Welcome to an emergency instant reaction edition of Andy Nari on 3 presented by Polly Market. In a game that was so epic, it had to be broadcast across three different television networks. Okay, that was because of weather delay and tennis. And I apologize to the people who were watching the pro-disc golf tour on ESPN News. You had to settle for the most shocking upset so far of the 2006 season. State beats Oregon 39, 31. Dan Lanning's first loss as Oregon's coach against an unranked team. It snapped Oregon streak of 12 consecutive road wins. It snapped Oklahoma State's 12-game losing streak. No team in college football history had ever snapped a 12-game

losing streak against the top 10 team until now. Oklahoma State. What a win for a team that got destroyed by Tulsa in Eric Morris's opener as the Cowboys coach. Meanwhile, Oregon played a very tough game against Boise State last week. The Oregon fans got very mad at me because I left the ducks out of my projected playoff because I said, the way Boise State moved the ball, caused me some concern. I believe those Oregon fans are all just as concerned now because this was an utter demolition in terms of Oklahoma State moving the ball on Oregon's defense. Oregon's defense had a couple really nice havoc plays.

They had a pick six early and then another interception that put them on the one and set up another touchdown. They really kept him in the game. But for the most part, Oklahoma State was moving the ball back and forth up and down the field, pretty much at will, which is amazing because they couldn't do it last week against Tulsa. I do not understand how these things happen, but that is college football. That is large groups of 18 to 22 year olds being rather inconsistent in their performance. And I'm just, I'm amazed at how this game went.

down because the Oklahoma State team we saw against Tulsa could barely move on. And maybe they were saving stuff. Maybe they thought, okay, we're not going to do much against Tulsa because we can beat Tulsa. We're better than Tulsa. We don't need to do much. We'll save it all for Oregon. Well, if that's what happened, it worked. You ended up having a loss, but it worked.

Joseph says, my ducks are cheeks. Why are you pitching a run? throw the ball. Hey, Ari's here. We didn't know if Arir's going to be able to make it. He was trying to get the press box at Texas. Hi. What's going on, Ari?

Oh, he can't hear us. He's on mute. We'll figure Ari out. But this has been quite an interesting week. And so as this is going on, by the way, and I think this is something the Oregon fans are pointing out in the chat,

Raymond says, Bamma better watch out. Well, Will Stein in Kentucky are playing Alabama. right now, it's halftime of that game, and that game is very tightly contested. So that is probably going to be the number one topic of conversation in Oregon circles this week, is Dan Lannning loses his coordinators, Tosh Lpoys, now the head coach at Cal, the defense coordinator, Will Stein, the offensive coordinator, now the head coach at Kentucky. And Dan Lannin promoted from within.

He promoted Drew Marringer. He promoted Chris Hampton. Now, the Chris Hampton thing, Hampton was basically calling the defense when Tosh was there. So I don't know how different that is, but it does feel like they're a little different schematically because it's certainly not a case of them having bad players. You know, if you look at all the pre-draft stuff, like the NFL people love Oregon's talent on defense. But Boise State moved the ball really well. and Oklahoma State move the ball really well. Presumably, the other really good teams on Oregon's schedule,

and there are a bunch of those, are going to move the ball really well. They play USC in week four. USC's going to move the ball really well, and if it doesn't get much better defensively, Oregon's going to be in trouble. Oregon can be in trouble against UCLA, based on what we've seen so far.

Ohio State, obviously. Ari, you're here. Texas Press Box. What's going on? Can you hear me okay? Can you hear me okay? There you are. All right.

We got you now. No, we don't. All right. We're going to let Ari go. We'll talk to Ari later. But the coordinator things, I was joking. Again, I'm joking. Like Dan Landing, I'm not going to kill Dan Landing over this because he's won a lot of games.

Like, his previous five losses. the last three were to teams that won the national title that season, two to Indiana last year, one to Ohio State and the Rose Bowl. And then the two before that were both to Washington in a year that Washington played for the national title. So I'm not going to kill him. But the questions will be asked about the coordinators.

I joked that it was big dabbo energy, because that is what happened with Clemson, where there was a lot of promoting from within, and it didn't happen. to work out. So again, I don't know if that's it right now. We know Oregon's talented.

If we're going to pop the hood on what happened today, if we're going to perform the autopsy, there's some drops in the first half. There's a huge decorin more drop in the first half, but a couple of drops in the first half that made the difference in this game. That said, it doesn't excuse the defense giving up as many yards as it gave up.

I mean, again, Oklahoma State moved the ball. Pretty much it will. You look at when they had to run the clock out. Mestemaker was running the ball better than he ever did at North Texas. He had a run in the first half that about equaled his rushing total from last year. 554 total yards for Oregon State, 317 passing, 237 rushing. They average 6.7 yards of play. that's just, it's not going to get it done if you're Oregon.

And I mean, this was a weird game. You have, hold on, Bryson, I got to, we're going to get Bryce in the chat. If this was Sark in Texas, you would kill him. What is Lanting accomplished that gives him this cushion? Bryson, I say the same things about Sark. Both of them get you close. They get you knocking on the door. Now, losses like this are what you worry about.

So I killed Sark, not too much over the Florida loss. But this is like that Florida loss for Texas last year. This is just like that. Jordan Dan Lining is just a recruiter going back to his 21 Georgia defense. He's the Ryan Day of James Franklin's. Ryan Day has a national champion. So if he's your Ryan Day, you're going to do fine. Ryan Day also someone who took a lot of criticism and lost some games he shouldn't

before he finally won the one he should. So, Dan Landing is going to take a lot of heat this week. He's going to get a lot of questions. He will be questioned about whether it was a good idea to just promote from within. Because Oregon offensive coordinator, specifically, that job, Kenny Dillingham now doing really well at Arizona State. They didn't win today, but he's had a successful tenure at Arizona State. Will Stein, we think is going to be a good coach at Kentucky. So that was a job when when it opened, probably you would have had your pick of all the best rising star coordinators in America.

So it is a legitimate question as to why that happened. So I don't know. I am a little shocked. Now, again, I left Oregon out of that projected playoff last week thinking I was going to put them right back in because I thought they were going to, especially, after the way Oklahoma State played, that Oregon was just going to hop in there, crush Oklahoma State, and get right back to business. But that defense does give me pause. As for Oklahoma State now, we crushed Eric Morris last week. And again, I don't know how much they were holding back thinking, oh, we'll just out talent Tulsa and then we'll go beat Ford. Maybe that's what the plan was.

And Tulsa was better than they thought. But Oklahoma State, if you can beat Oregon, guess what? You can beat everybody else on your schedule. Texas Tech is the toughest team remaining on the schedule, obviously. Texas Tech is the favorite in the Big 12. If you can beat Oregon, you can beat Texas Tech. Last we checked, Oregon shut out Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl last year. I realized the teams are different now.

But that was a very good Texas Tech team that a very similar team to this Oregon team shut out. That should excite you in Stillwater. And the thing is like me and Ari, pretty much everybody else, we were all really high on Eric Morris, really high on Oklahoma State, the idea of porting that offense, a lot of those North Texas guys. And the defense too. My Schuyler Cassidy is proven to be a pretty good defensive coordinator since he was hired away from Sam Houston State by Eric Morris at North Texas. So they bring all these guys who know the scheme, know what they're doing. And that's what was so confusing about last week is you have so many guys you know what you do. This shouldn't be that hard to gel together as a team.

And I got to tell you, today it looked like they've been playing together forever. There were a couple of mistakes, but again, the pick six, the other interception that set up an organ touchdown, Those are to be expected against the defense and specifically defensive line as athletic as Oregon's. I mean, they were causing havoc. The thing that Messamaker did really well is most of the time he was able to get loose, escape in the pocket, keep his eyes downfield, and find somebody open. And then Oregon, excuse me, Oklahoma State's receivers did an excellent job of when coverage broke down, go find some open grass, which again,

This is an air raid offense. Eric Morris comes from the Mike Leach tree. That's an offense built around receivers finding open grass. But they did it really well today, really well. And especially when Drew Mestimaker dealing with absolute monsters up front on the Oregon defensive line, he doesn't, even when he gets away, he doesn't have that much time. But they were finding open spaces. He was finding them.

And then Drew Mestimaker just running. really well. He had the long run to start the game. He had the touchdown in the fourth quarter where he dives over the goal line to put them ahead. This has been just a crazy day. And Ari said it all week, and I feel stupid because I know, I knew in my heart he was right. And it wasn't like we predicted this exact result. But he said every time we talked about Michigan and by Sondervo. But every time we talked about Oklahoma State losing to Tulsa, he said, we tend to overreact to week one. And boy, did we ever overreacted week one. Because week two, there are teams that have looked completely different. Oklahoma State was a completely different team in week two than it was in week one.

The problem for Oregon was that it wasn't a different team than it was in week one. It was the same team. So now Oregon's got to figure out. how to be a different team. They've got to figure out how to be a team that does not allow long sustained drives. They got Portland State on Friday. They better figure it out

because they're going to the Coliseum, September 26th. USC is going to be coming off an open date. It's probably the biggest game of Lincoln Riley's tenure. And I'm very curious about how that's going to work. I doubt Pollymarkets going to set a spread on that game quite yet. because they don't always go that far out.

But I'd be very curious to know what that's going to be. I think after this, you're going to see USC favored in that game, which if you had told me that before the season started, I would have said you're nuts. There's no way Oregon comes in there as an underdog. I think there's a chance Oregon will come in there as an underdog. But again, I don't want to draw too many conclusions because I thought after Oklahoma State lost to Tulsa,

they were just going to be average this year. Now? They might be able to win the Big 12. If you can beat Oregon, you can win the Big 12. And if you're Oregon, if you can lose in Stillwater, well, you can lose to USC, you can lose to Ohio State, you can lose to Washington, you can lose to Michigan, they're going to have to get better.

They cannot let this turn into something that drives them down. Because, again, Oregon has been at the door. They've been knocking and knocking and knocking and knocking. you lose games like this, you stop knocking. Thank you for watching. Talk to you after these afternoon games.
