Hi darling, you're all ready for bed?
Yeah.
Okay.
Let's get you tucked in, and then I'll read you a bedtime story.
Yeah?
How does that sound?
Come here, darling.
Let's get you all nice and snuggled.
The book I picked out for us today is called Omar on Ice, and it's by Marianne Kavalski.
Yeah.
That's Omar. Omar is a big brown bear and he has a really pretty scarf.
You see the little red and white stripes? Yeah, let's get started.
Our loved pictures. When he grew up, he was going to be an artist.
People would come from all over to have him paint their portraits. Maybe they would pay him with
candy. Omar liked red juju-bee's best.
That is Omar and he's in bed just like us and he's also reading a book.
What's the title of his book?
When I grow up.
Yeah.
What do you think Omar is thinking about?
Can you tell me?
Yeah, look, this is the little thought bubble and that's Omar with his big fancy mustache and he's painting.
and he's painting another bear.
You know, this art style reminds me of Picasso.
Yeah, with the little cubism.
Omar could not wait for school tomorrow.
Maybe Miss Fudge would hold up his picture in front of the class.
Umar's so excited for tomorrow.
When Miss Fudge passed out the paper and pencils,
Omar felt the paper's smooth surface. He loved the bright yellow of the pencil.
I'm going to draw my rock collection, said Thomas. I'm making a rocket, said Bart. I will make a
daisy, said Elsie. Elsie drew every kind of flower. She made it look so easy. Soon, the whole class
was quietly working away. Only Omar.
So it's staring at his paper.
Before we move on to the next page, you want to take a look at the drawings?
Yeah, that's Miss Fudge.
Do you see her earring?
Looks very pretty.
She's handing out the pencils.
And that must be Thomas.
Maybe that's Bart?
Yeah.
And look, Elsie is drawing her flower.
What's wrong, Omar?
Omar asked Miss Fudge.
I can't think of anything to draw, he said.
Why don't you try drawing something you love, suggested Miss Fudge.
This gave Omar an idea.
He picked up his pencil and started to draw.
Miss Fudge is going to love this, he thought.
Oh, look, Omar's working hard.
He looks so focused.
What lovely rocks, Thomas.
said Miss Fudge.
Thank you, he said Thomas.
Yeah, and that's Thomas' rock collection.
And we can see one, two, three, and four rocks on the table.
Very good.
And Miss Fudge saw Omar's drawing.
She was delighted.
Why, Omar, this picture is wonderful.
And Omar beamed.
Oh, look how smiley Omar is here.
He must be very proud.
Look, class, said Miss Fudge.
Hasn't Omar drawn a beautiful rock?
That's not a rock, said Omar.
That's my mother.
Miss Fudge looked again.
She turned the drawing this way and that.
Yes, I see her now.
Lovely.
But Omar was not happy.
Oh, Omar looks very upset here.
and he's frowning, and his pencil is snapped in half.
Miss Fudge moved down the row and held up everyone's pictures one by one.
Yeah, see, here she's holding up Elsie's drawing.
It's a little daisy, and Elsie's name is written on the paper with a heart.
So pretty.
At artist growled Omar, maybe it's your paper, said Elsie.
Maybe you need another kind of pencil, said Thomas.
It's not my pencil, it's me, said Omar.
Omar threw his drawing away.
I'm just a bad artist, he said.
Oh, I look so sad and angry,
and his friends are trying their best to console him.
That's very sweet of them.
The bell rang for recess.
And the whole class hurried outside.
Everyone laced up their skates and got on the ice.
Even, Miss Fudge.
Everyone except Omar.
Yeah, see?
That's O.C. with her coat.
And that's Thomas with his hat.
And Miss Fudge is over here.
And where's Omar?
Yeah, Omar's sitting to the side and he looks very sad.
Why aren't you skating, Omar? asked Thomas. You're the best skater in the whole class.
I don't care if I'm the best skater. I want to be the best artist, said Omar.
Elsie skated by. She did not skate as well as she drew flowers.
She fell down hard on the ice, and Omar went to help her up.
Rats, she said, I can't skate.
Maybe your skates are too big.
said Omar. It's not my skates, it's me. I'm just a bad skater.
And you're trying too hard, said Omar. The thing about skating is to have fun. It's easy when you
don't worry. Watch. Look off slowly, gliding like a bird in the sky. Then he skated backwards
like a sailboat against the wind. Yeah, look. Omar's skating and he's gliding, and he's gliding.
And look, look how well he's doing.
When he picked up speed, he zoomed fast like a car.
Vroom!
Yeah, look, he's so determined here, and he looks like he's having lots of fun.
Omar skated this way and that.
He whirled and swirled from one end of the pond to the other.
Soon, Amar forgot all about being a bad artist.
He was having too much fun being a great skater.
Aw, that's so good.
When he jumped high in the air, the whole class cheered.
Look at Omar, said Thomas.
Look at the eyes, said Elsie.
Do you remember this picture?
Yeah, it's the same one we saw on the cover.
Omar is smiling and he's doing splits in the air.
On the ice were beautiful lines wherever Omar had skated.
Elsie saw a turtle. Thomas saw a bird.
Miss Fudge was sure she saw Omar's mother smiling.
Can you help me find the turtle?
Once the turtle and that's a little bird.
And this is Omar's mommy.
Very good. It was true. Omar had drawing many beautiful pictures on the ice. Even he could see how good his drawings were.
Smiley Omar, he's so proud of himself.
I was right, said Thomas, as they made their way home. You just needed a different kind of pencil.
Hmm. Thomas is a very good friend.
That's the end of our book, my little one.
book, my little one, and now it's time for bed. Good night and sweet dreams.
