Starting point is 00:00:00 on tonight's college football playoff instant reaction show the miami hurricanes beat the ohio state buck guys 2414 to advance to the semifinals the college football playoff number two goes down arie used his mulligan to pick miami to cover he joined me on that side because we thought ohio state might not have seen this level of physicality He might not have seen this level of athlete all season. Turns out it made a big difference. Ari and I break it all down right now on our college football playoff. Instant reaction show presented by Modelo.
Starting point is 00:00:44 Welcome to Andy and Ari on 3. An instant reaction show presented by Madelo. Miami has just beaten Ohio State 2414. Ari, you are in Jerry World right now. Did Miami look as dominant on that last drive in person as they did on television? Yeah, my column is being edited right now, Andy. And the column basically is this is Miami. This Miami team is Mario Cristobal's blueprint brought to life.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Like if you know anything about Mario Cristobal and his attempt to build Oregon, what he did for Alabama under Nick Saban, and what he's done since the day he got to Miami, it's to bolster the offense and defensive lines. And in this game, Miami's offensive and defensive lines were the story of the game. In the first half, Ohio State came back a little bit
Starting point is 00:01:33 in this third quarter, early fourth quarter, and then Miami with their offensive line, shut it down. Ohio State was sacked six times the entire regular season. Miami sacked Julian Sane five times. And at the end of the game, they ran the ball down Ohio State's throat with the game on the line, and Ohio State had nothing up front to stop it.
Starting point is 00:01:53 And you see his, vision if they're going to win a national championship and they're going to get to a place where they can be taken seriously as a national contender they're going to play Ohio State on a natural field and beat the shit out of them and that's what they did here in Arlington today Andy. Well, they are a national title contender because Miami can beat
Starting point is 00:02:08 anybody left in the field. If you can beat this team, you can beat anybody left in the field. Sean Kim 9580 says both Annie and Ari thought that Bette MGM had it right wrong. Go Keynes. No, try to keep up. We both pick Miami to cover in this game. So, yeah,
Starting point is 00:02:24 And for the reasons we said, I said them earlier, I had Miami all along, you used your mulligan on them, but we said this earlier that we're not sure Ohio State had dealt with this level of pass rush. We're not sure Ohio State had dealt with this good of an offensive line. I think Indiana probably was similar, and Indiana beat them similarly. But what Miami did to them, especially in the first half with that pass rush, and then that last drive was like you just said it was Mario Cristobal's blueprint come to life and I did a I did a column this week on how each of these teams that are in the playoff
Starting point is 00:03:05 kind of won in the transfer portal and how it helped him get there and I went back and rewatched our interview with Mario Cristobal from September and this is this tonight was an example of exactly what he talked about because the way he's built this roster the best players, the very best players on the roster. So we're talking about Rubin Bain, we're talking about Francis Maui Noah. We're talking about Malachi Tony, signed out of high school. Then there are these one-year rental type players, Carson Beck. Then there are these players that they get from the transfer portal who have lots of eligibility left.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Now, Akeem Messador, that was three years ago. They got him huge game tonight. Shamar Brown was a young player who spent two seasons at North Dakota State and had three, three years of eligibility left and came in seemingly out of nowhere on that last drive. But it's funny because that first Shamar Brown run, I somebody was standing in, one of my kids was standing in front of the TV. And I said, okay, they're going to run duo out of the pistol. And the kid moved and they're in the pistol.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And I'm like, oh, they're going to run duo out of the pistol. And there it was. Andy, no grab ass place from Miami today that I can recall. No, everything you made fun of. Now, I was actually a little worried about that wide receiver screen on that was to, I believe he said, C.J. Daniels and Malachi, Tony had the block that sprung him. That was on a third down, really key third down on the last drive. I even thought that was a little too fancy. But no, it was, it was perfect.
Starting point is 00:04:39 It was a great call by Shannon Dawson. I mean, Ohio State, I don't know if they defended this game the right way. They were playing off on the receivers a lot and kind of giving them underneath stuff and allowed Miami to dink and dunk. But, you know, listen, Andy, when you think about the last 20-some years, and I wrote this, the 2002 Ohio State game, even on our preview show on Wednesday, we spent a lot of time at the end of the show, remembering Keith Jackson's intro to the BCS National Championship game in 2002, or, 2002. And, like, honestly speaking, this game felt more reminiscent to another game in the desert that happened four years later, which is Ohio State, Florida. They came into that game as a heavy favorite. Everybody thought Ohio State was going to win. They had all these great players.
Starting point is 00:05:21 They were undefeated. And then Ohio State did not have the athletes up front to keep up with Florida's defensive line and they got blown out. Now, Ohio State didn't get blown out in this game. They had the ball down three in the fourth quarter with the chance to go win it. But at the same time, if you watch that game, I mean, Miami's Front Seven, which we had been talking about all week, stole the show. Like Akeem Messador and Rubin Bain, it's going to be really hard.
Starting point is 00:05:46 hard for anyone to block these guys. So, and, and, and the officials were, take a minute, too here, Andy, to acknowledge that, like, Miami has been waiting for this for 20 plus years, man. Yeah. This is a huge win. Yes, huge win. I mean, the last time Miami was on this stage was against Ohio State in that
Starting point is 00:06:05 Fiesta Bowl that we watched the intro for earlier today. And the officials, it appeared, really wanted to get back to the hotel to watch Ryan C. because they were not throwing flags at all. Yeah. I got to say, if they'd been calling, holding tighter for most of this game, this score would be very lopsided because Ohio State got away with a lot in the first half. And I texted you and producer River.
Starting point is 00:06:34 I said, if they ever call holding on Ohio State's offensive line, it's going to change the complexion of this game. And that's exactly what happened because Ohio State gets to the ball down three. they get called for a hold and all of a sudden a second of a second of 20 and that was the end of that. Yeah. You know, listen, I've seen a lot of
Starting point is 00:06:54 Ryan Day crapped his pants in the comments here. And I don't think that's the case at all. I mean, football is very complicated a lot of the times and what's going to happen is hard to predict. But if you get into a game where your tackles can't block their ends, like football becomes really simple.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Like, that's what happened here. Now, I mean, we can nitpick Ryan Day, we can nitpick him and say, why didn't you call a timeout before the two-minute timeout? Why did you save that timeout at 1.30 and then let them score instead of just calling the timeout at 1.30 and trying to play more defense. But at that point, you're pretty much cooked. I thought Ryan Day did a good job. Remember, he took over play calling because Mike Hartline is now the USF head coach. My cartline's still there. But Day took over play calling for this game. Brian Hartline, his brother, Mike, sorry. But yeah. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Ryan Day took over playcalling for this game, and I thought he did a good job adjusting for the first half to the second. The first half, look, the game plan they made was not good. The game plan they made was getting Julian San killed. They went to more 12 personnel, which is one back, two tight ends, more gap scheme runs, which is the pin and pull type stuff, where you have a down block and then you have pullers coming around, and then a quick game passing that allowed Sane to get the ball out much faster,
Starting point is 00:08:11 and he's not sitting there just waiting to get destroyed. I thought they did a good job in the second half adjusting to what Miami was throwing at them but I thought Miami and Shannon Dawson and really just the Miami offensive line there was a play in that because the last drive was something completely different
Starting point is 00:08:28 than anything else Miami had done in the second half. Miami's offense had actually not been very effective in the second half. That drive was really great. There was one of the Shamar Brown runs where, and this is, Miami's done this,
Starting point is 00:08:43 this season. They did it against Notre Dame. They did it against Florida. They did against Florida State. They've done this in games that were somewhat close and they needed to pull away or they needed to put them away. And you see it when the bat gets hit maybe two yards after the line of scrimmage. And then Francis Maui Noah just comes and pushes the pile for six more yards. I mean, it was, it was wild. And that's what I knew the game was over. As soon as they did that, I knew the game was over. Yeah. That was a really, really good performance. And, like, I know that we spent a lot of time talking about Miami's inclusion in the CFP. And there was a moment there for a few weeks where it felt like they weren't even going to get into this thing. Could you imagine not getting this team in? This is a team that I think we literally win the whole thing.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Yes. So, yeah, like, if you have lines like that, man, you know, I don't know, like their offense isn't very potent. You know, that pick six there in the second quarter was a killer. Can we talk about that? Kianti Scott coming back because I was trying to remember what his injury was and when it happened. And the first news story out of Kianti Scott's injury, which I believe was a foot injury, it happened in November, late November. The first news story said Kiante Scott thought to be lost for the rest of the season with an injury. He came back for that Texas A&M game. He is so important to this defense. I mean, you watch that pick six.
Starting point is 00:10:13 that is film study that is knowing exactly what that that motion I believe was max claire the tight end goes in motion that tipped it off for him and you see kiante scott trigger the second max claire goes in motion it was awesome it was incredible yeah and the second that julian sand you know dropped back to throw that you knew it was a touchdown the other way and it took a 50 plus yard reception from jeremiah smith that got ohio state into the red zone and turned it into a touchdown for Miami. And, like, you know, we'll see how their offense stacks up against Georgia. But by the way, Andy, we're 10 minutes into this video.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Carson Beck is playing Georgia. Yes. It's wild. Landed to lose it? It hasn't. And so Carson Beck's stat line, by the way, almost identical to the Texas A&M stat line. Yeah. Pretty accurate, not many yards, but didn't throw any picks.
Starting point is 00:11:10 He was 19 of 26 for 100. 38 yards. That's only 5.3 yards for attempt. One touchdown, zero interceptions. And they went deep a few times, but it was all safe going deep. It was all one-on-one coverage. Carson Beck's going to throw it over the guy's
Starting point is 00:11:27 head if it's even close. And so they're not going to take these chances. And Carson Beck so far in this playoff, they've not asked him to do anything crazy, but he also hasn't made any mistakes that could hurt them. And he's made some big throws he made some big third down throws tonight he did you know when he had delivered the ball
Starting point is 00:11:49 it felt like moon shots sometimes there was like a ball was in the air i don't know if it felt like that on tv but here it was like the ball was still in the air four seconds later um but people were open and they did a really good job offensively of scheming guys um short quick routes outside and uh you know they moved the sticks like Miami moved the ball throughout the entire game much easier than I thought. Like, I think we knew that scoring on this Ohio State defense, which, by the way, Andy, fun stat, they were the first team in college football since the television was invented
Starting point is 00:12:19 to not allow 17 points in any of their first 13 games in a college football season, which is wild. Like, that's like mid-30s, right? And then Miami had 14 points in the second quarter. One was a defensive, you know, score. But, like, it is, it was really well done, I thought, on both sides of the ball. defense was hitting hard.
Starting point is 00:12:40 They were arriving at the football. Yeah. I just thought of something. You just said Carson Beck's going to play Georgia. Should we wait for the Georgia Ole Miss game first? Should we wait for that to happen? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:51 No, I got ahead of myself. I forgot about the game. I'm so excited about the rematch. But yes, you're right. We shouldn't do that yet. Ole Miss is a smaller point spread underdog than Miami was in this game. Yeah. In Miami won this game by 10.
Starting point is 00:13:04 That's on me. That's on me. It almost feels like it's written in the stars, though, man. come on uh you know we'll see i have i have old miss on the points tomorrow so i'm expecting a really good game and maybe old miss will we'll pull it off but i i think more you to cover but this is going to be fun though either way because miami can beat either of those teams if it plays the way it did yeah somebody read wrote in the comments here andy already read the disney script i sure did i've been i've been i've been talking about disney movies all week and
Starting point is 00:13:34 maybe it's a different disney script that is going to come true like either a disney script of, you know, a team scorn after losing their coach, you know, banding together and playing hard and winning a game against Georgia, or Georgia winning the game and just playing Carson Beck again. I don't know which one it's going to be, but I think that Miami belongs on the same field with whoever wins that game in the SEC. And, man, I am so impressed by what they've built here. And I thought that Miami's season was a success coming into today. Holy crap, it's a unequivocal success now.
Starting point is 00:14:07 And obviously, when you get this close, two wins away from winning a national championship, you advance in this tournament, you're not satisfied to be here. But let me tell you, the personnel people that I spoke with on the Miami side at Media Day, when I was schmoozing with them yesterday, were very confident that Miami on tape, you know, would stack up very well. They thought maybe even knew that they were going to win, much like you said in 2006, that Florida story you shared. And they did it, man.
Starting point is 00:14:36 And they did it in the exact way that you had to beat Ohio State, getting after Julian Sane, relentlessly rushing the passer, controlling both lines of scrimmage, and doing it on both sides of the ball. I think this is like the Mario Cristobal fantasy coming to life. It is. This is exactly the way he built this team and exactly what he wanted. I guarantee you that drive was why he did it this way. That last drive is why that that is what he wants his team to be able to do. And when you can do it to a team this talented, you can do it to anybody. Because the Ohio State team that Miami just beat is the most talented team in the field
Starting point is 00:15:14 or was the most talented team in the field. They're not in the field anymore. Yeah. Miami can beat somebody who's left. This is an interesting point. There have been five teams in the 12-team playoff error that have had a buy week in our 0-and-5. Yep. Now, that stat is a little skewed because two of the teams,
Starting point is 00:15:34 that had buys last year were heavy underdogs. But there is something to be said about whether, you know, you want this. But everybody, every buy team was the favorite this year. And so I'm, I'm fascinated to see what happens tomorrow. I'm going to be at the Orange Bowl, bright and early. So I am, I think I need to let you get to the press conference. I'm going to get to bed. They're still celebrating on the field, Andy.
Starting point is 00:15:57 So I think I've got some time. Yeah, I don't know. Can you see the, the board there, There's confetti coming down. Oh, yeah. We're good. But yeah, congratulations to Miami. I don't think it can be said enough.
Starting point is 00:16:10 We talk about teams knocking at the door. I don't want to hear this crap about, you know how many times I heard in the press box tonight from other reporters? Do you really trust Mario Cristobal to win a game? That is not how football works. If you have good players, you're going to break you eventually. Miami. You know what I trust to win a game?
Starting point is 00:16:27 Francis Maui Noah, Ruben Bain, Akeem Sederer, Malachi, Tony, Bryce Fitzgerald, You know who people didn't win a big game last year? Ryan Day, and then he won like seven in a row. So like it's, it's, you know, the way that it goes is the, you know, the sport has ebbs and flows. I think it's really cool that one of the prominent brands from my childhood is back in the spotlight. Mario is a hell of a coach and he's going to be there for a long time.
Starting point is 00:16:53 And I think Miami, you know, you waited a long time. I really like it when teams. Think back to championship Saturday. When we get the text, hey, Mario wants to come on the, show to make his case one more time like think about the the emotional swing from that to this where they're politicking like hell to get in and then they get in and now they're proving that they deserved it because i think he knew i think he knew in our dms and uh coming on our show that he had something special he had something that could win games in the postseason now obviously
Starting point is 00:17:29 every coach wants to make the cfp but mario chrystal ball never once said we're happy to be here. Like, he has always been very upfront about, you know, playing for keeps, winning, advancing in this tournament, proving that Miami belongs. And, like, when you think about some of the old U teams, I mean, you think about some of their best players that they've had, who comes to mind? Like Ed Reed and Sean Taylor and Andre Johnson and Kellen Winslow and Jeremy Shockey and Willis McGahy and Frank Ford. The only two linemen that come to my mind are Warren Sapp and Vince Wilfork. Like, he's not trying to bring the U back. He's trying to. He's trying to to make Miami relevant.
Starting point is 00:18:05 You do not know your history. You never heard of Cortez Kennedy? Good God. No, of course. No, I know. But when you actually think about all the big time Miami players from the O one and O2 teams, like linemen don't come to my head. Maybe it's because I was a kid back then, but they just don't. Vince Wolf. Yeah. You never heard of Brett Romberg,
Starting point is 00:18:22 maybe? That was a center on the team. I've heard of these people. I've heard of these people, but who are their stars? Did Brett Romberg have a huge role in the U documentary? He was Canadian. But you know what I'm saying? like he's not trying to bring the U back and have them play and, you know, with the theatrics and all the things that they used to do.
Starting point is 00:18:41 He's trying to make Miami relevant while respecting the past. He's doing it in a different way. These Miami teams are done the old-fashioned way through recruiting. Who are Miami's first two tent pole recruits under Mario Cristobal? If you don't know, I'll tell you. Ruben Bain and Francis Maui Noah. Well, Francis Bion was the second year. Ruben Bain and Wesley was the eighth were the first two.
Starting point is 00:19:03 But they both were, like, Francis Maui Noah came to games when Miami was losing in year one and stayed committed. Like these are like the two big time guys and it's like who showed up tonight? Who showed up tonight? Middle of the road once says Jeremiah Smith picked the wrong team. Perhaps the most amazing thing about this is that Jeremiah Smith had a Jeremiah Smith game and Miami still beat Ohio State. Jeremiah Smith had seven catches for 157 yards, a touchdown on a fourth down that was amazing, and Miami still won. Yeah. Yeah, the pick the wrong program thing is funny.
Starting point is 00:19:44 He has won a national championship and things are going pretty well for him. But I know that part of this, too, like, I wrote a story. I asked a question early in the week of Jeremiah Smith, Andy, about picking the program that he picked. and what it meant for his childhood, the team he grew up being around and what, you know, him being on the other sideline would have meant to Miami. Like, there has to be a small piece of him that is, I mean, wow, like my team that I didn't commit to because I didn't think was far along enough just beat me. Like, that's a thing.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Like, I think that Miami fans should celebrate that. So, you know, this sport, I think we're going to find, too, Andy, that the same teams might not just be the ones that win it every year. And like, hell, what if we're, you know, if we're, you know, few weeks away from a Miami-Indiana national championship game or a Miami-Texas Tech National Championship game that could happen and I'm excited to see how it plays out just like everybody drew it up congratulations to the Keynes big day of football tomorrow I'm going to get some sleep I might I might stay away till midnight but I'm going to get some sleep I had to do it one time
Starting point is 00:20:47 you did have to do it there's the you there's Luther Campbell there's Uncle Luke all right when next we see you I will be at Hard Rock Stadium. It will be after Oregon and Texas Tech. We will see if the buy curse continues. Because that's yet another. Well, this actually, this is the one game where the favorite is the team without the buy. So we'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:21:18 But Oregon, Texas Tech, tomorrow, Orange Bowl, Alabama, Indiana, the Rose, Ole Miss George and the Sugar. We get three tomorrow. We get three of them tomorrow. Three. Three. By the way, I sent Ari a picture when the fourth quarter started. And then Jeremiah Smith kind of passed. I was like, was that Jeremiah or the fourth quarter?
Starting point is 00:21:37 Okay, we'll see you guys tomorrow. See tomorrow.
