Welcome to another instant reaction edition of Andy and Ari on three presented by BetMGM.
Ari, we just watched Ole Miss beat LSU.
And remember when I was at Ole Miss's loss to Florida last year in Gainesville and we're like,
this was supposed to be the year.
This was supposed to be the team.
Ari, what if this was supposed to be the team for Ole Miss?
I don't know that it was supposed to.
It just might happen to be that way.
Like last year was supposed to.
That's never going to change with all the play.
Right, but nobody expected this team to do this.
I mean, maybe the people in Oxford did, but nobody was predicting Ole Miss in the
playoff.
And I mean, they got a long way to go, but if you look at it compared to the rest of the SEC
in terms of remaining schedule and everything else, they're in a pretty good spot.
Yeah, there's no question about it.
And, you know, the thing that I liked the most about what I saw there, Andy, is that
Ole Miss, at least to me, felt like they were in control that entire game.
and I don't know if this is like an overreaction to what might be a systemic
offensive issue for LSU or if Olimus has just got the goods, right?
Because like we came in.
Well, okay.
Offensive issue for LSU, yes, but let's not forget,
LSU's defense wasn't good today either.
Yeah.
I mean, here's a true cold, hard fact.
We came into the season believing that Garrett Nussmeyer was one of the best
quarterbacks in college football.
and I don't think that you could say with a straight face
that he outperformed Trinidad Chambliss on that field today.
Now, I'm not saying, I'm not here to say that Trinidad Chamblis is a better
quarterback than him, but when you're playing in these...
He was better today.
One possession games on the road in the SEC,
the one thing that LSU unequivocally cannot have happened is to have their
quarterback outplayed.
You know, they've got a pretty good defense.
I think that if you go on the road and you give up 24 points,
you probably make that deal going into it, right?
because, I mean, I don't know, maybe this tells you team.
All right, Ole Miss dominated this game, and it was close because
Ole Miss kept committing penalties.
Yeah.
Dominate.
Yeah.
Maybe LSU still goes, hey, we'll give you 24.
If we know that's what you're scoring, we can outscore 24, or is that too much to ask for
their offense this year?
Like, that's the problem.
So, you know, we spent a lot of time talking about LSU after the Clemson game.
the highs of that. But I think it's become unequivocally clear that their offense is not very good this year.
And I think that we, you know, nailed it when we said that Brian Kelly got upset in the postgame news conference after the floor to win because it addressed an issue that he saw bearer right in front of his face.
You don't need to watch film. Everybody watched that game and they could not move the football offensively.
And this is a problem that has continued on since then and ultimately cost them a loss on the road.
Now, you know, this is week five, and it's the SEC and teams like Ole Miss are probably going to lose and teams like, you know, Oklahoma are probably going to lose and, you know, one game doesn't tank your season by any stretch of the imagination.
But if I'm an LSU fan right now, I'm not as, you know, I'm upset about the law, sure, but like I'm concerned about the longevity or the ceiling of my actual team this year moving forward because I don't know if they can score on teams.
And I think the LSU fans have been on this for a while.
Yeah. I had a friend who's an LSU fan text me in the third quarter saying if Nuss can't get into the end zone here, he needs to sit, which I thought was a little extreme.
But we talked about it all off season. Like they have to show a running game that developed a running game.
The only time we saw them run the ball effectively was that last touchdown drive.
And then they call a run. They get stuffed on the two-point conversion that basically made winning almost impossible.
Yeah.
So there are so many teams in the SEC that have really,
really good defenses and suspect offenses.
And I think that LSU falls into that category.
Ole Miss, you may be, I don't know, listen,
I don't know what to make of Texas yet.
So I have a hard time with this.
Right.
But LSU might be the most balanced team, right?
I mean, if you can't run the ball, you're not balanced.
No, balanced offense and defense in terms of, like, what can win you a football game?
No.
Who's more balanced than them?
Than LSU?
No, I'm talking about Ole Miss.
You said LSU.
Sorry, Ole Miss.
Yes, Ole Miss is very balanced, especially the defense we've seen the last couple of weeks.
The defense we saw against Arkansas, I was a little worried, but it's gotten better.
Yeah, sorry for that purpose speaking there.
There's no team that's more unbalanced than LSU.
That makes perfect sense.
And, you know, I'd say Texas A&M is pretty good on both sides of the ball.
The Aggies had more than, I mean, I think roughly 500 yards of offense today and, like,
we're on defense in the last two minutes by saying.
Trying to win the game.
Yeah.
Like, I could have convinced myself at the end of last week that Texas A&M has one of the best offenses in the country.
I think Auburn has a really good defense.
They do.
They all want Hugh Fries fired right now.
Like they do have a really good defense.
They do have a good defense.
You know, LSU has a very good defense.
I think Texas has a very good defense.
Oklahoma has a very good defense.
I don't know, maybe.
Oklahoma has a great defense.
Pretty good defense and a really fun offense.
I still think the jury's out on Missouri a little bit.
We're going to find out a lot about Georgia and Bama, which is happening right now.
But like, here's the thing, too.
I mean, Tennessee, Mississippi State is coming down.
under the wire like in mississippi state wins this we have to re-evaluate how we talk about them too
yeah undefeated sorry river um the and won yet don't don't get caught one yet um
omis coming into last year was a team that was always very good and never won big games
the biggest of big games i think last year beating the crap out of georgia the game that we
went to changed that perspective a little bit and then they ended up not making the playoff because
they lost games that you would have typically won.
This year, I think that you could make the case, and I don't know, you've got a more
photographic memory to recall things offhand, but would this be one of the three or four
biggest Lane Kiffin wins of his time at LSU so far?
I mean, at Ole Miss so far?
Yes.
Oh, definitely.
Because this is the kind of game that they would find a way to lose, it feels like, before.
And, you know, look, I don't think they have to go to Athens and win.
I think that's one they can drop and still want.
up in the playoff yeah we're going to have to win a tough game on the road somewhere
because they play oklahoma on the road mississippi state on the road is going to be a hard
game like both well it's just showing out man heck yeah um yeah i mean 10 and two in the SEC
probably get you in so i don't know where the other but like old miss has a pretty manageable
schedule if they are what they i'm very curious what happens at the quarterback position in a
month. Yeah, I mean, what is Florida going to be when they get to Oxford? I don't know.
In mid-November. I mean, so. I mean, South Carolina, off to a rough start. That's a tough game. I mean, they've got games that they could conceivably lose. We're talking about a team of Kentucky last year. There's nobody in the SEC that can look at their schedule and say, we're going to win out against this.
Yeah, but winning this game at home
And I think that the emphasis of winning at home
Is just so much higher now
With the parody, like you have to win these flip games
I mean, this is a one and a half point spread
We talk a lot about winning your coin flick games
If you have a coin flip game at home
You need to win it in the SEC
If you have any designs of playing in Atlanta
Are going further than that
And I think that's what Ole Miss did.
Now, you know, LSU has a pretty rough schedule ahead
And they have a chance to get off the Schneide
Like their season's not over by any stretch of the imagination
You know, you have A&M and Alabama
back to back at the end of October
and early November.
Harvey, you're just glossing
over Vanderbilt right there.
They've got to go to Vanderbilt.
I'm looking at games that, I mean, I don't know.
I don't want to.
You're looking at games they might lose.
I'm telling you they might lose at Vanderbilt.
They might be able to win people back over.
But that Vanderbilt game also might serve.
I don't want to misspeak about a team by overlooking them in September.
Vanderbilt's a pretty tough team.
I mean, Vanderbilt plays Alabama next week.
We'll have a better.
We'll get a pretty good.
Anderbilt didn't have their best game today, but they ended up winning.
So, you know, they didn't have their best half.
They ended up scoring over 50 points and winning by a lot.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, we'll see about that Alabama game.
But yeah, I think if you're an Ole Miss fan, like you might, this might feel.
And like, I honestly understand, too, like why they're so testy about hearing about like
Lane Kiffin going to Florida because it feels like these last two years, even though they failed last year,
might be like the line in the sand of like a turning point for the program, you know, like that.
And that's the thing.
Sometimes it's not the year it's supposed to be.
So, well, as producer river watches his vols try to pull one out in Starkville,
I'm going to talk about the year of his birth.
So his birthday is coming up.
He was born, I believe, three days after Tennessee beat Florida in 1998.
That Tennessee team was not supposed to be the team.
The team for Tennessee was supposed to be either.
97, Payton's last year, or 99 when all their really, really good players from one particular class came of age.
It just turned out 98 was the year.
98 was the perfect year.
Al Wilson was the perfect captain.
Like, sometimes it just happens for you.
Trinidad Shambliss, who knows?
Like, unless you really followed D2 football last year, did you know who Trinidad Shamblis was?
How many people who like college football, who really studied college football, knew who Trinidad Shamblis was?
Yeah.
And it's such a good point, too.
I mean, I even think back to my time on the Ohio State beat, all the teams that won the national title or competed at the highest level were not the teams.
The 14th, the one, it was not the team.
The 15 team that was the team didn't.
You know, like, that was the way it always went.
So, you know, I get a little bit nervous with, you know, getting two over my skis on teams in September.
I get really excited.
I think Ole Miss should feel just as good tonight as I did about the team after they beat Georgia last year, believe it or not.
Because when you win this game, you do it like with a clean slate.
You do it undefeated.
Like the world is your oyster.
Like feel really good about this.
And like look at your schedule and be like, hey, you know, we're in a position to make the playoff.
And if we don't, it will be because of us.
Yeah.
This is going to be a great stretch run in the SEC.
because they're going to be some bombshell results.
And now LSU, producer River, can you please put LSU schedule back up there?
Ari, what if they go eight and four?
Because that's realistic here.
Yeah, with an offense like that, that is realistic.
I mean, I think I'm going to drop them out of the top 10.
I don't know that you can be in the top 10 with an offense.
I can't move the football.
I didn't see that coming this year, but that's where we're at.
Yeah, because they go home to play South Carolina.
Like, South Carolina's offense is not the greatest in the world,
and they're going to really struggle to block LSU.
But.
Good defense.
South Carolina may be able to stuff LSU's offense.
Yeah, are you telling me that if South Carolina scores 21 points,
yeah, that your team's, like, I don't feel good about them winning the game
if the other team scores 24 points.
So me and Lynn Kiffin are saying take the under on that one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, also, Lane Kiffin beat his daughter's boyfriend.
That's got to be satisfying.
And I actually want to take a minute, and this is probably a topic for tonight,
but his daughter did a very good job of wearing the Ole Miss garb while honoring her boyfriend.
Did you see the garb?
I don't know.
We'll have a picture hopefully later.
Did she have like a 40 pin or something like that?
It was a blue Ole Miss dress and then a patch that said number 40 that was ironed on at the bottom of the skirt.
very good like a very tasteful way of because we we had this debate like how well you if you were
a sorority member at old miss like you can't wear the split jersey that's just it's not it's not
stylish enough somebody in somalia just tried to log into my Facebook so I should probably
I don't know about all right let's I want to watch some of these games let's go to the next one
what are we talking about next all right well we talked a little bit about Texas A&M and Auburn
Texas A&M great start you talked to
Mike Elko this week.
There's a thing supernatural going on.
Not your, I was shitting my pants.
Auburn covered.
Jackson Arnold did not take a safety to blow the cover this time.
Yeah.
Just so you know, I would have taken personal responsibility had A&M like turned around and lost
the game where they outgained their opponent by 300 yards and lost at home.
Like that would have been my fault.
When Auburn scored, when Auburn intercepted the pass and then scored one play later,
I was like, they are going to get dominant.
and somehow find a way to win this game but a and m's defense came up big yeah so we've talked
about that we we can't talk about tennessee mississippi state because that's still going on
the let's talk indiana and iowa i hate indiana just so you know i know i know okay
really bad beat in that situation are you matter at signetti or the refs who kept saying
for rano mendoza was down when he wasn't getting touched because the game was
would have been over and they wouldn't have to take the safety.
Here's what I do know, because I had Indiana in real life minus six and a half.
Like this isn't like a fun and joke.
Like I'm upset is the clock ran out when he was at the 15 yard line.
And if I were the head coach of a team, we couldn't see the clock.
It was three seconds left when he snapped the ball.
I think there was a pretty good body clock.
He's told to take the safety.
You can't lose if you take the safety.
But here's the thing, I don't know why I would do that.
If I'm up seven, in the only conceivable way I could lose the football game in that moment is by putting the ball in my own end zone.
Like, I don't like the call to begin with.
Like, I'm upset because it affected me personally.
But, like, it was just an, I didn't like the call, period.
What do you think he didn't like the call?
It's the surest way to win.
We run out of the back of the end zone.
I mean, like, you know, you're running, putting the ball in the end zone.
Like, if he drops it or like the freak things that could happen.
As soon as he crosses the goal line with the ball and goes down or goes over the sideline, which he went over the pilot.
My TV, so I have no idea what you're talking about.
You're just mad because sound football strategy messed with your finances.
Yeah, it mess with a lot of people's finances.
And I also think, too, and this is like a not a real take, but kind of a real take.
Like, I think that it's the coach's responsibility to know that all your fans are betting on your team when they're in your stadium and not to screw everybody like that.
but you know this is this is what they say why people should not gamble and then talk about
football because their judgment is clouded but one more game and then we'll watch these
night games and we'll come back at 1130 Eastern time to break it all down one more Ohio State
Washington Ohio State smushed them boa constricted them Washington actually made it very
competitive in the first half but Ohio State just much deeper receiver stayed really
conservative producer rivers going insane so i'm assuming tennessee did something good i think yeah
touchdown tennessee uh we're going to have a tie game with a minute 55 to go yeah are they pushing
back the hard times of the penn state in georgia games or they the georgia team is taking the field
right now okay they don't they don't have to push back the start time because that game is on ebc
and tennessee's on the cc network okay so that's not going to be affected by that but at least it's not
started yet we haven't missed that game yet um ohio states do we see
You want to stay live and just ooh and awe, whatever happens here?
Oh, they're going to do a review.
This could take forever.
Yeah, I mean, we'll have a full breakdown tonight.
That's okay.
Yeah.
But I think we'll break down tonight.
This game real quick, though.
Yeah.
Ohio State's defense is really nasty.
And I think Julian's hand is really good.
You might be upset because Ohio State came out with a conservative game plan offensively.
Their offense will figure it out.
They'll be fine.
I think you're going to see that a lot, though.
I think they're really confident in this defense, and they're going to be conservative in most games until they feel like they need to let it rip.
Because, and honestly, like, how good does your offense have to be for them to feel like they got to let it rip?
Yeah.
Once they started throwing it a little bit, it wasn't really much of a game.
Washington played their ass off.
I think that, like, Washington should be in the AP top 25.
I don't know if you'll ever see a team jump into the rankings after losing, but they're a pretty good football team.
I think they'll, but they'll work their way in.
Like what they showed us today tells us.
will work their way in. That's a good team. But Ohio State's just physically superior.
And again, I do think they're going to come with a conservative game plan nearly every week
until you prove they need to get a little loose with it. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah,
that's the number one team in the country from my point of view. But we'll see if Georgia
wins tonight, maybe they'd pop up to number one too. So we got some, that was a really low,
Honestly, Andy,
like we kind of like sped through this little bit.
Like those games that we were talking about right now
could have been a whole show.
Yes.
And we're going to have to focus on them again later.
And we have two Leviathans right now.
So let's go watch Bama, Georgia.
Let's go watch Oregon Penn State.
And let's all get back together here at 1130 Eastern
as a whole family.
As a family.
We'll see you then.
Thank you.
