Ari and I joined by our friend George Reister the third, former Oregon Duck, former Jacksonville Jaguar, host of the Unafraid Show. How are we doing, George? man i'm doing great man how how could i be doing any better we have football tomorrow we have football tomorrow and it will not stop for five straight days this is one of the greatest days that that the lord has ever let us see because it's today george's that's a good job last time like i think

he's just going to come back all the time now so uh really i like it i like it here it's comfortable it's beautiful this is this is and the best is part about this, the football starting tomorrow means we don't have to talk about court cases all the time anymore. I don't think. What? Why would you think that that that would be the end of this? I don't know it was the end of it, George. I just think our attention will be diverted away from the courtroom. I'm hoping. Please. Okay. In theory, right? Because yes, it should technically be over on Thursday. But that's until somebody else has another grievance

about another thing because there was some cases today that got decided and some people got denied eligibility. So it depends on what state you're in, what courthouse that you go to and then we're going to be saying, oh my gosh, who's actually playing for this

team? Who's playing on Saturday? Andy, I think what you meant to say was that the court proceedings will go to the back of the show instead of the front of it. I think you're probably right. But yeah. While we're here, since George mentioned court proceedings today, there have been some that are of some import. And it's interesting because it's not all LSU. I think everybody assumes this is like LSU versus the SEC.

The reason LSU is so much in the news and the SEC is threatening to punish LSU is they're the ones most seemingly likely to try to take players who were in NFL training camps or who had signed pro contracts. That's really what the league. are trying to work against. And so I'm going to explain there's a case in Kentucky where the SEC landed a pretty significant victory, but also two players that you might know landed a victory as well. So in Louisville, there's a case where Seth Trimble was one of the plaintiffs. If you don't remember who Seth Trimble is, he played basketball in North Carolina. He wants to play basketball at Louisville, but he needs to get a TRO.

But he didn't sign a professional contract. So it's okay if he gets one. So he got the TRO. Alex Safari, the Kentucky linebacker, also got one in that same thing. But the judge declined to extend the TRO to the SEC. All the judge said is, look, the NCAA can't do anything to you. The SEC can. Now, since these guys didn't sign pro contracts, the SEC doesn't really care about them.

Or, well, Seth Trimble doesn't matter because he's not going to an SEC scorn. school, but the ACC has the same rule. But they didn't sign professional contracts. So their leagues probably are not going to care that they're going to play. But that's, George, I want to ask you about this because I think this is interesting because all the LSU people the whole time, like Steve Sarkesian comes out and says, well, it's a moral issue, this whole thing. They have a player on their team, Cole Hudson, who.

Yes. tried out a couple mini camps, but he never signed a pro contract. So, like, it's funny that they keep

throwing out things like this is a moral issue. Like, it's a very narrow distinction. You're doing the same thing. Yeah. And mind you, if it were up to me,

I already told everybody, I would let them play because the NCAA screwed everybody over. But we got the NCAA making a rule. Then we got the conferences step, in and then it's being overruled by judges.

And it looks like that this is all LSU, but then we've heard Eli Drinkwood say, you know, if the rules are the rules, that we'll do what we got to do. But then a lot of coaches have spoken out that we're not doing this. I do not understand this at all if you are a head coach. If this were March, April, cool, right? Because you can go through spring ball.

They can acclimate to your system. and acclimate within the team. But now we're talking about Lane Kippen having guys practice and then seeing what happens on Thursday, they might play on Saturday. They might not. They might play the next Saturday. It's just so disjointed in the locker room. And no, this is not an NFL locker room where you understand that a free agent can walk

in the door or get traded. And then now your starting spot is going or your backup spot is gone. That's the, that's the issue is that Lane Kippen sat up there. and just says anything and thinks that we're going to believe it. Said, oh, my gosh, this is out the kids, locker room. I look at all of them. I talk to our leadership council. Of course you talk to Tradeaz Green and your quarterback.

None of their spots are in danger. So you didn't talk to the guy who's the backup tight in. You didn't talk to anybody else. So, of course, the guys on your leadership council who are the best players on your team, none of them are going to push back. And what are they going to say? say, coach, nah, no, I'm not cool with it. And then, and then Lane Kippen would just say, hey, I understand I hear your, I hear what you're saying, but we're going to move forward

with this anyway. Andy, I'm at the point where I would just like, if like, paroled felons who committed violent crimes wanted to play, they can play. I just like, I'm so tired of it. But I don't think you should head that direction, maybe the other direction. Yeah. I feel like that that's the wrong direction, are you? I don't need. Yeah, it just, like, do you guys ever feel like beaten down by this? Like this like, it's like a wave at the beach where it's like, okay, here it comes and then you take on the wave and then you get a few minutes of quiet. And then the wave comes. And eventually the wave gets so big.

It's just like, knock me over. Like, I don't know. Like, what you said of dating the show in is true. It's just like football's here. You've been beaten into submission where now we're so fatigued by it. We just wanted to just go away. Just give us an answer. And what people are truly, I believe, at their core asking for is leadership, right?

And leadership does not look like Congress getting involved. Leadership looks like the same people who have spent over $100 million in lawyers over the last five years with the NCAA and the conferences, having those people say, maybe instead of spending another $100 million over the next few years on lawyers, let's hire some consultants and some lawyers to actually figure out this collective bargaining thing. That way when players then sue, they can't. The same way when Tom Brady and Ezekiel Elliott tried to sue the NFL to play and didn't want to serve their suspensions, they went to court, they got a TRO, and then a week later, they gave up.

They were like, never mind. This is pointless. You know what I'm tired of to, though, George? Because I think what you just said is true. here's what I'm tired of. Coaches getting in front of a microphone and talking about how bad they want somebody to be in charge and everybody to play by the same rules and the governance of it. I don't know. You guys are both married, right?

So you have a wife and I have one too. And this is kind of what it reminds me of. Sometimes we go on double dates and dinner parties and do things that she organizes 100% of the time. And I get a post-party lecture about my behavior at these things. And my behavior usually is making an unsavory joke or saying something on a turn or whatever. And the thing that I say to her is, why do you consistently get mad at me for the traits that you fell in love with? Like, I can't not be who I am. And like getting mad at me over and over again for the same things is a waste of both of our time.

So like, I think you're saying, I think you're saying we shouldn't be mad at Lane Kiffin for Lane Kiffening. Is that, is that what you're saying? I think that like it's just kind of like, yeah, but I also think too that like if the system is inherently broken, clamoring for a fix that doesn't exist publicly over and over again is like being waterboarded with the obvious. Like we know, we know everybody wants rules. We know we don't want NFL players. The problem isn't with us and the media and the fans and the people you're talking to when there's a microphone in your face. You should be saying these things in the commissioner meetings. You should be budgeting them over the head with it.

It's not our problem. What's your problem? They are. I know. It's deeper than that. It's deeper than that. Because all these coaches are clamoring for a rules, you could just do like dabbo and follow the rules. But they choose not to.

Instead, Lane's like, hey, let's find ways with these third party people to like pay over the cap. Let's make the cap non-existent. Yeah. I mean, that's not just Lane. We don't want to single him out because everybody. That's everybody. No, no, no, I'm saying. Because he's, he's not the only one.

He's just the loudest one. And so all the coaches that are clamoring for rules, you could just follow the rules. Novel concept. Follow the rules. But instead, they are incentivized to get an advantage. Everything is about an advantage. And this is why there needs to be standardization of,

like if I were running, college football. First thing we're going to fix is the calendar because the calendar is broken. You can't have teams trying to compete for a championship, trying to retain their roster, retain their coaches, retain the assistant coaches, and try to find transfer portal people all at the same time while you're recruiting high school. And you can't have a situation where there's not parity. Parity is why the NFL is so great. You must have a salary cap, a real salary cap and then real n i'll not this pay for play mumbo jumbo that they call nil now that is pay for play and then nil should be unlimited because and the truth is all right andy and people don't want to

say this and i have a kid playing college football and another one coming up but here's the truth college football players they have very little real nil value compared to professionals they have a high roster value yes high roster value low NIL value. Aaron Donald, one of the greatest defensive ends of all time. He was getting about $100,000 a year from Nike. So why would Colin Simmons or Matteo Uiangelo be worth half a million dollars NIL? Yeah.

Are they worth that pay for play? Yes. Yeah, it's funny that you say that because like when you actually think about and Andy and I've had this discussion in the past too, It's just like when you think about actual marketing that we're consuming, like as NFL consumers, it's like you're not seeing a lot of Will Anderson in commercials. You know, he's one of the best players in the entire league. And like he's not a marketable human.

And I don't even know if people know what he looks like. So in that standpoint. They could stop pretending and just say, hey, we're paying them to play football. That would be nice. But, okay, here's the thing. And this is why I think we're close. And it's not just because games are starting. There's a hearing tomorrow in Louisiana.

And this case that involves Dekwon Wright and Zavian Harris, the two players that are potentially could be added to LSU's roster, it's an injunction here. And the judge will decide whether they're going to give the injunction to these guys and whether that injunction will encompass the NCAA and the SEC or just the NCAA. We'll find out about that. If the judge denies the injunction, it would actually be very similar to the Charles Betiaco situation. last year in basketball, where Mediaco got a temporary restraining order, played five games. The judge in Tuscaloosa then said that they had the hearing for the injunction, and the judge is like, I'm not giving you the injunction. And that was the end of it.

And it could end that way. It could end another way where the judge does grant the injunction, and then the SEC applies more pressure, or the college football playoff says, hey, we're banned. this kind of player. If you'd like to play in the college football playoff, you should not have any of those. Like, they're going to be more layers added to this, even if they win tomorrow in court. So they're going to figure it out. Like the Tennessee Chancellor Dande Plumman went on the record with ESPN yesterday saying like the SEC's going to enforce its rules. They're going to figure out a way to do it. I am hoping. Listen, and mind you, I've already said I want the kids to be able to up that if it were up to me,

I would let all of them play we wouldn't be going through this. And it would have been done months and months ago. But I actually want to see what happens if the TRO is upheld, but just for the NCAA, but then the SEC can do whatever it wants. I want to see that happen because I want to see what Greg Sanky is going to do, because this is a game of chicken between him. It's not what Greg Sanky will do. It's what LSU won't do at that point.

Yes. That's what I want to see. I want to see who flinches. I want to see who flinches. Because if the TRO is upheld, I bet you Missouri takes a couple players. I bet you Kentucky will take a couple of players. And I don't think you're going to see Georgia and Alabama probably take any players. But I do want to see if Greg Sanky is going to wave that big stick around.

Yeah, I think the schools, if the SEC is not included in any sort of injunction, if it's just the NCAA, I would bet the schools won't take any of these guys. They will be terrified. Andy, what'd you say, a game of chicken between a Mack truck and a moped? Pretty much. Pretty much. Especially if it's just one school. Now, as George mentioned, other schools have talked to some of these guys.

I don't think they're as far down the road. But all this stuff has to be decided. Like, rosters have to be turned in Friday. You're playing with who you're 105 has to be people who are students at your school as of Saturday. So you got to have it all figured out. guys. I don't know if you fully understand this, Ari, I'm sorry, Andy, because if you were a real writer, then you would fully understand. If I was, right, if I was a real writer, not just the talking head, I might understand it better. That's true. I saw that comment. It made me laugh so bad.

George, I thought I thought you were coming out in Ari for picking North Carolina wrong. Guys, I will tell you this as we go into more, the second half of the show and into picks this season. if I could do anything in the entire world, like in terms of sharpening a talent of mine, I would not sharpen my ability to talk into a microphone or to write or to report or do anything. If I could sharpen and be really good or elite at something, it would be projecting the future in sporting events. You would never see me again. I would disappear into the abyss and just I would never, and that's the other thing too. It reminds me of people too who are like, have you seen those Instagram clips of like,

I make $40,000 a week? and if you enroll in my $20 class, I'll tell you how to do it. It's like nobody who's making $40,000 a week is telling anybody how to do anything. So like I wish I could be a 85% game picker. And you think I would share with you people? Get out of here. No, you're just going to be put. It'll be you and your polymarket app all on your own.

I'm trying my best to be right, but I'm doing it like this is an exercise like of community. Like this isn't like some sort of insider trading. I'm glad you said that. But here's the thing.

We're about to try to project the future a little bit. But it's more of a projecting where you, your remote control needs to land this weekend. Because we've complained a lot about the quality of the week one schedule. I'm not going to lie. We have done a lot of complaining about the week one schedule. It's because it sucks. Yeah.

There are some very lopsided looking games here. The one silver lining I can find is that with this many potentially lopsided games, we're going to get one or two like what the hell just happened results. And what I want you guys to help me do is let's try to figure out and help the listeners and the viewers figure out where they should be aiming their remote controls. So they might catch one of these results. So I'm going to give you guys a list of 10 games, and I want you to pick two of them that you think might result in a giant upset. So here we go. Before you give us the games, can I go on a small mini rant about how the little ticker at the bottom should be helping you with that?

But it's gone. I missed the ticker. Go ahead. I missed the ticker, too. We're all old people, so of course we missed the ticker. But everybody else is like, you can just look at your phone. I don't want to look at my phone. I want to see the little thing highlight at the bottom.

I'm using my phone to tweet. I don't have time. Yeah, I want to see the score flip over when somebody kicks a field goal. I'm on Polly Market. Yeah. That's not going to happen on ESPN now because they've gotten rid of the ticker, at least until everybody complains in two weeks. Okay, 10 games.

I want each of you to pick two of these that you think is going to be a potential upset. Wisconsin, Notre Dame. George, you're going to get mad at this next one, but don't. Boise State. Oregon, Marshall Penn State, Toledo, Michigan State, Ohio, Nebraska, Kent State, South Carolina, Oklahoma State Tulsa, Florida, Atlantic, Florida, South Dakota State Northwestern, Texas State, Texas. Now, that last one, I don't think either of you're going to pick it. I know I'm not picking it, but I do want to talk about it for a second before we get to it.

It's a Texas state going to Texas. This is one where Texas Tech offered to buy everybody out so they could play Texas. No, it's going to be the Bobcats versus the Longhorns. Texas State entering the Pact 12 this year. They got a quarterback back that most group of six teams could not have kept. And that's a guy named Brad Jackson. And I am excited to see him go to DKR Memorial Stadium and play against the Longhorns. But I don't know if it's, I don't think that's going to be enough, guys.

I actually believe that this can be a competitive game because J.G. Kenny is 23 and 16 with three straight bowl wins. And this and this team, they are tough. They are going to be fast. They are going to be physical. And this is the type of game that Steve Sarkisian is starting the season. And he's going to want Arch Manning. He's going to want Cam Coleman. He's going to want this entire defense to be chomping at the bit from the beginning. But if this is one of them slow start, you could you could turn on at half time you're like why is texas only up by by by three points this can be a one-score game into the fourth quarter and we know how those types of things goes when when a team starts to believe that they can actually win that's when you can get in trouble and then have a bad bounce a fumble a tip ball and then now all of a sudden you're you're you're fighting for your life well j j kinney originally played at texas before he went to tulsa and uh and had a good career there. So there's a lot of little fun subplots in this game.

I think Texas is going to be fine here. Like you said, though, I think it could be competitive early because, one, Texas State has a really good quarterback. Two, we don't know exactly how Texas is going to start. But the thing I am most excited about for this game is we're going to see the debut of a very dynamic duo. we talked about a ton we think he's going to be much better this year than last year we think he grew last year cam coleman though when he came out of high school we were comparing him with jeremiah smith they're in the same class incredible physical attributes He goes to Auburn, though, and guys, the Auburn quarterbacks really struggle to get him the ball. You know, you said this thing, and I've been saying it too, where we directly compared Cam Coleman to Jeremiah Smith coming out of high school. Obviously, their two careers have veered in terms of trajectory. Jeremiah Smith went to a place that won a national championship in large part because of his production, but, you know, was probably more well-balanced than Auburn. Let's just say it that way.

when do we start comparing them head to head again now? Like I actually think that there is like a non-zero. It was after this catch. It was after that catch. And even though the reality is, I guarantee you that Deuce Robinson, Decorian Moore and about 20 other wide receivers have made catches like this in practice between spring ball and fall camp. That's just what great wide receivers do.

and they're in a situation where nobody is getting, getting hit, nobody is actually getting tackled. There's no pressure inside of there. So that was an amazing catch, but let's not overstated. It was just a practice catch. And even though it was a phenomenal. Yeah, but we've seen, here's the thing, George,

we've seen Cam make those catches in-game games. Because the guy's throwing the ball were not particularly accurate because he had to make him in games. I want to give a not a little bit of a hot take here. Okay. You guys know that I'm personally obsessed with Jeremiah Smith since the day he got on to campus and before. Yeah. I think there is a non-zero chance that Cam Coleman is selected in the NFL draft before Jeremiah this year.

Is that insane? Non-zero. I would agree with you that it is a non-zero number, that it is, it's unlikely, but there is a world where he comes out and is one. 100% unguarded and where like where you do have some some teams that are like we love jeremiah Smith but we think that there that these are two you know that this is a one a one B sort of situation where it's like that lebron d Wade and carmello draft where yes you would have liked to get lebron but if you end up with carmello or d Wade how are you going to be that upset well here here's

here's the thing. I think the better arch does, the better Cam does on that front, and vice versa. Vice versa. I think they're kind of inextricably linked. Now, if you're talking of fantasy football, it would be a handcuff situation. But this is a better

quarterback delivering this alien the ball. And I think that is what makes this so exciting. And I think that's what makes Texas fans so excited about what this year could be because they didn't really have a true wide receiver one last year. Now they do. And now Arch Manning is a year older and a year better.

So cannot wait to see this dynamic duo. How sure are you guys about Arch? I'm sure he's going to be better than he was last year. Sure. I believe that he will be better than he was last year. But the question is how much better and how much more consistent will it be? That's the thing I think the question about Arch is. There's no question about his talent.

There's no question about, you know, his ability to, run the football that he can make every single pass on the field. But there's a question about his consistency, about his spray chart and all of those things. So I'm still in the arch is very talented. He could turn out to be the greatest quarterback that we've ever seen in the history of quarterbacking, but he could also just be a, you know, like a very good player and not an elite all time type of player. If he's a very good player that are winning the national title this year.

If he's a very good player and he's got a very good receiver in Cam Coleman. then we have a very, very dynamic duo that's going to be really hard to stop. There is another dynamic duo, though, and it's possibly the best one. Jack and Coke, tailgate season is here. Make life easy. list. I've given you some time to think about it while we talked about the dynamic duo. Who, George Reister, out of that list, is on upset alert. My two teams that I picked to play in the national championship game, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, that is on upset alert for me. And I know that that's going to shock people. George, how could you? You've been speaking so highly about Notre Dame all year. Okay, yes, I believe everything I said about CJ Carr, about Marcus Freeman, everything in between, their offensive line. However, their only losses in the Marcus Freeman era have been early in the season,

where they lost to Northern Illinois, lost to Miami, Marshall. All of these things are like early season situations, which is the only reason why I believe that there's a question. And you got Colton Joseph over at Wisconsin, and Luke Fickle has put together good offenses. I'm sorry, excuse me, good defenses. It just has been the offense as the problem. And a large part of that has been because his quarterback hasn't been healthy. And now his quarterback is going to walk in the game healthy. And Colton Joseph was the only quarterback who had some real success against Indiana running the ball last year. And now he goes over

to Wisconsin. So you know if he's able to have success against Indiana, that he can possibly have success against this Notre Dame team. It's early in the season, and that's the thing that gives me a little bit of pause. Even though I do believe Notre Dame is going to win his game, they're just on an upset. Yeah, Ari and I both pick Notre Dame to cover in this game, but I'm also the same person who said that I think Luke Fickle's going to save his job at Wisconsin this year. I think they could be an eight-win team at Wisconsin. I just don't think this is one of the wins, but I believe that.

everything you're saying about this, George. And, you know, I hadn't, I guess I hadn't thought about the early season piece of it for Marcus Freeman, because you're right. It's Northern Illinois. It's Marshall. And then Miami and Texas A&M early last year. And they just get better and better as the season goes on. So it is kind of, if you're going to get them, get them now situation. But I, for some reason, and Ari, maybe, maybe you talked me into this the other day. I think the whole leave no doubt mentality, the Notre Dame skipping the bowl game and and basically saying next year starts now, I just don't think they're going to mess around this time.

I also think the profile of the game is different, because the, uh, George just saw these zero days since Ari's last mic issue graphic for the first time. Yeah. It happens a lot, George. But don't you think the profile of the game's a little bit different? I think Notre Dame got caught napping in those upsets.

And like, I think that they are less likely to get caught. And then Miami and Texas A&M are totally different. Those were playoff teams. Yeah. But Wisconsin might be much better than we're giving them credit for and just play a really good game. Like I think that that's on the table. But the fun thing about this segment, guys, is that no matter who we say, it's going to sound ridiculous,

but that's why we're trying to do it. Like, it sounds ridiculous right now. These spreads are massive. Like, most of these spreads are over 20 points. So, all right. George, what is your second upset alert team? It is my Oregon Ducks. So when I did my preview for this game, so mind you, I've picked Oregon to win a national championship this year.

And I believe that if Oregon had ever won a national championship, we would as a collective national media, we'll be talking about this team, this roster, the same way that we did Ohio State in 2024, where it just felt like an inevitability. However, Boise State has beaten Oregon three out of the four times that they played them. And two years ago when Ashton Genet was there, Oregon had to escape 37 to 34 and needed two special teams touchdowns, a kickoff return and a punt return to be able to win that football game. And that's the season when Oregon went undefeated and won a Big Ten championship first year in the Big Ten.

So it is something about this Boise State logo that they do not fear. Oregon. They do not fear Alton Stadium. This is a, this is a massive spread. And Spencer Danielson has done a good job of making this team believe his quarterback Maddox, Maddox. He's a third year starter. He's been in the playoff. He understands what it's going to be around him. So I am going to put Oregon technically on upset alert. I do believe, and I hope in my heart they will win this football game and win it by the appropriate amount of points. However, though, you can't ignore what history has told you in this series with Oregon and Boise State. So, guys, I was thinking about this game a lot because I do wonder if this is going to tell us

something about the evolution of group of six football. We have to call it group of six now because the Pac-12 is back, but, and Boise State's in it. But group of six football in this era, of college football because I suspect there might be a difference from two years ago in Boise State. Now, I will say this, Spencer Danielson did a really good job keeping this roster together. They're mostly playing guys that they bring back who were on the roster from last year. Now, they lost like Ty Benefills at LSU right now, the safety. But they did a really good job for the most part of keeping this roster together. But when you do lose a Thai benefit, like they didn't lose Ashton Genti before two years of,

ago, even though there were people coming after him, they didn't lose him. And that's what made that game so competitive. And I just, I don't know if they're going to be the same level of talent as they were two years ago against an Oregon team that like, like you said, George, they went 13 and 0. They won the big 10. They were the number one scene in the playoff. And they, and Boise State pushed them to their absolute limit. So I actually feel like this game's more of a, like a scientific experiment than a game. Yeah, because if, I mean, this game is meaningful to Boise in so many ways. Because if you think about the year, two years ago, them not being blown out by the number one

team in the country, the team that finished number one in the country, was crucial to them being in the college football playoff. So if you're Boise, you don't even need to win this game. You actually just need to keep this game close and respectable and then go win the Pack 12. and then you're likely, because of the name value and everything else, to get a seat at the table in the college football playoff. I'm very excited. I'm more excited about this game than I was before after hearing you, George.

The more I think about it, the more I think this might be interesting. I talked myself into a frenzy, dude. I was like, the team that I picked to win the national championship, and then I'm making a video. After I finish making the video, I'm like, oh, my gosh, I'm nervous about Saturday. I don't know if this is bad podcasting guys,

but Boise, Oregon was also one of mine. No, that's great. I'm not going to lie. This is the only overlap, I think. And this is one I think if we ask most fans, they'd point to this one too and say, I remember seeing this game two years ago. I'm excited to this game on Saturday.

Yeah, well, it's also the only game on the list that has a team that could conceivably make the playoff on the underdog side. Like, I mean, Boise could be a very good. good, just a very good team. Now, Oregon, like George pointed out, I think, is maybe the most talented team in all of football. And I think they, I think very highly of them the same way that you do, George. But in terms of like, could things get kind of weird?

It's kind of hard to like not pick the thing that we saw two years ago. You know, like we already saw this kind of happen. And I don't think Oregon's going to lose. But, you know, I think that it's so crazy. And the reason why I love the sports so much is that things that sound ridiculous on Wednesday afternoon might come into play on Saturday afternoon. I think that Western Michigan, Michigan is interesting. Now, they have a new coach, and I know that, you know, Kyle Whittingham is.

Michigan has a new coach. Western Michigan's got Lance Taylor back. Yeah. Lance Taylor, I think, is a good coach? But is it completely out of the realm that the quarterback that we've spent the entire offseason critiquing comes out. off and has a really slow start. Like the thing that was hard about Oregon, Boise State game was that like Dante Moore exists. And it's like hard to envision that Dante Moore is going to have a bad game.

Like Rocco Beck that Penn State exists. You know, I think that Anthony Calandria is going to be an adventure for Nebraska, but I know that he's going to be productive. In terms of the places that, you know, have high profile quarterbacks that have not yet played up to the potential. And that's not to say that the guy doesn't come out and is a Heisman finalist this year. I think he physically has traits that could get him in a position to be very good, but we have not seen things click.

I know Michigan won nine games last year. I know the coaching challenges that they faced last year. I'm not undermining any of that. But until we see Bryce Underwood click, is it really that out of the question to think that in the third quarter against Western Michigan, he has 97 passing yards, and they're in kind of a game. They didn't think they were going to be in.

That's definitely possible. It is, and I think that that's the biggest question surrounding Michigan, because we know what Kyle Whittingham brings to the table. And this is why I had him as the second ranked Big Ten head coach coming into this season. And people were outraged. They were like, how could you have him second? Well, because Kersignetti, he belongs at the top spot right now because of what he was able to do so quickly. And then his history of winning as well.

But Kyle Whittingham, look at what he did at Utah. This is a man who has built a physical, fast. strong, disciplined football team at Utah, who has competed at every level. They have made it to the Rose Bowl, made it a game against Ohio State, even though that they're, quote, unquote, outmatched in talent.

And then you think about what he was able to develop with zero-star guys like Lloyd, getting drafted in the first round by the Jaguars and so many other guys that were two, three, zero-star prospects and developed him. So now he has access to the highest level of recruits. And the only question that I think we're going to have surrounding this team in year one is the quarterback position. Is Bryce Underwood a good college quarterback at this point in time?

Is he ready to make all the throws and be disciplined and everything else? And I do hear everything about the he didn't have a quarterback coach last year. We know the turmoil was going on. So you get a mulligan there. but I do think that he has to come out and essentially play solid football. Just throw the ball in the flat. Don't try to make hero plays all the time because those will come and you'll be able to make those. Just play within the system first.

I am very intrigued by this. And I thought it was interesting that Kyle Whittingham named Tommy Carr, the backup officially this week. I think we all knew that in the spring. But they're excited about him. They're excited about what he can do. So, and I think part of that is also making sure that Bryce Underwood is, is sufficiently motivated that, you know, make sure that he is, he knows that there's that guy back there. Which team that's laying 27 and a half points has some questions about their quarterback. I think it's a good roadmap.

Yeah. So I think this is, we had Lance Taylor on the show. Like, that's a dude you'd run through a wall for. So I'm very, very interesting to see that game. It's Whittingham that makes me feel like this is not going to be an upset. Yeah, when you zoom out at all sounds right. That's why this is not on my list. What are your two, Andy?

My first one is Toledo, Michigan State. So if Jason Candle were still at Toledo, if he hadn't gone to Yukon, I might actually be picking Toledo outright in this game. But obviously Toledo has undergone a lot of changes. They are still going to be pretty good, though, I think. And that's what they're one of the Mac teams that really does a, a good job of that that program is funded well, is very well organized. Brian Blair was the AD.

He's gone to Syracuse before he left. He hired Mike Jacobs from Mercer. Mike Jacobs did a really good job building Mercer up as an FCS program. And I think there's a pretty bright future for Mike Jacobs in the FBS. And so I'm excited to see him against Pat Fitzgerald, who when last we saw him coaching in the Big Ten, didn't really have the fastball he had earlier in his career. Like, Pat Fitzgerald's success at Northwestern is undeniable. He was incredible at Northwestern.

He had them outpunching their weight so many times. He took them to the Big Ten title game a couple of times. 2020, the most recent time, he took him to the Big Ten title game. The 2020 results, not really, as history's told us, not really consistent with anything. So if we take the COVID year out, his last three full seasons at Northwestern, three and nine, three and nine, one, and eleven.

Yep. So he's got to answer some questions for us when he takes over at Michigan State. I think that's fair. And the candle leaving is the reason why I didn't pick this game, because if you look at the resume, right, It says upset because in 2024, Toledo beat Mississippi State 41 to 17.

And then in, and they beat. And they all, Toledo always had NFL dudes on the roster under campus. Always. Yeah. And they, they beat Pitt like 48, 46 as well. And then won eight games for four straight years. So you, so it's not like Toledo is unfamiliar with winning games against power. four teams. And this seems like the exact type of power for a team that they knock off.

Yeah. And also has to be done. Again, we don't know about Fitzgerald yet. And we don't know about Michigan State. You know, they were in a weird situation last year with Jonathan Smith. They made the decision to pull the rip court on Jonathan Smith after two years. So this is a program and transition. Athletic director just left. Like, I don't know. It's, I need to see Pat Fitzgerald show that in this era he can, he can win. It has to be noted that this game has the smallest spread of all of them. This is nine and a half. Yes.

So, like, it's not. Friday night game, by the way. Yeah, I think that. Weird things happen on Fridays. Yeah. But this is probably the most likely of them. This is the same stadium, by the way. We're on a Friday night in the season opener in 2023.

I think it was a Friday. It may have been a Thursday, but I think it was a Friday. Where Connor Stalin showed up in Manhattan glasses on the Central Michigan sideline. So, like, this is. Weird stuff happens at Spartan Stadium on Friday nights in week one. Stay tuned for an update on Conor Stallions and everything that's going on in the, I'm just kidding. I think he watches the show, guys. I'm pretty sure he does.

I'm one of the few people he's never had a confrontation with on the internet, so that's good. Yeah, I don't think he's got mad at me either. I'm one of them too. Okay. trolling him about the USC crowd, okay? And I tell Cody, he's standing across the room. I said, Cody, I'm trolling you on Twitter right now. Cody says, George, I don't see it. I don't see it. Are you sure that you tagged the right guy? I mean, are you sure you tagged the right Cody Kessler? So I'm going on looking.

I'm like, Cody Kessler, 6? And then I click on it. Cody had me blocked. he had me blocked on social media. What did you say about it when he played at USC? Bro, who knows? You know how long ago that was? I actually need to search it and see what I said.

I mean, I could have. I probably didn't. There's no way that I tweeted at him because there's, that's not something that I would have done. But talking trash about USC at some point in time, yes, I probably did. And he probably didn't like, he had me blocked. it was probably one of the most funny experiences, and I don't take things like that seriously.

So it didn't bother me, but I just thought it was very hilarious. And I thought I didn't hear this story. You guys have no idea how bad Andy wishes he could block me. Ah, you entertain me constantly. There's no reason to block. I don't block anybody, by the way. I never block it. Unless you are just straight up nasty, I will not block you.

I will mute you because I think it's more fun that you think I might. see it and I just don't even know you exist. Blogging people gives them a sense of value. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. So, all right, one more upset for me and then we're going to help Ari write a column. But this upset for me, this is just more of like a standing life rule more than an analysis

of this particular game. And it is South Dakota State heading to Northwestern. Now Northwestern has that beautiful stadium opening up this year. It's not opening yet. They're still going to play at that. the temporary lakefront stadium, which is also pretty freaking cool. But that's where this game's going to be. South Dakota State Jack Rabbit's coming in.

My one, you know, I have these rules for life, George, that I say like never complain about free food, never complain about free beer, never skip leg day. Another very consistent rule for life is never schedule any elite FCS opponent. You're just asking for trouble. Like Michigan, when they scheduled Appalachian State, why would you schedule the defending national champions. Like, what are you doing? Now, South Dakota State did not win the national title last year. That was Montana State. But South Dakota State won the previous two FCS national titles. I will give you a little history lesson. When this game was scheduled, it was way back

in 2018. So South Dakota State had not yet risen to the prominence that it has of the past few years. It had not yet become a truly dominant FCS program. They were coming off an appearance in the FCS semifinals. But at that point, if you're Northwestern, you're like, ah, we don't know if they're going to fall back down or not. Well, guess what? They didn't fall back down. And now, this is not a team that you don't want to pay a team like this to come to

your stadium ever. Yeah. I am excited about this. Well, actually, I would, the only way I could be more excited to, to see the outcome of this game is if Chip Kelly had to call the offense in that, in that hard hat and that construction outfit that he was wearing in some of the state. You know, the thing that is so true

about the statement you made, Andy, is that it doesn't matter how good that opponent is. Like, that does not register at all to, like, the people making fun of you for losing. Right. It doesn't register, but the problem is when you bring in these teams where the guys have all played in really

high stakes playoff games in the FCS, they're not the least been afraid of you. They don't care who you are. They're looking at you. It's like an opportunity. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's why, like, South Dakota State,

and obviously David Braun knows this, the Northwestern coach. He worked at North Dakota State. He had nothing to do with this. He didn't get hired until 2023 in Northwestern. So he had nothing to do with this. I'm sure he looked at this when he got the job a few years down there. I was like, crap.

I don't want to see these guys again. Like, but that's just how it goes. Like, you can't control what, what a couple ADs ago did, and that's what you got to live with. That's what you've got to deal with. So good luck to the Wildcats against the Jack Rabbits, who you should have never, ever, ever, ever scheduled. Good picks.

There's one more game that it just hit me in the brain right now, but that's that Fresno State USC game. You're such a UFC hater, George. Because Fresno State to USC is almost what Boise is to Oregon. Is Jay Cana walking through the door? Reggie Bush kind of clenched the Heisman against Fresno. That was a pretty good Fresno State team there that Reggie had that amazing game against. But no, I think that I think USC's going to be fine.

I think the discourse about USC and the crowd, it amuses me because USC starters looked awesome against San Jose State. I suspect they're going to look awesome against Fresno State. The crowd probably works itself out by the time Morgan shows up. but I do love that everybody's so mad about this. Lincoln Riley called it a false narrative. Like, it's not a false about it, Lincoln, we saw the picture. Hey, and then they, so you know that they claimed 51,244 people in the stadium, that that's what they said. But the way they do, that's based on tickets sold, right?

Not people who show up. Right, right. Now, I hear, okay, so I have quick points about this. I live in Los Angeles. It was hot as fish grease on Saturday. And there was no, and there is no shade in the Coliseum. Now, I... Except in that picture where the end half the stadium is shaded.

That's just one side. That's just one side. Yeah, as I say, not that time of day, not at noon. It depends on what time it is. Yeah. Yes, there's virtually no shade. And it is super hot and it was actually humid here. Now, with that said, I,

I will admit that USC fans are not, even though that they do have some diehard fans, they are not as committed as other schools are. And the excuse usually is, oh, my God, there's so much to do in L.A. And yes, there is a lot to do in L.A. But you know what? People don't have trouble showing up to the Dodger game in the heat. They don't, it is difficult to get to crypto. It's difficult to get to SOFA.

people still manage to get up in there. And we as people, we spend our time, energy, and our money in places that matter to us the most. So I do believe that USC football matters to a lot of people. It just doesn't matter to them the same amount that it matters to people in Eugene, in Clemson, in Athens, in, you know, in Stillwater, in wherever else. It just doesn't matter to them the same amount that it matters to USC. and it's okay to admit that. It's, it is, and that's what I've been saying. It doesn't, it doesn't make an Alabama fan a better person

because they care more about college football, nor does it make a USC fan a better person because they live in Southern California. Like, everybody's got their things, and it's okay. But we love college football here. And we're still going to get these jokes off. And you're going to make fun of you when 15,000 people show up to your season,

Where do you, where do you think the stock is at this point in time? I would say their stock is up 27% from when the day, the day Brian Kelly got fired. I would sell this stock because I picked Clemson to beat. LSU on Saturday. Well, in the game, I do not, but with all that said, I do believe that Lane Kiffin is a competent head coach. He's won a lot of games. He's coached at a lot of places.

He's learned under some really smart people. So because I have an upset, upset in that game for the first game, I'm going to sell the stock. But then after that, I'm going back to buying it because I'm going to buy it once on the cheap. I'm going to buy it on the way back. once everybody sells it. I'm going to buy it now because they're going to be good at football. Like we keep talking about LSU with all this other stuff and Lane Kiffin with all this

other stuff and there's a book coming out and all like. If we just limit it to football, they're going to be really good. Okay? I think they're going to be really good and I think they're going to make the playoff. So yes, I'm buying. So I had LSU on my buy tab. All right. Next one, Michigan.

It's kind of harder, right? I'm going to buy every one of these, but I'm buying them too. Yeah. I had them in my playoff. Okay. This is a team. And truthfully, all of their whole season hinges on one game mainly is the Oklahoma game. And yes, they have a rough schedule.

But if they beat Oklahoma, they're going to put themselves in a position to make the college football playoff. And that's why I'm. buying that that stock it feels a little speculative at this point but it's it's it's it's not like i'm buying berkshire hathaway stocks like i'm like this is like a twenty dollar stock and not a two hundred thousand dollar stock like buying or selling ohio state interesting i had mine i know they they love being compared to a penny stock compared to ohio state's blue chip stock i'm not necessarily sure i agree with you people are going to love it Love that.

But. I'm the current price either. I think that they have some. I bought it. What else you want me to do? I think it's going to turn into that. Yeah. Yeah.

I don't agree with George's assessment that it's a penny stock. I think that it's actually quite valuable because they are not that far removed from the national championship. Yeah. I think that. if we are in a, the only way that you could make money on the Michigan stock, in my opinion, is if they make the playoff.

And I don't think they're going to make the playoff. So I would, I would not want to hold on to that through the year. That's my thought process. And I also had them, you can't buy a Michigan stock in the same episode where I put them on upset alert, guys.

It's not good for me. That's probably true. I'm a contradictory asshole. I don't want to try to be one. All right. What's next story? Here's a really good segue because George brought this up, but buy or sell Oklahoma this year. God dang, stop giving me buys.

You might buy everybody. You know how high I've been in Oklahoma. But you know how high I've been in Oklahoma all off season. Like they are probably going to be better than they were last year and they were tend into and made the playoff against a really talk schedule last year. I'm going to sell this Oklahoma stock because I don't think it can get, I don't think it goes higher than it is. because a lot of people are expecting Oklahoma to make the college football playoff.

And I think that that's their ceiling. I don't think that they're a national championship threat. I think that they're going to be a good football team with a good defense. And it's a lot of their ceiling is going to be hinged on John Mateer's growth as a passer. That's what it's that's what it's tied to. So I am selling this stock because I don't think it's going to make me any money. later. The only thing it can possibly do is go down from a good football team. Yes, that's exactly how I feel, George. I think that they are already priced in as a

playoff team in order for them to make money on the stock. They have to not only make the playoff again, but they've got to advance in it. And I'm not sure I'm 100% there, especially considering the fact, Andy, that you can't buy everybody. And I think you're going to start selling some stuff. I feel like I bought low with Oklahoma. I feel like I bought lower than Yeah, you're priced in, buddy. You're a long-term investor. Yeah, I was going to say, I've been long on Oklahoma for a while. He'll be getting dividends. The next team he's going to list is like probably the team I picked to win the national championship.

No, no. I'll make it easy based on just I have some teams that I'm selling. Okay. And this one will be easy. If you still have stock in this, you've already lost your ass. Florida State. Sell! Wait, I picked this cover because I want you to run a mile.

Well, that's not a real. Now I'm the contradictory asshole. Yeah. No, that's not a real. real pick, though. You just did it because you want to see me suffer. I don't think that that's your analysis. But I don't know, George, if you think that this could be a good buying opportunity as a result of how cheap it is, maybe, but I don't think that they're going to be doing anything this year. I am going to sell Florida State. I mean, it's already, the stock is already not expensive.

I watched that entire New Mexico State game and I left with high concerns about Florida State. And they got SMU this week. And then they did SMU this week. They got Alabama. So, like, there's no, I mean, they beat Alabama last year. It feels highly unlikely that they're going to be able to beat Alabama this year. And if they lose to SMU and Florida State, there's no way that the stock gets back up higher than it is now. There's no possible way. This is not a money-making experience except for Mike Norvell.

I wish I have bought last week before the game because, dude, what they did to NC State should be, they should be thrown in jail for what they did because CJ Bailey, I didn't think that there was a possible way that it would be that rough in game one and it was bad. Yeah. Andy, a 23 play 12 minute drive after you five, finally got your first little tiny shred of momentum in the game is the most disrespectful, just, I don't, emasculating thing I've ever seen in. I mean, the good news is, is that if you pick 15 teams or 16 teams or wherever,

I just gave you, River, you'll have to count it up for me at the end. I'm not good at math. Then you bought all of them, then you are going to make some money, I think, but, you know, you might lose some too. I think that, like, I'm going to try my best and no offense to you guys. I love you both. You didn't help me at all. I put my entire net worth in the market.

I am not liquid at all right now. Andy is the guy who has zero dollars in monopoly before he reaches boardwalk. Which I actually think is the correct strategy in the game. But like, there are going to be teams that are, like, I think that the subjectivity of how you would value their stock right now makes this more difficult. I'm going to just approach it from like what they did last year. Like for instance, like Georgia to me, I think is priced as one of the most valuable companies in the entire world, and I think that everybody feels like they're inevitable and maybe that they are.

But like if you were to buy the stock going into this year, like you have to get to the semis, I think, to cash that ticket. So like I would consider maybe selling that, not because I don't think Georgia is going to be good, but because of what they need to accomplish to make money is a higher bar than other people. You know, Texas is very expensive. A lot of people are going to sell that because they don't think that they're going to do it. You know, Miami is expensive. They play the national championship game last year. Do you think they're going to go back there? Are they going to just, you know, they haven't won the ACC ever.

So, like, who knows? Like, these are just like, you have to be the bad guy in some. And I want to tell you one that I disagree with both of you on. I think I'm going to sell Indiana. And I guess, like, maybe that just sounds like I'm doubting. I agree. We're not doubting Signetti ever again. It's not that we're going to doubt that as a show.

So to me, buying Indiana means to me buying them as a playoff team again. Like, like, it doesn't mean that they're. I buy it. I don't know. I'm going to value. I'm not buying them as a threat to win this year because in because Indiana, I have described them as new money. They are college football's new money program. They are, they are the people who won the lottery and ended up being able to afford to live in the gated community.

And now they over here showing up at the, at the dinners, drinking out of the wrong cup and, you know, eating dinner with the salad fork and everything else. And now, mind you, they earned it. They have every right to talk all the trash they want. They have every single right. However, though, Indiana's expectation that they're going to, like so many Indian fans have been under the comments and under the videos and everything. Oh, my gosh, you're doubting them. We're going back to back and all this stuff.

It's like, you just got here to the party. You don't fully understand how this works. You have not experienced. That's why I'm selling. George. That's why I'm telling. Heartbreak. So I think that we've gotten to a point with Kurt Signetti

where I think it's all accepted, especially on this show that Kurt Signetti is a genius. He's one of the greatest coaches in college football, thought the best won. What he did is the most remarkable thing in the history of the world. We all know all those things and we accept those things. But I think that there's this notion that they're like never going to lose again because you can't doubt Kurt Signetty.

And it's like winning championships is really hard. That's what made it really impressive last year. This has been incredibly fun because see how fun it is when you get to talk about football, and that is what we're going to do for the next three solid months. Maybe occasionally we'll talk about a courtroom, but hopefully never. Hopefully it's just football. Thank you so much. Thank you to George Reister III.
