Starting point is 00:00:01 On tonight's Andy Noir 93 instant reaction presented by Polly Market. Ole Miss comes away victorious in Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford. The Rebels rub it in, Trinidad Shambliss comes through. Plus a crazy day in college football. One of the wildest endings you will ever see in the Bairndaville, NC State game, Kentucky. goes into college station and whips Texas A&M. Florida State jumps all over Alabama and then lightning happens and Alabama happens. What a night. Florida goes to Auburn and wins in the SEC debut for the Gators and Auburn and their new coaches.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Just an incredible night. We will talk about it all coast to coast, sea to shining sea. It's time for an Instagram. reaction from Andy and Orion 3 presented by Polymarket. Starting point is 00:02:21 Welcome to Annie Narion 3 presented by Polly Market. So they just played Colin Baton Rouge in Oxford. And you know what they played after that? Neck. They played neck. They played neck. What a game. What a game.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Ole Miss wins at 30. to 24 and LSU on the goal line toward the end of the game. The next to last play, the penultimate play, off the hands of the backup tight end. Lane Kiffin probably in his mind, maybe out loud going, that's why I tried so hard to get Dayquan right. You know, it's a good segue to the takeaway that I have here,
Starting point is 00:02:59 Randy, which is how can a sport be so dysfunctional, so nonsensical and so weird off the field in Dayquan, right in trying to get NFL players to come back would fall under that category. Courtrooms, portal, coaches being fired, coaches being hired, all the different things that occur in the offseason to come together to form something that is that high quality. Like, do you ever think about how that works? Like, you would think that the dysfunction would sometimes, like, fall. Like, that was, well, no, the mess.
Starting point is 00:03:31 The mess is what created that. All of that. Everything. The way Lane Kiffin left. all the back and forth, Lane trying to get LSU kicked out of the SEC by trying to bring back in a public. All of it contributed to what you saw tonight.
Starting point is 00:03:50 It was incredible. But it was just great football. I thought it was just a great game all around. And I mean, Ole Miss jumped to a big lead. It did not look like LSU was going to be competitive at all. And then when you get to 2424, 24, you're like, oh,
Starting point is 00:04:10 LSU's going to win this game. 100%. So I thought that that was going to happen for like the first quarter, because as you watched the first quarter and it bled into the second quarter and all the way to halftime where they held a 17-point lead,
Starting point is 00:04:25 I think you could make the case almost for a certainty that Ole Miss wanted to win more. I think it was more personal to them. They were in their house. They were playing against Lane. You know the story. And it felt like that was like playing through the team.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I made a comment earlier in the week as can beat Golding get his team to play football the way the crowd feels. Angry, passionate, revenge in their hearts, all those different things. But I didn't know if they would be able to sustain it for an entire half or a four-quarter game, meaning like LSU wouldn't punch back. And when we got to halftime, it didn't even feel like LSU was really in it. That touchdown pass that Trinidad Chambliss had right before halftime, man, was a death blow to me. I mean, it was a beautiful Heisman moment, darts. I mean, like, that's an incredible escape and throw.
Starting point is 00:05:14 It was just like, how is this? Have you seen that movie with Angelina Jolie where she plays a hit woman who can like bend the bullets by the way she fires the gun? Like, that's what it looked like. It looked like he was bending the ball. This tractor beam sucked me right in. Like, it was like perfect. Andy, the thing I want to say, though, is that then LSU took,
Starting point is 00:05:37 the momentum in the second half. LSU owned the third quarter, began the beginning of the fourth, and for Ole Miss to find a way, because it felt like they were going to lose, let's be honest. Everybody watching that, I thought that LSU was going to come back and win, and that Lane Kiffin was going to be the ultimate troll, and like, Oxford would never be the same. I honestly don't even know the alternate universe of what that city looks like if they don't, if they don't hold on to win. But the way that Trinidad Chambliss, won that game at the end, going down the field. It almost felt like it was just impossible to stop.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Going for two at the end, impossible to stop. And, you know, they won the game. I got a text from an NFL scout who's pretty high up with the NFL team saying that Chambliss is by far the best player in college football. And if you had to pick anybody in the entire sport to go win you a game, it's him. And I think that he ultimately proved that tonight. I also want to file a formal apology to everybody who listens to our show and to people who read On3.com.
Starting point is 00:06:38 During the offseason, I made a top 10 list of players in Trinidad Chamblis was not on it. And I got to say, that's got to be one of the most moronic mistakes I've ever made. Like, that's even worse than like having DJ Lagway number one the previous summer, I think. So I'm sorry. I'm stupid. You're smart. I'm dumb. You're amazing.
Starting point is 00:06:57 I'm not me. You're handsome. I didn't even have a list. I'm not talking to you. Okay. Okay. Yeah. You know these things about me already.
Starting point is 00:07:03 But really, really stupid. I am in awe of. him. And as we do our Heisman trophy straw poll on Sunday with On 3, I don't know. Could you be a person that has a case for Trinidad number one after that? How would you have a case
Starting point is 00:07:18 for anybody else, number one? That's what I'm saying. Like, what would we do the case against him be? Like, that was remarkable. There is no case against him. Yeah. 33 or 48, 363 yards, two TDs. And remember, Kiwan Lacey was out for a lot of that game. I mean, that was
Starting point is 00:07:34 huge. Like, the LSU losing Trades Green was massive also, but losing Q1 Lacey for Ole Miss was very tough. Tony in the chat, Camaro Taylor is better than Trinidad. We will get to Camaro Taylor. We will get to that. We will get to that. It's a long show, ladies and gentlemen. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Listen, it's week three. We can't be talking about how the Egg Bowl might determine the Heisman trophy, but let's just say it might. This is going to be incredible because remember what we said all week. The SEC set the trap for these teams. LSU's got to go home, bounce back. Like LSU Texas A&M, the loser of that game next week is off a cliff. Off a cliff.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Yes. And meanwhile, Florida Ole Miss, the winner of that game is thinking playoffs. Yeah. I mean, that felt like a playoff game to me. That reminded me a lot of what we saw from Ole Miss during its playoff run. And I know that we're always trying to search for takeaways and things. but my takeaway is kind of the same thing that I took away from Lane Kiffin's comments earlier in the week when he said that Ole Miss is playing with the pressure and they've got the Heisman finalists.
Starting point is 00:08:46 And, you know, I think that when Lane Kiffin made this decision to go to LSU, that anybody who has been around the sport, watches the sport, covered the sport, love the sport, for any of the past 25 years or 100 years knows that traditionally speaking, LSU is the place that you want to be. It's got the biggest stadium and the biggest donors and the biggest talent pool. And it's traditionally just been great, which is why coaches tend to win national titles there. But if the reason for leaving Ole Miss is because of all those things
Starting point is 00:09:18 and the ceiling that you perceive you would have at LSU, it is kind of crazy to me that's so soon in this new era that Ole Miss can have all those things at the same time. and tonight, Ole Miss was better than LSU, which means that Ole Miss has all the same ceiling that LSU does. Now I understand that Lane Kiffin is also.
Starting point is 00:09:39 You blew it! I mean, I don't know. I honestly, I don't know if I'm ready to go that far because I know that there is the counterpoint, which is LSU is in the first months of Lane Kiffin experience, and Ole Miss was built up for five years with him.
Starting point is 00:09:55 But I also don't know if that's how college football works anymore. It's not a four or five year. Imagine, good they'd be if they didn't have their old coach trying to pick, pick players off their, like Prince, let's say Lane had stayed, okay?
Starting point is 00:10:06 Yeah. So Trinidad stays, Keywan stays, T.J. Daughery stays. Prince Will O'Meelems stays. Ari. This would probably be a better Ole Miss team than it is now. Might be the best team in the country.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Lane, you blew it. Yeah. You didn't recognize that the ceilings we're the same now. Yeah. I mean. Or,
Starting point is 00:10:35 or hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on. Yeah. Hold on. Could it be that Pete Golding is just as good of coach? I don't know about you, but if you
Starting point is 00:10:49 didn't tell me anything that was happening and I missed the last seven or nine months since Lane left and I was watching that Ole Miss game against LSU and you didn't tell me anything that happened. that was undisernable from Ole Miss playing at its highest levels under Lane Kiffin.
Starting point is 00:11:06 No? It was, yeah, it was the same. Same exact thing. And, and, let's go to the two-point conversion, which changed the way that Lane probably called the last drive. These are marbles that I'm doing, by the way. Yes, okay. That two-point conversion,
Starting point is 00:11:26 you see them line up for it, you're like, they're crazy. And then you hear Trinidad do that hard clap. and they jump half the distance. They line it up again, hard clap. They jump half the distance. Ole Misses players disciplined, didn't jump. It's hard as an offensive lineman not to jump on that too. Even though you know it, it's still hard.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Meanwhile, LSU gets down into the red zone. Boom, they jump. That was when they had the ball. that was when they needed a touchdown. They're down five extra yards. Pete Golding's team played better. Pete Golding's team was more disciplined. Now, you can say they were at home.
Starting point is 00:12:18 LSU was on the road and this was Tiger Stadium. Those situations would be reversed. And maybe you're right. Maybe you're right. But I would say that Pete Golding showed he can do what Lane Kiffin was doing. and maybe better. Maybe. Remember, Lane Kippin and Pete Golding coached to Ole Miss against Georgia last year. One of them won and one of them lost.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Remember which was which? So that part's going to be fun. All right, if you were watching on Twitter, now's the time to head to YouTube. We'll have the link. You can also find the link on Ari and I's feeds on Twitter. So we'll see you on YouTube. Am I wrong, Ari? Did I, am I going too far, saying, that. No, no, I do. I just like, everything in life is about context. I'm trying my best to not be as reactionary, but I do think that everything I can be on freezing cold takes. I'm the person who
Starting point is 00:13:22 tweeted right before the play at the end of NC State Vaynerbilt. You got to take your safety here, don't you? Yeah. So, you know, I just, any, if Ole Miss can win the national championship, which I believe unequivocally is proven, given the run they went on what we saw tonight, that was a team that's good enough to traverse the playoff. In this new world of college football, Andy, the ceilings of teams and the resources that they have, I mean, I still think that LSU is probably on the surface a better job. But given the position that Lane Kiffin was in, given the way that that place felt about him, the build that he already did, like, I wonder leaving a place with the same ceiling that would
Starting point is 00:14:03 have made you a statue to go to LSU. I wonder if you look back in 10 years ago, did he make a mistake? I think there's a chance because I think the sport has changed. I think there's no question that 10 years ago you would leave Ole Miss for LSU or you'd leave Ole Miss for Florida, which were the two jobs he had a choice of. I said it at the time. I said it over and over when he was trying to decide. This is when he was looking at Florida too.
Starting point is 00:14:34 What's the difference? You're already in the playoff at all. miss. They clearly understand how to operate in this era in a way that neither Florida nor LSU had proven they can. So again, there's something to be said for having an administration that knows what they're doing that understands how this version of the sport works. He may have blown it. Yeah. I mean, this is the thing that happens when you lose, Andy. These are the questions that you have to answer. Now, who knows, four months will go by and maybe the perspective changes. But I think that this could be a cautionary tale for anybody who's going to a place that was a traditional power at a place that has a chance to win.
Starting point is 00:15:25 You know, like if Kurt Signetti left Indiana to go coach Florida State because Florida State was always the place. Right, because they've won more national titles in their history. Yeah, just because 10 years ago, it would have been a no-brainer. Like, I'm not sure that like the same stakes or the same. measuring stick of how we view jobs is the same. It's just not. I mean, this is proof of it. Yes, this is indeed proof of it. And Lane's got to get them off the mat because Texas A&M is the team that emptied out Tiger Stadium last year that got Brian Kelly fired. And Texas A&M just got worked by Kentucky. And I know what you're thinking. Well, they got worked by Kentucky. LSU's going to be, we don't know that. There's some variability in performances this year.
Starting point is 00:16:14 So what we do know is that those are both teams that came into the season with playoff aspirations. And the team that loses next week is back to the wall. And we're not even out of September yet. All right. It's kind of crazy to think that, man. I know that we're not even in October yet. But like if LSU was a two-lost team a week from now, who want to talk about like highs and lows. you know, and I don't know if LSU fans are still in like year one mode.
Starting point is 00:16:47 I don't think there is a year one mode. Like I think LSU's expectations and, you know, it's at least make the playoff. If you don't make the playoff, it's an utter failure this year. Yeah. So, you know, here's the thing, though. LSU, this is a rivalry game, so I know that LSU fans are upset.
Starting point is 00:17:05 But the game, if Ole Miss would have lost, I think would have hurt and meant so much more to Ole Miss than it does. the LSU in terms of just like how it feels. Well, that's what the, that's what the LSU fans are saying a night. Somebody in the chat said, yeah, the greatest night in Ole Miss history is just a blip for LSU. Well, one, it's not the greatest night in Ole Miss history. Like, they actually won playoff games last year. Remember? Yeah. The ones Lane Kiffin wasn't at, they won't them. Of course, it's personal to Lane Kiffin and don't lie to yourself and act like it's not. But in terms of program stature, if your coach leaves and you take that as him telling you directly, and the only way to take it is
Starting point is 00:17:40 this way, that you are not as good as them. He goes. to a place, assembles a roster in one off season, comes into your building and kicks your ass, that is like not an easy pill to swallow. And if they would have blown the game today, that also would not have been an easy pill to swallow. So from like a program strength standpoint, like this was a massive, massive win for Ole Miss. And now you can start having the other discussion, which is if you add up all the biggest games of Lane Kiffin's career, all the things that he's won, I know you should have and it's right to assign the fact that he would have led a team to a playoff last year.
Starting point is 00:18:17 But Pete Golding has more wins on stages like that in his short career than I think Lane Kiffin does. And like that, and like that is like really big for Ole Miss. You saw without Lane Kiffin on your sideline tonight against a top 10 team, a team that resembled or if not was better than some of the best teams that Lane Kiffin had at your place. Now, that might be part in part because of what Lane Kiffin built. Obviously, he was the head coach when they found
Starting point is 00:18:45 Trinidad had Chambliss at Ferris State. You know, having the best player in college football does help. But in coaching X's and O's practicality standpoint, what did you see tonight that was different from last year before he left? All right, we got a question in the chat. Is Greg Sankey drinking a Jack and Coke tonight?
Starting point is 00:19:06 I don't know if you're probably. I would be. Got one right here. Let's go. Oh, man. I am sorely tempted right now, but I got to stay, stay sharp to get through the rest of this show, I think, Ari. This is a, there's a lot to get through. There's a lot to talk about because we had a show reacting to Kentucky beating Texas A&M.
Starting point is 00:19:33 We had a show reacting to Clemson coming back and beating North Carolina, but there's so many other things we need to talk about now. where do we want to go from this? Do we want to stay in the SEC? Do we want to bounce around a little bit? Where do you want to go? You know, I don't know how you want to attack, like, games that we've already done videos on,
Starting point is 00:19:53 but, you know, I do think that maybe Alabama could be the next turn because Alabama is scared. Yeah, let's go to Florida State Alabama. Let's go to Florida State Alabama. By the way, lightning delays across the country this week. You saw a two-hour delay at Clemson, North Carolina, Yeah, close to North Carolina. The South Carolina Mississippi State game was delayed for a while.
Starting point is 00:20:14 This Alabama Florida State game got delayed twice for a total of over two hours. And Florida State jumped all over Alabama. I mean, it looked exactly like the game last season. And the funniest tweet I saw is every time he plays Florida State, Kailen DeBore turns into this and it was just a picture of Mike Norville. I mean, it felt like deja vu. I mean, they had double-digit lead in the first quarter. And like this game was like delayed a few hours before it and then it was delayed like an hour in the middle of it.
Starting point is 00:20:48 But then Alabama just overpowered them. Andy, I don't know what your prevailing thought is here because Florida State did score 36 points. But to me, Keel and Russell, I think, took his first step into peak stardom mode. I don't know if, you know, the 57-yard touchdown run. Alabama's up 33, 28. So it was 28, 26 Florida State. That was the last lead Florida State had, and it was in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:21:17 So Alabama scores on an E.J. Coral run takes the lead. It's 3328. Alabama gets the ball back. And Keel and Russell takes off scrambling. It was a scramble. I don't think that was a design run. Maybe it was a design run. But at any rate, he turns on the afterburners,
Starting point is 00:21:37 57-yard touchdown run, and it was like, okay, that's what he can do that so few other quarterbacks can pull off. And by the way, he was very good throwing the ball, too. He's very careful with the ball. He was trying not to, you know, not to make any mistakes with 23 of 30, 320 yards, three touchdown. So 10.7 yards per attempt, very efficient day, no interceptions. like this guy's a star and Alabama is so much better because of him. If Alabama had a replacement level quarterback, they don't win this game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Yeah. You know, and they didn't have a replacement level quarterback last year. They had a quarterback that was a first round quarterback. But, you know, the thing I think is the best thing about Keelan is, A, he's very young, still has only started what three games, has a lot of growth to undergo. but when you watch him play, you get the sense that Alabama has a next level to rise to. And that's probably the whole calculus that went into play for Kailin DeBoer when he was making this decision, right?
Starting point is 00:22:45 Like, who do we put on the field here that will unlock something for our team and make us collectively better offensively? Now, obviously, Alabama would not have preferred to have to score 50 points to win by 14 against Florida State. I'm going to give them somewhat of a pass on that as a result of the wonky schedule. and the choppy, you know, choppiness of the rain delays and stuff. But I'm a little concerned about an Alabama defense that looked pretty unstoppable last week in the second half against Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:23:17 But so Ashton Daniels, this stat light is bizarre. 17 to 29 for 377 yards. So that's 13 yards per attempt. Two touchdowns, three interceptions. He was throwing the ball into danger a lot. But Alabama was just giving up massive chunk play. over and over and over again. 100% Andy, but like it just
Starting point is 00:23:39 they looked so good last week. I don't know if I'm ready to sound the alarm yet. And though when I saw offensively, I always just fall in love with quarterbacks that can do what he did. I mean, from throwing and running. I mean, he did both. It may be that this is the kind of game,
Starting point is 00:23:53 Alabama is going to have to win going forward. Like this score may look similar down the road. So they've got South Carolina, and we'll talk about South Carolina in a minute. But the stretch of at Mississippi State, Georgia at Tennessee. If you're going to win those games, you can't play defense like you did today.
Starting point is 00:24:14 You have to be better defensively. You cannot give up that many big plays. Yeah. I mean, I also think that you are in a deja vu type moment, and I know some of the players are different, but some of them were the same, of, oh, my God, it's happening again. And you go into the rain delay in the middle of the game,
Starting point is 00:24:32 and you're losing during that delay, and then you come out and you have two quick interception and then you flip the game back. I think that there's something to, you know, latch on to there in terms of optimism if you're an Alabama fan because, like, snowballing does happen in the sport. Momentum is real. Confidence is real.
Starting point is 00:24:47 You know, Ashton Daniels had a few plays that, you know, could have built on themselves and he could have gained some experience. Obviously, you referenced the Iron Bowl performance last year in the way that he played in that game. You know, you start getting excited. You start feeling like you have momentum. Next thing, you know, you're losing a game late in the third quarter that you thought you were going to win by 20.
Starting point is 00:25:05 So, you know, Alabama, to me, I think, has asserted itself as a top 10 team in the country. And the other thing, too, that you also have to consider is the fact that Keel and Russell is only going to get better. Like, if this is the performance that we're getting out of him in his third start ever, like throwing, passing, electric elevation, like all the things that you do when you pick this guy. Like, if I'm an Alabama fan, like, I'm pretty pleased by today. Now, it doesn't mean that you don't get upset about defensive, you know, breakdowns and things to clean up. but what team doesn't have things to clean up. And, you know, right. You go back to two weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:25:39 Ole Miss was giving up big chunk plays the entire game to Louisville. And tonight, they're playing high level football against the top five team and winning it. So, you know, I'm not a bad. We'll talk about Louisville in a second, but Louisville may do that to everybody too. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they, they are an explosive team offensively. So, you know, I don't know, Florida State, not a very good team.
Starting point is 00:26:02 obviously Mike Norvel's in purgatory at the moment. Okay, but let me ask you about that. Do you feel better about them now after this, or is it the same? I mean, there's really nothing to gain from feeling better about them. So, I mean, I guess, like, maybe there will be a tougher out. But, like, if you think that they putting up 36 points in Tuscaloosa means something, does it mean enough to save his job or for a complete reset in the off season? I don't think they're going to fire him tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:26:34 They're playing central Arkansas next week. They're going to fire the man before he plays his alma mater. They play Virginia after that. Virginia lost to West Virginia on Saturday. Weird game. Weird game. West Virginia just ran all over them. So I, yeah, there's a chance that maybe Florida State can hang with them.
Starting point is 00:26:55 So I don't know. We'll see on Florida State. the at Louisville at Miami back to back is pretty brutal. So I think it's probably going to end the way you think it's going to end. But, you know, there's maybe a glimmer of hope there in the first quarter. Two years ago when Florida State was truly awful, when you would watch Florida State play, you'd be like, oh my God, wow, this is truly awful. Like, I don't think this team is that.
Starting point is 00:27:25 It was pretty awful. it was pretty awful at the end of last year too. Like the Stanford game, NC State game, they were pretty awful. So, like, clearly nowhere in the same hemisphere as Florida State standard, but I don't like, my eyes don't bleed when I watch it.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Well, let's, okay, let's, let's stick with coaches that may have some problems. Let's go to Columbia, South Carolina, because that was a wild game. South Carolina jumps to an early lead, and then Mississippi State pours it on in the second half. Mississippi State scores 24 points in a row, winds up winning 4134. Camario Taylor is him.
Starting point is 00:28:05 He, like, he looks incredible. It's like Anthony Richardson, if he had, if he could throw a touch. Can hyperbolic already come out to play for a second? And read defenses. Yeah, go ahead. Does anybody in Coach Rob have a bigger arm than him? No. Okay, so that's not crazy.
Starting point is 00:28:26 I mean, it's not Joe Milton big, but nobody's in. Yeah, Joe, Joe, Joe Milton's arm is like, like an actual like warhead. Like the way that he flicks his wrist and the ball. The difference is Camaro Taylor gets the ball to the intended target, which is a lot better than Joe Milton. His release is also faster than Milton's too, isn't it? It is. It's a great release.
Starting point is 00:28:51 It's very quick, just kind of flicking the wrist. It looks like he's playing darts with a football. Like honestly, he's like, he's just like, flicking his wrists and the ball is like you can almost hear the thing humming in the air. Yeah. And he's 6, 4, 2.30 and runs really fast. I don't really know what Mississippi State's ceiling is this year. I don't know if this is a team that we're going to look up in November and they're going to be in the heart of the SEC race or if it's just a much improved team from what they've been.
Starting point is 00:29:18 But what I do know is, is that all the things that I just got done saying about Keel and Russell and the elevating nature of players who are that. that physically gifted, like there's nothing that that does not apply to Camario Taylor. Like, I mean, like, honestly, if he turns out to be one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country and there's already chatter that that might be the case, how much better is Mississippi state as a team as a result of that? I saw somebody post earlier on Twitter while we were watching the game that Trinidad Chambliss is more important to Ole Miss than any individual player in the country. is important to their team.
Starting point is 00:29:58 And I think that he's obviously in the conversation for that. Oh, yeah. The first player that popped into my head is Camario Taylor in terms of what he means to Mississippi State. Now, the stakes might not be as high. I don't know what Mississippi State's going to end up doing from a ceiling standpoint, but South Carolina is a pretty physical, pretty talented team. And to go on the road and, you know, erase a deficit and cruise out to a 41 point lead,
Starting point is 00:30:24 like, I'm starting to buy it a little bit. I'm starting to buy like this team is going to be in SEC games. Yeah. And it wasn't a fluke last week when they beat the crap out of Minnesota. Like that was like, I know people roll their eyes at some of the lower tier Big Ten like Midwestern old big big 10 West teams when you bring them up. But Minnesota is typically a pretty tough, you know, team to beat. And the way that they threw them around like rag balls last week, I mean, was a pretty big sign that, hey, this team is here here to compete. And, you know, wins Mississippi State's first game against like a really, really good team.
Starting point is 00:30:56 like a team that's like I need to look at their schedule. They play Missouri next week. They're playing. They play Missouri next week in Alabama the week after that. Yeah. Like is it completely out of possibility that there are a 5 and O team going to LSU on October 17th? Because I don't think so. It is not impossible.
Starting point is 00:31:15 It's unlikely, but it is not impossible. And so let's put a pin in that because I'm actually now very excited for Mississippi State, Missouri. Because I feel like that. That allows a nice ramp up into Mississippi State, Alabama, the following week, which is, by the way, in Starkville. It's not in Tuscaloosa. So where does this loss leave South Carolina and Shane Beamer? The fans were captured chanting fire, Fire, Beamer after the game. He's been here before. He was kind of here early season 2024, and then they ripped off a lot of wins. And he ends up saving his job. they give them an extension that they're now probably regretting.
Starting point is 00:31:59 But let's look at where it goes from here. They're in Tuscaloosa next week. After that, Kentucky comes to Columbia. We just saw Kentucky go beat Texas A&M on the road. After that, they're in Gainesville. After that, Tennessee, after that, Oklahoma, like, it's never going to get easier again. Like, the next game where they can maybe take a,
Starting point is 00:32:25 breath is Arkansas. And that's in November. You know, the thing with South Carolina that is probably going to be tough to accept tonight is it's possible that this loss will actually age well. I don't know how well Mississippi State's going to, you know, go into the SEC this year. I have no idea how high their ceiling is like I just mentioned. It's possible that this loss isn't as bad looking in a month as it is today. The fact of the matter is, though, if you're South Carolina, you bring back a bunch of your best players from last year after a very disappointing year.
Starting point is 00:33:03 A year ago in the offseason, they were America's sweetheart as the dark horse to make the playoff after narrowly missing it the previous year, and they fell flat on their faces. Nothing worked. Things were just dysfunctional last year, and of course, that's when all the Shane Beamer hot seat stuff happened. And then you come back, you kind of go through the offseason in relative obscurity, but you still feel like, hey, maybe this team, if things start bouncing their way with the players they had, like Jacarius Peak played on Saturday, the offensive line that they brought in, who Dylan Stewart played for the first time, like you thought, hey, maybe they can beat Mississippi State at home,
Starting point is 00:33:41 start 3 and O and go into the teeth of their SEC schedule, feeling much better about themselves. You know, the Mississippi State aspect of this is part of it. But the other part of it is, is like, we're already starting like this. before we even get to the hardest part of the schedule, we're already doing this. And I feel like that's the most difficult thing. So in terms of whether I anticipate South Carolina has a huge bounce back, I mean,
Starting point is 00:34:04 I don't know if Mississippi State turns out to be awesome. Maybe it's in the tank, but as of right now, I'm not super hopeful for that. Well, and that is why you're getting the reaction for South Carolina people that you're getting, is they assumed this would be a win. They assumed they would beat Mississippi State,
Starting point is 00:34:18 that that would be one of the easy ones. And to lose to them and to lose to them the way they lost, Austin where they do take the lead. They look like they're in control. And then Mississippi State just pounds them from basically half time on. I don't, I don't think they expected that. I think, I think that was shocking to them. Well, I hope that they didn't, they didn't just assume they were going to win this week.
Starting point is 00:34:40 Maybe they assumed it in August when they were playing. Right. If you saw Mississippi State play last week, you knew Camaro Taylor was special. Yeah, like you should have known that this was going to be a tough game. And there's family ties too, right? I think Shane Beamer met his wife in Starkville. And I think Jeff Leby's brother-in-law is Kendall Bryles. So, you know, there's family ties on both sides.
Starting point is 00:35:04 And it wasn't a gimmey game and it never was going to be a gimmey game. And the spread, you know, told you that. But, you know, Jeff Leby is, you know, I read some stats about how terrible they were in SEC play. I can't remember the exact numbers on the top of my head. But it's night and day. what Mississippi State was and what they are now, which is great, good for him. Yeah, and that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:35:27 The shock of this may wear off for South Carolina fans as the season goes on if Mississippi State proves to be very good. But the problem is the next team, South Carolina plays, is good. It's Alabama. Even if they're bad by their standards, which is still good by everybody else's standards, they're still really good.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Kentucky will see, Florida will see, but again, both those programs seem to be on the rise. Tennessee has been good consistently the last few years. Oklahoma, say, you know, we'll get to them. We'll get to the Sooners. Yeah, I don't know about highlighting that game just yet, but we'll tell you why in a minute. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:06 So it's going to be a rough go of it for Shay. He's got to now surprise them by winning when they weren't expecting to win, which would be something like this trip to Tuscaloosa. Now, remember, they went to San Francisco two years ago, probably should have won. They made a lot of them. They played a sloppy game, and Alabama ends up winning. But if Alabama's given up big plays like they were today, it's possible. It's possible.
Starting point is 00:36:35 If Alabama tightens up the defense, it's probably not happening. So, let's stay in the SEC because they're playing a lot of conference games, which makes them interesting. Big Ten, take a note, because you didn't play a lot of interesting games today. Except the one conference game you played was, or one of the conference games you played was very interesting. So in the SEC, Florida goes to Auburn. It is the SEC on SEC debut for John Sumerall and Alex Scholish at their respective new schools. And Florida wins at 4439.
Starting point is 00:37:11 We're going to call this the Jaden ball game. Is that fair? Can we call the Dallas Wilson game too? Or no, no, it's the Jaden ball game. I mean, he was good, too. but I think Jaden Baugh was the reason for to run the damn ball. Is that what they're saying? Run the damn ball.
Starting point is 00:37:27 That is what they say. Yeah. Yeah, he actually held up the sign today on the sideline. Jaden Baugh, 262 yards, three touchdowns, including two long ones. He had a 53-yard run. He had a 35-yard touchdown run. The home run hitter capability is the new thing this year. He was a good back last year.
Starting point is 00:37:47 He has become a great back because he can hit home runs now. I can't stop marveling at how big of a kid he is and how tough he runs through contact and also how shifty he is at the same time. Like anybody who watches him run for five. I'm not an NFL scout. And, you know, my pick sometimes of who the best players in the country are off, as noted earlier in the show, I think Stevie Wonder could point out that this guy's going to have a long NFL career.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Like, I mean, he's a tremendous player. Yeah. And that's why when John Summerall got the job. job. That first day he's in Gainesville, they have the team meeting and he has Jaden boss stand up and he's basically like, I'm going to make sure we keep you. And they did. And this was a big one for them because Summerall had a different roster building strategy than Alex Gulloch did. Alex Gulles brought a lot from USF. And look, that offense played well tonight. like Florida's defense had some problems with Byron Brown.
Starting point is 00:38:51 He threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for 65 yards in a touchdown. Like that's a good Byron Brown stat line. I think if you're Alice Golish and I told you those would be his stats at the end of the game, you'd think, okay, great, we won. Yeah. Yeah, no, that's not what happened though, Andy, because Florida's back. And like, I don't know if you know this, but this is the first time they're three in
Starting point is 00:39:15 since 2019. But, you know, I feel like this was a fun competitive game between two teams that are on the rise a little bit. Like, I mean, I feel like if you're an Auburn fan, you're probably really pissed right now. But don't you just kind of feel at least it was like a palatable loss? I mean, it didn't feel like the Hugh Fries losses to me. Oh, it didn't. They were, they were effective that their defense could have been better, but it may be that
Starting point is 00:39:39 Florida's offense is really good. We don't know. It's interesting because. Buster Faulkner had already been kind of IDed as a future head coach and people were going to want to hire him to get his offense. The fact that he's doing this now in a completely different way they needed at Georgia Tech, and we've talked about this. He started out as a pure air raid guy.
Starting point is 00:40:01 What he did at Georgia Tech was completely different because it was to accentuate the things that Haynes King did best. This looks completely different too. And what you have is Aaron Filo, who has the benefit of some really good receivers. You know, Vernel Brown the third, excellent in space, Dallas Wilson, big athletic target, big red zone target. And then you can hand off to Jaden Ball,
Starting point is 00:40:27 which allows you to throw against more single coverage because you have to pack the box because you're afraid of Jaden Baugh. But Aaron Filo on the road, first SEC start, 15 to 22, 204 yards, 9.3 yards per attempt. He had a touchdown and an interception. So that was a really good start for him. And he's been very efficient all year. He's just, he's not really putting the ball in danger.
Starting point is 00:40:55 He did obviously once tonight. But it just seems like he's got a lot of options. The offense gives him a lot of options, but also Florida's roster gives him a lot of options. Yeah. Andy, I don't want to mess up the flow of the show, but Lane Kiffin said real quick, I have to say. Okay. About Ole Misses Stadium atmosphere, I guess I had to leave to get them to do that. You're welcome. Wow. Wow. We were there when he beat Georgia two years ago. Like, it was pretty good atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:41:39 Yeah. Yeah. I know. know we're talking about Florida. This was the biggest game of the night. And I was waiting to say something. By all means. Yeah. Well, it was pretty loud that night when we were there,
Starting point is 00:41:49 wasn't it? It was very, it stayed in, it rained the whole time and they all stayed and stood and cheered like, all business fans are great. I know they have a reputation of, you know, we've never lost the party and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:42:03 But they have become pretty good savvy football fans as their team has gotten better. So, yeah. Yeah. Now, we can turn this back to the Florida conversation because Ole Miss will leave those great fans and we'll go to the swamp next week, which will be rocking because we know what Florida Field is like or Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Steve Spurrier Field. We know what it's like when Florida is good. And they think Florida is good this year.
Starting point is 00:42:36 They're pretty sure Florida is good. So they are going to be like it is going to sound like a jet engine when Florida comes out of the tunnel next week. And Ole Miss, which by the way, the last time they were in Gainesville essentially got knocked out of the playoff two years ago. Yeah. They are going to have to figure out how to deal with that. And I assume that this will probably be one of the games that we talk about on our Sunday videos, Andy, tomorrow. Yeah. But I'm very on high.
Starting point is 00:43:00 I'm a high alert for Florida's defense giving him with 39 points to Auburn and the hangover effect of laying it out on the line and what happens after playing LSU in the field. That's the thing. If Byron Brown does that to you, what is Trinidad Shambliss going to do to you? Yeah. I mean, Trinidad Chambliss. You're muted, Ari. Trinidad Chamblis might just put up 40 points on everybody this year, and it just might be like you have to deal with it. It doesn't mean you stink and it doesn't mean anything about your team. It's just he's very good. But yeah, if Byron Brown puts up 39 on you, then you know, you better tighten some stuff up before next week. But at the same time, too,
Starting point is 00:43:44 that also could be a game that you look up in the second quarter and Florida's winning like seven to three because Ole Miss is just completely beat from what just happened there. So, you know, we've watched college football long enough to know that there's a variety of things that could happen and almost could be winning 31 and nothing in half time. I don't know what's going to happen.
Starting point is 00:44:00 I obviously suck to think, but. Well, this is very hard to project because you don't know how either side's going to react because both of them, like, listen, Auburn scored at the end to give themselves a chance. They had an onside kick at the end of the game that Florida re-recovered, but they had a chance. So it's not like Florida won easily. So they had to fight for this.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Ole Miss had to fight for this. They're both coming in right and high. The letdown factor probably works both ways in this game. Yeah. You know, and a lot of times, too, when you're soaring high into outer space and you feel like you're flying, you know, and everything is going well, like the crash hurts really hard. So don't get too high, Florida. You know, and it's also not a must win, I don't think. You know, I think that if they play a close competitive game with Ole Miss,
Starting point is 00:44:51 I think the people in Gainesville will be, you know, pleased with that. And, you know, the one thing is for sure is that if you were one of the people in Gainesville or Florida fan in general that was a little bit upset about your inability to lock down Lane Kiffin and who you wound up with, you know, every week that goes by, it's starting to feel more and more like John Summerall is a home run. So, you know, again, only through three weeks. of the season, but Florida should be pretty happy. And I know I love sending you texts about Dallas Wilson and Jaden Baugh. And we haven't really talked about it, but I thought Aaron Finlow
Starting point is 00:45:22 played a really good game. He did. He did. He was very efficient. And again, he's tough. Like, he takes a lot of hits and doesn't seem to be bothered by it. And I think that's probably why they liked him at Georgia Tech and why he was Haynes King's backup for two years is they felt like he had the same kind of ethos as Haynes King. We got a few Florida fans on the chat here and either like, hell no, every game's a must win. Screw that, R.E. We're winning. Like, yeah, I forgot who I'm talking about here. But, you know, they don't
Starting point is 00:45:51 they don't do games you can lose. They don't do. Yeah. You can take this week off. That doesn't work that way. I just have to like write down on my notes. Don't handle any SEC program regardless of
Starting point is 00:46:07 recent results or history or program stature with kid gloves ever. USN, Gator. If you watch the game, you know the refs kept Florida from pulling away. Yes, I know Byron Brown was still in bounds when he got hit. I know. I saw it. And a lot of people text me. But it's okay. They had to fight it out at the end. But they were, it was one of those where they go up two scorers, Auburn would score. So, and kind of reminded me of a little bit of last year's USC Oregon game where Oregon would go up two scores, USC would score. And that is the way I'm going to
Starting point is 00:46:42 transition to USC, which has to play Oregon next week. USC played Rutgers in Piscataway, and oh my God, this was way closer than it should have been. Yeah, I had this kind of highlighted on my notes over here of, you know, I don't remember what the stat was, but USC is pretty terrible in the eastern time zone. And going all the way out to Piscataway the week before playing Oregon in a program defining game probably wasn't the easiest trip. Now, Rutgers is terrible, so, like, that doesn't mean
Starting point is 00:47:17 Jackson. You mess played Rutgers better than USC did. In Rutgers, I watched on Friday night last week when I was in Austin, and they were just awful. So, like, I'm not trying to defend them, but, like, I just knew in my gut that when USC went out there, it wasn't going to be pretty now. You know, let's be honest here, Andy. I don't know if I ever truly thought that Rutgers was going to win, but Rutgers
Starting point is 00:47:39 did have the ball in the fourth quarter down. touchdown. Like it was a game they could have conceivably lost. So, you know, I don't know. You know, the thing with USC for me has always kind of been the same this year, which is, you know, I'm not going to get too high. I'm not going to get too low. But when we get to that Oregon game on September 26th, I'm going to jump to conclusions like I'm in office space. Like so if like this discussion is USC screwed or is USC great, like I don't know. I don't know at all what USC is. but you want to know what's real. We will know definitively if USC is coming to play this year seven days from today.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Yes, correct. Now, what worries you is USC let Rutgers run the ball. And I think that's what kept Rutgers in the game. Rutgers averaged 5.3 yards of carry. If Oregon does that, USC's going to lose next week. And I realize that I'm saying that even though Oregon's defense against Boise State and Oklahoma State let them kind of march up and down the field. But if you let a team run on you like that,
Starting point is 00:48:47 you're going to probably lose if you're playing a team that is as talented as Oregon. But USC ran the ball really well, too. And I think that is the saving grace. And my elbow was fine. Like he had a good game. His stat line was fine. King Miller, I thought, was very good. And I just,
Starting point is 00:49:04 I'm fascinated by USC Oregon because this is, this is the game that we've been pointing to for USC. Are you real? Do you plan to be competitive? Is this going to be the year that you crack the playoff? And they can't do it playing like they play today. But like you said, they're not typically good on the East Coast. They're going to be back home.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Nothing outside of losing to teams like Rutgers is going to define them. Right. No big win. They didn't lose. It's not that. It's not. all that bad. But no win is going to define them too. They've looked really good at other times over overmatched opponents earlier in the year. And that's not going to define them. What is going
Starting point is 00:49:50 to define them is when the team that stole their West Coast swag and stole a lot of their players out of their home state comes into town. And by the way, I don't know what the what the vibes are, but, you know, I know Oregon scored 84 points, 84 on Friday night in a point that went over Portland state, but Oregon's not flying down to LA next weekend, riding high on vibes and awesomeness. They're kind of struggling with some stuff. So, you know, for USC, like, you're not even getting peak Oregon. Now, maybe that loss might fuel them to get better in a way or feel like they need the win the game more. I don't know if there's like a backfire situation there, but it doesn't matter what Oregon is. What matters is what USC is next weekend. And, you know, I am going to draw heavy
Starting point is 00:50:37 conclusions based on that, but I am not buying USC stock or selling USC stock as a result of what happened with Piscataway tonight. Rev. D.J. Escar asked, why are we talking about a third tier big Tim team like USC? We could be talking about two in order Northwestern. Yeah, Northwestern crushed Colorado just dominated. Like it was... Did you see the Colorado entrance into the stadium? I miss that.
Starting point is 00:51:05 Okay. Well, I'm going to use a curse word because there was a curse word in the video, but they were all lined up to run onto the field. And they were laughing, and they said, this place is so quiet. It's like a fucking library. And then they ran out onto the field like laughing. And I think that Northwestern's laughing. And then they got shushed. They got shushed by Northwestern.
Starting point is 00:51:24 Yeah. So, you know, it wasn't the right. They got beat 41 to 7, Ari. And I know. It got beat like it was something. It was just. I mean, Northwestern was just pounding away. They really didn't, like Northwestern didn't really run the ball consistently well.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Aiden Childs had a good game. He threw for 241 yards and three TDs. But it just felt like Colorado couldn't move the ball at all. And it's interesting because Colorado moved the ball really well against Georgia Tech. And like they didn't have that grade of a rushing average against Georgia Tech, but they kept running the ball and kept wearing them down and they kept getting better as the game went on. They never, it never felt like they could get going in this game.
Starting point is 00:52:12 And part of Julian Lewis didn't have a good game, 19 to 29, 168 yards. So they're not doing much down the field with him. But Northwestern absolutely dominated this game. And I say that to say this, Northwestern plays Indiana on Friday. It is the Big Ten opener for both teams. Indiana, scoreless in the first quarter against Western Kentucky. Everybody's a little worried. They go in 38 to nothing.
Starting point is 00:52:42 Yeah. Indiana's a terrible non-conference schedule has kind of kept them in relative obscurity. Like, we haven't really talked about them or really thought about them much because they're just playing bad teams and beating them by a lot. But, you know, I don't know how much, what do you take from this? Is Colorado really bad or is Northwestern maybe sneaky good? Like, I don't know. I guess we'll find out on Friday.
Starting point is 00:53:01 Well, David, listen, since David Braun took over at Northwestern, I think they've been a tough out. So I think there's a chance that they can be competitive against Indiana. But this is also one of those situations where Signetti will, they remember the Illinois game last year? And Illinois comes in and actually, do I remember? Yeah. Looks competitive in the first quarter, early in the first quarter. And then it just becomes a complete thrashing. That is, that's what Indiana might be able to do. But you got Chip Kelly running the offense at Northwestern. And because like the Colorado win was nice. The first win against South Dakota State was nice too. Like South Dakota State is one of the three best FCS programs in the country. So they're not,
Starting point is 00:53:53 like the teams they've beaten, Colorado had beaten Georgia Tech. It doesn't look like Northwestern is just a pushover. Like they're not going to be a pushover. I don't care how good Indiana is. Like, I'm excited about this game. I realize it's on the road Friday night, but Northwestern, if they want to be serious here, this is the kind of game you've got to be competitive in. Like, this is the kind of team you've got to be able to be.
Starting point is 00:54:22 And Northwestern, look, they've got to play quite a few of these teams. So I am excited about that. They have the hardest schedule the Big Ten, maybe. Yeah. They've got Penn State. They've got Oregon. and they've got Iowa, they've got Ohio State. They also have Minnesota and Illinois.
Starting point is 00:54:40 It's not going to be easy. The thing that you have to highlight about their schedule that is easy to miss if you're not paying attention is that they play Indiana, Oregon, and Ohio State all on the road. Yes, yes, that makes it exceptionally brutal. Speaking of the Big Ten and Big Ten conference games, the other Big Ten conference game going on tonight is Purdue at UCLA at the Rose Bowl. It is currently tied at 21 at the two-minute warning of the first half. Tied at 21. Yeah, UCLA was a 14-point favorite. Yeah, we'll keep our eye on that.
Starting point is 00:55:14 We remember Rutgers took Wake Forest to double over time last week. So this one bears watching as well. But can we transition to something that I don't want to wait or didn't want to wait 55 minutes to talk about and have been dying to talk to you about since around 3 p.m.? Absolutely. We have to just talk about CJ Bailey, dude. We do. Okay. How do I tell my children about NC State and CJ Bailey? Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:43 Let us reset the scene in case you didn't see it. I'm sure you saw it because it's one of the craziest endings in college football history. NC State is winning 31 to 28. There are six seconds left on the clock. It is fourth down. NC State is on its own two-yard line. The move here. and every coach will tell you this.
Starting point is 00:56:10 The move here is take a safety. But the way you take the safety is you catch the snap. If you can waste a second or two, that's great. But the key is to get the hell out of the end zone. Get out of the back of the end zone. Pull a Dan Rolofsky. Don't hang around and wait to get hit. C.J. Bailey takes the snap
Starting point is 00:56:33 and starts to move laterally. The attempt is to run the clock out so that you don't have to kick off. You're going to take the safety and you're hoping the clock's at zero so you don't have to kick off to Vanderbilt. Honestly, it's not that bad if you got to kick off because you're going to kick off with like a second left. So if you kick a worm burner at somebody who's not really equipped to return it and it touches them, the clock's going to run out anyway. So that's the question. What are you doing?
Starting point is 00:57:10 What are you doing? I feel bad because I understand what he was trying to do. I think what he was trying to do was to fight off tackles and stay up for an extra second. Yeah, he's trying to run the clock out. But don't run the clock. Do not put the ball in danger. Get it across the back line. give them the two points and kick off and it's over.
Starting point is 00:57:35 You're not going to run the kickoff back on you. So how much do you put on David Dorn here? Is it like weird situation, hard situation? Listen, all of your punters and quarterbacks should be coached. You should have a practice session or two in the off season about taking safeties on purpose. Because I would say every team doesn't run into it every season. but I'd say every couple seasons, every team runs into a situation where you need to take a safety on purpose. Like what he should have said is.
Starting point is 00:58:09 Every punter who has a ball in their own end zone is supposed to kick it out of the back of the end zone. They're not supposed to try to pick it up. And the quarterback should know, should know, because they were coached that way, that the more important thing is take the safety and don't put the ball in danger. the coach has to say run around for as long as you can but the second you think you're going to be contacted either go down or go down the back of the end zone yeah so like the fact of the back of the end zone like pitch it pull it out of the back of the end zone
Starting point is 00:58:44 do whatever you have can to just get it out of the end zone that was just absolutely brutal I mean I there's no way I feel bad for him and I know that you you know have these sayings of there's not one play that determines the game or you know the whole team That play determine the game. That play, like that one play did determine the game. So like, and I know that C.J. Bailey has kind of been off to a heart. I mean, NC State was off to a rough start already this year.
Starting point is 00:59:11 And, you know, he came back and there was a lot of excitement around him, but just a terrible way to start the season. Now conversely. So they got Jared Curtis off the hook because he threw a terrible pick. Like they were, they were going to be able to at least tie the game and go to overtime because they were very much in field goal range. But he threw a terrible pick in the red zone. Yeah, Vanderbilt kept hitting them with the wheel routes in the second half to try to get back in the game.
Starting point is 00:59:35 And I think they went to the well one too many times and threw a pick. But it was like a terrible, terrible, terrible decision from a young freshman making his first start ever. And I don't know about the psychology of a five star who's been in a movie already. But I do think that for as big as a win as that was for Vanderbilt to remain undefeated to move to 3 and O and to go into SEC, play feeling pretty good about the vibes of things. I'm sure that it's probably majorly beneficial to Curtis himself, who doesn't have
Starting point is 01:00:07 to walk off the field and live with the fact that he lost the game for his team the very first time he ever played in it. So, like, Vanderbilt was getting their ass kick for the first half. And he did a really good job of getting them back into the game. I think he throws the ball very well, strong arm, you understand, based on
Starting point is 01:00:23 the tools that he has, why he was rated what he was. But, like, for as brutal of a way as that is was to lose for NC State. And I don't know if you peeped at the NC State message boards, Andy. It was a freaking, it was a, oh, I'm sure it's a blood bath. It was a blood bath. It was a bloodbred.
Starting point is 01:00:39 Yeah. But I also think that conversely, like with Jared Curtis, that also could maybe help Vanderbilt do something. I think that Vanderbilt fans are in this, like, weird thing of like, oh, we won 10 games. I can die happy. But at the same time, looking forward to the future and they're viewing this as kind of a developmental year as Jared Curtis comes along. but, you know, Vanderbilt getting that win over a powerful, you know, non-conference opponent is got to feel pretty good, especially considering, I mean, I don't know if you saw the post game interview. I'm sure you did. You were watching it. But like Clark Lee said, anytime you can learn from losing, I mean, winning, like he thought they, like in his head, like it hadn't even really registered. Yeah, it hadn't occurred to him. It had occurred to him that they actually won the game. So, you know, really, really tough. Obviously, they're going to be going on the road to Auburn next weekend. That's going to be a tough environment.
Starting point is 01:01:28 Auburn's probably pretty pissed off about the fact that they lost their SEC opener to a, you know, team that was in a similar situation. They're going to be mad. I don't know how Vanderbilt's going to fare, but I will say this. I'm happy that the discourse around the game isn't like Jared Curtis blew it. You know, I think that he played a pretty good game and without him they wouldn't have been in it. Well, it's CJ Bailey blew it, though. So somebody has to take that, unfortunately. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:53 Right. He's, he's, I think he's going to be a really good player. I'm excited to see him play, and I thought that he did a lot of good things before making that mistake. But that's what happens when you start a freshman. So you kind of have to live with that. Let us go to the ACC, a game that was pretty high-level offense. I don't know how good the defense was. But every time I looked up, I felt like somebody was streaking down the field for a touchdown.
Starting point is 01:02:20 And that was Louisville and SMU. Big win for Louisville. Like this is one of those. Louisville ones 41-31. there's a chance this game helps determine who plays in the ACC championship game both these teams should be fairly good
Starting point is 01:02:36 to win in the SEC Louisville they have one loss on their schedule it is Ole Miss and it was a track meet that they lost to Ole Miss I don't know how many more track meets they're going to play this season SMU was the team that was equipped
Starting point is 01:02:53 to rope them into that type of game but like that's not the game they'll play against Wake Forest Wake Forest tries to slow down, grind it out. Syracuse, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Northern League. None of these should scare you if you're Louisville. Like, you got to be on guard. You don't want to lose a game that you should win.
Starting point is 01:03:12 But they should be favored in every game until we'll see about Kentucky. I don't know. Just depends. But Lincoln Keenholz, Ari, we talked about this. Holy crap. In the video where we talk about Kentucky, beating Texas A&M. We talked about Kenny Menci and how good he was.
Starting point is 01:03:31 Lincoln Keyholtz, kind of the same boat where he was in a competition with Julian Say and in Ohio State. He didn't win, but it didn't mean he was a bad quarterback. It meant he was not as good as the guy who was a Heisman finalist, his first year as a starter.
Starting point is 01:03:44 Lincoln Keyholtz may someday become a Heisman finalist because this dude is awesome. There's so much to unpack here. I didn't realize how soft Louisville schedule was moving forward. Holy shit. It's pretty, it's pretty bad.
Starting point is 01:03:58 Yeah. Like are they, because obviously playing SMU at home in week three is difficult. Obviously opening with Ole Miss is difficult. But I guess if you would have told me before the season, if they go one in one in those games, they will be in a position to compete for a playoff spot. I would have bought that.
Starting point is 01:04:17 And now, too, with the way that they played against Ole Miss, that aged better today. I mean, Ole Miss might be a top three team in the country. So, man, I didn't, I, just looking at that now, for the first time, I didn't realize how impactful that would be. Now, obviously, Kentucky did some good things.
Starting point is 01:04:33 We had a Texas A&M video. I encourage you guys to go watch that because we reacted to it after it was over with. But, man, they might have punched. I know it's early. I don't want to get clipped and be like, oh, you're an idiot for saying this on September 19th. But it looks like there's a chance that one of the ACC championship game entrances is already spoken for. Well, and we think we know who the other one is, too. We do.
Starting point is 01:05:00 Here's my question, Ari. And I know this is very cart before the horse. And we had a Miami Wake Forest video that came out last night where we talked about that game. I think Wake Forest is probably better than most people think. I think this win will age fairly well, the Miami 33 to 20 win Friday night at Wake. But let's say Louisville runs through the rest of the schedule
Starting point is 01:05:27 and finishes 11 and 1. I'm going to pretend I'm Davo. Did you ever play football? You know, they play 12 games. We could wind up 11 and 1. Well, they actually might wind up 11 and 1. If they wind up 11 and one and they lose to Miami, Ari, they're in the playoff. Probably, yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:45 If they go into the game with a one. That's SMU from two years ago. That essentially makes them SMU from two years ago. Yeah, because SMU only had one loss when they lost to Clemson and the ACCC, right? Correct. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's kind of hard to, I think that there would be a high likelihood of it.
Starting point is 01:06:00 I don't know if it's guaranteed because obviously context of what's around them is going to matter at that point. We don't know how well that's going to be. But, you know, if Jeff Brom does what I think he's capable of doing, and, you know, this is a human being that took Purdue to the Big Ten championship game. Listen, that may be on his on his gravestone because he may win two national titles at Louisville, but it's still going to say took Purdue to the Big Ten championship game. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:28 Well, the one thing I will say is that two weeks ago, I didn't think that Lincoln Keenholz could play at the level that he plays. And then I found myself fantasizing about what somebody whose escapeability is that good and that lethal downfield would do with Ohio State's team around him. And we never got a chance to see it. And I think that one of the criticisms that you can make for Ohio State is that, or what Julian saying specifically is that he hasn't been very good at extending plays when they break down and taking sacks and things. and this is somebody that would take less of them. So obviously, I don't think he's as accurate as good as a passer as Julian, so everybody's got their strengths. But when you think about this guy and the way that he's been able to put up some offensive numbers with,
Starting point is 01:07:09 and Isaac Brown is one of the best running backs in the country. So I don't want to act like he's playing with losers. He's playing with a lot of good players. But just like imagining him with Jeremiah Smith and some of the tools that Ohio State had offensively, we never really got to see it. We only got to see him play one time for Ohio State. It was when the team was completely decimated, completely depleted in the cotton bowl against me.
Starting point is 01:07:27 the zoo and I don't think that's a fair shake. So, you know, I thought it was bull when they said that the quarterback competition before last season with him and Julian Sand was close. I thought that the Kenny Minchie one was bull too. And then you come out and you see both of these guys leading their teams to big week three wins, putting up big numbers. And, you know, the one thing that you can unequivocally say about him is that he's an entertaining person to watch. He was very entertaining in the Ole Miss game too. You just mentioned Isaac Brown, who actually had not been good in their first couple games. He had struggled in the first couple games, didn't he? Well, 10, 10 for 67 yards. That's a good average. Kiwan Brown had the big game today, though. He had 10
Starting point is 01:08:07 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Yeah, he broke off like a 75-yard touchdown run, didn't he? Yeah. So, yeah, they were. Fifty eight was his longest, yeah. Yeah, and it was happening during, like, Clemson, uh, when they came back from the weather delay to, and it kind of got lost in the shuffle of what happened with the C.J. Bailey and stuff, but it was a very entertaining game that I had on the entire time. And, you know, I've had SMU as my sneaky ACC champion, championship game entrant, entrant. Yeah. Not champion. I think Miami's going to win the league. But why would SMU be sneaky? I mean, they made it two years ago. They should have made it last year. If they hadn't lost to Cal, they would have made it. I mean, for odd standpoint, I think they were the
Starting point is 01:08:50 fourth favorite or the fourth highest likely. So maybe not sneaky, but certainly not. the favorite. And I don't know, the ACC can be weird and maybe Louisville will drop a game in the middle of nowhere that you don't see coming. But, you know, that was a tough loss for them. And, you know, they had a chance to win. They just couldn't stop anybody at the end of the game. And that's a tip of the cap to Lincoln and the boys. Do we need to talk about Oklahoma? Our guy Jason Eck did about as well as you could. Like, it would, we thought, they'd make it tough on them.
Starting point is 01:09:28 They made it really tough on it. Oklahoma escapes New Mexico 14 to 6. I went on the sooner scoop show this week with Eddie Radosovich and George Stoya. And they were already aware of this, but I was like, if you guys think that New Mexico is a get right game, I got news for you, pal. It is not. It's a pretty tough opponent, a team that might win its conference this year. And I know Oklahoma has a pretty big game the following weekend too, right?
Starting point is 01:09:56 But Oklahoma plays at Georgia next week. Is that a pretty big game? Listen. Do you think Oklahoma has a chance against Georgia based on what you've seen so far? I don't. No. There's something like very wrong there. I know that Michigan ended up scoring 52 points and beating Utep.
Starting point is 01:10:18 5217. Did you watch any of this? I did. I watched a lot of the first half before Michigan pulled away. And I tweeted this out. And I don't think people got the point of it. But U-TEP lost 51 to nothing to Oklahoma in week one. Oklahoma then goes and scores one entire offensive touchdown against Michigan
Starting point is 01:10:39 and a 17-10 loss. U-TEP had twice as many touchdowns as Oklahoma in the first half against Michigan. Now, again, they end up losing 52 to 17. But that is a damning statistic if you are Ben Arbuckle to Oklahoma offensive coordinator. a damning statistic. Yeah. You know, they won the game. I don't know if you,
Starting point is 01:11:03 this was happening in the heat of the Ole Miss LSU game. But Ecken and the boys had the ball down eight late in the game. So like it wasn't like there was no shot Oklahoma could lose. And, you know, obviously all the alarm bells are ringing in Norman about the offense and Ben Arbuckle and John Matier and you know the talking points. and to come out in the last G6 game of the year and score 14 points and be largely ineffective on offense for the entire game,
Starting point is 01:11:35 I mean, like, they have problems. They've got big problems. I think Ben Arbuckle is in a world of hurt right now. And there were some concepts and stuff. I even saw that Utep was employing against Michigan's defense in the first half and they were scoring with some of the, you know, quick throws and things. And like people were like tagging Ben Arbuckle
Starting point is 01:11:54 on Twitter, like, of like the concept that Utep was using. So I think that people in Norman are very upset and rightfully so because this was supposed to be a much improved offense. And it seems like they're like much worse than they were even last year. And I don't know how we got to that point. Especially because like Rocky Deuters is really good. And Isaiah Satania is really good. I don't know how they can't move the ball.
Starting point is 01:12:14 Well, Satania had the second touchdown like that. That saved him. Yeah. So Mechanic Tech. Isn't New Mexico kind of good? Yes. New Mexico is quite good. And I mean,
Starting point is 01:12:24 based on what we've seen so far, I would put New Mexico as the favorite to win the Mountain West. I don't know if they're going to be the representative in the playoff. I think that's like Boise State probably has a better shot at that because they've beaten Memphis. They're going to play Western Michigan. They could have better wins. And we'll see who wins the American. But Jason Eck is going to be a coach that multiple power four teams are going to look at for their job openings. if his alma mater, Wisconsin opens,
Starting point is 01:12:55 I think there's certainly a chance that he has a shot there. If something happens at Colorado, his former AD Fernandovo is there. The AD who hired him in New Mexico is at Colorado now. So absolutely he will get looks. And not just from those two schools. I'm of the opinion he can win anywhere. Like it doesn't matter part of the country,
Starting point is 01:13:16 any of that stuff. Conference doesn't really matter. I think he can win anywhere. And I think I think ADs know that too. I think he will be a popular name in the coaching carousel. Yeah. And, you know, I think that he's also kind of following the similar, you know, when at smaller schools path that is going to be in vogue this coming cycle.
Starting point is 01:13:33 So, you know, congrats to him. We had Jason Eck on the show. We love the guy. He's really good at his job. And we knew he would be really good at his job. And we knew that New Mexico would be pretty good this year. I knew that this was going to be a really tough game for them. And it turned out to be, you know,
Starting point is 01:13:46 but there's no amount of warnings that you can give the Oklahoma fans about how, how tough New Mexico is going to be or, you know, how much of a trap game this could end up being with Georgia on the schedule next week. And then that can like help them work through this final score that you're looking at here. So, you know, this is not good enough. Their, their offense is bad. And I don't know how much of this is fixable. All right, we do have to talk briefly about Ohio State and Kent State. Not really because of anything happen or of the game itself.
Starting point is 01:14:18 Ohio State clobbered Kent State. Jeremiah Smith became the leading receiver in Ohio State history in game three of his junior season. Think about all the receivers who've come through Ohio State. That is incredible. I can name a few if you want me to. Go ahead, please. I'm not going to just do the ones that are in the NFL in the last three years. But like think about some of the guys that have come through.
Starting point is 01:14:45 We can go back to Chris Carter, Michael Jenkins. Like, keep going. Terry Glenn, but Emeka Ibuka, Michael Jenkins, Chris Alave, David Boston, Marvin Harrison, Jr., Devin Smith, who was the underrated most valuable player of the 2014 National Championship team. Chris Carter, Antonio Holmes, Garrett Wilson, Severe Posey, Tedgin Jr., Carnell Tate, Brian Robiskey, Kenyon Rambo, Paris Campbell, Jackson Smith and Jigba, Michael Thomas, Terry Glenn, Brian Hartline, Anthony Gonzalez, Terry McLaren, Curtis Samuel, Reggie Germany, Johnny Dixon, they have 50 receivers that are at least somewhat recognizable to the general public. Yeah, the fact that he was able to do this. Obviously, he did it quickly because not a lot of people are as productive as he was in his freshman year.
Starting point is 01:15:33 And he got to play extra games like he played in the 12th team playoff as a freshman, yeah. But you know, you can cancel a lot of those games out because he only played a half of a lot of them too when Ohio State was winning by 100. So, like, you know, I don't know, you know, this guy is really special. I think it's cool that you isolated that as a thing to talk about. And he is going to be handsomely rewarded for all of this. He already is, very rich man, but he will be richer here when the first round of the NFL draft comes because he is, I just, like, Devante Smith was really, really good, right? Like, there were a lot of really good receivers.
Starting point is 01:16:12 I just don't know if I've seen one. that's quite like this from a prospect standpoint. I think Donvante Smith, you can make the case, was more electric in college. I think Percy Harvin was more electric in college, but when you think about size and speed and strength and mechanics and tools, in terms of like what would be the prototypical NFL prospect, I don't know if I've seen,
Starting point is 01:16:33 and what's the comp on this guy, Julio Jones? Julio Jones is the most common common common. And I think that's the part with Jeremiah that's different. Like, DeMonte Smith has become a good receiver in the NFL. but he doesn't dominate the NFL like he does in college. I suspect that at some point in his career, Jeremiah Smith will be the best receiver in the NFL. And I don't think that's going to take that long.
Starting point is 01:16:57 I mean, we could be talking about somebody who is viewed when he's done as one of the five best receivers to ever play. And I think that, you know, if you look back, I know a lot of people get hyped up during recruitments. I know a lot of people get hyped up at the beginning of their careers. But if you go and you look at the way that recruiting people analyzed his tape when he was in high school and the way that NFL people analyze his tape right now, I was sitting next to our buddy Brooks Austin at the Ohio State Austin or Texas game in Austin last week. And he said he was the film guy, one of the most complete prospects he's ever seen in any position. And like you hear quotes like that all the time from people that are just draft analysts who have no skin in the game.
Starting point is 01:17:39 he is universally regarded as one of the most complete and can't miss prospects at any position in NFL craft history. So we'll see where he goes. I'm very curious to see how Ohio State does this year. I think that they've got some question marks, especially on the lines. But in terms of how good he is, I can't say enough about the guy.
Starting point is 01:17:58 And I'd be happy to say that I said some hyperbolic things about him when he was a freshman on this show that are turning out to be not so stupid now. Yeah. No, I think there is very little hyperbole when it comes to him because he's that incredible. One more I want to talk about, and that's Notre Dame. They beat Michigan State 2710. CJ Carr is fine.
Starting point is 01:18:17 Defense is fine. Ari, would you care to hazard a guess at Notre Dame's rushing average on the season? Well, now I've got to guess low because you're asking me, is it 70 yards? No, per carry. Oh, 3.6. That is exactly what it is. Are you kidding me? That's exactly what it.
Starting point is 01:18:41 it is. And I know what you're thinking. Sacks get included in the rushing stats in college, so that that must be dragging it down. No, CJ Carr, two carries for negative six yards. He's not getting sacked. Like, that's not the problem. They're just not running the ball very well. Everything else is fine. This is not an issue against their schedule because they can still go 10 and 2 or 11 and 1 running them all. though I don't think they'd beat Miami if they can't run the ball very well. But if they want to win the national title, which seems to be their goal, that has to get better. And do you like watching the NFL, right?
Starting point is 01:19:21 I do. Have you seen Judarian Price run the ball for the Seahawks? I sure have. Sure have. I know that Jeremiah Love is the guy, and I know that he's an alien and can't say enough nice things about him. Judarian Price is awesome. Yeah, he got drafted to a lot better team.
Starting point is 01:19:40 team than Jeremy. I loved it. God, but he was the second back. The point you're trying to make is they were loaded in the backfield last year. Absolutely loaded. My takeaway for Notre Dame is this. We spent the entire offseason discussing what happened at the end of last year with the playoff and Marcus Freeman and his NFL had coaching candidacy and how this team was going
Starting point is 01:20:05 to play pissed off and punish people, make them rue the day that they had to step on the same field as Notre Dame this year as a result of what happened last year. And they have won and they've won comfortably. Notre Dame hasn't imposed its will on anybody yet. They haven't been punishing people the way that I thought that they would. And I don't know if that means that, hey, maybe they're not that great or if they're just kind of working through some stuff. But the vibes that I'm getting from Rotter Dame in terms of the results and what I'm seeing when I'm watching on TV does not match the expectation. So, you know, it's very, very, early and things will change and I know that they're going to win 52 to 10 against a few teams on
Starting point is 01:20:45 their schedule but here's the thing Andy I don't know if you've been paying attention to BYU my friend yeah that's what I was saying you you got a problem in Provo if you can't run the ball yeah they they don't they don't play USC this year but they play BYU in Provo and if you can't run the ball BYU could eat your lunch so you know I'm not gonna do any like sound the alarm they're going to miss the playoff discussion right now i think it's too early for that but you know based on what my expectations were and what i've seen i would be lying to you if i said that notre dame has reached those expectations so very curious to see where they go from here yeah one one more one more uh yeah just keep going not did not seem stressed at
Starting point is 01:21:32 all georgia went into arkansas and just rolled 4517 there was some garbage timery that went on here But this was, Georgia's offense looks very capable. It does not look, you know, it doesn't look stilted. It never looks stuck in mud. Like, this is a, this is a very good offense. And we're going to see against a great defense next week against Oklahoma. Like, we don't trust Oklahoma's offense at all. We made that very clear.
Starting point is 01:22:06 But I think Oklahoma has a very good defense. So if Georgia can move the ball up and down the field in Oklahoma's defense, they can do that against anybody. So I'm excited to see what Gunner Stockton and the boys do against them. The Arkansas thing is sad. Like I like Ryan Silverfield. You and I have had him on the show. Yeah, great guy. I think he got put in a pretty ridiculous situation because the Arkansas board announced this week that they're going to have a review basically of what.
Starting point is 01:22:38 What is going on with fundraising and funding of football and why are they not setting up football for success at Arkansas? Was that good news for Ryan Silverfield? Like, when you look at that and go, this is going to be good? I think so. Because that is like, and if you read the discourse from the Arkansas fans, because people, like, Scott Van Pelt was asking, like, why are you, why are you bailing on this guy after two games? And they're saying, we're not bailing on him. were mad at Hunter Eurochak, the athletic director, for putting him in this situation.
Starting point is 01:23:12 That's what I wondered. Like, would it have mattered who they had hired? I feel like everybody they would have hired would have been in this situation. Like Alex Gollish was going to go there. When Summerall was going to go to Auburn, Golish was going to go to Arkansas. It would have been the same for him, too.
Starting point is 01:23:32 Yeah. You saw the paper bags, right? I did. I did. Yeah, I was just curious about that because I saw the news about that. Was that Friday yesterday? Yes. And I wasn't quite sure what that actually meant. So if they're like doing an investigation into why the NIL fundraising is awful.
Starting point is 01:23:52 That's what it sounds like to me. It sounds like we're going to get the root of the problem. We're going to root out the problem, which would make me fairly nervous if I were the athletic director because, well, who else are they going to pin that on? Yeah. I'm Googling something right now because I don't know the answer to this. You're a little PAC 12 after dark going on because the PAC 12 is now a viable league again. Boise State, member of the PAC 12, playing South Dakota, not South Dakota State, not the Jack rabbits. They're playing the coyotes.
Starting point is 01:24:30 2424, 722 to go in the fourth quarter. Now, Boise State's in the red zone. but keep an eye on this one because if Boise State loses to an FCS team, they ain't making the playoff, even if they win the Pact 12. Interesting. So, okay, everybody,
Starting point is 01:24:55 they're at the South Dakota 14 in a tie game with seven minutes left. So we'll see if they're at the two. Okay, now they're at the two. So we'll still see what happens. Ari, we got to congratulate James Franklin for once again beating the team that he was supposed to be the head coach of, and then they ditched him after they fired Ralph Rijian. Virginia Tech beats Maryland. James Franklin now 3-0 at Virginia Tech. All the bad blood between the two seemed to get drummed up a lot this week when I don't even remember hearing about the bad blood at all when he was at Penn State.
Starting point is 01:25:34 I don't know why that happened. I remember when he ran up the score on them at Penn State. I know, but why is this, why did it like resurface into a big deal this week? Because he was playing Maryland. No, I know, but it's not like the first time he's played Maryland in the 15 years since that happened. No, but it's because he hates Maryland. That didn't happen. But that, the running up the score didn't happen 15 years ago.
Starting point is 01:25:54 It happened a lot more recently than that. Yeah, yeah. So, 3 and 0 for Franklin and Virginia Tech. What else you got? Congratulations to Kenny Dillingham and the Arizona State Sun Devils for going to England and coming back with a win. They're going to do something. some sightseeing, too. Well, have you ever seen that clip of Bill Burr walking around London saying, you know, I understand why Gordon Ramsey's so mad all the time. All this food sucks. Great pubs. Food is terrible. Yeah. The fish and chips are, legitimately awesome. Like the fried fish with vinegar on it is awesome. You can't beat that. But yeah,
Starting point is 01:26:49 the rest of it is I can do it out. Boise State touchdown. So they're not one yet. But have not one yet, correct. It's not over yet. But they have scored. So Ari,
