Hey, I'm Nora Jones, and I love playing music with people so much that my podcast called Playing Along is back.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I sit down with musicians from all musical styles to play songs together in an intimate setting. Every episode's a little different, but it all involves music and conversation with some of my favorite musicians. Over the past two seasons, I've had special guests like Dave Grohl, Lave, Mavis Staples, Remy Wolf, Jeff Tweedy, really too many to name. this season, I've sat down with Black Pumas, Alessia Kara, Sarah McLaughlin, and more. Check out my new episode with John Legend. I feel like, in a lot of ways, our careers are paralleled in some ways, but they just never intersected for some reason. I know.
Starting point is 00:01:13 We should take it slow. We're just ordinary people. We don't know which way you go. Listen to Nora Jones is playing along on the I-Heart Radio. App, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm investigative journalist Melissa Jeltson. My new podcast, What Happened in Nashville, tells the story of an IVF clinic's catastrophic collapse
Starting point is 00:01:43 and the patients who banded together in the chaos that followed. It doesn't matter how much I fight. It doesn't matter how much I cry over all of this. It doesn't matter how much justice we get. None of it's going to get me pregnant. Listen to what happened in Nashville on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I'm Kristen Davis, and I want to know, are you a Charlotte?
Starting point is 00:02:11 So we're here, everybody, with the very special edition of Are You a Charlotte? This is our Christmas edition, because Christmas is coming really quickly. Yes. And we're thinking about last minute gifts, and we have some ideas. And East and our wonderful producers here with me, and we're going to talk about some last minute ideas in this sex in the city realm, but I don't know what we've got. It's going to be a surprise. Oh, this is going to be fun. If there's a sex in the city super fan in your life, even a casual fan. You know what? Someone's never seen the show before. I think this is still a very good
Starting point is 00:02:45 gift. We got some great stuff for people. Okay. I can't wait. You can get it all before Christmas. Amazing. Let's, or whatever holiday you celebrate. We got, we're going to start here with, we're just chatting before this started. Aviator Nation. We love. I love Aviator Nation. My kids love Aviator Nation. They're, to me, a tiny surf brand, started here in Malibu, and now, apparently... A collaboration with the New York Yankees. What?
Starting point is 00:03:11 We love New York. We love the city of New York. It's sex in the city. Isn't it so soft? Nice and soft. Yeah. Oh, Aviator Nation is dreaming. It's the best.
Starting point is 00:03:20 I love this. My kids would just really die for this, though, of course, they love the Dodgers, too. I don't want to get in trouble right now. We do love our Dodgers. Yes. Ooh. And this is available at Aviator Nation for $49 and $80, under $50. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but they have a lot of sales, you guys. Yes.
Starting point is 00:03:39 This is what I do because my kids are growing so quickly. I wait for the sales and then they get this stuff on sale, and then it doesn't make me feel like it doesn't last long enough. This is dreamy soft to sleep in. Love it. It's the best. But if you're more of a target person, there are targets everywhere all over this great land. We've got a black sweatshirt.
Starting point is 00:03:58 It's a Kroenex sweatshirt and it reads, I'd like a cheeseburger, large fries, and a cosmopolitan. Wait, I'm sorry, Target is selling this? This is Target. Wait. For 2699. It says sex and the city. What is going on? This appears to be a licensed sex in the city. Curenex sweatshirt.
Starting point is 00:04:14 I have not received any money for this. I'm curious how What is going on? As we continue on, how much you're going to recognize approving. I did nothing. No, no, we don't really. have merch. It's real cute, though.
Starting point is 00:04:30 It's very cute. The hits keep coming from Target. We've also got this fun hot pink tink top. Wait, what? For our audio listeners, it's... You guys? It says, I'm a Charlotte. Sex and the City. It's in the font, the Sex and the City font. Target is selling this? Target is selling that.
Starting point is 00:04:50 What, and it does say HBO on it. Yeah. I didn't know this existed. You know, when the show was airing, I wanted this stuff so badly, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Yeah, we didn't make it because I think that we didn't approve it because I think we thought that it would just be weird, but also we just didn't understand that it was going to be such a wonderful thing for all these years with all these wonderful fans. So I just think we undersold ourselves in a way. But apparently somebody at HBO has decided that we will be making merch.
Starting point is 00:05:21 I just was unaware. This one I love. It's $20.98. And for The Charlotte in Your Life, maybe you know someone named Shep. Charlotte. That's a great gift idea. I love all the people named Charlotte. Yes, I do. And it's really soft, and I love the pink. This one I
Starting point is 00:05:35 love. I was looking at this before we started. This is a, this is by Paper 8. And on the front, it has what paper, I assume this is Paper 8's logo. It says produced and released by Paper 8. It's a puff print font in yellow handwriting, and it reads, I'm sorry, I can't, don't hate me. It's pretty cute. Burger's famous
Starting point is 00:05:52 Post-it breakup. It's pretty cute. I love this. It's pretty good. Good. I like it a lot. I don't know who these people are, but I like it a lot of soap on the front or something. Yeah, I can't. Is that a bunch of tissue, a bar of soap, a VHS tape? I don't know. It says paper. It says paper. Maybe it's a paperweight. I don't know, but I like the quality. It's really, it's very, uh, it's soft, but it's chunky. It's a good chunky sweatshirt with a puff and whatever you just said. Yeah. Puff font. What did you say? A puff print. I think is what they call this type of ink. Is that what they call it a little bit? Need-need-old. Yeah, fun texture. And when you're waiting in line at the supermarket, someone will know your Sexson City fan. That's $78 a paper rate. You're so funny,
Starting point is 00:06:31 Easton. Oh, my God. Okay, keep going. Oh, right. You know, it's Christmas is coming. It's not too late to get a Christmas ornament. This is really fun. This is by Furbish. This is adorable. It's like an embroidered circle that has a cosmopolitan and says definitely a carry.
Starting point is 00:06:48 This is definitely a carry. I love it so much. I feel like somebody did this like with, you know, what's it called? Like, what's it called when you needlepoint, needle point? Yeah. It looks like needle point. I'm impressed.
Starting point is 00:07:02 It's very cute. I love it. Very. It's by somebody named Furbish. Furbish. The perfect gift does exist. They say, oh, that's cute. And we'll have all this stuff on our Instagram if you're wondering what it looks like.
Starting point is 00:07:17 If you're listening to us on the podcast app here. This is a next one. This is by five star napkins. I know everyone, top of everyone's critical. Christmas list napkins. I know. Stay with me. These are sex and city napkins and each one has a different carryism from the beginning of the episode. Wow. This is one at the top. I couldn't help but wonder, can you get to a future if your past is present? I love this. So good. It's so fun. I love it. This is really nicely done. Also, I like these very much. This is for when you have people over
Starting point is 00:07:52 and you want to have like a nice cocktail napkin. I mean, I'm going to open it and see what the next quote is, because this is real good, you guys. I'm just going to pull one randomly. This could also be an interesting, like, random, you know what I mean? Like, let's see what our message. Yes. Oh, it's long, you guys. Get ready.
Starting point is 00:08:08 I wondered, were we all just victims of conditioned responses doomed to repeat the same unconscious relationship patterns? Were we still in fact just dating the same person over and over again? It's really good And they're really nice quality Ooh, I like it a lot So wait, we'll read one more And then we'll move on
Starting point is 00:08:31 So when it comes to finance and dating I couldn't help but wonder Why do we keep investing? Oh, clever, clever, I love it Okay, go ahead It's so fun It's really good Usually when you see those kind of things
Starting point is 00:08:45 There's like they'll have three of them They just cycle through This is everyone seems to be different That's awesome. It's really, really thought out Next up on our little Sex and City gift roundup here. We've got a pair of little purses or pouches you can keep stuff in. These are, I don't know what you would call this, sequined.
Starting point is 00:09:06 It's beaded. It's beaded. And it says Charlotte York, you guys. Charlotte York. And then I've got another one here. It says, I'm definitely a carry. Oh, my gosh. It's from Boyar. B-O-Y-A-R. They're very, these are very cute. I love them. They got a little charm on them. Yeah, it's really cute. You could put. put like your lip gloss in here. You could also just put some money, a credit card in here. This could be a cute bag charm. You could connect it to your bag. I don't think I could walk around with the Charlotte York connected to my bag. I could put it inside my bag though and have it be my
Starting point is 00:09:39 special little thing. It's really cute. And that's really nice too. I like the idea. I'm definitely a carry. Love it. I love that. I cannot believe how many people are making merch. Okay. I'm a little shocked. I was unaware. This is a cottage industry now. Didn't know. Didn't know it all. Didn't know. Now we're heading over to Coles for our next piece of... What? Appears to be licensed HBO merchandise. No way.
Starting point is 00:10:02 This is a pink crew neck sweatshirt in the Sex and the City font. It reads our character's names, Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte, and Carrie. And then it says Sex in the City. I did not know you guys. How come no one told us? It's cute, though, because now you're just claiming everybody. Yeah, exactly. And it's a nice soft pink.
Starting point is 00:10:20 It's adorable. Wow, man, HBO, they've just decided to go out there with it all. Are they making, like, Game of Thrones merch, too? Like, what are they doing? I feel like I've seen a lot of Game of Thrones. No way. Okay, so they're just putting it all out there. It's all out there.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Wow. So Panas is out there. Wow. Where's the Arlis merch? I want to know where's Arlis. No, we don't need that. No. No offense, but, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:44 Larry Sanders, yes. Yes. Arlis, not so much. That runs you 2559 at Coles. Okay. This next piece is a, I'd say a burgundy. I have a problem with colors. This is like a deep pink, would you say?
Starting point is 00:11:00 Yeah, maybe magenta. A plum. I like plum. It's a little muted. So plum, yeah. This is really pretty. This is made by Wild Fox. It's available at Nordstrom.
Starting point is 00:11:08 And it's New York. New York with the heart. It's adorable. And then it says New York, the big apple. Yeah, it's cute. And it says, Establish 1788. That's cute. That's really cute.
Starting point is 00:11:18 It's like a quarter zip almost. Love it. Very cute. And it's. It's chunky. I like it. This is $12 at Nordstrom. Wow.
Starting point is 00:11:27 That's a deal. I dig it. Oh my God. This is adorable. Where does this come from? This is a custom job. This is a custom job. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:11:37 It's cute. It's cute. Really cute. And it's a red crew neck and embroidered along the neck. It reads, Are you a Charlotte? Oh my gosh. And at the bottom, it has really cute New York. It has like a penant.
Starting point is 00:11:50 And then it has a teutered. TV with multicolors. This is I love New York. Oh, it's really, really cute. It's so cute. I love this and it's so soft. Can I keep it? Yes.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Oh, that's a gift to you. These are gifts to me, you guys. I'm very excited and happy. I didn't know. It's weird to have HBO merch, but okay. So we have a lot of sweatshirts and such because it's, you know, it's a cold time of year. I love this, though. Moving on to some books.
Starting point is 00:12:20 I recognize. This is the Sex and the City Two book based on the movie And this is the stories, the fashion, the adventure. Yes. Now, this is on Amazon. This is $92.
Starting point is 00:12:32 Wow, because it's not in print anymore. That's right. Yeah, and Sir Jessica was involved in this. Really? Oh, yeah. I mean. And Molly, I believe, also helped. Like, they really, oh, what?
Starting point is 00:12:43 See, I didn't approve of these sex shirts. I opened right up to the Charlotte, your gold blog page. And we see a nice roundup of Charlotte. I don't even recognize this picture on the left. It's really interesting. I'm wearing a Prada skirt and a vintage top. This was the day, I believe, that we did the pretend vogue photo shoot for Carrie's wedding. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:04 And Andre Leont Talon came and Plum Sykes came, like really legendary Vogue people came. And I think Anna Wintora approved things for it. Wow. I know, but I've never seen that picture of myself, which is kind of amazing. And then we have young Lily, who's adorable. And then we have when I've had the baby Rose, who hasn't become rock yet. And then we have me jogging, which I think I'm pregnant. I've got the earmuffs on that I rewore and then just like that.
Starting point is 00:13:30 And then I love, this is when I had three dogs, which almost no one remembers. But there's Penny who played Elizabeth Taylor. There's Evan, of course. And then this is when she had those mutp puppies. Remember when I got mad at her because she was pregnant? These are two of the puppies. And see, one's like a Jack Russell and one's just like a non-determined white. much. And I only
Starting point is 00:13:51 had them in the first movie, I think. I don't think I had them after that. Because the second movie, we're not really at home. Maybe we saw them briefly in the second movie. Yeah, I know this opens up with a bit of a flashback to get you up to speed before we dive
Starting point is 00:14:07 into the second movie. Morocco, love it. Yeah. That's a Sauria. Yeah, we didn't get to go. Sarah went there and walked alone in the water. But There's some, uh, there's some interviews with, uh, with you. What?
Starting point is 00:14:24 Oh, actually, you know, I, I don't, I know we have other gifts to move on to. I think it would be fun. Oh, look. I love this Oscar to learn to dress. Wait, it's an interview with me. Okay, I have no memory of this, you guys. Uh, let's see. I'm just going to read just a quick little thing here.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Oh, about your first karaoke experience. Ooh, what do I say? I had never done karaoke in my life. I'm a shy singer and Michael decided we were all going to do that number in front of 200 extras. Yeah, we thought we were going to die. We lived through. it, and it was really fun, but we were so nervous. So nervous.
Starting point is 00:14:52 Singing karaoke was one of those crazy moments where you're just like, Sex and the City has a life of its own, and we're just here for the ride trying to hold on. It's like a bucking bronco. Wow. I was really honest. That's so good. It is like a bucking Bronco sometimes.
Starting point is 00:15:10 It's true. Well, I'm going to bookmark that page so you can relive some other moments. Oh, my God. I love it so much. Thank you so much because I don't even own this book. Thank you. Of course. It's exciting.
Starting point is 00:15:26 I'm investigative journalist Melissa Jeltson. My new podcast, What Happened in Nashville, tells the story of an IVF clinic's catastrophic collapse and the patients who banded together in the chaos that followed. We have some breaking news to tell you about. Tennessee's attorney general is suing a Nashville doctor. In April 2024, a fertility clinic in Nashville shut down over. overnight and trapped behind locked doors were more than a thousand frozen embryos. I was terrified. Out of all of our journey, that was the worst moment ever.
Starting point is 00:16:00 At that point, it didn't occur to me what fight was going to come to follow. But this story isn't just about a few families' futures. It's about whether the promise of modern fertility care can be trusted at all. It doesn't matter how much I fight. Doesn't matter how much I cry over all of this. It doesn't matter how much justice. we get, none of it's going to get me pregnant. Listen to what happened in Nashville on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:31 Who would you call if the unthinkable happened? I just fell and started screaming. If you lost someone you loved in the most horrific way. I said through you got 22 times. The police, right? But what if the person you're supposed to go to for help is the one you're the most. afraid of.
Starting point is 00:16:50 This dude is the devil. He's a snake. He'll hurt you. I got you. I got you. I got you. I got you. I'm Nikki Richardson, and this is The Girlfriends, Untouchable. Detective Roger Golubski spent decades intimidating and sexually abusing black women across Kansas City, using his police badge to scare them into silence. This is the story of a detective who seemed above the law until we came together to take him
Starting point is 00:17:18 down. I told Roger Galuski, I said you're going to see my face to the day that you die. Listen to the girlfriends, untouchable, on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Have you ever listened to those true crime shows and found yourself with more questions than answers? And what is this? How is that not a story we all know? What's this? Where is that? Why is it wet?
Starting point is 00:17:49 Boy, do we have a show for you. From smartless media, campside media, and big money players comes crimeless. Join me, Josh Dean, investigative journalists. And me, Roy Scoval, comedian, as we celebrate the amazing creativity of the world's dumbest criminals. We'll look into some of the silliest ways folks have broken the laws. Honestly, it feels more like a high-level prank than a crime. Who catfishes a city? And meets some memorable anti-heroes.
Starting point is 00:18:19 There are thousands of angry, horny monkeys. Clap if you think she's a witch. And it freaks you out. He has X-ray vision. How could I not follow him? Honestly, I got to follow me. He can see right through me. Listen to Crimless on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:44 And then this is the first book, right? Sex and City Kiss and Tell. Yeah. a sacred text for any fan of Sex and City. But the thing that's weird is that I remembered having a pink faux crock cover. This must be like a reissue. Yes, the 20th anniversary. Oh, the 20th anniversary.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Revised and updated to include all six seasons because the original one was published. It was published for the end, so it wouldn't have had the final six or whatever, however they broke it up. You don't know what I mean? That's interesting. I love this picture of Sir Jessica. It's a gorgeous picture. It's got a really nice. Spine. It's got that nice pink, a look great
Starting point is 00:19:21 on your bookshop. $17 on Amazon. Wait, open it and look in the back and see if it has the mint. Oh, okay. Oh, no, it has like cast photos. Oh, this is fun. There's a lot of behind the scenes photos at the end here. This is really, really cute. Glossary. Oh, my God. Funky Spunk is in there. Bad tasting boy juice.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Boy juice. That's what we wrote. That's hysterical. Although there's like trivia at the end. Oh, I'm in front of an act. That's Jackson Pollock and the Met. A beautiful picture of a Christian in front of a Jackson Pollock. Thank you. Wow, this is a really fun book. I got to buy this for myself. I know, but it doesn't have the men in the back, does it?
Starting point is 00:19:57 It does not have the, oh, here we go. There's Smith Jared. Jason. Oh, we have the men. But wait, let me see the back back. Okay. Because at one point they had like a grid where they put all the men, but then someone told me on our Instagram page that they redid it at some point.
Starting point is 00:20:13 And took out the men. No, they had the men, but when you actually counted up Samantha did have more. I believe it said. Oh, really? Yeah, because at one point, I had the most, which really didn't make sense. But I think, obviously, we don't know about Samantha before the show, right?
Starting point is 00:20:28 But at some point, they revised it, and I didn't have the most. But I remember Sir Jessica pointing out that I had the most at one point. There's a section for the men, and they kind of list them off here. Okay. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:20:43 And they include the non-romantic men, like Stanford's in here. I know. His little faces in there. It's really cute. Oh, yeah, right there's the bomb. So cute. So cute.
Starting point is 00:20:51 This is fascinating. This is a great book. I'm going to have to put this on my bookshelf, you guys. I'm excited to have it. Yeah. I'm excited to have it for sure. Oh, look, there's Franny. Oh, there's us laying on the bed.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Kyle Franny and myself laying on the bed. That was good. There's a whole page with Kyle looking super handsome. Oh, yeah. Love it, love it, love it. Photocopy that and put it on my wall. No, you're funny. It's adorable.
Starting point is 00:21:12 Yeah, this is a great gift for any Sex and City fan. Thank you. I'm keeping it, though. Not giving it to any other fan. But myself. about myself. So I brought a little something. It's not sex in the city related, but I just wanted to show you, and I thought you would appreciate this Easton. I have worked with the UN with refugees over the years, and I love my trips and my travels. And one time I was in a refugee camp,
Starting point is 00:21:32 and I met these women who were making baskets within the camp, with their kids there, it was like so fun and everyone was having great time. And they were making baskets that you could buy that would support them in the refugee camp. And it was such a great idea that we ended up making a way for you to buy goods from the refugees called Made 51. And we'll link to it with our Instagram, and they make the most adorable Christmas tree ornaments and or whatever ornament you might want to have. So this is called, hold on, hold on. Every gift tells a story.
Starting point is 00:22:03 You get a card about it. This is a cute donkey ornament. Oh, is that the noble donkey? The noble donkey. Thank you, babe. And this is East African refugees who have come from Egypt. So they're talking about things. They're making things that relate to their culture and their lives.
Starting point is 00:22:18 probably before they ended up having to flee and become refugees, which really no one wants to become a refugee. But some people have to. I know. And they have a whole story behind them. This is Desert Moon. Wow.
Starting point is 00:22:30 And is crafted by the Tuareg refugees living in Niger. This moon highlights their impressive metalwork techniques that they used to create both utilitarian and decorative objects. For these nomadic pastoralists who traditionally inhabit a vast area
Starting point is 00:22:45 in the Sahara Desert, the moon is a symbol of protection and prosperity. Amazing, right? And then look at this cute Afghan dog. Is that adorable? And this is by Afghan refugees, Afghani refugees, which is so amazing, of course, because obviously they've been through a lot.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Yes, yes. People from Afghanistan. So I just love these because I love the stories. And I also think they're just so beautifully made. They're made by hand. They're amazing. And you can support refugees where they are by supporting Made 51. They also have a bunch of non-holiday stuff, like cute makeup bag.
Starting point is 00:23:18 and I got a travel luggage tag. I mean, really cute things. What a special thing and such a cool way to support people who have just been through so much. And that you can go through something like that and still create this beautiful art. I'm just so, I'm so blown away by that. That's right. And I think the thing about refugees that people don't realize is that they really want to work. And so any refugees who might get to come to our country, which obviously it takes forever to get to come to our country,
Starting point is 00:23:47 They go through a lot to come here. They're the hardest working people that I've ever met. I've met people who come here and are so thrilled to get a janitor job. Like to them, that is like their life's mission to be able to be resettled and have a life for their family and work and they'll work all night. They'll do the jobs as no one else wants to do. So, you know, to be able to support them while they're still in the camps, doing arts and crafts that reminds them of their culture, it's so amazing.
Starting point is 00:24:11 And they get to be able to, you know, if you're in a camp and you're able to make extra money you can buy extra food for your kids. You may be able to send your kids to school. You might be able to buy books for your children. You know, it's, it's really so important to be able to support them before they might be able to be resettled because obviously it's really hard in this day and age to even get to be resettled. Absolutely. Yes. That's it. Made 51, everybody. Please go check it out. Yeah. And we'll put all this stuff on our Instagram. Yeah. That'll be fun. I got one last gift to show you, Kristen. Now, there's a lot of stuff we've talked about is like stuff for the fan, fans of the show.
Starting point is 00:24:45 This sweatshirt is ripped from the show. You can dress like Carrie. Amazing. We all remember she wears a sweatshirt that has the Monopoly board, but it reads New York instead of Monopoly. Amazing. I don't even remember this. When was this like the first show?
Starting point is 00:24:59 Yes. Okay, got it. It looks really cute. Yeah, it's so cute. There's someone on Etsy is making them, they're making like a duplicate of it. Awesome. It runs your 43 bucks.
Starting point is 00:25:10 Cool. That's a good gift. That's a gift for like the insiders. Yes, yes. people who really pay attention. And there's a lot of you guys out there, which we love. We love it when you know the details. This is a gift for that person.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Gosh, I learned a lot. I didn't know all this merchandise existed. So basically, we want to say to everybody, thank you for listening to Are You a Charlotte. We hope you guys are not stressing out there. I know it's hard. It's hard right when it gets to the holidays. I know I feel it myself.
Starting point is 00:25:41 The kids are still in school. The tree is not decorated. I'm behind as anything.
