Hey Andy, it's Yeti.
Hey, thanks for getting me on the show this week.
I'm really glad we were able to get some closure.
I know that we kind of left some things unanswered for all of our listeners,
and it seems like we really were able to get some places.
But they can understand what's going on, that everybody's alive, nobody died yet.
Just kidding. I love you. Thanks for having me. Talk to you soon.
Yo Andy, what the fuck's going on with
the eddie man i thought you like guys made up and you have some fucking closure like i told you you
could stay in my house for two days it's been two weeks the guy's an insane person he's crying like
every fucking 10 minutes he's singing dashboard confessionals this guy is unstable get him out of
my fucking house get Get him a job.
I'm going to kick, my wife is going to leave me if I don't get this guy out of my house in the next 24 hours.
Please, dude.
He's trying to have sex with me and my wife, okay?
Get him out.
All right, here we are, back again.
Andy Frasco's World Saving Podcast.
I'm in Boise, Idaho today, and I was loading my stuff.
I wasn't really loading, I was just watching them load.
And look in the corner of my eye, and I see Yeti.
So here we are in our van.
What's up, party people?
I haven't talked to you since the breakup.
We haven't talked since.
We exchanged a text message on Thanksgiving.
Oh, I was going to read them.
We should read them.
Oh, my God.
They're so childish.
You exchanged a.
Oh, shit.
You also did.
I sent you a message on Instagram last week.
April Fool's thing, too.
Oh, I did post that
I'm sorry Andy Frasco
Fuck you
I thought it was funny
Yeah it was real funny
We hadn't talked though
So if we had talked it probably would have been better
I wished you happy Thanksgiving
You said fuck you
Same difference
I said fuck toy
You meant to say fuck you. Same difference. I said, fuck toy. Fuck toy. You meant to say,
fuck you. Same difference. What's all this up with all this angst? What, what that was? Oh my God.
What'd I do to you? You called me on my bullshit. Number one, like that's, we, we got into an
argument about what we were doing with the podcast. And, um, I, and you were like, Hey,
were doing with the podcast and um i and you were like hey let's do this for real dude come on and i just was like no i don't want to or i was also like i don't know it's like one of those things
like you think your opinion is the right opinion yeah and then you're like there's camping on there
sorry um and then you realize like wait um i was just uh coming out of a place of fear and anxiety
Which is a lack of present moments
And it all just had to be over a microphone
Right, that's all it was
What I'm holding in my hand
Literally what I'm holding in my hand
All I wanted you to get was a fucking microphone
That was it
And a Zoom
Yep
And now we don't work together anymore.
We don't work together anymore.
It's fucked up.
It is.
Why were you so mean to me, Yeti?
What'd I do?
Did I poke something in you?
It's one of those things like...
I was jealous of you
of what
so
I'll unpack this a little bit
jealousy comes out of your own
feelings of inadequacy
inadequacy
that's what I believe jealousy comes from
and so when you're jealous of someone
it's usually because somebody's done something that you want or they have something that you want or whether. And so I saw the accomplishment that you had created and what you said to me was like, I want you, I'm trying to make you my co-host. And I took, instead of being like, hey, I want you on my level. We had had this conversation off and on over the year that we were doing the podcast together and I just
I refused to see it that way
I took it as an insult instead of
you know a hey come on
you know like I need you on my team
I need this to I need us to be cohesive
I need us to be on the same level
and
because of that
I lashed out
came after you and I'd gotten to know you and I got to know you in some
intimate ways.
And I said,
and so we didn't fuck.
No,
we do need to clarify that.
No,
there was no sexual intercourse or anything like that.
I don't even know if Andy's a good kisser,
but the point is,
is that,
but we,
we had,
we had become pretty close friends and i used
that as a weapon against you and that was the thing that i regretted the most and still do is
that instead of instead of just saying hey i'm dealing with shit or you're right um thanks for
the reminder um i took it personally and and attacked and that's the thing and andy that i
know is that um i do that to a lot of people in my life.
And that's something I've had to come to terms with.
It's been five and a half, six months.
Do you think it's just running away?
Oh, absolutely.
You're a commitment phobe, like all of us.
Oh, man. What did I say?
Fuck kids, don't fuck kids.
And somebody else said something.
I was like, I abhor two things. Responsibilities and taxes.
We could have had something dope going on though, Yeti.
We could have.
Here, smoke this.
Yeah.
But I was pissed.
I was just, you know, it's like, I'm working so hard on this fucking thing, dude.
And like, I don't even have the time.
Right.
fucking thing, dude.
It's all,
and like,
I don't even have the time.
Right.
This is like,
I'm doing this with the little
fucking time
that I have
just so we could
give people
a taste
into this world.
And we're just
two guys
getting to know
each other at first,
you know?
So like,
when you start talking shit,
like publicly,
like I kept all my shit
to myself.
I didn't let anyone know. When people asked, where's Yeti Wood to myself i didn't let anyone know when people
asked where's yeti wouldn't i didn't let anyone know it was up because out of respect just the
public stuff was kind of offensive yeah so just you know just be aware of that when you're like
trying to make homies with people well that's one of those things that we don't you're absolutely
right and that's one thing we don't realize in this interconnected hyper-connected world is you know whether you're overtly so you know i didn't
come out on twitter and say fuck andy frasco i want to say that clear i mean i did do the april
fools thing that we you know we just talked about but um what you're talking about is the inference
and the just you know the outright just like passive aggressive fuck you and so that's one of those
things like in the moment you're just angry and like that's where i was and then you look at it
and you realize the ripple effect of that and how that gets back and where that goes and that that's
one of those things that you know for everyone listening i love andy i don't think anything ill of anything he's done or anything like that and
honestly like
I fucked up
I fucked up too for
for going at you like that
but I just don't have time
for bullshit
I need to get
if I
if I'm not getting the help I need
I am going to move on
right and that's
and honestly that's why
you are where you are
is because
you found that formula
That says
I know what success looks like
And what it needs to look like
Around me
And when it
Doesn't match up
I'm gone
And I'm doing it
You know we talked
Goals right
You know what your goal is
And it's crystal clear
It's like Magic Johnson
Leaving the fucking Lakers dude
He knew
What's up with that
He just knew his time
He got fired
It's been such a
I've had such high anxiety
All fucking month
I don't know why
Because my career's going good
And just
You've had anxiety about the Lakers
Everything
Just the Lakers
Fucking
If I have any friends anymore
Like
Like real friends
Dude I've been dealing with that too
Is that just getting older
Maybe we think like our old friends
Are really our new friends
Let me ask you this
When you have those thoughts
Is it when you're by yourself
Looking at your phone
Seeing what people are doing
Where they're at
Yeah or if I'm sleep deprived
I wake up from
Drinking a bottle of Jameson
You know
Cause now that I'm not off the blow
I'm fucking drinking a lot
And that getting Yeah Sometimes when I drink too much Before a show Amosin, you know? So now that I'm not off the blow, I'm fucking drinking a lot.
And that getting, yeah.
Sometimes when I drink too much before a show, I get sad at the show.
It's depressing.
So you depress the fuck out of the show?
No, I mean, I'm turning on, but it's fake, you know?
Okay, I got you, I got you. You put on the show, but it's not.
It goes like back and forth. Like, I want to quit. I want to play music you I'm fucking sad You put on the show But it's not Yeah It goes like back and forth
Like I wanna quit
I wanna play music
I wanna quit
I wanna play music
And same with friends
Like
I want this guy in my life
I don't want this guy in my life
Right
You know like
I don't know if I'm just
Manic
Cause I'm sleep deprived
Well I mean there's something to that
I mean
Definitely
I mean I
Or I'm just getting older Well, I mean, there's something to that. I mean, definitely. I mean, I...
Or I'm just getting older.
And friends, you know, it's like...
You know how they say, like, I guess as you get older,
you're like, you have like...
Instead of having like two, ten good friends,
you'll have two.
Yeah, like you two, yeah.
Well, maybe that's just it.
I'm just like...
You got this tight group.
You guys roll around the world.
Yeah.
You know, I mean, you, Eccles, Beats, and Chang.
That's your core.
And Joe.
And Joe.
Oh, yeah.
Sorry.
Joe.
But, you know, on that core.
And then, you know, you've got that, you know, from Arno to your bass players to everybody
else that comes in.
I get it.
No, it is getting older.
I love those guys.
I'm not saying I don't.
Those guys aren't my best friends.
It's like,
you know,
now everyone has different prerogatives.
You know,
people are getting,
in my band are getting married and like now it's a financial situation
for our band
instead of it just being about the music.
And,
and,
you know,
I mean,
that's,
that's the way of life.
You know,
when you make your passions,
your, your dreams, your career, it's the way of life. When you make your passions, your dreams, your career,
it ends up being about finances sometimes.
So now that they're getting married,
I just feel like I'm really stressed out.
Yeah.
You start to feel... I play music now to...
I don't know.
I play music now to survive.
So does that heat become a little more real?
Yeah.
That pressure becomes concrete.
It's a pressure to be good.
Oh, okay.
It's a pressure to be really good every day
because afraid of everyone at all going away.
Now people, now my name is out there,
they expect me to fucking do frasco, crazy.
And some days I'm just fucking sad.
And I have to fucking wake up from that.
And the reason why I get sad is because I think about my past.
I think about what am I doing?
I'm just living on the road.
I'm getting older.
But when I get on that stage like sometimes it takes the whole set but
by the end of it i got my smile back it's what you do that's why you do it i mean i can
i get that like i feel the same way when i get on a stage and host and well that's how i felt
with the podcast we did it because we loved it and it was funny We were making people laugh Right And then when I had to do
Too much work
To pick up the slack of
Whatever mental thing
You're going through
Fucking
Or
Fucking
Starting to like dick and stuff
And
No
It's a life change
I mean thanks for acknowledging it
I'm cool with it man
I appreciate it
I know you're cool with it
You're like
I'm cool with it
As long as you don't come after me
No you
Just Keep that Those sweet lips off my dick What's it like to What's I'm cool with it, man. I know you're cool with it. You're like, I'm cool with it as long as you don't come after me.
Keep those sweet lips off my dick.
What's it like to realize you could just have people coming at you from any angle?
What?
It doesn't matter who it is.
You're not safe. You probably started off like it was chicks, and then suddenly you're like, oh, wait, dudes
like me too?
Son of a bitch.
Oh, man.
I don't know. Yeah, it like me too? Son of a bitch. Oh, man. I don't know.
Yeah, it's crazy.
Just being in a band.
That's what makes me feel lonely too.
I have all these three-minute conversations with everybody.
And it's like, bye.
You get a little jaded, don't you?
Jaded?
I think it's more of a, I'm not going to see these people
for a year
and they're not
going to reach out
and maybe some of them do
but like
I won't see them until
I come back
into their town
or until they get married
or have kids
and they stop showing up
right
you know
you see
I see that in
some of these college towns too
that we used to play
like Fayetteville
oh yeah yeah
we haven't played Fayetteville
In a couple years
I finally came back
It was weird
It was fun
Everybody's grown up
And their lives have gone on
And you're doing
Andy Frasco in the UN
Still doing Andy Frasco
Rolling in into town
With a trailer behind the van
But I don't know Yeti
What do you think?
Do you wanna
Do you wanna I wanna have closure
We uh
We did some really
Kick ass stuff with that podcast
Together
And
I apologize
For
Being so self centered
That I couldn't Work couldn't work in a partnership with you.
And that we had to get to the point where
we were just yelling at each other over text.
Yeah.
Over something we loved.
Over something we loved.
We weren't even making money on this thing.
Right.
And maybe that's part of it.
Maybe that's part of it.
We cared about it.
Yeah, but like... But at the same
time, I mean, it doesn't excuse it. I'm not saying that.
I'm just saying it like I'm trying to, you know,
you want to see how you get to that level. Where's that emotion
going? Yeah.
You know.
I am sorry.
I apologize.
I accept your apology. Thanks, dude.
And I'm sorry, though,
that I should have said things
a little differently or should have said things A little differently
Or should have just
Not just closed the door
I was over it dude
I was just fed up
I think we both were
And it
I wasn't great
I don't like the way it worked out
But I don't like the way it hashed out
I should say
But I like to see what you're doing
I like to listen to you on Todd Glass,
listening to the episodes.
It's cool to hear what you're doing.
People still come in.
These bands come into the bar.
And they're like, oh, yeah.
I was like, yeah, I did a podcast with a guy.
And just understanding what you expose me to
is the world of this touring world.
You always know that people that
have notoriety and exposure
to use the term famous
that they're people.
When I experienced that, getting to know you
and the guys, it took it on a whole
and it made me approach
these bands that come into town, these touring
bands differently. I've gotten to become
really good friends with a lot of these and I've gotten to become really good friends
with a lot of these
people I've met
just through a conversation
we're all in this together
like
I hang out with bands now
like
all
a lot of bands
listen to this podcast
and
you know
we're all fighting
the same fucking fight
it doesn't matter
who's more successful
than who
it's all
at the end of the day
we're
fucking sad because we live in a fucking van we're just dealing with our demons and we're you know we're dealing with our demons Who's more successful than who It's all At the end of the day We're Fucking sad
Because we live in a fucking van
We're just dealing with our demons
And we're
You know
We're dealing with our demons
Hashtag van life
Van life
And we're fucking drinking
And you know
It's lonely out here
But we're
We're doing it for a bigger purpose
Because we love
Making people
Fucking happy
Yeah
And that's what it comes down to
Like
If I ever think like
Would I ever quit?
And some days when I think I'm going to quit,
I can't quit this.
You know what I'm saying?
I don't,
I mean,
you can't,
it can't quit you either.
It can't quit me.
This is a lifestyle.
We need each other.
The people,
you know,
people who listen to this are fighting too.
You know,
we're all fucking soldiers in this thing.
And respect to everyone fucking trying to make a living doing this
because it's fucking hard.
It is.
It's hard.
And for you to feel like you have an open space with these bands now
because of this show, I feel like I've done my job.
Thanks.
Turned a man questionably about his sexuality
into a man he's always wanted to be.
Into a man who's sensitive now about the band culture.
Aware of it.
You're aware of it.
And I love it.
I think, seriously, if you're a touring musician,
it doesn't matter if it's 200 shows a year or 20 shows a year.
You're doing what the guy that's sitting on the couch touring musician, it doesn't matter if it's 200 shows a year or 20 shows a year.
You're doing what the guy that's sitting on the couch that's dropping negative comments on your YouTube
or your Facebook isn't doing.
So fuck him.
So I could say fuck you, Yeti, for talking shit?
Yeah.
Fuck you, Yeti.
Thanks.
If your friends can't tell you to fuck off
and you be okay with that
you get bigger problems
I you know
I don't like holding a grudge
one that's just it
is like
when we hold on to that stuff
like I walked up to you
in the alley
and I wasn't going to
like I was considering
like going out of town today
like I didn't know what to do
and I woke
I got to bed
and like I watched the sun
come up this morning
and I went to bed
and it wasn't until
Arno posted something
on Instagram,
I even remembered
you were in town,
honestly.
And I drove by,
and I saw you.
Yeah,
I got the follow,
I just got the follow back
from I Am Yeti today.
Yep.
I did,
well,
right after we talked in the alley,
I walked back in my car,
I was like,
when a girlfriend,
like,
fucking,
fucking hates your guts,
blocks you everywhere,
and then you just have,
like,
one good conversation,
like,
one good hi
And then I'll send the fucking
The DMs back
Followed by
I am Yeti
So
We're all the same
We are
We're all people
We're all breathe air
And everybody poops
Well I'm glad you took the initiative
Because I probably wouldn't have done it
I probably wouldn't have called you
I get that
You've got a lot of shit going on
And it's one of those things.
And it would have made me sad for not calling you.
Well, we...
And I'm just playing, you know.
I do this with my fucking family.
I was 13 years old.
My fucking grandpa didn't show up to my bar mitzvah.
And he paid for it.
And hell paid for it.
And just because he was pissed off at my uncle.
And I took that,
I fucking brought it,
I kept it pretty low
and I haven't got to talk to that family
for 20 years
because of this feud my mom had.
And I felt like I missed out on people in my family
because of some stupid ass feud.
And then
that cousin showed up
to my show in Arcata.
Yeah?
Like last week.
And she thought
that I am a guy who doesn't want to hold
a grudge. I want to fucking have an open
vessel with everyone.
And she came up to me and
opened the hats like hey i'm sorry
i you know i was 13 she was a little older than me she's probably i don't know 17 19 at that time
she's older than me now and we just had closure like hey you know she's like i'm so proud of you
you're a rock star and like i'm like thanks and i'm like she's like i'm like i was proud of you you're a rock star and like I'm like thanks and I'm like she's like
I'm like I was proud of her
that she got out of LA
and shit
and it's just like
I don't want to have
I don't want to
have a last goodbye
without
and I hope this isn't
a last goodbye
but if it is
because I don't come to
Boise a lot
that at least
we got to understand
who we are
yeah
and I appreciate you coming out, man.
I love you.
I love you, too.
It's not a ask you bye.
We kind of got the band back together today.
The band's back together.
The band's back together.
No promises.
I'm not co-hosting, but I think if you ever want to do some opening sex or halftime sex.
Oh, you know I got.
So that's the other thing I've been doing is I've been doing stand-up.
Oh, good.
And I've got a lot of stuff,
so I'll send it your way if it's appropriate.
Wow.
Yet he's grown up.
He's on that solo album.
Yeah.
What's that?
It's like,
I left,
I left the band to work on my solo project.
Death row records.
He's the,
uh,
he's cut,
he's out of,
uh,
and he's coming the new Tupac of the,
of the comedy scene
I don't know about that
well good luck with that buddy
thank you
and I hope everything goes well
and
I don't know who's gonna be
the next interview
I just wanted to do
this is an emergency podcast
we got this
yeah
so I'm glad
whatever interview this is on
I love you bud
and I hope all is well
and I'm
I'm glad we here we can hug we can hug it I love you, bud. And I hope all is well. And I'm glad we, here, we can hug.
We can hug it out.
Love you, man.
With mics.
This is fun.
Touching mics.
We're touching mics.
All right, buddy.
Have a good day.
Hopefully come out.
You going to watch the show?
I'm coming to the show.
We're going to be at the show.
All right.
Love you, man.
Love you, too.
Here's the next interview.
Yee!
Next up on the interview
hour, we have Spafford
from Arizona.
These guys are coming up. These guys are
one of the bigger jam bands
in the scene.
Hey, Chris, play some music while we're
pimping out Spafford.
I've been
hearing about these guys for a lot.
You know, Kunj, my buddy,
used to manage them, and you know,
when he likes a band, he pimps the shit out of them.
And so,
got to finally listen to their music
at summer camp,
and I was,
yeah, it was really good.
These guys always have a different show.
Their fans love them.
It was a great interview.
We talk about how hard it is to keep a band around and
how hard it is to
not listen to the noise
of the internet trolls who
sometimes talk shit.
I hope you enjoy it.
I hope you enjoy the show.
Ladies and gentlemen, Spafford. Leave the light on for me, lady So in the darkness I can find my way home
Leave your light on for me, lady
Let me know that I'm not alone
Five years have passed.
And we're fucking here, guys.
Booyah, Kashach.
We're with these motherfuckers they call Spafford.
So tell me about the scene.
What were you guys, how'd you start your career in Arizona?
Because there's not a lot of markets you could play.
So were you...
Well, we were in a small mountain town called Prescott, Arizona.
There was a street called Whiskey Row and it had 10 bars on it.
So we would find ourselves playing 10 nights in a month,
every single bar,
just Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
Saturday,
Friday,
you know,
like every,
and then we got a residency like Wednesday at the local,
like hip hop club,
you know,
and people would come down and shoot pool.
And were you singing or it's all instrumental singing?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean,
right off the bat, we were always, you know know just playing songs and playing songs that we wrote and like
you know throwing some covers in there and stuff but it was it was always a majority like originals
you know so weren't you guys doing like half like you had jobs and shit oh yeah like what were your
jobs oh my god i've done everything from gold plating, you know, carny jewelry.
I was a chef.
I was a dishwasher at the same place where he was a chef.
Yeah.
Yeah. I mean, I've done weird random jobs just to keep it.
So what was the most, what was yours?
I sold pens and magnets.
Pens and magnets?
Yeah. Like key chains, you know, like if you go into like a body shop in like
tuscaloosa alabama and like you know you get your car worked on and the dude like hands you uh uh
like uh uh your keys back yeah he's got his little keychain on it says like bob's auto body like i
was a guy that called him up from phoenix and was like hey i saw you this shit cheap. It's like Better Call Saul up in this little
fucking dude. That's what I was going for.
Jesus Christ. It was almost as
shady. How did you make money?
Did you get hourly or it was commissions?
Yeah, it was all commission. So you were making commissions
off pens and shit? Yeah.
Yeah.
That's cool. So you did that
and you're kind of like, what was the
moment where you're like, ah, fuck this. We need to really
start doing this full time. Did you meet anybody or like who brought you in?
There was a first, I was just talking about this the other day. There was a first gig that we got playing outside of Arizona, which was opening up for Particle at the Hard Rock Cafe in Vegas. And for us, this was like the biggest gig of our life. I think only maybe 120 people walked through the door that night.
But for us, this was the biggest.
And you're playing with legends.
Only maybe 120 people walked through the door that night.
But for us, this was the biggest.
And you're playing with legends.
First time that we ever got out of Arizona.
And for us, it was like it set the bar.
That was when Red joined the band.
And it was like, we're like, let's do this.
Like, let's get on the road and like, just keep going.
And we kind of went back to school for two years right at that time as well.
So we were just doing school. Where were you guys going to school?
Local community college in Prescott.
Jordan and I were attending classes together.
And yeah, Pike Community College.
How long did you last?
Two years.
Nice.
Yeah, we went through music school together.
For us, and then we left.
Yeah, we formed Spafford a couple years prior.
And then we decided to go back to school together.
And we went and we played in bands and stuff like that.
And did the theater and did pit orchestra and stuff like that.
Before the school was really involved. And on the weekends, we were like bands and stuff like that and did like the theater and did like pit orchestra and stuff like that for the school was really involved.
And on the weekends, we were just going playing Spafford.
And that was 2014 to 2016 or, you know.
So who is inspiring you to play this type of music?
Like, what were you listening to at that time?
Yeah, like this area, this time in your life.
I mean, a lot of it's like the school stuff, going to school and like learning jazz and learning playing in a gospel
band or like i played in a country band brian brian played everybody played in all these other
random bands and then we started like really studying music and i really think that's like
what pushed it the most is like studying music theory and studying like all different types of
music to like just kind of come up with this like amalgamation of like whatever we produce now
because i we played in a church band too for years i mean we played in we worked for an american
evangelical so what kind of what kind of church music was it jars of clay like rocking i mean it
was killer music i mean like yeah you know like yeah great bro you kidding i mean like i was
learning that i'm like oh my god this is for real. Complicated.
So it was giving that sort of aspect.
And that sort of influenced our songwriting as well.
All those little things throughout the years have always.
But we always loved going up there and just setting a groove
and just let it ride.
Let the music speak for itself.
Who knows what tonalities, who's going to use what,
and where it's going to take us.
But let's just have fun with it. Let the music speak for itself. So knows what tonalities, who's going to use what and like where it's going to take us. But like,
let's just have fun with it.
Let the music speak for itself.
So we always,
you know,
that's first and foremost.
Yeah.
We're going to go into this whole,
cause I'm new to this jam world and how you guys don't even like look at
each other and you guys already know what the fuck you guys are doing.
You know,
like it's just kind of,
is that planned?
Like when you go into these improvised things in your sets,
cause everything is kind of like,
kind of know when you're like,
I don't know.
As I've been talking more jam artists and stuff,
like there's a part like,
all right,
let's see what happens here.
Is that kind of how it is with your band?
Or do you guys just free wheel the whole thing?
You don't know what the fuck's going on.
I mean,
every,
I mean,
yeah.
I mean,
there's like,
there's sections to our songs,
obviously that could sound different night by night,
depending on how we're feeling.
You know,
is there always a quarterback or is like everyone takes,
no, everybody kind of, yeah, everybody takes it. That that's that's the point of the band that's that's the point of the improv is like we say whoever's speaking let them speak you know so
how do you know so what's the what's the what's the thing like you got to use your ears yes so
like or like is it like kind of like i want this one guys or like yeah i mean that happens or you can hear it or i know if he's like
okay i want to go now like all right let me lay back let brian do his thing or like you just hear
something it's like a second nature thing it's like you hear a note and you're like oh oh i hear
all these things okay maybe he's meaning to do this and maybe later you have the conversation
like that was not what i meant to do at all.
Yeah.
That was really cool.
And I'm glad that you went there.
So,
but with this whole jam scene,
can you go there again?
Or do you have to like,
you can't do that piece again.
Right.
Are they,
do they get pissed?
Like,
do your fans get pissed when you start doing shit you've already done?
No,
I mean,
I don't,
I don't think so.
Well,
I mean,
like if we were just playing these songs and there was no jam and they were just solo sections then wouldn't they be less
like interesting than what we're doing right now yeah so like so like but what about say like i
don't know because you see i like i i hang out i'm close friends with the pigeons fans and i
are pigeons and i see their fan page and i heard you guys have like a spaff nerds or something yeah that's like 10 000 deep who are studying your your set list like
they're ravenous group they're fucking crazy i saw some shit i'm like damn these homies are on
these guys dick and uh like it's crazy i said it now you guys don't worry uh so like is there pressure because of that like do
you watch that shit well look social media itself has like its place in the world like that where
everybody's trying to figure out so social media like that's you know being a fan club that's for
us and like loving the band like we wouldn't want anything different than whose idea was a fan club
was it fans absolutely yeah yeah shit is nuts yeah. Yeah, I mean, we couldn't stop them.
They're like, we need a place to talk.
And we're like, okay.
And we've stayed out of it.
We're not in there.
Didn't you start reading all that shit?
I've read it and been depressed.
Oh, I've read it and been depressed before.
What's the most depressing thing someone said?
Well, I mean, they ask some questions or they say some things that you you know like you know they can hit a soft spot sometimes you know and it's and it's
fine because it's when were you i guess it's genuine um when you said fuck this i'm gonna
listen to this well i mean we had a drummer change last year so i think that that arose like a bunch
of stuff you know and we just kind of had to like we just had to kind of like you know go through
the motions of nobody knows what was going on with us at the time. And, you know,
and we kind of had to just keep this thing alive and keep moving through it.
And there was, there was some negativity that was going on.
And it was, I think it was around that time that I decided to just, you know,
not have anything to do with it anymore. Just not, not to look at it, you know,
because we just kind of had to put our head down and keep this thing alive.
It's, you know, this thing isn't run by social media.
It's run by this four group of guys that are sitting right here and it's our lives and our experiences and everything that's being
affected sometimes and you know life throws you curveballs you know for anyone so who's the new
drummer boy mr cameron laforest all right here we go interrogation motherfucker let's see if you're
worth this okay so like how's that pressure like knowing that this band is already here
you know and like you how'd you guys meet first where'd you meet him online or he was he was a How is that pressure? Knowing that this band is already here.
How did you guys meet first?
Where did you meet him?
Online?
He was a local.
He was one guy in Arizona.
That's easy.
There was one guy in Arizona that could get the job.
Okay, and it was him.
You already knew that.
It was the only one guy in Arizona that could get the job.
Okay, so that's a lot of pressure on your hands.
We've seen him grow up.
He's the baby?
I started playing.
Well, we've seen him, and he used to play in a fish cover band believe it or not and they were sneaking him into the bars and this kid's 17
years old and he would come up to prescott when we lived in prescott and they would come out because
we would go see him and we're like man this kid is just amazing he's got glasses or something
they're like beating the shit out of these drums we're like who is this kid isn't it amazing like some of these kids like taz you ever played with taz before no not yet like
15 but we know you're 17 like yeah it's like amazing to like even like i had a he was with
he was talking about bruce and bruce is like at 10 years old he knew that that was taz is going
to be his guitar player wow like people just have it in them. So were you touring heavy before this?
So we were touring heavy.
We were really getting into touring.
And then Cameron came along
and we didn't skip one beat.
So that was when the touring really picked up for us.
So we literally were building all this stuff
and then took Cameron on the road with us.
How do you feel about all the shit talk
about the drumming on the Spaff nerds?
You know, I haven't really paid attention to any of that.
I was briefly on the page for maybe two weeks tops.
And that was like, I was just discovering the band
like probably two or three weeks beforehand.
And I just like checked out the page.
He's like, who are these people?
They called me.
And then they called me and they're like, hey, do you want to play? And I was like, sure. And he's like, okay just like checked out the page. He's like, who are these? They called me, they called me and then they called me and they're like,
Hey, do you want to play?
And I was like,
sure.
And he's like,
okay,
you should leave the page.
Yeah.
I was like,
I'm probably not really paying attention to it.
So,
but that's also where our fuel comes from too.
You know,
it is absolutely.
And I think that we've figured out a way to turn that into like the correct
energy for us.
No,
totally.
It's,
it's,
it's both.
You know, you need the motivation. for us. No, totally. It's, it's, it's both. You know,
you need the motivation.
You need the people behind you.
We don't want them to stop doing that.
What are we going to tell them?
Hey,
everybody chill out.
Like,
no,
every time we see them,
we always tell them,
go,
keep going.
You know,
like it's,
it's fine.
Let's get the word out about the band,
you know,
it's how they're doing it.
Nice.
Tell me about this 60 minute fucking album you made.
You made an album called,
that was one,
one song, 60 minutes.
Go ahead. Come on.
We went to a water park.
We were busting our asses
catching Cam up.
Four or five days a week in the studio.
At a water park?
Before the water park.
Let me start before this.
We were working.
We spent more than four days
four hours at a water park
every day
just to sit
just to sit
and talk about music
guys we need to figure out
this record
let's go to Raging Waters
right now
hold that thought
I'm hitting the lazy road
Phoenix is
Phoenix is really hot
in the summer
and we were spending
four or five days a week
in the rehearsal room
and like
it's like 115 degrees outside
and we're just practice
practice practice it's all we were doing and like one day we're just like every day okay today we're going
to a water park like no practice today we all just like went to the water park like we're like four
adult four adult men were surrounded by like children with their parents and like didn't
matter at all we just like really like bonded and like
laughed and had a lot of fun and then the next day we went and i always have my computer up and i'm
always recording and we're just like hey do you guys just want to jam and we just started playing
and like i had pressed record and then we finished we're like wow that was like really cool and we
just kept going and we kept recording some other stuff kept playing and went back and listened to
it we all listened to it we're like this to it. We're like, this is amazing.
This is like an album.
It's like little songs in between each thing.
And we should just put this out.
People need to hear this.
Yeah.
And how was the response?
How do you find, were you not thinking about a single?
Did you cut parts of it to throw into, say, jam on?
Will they play the whole 60-minute song?
I hope that they will.
I mean, the point was, there this like norm that's happening now like they're not even
albums don't even really matter no it's just put out a single because that's the only thing that
people have an attention span for and it's like it's just not what we do yeah we're just non we
just we're not going to conform to that you know like so we just put out the track we were thinking about splitting this thing up because it had sections to it no no one hour 59 minute 59 you know like let's put it out there and let's
just see what happens and people started time stamping it on their own saying this section was
it was it created so how's the recording process for an hour song do you guys take breaks per part
or did you just like no it was one hour we just jammed we just improv for an hour straight and
then that was just it and then we just ended it and we were like and then we got done and we were
like cool let's go smoke cigarette like that was sweet like went back like all right let's go work
on like this song whatever and then like when jordan gets the recordings was on it no but then
we just get done like you know we started listening to it and it was just this piece that just fit an
hour long and we're like let's just do it how many times did you do it once well it was just this piece that just fit an hour long. And we're like, let's just do it.
How many times did you do it?
Once?
If we did it, we couldn't do it again.
Get the fuck out of here.
Really?
We couldn't do it again.
That was special.
It was its own thing that only lasted in time for that.
The way that it...
I had no idea that anything was recording.
Yeah.
It was like, who wants to start us off?
Somebody pick a key. Somebody pick a tempo and we all oh i started i started a riff in g minor
and that wasn't even the key that it wound up that's the improv i mean i'm like his root note
was b flat you know i mean it was something else like i mean it just didn't that it was literally
that's what the improv is as i went in thinking okay i'm gonna start here and you know what he heard was something different and that was why it developed into the
why it did so how do you um if it's all improv now are you forced to play that for your set
no we've never been forced to play that ever again yeah you're running your ship it's just
that is just like a little like an easterter egg and for us you know and like we
are looking forward to doing like more of those you know we want to save so much money yeah dude
this is our own little we don't believe we have to switch together jordan does all the mixing and
mastering like on stuff like that like you know how much money did you spend on the record which
one the original like the actual album for amusement only that we did this year or a Baculous?
Nothing.
I mean, we just threw it up on Spotify.
That was Jordan's MacBook and all the mics set up.
And you recorded it at your practice spot.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What are they?
We call it the pound.
Yeah.
Because a bunch of stray cats that run around there.
Oh, get the fuck out.
Yeah.
And tacos.
Super fast.
So what's the next idea for the next one record?
What are you going to do?
You going to do the same concept or what are you thinking?
Well,
I mean like that,
like that's some,
that's what we do live.
Yeah.
So like,
that's kind of the idea is to let people know,
like,
this is kind of like what we do live within each song or like this could
happen.
I mean,
you know,
the fact that we did that on the studio was,
was awesome.
You know, It was crazy.
So normally you'll just play one song for a set.
No, we can write four up there and we could say,
if the first one's going to go, let it.
It's tight.
You'll know when it's...
And it may not.
It may not.
And that's it.
And then move on to the next one.
If that one goes, you know, it's just that language that's happening in there.
And sometimes you can really feel like last night.
Like, you know, we go through a jam, like really push hard in the first section, you know, and then all of a sudden it like pulls back for a second.
You can feel we're getting into this next phase of what it really, now we're on the spaceship, you know.
Like we just boarded with this last seven minutes., now we're on the spaceship, you know, like,
like we are,
we just boarded with this last seven minutes,
but now we're jets.
Now we're here.
So now it's an autopilot and we can really sit here and take this for as long
as we want.
And who knows where it's going to end up.
Oh my God.
So who's singing mostly you?
We all sing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Who's singing mostly? You?
We all sing.
Yeah?
Yeah.
It is halftime at the Andy Fresco interview hour.
Welcome back to an episode of Rider Review with your host Ari Finling.
I actually got a copy of Andy Fresco's rider from a show he did in Charleston,
South Carolina. Let me just read it to you. It's pretty weird.
Number one, 500
packs of Dunkaroos,
a snack from 1994.
One VHS copy of
The Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan.
There's no VHS
player on here, so there's no VCR.
Don't know how he's going to play that.
Think he just wants it. Unlimited Capri Suns. Okay, you're not a child. One Sibian. Pretty
weird, dude. Three Hula Hoops. 57 Highlights Magazines. Pretty sure this is the weirdest
thing I've ever seen. One Unicycle, 12 cartons of cigarettes,
99 Trojan fire and ice condoms for God knows what,
69 pre-rolled joints,
and a Christmas tree in quotes,
no matter what time of year.
Great job, Andy.
You're fucking weird.
This has been another episode of Ride or Review.
I'm your host, Ari Finling.
Good night.
How hard is it to like, you know, we're all, it's a business.
You know, it's like, and seeing, you know, working with people like that's helped us with our career in the beginning.
And like, there's like stepping when you have to like keep on moving forward.
And like, there's, there's like stepping when you have to like, keep on moving forward.
How hard is it to like, say, you know, I need to, I'm looking for someone else in this position. And, you know, in that just like heartbreaking, it's, it feels like, you know, I mean, it's,
it's happened to me.
It's happened to you.
It's happened to everybody in our lives because that's just what happens.
And yeah, it's a tough thing to do, but.
But like, yeah, it's like, hopefully they get it that it's like, we're looking out for the bigger picture, you know like yeah it's like hopefully they get it that it's like we're looking out for
with the bigger picture you know and it's well this is a really powerful thing you know and and
when we created it and we weren't sure of the grand scope of it's of how much power it harnesses
and it's and we try and be gentle with it it's very fragile and you know we do the best that
we can yeah but we set out here to create music for ourselves,
to create music for ourselves that wasn't given to us in Arizona at the time.
And with all the support and everything, we just got pushed on the road by other bands.
And here we are.
But that dream has never stopped.
No.
And all the business gets in the way.
And all that bullshit starts to, or social media and all this stuff.
But like what's really going on is we're four guys that are just writing music from the heart and singing it from the heart.
And we just want to go play music and give people music.
So y'all married? Got girlfriends? Married?
Married.
I got a girlfriend.
Married.
Married.
So let's talk about that. How hard is that?
I got married on the road
september uh 2016 and when i came back i got fired from a job that i was working at and i went on
tour with spafford instead of going on my honeymoon oh we got back we got back two years later which
was you know three months ago you know or whatever and you've been getting hard for two years straight from this?
We've been going for about two years.
Ever since Cam came in the band or a little bit before that,
we were going pretty hard.
January 2017.
And yeah, we've just been going hard ever since.
So how hard is that?
I mean, it's...
Do you guys get in fights over little things?
Is it tough?
Do you have kids?
Anyone have kids?
No kids.
That's good.
That would be a lot yeah no i mean i i thankfully have a woman on my arms that doesn't give me shit she supports me and i mean i'll spend a week practicing my guitar in the other room and she
won't even bug me that's great so so it's about communication it's all about communication you
know it's like i mean with umphrey's guys you know we've learned from them and you know robbie over at umphreys crew he says like you call your wife every single day and we do rob is a good
guy right we call every single day and like those tips those things like have helped us have our
relationships out on the road and maintain the band the other guys like all umphreys and all
the bands that have wives and stuff we're like oh my god they can do it we can do it too and you
just see that there's you know a way through this crazy touring schedule and be
able to have a very intense relationship with a woman you know as well as four other guys or the
12 other guys that you're on the road with yeah i mean you're married like 10 times over with
everybody yeah it's like especially with the band like you're married to each other and you can't fuck each other. You know,
I can't have sex
to like calm the releurs.
Right on.
I mean.
Dude,
we just all just fucked.
It was tight.
We got,
we were,
it was makeup sex.
It was an orgy, dude.
There was a time
when we went skinny dipping
in Los Angeles.
All y'all just foreign.
We just said,
this is it.
Like we're doing it.
We're going to go out there
and get the dicks out
magnetize our dicks
try to make a new record
we didn't go very far
we haven't really talked about it since then
sorry about that guys
do you guys ever test around with psychedelics
or anything do you guys take acid
or mushrooms
I mean I have enough in my day
but like every like experiment
on like oh let's all take l and do a show no no i mean no i mean i've tried to take out play my
guitar when i was 17 years old and it turned into an elephant's trunk so yeah hold on explain that
explain the whole story oh god yeah that was basically i wound up sitting at the piano the
rest of the night and just playing with somebody else, and we made the most beautiful music I think I've ever played,
still to this day.
If you could tell yourselves, you could tell younger you,
after all the things you learned in the last 10, 11 years
about the industry and with a clear head,
what would you tell yourself?
Just keep doing it.
You're doing the right thing. Yeah? Yeah. Did you ever have doubts you were doing the right thing? Oh, come on. Of course. Well? Just keep doing it. You're doing the right thing.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Did you ever have doubts you were doing the right thing?
Oh, come on, of course.
Well, tell me about it.
Like, what was the moment you had the biggest doubt?
We were driving from a show to go to, we were in Mammoth Lakes.
Mammoth Lakes, yeah, yeah.
And we were headed to Northern California to go play
a music festival with Steve Kimmock.
And this was like now
the biggest gig of our lives.
And our transmission,
we weren't supposed to make the, you know, you come into the fork
in the road and it's like, you know, go around the mountain
or go right to go over the pass
and we missed it. So we went
right on the pass and our transmission dropped
on our bus at the time
we had a huge we had a 7.3 turbo fucking power stroke whatever i'm not a car guy i play guitar
um you know and uh 27 yeah 27 passenger whatever we gutted it we put ikea bunk beds in it and tv
in like all this shit and like there was no air conditioning. This thing sucked,
you know?
And we,
we toured around for years with that thing,
you know?
And,
and it finally,
it could put,
it went down and we're stuck on the top of this pass.
And as soon as it went down,
I was like sleeping in the back.
And as soon as it went down,
I just,
I grabbed my wallet and started walking and started hitchhiking right away.
Cause I knew that we were,
we were done.
Yeah.
Jordan was with me.
We took off and we wound up doing this whole freaking thing,
getting the thing down and whatever.
I mean, this was a mess.
The bus wound up staying in Mammoth Lake
for the next three months.
Did you have to cancel shows?
Well, we wound up making it to Lake...
What's the lake?
Fuck.
Lake Powell.
Lake Tahoe or whatever.
Yeah, Tahoe.
Trucking area.
And renting all the shit and going back to where
our vehicle was and getting a u-haul and getting a minivan and now driving another three hours now
we're on our way to um to make 20 to the festival to make 2,500 bucks yeah it's 2,500 would have
like kind of broke us even with all the shit you know maybe a couple grand we were thrown into this
thing you know like oh shit it was a bad week yeah like we're not making money with this thing
anyway yeah yeah um but at least that's gonna pay your expenses yeah we went all the way up there into this thing, you know, like, oh shit, it was a bad week. Yeah. Like we're not making money with this thing anyway. Yeah.
But at least that's going to pay your expenses.
Yeah. We went all the way up there and that guy didn't pay us.
Was it, no one showed up to the fest?
Oh no, people were there and, and, and, and sound guy, we were, we showed up there.
The sound guy was like, I'm not turning it on because the promoter was, wasn't paying
anybody.
Somehow I got involved with this promoter.
And we were nobody.
You don't fight him?
No, but I told him that he's going to pay.
Steve came up, $15,000, however much money he owed for the gig.
I said, I don't even care if you're going to give me the money.
You're going to get him the money.
You're going to turn the shit back on because there's 500 people here that want to see some music.
And they're not giving music. What is this is unity festival look at you mr politician
i like it got came out the money shit goes back on we did our set okay right jerry joseph kim
wally they all did they did the gig it was a great night but we never got paid i'm texting this guy
the promoter give me the money bro like give me because he was like
dude i will pay you i'll pay you like you know like it's thanks for helping me out but i'll pay
you this and that you know and i'm like bro you know this is a two weeks later he sends me a
picture of like a town sign that says like you know maryville or something like that and he goes
bro i can't pay you because my town burned down. And the picture was like Maryville, like this thing.
And the whole town is burnt behind it.
And I'm like, what?
This guy's town?
You know, this didn't happen.
So I went on Google, typed Maryville fire.
And it was like, oh, the great fire of Maryville in 1994.
And there's the picture that the guy sent me.
So I knew that we were never getting the money.
This guy's face has never showed up on the industry ever again,
ever, anywhere.
He was done.
You know, we took the hit for it.
Transmission cost us $3,500.
We didn't get paid the 25.
All the U-Hauls, everything.
Jordan and Chuck, we fly back home from San Francisco.
These guys stay a few days in Mammoth to try and get a vehicle.
They take the U-Haul all the way back.
The vehicle's stuck in in mammoth to try and get a vehicle they take the u-haul all the way back the vehicle stuck in in a mammoth for i mean this was we met two months after that second time that this didn't happen to us oh yeah we met that we i mean we've had car troubles like
i mean we could say we could do that week that was that's your transportation issues. That's what we could tell our past selves is just buy a 15
passenger G3500.
Buy that.
And that's it. Do not try and get anything bigger.
Don't try and put beds in it. Don't try and sleep
in it. No fridges. No nothing. It's something
with air conditioning and something that works.
You're an independent band. How expensive is this
fucking dream?
It's expensive.
We only ever took anything that we ever made and we
put it back into the business for how many years 10 still absolutely fucking crazy we're putting
on crew members before we're putting money in our pockets because we're we we need the help you know
we need to be in the vehicles that are going to get us there we need to make sure that people are
comfortable and yeah you know these guys are fucking expensive you know yeah exactly but we're
not looking to do this thing for a couple of years.
We're making a career out of this thing.
We don't know where we're headed, but we're on our way.
Yeah, what's the dream then?
You're looking at it.
Yeah, this.
We are doing it.
Fuck, yeah.
So living in the moment.
This is it.
This is it.
I mean, where's it going to go?
We're going on tour?
Yeah, we don't need anything else.
This is the dream.
So maybe that's what it is. we need to stop like thinking about tomorrow perspective and thinking about just this moment this is it i mean we're sitting in your hotel
room on jam cruise right now yeah just hanging out yeah you're a dude dude it's crazy man thanks
for being on the show yeah i can't wait to see you guys. You guys have one more show, right?
Tonight?
Tomorrow.
Oh, fuck yes.
I'm going to take some mushrooms and watch the show.
I heard it's real nice on mushrooms.
Yeah, you guys.
Oh, one more thing.
Sorry, sorry.
Light show, light show.
Yes, Ben Factor.
Yeah, you had one light guy.
I heard a story about an old light guy that you named the band after.
Yes, Chuck Spafford Johnson.
Chuck Spafford, okay.
Yes, he's like our fifth member,
and I guess Ben Factor, who's doing lights,
is our sixth member.
I mean, everybody who works for us,
everybody who's doing this thing is a part of it.
So let's end on that.
How important is light show with your type of music?
Oh, it's super important.
It's like a sixth member.
I was the first light guy.
I used to have a panel of switches,
and I would tie the house light.
It was just one.
This is a bar.
And then I had a disco ball behind me, and I I would tie the house light it was just one you know this is a bar and then I had the disco ball behind me
and I would turn off
the house light
while I was like
holding a note
like soloing
and I would hold the note
and I'd come over
and I'd pop the house light off
and then put on the disco light
in the fog machine
and then go back
to soloing again
yeah yeah yeah
so when Chuck showed up
I was like hey
I just need you to flip
these switches
because I can't flip
these switches anymore.
And that evolved into all this stuff.
Very fascinating.
Boys, stay humble.
Keep kicking ass.
Thank you.
Don't let the groupies ruin your relationships.
No.
And wear condoms until you want to have babies.
Love you guys.
Have fun.
Be safe.
Thanks for being on the show, guys.
Thank you, dude.
Love you, man.
Love you, dude.
Be safe.
Thanks for being on the show, guys.
Thank you, dude.
Love you, man.
Love you, dude.
And now, as a tribute to our old co-host, Yeti,
the team at the World Saving Podcast created a little montage in his honor
from all the episodes he's on.
Thanks for all the memories, buddy.
And now, attend a moment where Yeti gives Andy a handy...
Yeti, you're a single man.
Give me that pipe. I'm not high enough for this.
Okay, smoke this.
You're half chub going on talking about this thing.
We are fucking on to something here.
Yeah, you can't have that big of a dick. You've seen my dick.
Just lay down on the ground and just feel what's going on around you.
Can you brush your teeth?
What do you think?
What are you doing? I have no money.
Why are you doing this?
Actually,
damn. That's a good one.
Oh, fuck. Yeah, dude.
This is good. I like this.
Ooh. Ooh.
Damn.
Okay. Damn. We are so poly. This is Damn. Okay.
Damn.
We are so poly.
This is 2018, fucking.
Do you think ghosts fuck?
Yeah.
Ooh.
Ooh.
Oh, Andy.
Yes.
Yes.
Doesn't matter what's in your mind.
You're just basically going for the feeling of the orgasm.
Maybe you have to close your eyes and just make music.
I firmly believe that the energy that sustains our consciousness,
you and I being able to connect,
you and I going through our moments and everything,
and our emotions and all of that is built off of that.
Are we going to document this?
Uh-huh.
I may have a question. Like, no words. this? Uh. Like, no words.
Just, just. No, no words at all. Yeah, this is not, this is not about language.
Yeah, but so you've got, so I mean
do everything, do. Just like
No, no audio, no
Coptic vocalization.
And it can't have any words. It can't have chanting either.
Okay. Okay.
Well, that's why you and I are in love.
No, it's got to be more primal. Oh. Okay. Well, that's why you and I are in love. No, it's gotta be more primal.
Oh,
my God.
Fuck. Fuck? Yeah.
Fuck. Fuck.
This is the greatest moment.
Cum is coming out of my dick
and it's like flying out of my...
Fuck. Fuck?
Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Alright.
There you have it.
Thanks for being on the show, Spafford.
Thanks for popping in, Yeti. It was nice to talk.
I really haven't talked to him since the breakup.
He shot me a text when I was in Boise.
I was like, okay, let's have a talk.
Of course, I wanted to record it.
I just want everyone to know my life, what's going on
but I'm glad we got some closure
thanks for being on the show Yeti
love you buddy, no hard feelings
I'll always be there for you
and I know you'll always be there for me
so I love you bud
but fuck
man I just got back
I kind of fucked up
I just got back from Mexico, Sean's wedding, which
was so beautiful. And seeing Sean in his moment was very special. Congratulations, you two.
It was just a good time. I had my flight got canceled. So I got there literally like two
hours before the wedding. There's all this shitty weather out
in the Midwest and stuff, but yeah, I did a little cocaine for the first time in a year. God fucking
Mexico. I swear to God, there's something in the tacos and, uh, you know, the burritos and the
fucking beach and like just the vacation vibes that make you just want to do a bag of Coke.
But I did it. I feel like shit. I felt like shit yesterday. I was like, I got to sleep. So I took
a little Xanax and fucking slept for like 14 hours. I know I feel good, but fuck. It's okay.
You fuck up every now and then, but I don't know. Coke is weird, dude. You do it when you're drunk.
Well, I don't know if everyone does it, but when I get wasted and I day drink and they're like,
oh, let's go out. It's only seven. I'm like, fuck. All right, here we go. So we got some
shitty cocaine and some shitty Adderall. And I just, you know, like an idiot, I fucking
snorted the Adderall. I felt like on top of the world. And the next morning I felt like utter
shit. So I learned my lesson. Probably won't be doing that again for a while. And it's all about,
I think, you know, I don't,'s all about don't abuse shit, you know.
Do it every now and then, it's fine.
But, like, feel it.
Feel the replications of it, if that's the right word.
And, you know, go, you know, learn from it, you know.
That's the thing about getting through addiction.
But, yeah, I did it and whatever.
It's all good.
But we had a great fucking time.
Have you guys ever, we smuggled in some mushrooms, I did it and whatever. It's all good. We had a great fucking time.
Have you guys ever... We smuggled in some
mushrooms, which was fucking awesome.
This is the first time I ever did this.
I didn't know that citric acid
really helps with the digestion
of the mushrooms. You don't get the bubble guts.
I had a friend
who was at the wedding
and was like, okay, let's try this out. So we brought like
half ounce of mushrooms and we just dosed the whole wedding party. It was the day after we
got on a boat and we were just circling Cabo and it was so fun and it was really nice. And then I,
have you ever went snorkeling on mushrooms that was the coolest
shit i've ever been a part of i was you know at first i'm nervous to snorkel you know especially
on drugs because you know you hyperventilate or when you're in that mask and shit like
you forget that you have to learn a different way of breathing you know you're not breathing
from your nose and when you're fucking high um sometimes you
forget that there's other ways of doing things you know and then we get all anxious and blah blah i'm
gonna die i'm gonna die oh my god but really you just gotta take a step back and like relearn things
and it got me through that fear of fucking snorkeling because when i was a kid my mom
we went snorkeling and i don't know what happened But I was so fucking scared
This big ass stingray started swimming after me
And I was fucking frightened
I'm like, oh no, no, no, no, no, no
I don't want to do this
I was like five years old
And I've never done it since
So I did it
I took some mushrooms
And I just hung out with this
Like it was a pool of fish. I really, you know, like when
you wear those, those, um, 3d glasses or like the infrared glasses, when you're looking at something
3d and you see all these like fish and like, Oh, that's what it felt like. And it was so peaceful
and it was, it was just cool. I was there for hours, fucking snorkeling and looking at fish
and realizing
we're not alone.
There's a different world
in the water.
Maybe we want to
not want to smoke
as much
because the littering
and shit, that's just all going in the ocean.
Plastic.
There's a whole fucking community of creatures that we don't get to see every day.
But it was dope.
I had a great time.
And then I got to get to know Sean's family on mushrooms.
Talking to Linda Eccles.
She's so sweet.
She's like my mom.
But, you know, like I said, I was on the mushrooms.
And, you know, at first when you're on the mushrooms, you're like,
yeah, I want to get to know this person I never got to know.
And then you forget you're high.
And so I'm having conversations about Sean's childhood
and, like, just getting to know who she is.
And, you know know then you go through
these ups and downs of like oh shit I am I'm high as fuck talking to Linda Eccles
about the theory of life I'm like I gotta settle it down settle it down but you ever tried you
maybe try going to a family vacation or family reunion on mushrooms.
Don't take too much where you're like, oh God, look it, grandma is fucking twirling.
But like, take like a little microdose and go to the family reunion and just get to know everybody.
You know, some people are afraid to talk to when you're just sober.
Maybe you think that they don't understand you
or they have different values than you.
But that's what I love about the mushrooms
is it really opens you up to being vulnerable
and being acceptive to new things.
Like if it's talking to a parent
or
talking
or trying new things
like I fucking snorkeled
guys
I fucking snorkeled
it was badass
but the wedding was great
Cabo
seeing Sean happy
and nervous
was
you know
I could tell
they're gonna last forever
but uh
it's just been so much fun
but um
I'm on a break
I'm in LA right now
starting my new record.
I got like four songs in.
I'm writing with some LA folk.
And then just getting down with the nitty gritty.
But other than that, I'm having fun.
We got Mountain Jam in a couple days, which is going to be fucking fun.
Two nights.
I'm playing at 1 a.m. to 3 a.m.
They finally gave me the late night slot on the big stage,
so I'm going to fucking tear that up.
And then we got a day show the next day,
and then it's Father's Day.
And I just sold my house, actually,
so I won't be able to go see my dad on Father's Day,
which I'm bummed about
Because I have to move everything out of it
By the 18th
So
Man change is weird
We're creatures of habits
I was sitting at my house
A couple days ago
Or my old house now
And of course it's got it
Life is testing you.
Do you really want to sell this house?
You know, there's fucking fireworks
blasting off of my background
or off my patio, you know,
because I'm downtown,
so you could see the full 360 view of Kansas City
and just fucking pimp.
I'm like, fuck, this is really nice
and this is really cheap.
Why am I trying to buy something more expensive
but um you know sometimes you gotta take a chance and sometimes you just gotta fucking
you know keep progressing and keep following your gut you know my gut's telling me to move so
i'm gonna move and i believe i'm going to, Colorado. Yeah, I've been looking at houses out there.
It's been nice.
I'm a little nervous.
It's more expensive, like I said.
But I'm trying.
I'm trying to figure all that out.
I'm also worried about the coke out there in Denver.
Everyone's on coke out there.
That's what I'm kind of worried about.
I don't want to fucking get caught up in it.
But I'm stronger than I was a couple years ago.
If it was a couple years ago, three years a couple years ago three years ago i bought that house in kansas city the reason why i didn't buy
in denver then was you know it was dick to coke or abusing coke so everyone and their mothers is on
the fucking drug out there so um gotta just say no learn how to say no but yeah i think i'm gonna
make the move to denver i've been looking at houses. Yeah, it's going to be fun.
I'm excited.
I'm worried about the altitude.
I always get fucking sick out there.
I don't know, maybe because I'm just partying hard,
but I always have fucking headaches.
I got to figure that out.
Maybe get altitude sickness.
I just got to get more used to it.
But other than that, I'm just rambling today, guys.
Just trying to make a new record
We got some really awesome interviews
That I'm doing this summer
Because we're opening for a lot of bigger bands
Just got asked to play with Green Sky Bluegrass
Going on tour with them for a little bit
I'm interviewing the Wood Brothers
I'm excited about that one
I got Mahali I'm interviewing I met Brothers. I'm excited about that one. I got
Mahali I'm interviewing. I met
him at, where did I meet him?
Oh yeah, Summer Camp.
He was sitting in with Big Gigantic and then
Ryan Stasek
asked us to play poker so me and him
got to shoot the shit. Well, we took
all of Ryan's money. Well, we didn't really take
it but I won. I finally won some shit.
I was talking mad shit. I'm like,
yo, fuck
off. This is all me.
It was good to meet
Mahali.
I didn't know what to expect.
I thought he was going to be a dick, and he was
cool as fuck, actually.
That's why the fucking trolls, dude.
There's so many trolls out there
who just talk shit
and talk shit
who don't even know who these people are.
They're just judging them
from the performance they're at.
Like, come on.
Let's get to know each other
before we talk shit about nobody.
And I'm at fault.
I do it too.
So let's just like learn
how to not talk shit on the internet,
you know.
But other than that,
I got a lot of tour dates running around. I'm doing FroFest in Huntsville, Utah. You know, my annual Utah
Afros are coming into the Mormon state of Utah and we're going to fucking destroy that
shit. And where else we're going? We got a little going We're going to Nantucket
Four days
Playing in St. Louis
Playing in Kansas City
Opening for Blues Traveler
And then we're on our way to
High Sierra
I've never done that before
And then we're going
And then I'm recording
We start recording our record with Dave Schools again
In San Fran
It's going to be fun
Then I fly straight to Levitate Music Fest
In Boston
Then I got a couple weeks off
And then I'm doing Peach Fest
And what else?
Buffalo again, Buffalo is wild as fuck
And then I go to Europe
Throughout August
And then I'm doing lock-in.
Oh, no doubt.
I just got booked in Sardinia, Italy at some festival.
It's supposed to be really pretty.
It's kind of like Santorini, but the Italian version of it.
Just an island, some dope shit.
But other than that, my schedule is pretty packed.
I don't know how I'm going to find a fucking house.
I'm like flying back and forth to Denver every like, you know,
whenever I have like two days off to try to find a house.
I'm just fucking, why am I doing this to myself?
You know, I overwork and then I get all fucking sad and fucking, you know,
start making philosophical blog posts and shit.
But it's okay.
We're in it for the common good.
Take care of yourselves, you know.
We could overwork each other.
It happens.
It fucking happens.
We just work and work and work and we forget about ourselves
because we're out thinking of everyone else.
So take a step back sometimes and realize that life is not all about working. It's about
enjoying it as well. And we could get through this. Mental health, I keep talking about it.
Mental health is big, guys. It's important to take care of your mind. Like yesterday,
I was on the hangover Coke and I'm starting to have these weird fucking feelings I had last year.
I'm like, yeah, now that I know what it's about, it's the dopamine level low and I'm fucking tired and sleep deprived because I haven't slept because I've been on fucking snorting Adderall and coke all night.
So take care of yourselves.
Know what drugs you need in your life.
It doesn't have to be drug, drug.
It could be sports.
It could be basketball.
It could be talking to a loved one.
All that's drug.
Stop thinking that, oh, just fucking coke,
and yeah, that's going to get me happy.
No, because other things can make you happy as well.
So find that stuff And don't abuse it
I love music
Music was my drug
And then I abused it
And how fucking working
And you know
Just fucking partying
And it tore me up
So I had to take a step back
And I feel a lot better now
So find what makes you happy
Don't abuse yourselves
Smile
And subscribe to the podcast For crying out loud We got Find what makes you happy. Don't abuse yourselves. Smile.

We're going to fight this thing.

line of notes and he sometimes goes on these rants,
like, oh, we're all fucked, we're all fucked.
So listen to the end.
Let's see what he says this time.
But I love you guys, and I will catch you next week
or whenever I see you.

Now, last night, my gateway drug to the incredible flavors of the New Orleans melting pot passed away.
The doctor, Mike Rabinick, Dr. John, is no longer with us.
The man who introduced me to the wide spectrum of New Orleans
musical styles all incorporated in his recorded vast musical legacy. With that
second line, jazz, gospel, boogie-woogie, his voodoo and rock'n'roll all mixed up
woven into the most exciting mix of music I ever heard. Where I found an
infinite space
in the clave-based grooves
and an ever-ending joy in joining in.
Where emotions came easy and still do,
his version of Indian Red
truly knocked me out this morning.
Party grooves that make me cry like a fish
and that make body parts twerk
that don't move to any other sort of mood.
So, thank you for getting me addicted, Mr. Rabanek.
May you rest in peace.
