chapter of our lives.
Meanwhile, during that year, the sport just completely blows up.
You're talking about huge audiences for women's college basketball as everybody's watching.
Kaitlyn Clark, Angel Reese, Juju at USC, like all of these stars in the NCAA tournament.
Well, now they're coming back.
The Cavender twins are back in college basketball. There's some new stars coming up, but they figure,
hey, we've been stars in this sport before. We can do it again. They're back at the U and they
joined us to talk about the decision to come back and also what advice they're going to give to these
high school football players as they enter the NIL world that the Cavenders have
absolutely mastered. We are honored to be joined by Hannah and Haley Cavender,
not former college basketball players who were now current college basketball players. Again,
you played at Fresno state, you to Miami there was a gap year now
y'all are back with the Canes for one final year how exciting is it to be back in basketball in
general um speaking for myself I mean I think it's super awesome to be able to have an opportunity
again to play with Haley especially at the University of Miami um being able to go back
there and work with some coaches and the wake program and just the community in Miami is amazing and so supportive. So just couldn't be more
thankful for the opportunity. Haley, you were looking at some other options. And then when
Hannah said she was going back to Miami, you said, okay, I'm going back to the U too.
Right. I think it's extremely hard to say no. And the bond that we have in the court,
when the University of Miami presented the opportunity for both of us, it was a very easy decision for me
just because I love the U
and I love the coaching staff there
and everything that Miami brings.
So extremely excited to be back.
I am so fascinated by your journey through college sports
because you go, you start out at Fresno State,
had great careers there.
NIL is not even a thing.
NIL comes in and you guys have taken
great advantage of that you know you kind of trailblazers in that area did
you realize you know because you had social media influence you had a social
media following when when that came in did you realize okay this isn't something
we can really take advantage of right I think when NIL first passed we didn't
really understand it as much kind of like everybody else it was more like the wild wild west but then we
obviously created an amazing team around us with our attorney jaron heitner and of course our
agency um esm and then just being able to work with them throughout the years and like truly
understand um working with brands uh and being able to have creative control within them has
been amazing and we've uh we've like, our life has changed since then.
So couldn't be more thankful.
I mean, did you think this would be a career?
Because basketball, I'm assuming, when you're playing college basketball,
it is all-consuming.
It is, you know, it's probably what you were building your whole lives for.
Right.
When did you realize that, wait, there's a whole career,
you know, a lifetime career in here um regarding with the brands exactly being an influencer I mean that's something that you know when I was a kid that term
didn't exist social media is such a powerful tool for businesses nowadays
and you can see how much has grown with the student
athletes since NIL has passed. When I realized that, you know, we could really do this as a
dream job would probably be since NIL has passed. I think Hannah and I have done a great job with
our team and working with my parents and just setting ourself up for, you know, being successful
long-term. I would just say networking, connecting as much as you can
down the road has taught us so much in the business space.
And yeah, you can manage it all and be very proactive
with the right team and people in your corner.
So we're here at the On3Elite series.
Some of the best high school football players in the country,
they're gonna be college football players,
they're gonna be making NIL deals, some of them already are.
But what advice would you guys give them for entering this world and for navigating
it? Right. I think the advice I would give is just jump up, jump at every opportunity you have.
You never know the places it'll take you or the people that you'll meet. So that's what we did.
And I think just taking one day at a time, I know a lot of things can get overwhelming,
but if you have the right people in your corner
and you stay grounded, it's gonna be amazing.
So Haley, I'm gonna ask you,
what is the coolest thing that you think prior to this,
you never thought you'd be able to do?
Where you were, in the last few years,
you've been looking at it and you're like,
I cannot believe I'm here.
I cannot believe I'm with this person
or I cannot believe I'm in this place.
That is such a loaded and hard question. I know, I'm sorry. Right or I cannot believe I'm in this place. That is such a loaded and hard question.
I know. I'm sorry.
Right. I think, like Hannah said, our lives have changed so much due to NIL.
So the people you met and the places I've been because of NIL has been just insane.
I would say one moment that I'll always look back on would be our billboard in New York when we were on it, when it first
happened in July 1. I think that's like a moment I'll always touch base with and just, you know,
share to my family one day. How does that come to be? So there's July 1, 2021 when it's first.
So just, you know, your representation at that point, come to you and say,
guys, we got something here. when they say we want to put you
you know tens of you know 60 feet tall on a billboard in new york city like what do you
what do you say to that right i mean we were in michigan with my family and we got the connect
to fly out to new york to because there's going to be opportunities out there and honestly we were
kind of naive with it we didn't know what to expect um and then we knew that i mean that day literally was packed with media
with tv interviews um i've never done so many interviews in my life but i would never change
that day yeah i mean i truly think it was one of the days that you'll look back on it was so
compact so chaotic but it was like wow and then you see yourself up with your twin sister signing
the first deal on a billboard you're like what, what's going on? Like, is this real life?
So, I mean, yeah, what an incredible day for sure.
And now it's interesting because you've now done all this and you left basketball behind for a little while.
What's it like getting back into the groove of being student-athletes again?
Being, you know, having that schedule and that training regimen and all that.
Right.
I think for me, I've been training the last year. being you know having that schedule and that training regimen and all that right um i think
for me i've been training the last year i announced i was going back last september to play
basketball just because i missed it so much um and that void was never filled and i wanted to take my
fifth year so i've always was on a very trained and disciplined schedule we both are very routine
like people when it comes to like working out. I would just say, though, the freedom is limited, especially when you're an influencer.
And then on top of that, you're a student athlete, your education.
And then you have so many commitments on top of that for being an athlete as well for the University of Miami.
So freedom is very limited, just that in that space.
But I would just say in general, yeah, it's very loaded and busy days.
We're on flights all the time, but like I said,
I would never change it.
It's a dream job.
How careful do you have to be when you have this?
So I've got six figure followers on social media
and I remember when my kids were a little like telling him,
do not take dad's phone and mess around with it
because if you accidentally send something,
it could go out to a lot of people.
But like when it's in the millions
how careful do you have to be about what you say what you think what you what you hit send on right actually it's kind of funny um my dad when we were growing up like didn't want us to have social
media at all like i mean i i i hit a facebook with from him probably when i was in seventh grade so
it's super ironic but i mean i just think in life you have to be like careful and safe. Like obviously privacy is very important to some extent.
And I think Haley and I have a really good understanding
of that and just try to be as careful as possible.
Well, also your brand ambassadors,
which that's something I'm interested to hear, you know,
when you talk to the players here about that,
like you kind of are on all the time,
whether you want to be or not,
when you sign up with a brand, I would think you kind of represent on all the time, whether you want to be or not. When you sign up with a brand,
I would think you kind of represent them 24-7. Is that something that is on your mind,
or is it something that you just kind of get used to?
Right. I think that 100%. When you represent and you're in a contract with a brand,
they expect you to represent them in a certain way. That goes just being a student athlete for
a school as well. I think all student athletes know that when you're committed to a school for a
program, you represent them on the court when you're there and then when you're off the court
as well. So I think that student athletes already have an understanding of that. But then when
businesses are paying you money to represent them brand, it's definitely another indicator of, you
know, you need to be private as much as you can and be able to showcase what you
want to show on social media and then be private on other things as well so one of the nil nilds
you had was with the wwe and and you've gotten to to do some stuff there everybody keeps wondering
all right when when are we going to see hayley and hannah in the squared circle when are we
cutting promos is is that something that may happen down the road?
Yeah, I don't think that's something that wouldn't happen.
I think right now we're going to focus on this upcoming year and then kind of cross that bridge when we get there.
But the WWE fan base is amazing and the people that work there.
We talked to the Bella Twins.
It's definitely an incredible space, so definitely could be down the lines for sure.
All right.
I'm going to ask you both this question because I want to hear both answers.
What did you miss most about basketball?
I missed the competitiveness and the feeling that it brings me,
probably more than anything, yeah.
I think with me, I think it's being able to play at the highest level with your twin sister.
And the moment you feel like I feel when I'm on the court with Haley, I never miss like training with somebody and the accountability and waking up every single day and grinding, like just to try to get better each and every day.
I want to trade that feeling for a world. So could you play a part?
Yeah, we're going to. I mean, that's the thing like you were committed to TCU for a minute. So yeah, I would say, yeah, I was willing to play a part just because I love the game so much. And I didn't know if Hannah wanted to come back for a fifth year. And I was willing to do that. But once you play with your twin sister or sibling in general, you don't want to not play a part so um that's just kind of how I left it and
um yeah no regrets I would definitely play with Hannah more than not play with her so how did
that Hannah do you call her do you text her and say hey I want to or is it like is it twin telepathy
like the Haley did you just know okay wait Hannah is going to come back oh we're best friends yeah
like that is like there's nobody actually closer on planet earth but um i would say no i think that
ultimately when i decided not to take my fifth year there was other indicators and things that
i was going through um and i just mentally wasn't in a good space and then an opportunity presented
itself and i kept like questioning and wondering okay like maybe why wouldn't i want to take my
fifth year like give it one more shot um and i mean there's way more that goes into the story
but i have a really great relationship with the assistant coaches at the university of miami and
they kind of reached out to me and gave me an opportunity that i didn't want to say no to so
i said hey i'm going to you uh with or without you you know that was great it was a great it was a
great how long is that decision-making process for you haley when she says whether without you
um to be to be honest i would say my dad is very big on loyalty
and like when you give someone your word.
So it wasn't like a quick one, obviously.
Like I'm like, dad, I'm going to play with my twin sister.
But as a respect to TCU's program,
definitely thought about it for like two, three weeks
because at the end of the day, when you give someone your word.
But also it's my sibling and my best friend.
I think dad probably can understand that.
He had a couple.
It took some time.
But hey, we're all on the same page.
He already borrowed his U colors again.
So we're good.
Everybody's going to Coral Gables.
Absolutely.
The fam's with us.
Thank you guys so much.
Appreciate it.
Thank you for having us.
The Cavender Twins headed back to Coral Gables this would be a fun time to be back in women's
basketball for one more year when you already have an established audience I mean this is
there'll be a lot of eyes on them as you know Miami transitions to a new coaching staff that
will be a very interesting situation to watch meanwhile we'll be watching the situation in
Columbia Missouri because the Tigers coming off a very good season. They would have made the college
football playoff last year had it been a 12-team affair. And if you look at their schedule this
year, good chance they might be able to get in there. Luther Burden comes back at receiver,
Brady Cook back at quarterback. The question is, when Brady Cook is done, who takes over?
Well, I think the guy you were about to talk to, he might be the guy who takes over. Matt Zollers
had some very impressive offers, including one from Georgia, but he decided to cast his lot with
Missouri and Eli Drinkwitz, and he is very excited about becoming a Missouri Tiger.
And we talked to him about what that means to him
and what he's doing to get ready for it.
Here's Matt.
Here's the Matt Zollers.
Missouri Tiger.
First commitment for the class of 2025 for Missouri.
Like, what responsibility does that carry being the quarterback
and the first commit in the class?
It definitely carries a big responsibility.
You've got to have trust in the coaches to bring kids around you.
So I had max trust in Coach Drinkwith.
I knew we're going to have a good class this year.
So, yeah.
When you look at some of the talent that he's brought in over the last few years,
obviously, like, you know, Luther probably won't still be there when you're there,
but Luther Burden's been great.
Williamson Wary will still be there when you get there.
Like, what does that mean that you know you've got a coach
who can land that level of player?
It's great.
Obviously, he's been able to keep the five-star players from
Missouri and Missouri so um there's a big 2026 five-star yeah yeah hopefully we'll be able to
keep him uh but it's definitely great seeing the type of recruiter he is so but you're not from
Missouri you're from Pennsylvania and you looked at Georgia you looked at Penn State you looked at Pitt like what was it about coach drink in Missouri that that really um probably the main reason was
the connections like how I clicked with the coaches and the players uh it was definitely
different out there um it like happened faster and smoother than everywhere else it wasn't forced or
anything it just happened um I feel like it's easy to talk to all the players also the coaches yeah um they know they know how to coach football but like also off the
field it's i can still talk to them drink seems like he'd be fun when to play for is he uh yeah
how often is he texting you every day um he probably texts me two three times a week like
not just like text but like have a conversation yeah yeah times a week uh he's a very energetic guy so um does he tell you hey like when you're coming to this thing hey tell these
guys about missouri um not exactly like he just like wants me to rep missouri well um don't do
anything stupid obviously um and just have fun so you said it happened easier and smoother and
faster it was it was fast and you were one of the first kind of dominoes to fall in the class of 2025.
What happened?
And, you know, did you want to go finish that early, or did it just sort of work out that, okay, I found my spot?
I knew I wanted to finish in the spring.
I didn't know what, like, around what time.
Like, I didn't know if it was going to happen in May or April, but, um, I just, once I got all the offers, a lot of offers came at like around
the same time. So it kind of was like all there. And then I just got to look into everything.
And then from there, I narrowed my down, my decision, like pretty quickly to like four
schools. So I could really focus on what I wanted to see. And I went to those four schools, um,
and just wanted to see what I wanted to see and I went to those four schools um and just wanted to see what I
wanted to see and I saw most of Missouri what is that process like for a quarterback because you
know it's different for different position groups if you're an offensive lineman they're going to
offer a bunch of offensive linemen in the class if you're a quarterback they may only offer one
two three quarterbacks in the class like you said they came kind of quick were you wondering okay when
when are they coming and then what's it like when they start flooding um so my recruitment i feel
like was pretty different than everyone else's yeah um i think i only had eight offers when
my junior season ended right um and then i got one in beginning of january and then it started
pickup yeah so uh it was kind of – it was obviously different.
It was late.
It happened pretty late.
What do you think changed?
Was it they got your junior film and just got a chance to dive into it?
Oh, yeah.
I feel like –
Yeah.
I feel like everyone got to watch it once the college football season was over.
So I feel like that's, like, what changed everything
because people weren't as focused on the out-of-state guys like during
the season. Yeah. And most of my offers were like from the area, like around a certain area.
And what do you think? Could you tell during that season, okay, I'm playing really well.
If people see this, like they're going to know. I'd say I've started notice after my,
it was the third game.
Um, our first four games are, our schedule are out of league.
So, um, probably by the third game, I've kind of realized like, Oh, I'm going to have a
good season.
Yeah.
Um, that was probably like the best game I've ever played.
I think I had like 500 yards and like nine touchdowns.
But, um, yeah, probably, probably you get tired throwing nine touchdown passes.
Like you just like, um, coach, I think tired throwing nine touchdown passes.
Like, coach, I think I may be done here.
It actually only happened in three quarters.
It was a lightning.
Oh, Jesus.
They're like, let's go home.
We stopped at like – it was like 63 to 20 or something.
Wow.
But it was fun. That was the best game I've –
That's going to feel like playing seven on seven after a little while.
Yeah, it was definitely like, it was almost like repetitive.
You just got back out there.
So how excited are you to play in this offense?
Obviously, Drink's got a pretty creative offense.
You've seen what they've been able to do with Brady Cook.
I've already started to look at their offense um with the assistant quarterback coach
uh we zoom once every two weeks right now so it's not like overwhelming with my playbook right
uh but it's definitely a it's a great offense to be in um and it's also good that it's coach
drinkwitz's offense yeah um coach moore's like he's a really good offensive coordinator and i
think he's a chance to go be a head coach somewhere.
But I have faith in Coach Stringer to hire a new offensive coordinator.
And it's not like I'm going to have to learn a new offense.
So being from the other side of the country, is Missouri somebody who would have been on your radar if they hadn't had such a great season last year?
It would coat the force of Coach Stringer's personality probably personality probably gotten him on the list anyway.
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
It obviously helped that they had a good season,
and I think they're going to have a good season next year,
obviously returning most of their people.
Good schedule, too.
Yeah.
But the main thing was Coach Drinkwitz and Coach Moore.
So you're here.
You're with a bunch of the best best prospects to come some of them committed
like you some of them not how how much recruiting is going on like george mcintyre from tennessee's
here there's a bunch of tennessee targets here like how how much recruiting is going on among
the the committed quarterbacks it honestly just depends like what of players are here. I feel like there's not many that have Missouri in their top schools.
I think off the top of my head, I know one or two.
Michael Fasucci, but he's not here yet.
Right, he's coming tomorrow.
But obviously, Tennessee, there's a lot of people.
Yeah, Georgia's got to be pretty busy.
Russ Underwood, I think, has to be pretty busy. There's a lot of people. Yeah, Georgia's got to be pretty busy. Like, Russ Underwood, I think, has to be pretty busy.
There's a lot of LSU targets here.
So, yeah, but it's interesting.
Like, how much do you find yourself recruiting for this class and for 26?
I try to check in.
It's not like I don't want to bother the kids,
but I try to check in with them, like, every once in a while.
Yeah. Just to, like, see how they're feeling, what their thoughts are and stuff.
I think I feel pretty good on some three receivers.
There's three receivers that are going to the same weekend.
I'm going to be there.
Oh, nice.
We should be able to get at least two of them.
When somebody commits for your class who gets more
excited you or drink probably equal it's every time someone commits it's yeah it's a great
feeling especially when uh jack lang committed oh yeah so and and i know that some of our recruiting
guys asked you this today like have other schools kept calm so it's not like they they're not trying to bother me yeah
but they're just kind of checking in just like just in case okay yeah they just want to be there
like if something but you you and drink are partners in this that's right i'm sure he relies
on you quite a bit for for these next couple years of recruiting classes yeah but what's it like
knowing you could help decide who you get to play with what's your team's gonna look like that's it's honestly really cool
because like it's almost like you're mad and you get to pick your team that is awesome um hey they
got the new college football come game coming out so you can recruit your team now but yeah
but it's definitely cool yeah um like helping get the guys that you want to play with.
Well, congratulations on getting it all done,
finding the place that fits you right, and good luck.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Awesome.
That's Matt Zollers.
Maybe the next QB1 at Missouri.
We'll see.
But Brady Cook's still QB1 right now,
and they have big, big expectations for this season.
I have big, big expectations for this show tomorrow.
So, little change in the regular schedule.
