Welcome to an instant reaction edition of Andy and Orion 3 presented by Polymarket
where we're just going to hit the Jeremiah Smith button again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
We had a discussion about this this week, Ari, that if they did this, maybe they couldn't win.
They won by 17 and they hit the Jeremiah Smith button over and over in spite of him being double covered sometimes, triple covered sometimes.
It didn't matter.
he's that good.
106 yards, two touchdowns
and it could have actually been even more.
There were a few drops, a few PIs, I think they got
away with in the second half.
Yeah, I guess the question will continue
to be, why is
Ohio State only throwing to
Jeremiah Smith and is that a good
enough way to win things?
And like so far, I would say
pretty good because
you know, they also could have
beaten and probably should have beaten Texas doing
this. So I don't know
like if they're playing a Bama or a Georgia or somebody that, you know,
whoever emerges from the SEC in January,
if somebody figures out a way to blake at him and do it.
But the other thing that is kind of lost track of because we've seen Texas
and other teams bracket him and do their best to take him out of the game
and they've been somewhat successful.
Andy, I know that, you know, we know he's good, but like, he's getting better.
Like, I don't know if people have noticed that.
He's leveling up last year.
Yeah.
Well, and we talked earlier today back.
Keel and Russell to Alabama and how great he looked.
But you have to be otherworldly spectacular to win the Heism
Trophy as a wide receiver.
Devante Smith was otherworldly spectacular in 2020.
Jeremiah Smith is that so far.
And like this game today, the play where the Iowa, the Iowa player held him
and then they double covered him.
And then he caught it anyway along the sideline was insane.
They had a great camera angle, CBS did, of him getting held and the official throwing the flag as he was running to catch the ball in double coverage.
Like, it's beautiful to watch him work.
And it's amazing when you see what he can do.
And you mentioned that you think Iowa got away with some PIs and I think you're right.
It's almost like when Shaq was young and he was so much bigger and stronger than everybody else.
Like, he didn't get the same foul calls.
What was a foul for anybody else was not a foul on shack.
Same thing here.
What's PI to another receiver is not PI when you're doing to Jeremiah Smith because I think
unconsciously the refs are probably like, well, I mean, it's just unfair.
We have to even the scale somehow.
Yeah, he's not playing the same game.
And, you know, I don't know if I've told you this, Andy, but you knew that I was pretty
obsessed with him from the beginning, right?
Like you, I was like on this podcast, my, his freshman year or two years ago,
saying he's the best player in college football or best receiver in college football like
four games into his career. So I have this running bit now in like a group chat of mine about,
you know, because I said my expectations for him as being one of the greatest receivers of all
time when this is all said and done, not just in college, but in the NFL. Like I feel like,
and I don't know if I'm overstating this and I need you to pull me back from the railing if I am.
I feel like we are watching something that like we've never seen before. Like I know that
we've seen Devante Smith and I know there's been a lot of really good
players. But I just, it's so magnificent. Like, I don't know how to properly contextualize this.
Well, do you, do you know why we didn't see this before? You know, you suspected this was possible.
We are, and I think I've said, you know, Jeremiah Smith will be in the NFL next year and probably
the best receiver in the NFL by two or three years from now. I've said that a few times.
But I don't think we realized what his ceiling was until he didn't have Carnell Tate around.
him or he didn't have Colonel Tate and a mecca book around him because those guys were awesome too.
Those guys were still better than almost everybody else.
Now that he is so much better and the other guys aren't really getting open, we're seeing exactly what he can do at full power.
Yeah.
It's just, it's remarkable.
So I don't know what is going to happen this year.
I will be very curious.
And the good thing about Ohio State schedule is, is that unlike some other schedules,
there's plenty of opportunity for them to be tested.
They've got Indiana,
USC, Oregon back to back to back,
and of course they're playing Michigan.
I don't know how much of a challenge that's going to be this year.
But you never know in that game, right?
I didn't know it was going to be a challenge two years ago and they lost.
So, you know, I think that, you know,
we'll get to see exactly how far the Jeremiah Smith offense goes.
If you're an Ohio State fan who's concerned about this team for certain reasons,
I think there are reasons to be concerned about the team.
You know, I don't know that I love what I see from their,
lines for most of the game.
I don't know if I love the defensive
backfield at times. You know, there are people
open. Like, that's the thing about this.
Like, Iowa loves
to play this style of game where they bring
you down into the sluggish Iowa City
best and they're pretty
good at it. I mean, they actually did it
to Ohio State for a few quarters.
But there were opportunity for Iowa
to hit some big plays offensively that they
didn't, they just weren't good enough to connect
on. Yeah. That will be there.
Higgins not great at hitting open receivers.
Like, that's, just say it like it is.
Like, there were guys getting open.
He wasn't hitting him.
And it wasn't always because of pressure.
But Jeremiah Smith had to do what he did today.
Had to.
Because Iowa was playing that game.
And it was, what was it 13, 136?
And you're thinking, okay, where's the Iowa punt return for a touchdown?
Where's the interception?
Where's the fumble?
but it was always Jeremiah.
And he kept him going.
And so, yeah, I think it will be fascinating to see Ohio State
when they hit that stretch of the schedule of Indiana and Oregon
and USC also, because USC has really good athletes,
that can they keep doing this?
I don't think anybody, and again, we've talked about this.
We go back to the Miami game last year.
They did not take Jeremiah Smith away.
They took everybody else away.
Jeremiah Smith had something like seven catches for 140 yards in that game,
but they took everybody else away.
And I think that's what you fear if you're Ohio State.
But right now, if you can just keep doing this,
I still think, and we said this this week,
like somebody else is going to develop because they've got young guys.
Somebody else is going to take that role on.
Yeah.
Andy, is he, you know, we vote every one.
week in the fake straw pole highspin thing that we do.
Yeah, yeah.
Is he your number one?
Has he been your number one?
Like where are you at with Heism?
He's been my number one, but it's him and Keelan Russell that I've got to decide between
tomorrow.
Yeah.
And I think that, you know, we're only halfway through the season.
I think that that's a low stakes, you know, you choose with what your gut tells you
at the moment.
But, you know, for being a receiver and how difficult it is to, you know, actually win the
award at that position. I think he's doing just about everything that a person at that position
can to put himself in a position to win. Because I do, I think it's really funny. You know, we are in
year three and he does have a national championship ring, but he hasn't won the Bolitnikov yet, and he has
not won the Heisman yet. And if he doesn't win either of those awards, because Malachi Tony's very good,
and there's a lot of season left, it would be pretty unbelievable that somebody that is that good
could make through the entire college career without winning either of those things. Because
it's yeah it's like it's almost you know how herschel got kind of the career achievement
he's probably should have wanted his freshman year but they just wouldn't get the freshman back then
and so the his last year in college he he got the heisman and he may not have had the best
numbers but it was it was the career achievement one i don't know that they do that with the
heisman i think they would do that with a bulletinicoff for for jeremiah at this point like
okay i'm gonna i'll i'll throw this at you because you threw this at with keel and russell earlier today
would you take any receiver in the country over Jeremiah Smith?
No.
Okay.
Tony's awesome.
I'm taking Jeremiah Smith 10 times out of 10.
How about we even go further with it?
If you were building a college football team right now and you could pick Keelan Russell or
Jeremiah Smith, who would you pick?
Jeremiah Smith.
See, I'm surprised.
Because I feel like if I get an adequate or above average quarterback with Jeremiah
Smith, he makes him amazing.
Yeah.
But yeah, he's a, he's a great player, and I think that Ohio State's doing the right thing.
Like, I know if there's like two schools of thought of.
Mike in the chat, JJ's being schemed up.
Do you all not know what you're all watching?
Mike, we started the video saying, he was triple teamed and then scored a touchdown anyway.
He was double teamed and then caught an amazing pass along the sideline.
I don't even know what you're referring to.
Do you not know what you're watching?
Mike, do you not know what you're watching?
Pay attention.
What, but what would I have said or you said that would even create that comment?
We've been talking about how awesome he is for nine full minutes.
Mike doesn't know what he's watching, apparently.
Yeah.
But, you know, the thing that was also funny because I do want to talk a little bit about Iowa is that,
well, I don't think that they're equipped to compete in these games.
And that's always going to be the pitfall.
Like you can say, hey, you got Iowa, or, you know, what they did Michigan last week, you know, doing the punt game.
Like Iowa actually did execute what they wanted to do on their home field for much of the first half.
You know, they pinned Ohio State deep.
They caused missed field goals, you know, if they wouldn't have turned it over, you know, on their first possession,
which is very anti the Iowa plan and give Ohio State a free score, they had a chance to actually be, you know, within a touchdown at halftime.
And that was the type was a lower scoring game.
But the thing that is difficult is if you are an Iowa fan and you want them to make the playoff and you want them to win games in January,
you might have to like acknowledge the fact that this plan while been effective, you can't argue against like what Kirk Ferrence has achieved in his career.
I don't know that it is effective way to get over the hump in college football in 2026.
It's not, but they don't have the, they don't have the players for it.
They'll they'd have to get the players to do it.
Now, one thing I won't point out about Ohio State because it's not all Jeremiah Smith,
they ran the ball pretty well against Iowa.
When you average almost four yards of carry against Iowa, you are doing, you were doing well.
Like that's okay.
Like it's not a great number against most people.
It's a great number against Iowa.
And I think that that allowed them to really control this game.
I thought that was pretty excellent.
So, yeah, I don't want to say that they are completely limited.
to Jeremiah Smith.
They're not.
I thought
Jacobi Jackson looked good.
I thought they got Bo Jackson going a little bit later.
And they did move the ball in the ground enough against Iowa.
Because it's going to be easier.
Even the teams that are coming that are good,
they're not necessarily as good defensively as Iowa is.
Ohio State had 484 yards of total offense
and Jeremiah Smith had 206 of them.
I know.
It's a big share.
We had the emailer on Thursday who said typically guys who are this much of the offense when you have that, it's hard to win championships.
But I don't know.
He may just be an alien.
He may be different than everybody else.
The rules may not apply.
You can triple cover him.
He still scores a touchdown.
So it's pretty amazing.
But if you're an Ohio state person, you go down with Jeremiah.
Yes.
Just go down with them.
If you lose a game because he has too many targets,
then you lose a game because he has too many targets.
Just you feed the guy.
He's a generational player,
even for an Ohio State program that's had so many great players come through there.
You know, use him.
He's getting paid a lot.
You know, work.
Yeah.
Now, it's going to be fun to watch him against Indiana and against Oregon.
Like, I can't wait.
I cannot wait to see what they,
one, what they do to try to stop him?
Like, what does Brian Haynes cook up to try to stop him?
Because they played a really,
low-scoring game and beat Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game last year.
So what does he cook up to try to stop when Jeremiah's high school teammate,
DeAngelo Pons, is not on the team anymore?
It's going to be fun.
But, all right, we got to talk about Missouri-wamping Florida.
We're going to do that in our next video.
We'll be live doing that, too.
So if you want to come into the chat for that one,
it'll be hitting your push notifications in a couple of minutes.
Talk to that.
