on tonight's instant reaction edition of Andy and Ari on three presented by
Madeleau and BetMGM what a game that's all I can say Ole Miss beats Georgia I am still waiting
on a final score because they are reviewing the final play to tell us whether it was a safety
or not but Ole Miss in a back and forth crazy game beats Georgia the team with no coach
Well, they have a coach. Pete Golding's the coach now.
But Lane Kiffin left, and Ole Miss is going to the semifinals.
They're going to the festival to play Miami for a shot at the national title game.
We'll talk about it all on tonight's edition of Andy and Arion 3, presented by Madelo and Bad MGM.
Welcome to an Instagram reactionition of Andy and Ariol 3, presented by Maddello and
at MGM. And we do have a final score from New Orleans, Ari. It is 39, 34. They have upheld the safety
call. All Miss did it. It's everything you wanted. It's the Disney movie. Their coach left.
Pete Golding, the Gordon Bombay of college football coaching is going to take them to the playoff
semifinals. Quack, quack, quack, Mr. Duxworth, when you wish upon a star.
Is that what they
Is that what it does?
Yes, the Walt Disney Pictures logo
with the fairy dust that goes across.
Yeah.
Yeah, you sent me a cool picture of somebody
doing something with the Disney Dust.
Disney Dust would be a great name for a drug,
and I would snort the hell out of that right now.
That was insane.
That game was everything you wanted
because it wasn't like either team played poorly.
both teams made massive mistakes.
Both teams made incredible plays.
I mean, you think about this,
at the end of the first half,
when Ole Miss blew the clock situation,
you thought,
Pete Golding's in over his head.
He's not going to make this.
And then Kirby Smart goes for it on fourth and nine
late in the game,
and it doesn't seem like half the team knows
they're actually snapping the ball.
And Ole Miss gets the ball and scores very quickly.
I mean, so many crazy high leverage plays, good and bad from both teams.
Andy, do you want to talk about like the game or do you want to talk about feelings?
Let's talk about the game first.
It's both feelings and the game.
Okay, so the first, the thing that stands out to me because like the first three quarters of the game just were erased from my memory because of how awesome that fourth quarter was.
when Georgia was down three late and had first and goal to go trying to go for a win
but worst case scenario tie what did you think of the play calling sequence down there
because that was kind of befuddled that they remember that was right after Nate Fraser got
hurt so Nate Fraser is the one who's breaking tackles who is doing all
basically carrying your running game I don't think anybody else could do
what he was doing that that's the issue right there i don't think anybody else was going to be able
to run it like him and so i didn't mind running the ball on on the first play but unfortunately
they weren't going to get the same performance what did you think of running on third down
they didn't run it on third down he's sorry going on develop down and i misspoken there was 50 there was
59 or 100 a minute, minute three left when they snapped the ball.
Incomplete pass gave Ole Miss 57 seconds to go down and drive.
Do you run it there, try to score on the ground?
And if not, kick a field goal with 20-something seconds left to stop them going down the field.
Because the second they tied the game with 57 seconds left, they kind of felt like it was over.
Like, I don't know.
That was the issue right there.
Yeah, you run clock because Ole Miss is out of timeouts.
And that would have been the best thing.
By the way, the game is not over yet.
sorry they made Georgia they made Georgia kick the free kick after the safety they said
there was a second ago and Pete Golding's already been doused in Gatorade
okay now they're taking the stage back off the field they're taking the stage back off
the field oh my God is it possible to do an onside kick an onside kick from this
scenario is there any grab ass that's what they did how what did it look
like i'm not watching it what did it look like it was an onside kick that that old miss let it roll
and george recovered and the clock never started so now george is running a play pitchy woo-woo
you're going to get live play by play for me it's it's going to be terrible yeah go ahead
michael's give us your best shot this will be the greatest play in college football history if this
works cash lateral's it back i think that's lost and lucky cash again
it's still going hurry this is not over
it's not over oh man
I am so
envious of Sean McDonough and his
play it's still going
there are flags on the field it's probably over
but they're still going
how do they end with
Gunter Stockton is in the grasp he is down
I believe the game is over
that game
ended with Gunner Stockton getting sacked
that's wild
Um, you know, the, well, that was a really good game.
That was a really, really good game.
Um, all right.
So, um, if Ole Miss wins two more games, is Lane Kiffin getting a ring or what?
Like, do we don't like, he's not getting the bonuses that LSU will pay him that he would
have gotten at Ole Miss, but, uh, no, I don't think they made 500 grand on this.
Um, and some.
discourse from the boys chat i don't know if people are having this discourse too is lane kiffin happy
right now yes and no would you be happy if you were lane kiffin i would be happy for the people
that i love i would be very mad at the situation because i would want to be the one coaching the team
like i know everybody wants to pretend like they've got a pure heart and that they're a good person
i feel like if i felt like i were him i would be upset or i would not be rooting for them
I don't know.
I mean, maybe there's a part of him that's not,
but I think it would be hard to not root for all of these people
that you have relationships with,
that you helped get where they are.
But it is, this is the weirdest situation we've ever seen.
It is, I mean, we have seen it in basketball.
We saw it in basketball in 1989.
Bill Frieder is the Michigan coach.
He makes a deal to take the Arizona state job after the NCAA tournament.
Bo Schoenbeckler finds out.
he fires him he says a Michigan man will coach Michigan he elevates Steve Fisher and
Steve Fisher wins a national title yeah um he goal these two games away from doing that well I
understand that so much of coaching is about roster development and creating the team and
all those things but I do find it somewhat amusing that Pete Golding now has a bigger on the field moment
less than a month into this thing
than Lane Kiffin does in his entire career.
Yeah. Well, look,
and Brian Kelly went to LSU thinking he was going to be in the
playoff every year and he didn't get there once.
So you'd never know.
And that was what was so crazy
and why we said,
is there a chance Lane doesn't take the LSU job
or doesn't take the Florida job and just stays at Ole Miss?
And that's what I,
I mean, I think that's what I would have done.
I think that's what most people would have done.
It makes me wonder, like, if Lane Kiffin thought in the back of his head
that this team wasn't good enough to actually make the run.
And when you see who's out of the field and, like, who they're playing,
like Miami's very good.
Like, if Ole Miss, we'll break this down this week,
but like if Ole Miss scores 28 points,
like Miami's going to have a hard time keeping up offensively.
Right.
And Ole Miss score on Miami, not many people can, but Ole Miss would be capable of it.
And I think Ole Miss also would be able to mitigate some of their ends with the way that,
dude, Trinidad Chambliss played like an absolute dog in this game.
He was incredible.
The sequence where he, he's about to go down and then I think he left hand shovel past it out.
And then the next play, it looks like he's running back toward the end zone.
And it looks like he's going to lose about 20 yards.
And then he gets free and uncorks a pass.
And they end up getting a first down.
And then he rolls right.
It's a guy, I think it was stribling.
You hit down the right sideline.
Like that, it was incredible.
Mm-hmm.
He's just unbelievable.
This guy was at Ferris State last year.
He signed to be a backup at Ole Miss.
It's unbelievable the way that he played.
And I saw some NFL people even saying that he's climbing up the draft boards.
You know, I mean, I don't like in terms of his athleticism and the way that he extends
plays Andy and keeps his eyes down the field and always finds the open man.
It feels like when he rifles it down there.
Like, you know, you get the sense when you're watching.
quarterback when they throw the ball down field that like it's going to be completed like i had that
feeling with trinidad chambers this game the play that the play that got them into field goal range
at the end that throw was like a seeing eyeball that that curved around the db and landed in
again i think it was scribbling who caught this pass just as he got to the spot and he caught
it in stride i mean it was incredible just incredible this is it right here the $20 question
This will keep me up tonight.
When we're done, I'm going to think of this before bed.
I will not lose one wink of sleep over this question.
I don't know why it'll keep you up at ask.
Does Lane Kiffin get recognized as a championship coach and get a ring if they win at all?
And I know, I will not get a ring.
You're not going to make him a ring, but would you view him as a championship coach?
You've got plenty of money from LSU.
You can make your own ring.
But would you view him as a coach, a championship coach?
Nope.
He left his team.
It's wild.
It's wild stuff.
If Pete Golding leads into a championship, it's Pete Golding's championship.
In 2019, before the NIL and Transfer Portal era, 2018, what would you say was the percentage of the coach's job?
How would you do the pie chart of it?
Roster assembly, coaching, X's and O's culture, all the things.
Like, would roster assembly be like 85% in 2019?
Yes.
And what is it now?
Is it still 85%?
Yes.
but it's different.
It's a different 85%.
There are more ways to assemble a roster
which allow teams like Ole Miss to be in this
and not like in 2019,
Georgia and Ole Miss play
and Georgia beats Ole Miss 40 to 19
because Georgia's backups are as good as Ole Miss's starters.
Yeah.
And that's not the way it is anymore.
What you saw tonight were two very evenly matched teams
who played a game earlier this season in Athens
in which they were also very evenly matched.
And that's what Lane Kiffin did for Ole Miss,
is he took advantage of the changing rules,
read the room on the new era faster than anybody else did,
and allowed them to step up.
Now, it wasn't him alone.
Keith Carter, the AD, Walker Jones,
who runs the Grove Collective,
they were smarter than everybody else.
Keith Carter is smarter than other ADs
because other ADs are like,
well, oh, I got to keep building this new stadium.
edition. And Keith Carter is like, no, we're going to put the money toward players, because
you know what makes a stadium better? Better players. Yeah. Andy, you've got a better photographic
memory of the last time coaches have done something. When's Kirby Smart's biggest win?
Like, when's his last big win in a high leverage moment? Are we going back three years now,
four years? I mean, beating Texas this year was pretty big. Beating Texas in the end.
No, I mean, like a big post season. I mean, I guess they won't.
the SEC championship last year.
So that would probably
Yeah, I mean, the national championship
after the, I'm just like,
I'm just like, how Alabama fans were reacting
to DeBoer today. And obviously, it doesn't have as much
equity built up with the program as Kirby Smart.
I see how some of the Ohio State fans
were reacting to Ryan Day.
And I'm wondering, like, are Georgia
fans getting stir crazy? And like,
how much equity does Kirby Smart have?
Don't do this.
No, no, I'm not saying, is he going to be fired
or something? Don't know.
No, they're yelling at Mike Bobo. They're mad at him.
They're probably blaming Mike Bobo for whatever the play call was on fourth and nine
or whatever the poor communication was that caused half the team to not realize they were
snapping the ball, or at least the left tackle will not realize they were snapping
the ball.
They're not worried about Kirby Smart.
They're not.
Twitter's just maybe a scary place when teams are losing, and I got to separate those two things.
Those are the ultimate psychopaths.
And then the other thing, I mean, I just said stir crazy.
like wanting them out or anything.
No.
Of course they're bad.
They want to win national championship every year.
They're Georgia fans.
And then how much does Ole Miss's performance in the last few weeks,
their first two games under Golding,
make you feel like they got the right guy?
Like can you learn a lot about this too?
Like can you just say like it's a fact.
Ole Miss found their right guy and this is perfect?
Like have you seen enough already to say that?
Or like do you need to see more roster building how they,
I'm pretty good with it right now.
I'll be honest with you,
I'm pretty good with it right now.
I think being able to prepare this team
in this situation
and win a game like this
tells you an awful lot about a person.
Now, Pete Golding is still going to have
to assemble rosters as well as Lane Kiffin did,
or this all goes away.
But as long as he can do that,
we've now seen him in two playoff games,
one that was extremely tight,
back and forth.
he made mistakes in that game.
Like the clock management at the end of the first half was an abomination.
But he also kept his team together.
I mean, think about how much of the poor Mies Ole Miss could have had.
Remember when the refs missed the face mask call?
Ole Miss should have had a first down there.
That should have kept the drive alive.
They should have been able to salt the game way right there.
Instead, Georgia comes back, Georgia ties it.
And Ole Miss does not even blink, gets the ball back with less than a minute to go, does not blink.
That's coaching right there.
Yeah, for sure.
And also, given the way that he has, like, illustrated his charisma, Andy and the way that he has handled like this otherwise impossible situation that is really hard to put anybody in, let alone a first time coach.
and the resources that Ole Miss had to have
in order to do what they did in the portal
the last few years, it seems like a relative lock
that he would be good at recruiting.
I can't imagine how somebody with his charisma
and there's another type of recruiting
that he's got to be good at.
Yeah.
He's got to hire the offensive staff.
Yeah.
So that's the other piece of it.
Yeah.
But it feels like all the early returns here
are like way through the roof right now, obviously in the moments after that.
You think Lane expected his new offensive staff at LSU that was his offensive staff
at Ole Miss?
Do you think he expected them back for a staff meeting in Baton Rouge tomorrow?
Yeah.
They're not coming, buddy.
I think that Lane Kiffin leaving his team, although LSU is a amazing opportunity and I
totally understand why he took it, is almost a admission.
through actions, not words, that he didn't think the team was good enough to win the national
title. Because I think if he thought in his heart that they were going to go do it,
he would have maybe stayed. Is that a fair, like, hypothesis?
I think so. Now, what did we say the entire time that was all going on?
The ceiling at Ole Miss, LSU in Florida, is the same. And Lane proved that.
Lane proved that
by building this team into what it is.
But by leaving, he said,
I think LSU has a higher ultimate ceiling than Ole Miss.
Otherwise, why wouldn't you just stay?
Because they were going to pay you the same.
Yeah.
I think early lines I saw had Ole Miss as a four-point underdog to Miami.
I don't know if that's real or not.
I think, you know, Twitter sometimes.
Let's check the BetMGM app and see if we got any lines yet.
That's up yet.
I can try to check my app too.
But this is just incredible.
I mean, Trinidad Shameless.
And that's the interesting thing is we've been talking about Trinidad Shamblis
as almost a, you know, a foregone conclusion that it's going to be a fight
for him trying to get the waiver to play next season in college.
Nobody's really even talking about him to the NFL until tonight.
But Trinidad Shambliss has been one of the best quarterbacks in the country all year.
I mean, slippery, poised, big arm, athletic playmaking ability.
How tall is he?
Accurate.
He's not super tall, but he's tall enough.
He's not Russell Wilson.
Yeah.
I mean, it seems like he has all the traits that would make, I mean, and obviously what he's doing on the, you know,
on the biggest moments.
But,
man,
I'm kind of blown away.
Question for Mr. Reds,
44.
Which of the former Sabin
assistance joins Kirby
with the title?
While there are four
former assistants left
and Bama fans
would take any
over their current coach.
So that's Mario Cristobal,
former Alabama
offensive line coach
under Nick Saban.
Pete Golding,
former Alabama
defensive coordinator under
Nick Saban.
Dan Lanning,
who was an analyst
at Alabama,
who then went with, he ended up with Kirby Smart as the defensive coordinator
after a period as the defensive coordinator under Mike Norville at Memphis.
And then you've got, why am I blanking on?
Oh, Kurt Signetti, former Nick Saban assistant,
who was on the initial Alabama staff with Nick Saban.
Wait, is Dan Lanning pretty credible?
Do you consider Dan Lanning to be on the Sabin tree or the Smart tree?
He's on the Mike Norvel tree and the Todd Graham tree.
He's bounced around a lot.
So it's some Mike Norvel, it's some Todd Graham, it's some Mick Sabin, it's some Kirby Smart.
Like he legitimately picked up a lot from a lot of places.
But the fact that the four remaining assistants at least spent some time in some role under Sabin is wild stats.
Yes.
It's crazy.
Yeah, it's another one of those crazy Sabin stats that just can't, you can't believe it exists.
well it all comes back to
Nick Saban and look
again this is probably
why Nick Saban quit because a team
like Ole Miss can beat a team like Georgia now
and that's
that's not what Nick Saban wanted
he didn't want those types of teams to be able to have
a chance he didn't want to play
in a world where
Ole Miss Indiana
Miami could be in the playoff
and win
man
are you
are you
at this Miami?
Ohio State, and I get it, Miami won all those titles in the 80s and 90s and in 2001.
But Miami has been basically an ACC also ran for most of this century.
Indiana is the second losing his program of all time.
Ole Miss, since the SEC split in the divisions has never played in the SEC championship game.
Think about that.
And these are three...
of the final four team standing,
and no one is doubting that they're deserving of being there.
They deserve to be in that spot.
All four of them.
When's the last time we got to the final four
and we felt like all four could win it all?
Never.
Because we've only had a final four since 2014.
We never had one in the four team.
Right.
It's like the field is wide.
open yeah last year we didn't feel that way because ohio state was just crushing everybody
this is it this is the first time the final four has felt like anyone could win it and i i
legitimately believe that i i don't know who i'd pick if you we'll have to pick it like tomorrow
we're going to pick the semis i if you if you said right now give me your national champion i'm not sure i could
you won. I don't know. I mean, I think Indiana would be the favorite, but we'll see how they
match up and, you know, laying four against Oregon. I mean, it's a tough proposition. And you always feel
like, or you definitely feel like no matter who wins on either side of the bracket that they will
be able to beat whoever's waiting for them on the other side. And it goes both ways.
Yeah, it really all comes down to how do you play and how do you match up against that individual
team? How do you play that that day? And this is, this is, this.
This was so much fun, and this is what this tournament needed because it had a couple of blowouts earlier today, and there were no fun to watch.
The better team won in both games, but it was no fun.
This game was all manner of fun.
It is shockful of storylines.
We were going to get a great storyline either way, because it was either going to be Ole Miss with Pete Golding coaching his third game in the college football playoff semifinals, or it was going to be Carson,
Beck playing against Georgia.
So either way, we were going to get something amazing.
Yeah.
The Uno 93 says NIL really brought parody to college football.
It did at a certain level.
Among the SEC and the Big Ten teams, I think it certainly did.
You know, not necessarily below that level yet.
Yeah, Miami.
Yeah.
But the thing is, Florida State and Clemson were always kind of assembling rock.
as the SEC and Big Tim teams were,
and Miami certainly hired Mario Cristobal with that mindset.
So I guess, yeah, we'll put the ACC in there, too,
or at least the top of it.
I don't know about the Big 12 yet.
Need a few more years of Texas Tech.
You know, I had a really bad year picking games, Andy.
Three and O today.
There you go.
4 and O for this round.
Thanks to your Mulligan, yeah.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, I was three and one.
I missed Ole Miss, Georgia.
But that was, I thought, I'm trying to think,
because when Ole Miss got the ball back with 58 seconds left,
I was pretty sure Ole Miss was going to be able to get in field goal range.
Yeah.
And their kicker was lights out all night.
You know, and I don't like to just,
everything's revisionist history.
But like, when they threw it on third and goal,
I was like, I'm not sure I would have done that.
But if they would have scored, then it would have been the right call.
So like, you know,
And that's the thing, like, I go back to the fake punt earlier, which wound up getting Georgia a field goal that they obviously needed.
That fake punt was a crazy call because it was a really cute play.
There was a lot going on with that play.
It could have completely failed.
It was almost going to be smart fake punt redemption.
Yes, for the 2018 SEC championship game, one of the worst fake punts ever called.
Which was actually somewhat similar to the Kalin-de-Bore freeze play where they tried
to hide Ty Simpson because they remember they tried to hide Justin Fields on that fake punt
and Alabama players were just pointing at him like that's Justin Fields he's not supposed to be
there yeah it was like Lloyd Christmas said in the booth and dumb and dumber yeah so all right
this is going to be a blast of a week as we get ready for these games we have Miami Ole Miss in the
Fiesta Bowl. We have Indiana, Oregon in the Peach Bowl. The winners of those games will play for
the national title where I am right now in Miami in a couple of weeks. This has been so much fun.
This has been a fun season. The playoff, we didn't get every game tight and fun, but we've gotten
more than we did last year. And that is the, was the Georgia,
old miss game the best game of the 12 team playoff so far in the two years that they've had it okay um
Penn State Notre Dame was really good last year but I'd say this one was more fun yeah this one was
maybe the most fun I mean the Ohio State Texas game last year was pretty good that was really good too yeah
but Texas and Arizona State one might have I actually think that Texas Arizona state was the most fun
of so far that was an insane game now with the overtime needed a
Yeah, Texas needed the fourth and 13 to stay alive and they win in overtime.
Yeah.
Okay, so, but this one, this one definitely is either one or two.
And listen, if Ole Miss can beat that Georgia team, because Georgia was one of the teams I said,
I definitely think they can win the national title.
If Ole Miss can beat them, they can beat anybody left in the bracket.
Miami can beat anybody left in the bracket if they can beat Ohio State.
Indiana is probably the best team left in the bracket.
Oregon is talented enough to beat any of these teams.
We are in for a thrill ride these next two weeks.
I can't wait.
Tomorrow, by the way, we're going to pick the games of the semifinal.
So live show 3 p.m. Eastern Time on three sports YouTube page.
So set your calendars or subscribe to the On Three Sports YouTube channel and you'll get a push notification when we go live.
Live show 3 p.m.
The transfer portal has been open for 17 minutes, Ari.
we'll see who winds up in it.
Now, we already know some people who've announced it,
but now we'll see who actually puts their name in.
And so our guy Pete Nacos is probably pulling it all night or tonight.
But we're going to learn more about that tomorrow.
We're going to break that down.
And then we will fire away with the picks for the semi-final games.
in the Peach Bowl
you've got
oh wait we got
we have our first
transfer portal prediction arey
a little preview for tomorrow you ready
this is going to stun you
former Iowa
state quarterback Rocco Beck
has been crystal bald
RPMed
sorry
RPMed
to Penn State
I know you're shocked
that Rocco Beck might
rejoin Matt Campbell at Penn State.
It's great fit.
We'll break that down tomorrow, but I'm wondering this.
We're going live at three weeks.
If only we have evidence of what Rocco Beck looks like playing for Matt Campbell.
It might be a wild morning, though.
We're already in the portal era where the portal is open.
So, yeah, it's going to be a great day tomorrow.
And I'm super excited to break down these games, get some good sleep.
And, you know, here's the last thought I wanted to have.
If the playoff has four teams.
in the final four
that all
could conceivably
win the national title.
This is the playoff working.
You might have some
you might have some games that aren't great
but like this is
functional. This is working.
Let's just try to keep it on.
If you wanted a multi-round
playoff, which I did,
you wanted fun games in each round,
which they weren't all fun, but we had
some fun games in each round.
And you wanted a situation where when you get to this point, everybody's got a shot.
Everybody's earned their way there.
And I feel like everybody has and everybody does.
So here we go.
Buckle up everybody.
We'll talk to you tomorrow.
3 p.m. Eastern Time live.
Transfer Portal update and we pick the semifinals.
Talk to that.
