Andy & Ari On3 - Texas at Tennessee INSTANT REACTION: Longhorns, Arch Manning ESCAPE Volunteers, Faizon Brandon

Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to an instant reaction edition of Andy on Ari on 3 presented by Polly Market. And Texas won or Tennessee covered. What are we excited about here, Ari? That was a very exciting finish to a game that was pretty much a slog unless you were a fan of quarterbacks getting their heads caved in. Yeah, you know, I think that my toxic trait, Andy, over the years I'm trying to fix is that a lot of the time my takeaway from winning teams is negative and I want to be positive. Okay. I don't want this live to just be about sloggy offense

Starting point is 00:00:37 and whether either team is good enough, particularly Texas to win the championship. Can we talk about the fact that Colin Simmons who got penalized for a fake hog reveal in the middle of the game, had five sacks and was one, he had 11 minutes to tie the NCAA record for most sacks in a game, which is six. I understand that that was like the funny

Starting point is 00:00:56 like hallmark moment of a kind of a strange game. But, you know, for all the talk that we have, and we're going to have plenty of time throughout the week to talk about Texas's offense, Arch Manning, all the things that I think that you'll see on Texas message boards. This was a pretty trendy pick for upset alert, going to Neeland on Saturday, a fired-up stadium, one of the most imposing situations in all of college football, and they got a win, and their defense is remarkably good. Now, I don't know, again, where Faison Brandon is or where Tennessee is. I don't know if they're going to be scoring 40 points a game on anyone else.

Starting point is 00:01:30 but my takeaway from the game is Texas is 4-0. They are in a position to potentially, you know, make the playoff and go on a run to the national championship, and they won a tough game on the road in the SEC. So, you know, I don't want to delve into negativity. I don't want to focus on the fact that, you know, I think that there needs to be a conversation, and maybe we'll have it in the middle of the week about whether Steve Sarkesian should be calling plays for this team. they spent a lot of money in the offseason on guys like Cam Coleman and, you know, they're running back duo.

Starting point is 00:02:03 And I don't know if that's good enough offensively. But again, they won. They beat Tennessee on the road. And their defense is awesome. And they've got the best individual defensive player in the country. Yes to all. I mean, Littermore may have a bone to pick with you about that. But that I'll take all of that.

Starting point is 00:02:21 And look, this is a game Texas would have lost last year. So I think that's the part you take away that you're happy with. There's obviously stuff you can improve, but you'll take that. I mean, for Tennessee, your defense is pretty awesome too. Like, Texas has a bunch of playmakers on that team, and you held them in check most of the game. Phazon Brandon, I was going to ask you this, sorry, did Faison Brandon right now remind you a little bit of Arch Manning

Starting point is 00:02:50 in games like this at this point last year? Like, I'm sitting in the swamp right now. Florida and Ole Miss about to kick off. When Arch was here last year, that's kind of how he looked where he's just taking stack after sack after sack and he sort of snapped out of it as the year went on Phazon Brandon had never seen a defense like that

Starting point is 00:03:08 I suspect he will be better going forward after this experience but that was I mean that's what lost in the game but also he kind of kept them in it with that last touchdown drive so it's not like it's a lost cause I don't view that as like Phazon I thought that Phazon looked very

Starting point is 00:03:27 like he belonged. I don't know how to say. He's going to be fine. Yeah. I mean, is that the way to say? My takeaway is, my takeaway is Texas has a top five pick at defensive end who took the game over. So, you know, I know that it's going to be a long road, you know, maybe for Tennessee this year. But I also think that at this time next year, they might be in a position to be very good if Faison Brandon continues his development.

Starting point is 00:03:55 So, you know, I think that. you know, more so than anything. And I saw somebody on the Texas beat, tweet this in the middle of the game, which is Texas has a national championship caliber defense, but might have a four-loss offense. And that's kind of confusing because of all the good players that they have. Like Archmanning, you know, had a few really nice throws in the first half, but their offense for the most part in the second half was completely, you know, stifled.

Starting point is 00:04:20 And maybe that's a testament to Tennessee's defense. Obviously, Jim Noles is a very accomplished and very good defensive coordinator and things are working there. But, you know, I think that my takeaway overall in this game is Texas has an amazing defense. They should never apologize for winning a game where there are five and a half point favorite on the road. In a very sneaky upset environment, they might have the best collection of two wins in the entire country. They're certainly going to be number one heading into next week. And they won a game, as you put it, that they probably would have lost last year.

Starting point is 00:04:48 So, you know, it's not time to be overly critical. But, you know, I think that there will be a time maybe down the line where they end up getting clipped in the SEC. because I don't think anyone's going undefeated. But the thing is they won this one. They won this one. They have the Ohio State chip in their pocket, which is the biggest chip in the country right now. Big chip.

Starting point is 00:05:07 That Ohio State win is enormous. The whole outlook is completely different if they're sitting here at 3 and 1 versus 4 and 0. So I'm looking at the rest of their schedule. We'll see Florida and Ole Miss are playing right now. They've got to play them. Mississippi State does not look easy with Camaro Taylor. You've got to go to LSU.

Starting point is 00:05:26 you got to go to Texas A&M. So nothing's set in stone. Like this offense has to get better for them to get where they want to go. But we also might find out that Tennessee's defense is just excellent. I mean, is that a possibility? Of course it is. I mean, we saw Texas mount three drives against Ohio State's defense in the fourth quarter of 12 players or more to erase a 20-point deficit. So to sit here and pretend like Texas's offense can't figure it out, they certainly have the personnel to figure it out.

Starting point is 00:05:56 So, you know, maybe that was just a tough environment in a slog of a game. And I think that that's, you know what is kind of funny about discourse and college football, Andy, is that you and I will make predictions and have a discussion about a game on Monday. And everybody kind of echoes those thoughts of like, this is going to be a tough game for Texas to win. Yeah. And then it happens and it's ugly. And then the takeaway is they suck.

Starting point is 00:06:16 And it's just like, no, it just played out exactly. Yeah. What this played out exactly the way that the markets predicted it. I mean, we looked at Polymarket on Sunday. last week. And we played guess the spread. And it wound up. I think it started at five and a half, then dropped to four and a half. And look, that's the game you got. Like, you got exactly what the world thought it was going to get. And I mean, you didn't because I think you picked Texas to cover, but I picked Tennessee to cover. So real American dollars on polymarket and a lot of them.

Starting point is 00:06:51 Are you unit shaming me already? That's okay. I understand that. I'm not unit shaming you. I'm telling you I'm depressed about it because, you know, and you know what, I guess it's a small price to pay for River to have some sort of, you know, diamond in the rough, a positive outlook type deal. Can we just have him pop up here, Randy, just for a second to tell us how he's feeling. Look at him. He looks like he's about to cry. What's up, guys? Yeah, we'll be fine. We'll be fine. I mean, it's an 18-year-old's first big test, and against that defense, offensive line was in hell. I don't know, man. It's just tough.

Starting point is 00:07:22 I took many of you watching the end of the game. And what was it like? Kind of depressing because it wasn't it wasn't the volcanic reaction that that you're hoping for. But it was I think River at that point at seed phase on Brandon get sacked enough times to just be. Yeah. Yeah. Basically numb to the idea that phase on brand was going to climb in the pocket and somebody was going to just clobbering. Yeah. A lot of clock management issues into the first half.

Starting point is 00:07:50 You weren't that aggressive. Second half like into the fourth quarter. I don't know. you had to spend the time out so you do the two minute drill with no timeout so it's just tough spot for the kid he'll be fine balls will be fine he's an 18 year old against one of the best defenses in the country yeah but reine byles for texas by the way real deal real deal yeah well i mean i just think that you're too nice and mild mannered to be a real ball sometimes yeah we had no past game we had no past game no run game be irrational don't be rational

Starting point is 00:08:21 Like I think your takes are rational. Be irrational. Tell me how you feel in your heart. We were knocking on overtime's door, Ari. We were knocking on the door for overtime. We were right there. And that was the ball in it is. Yeah,

Starting point is 00:08:33 we should have tied the game. We had the ball and plus there. All we had to do. With a minute and a half left of the game, just go get into the overtime. That's what I'm hoping for. That's all we needed was overtime's door. We just needed to get in physical range.

Starting point is 00:08:45 We couldn't even do that. So it's okay. But we five. I don't know. He says his. It sounds like tears are coming, like tears are welling up behind the eyes. Andy and River, that also was the single most impressive defensive possession that Texas had on the entire game because in that position on the road, giving up an onside kick, your backs are against the wall.

Starting point is 00:09:04 They're in plus territory. They're knocking on the field goal range and you slam the door shut. Now, I know they almost gave it back with that crazy face mask because they had Tennessee all the way back in their own territory. They gave them too many gifts for Tennessee not to capitalize on it. I think that's a testament for how good defense. The Texas penalties also, that's got to get cleaned up. Texas is going to have games where it can't survive that many penalties. So that's the-

Starting point is 00:09:27 Sorry, Sarke said at the end of his first half. And I'll say it again, Texas gave them plenty of chances to win the game. Texas was wanting to hand them that game. Penalties were just brutal. And, of course, Colin Simmons' celebration was. But show them your really nice rowback, hez-y hoodie, though, real quick. That's a good-looking hoodie right there. it is, but it'll be a longhorn hoodie on Monday.

Starting point is 00:09:51 Yeah, I shouldn't. I can't mail it to you in time. I'm just saying, I'm going to have to wear it, but, yeah, man, this is, this is going to be a fun season, though, because I do think this is what you're going to get. You're going to get games like this when teams have to go on the road. When good teams go on the road, they're going to have to play tight games. There are going to be mistakes that they're going to have to overcome. And that's what Texas was doing is, is they overcame enough mistakes to win because they made a lot of mistakes. But Ari, Colin Simmons was absolutely dominant. Anytime he got left one-on-one, he was getting home.

Starting point is 00:10:28 Yeah, you know, you've got Florida here at the 12-yard line trying to go in for a touchdown opening drive. I know you have to go in a minute, but I will say, I know that this is an offensive Heisman situation, but like when you think about a defensive player, like, that was a Heisman performance. I don't know how far a defensive player will ever get in it. but like the guy was everywhere the entire game and I can overlook the hog reveal I can overlook it I don't know if you can I was not I was not particularly offended by it in the first place uh yeah what what was he doing there

Starting point is 00:10:57 oh oh oh oh yeah oh yeah oh I think I think it was also like the the zipper simulation that was the most offensive part um and I'll tell you that I don't know since this is our channel and like we're uh in the trust tree with the people who watch our show every day Andy I'll tell you I've you're it a lot of my life that is not the experience that I'm I typically deal with. So good for him. Well, we will talk to you after Florida Ole Miss. We'll also talk to you again at the end of the night because we have a lot to wrap up.

Starting point is 00:11:24 There's a couple games in that early window that we really need to dig into tonight. Ohio State, Illinois, Ohio State wins. Jeremiah Smith, speaking of Heisman performances, we have to talk about that. The idea that Ohio State has figured out how often they need to press the Jeremiah Smith button because the defense don't know. Also, Wake Forest goes on the road and beats Louisville. Name me another team, Ari, that has two power four road wins this season. Mississippi State. That's the only other one I can think of.

Starting point is 00:11:57 We're going to have a packed show tonight. I can't wait. I'm looking forward to it. Wish me luck traversing L.A. traffic. I'm going to file a quick Colin Simmons column.
