Welcome to Andy Norion 3, presented by Polymarket. And that is Camario Taylor in a Mississippi State uniform. And it seems like people think he might not be in a Mississippi state uniform after this season. And there was a viral tweet that went out on Monday. And it just got me. And I was thinking about it. Our friend Bruce Feldman at The Athletic, He quoted a nameless Big Ten coach who'd been watching Camaro Taylor's film, probably,

was probably watching Minnesota film and watched Camaro Taylor carve him up. But that coach said, you know, we think he's going to be playing for the hurricanes next year. He'll look great playing for the hurricanes next year. We don't have to do that. Ari and I got a little perturbed seeing that. So we decided we would have a discussion about why Camario Taylor charged. chose Ole Miss, the situation, I think a lot of people are not quite understanding about how they landed him, why he picked it, where he's at in his career, and just what will happen if he is as good as we think he might be. And again, we don't know that yet. He's been great so far, incredible against Minnesota, great against South Carolina.

the way he's been playing is the reason Mississippi State is favored by almost a touchdown against Missouri this weekend. He's changing the program. But remember, that was his goal from the start. So let's talk Camaro Taylor, what happens now and what happens next. Ari, I don't want to pick on our friend Bruce Feldman because he's just reporting what everyone is saying. But I was reading this last week, and this is before Camaro. Taylor blew up against South Carolina, which everybody saw me against Minnesota too. But we've all been watching. And, you know, if you watch this show regularly, Cody Belair told you over the

summer that Camaro Taylor is one of the people he was most excited to see playing this season. It's not like this guy was a secret. But the discourse around him, because he's at Mississippi State, I think, is become a little bit, you know, I don't normally criticize where the game is, like it is what it is. But I don't like the fact that we're just assuming things now about guys that presumably pick their school fairly carefully. So here's what Bruce wrote. This is talking to a coach who had watched Camaro Taylor. So this is, This is probably right after the Minnesota game. This is a Big Ten coach watching the Minnesota film.

He is the best QB I've seen in college football in a few years, said a big ten coach this week. This is Bruce to Bruce Feldman at the athletic. His film is absurd. His arm talent is close to the freakyest I've seen from a college kid. It's Joe Milton, but with accuracy and shot selection. He's impressively mobile for being 6-4-2-30. He's got field vision. He operates from a muddy pocket often with lots of success.

All these things are great. and then the guy says he's going to look awesome in a hurricanes uniform next year. And Ari, that is outside of the Mississippi State fan base. It feels like that's what we're getting. He, you know, has a great gaming at South Carolina. It's like, okay, but who's going to buy him off Mississippi State's roster next year? Yeah. You know, I'm just reading tweets all weekend of similar, you know,

I was in the gym working out earlier on the week and somebody goes, man, that Taylor gets good. I can't wait to see where he goes next year. And it's just kind of like twofold. Let's just start with the fan version of it, which is can't just Mississippi State enjoy having one of the best players in the country? I mean, like if you're a fan, and I'm assuming that, and I don't know what the podcast breakdown is for us, Andy,

of fans who root for traditionally large, rich, powerful, big brands. Maybe most of the people who listen to the show do. But I know that we have a lot of people who root for Syracuse in Michigan State. and, you know, Oklahoma State. And Mississippi State, yeah, Mississippi State, that listen to the show every single day because they are passionate about their teams. And I think the coolest thing about the new era of college football,

as I currently engage in Twitter fights with people about how good of an Ole Miss job, or Ole Miss job is in comparison to LSU, that, you know, the beauty is that we can get to a place where atypical teams or teams that we're used to seeing something from can do something different, you know, and I hate saying this now because it's just like a complete cliche and we've said it 100 times. Indiana won the national title.

Okay. Indiana had players on its team the year before that were really good. Indiana returned a lot of really good players from its team the year before and won the national championship because they stayed there. So, you know, I don't know like on the back of my hand or right on a back of a notebook paper like what misses. Mississippi State's doing from a financial standpoint. But this isn't a Trinidad Chambleau situation. They didn't just find somebody that they have no idea about and then like ran ass backwards into a treasure trust and won't be able to afford them.

I'm assuming that given the fact that let's let's give people the history. Yeah. So he is the the nephew of Omar Connor, former Mississippi State starting quarterback in the early 2000s. He is not a guy that he's not like. a Dak Prescott, Diamond Heather Ruff, who was under-recruited. He was a high four-star quarterback. He was an elite 11 finalist.

Like, everybody knew about this guy. Everybody. He's from Mississippi. He wanted to go to Mississippi State. He was committed to Mississippi State probably at a time when most people would have abandoned their commitment to Mississippi State. You know, when he was a high school senior, Mississippi State went two. and 10. He was at every

home game, every one trying to lead the recruitment of other people. So there's, that's where I feel like there's some misconceptions here. I think the assumption is that they just they found somebody by accident because of

Mississippi State. Let's say what it did. Jeff Leby recruited this guy. He liked Jeff Levy and wanted to play for Jeff Levy and more specifically wanted to play for Mississippi State. The Mississippi State collective made a documentary a little bit ago. And his mom, actually, Camaro Taylor's mom, was talking about why he's there. I knew, I knew deep down inside he wanted to go to states.

We were staying with my mom. And he was in the room on the floor playing the game. And I walked by the door. And he said, hey, mom. And I begged up. And I said, yeah, what's up? He was like, I truly believe I can help change the program around this state. I said, do you truly believe it? And he was like, yes, ma'am, I do. And I said, do you truly? He said, I do. I said, have you prayed? He said, I have.

I said, well, God told you. He said, God told me to go to Mississippi State. So I said, well, God told you to go to Mississippi State, don't let me your dad and nobody else change your mind. When we did come to stay on a visit, he was so happy. He was like a kid in the candy store when we get on that campus. So his dad walked over to me, we was in the little thing eating. And he said, Quina, I said, huh?

He said, man, my baby, little bit up here. Look here, he's so heavy. He had this glow about him, about state. And he was trying to get up to every practice, every game. So, and I wasn't bringing him. He was found him away, but he was getting there. It didn't even fade him like people sending an office. You know, it was like, okay, I got 20 to 30 offers. That didn't bother him because he had already in his mind. State is where I'm going. So I think God truly put him in. I mean, so I know you're probably watching that with the state. cynical eye and saying, okay, but what if Ohio State or Miami offers him $8 million bucks next year? Here's the other part of that. It's not like Mississippi State's not paying him now, and it's not like Mississippi States going to cheap out on him next year.

Like, if he's really good this year, if he keeps playing the way he has been, they are going to have to figure out how to pay for it. My guess is that will be priority one. Yeah. And it's, you know, we're in September right now as we're talking about this. and we don't know how good Mississippi State's going to be this year. We don't know how far they're going to go. But given the fact that this kid is already sensational enough to give him this much attention,

Andy, we didn't talk about Mississippi State for prolonged segments last year, right? I think that obviously we know how much power there is in the quarterback position. We know how much power there is in being a good football team, especially at a place like Mississippi State. Now, I know that Mississippi State hasn't been the most successful SEC program, I've never been to Starkville. You can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that they care a lot about football there.

They very much do. You know, being a competitive SEC team. Now, Andy, too, also, if you want to go look at his recruiting profile, we're talking about a fringe top 100 player. He had offers out of high school from A&M and Georgia and some other big time places. Yeah. It's not like they found this kid from Ferris State and brought him in

and they're like, holy crap, what do we find here? It's a guy that has ties to the state. It's a guy who has family members who played for this exact team, and I buy that. Now, the last thing I want to say, too, about it, before I let you speak, is I think that because we are in a time in college football where it is very transactional and that NIL rules the world and people leave places for other places and there's so much about money and lawsuits and all these different things that you and I speak about in June, that we have. lost the sense that there are also really nice stories of kids who feel connections to places for reasons outside of money. Now, I don't know if I think that there's anything that can be done if there's a circumstance where a traditional blue blood sees this armed talent offers him three times as much money as he's making it Mississippi State. Sometimes loyalty falls to the wayside

because people have to do what they what they perceive as best for their family and themselves financially. and I don't and I understand that but is it possible that this kid loves Mississippi State and his calling and the thing that he's passionate about the most is being the the leader of the program that when it turns around and if Mississippi State can get anywhere near what Miami or Ohio State or anyone else can get through that like his life's mission his goal his passion as a human being given what we just watched in that video would be to stay so like I'm not here to say that he's not leaving you know you guys know my my prediction history, I'm not very good at it. But what I do know is that if we are in September, then they're 3 and O, and he's lasering the ball all over the field. And, you know, Mississippi State looks like a team.

I mean, they're favored by six and a half against Missouri this weekend. Which two weeks ago, nobody would have thought that possible. It's like, can't, can you just like shut the hell up and let these people enjoy this? Well,

like, there's another scenario. There's another scenario that I've heard, too, is like, oh, Jeff Leby's going to try to get another job and bring him with. Okay. well, let's play that out. Let's game out that scenario. If you're going to be in a situation where Jeff Levy is being offered a very good job, and it would have to be a very good job. It would have to be better than Mississippi State

for him to want to leave Mississippi State. Okay, he's probably got to win like eight or nine games this season. Well, if you win eight or nine games at Mississippi State, and you have a quarterback who's special enough to get you to that point, by the way, the schedule's brutal. Missouri, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, those their next five games. Brutal schedule. Let's say they win eight or nine games against this brutal schedule. And let's say Camaro Taylor is the main reason why they are doing it.

Are you going to risk leaving with the idea that he may or may not come? Because if he truly feels like it's a special place and he can raise the level of the whole program, he might stay. He might not go with you. Okay. this sounds like a fat story, but there was a

court. Is there another example of this, Andy? There was a quarterback at a school in Mississippi, and his coach went to

LSU and thought the quarterback was going to come, and then he didn't. And then kicked his ass on. And the quarterback from Mississippi won. You know, Mississippi's got the two best

quarterbacks maybe in college football this year. That's really fun to say out loud. You know, here's the other thing, too. I don't know if there's arrogance on my

part at play here. Doesn't anybody just want to be a legend anymore? That's maybe where he's at, though. Like, listen to his mom. That's what it sounds like. I'm just like, I understand that money is powerful. And listen, I covered Ohio State. And I know that we're using them in this weird hypothetical. I understand. Let's do Miami because they're the ones it's always, it's always, it's always.

Okay, it's always Miami. But like, I wanted to do, I wanted to do Ohio State because I wanted to make a point about Jeremiah Smith. Yeah, yeah. So the reason why I'm doing Ohio State, and we can be Miami too because they have a long history. But let's just stick with Ohio State because I have this one already in the holster. But Jeremiah Smith is a South Florida kid who went to Ohio State, and he might be the best player in college football right now, without question, right? If you weren't paying attention on Saturday, they ISO'd him.

Look at that podcast talk. They put the camera on him in the middle of the first quarter of the Kent State game because he became the all-time leading receiver in Ohio State history. Okay. He is approaching 3,000 career yards. He has led Ohio State to a national championship. He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players that are played in Columbus. That said, here's a nice list of receivers that played at Ohio State. Michael Jenkins, David Boston, Chris Olavay, Marvin Harrison, Jr., Devin Smith, Chris Carter,

Santonio Holmes, Garrett Wilson, Emeka, Edgkin Jr., Carnell Tate, Jackson Smith, and Jigba, Joey Galloway, Michael Thomas, Terry Glenn, Brian Hartline, Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and a hundred others. And I think everybody you mentioned was the first round draft pick, by the way. So, like, even though he will be a legend in Columbus, absolutely. They ain't making any statues of Jeremiah Smith outside the freaking building. Okay. And I don't know where Florida was as a program. You know their history better than me.

But Tim Tebow's got a statue. Tim Tebow can go to Gainesville as a person that will forever be a gator legend in a way that so many of his peers because Florida's had a lot of draft picks too. Tim Tebow is held in a higher regard. Am I right about that? Yes, there's three statues.

There's Steve Spurger, there's Danny Werfel, there's Tim Tebow. And I don't know, I don't know if you're a statue expert of players' statues around the country, but what I do know is that maybe there's an inherent value that can't be bought about being on a list that isn't that long or being a trailblazer in doing something that no one's done. And I think it's especially powerful when the place that you're doing it for is a home state place and is a family connection.

If your uncle played there, like, again, we are three games into a starting tenure here. And I know that it's just, but like, it's not always as simple. I think a lot of times it's as simple as how much are you getting paid. There are plenty of players that die for checks no matter what. that's never going to stop. That's part of our sport. Now we have to deal with it. But just because

most people or many people favor the money or favor the opportunity at a bigger check and don't care as much about what colors they're wearing, that doesn't mean that nobody does. That doesn't mean that nobody does. And I also think it's the inverse back in the day when everybody was committing

because it was a family atmosphere and everyone got in the locker room, loved them, and the coached him have a great relationship. And there was a duffel bag outside. There was also a duffel bag. I think that, like, it doesn't matter. Like, I think that we get so accustomed to how things are that we shut off our brains to accept that maybe not everyone's the same.

So, you know, we went to family atmosphere, you know, going to win their home state school, all the same tropes and bullshit that we read on, you know, But it wasn't bullshit for everybody. I remember talking to Tim Tebow about this when he was in high school. He wanted to be a gator,

always. It was his dream. It meant something to him. Now, he did consider Alabama because Florida fired the coaching staff and he had grown to like Larry Fedora and so he did look around, but eventually he came back to it.

Like, this is where I want to play. I realize it's not like that for everybody anymore. But it wasn't always like that for everybody back then either. Back then people made business decisions about this offense is better for me. This defense is better for me. This position coach has X number of draft picks just because it wasn't purely transactional in the form of a double bag or a check. It doesn't mean that you're not choosing with your wallet anyway.

So I just I think, and it's not that Jeremiah Smith did anything wrong. There will be plenty of players like Jeremiah Smith who do that too, want to go to the place that it will prop up. If I was a five-star receiver, I would probably want to go to Ohio State too because of that same reason that you just mentioned. But in the events where there is an atypical place, doing something atypical with an atypical person, let's not try to make him typical.

Maybe he's not typical. You know, maybe he's different in other ways, too. So I didn't see that video that you played. Let me point something out. Let me point something out, too. The NFL people, like, I know I'm putting the cart before the horse here. We don't know if he's going to develop in a way that makes him very desirable as an NFL prospect. But he has certainly all the measurables and all that.

So there's that part of it. But let's say he has all of the athletic traits of Anthony Richardson, but all of the intangible traits of Fernando Mendoza. Let's let, I mean, that's, that's pie in the sky. But let's just say that that person exists. And he's that person. Yeah, his name is Cam Newton. Well, true. Exactly.

But how much more. more do you want to draft him number one overall if you're a downtrodden franchise and you'd have to be a downtrodden franchise to get the number one pick. Yeah. A guy who's already done it. Yeah. And is going to embrace being the face of your franchise because he's already done that too. I've got news for you.

There isn't a single NFL scouting department in the country that hasn't already broken down three games of his tape. Correct. on it. So if you think he has to go to Florida State or Ohio State or USC or Oregon or Georgia or Bama to get drafted, you are

insane. The number one overall pick, I will remind you this past year, very different path, was in the transfer portal, arrived there, was a man named Fernando Mendoza who played for the University of Indiana, was the Heisman winner and a national champion. So, I don't know again how this is going to

end, but I got to tell you something. I think it's awesome for the sport that Mississippi State is a segment. It's awesome for the sport that Mississippi State is playing in the game on Saturday against Missouri is a seven point favorite or six and a half point favorite. And it's awesome for the sport when somebody that wears a different uniform than you're used to seeing does highlights that make your jaw drop. And you know what? I am all for parody. Right. Everybody's always the word parody, parody, parody, parody. We have it. Let's enjoy it. Let's enjoy the fact that there's a new kid on the block that might ruffle some

feathers this year. And, you know, I hope for Pete Naco's sake and our sake that that doesn't come to pass. But you know what? There's a lot of season. The transfer report doesn't happen until after the season. Maybe Mississippi State will mess around and do something special this year. We'll find out. And maybe, just maybe, he'll be at Mississippi State next year because he wants to be at Mississippi State. And he wants to be a legend. Camaro Taylor and the Bulldogs playing against Missouri. On Saturday, Mississippi State is favored by six and a half points. Cannot wait to watch the game.

Needless to say, most of the phone calls already came after that incredible, unbelievable insane NC State Vanderbilt finish. But I want to start in a different place. We were just talking about Camaro Taylor at Mississippi State.

He beat South Carolina and Columbia on Saturday. Well, we got a South Carolina fan who was at the game. Roll it. Hey, guys. Big, big fan. I've been watching for a while. I just came home from that abomination of a performance from Shane Beamer's game caught today against those

Mississippi State Bulldogs. I just want to say, like, does Shane Beamer recruit aliens over football players? Because, like, looking at it, when you think about it, it's Lenore Sellers, alien, but can't really complete a path. Dylan Stewart is, obviously Dylan Stewart. He can rush the pass whatever you want. great downfield guy, but it doesn't seem to be able to catch a path. Like, what is going on? Is this it for Shane? Because I thought going into today it was it. Like, what do we do from here? It feels like it's over. But I need y'all to talk me off the ledge.

All right. I have a good night. Bye. That is an interesting question, the aliens question, we have talked about the aliens. Now, here's my thing. Dylan Stewart, as advertised,

wrecked games when healthy. Can wreck games when healthy? Lenora Sellers, we have seen him play really well. Nick Harbour's the one that never really quite panned out relative to his athletic gifts. But it's interesting because that was always our pitch with South Carolina. is they're dangerous because they have quality players, like Kinnard two years ago, coming off the edge,

which made Dylan Stewart as a freshman even more dangerous because you had a guy who could sack people off the edge on the other side. But they always had, you know, quality players, and then Shane Bieber was going and getting these aliens, which it used to be only Georgia had the aliens and only Ohio State had the aliens. So a couple aliens sprinkled in should make them dangerous. But last year they were not dangerous.

This year, it has not started well. They lost. Now, granted, they lost to another alien in Camario Taylor. But they're going to Alabama this weekend. Alabama's still got a few of those guys. Not as many as they used to. But that's the question. Like, do they not have enough underlying quality?

Because last year, their offensive line was just not very good at all. And it was the problem. They spent to bolster it. Jukary's Peak just came back last week. So maybe that will settle. But I just don't know. Maybe it's not enough underlying quality to make the aliens matter. Do you know what's weird to me?

Hmm. They were on the fringe of the playoff with sellers on their team. Two years ago, yeah. So it's not that these guys have never produced. They have one game. and they were very good two years ago. And I know it feels like an ancient history now because of what happened last year

and what happened on Saturday. But it is kind of bizarre to me that Lenora Sellers hasn't gotten to where his physical gifts imply he should be. And I think that when you get the players, I mean, I still think it's the hardest part as getting the players, right? It's still the hardest part of coaching.

But what do you do when you have them is really important? And Shane Beamer has done a good job and his staff in the South Carolina brass, it's a win to be able to retain these guys because it's not very often that you get them for two or three years. It should be utterly disappointing to the people who love South Carolina,

as you heard in the phone call there, that the players never reached the potential that their athletic gifts promised. And you can ask the question, why? Was there bad development? Was the strength, you know, situation? Like Nick Harbor perhaps was never going to. Like Nick Harbor was, you know,

know, potentially like an Olympic sprinter who happened to be huge. Yeah. And he was a good, good high school football player. But remember, the question of where he would play was part of his recruitment. Was he an edge rusher? Was he a receiver? Was he a tight end? Like, nobody could quite figure that out.

So that may be part of it. But it's interesting, though, the Lenora Sellers, Nick Harbor connection, the best we've ever seen it. They're actually going back to the site of the best we've ever seen that connection. That was the 31-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds to go at Alabama two years ago that allowed them to cut the lead to two. And then they had an onside kick. So that was the play where you were like, oh, my God. If they can do this against Alabama and Tuscaloosa, how many times are you going to do this over the next three years?

Right. So to go to the next part of the question, and I know that you have a history having been born in South Carolina and grew up rooting for them, where do you think things should be with Beamer? And do you think that the fire Beamer chance are warranted? I know how they're going to be. Like, Seasperger spoiled this fan base forever.

Because before it was fairly used to, hey, we're not one of the better programs in the SEC. We're new to the SEC. We weren't one of the better programs as an independent. We didn't win a bowl game for like 100 years. All of that. The fans sort of understood it. They were kind of Chicago Cubs fans, basically,

but pre-Chicago Cubs winning the World Series. They were like, okay, we have these lovable losers. We show up every week. We love our team. The decks on Williams-Brice sway, when we get really excited. Like all of that stuff. We're going to knock off Georgia once every three or four years,

and it's going to be fun. And then Steve Spurger shows up, and they went 11 games three years in a row to beat Clemson five years in a row. And it's like, oh, wait, we can do this? It's possible here. And now that you want it. That you just described, the lovable, you know, we're going to show up,

we're going to root for our team. Maybe we'll beat Georgia every five years, but we accept our plot in life. does that exist anywhere anymore? Is anybody that? Who's that? No, it's really not. I think everybody's kind of like, we can do this.

And I think that if Indiana taught us anything, I think that that was gone before Indiana won the championship last year. I think we all love football and want to be great at football and think we can be good at football. But now that Indiana won the championship, you literally could be in any part of the country. In a universe where Indiana can win the football national championship, there's no reason to believe that South Carolina can't.

Because it wasn't just a traditionally bad program. It was the worst program of all time. Exactly. It could not get worse. So, we're in a position now where everybody's thought processes have completely shifted. And I think they should. And honestly, Andy, I would be upset.

I mean, I just feel like if you, I mean, if you were working out a job and you kept being told you're going to get a big bonus, you're going to get a big bonus, you're going to a big bonus. And they showed you the most. money on the table and you were anticipating something happening and then it never came you'd be mad is that not the same thing that you use that example it's interesting you use that example i was highly critical of the bemer extension after 2024 yeah because it didn't need to be done he wasn't going anywhere nobody was trying to hire him it's the same thing i said about the brent venables extension

before this season and oklahoma fans got mad at me about that you didn't need to do it south carolina should know better because they did they did this once before they they extended well must champ after one good season. I don't know. And then he, it just made his buyout more expensive when you eventually fired him. And that's the same thing here. Like, if you're not immediately trying to keep your coach

from going somewhere, don't worry about it. Now, it's Venables ties into this too. I think a lot of that was because Oklahoma had such a horrific year. And Shane Beamer was somebody that Oklahoma had considered when they hired Brent Venables. Yeah. So I think that's part of it. It is really weird that it's sort of coming back around a couple years later with Shane

Beamer and now with Brent Venables on the other side of it. It just seems to me, and I don't know if it's because time is moving faster and years are going by quicker, that just yesterday we were celebrating him as like one of the up-and-coming great coaches. And maybe that's what happens when you go on a playoff or a season that leads to a playoff run or a playoff consideration the way that they did a few years ago. But, you know, I don't know, like, based on what South Carolina could be, we know they could be better.

But is he doing a fireable job right now in your mind? If they're below 500, they absolutely can do better than that. Absolutely. There's no question. They should expect more. Yeah. But it's frustrating. And I understand if I were a South Carolina fan,

because, like, you know, the other thing, too, we were just talking about Camario Taylor at Mississippi State. You know, we might even find out that like the Fernando Mendoza situation at Indiana is fleeting. Having a great player or having a great group of guys that have physical skill sets like this might not be a very common occurrence. So you want to be able to capitalize on that when these players are there. But you also have to put the roster around them.

And then maybe that's the problem. Maybe that's what hasn't been happening. They certainly didn't put the offensive line around them. Or maybe they didn't put the coaching staff around them. Obviously, they're on a new offensive coordinator this year. They've got Kendall Bryles because Shula got fired. So that's also a piece of it. But we picked the South Carolina Alabama game earlier this week.

So Shane Beamer, there might be a Stiles Make Fights thing between Shane Beamer and Kailin Abor. So watch out for this one. But yeah, go watch our picks video and we'll see. We will watch South Carolina heading Tuscaloosa. This is one of those if you win in Tuscaloosa, it forgives a lot.

If you lose, the rest of the schedule is looking very, very daunting. Ari, got another fan leaving the stadium. but interestingly enough, usually when people call the Indiana on 3 hotline, they are mad. This was mad at me, but happy in general. Ari, go ahead and put your feet up for this segment, baby. This one's not for you. My bones of pick us with Andy Staples. Andy, it's about time you start putting some respect on those Florida gators.

Dan Mullen's gone. Napier's gone. We're back, baby. the John Sumerle era is here. Those boys at Auburn were running for the parking lot by the second quarter. I want you to put some more respect on those Florida gators. Come on now. Didn't Auburn score to make it a five-point game in the fourth quarter?

And you're obviously not aware of the ref conspiracy. Well, it was fairly, poorly officiated. There were calls that should have gone Florida's way that would have changed the score a little bit. Yeah, I agree with that. but that I didn't put respect on their name? Like, I wrote a column talking about how Florida spends like a team that could make the playoff, so that Florida would now, I mentioned Auburn in this one too, but that Florida or Auburn could be the teams from outside the preseason top 25

that could be in playoff contention because they had the rosters, at least they spent enough on the roster to do it as a matter of, do you coach them up well enough? Clearly, John Summerall is coaching them up pretty well. clearly Buster Faulkner, his offensive coordinator, is coaching them up very well. Clearly, the roster is very talented, which we knew. We knew that. That's why John Semerall kept so many of the guys that Billy Napier recruited,

because they knew this was already a talented roster. It just needed a few extra pieces and some better coaching. So I think we've been pretty accurate about Florida so far. We have not used the B word yet, because the B word only comes when you're ready to make the playoff and we're ready to compete for national titles. Because this is Florida. Eight and four isn't good enough.

Nine and three ultimately isn't good enough. You take it this year because you want to see the improvement. But you're supposed to win the national title at Florida. And I know, like there are fans of other schools that say, well, that's stupid. because they've only been good under two coaches. Okay. But they were really good under Steve Spurier and Urban Meyer,

and it showed what you can do. It showed where the ceiling is. So you're supposed to win the national title. And I think if John Summerall were here with us, you know what he'd say? He'd say, hell yeah, brother. Hell yeah. I'm supposed to win the national title.

That's what he'd say. Because he understands. Like he understands the job he took. you might have misunderstood that, I think, because I don't think he's mad at you. I think he's just, I think he's amped up and he wants the Florida. He wants me to say Florida's back.

I'm not ready to say that yet, but here's what I will say. But that was the criticism of your past coverage, I don't think. I think your past coverage have been rational. Oh, I have a reputation among the people from my alma mater as being a little hypercritical of it. I think I've been accurately critical. And here's what I'll say about this. new era. I think they're on their way. I think they hired the right guy. I think he's shown you

enough through three games and one off season that this is going to be very different than the Billy Napier era. Now, I guess that Dan Mullen won a bunch of games, his first three years, but let me put it this way. There is no way John Sumerall at any point in his career at Florida will answer a question the way Dan Mullen answered the recruiting season question. it'll never happen the day i returned under he understands the job he took he understands the job he took um so that said big game this weekend against a really good team huge and i know that beating auburn feels good and putting up a bunch of points feels good uh i just would not fly too close to the sun yet so like i mean like there's well that's not ready to use the b word because yeah the best

quarterback in the country is coming into the swamp this week. Yeah. And you just gave up 39 points. I think being favored, being favored is basically a win. Like it's like the fact that they're three and a half point favorites is hilarious. And they, and it makes me feel like they're going to win. Yeah. And he won Lacey, by the way, game time decision.

Yeah. So that's a huge piece of this too. Like, yeah. Whether he plays or not, I think we'll have an effect on on who wins this game. But that, that call felt good to me because it was just like a. passionate college football fan who roots for a place that has won national championships in the semi-recent past. Yeah.

It was just amped up to not, you know, leave the swamp depressed this week. You know, and here's the thing. I think if they lose, they still won't leave depressed because they will be, I think they're going to be competitive against Ole Miss. I think if Ole Miss wins it's because they had to fight to win it. Yeah. This is not the same thing. this is not last year where you knew going in how the story was going to end.

This is not that. Yeah, for sure. And I love his vibes. I think that you can. And the other thing, too, that I say a lot, and I don't think you've ever waited on, and I'm very curious to know what your opinion is, is how much do you think early returns matter in the ultimate success of a coach? Like if you...

Oh, a lot. I think, especially in this era, like, if you... you're not winning by year two, you're done. It's too late. You should be fine. Like, and I don't say that five games, though. I'm talking like very early. I don't know that that's as critical.

I think as long as you were showing upward trajectory by the end of the first year, you're fine. Yeah. They win this game, buddy. That's like to the moon. Yeah. But I will say the thing that these guys did, and they did it differently than other new stats,

they looked at the roster. and said, there's a lot of good here. Let's try to keep most of it. And let's add some pieces that'll work with it. So let's add an Aaron Philo. Let's add an Eric Singleton Jr. Let's add Luke Harpering. Let's, you know, add those little pieces to a Jaden Baugh, a Jaden Woods, a Miles Graham,

a Dallas Wilson, a Vernel Brown the 3rd. Like, that is impressive. because a lot of coaches would have just said, okay, you hired me, I'm going to wipe the board clean, I'm going to make this roster in the image that I want to make it, instead of just honestly evaluating what's already there and saying, you know what, there's a lot of these guys we can win with.

Yeah, but I'm very excited, and I don't know how it's going to go. But the what-if games five years down the line are going to be highly entertaining. And we knew this is somewhere. I wrote that column about summer last week. I mean, he's the king of sliding doors. There are a bunch of different places he could be right now. You know, if Mark Stoops does wind up getting the Texas A&M job,

he's probably Kentucky's third-year coach right now. If there's not a separate coaching search going on that North Carolina's AD may or may not have known about, he could be North Carolina's second-year coach right now. and probably have Dary Mintsa playing for him in Chapel Hill. Like, he could be Auburn's coach right now. There was a scenario if Ole Miss lost the Egg Bowl last year and didn't make the playoff and they did like a true coaching search. He could have been Ole Miss's coach right now.

Yeah. So. And if it turns out to be great, that's a lot of pits and stomachs. Well, yeah, absolutely. Actually, we didn't talk about this, Ole Miss at Florida. This is a great coaching matchup, Because you've heard, have I said anything bad about Pete Golding yet? What would there even be to say negative about him? Absolutely nothing.

But I have been on the, since he beat George in the playoff last year, I have been on board with, let's give this guy ultimate benefit of the doubt because in his small sample size as a head coach, he's already shown you he can do the most important things. So. And that was before they played a game, Andy. That was even before they played a game. And by the way, I don't know if we're allowed to say,

this so River, you can cut it out if you have to, but I'm going to go for it. When they show him talking and he's got a lip full of dip. Is that not like, do you not get 10% more credit for being a great coach in that scenario? Like that's a guy, that's a guy being a dude right there. That's a man being a man. When you're, when you're from that part of Louisiana and you play for the Delta State fighting Oprah, like, yeah. Yeah.

That's what you want. I know some, but I know some people, like even my wife maybe might look at a man who can, fix something with his hands or get underneath the engine or bay of a car and fix something or put in drywall or mow the lawn or whatever. But like when I think of a man, I think of a football guy would dip in his lip. He's not, dude. I do love this coaching matchup. And I wonder, because the way the new SEC schedule works is if they're not one of your three fixed opponents,

you do still play him twice every four years. Yeah. This could be a really good coaching matchup for a long time to come. Is there anybody that's dead man walking right now? I mean, I guess Shane Beamer would be the closest thing to like hot seat in the SEC right now, right? Yeah, and remember so much changed in the SEC, it's highly unlikely that there's going to be tons of movement. You either have like established veteran or exciting young, new coach. And I'm very excited to see how the levels set over the years.

Yeah. This is, and I think there were a lot of good hires made in the SEC this year. Like, it's not just Pete Golding and John Summerall. I think Will Stein was a great hire. Lane Kiffin was a good hire. He's a new coach, at least in a new place in the SEC. So, yeah, this is going to be a really interesting how we watch these guys grow in these jobs. But it's going to be a lot of fun, and I cannot wait to see this game.

But yes, I think you will hear me putting a lot of respect. on Florida's name over the next weeks, months, and years, because I'm not going to use the B word yet. They got to actually get there, but they're certainly headed the right way. We've had successful coaches on the, I mean, we just got done talking about Summerall. He was on the show. We had Clark Lee's been on the show. And he was the beneficiary of the disaster of an ending. I don't know. I don't want to be the, if you go on the Andy Ari show, your cursed reputation.

Listen, I have participated in the Sports Illustrated cover jinks. I have been a person who has written a sports illustrated cover story that has jinxed a team. I had the Virginia basketball cover story when they were the number one overall seed, and then they lost a UMBC. So, like, I know how it feels, and I don't know that I ever want to be that again. So I'm a little concerned. And I don't want to get that reputation, because I got to be honest with the R. if people think that we are going to curse them into having the dumbest losses in the history of dumb losses,

they're never going to come on our show again. No, I don't think that that's fair. Okay. No, there's no trend there. I mean, this is one person, but like there's no like longstanding trend of. Also, Dave Doran did not make a dumb decision. The correct decision, as I tweeted before the play was snapped, is to take a safety. but it is to take the safety.

It is not to try to run into a tackler and thus put the ball in danger. Yeah. I think that maybe there was a sentence or two in coaching that could have been uttered. I don't know. I wasn't a puddle man. I don't know if that was communicated

or C.J. Bailey just had a short circuit, but obviously the worst case scenario happened. You could have thrown it out of the back of the end zone. You could have ran out of the back of the end zone. You could have taken a knee. There's a lot of different things that could have been done. but you also don't really consider that ending until it happens either like you're not the guy's not gonna fumble it and then you watch him fumble and it's like oh my god that's like that's like our

favorite our favorite quote that ever appeared on tv news what are you going to do stab me quote from man stabbed right that that's the thinking that gets you yeah on that on that tv news only we could have done something to avoid the craziest shit we've ever seen in our entire life like yeah i don't know all right All right, producer River, play the next call. Hey, Ari. This is John from North Carolina. Clearly a North Carolina state fan.

You want my thoughts? How stupid can one be? I mean, I don't understand why you pull your running quarterback out for the most important runplay of the game. Idiot. Idiot. It's stupid. All the words describe how I feel. And as an alumni, I think my degree just went down the drain because we're stupid university.

Have a good one, all right? Is there a correlation between the value of your degree and how good your football team is? Because traditionally speaking, my diploma might not be worth all that much either. Not necessarily. I just love that he believes that the ending of this. game has devalued his degree. But who did they pull out of the game? Did I miss something?

That's what I was trying to figure out. Was there a play? No, they, this is one we were trying to watch a bunch of once. They had a running quarterback in when they were doing their run QB package to try to run out the clock. Oh, yes. That to me is such. And they put CJ in in the debacle play.

No, I was a guy who I trust to be my starter in the situation where I need to say. That's very easy to go back in time when you have. have something that happens and then say you should have done the other thing. Could you imagine if they put the non-starter in and that happened? That would have been way worse, I think. Yeah, I think the starting quarterback has to be. That would be Dave Doran was at fault at that point. Yeah, the non-starter, I mean, I had a fairly decent day against Vanderbilt,

if I'm not mistaken, he was used heavily. I know, but if you go with the person that is most used to handling the ball, like that's, or is taking the most snaps, I'm not going to beat him up for that. the only thing that I think that you could have a real serious criticism of is was the team properly coached because they did crap their pants? Could you have done something in practice or said something in the huddle beforehand in order to mitigate the possibility of what happened happening? And I just don't know the answer to that.

Sometimes just bad things happen, you know? And that backup quarterback, that running quarterback's name is Will Wilson. Yeah. So, yeah, I don't blame Dave Doran for that. That's not devaluing your. degree. Now, the decision to not run out of the back of the end of the end zone. Oh, yeah, Will Wilson, eight,

eight carries 49 yards and a TD against Fandy. But the decision to not Yeah. I mean, you also don't want to be too successful a runner in that scenario because if you get out of the end zone, you lose too. So like, you know, like maybe break the back.

Yeah. Yeah. It was four. It was fourth down. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's fourth down. Yeah. There's no like, I saw a few people say, chuck the ball downfield, but what if the ball lands with one second on the You can't throw the ball down field. Yeah, they get the ball on the goal line if that happens. If he wouldn't have, the thing that is so hard for me, and I said this on the show on Saturday, and I'll say it again,

is that CJ Bailey was actually, it was not a mental mistake, I don't think. I think what he was trying to do makes sense. Stay up for as long as possible. Well, it was a mental mistake because even if there's four seconds left when you take the safety, You're still probably, like you have a 99.9-9-9-9-9-9 chance to win. So do you think that he should have just been like take the snap and throw it out of the back of the end zone or run around, whatever? Because like the second you open up and move backward and continue moving backward as slowly as possible. But the second anybody gets near you, move backward quickly and Dan Roloff's get.

Yeah. You want to go over the back line because if, and you could have taken three seconds at least. So let's say you took three seconds. then you're kicking off from your own 20. Remember the safety you have to kick off from the 20. You kick it low so that it definitely hits the ground and someone has to pick it up and return it.

The three seconds will expire. As long as you cover that kick and don't give up a kick return touchdown. Again, the chances of that are so low compared to if you try to run the ball into the tacklers. Yeah.

I feel, bad for the kid because if he wouldn't have fumbled the ball like I don't think anybody would have thought twice about it and I guess you can say about a lot about a lot of things in life it's like if this with the terrible thing didn't happen then we wouldn't have thought about it yeah we'd fine you know just he was probably fighting for an extra second when fighting was a losing battle to begin with so yes and that's but that's the mental mistake it is a mental mistake rather than a physical one and like it doesn't mean C.J. Bailey's a lost cause as a

quarterback but it does mean the North Carolina fans got to be happy yeah during the lightning delay of the Clemson, North Carolina game. Here's one of them. Hey, buddy. I just woke up this morning as I wake up every morning, and I just thought, man, it is great not to be an NC State Wolfpack fan today. And, you know, the last time that State beat an SEC opponent that had more than one win in the regular season was not since before my father was born,

and I'm a collegiate graduate. So, you know, am I just living and dying here in the Tar Heels' Lightning Delay, best on all the other results? Yes, I am. And am I absolutely glad that NC State sucks? Booty? Yes, I am. Go heels forever. NC State sucks. Yeah. I do love how this dude is sitting there during the lightning delay thinking this is going to be the greatest day ever because NC State lost in the dumbest way possible.

And my tar heels are about to put boot to ass at Clemson. Like when this lightning delay ends, they're going to score, they're going to punch one in the end zone. And then they're going to be up. And then Davo and them have no chance to come back. well, that's not how it went down. I mean, the game was trending badly for North Carolina before the lightning delay, but they still had the ball, I believe, inside the 10-yard line with a chance to get by two scores.

Yeah, that might be bad karma for himself personally, but like, you know, hey, I think that the joy of watching your rivals suck is like almost as good as your team being good, so I understand. But he almost had both. he almost said both in one day. Producer River, we got one more.

Let's hear the Vandy fan. Yeah, I'm a Vandy fan, and I can't believe what I just watched. As far as wins go, I think it's the perfect way for Jared Curtis to win his first game. He looked great the whole day and then made really just a boneheaded freshman decision right at the end of the game, and we still get to walk out of there with a win on probably the most ridiculous play I've ever seen. And I was at the game where we beat Alabama two or three years ago. And to me, that is a more ridiculous win. I felt like we didn't really deserve that at all.

And to come out of that game, 3 and O is just unbelievable. Go into SEC play. I feel like we can still make a bowl game. And you're really just watching this season for Jared Curtis's development. That is truly, truly crazy stuff. I don't even know what to say. I'm from the North Carolina area and I watched that game with a bunch of family that went to NC State. And I think that is the most dejected I've ever seen a group of people look after a football game.

And you know what? We're 3-0. Screw it. We got SEC play coming up next week. And we just have to be better. The defense has to be better. but Jared is going to be a special player, and I'm super excited to see how he develops over the course of this season.

And it's amazing to me, honestly, that it took Clark Lee this long to make the decision to just start him and throw him out there and let him get these reps. It's mind-blowing. One of the best games I've ever seen in my life. I can't believe it. I love how it goes from it's the stupidest way to win, and we didn't deserve it, too, one of the best games I've ever seen in my life.

Yeah, well, I mean, it's got to be one of the best games ever. And the thing that amuses me the most about the last part of the game, Andy, is that like even Clark Lee didn't realize they had one during the news or during the postgame interview. He goes, you know, you want to learn lessons and lost, I mean, wins. Like, because, like, in his head, everybody thought they lost. I mean, everybody in the building, everybody was watching it was, I get it. Like, that was kind of a tough situation. I know, like, we've seen a lot of boneheaded things happen in sporting events that cause teams to lose.

I mean, even in the NBA finals, wasn't there like a foul, no foul situation, where it's like you're game seven of the NBA finals or game five or whatever it was. And it's like, why are we not fouling? I don't remember what it is. But I want to unpack the Jared Curtis thing here for a minute, Andy, because I think that he said it was the perfect way for him to win his first game.

The perfect way for him to win his first game would have been hitting the real out for a touchdown. Exactly. Not underthrowing it for an interception. It was the perfect bailout win because it would have sucked if his career started with him blowing the game. Yes. So I think from that standpoint, from a mental aspect of this, that Jared Curtis can move on into the week and not feel like a leper and really kind of lean into the things that he made a mistake on and, you know, but being victorious in the process.

But I was like, I'm used. Your boys at Yahoo, Andy? I don't know if you saw the tweet. It was like, Jared Curtis prevails and his starting, first starting game. I was like, that's not what happened. Burying the lead a little bit, guys. Yeah, I was like, JFK slows traffic in Dallas. Like that was the headline.

And it's just like, but I do think that if you're a Vandy fan, and I do find it kind of interesting too, the nugget that was buried there that he didn't even realize is we're only watching this season to see how Jared Curtis develops. Is that where Vanderbilt fans are? I thought that they were on like, we're good. I think that I don't think that's representative. They're going to Auburn this weekend. I think most Vandy fans are expecting to compete in this game. I don't think they're, I don't think they're ready to be back to same old Vandy.

Yeah, I don't think they want that at all. Yeah. So, yeah, having a five-star quarterback going to win and develop is really good proposition for next year. But I don't know if people have given up on the proposition of being good this year either. Exactly. Ari, we played a call last week from an Oklahoma State fan who was celebrating the Oregon win, probably the best way possible. He called that. Andy Ari. And here, still drinking bourbon, still sitting in this pool.

Again, West Virginia showed us a lot against Virginia. I was very pleasantly surprised. Oklahoma State, if they're back, they go to Morgantown and win. But there is the B word.
