This is an instant.
This is an instant reaction miracle edition of Andy Nariang 3 presented by Polly Markets.
I am at the swamp, but we got to talk about what happened to the big house, Ari.
Hank Brown hits Reese Vander Z.
the clock has expired.
No extra seconds.
Iowa beats Michigan 20 to 19.
No extra seconds, Andy.
Is that a ball don't lie scenario from Western Michigan?
Or is that like something we've moved on past?
I don't know what it is,
but it almost feels like it's poetic justice.
I don't think the wider fan base has moved past that.
I think they are very much,
there is some, I don't know if they call it poetic justice
or what you would call it right now.
But this is a really just fascinating way for that game to end because the clock hitting zero.
I mean, like Iowa went on a 75-yard drive to win this game, Ari.
Who in the world would have predicted that?
Yeah, I mean, especially if you were paying attention to what happened on Iowa's previous possession.
Iowa was deep in Michigan territory.
They were facing a fourth and six and they attempted to kick a field goal.
Like their offense was so hopeless to their coaching staff that instead of trying to get a first.
down that was only six yards away. They attempted to cut a, kick a field to get a five point lead to a two point lead and missed.
Like, that's how they felt about their offense. And I understand that Iowa has won a ton of games in the
past on special teams and doing things the old fashioned way. And when I say old fashion, I mean pre-World War II way.
But I was absolutely offended by that decision. I was like, if you're not going to even try to get the six
yards there, then why are we even playing the game? And somehow Kirk Ferrence figures it out, like, should we just never question this
man ever again.
No, no, no.
You can question him all you want because he would have never done this if he didn't have to.
Like, they would have tried to figure out a way to kick a field goal there if there had been
time left.
But there was two seconds on the clock when they snapped the ball.
They went 11 plays 75 yards in a minute 46.
Like that is the most un-Iowa thing ever.
But they had to do it because their backs were against the wall.
But can I make a suggestion?
Do that when you don't have to?
Yeah, maybe pretend it's like.
that when it's not like that and you might score more points on the regular yeah i mean like they
went down the field with ease and of course too andy the final play of the game the hank brown put
it the perfect ball out there it looked like a high flying offense it looked like a team that i mean
that that wasn't an easy that wasn't an easy reception or pass that was an incredible incredible incredible
moment unbelievable unbelievable unbelievable in that we didn't think i was
would be here, but I will host Ohio State next week, Ari.
Like, they can take control of the Big Ten race.
Yeah. No, I mean, Iowa, you know, this is also kind of like maybe an FU to you too,
because you've been so Iowa forward for the last year and a half and you had the goal to pick
Michigan before the game.
And they're like, you know what, Andy?
If we're going to win, we're going to do this despite you.
If we can't even have our number one supporter on our side before a game like this,
and we're going to go show you. We're going to spit in your eye.
And that's what they did.
Do you want to hear the ultimate, the final touchdown hit the over?
Yes, I know.
There were a lot of people who were on the underneck game that were very upset about what happened.
And, you know, listen, I don't know that anybody was playing the over in that game.
But, you know, that is the unfortunate part of these things.
And if you were one of those people, let me tell you, I've been in your shoes very, very often.
As recently as earlier this morning when Tennessee scored a,
touchdown at the end of the game to cut a 10-point lead into a three-point lead.
So this is a, I mean, this is a gut punch for Michigan, especially because I feel like
they've figured some things out with Bryce Underwood, like as critical as we were after the
Western Michigan game, it felt like they called a good game for him against Oklahoma.
They figured some more stuff out against U-TEP.
And in this game, even against a really good defense, I thought he threw one bad interception,
but he played pretty well.
And they did, like that's the touchdown of JJ Buchanan is exactly the way Bryce Underwood should be throwing touchdowns against good defenses in the Big Ten.
It was exactly what you want.
You want to roll him out, get him loose on the outside, and have a chance to throw the ball or run the ball.
That's exactly what you wanted.
And so it's like, okay, you figured this all out.
You have this game in hand.
And then your defense collapses against a team that under no circumstances should.
ever be able to march the ball 75 yards on you in two minutes?
Yeah, you know, I think that there was kind of like they're getting away with it, feel to it,
where it's like you know if you have eyes and you watch the game that they are limited offensively.
And I think sometimes even the box scores can lie.
276 yards passing, 9.9 yards attempt, two touchdowns like Bryce Underwood didn't statistically have a bad game.
But you pay that money and you bring him to Michigan to elevate your offense,
not to play in Big Ten West style games.
And the fact of the matter is they scored 19.
points. They had the game one when Iowa went for it at the end and they couldn't move the ball enough to
soft the gain away. And you have to ask yourself the question. It's like, is this the Michigan plan?
Is the Michigan plan to play Iowa football or did you bring this quarterback in there to do something
for your offense that makes it feel like you don't have to play these types of games? And I think that
that's the number one question. So that sounds like a column to me. I'm sorry. Florida just
just picked off Trinidad Shameless. So it's pretty loud here in the swamp right now. Yeah, yeah. You're in the
swamp and I'm watching it right here buddy did Florida just foot a 50 burger on
Ole Miss are they back is that we'll do that a video another video that's our next
but we right now can we can we talk about the Reese Vander Z catch I mean that absolutely
that is an incredible catch in the most high pressure situation possible and it's it's funny
I wish all games are played on natural grass obviously but those rubber pellets in the
filter really make it easy to see if somebody is in bounds when they
catch a ball and watching those things spray up on the replay. It's like, okay, there's going to be
no officiating chicanery, no replay booths chicanery here. And look, they're both big 10 teams.
It's a big 10 replay booth. I don't think that's going to happen. But you could see very clearly
he's in bounds when he catches that ball. And it was just an incredible catch. And Iowa having a
playmaker like that, because he had another touchdown catch earlier in the game, are we,
are we ready for like a high powered Iowa offense?
Because I could kind of, I could get used to that.
I would enjoy that.
Yeah. I'm trying to think it's like when you are watching a comic book movie,
not that I'm familiar with them,
but like I do know it's like at the beginning,
the hero realizes they can shoot venom out of their wrist.
And they're like, oh my God,
what if I do this all the time?
Like maybe that could happen.
But like it's just the thing that I just think is so fascinating
is that it's been very easy over the years to beat up on Iowa.
for their offensive ineptitude at times
and to beat up on Kirk Ferrence for, you know,
doing things like he did that make you want to slap yourself in the face,
which is kicking a fuel goal down by five points with less than three minutes in the game.
But what did Iowa do in this game, Andy, that they always do,
special teams touchdown.
What do they do?
They pinned Michigan deep a few times.
Like, they're special teams.
And the way that they play the game is just, it's miraculous.
Now, you know, Iowa has always been, you know, like one step away from the playoff.
But, Andy, when I'm looking at the schedule here, I see Ohio State coming to town next weekend.
And that's a home game.
So it'll be interesting.
I don't think they're going to win.
But then they've got Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, and Nebraska.
There isn't a single team if they can beat Michigan on the road, but they can't beat if they lose Ohio State.
And if they're a one lost team and they're one loss of Ohio State, what does that sound like to you?
What does that sound like?
That's a playoff team.
P word, P word.
But by the way, Ari, their schedule is hard enough that they don't need to be a,
one lost team. They can be 10 and two. Yeah. So look at this. I don't know if I agree 100% with that,
but I do. I guess depending on how Michigan, if Michigan continues to win and has a good year,
then maybe that that's the case. But I don't, the only other ranked team that's see how good
Washington is. Let's see how good Nebraska is. My guess is this schedule will be good enough that if
they go 10 and 2, they're going to be in good shape. Yeah. So, but they are in a position right now that, you know,
they were kind of in last year,
but now they're off to a good start.
And if Michigan continues to win games,
then maybe it'll get even more advantageous.
I'm very curious, Andy,
because I think that Ohio State's offensive line
and defensive line got pushed around a little bit at times
in the blowout over Illinois today.
I'm very curious if that style of football
is going to look like next weekend in Kinnick Stadium
because that's a hard place to play generally.
That's the thing.
So Iowa's got a better defense than Illinois.
We know that.
What will the Jeremiah Smith situation look like?
because Ohio State very clearly, like Ryan Day and Arthur Smith,
decided we are going to press the Jeremiah Smith button as often as possible
because we may need it.
You had a defense that had some coverage bus.
You weren't really getting as much from your other playmakers.
So you went to the best player in the country over and over and over again.
Is Iowa good enough to take him away for?
Is he so good that even this defense can't limit him if,
he's the only one that you're scared of.
I don't think it's one or the other.
I think if you hold him for seven receptions to 120 yards in a touchdown,
you've taken him away.
What you can't happen is what happened.
It's what can't happen is what happened today,
which is, you know, 12 reception or whatever,
215 yards and four touchdowns.
So, like, I mean, that's on the table.
I don't think that's going to happen.
But I'm very curious how it's going to look.
But I do think that this is super fascinating.
And I'm very excited to see how Iowa, you know, moves forward.
I know their fans have been through a lot, man.
It wasn't that long ago that you had a had what was it the drive to 325 or whatever their point total drive to 325 to the Brian Ferrence era. Oh my.
Yeah.
I mean, it wasn't that long ago.
So I think Brian Ferrence probably, well, I don't know if he was watching that last drive, but he probably couldn't even conceive of something like that.
Well, he called the.
Yards at a minute 46.
What?
Yeah.
So it'll be very interesting.
But, you know, congratulations to Iowa.
I'm sorry, Michigan.
I know that sucks.
But sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield.
Well, look, you were supposed to have a loss and now you have a loss.
That's kind of where it is now.
So we will, Iowa fans tomorrow, we will have a video previewing Iowa, Ohio State,
because that is going to be the game of the week next week.
Get ready.
Buckeyes are coming to Iowa City.
This is going to be a fun week, Ari.
We will talk to you very soon.
Actually, right after the Portland Ole Miss game set.
