Our hometown is not a test tube. 90 miles northeast of Nashville, a battle for the future of America, plays out in one small town. Developers with right-wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land. We need cities on a shining hill.
Starting point is 00:02:17 This is Our Town, a podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment and fights back. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbillies now, did you? Listen to Our Town on the I-Heart radio app,
Starting point is 00:02:31 Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I'm Kristen Davis, and I want to know, are you a Charlotte? Molly Rogers is here in person. Yay! Welcome back to Are you a Charlotte? I know. But this time we're together.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I know, we're together in person. This is your third, I believe. Isn't that? Yeah. The most of anyone. It's so much better than doing it on Zoom. You know what I mean? But you're a trooper because you one time zoomed from like the Bahamas, I believe.
Starting point is 00:03:06 The pink glitter. Oh, oh, got it. Very nice, very nice. A friend, a friend. We were on vacation with people. Anyway, it was gorgeous. It was gorgeous. So we love that you're here.
Starting point is 00:03:17 You're here because you and I did a really fun event last night. We did. We pulled it off somehow. We pulled it off. It was awesome. Oops. No, I knew we would pull it off because you and I can talk anywhere about anything. And it's really easy to talk about Devil Wears Prada.
Starting point is 00:03:31 It's when they try to strap us into rules that we get feisty. That's true. We don't want too many rules. It's true. And I think that's okay. Because after 30 years, we've earned it. I just loved how you come in and you're like, they're all standing excited to meet you. And you're like, I asked for cards.
Starting point is 00:03:52 And it's brilliant. But can I tell you guys, this is the truth of what happened. The wonderful thing is that here in my podcast world, I just get to do what I want. It's amazing. You're getting spoiled, right? Super spoiled, right? I have Hannah and Evie here and they just support me and what I want, right? Wonderful.
Starting point is 00:04:12 You're not being handled, really? I'm not being handled. Almost no one even tries. It's great. No one's coming into your dressing room saying now here's what we're. No. Anyway, so last night we were live right in front of a lot of people. So we did have to somewhat behave ourselves because I didn't want Molly getting in trouble.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Like how she got in trouble when she talked about the red shoes here with you. you guys, which we're not even going to revisit. You have to go back in time if you want to revisit the red shoes. Thank you for sparing me and them. But we had a really good time because also we had Jessica with us last night. Yes. So fun. My assistant costume designer on the other big thing. A million hundred years ago also, which is so nice to have the continuity over time with people. Yeah. Don't you think? It was, it's just incredible to work with friends. I remember, and this is a little bit later, but like back to how, like, how you knew how much she cared. Do you remember all the drama trying to figure out what we were going to wear to Carrie's wedding, right? Like the, as bridesmaids,
Starting point is 00:05:15 what color, what scheme, you know, who would make the dresses? You're triggering me. I'm sorry, babe. I know it was super stressful, right? It was. It was super stressful. It went on a long, long time. Do people know that Pat wanted S.J. to wear my dress? My dress. Yes. Dark angel. Yeah, I know that. I know that. I don't know that people do. Oh, I know that. It's funny, too, because I thought, and people have made so many clickbait stories about me saying that Sarah didn't want to wear the beige bridesmaids dresses for Charlotte's first wedding. Right, with the tartan. Right. And they were like, Sarah's mad at Kristen or whatever. No, people, it wasn't that. It wasn't that personal. It was just that Sarah, you know, her style is, it's super important to her in terms of. how Carrie would dress. I mean, this is not a mystery, right? Yeah. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:06:08 But I think because Sarah wore that dark brown dress when she married Matthew. Right. So it made sense to me that Pat would have been having a wider, you know, vision. Right. Of what Carrie would wear to get married. Can you imagine? Can you envision that? I can.
Starting point is 00:06:27 It would have been a different situation, though. Was it Michael who didn't want it? Was it Sarah? I feel like it was S.J. Okay. Or maybe even the studio. Because now that I heard about the script, the first script that was turned in. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Like, who knew? Who knew? No one. Right. So apparently New Line was giving more notes than we realized, you know, which is really, really interesting. But I also feel like we were trying to make up, you know, we were trying to take our show from HBO and put it on the big screen. There was a lot of pressure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:00 So we probably would have been more open to notes. than we would have normally. You know what I'm trying to say? Probably not Pat. Probably not Pat. Good point. But this is what I remember. And it's totally,
Starting point is 00:07:10 I don't know how you read in my mind just now because it totally is about that dress. I remember ongoing, ongoing, ongoing fittings and drama and designer conversation. And I don't know that you guys were totally sure which dress Sarah Jessica was going to end up in. For Carrie, there were choices and the Westwood was in there, but there were others. Like for the photo shoot,
Starting point is 00:07:28 remember she had all those dresses for the photo shoot, the Vogue photo shoot. Yeah. Which, by the way, danger zone. But Vogue tried to school me when I went to the meeting in Anna's office with John and MPK. And they had a run through with all of the gowns that we had already tried on her. They didn't like them? Like we had never seen them before.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Oh. Like schooling me. You mean, oh. Like they didn't. Like they had all of the gowns like, this is the Oscar. that she was really pushing for her to get married in Oscar. Wow. But the fitting photo that I have with some fitting model coming into Anna's office
Starting point is 00:08:12 to show John and Michael Patrick and I, a robe that Andre Leontali loved and wanted, I don't know if it was you or Carrie to consider wearing in the movie, but it was the loudest Samantha leopard print. And I was like, they don't know that the two of you would be like, Yeah, that's really interesting. That must have been a very Pat Field thing. Do you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:08:49 I do, I do. Also, I mean, if you look at Andre's taste, right, Andre was also, that was his taste. Flamboy, yeah. Obviously, yeah, he loved everything big. Interesting. So they had a lot to say. I do remember that my outfit that I wore,
Starting point is 00:09:03 because Charlotte goes to the photo shoot, that it had to be approved by Anna. It was like a high-wasted Prada shirt. Am I triggering you right left? Pat was furious that day and wore a bird on her head the whole day. I forgot that.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Oh, my God. Because Anna had so much power of the montage and Pat had wanted some different ideas in there. The montage is very straight. It's contained. It does look like a vogue shoot. It does. It does. It wanted it to look more sex in the city. Like edgy. I remember Pat felt and she was kind, she wasn't banished, but she was off to the She pushed. I remember her being in the back. And I remember she was either wearing devil horns or she had a bird on her head and she was walking. love it, love it, love it.
Starting point is 00:10:00 I have pictures of her. Oh my God, we need that. In the devil horns. We need that, babe. We need that. Let's go on my computer and find them. Totally. But this is what I was going to say, the thing that reminded me of this.
Starting point is 00:10:10 And I, you know, I was fully available to whatever Pat wanted me to wear, whatever you guys wanted me to wear in the wedding, right? Like I was like, cool, let's have another fitting. Let's do another fitting. I get the drama, right? Yes. And the designers and too many cooks in the kitchen. You were like, I'm going to make this happen. for you guys. I'm valuable.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Yeah. I'm cool. Yeah, that's where I was at that point for sure. So, I remember like 11 o'clock. My little flip phone rings. I pick it up. Kristen. Yes, Pat. I'll be Pat. Yes, then. Good job. Like, yes, Pat. Yes, Pat? What do you need?
Starting point is 00:10:46 And she basically says, would you be willing to wear black? And I was like, of course. I knew there was some black conversation going on. Incredible. Yes. And she said, there's this gorgeous Zach Posen dress And I was like whatever you want Pat I will wear it She goes it's really tight
Starting point is 00:11:02 What did you been in before Kristen? I mean I can't even remember I feel like they were very I do think we tried on some Oscar That was like ladylike But the thing that was difficult about the Oscar Or it was at least We talked about it
Starting point is 00:11:20 Maybe we looked at a lookbook It was it was Sir Jessica's silhouette Of the Oscar couldn't wear that. It was very silhouette, right? So it was very weird, but I knew there was a push from someone to be pushing Oscar. And of course, I love Oscar. No one was going to say no to Oscar. But it would be strange if she wasn't wearing a, I don't know, it was all very weird and stressful. But it was late in the game to be getting the Black Swan, as I call it. To be getting the note. Yeah. But I was thrilled. I was thrilled by the Black Swan. And I thought
Starting point is 00:11:52 that Miranda and Samantha looked incredible in Zach. Like it worked out. Yeah, it did. Yeah, yeah. It did. I'm surprised that Black Swan survived, man. We put that thing through, through hell. Those little bones were coming out. When I look at it, I'm like, it's folded in my cloth.
Starting point is 00:12:07 And I'm like, well, I can't put it on a mannequin in my home. Do you remember it hanging in the public library dressing room that we got to stay in? And my lovely dresser that year was having a nervous break. Totally, because she had to, every time I took it off, she had to re-steam all of the different, It's bones. Bones and folds. And wire. So tight.
Starting point is 00:12:30 It was the only thing that held me in that thing, man. That thing was no hits. How did you get in the limo? Did we throw you in their sideways? Yes. I know, but were you like this? I had to take those tiny, tiny steps, right? Which everybody remembers.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I had no choice, okay. It was the dress dictating that. And then I had to like, like, they cut it. But it was very Charlotte. I had to like kind of like, like put my butt and like, who, you don't know what I mean? Like, fall backwards. It's like, she's falling in.
Starting point is 00:12:58 She can't get up. It was like that. Michael cuts out before you totally see it. I know. Too funny. I thought you were stretched out in the back. I just don't know how you got in and out of that. I think I tried to avoid the backseat only when we were rolling.
Starting point is 00:13:11 Do you know what I mean? Because I was worried I was going to split that dress wide open. I was scared. I think she had to sew it numerous times. Like it was a lot. I know. We were talking about the movie and it's not what we're supposed to be talking about. Stop.
Starting point is 00:13:23 She's so bad. But it's really fun. I am so bad. It's really fun, though. Hey, it's Emily Tish Sussman, and this season on She Pivots, the podcast where women share
Starting point is 00:16:59 bold career moves and personal turning points that changed everything. I sit down with culture-shifting women who share their pivots like Paraly Olympian Alley Truitt. I was like, I'm a month out from a shark attack. There's no way in 11 months I'm making the Paralympics. Advocate Elizabeth Smart. I still feel that drive that I can still make a difference, so I'm going to keep going. Celebrity chef Carla Hall.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Was that scary to walk away from such a stable career after just two years? No. I was more afraid of being unhappy than I was. broke in a dead end job that I didn't enjoy. And feminist legend Gloria Steinem. All of us were trying to express women's real lives. We need a meeting place of our own. And if I can contribute to that, I'd like to maintain that and leave this house for that purpose.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Listen to She Pivotts on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is what we're going to do, you guys. First, we're going to recap 507. is called The Big Journey. Who wrote it? Michael Patrick King wrote this, and Michael Engler directed. Michael Engler.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Go right ahead, my dear. Can I tell you, I don't remember almost anything from this entire episode. Yes, you do. I only remember one thing and it's a behind-the-scenes thing that we're not even going to talk about.
Starting point is 00:18:28 But, well, maybe two things. But, like, just, I'm at this phase and I don't, I can't, I'm trying to analyze myself and figure out why I can't remember the show at this phase. I think it's because Sarah was pregnant. I believe Cynthia's pregnant and no one knows. I think I was much more consumed by are they okay? What is going on? Is that where your head was? Yeah, I don't think, you know what I'm saying? You weren't in. You were out. Yeah. And also I think because it's like this weird in between phase, like Trey's finally totally gone, right? Okay. And now I'm going to get
Starting point is 00:19:04 together with with Harry in this particular episode, but only a little bit, right? Because she's like, I can't possibly date him, which is hysterical. I don't remember any of this, really. It's pretty funny. But I just think I wasn't, I just feel like life was more interesting at this point than the script, which was not the case in the beginning, right? Like, I remember just living and dying for the script. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:19:28 Yeah. And maybe that's a bad thing for me to be saying, but I just feel like. No, I think it's where you were in your personal, like, Yeah. And I just think also because of the success, everything's very intense around us. Yes. You know, the paparazzi have arrived on the scene on a day-to-day basis. They're chasing Sarah Jessica trying to go to her OBGYN appointments. Like, it was a nightmare. You know what I'm saying? Like, it was rough. Like, she had to, like, hide on the back of a motorcycle and, like, drive-through alleys and stuff. Like, it was bonkers level. This is true.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Yeah. This is that time. Right. And now, look today, Annie Hathaway on the red carpet with a big, huge bump and, like, unbothered. Which is wonderful, but we don't know. Are they following her? Are they chasing her? We don't know. No.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Right? And I do feel like one thing that's changed, and this was, I think Kristen Bell, Dax, and some other people went and lobbied the magazines to stop buying. They did. They were like, this is dangerous. Yeah. Like to be buying for a lot of money, the pictures of people pregnant, you know, going to the hospital, coming out of the hospital.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Yeah, this is dicing, but I just recently saw Aubrey Plaza with her tiny, tiny, tiny baby leaving the hospital. I just saw this picture. So it's not over. Right. Do you mean? She did not look like she knew they were there. Because I remember Matthew and Sarah had to go out and basically do like a photo op. I saw that.
Starting point is 00:20:52 I was in Israel and was someone that I was dating at the time. And in the Tel Aviv paper on the front page was them outside the hospital. But they had to do it because when I went to her apartment to see the baby, James for the first time, you couldn't get down the street because of the like maybe 100 operazzi. Are you kidding? I am not kidding. Like we went up to the bedroom where the baby was and I looked out the window and it was just solid human beings. I had not. Oh, it was horrible.
Starting point is 00:21:26 It was horrible. Someone had rented an apartment across from her photograph through the room. To be on the same level of the baby nurse. It was bad. It was wrong. It was so messed up. Which is why when I adopted Gemma, I kept her in the house, like a prisoner, a baby prisoner. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:43 But you know what is interesting, though, about it? It is when, like, when I look at some of, we pulled some of our press things that we're going to talk about later. Yeah. It is when the paparazzi started showing up to our day-to-day filming. You know, we were talking about that last night about the outfits leaking. We didn't have social media yet, right? So it wasn't so much the outfits leaking on the day that you're. were filming.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Right. But it was in the magazines, right? So it would be like... Had a delay. Yeah, it was a little delay. It's not like you walked out on the street today and it goes around the world. Totally. You had a lag.
Starting point is 00:22:16 We did. We had a lag. But it was still kind of irritating. Yeah. It was intense. Yeah, you couldn't get through a day of filming without. It was just like a very long photo shoot. Did you ever go to set in a disguised outfit?
Starting point is 00:22:32 Like, you know, Remember when we did the first film, my very first day was when I see Big and I'm pregnant at the restaurant. That was your first day of work? Why did you write this pregnant water breaking on the street? Yeah, that was my first day of work. That was the day that I had to repierce my earring. Remember how I was only wearing one earring last night? Because this ear is never recovered.
Starting point is 00:22:59 I had my Van Cleef. They were like those little clusters, flower clusters. And, you know, it was my first day, and we had to get the pregnancy. And I had, I think, a Dior, like, you just gotten a bigger size. If that doesn't like maternity clothes, you know. And so it was like that silk, it was black and white polka dot with a little, like, you know, tight neck. Very cute dress. And so I'm in the dress.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I'm in the hair and makeup trailer. And they're like, ready, ready. You know, and they like, you know, it's like so stressed. And I did have my jewelry on. So I go to put the one earring on, it goes on fine. But my other earhead closed because my ears are very sensitive. I just had to jam it in there. And then blood dripped on the Dior.
Starting point is 00:23:37 And I was like, oh, my God. So we had to, like, get the wet ones out. That's a good story. You were bleeding that day. I was bleeding onto the Dior. It was so stressful. I know. And the ear, the ears never, never been the same.
Starting point is 00:23:49 That's all right. Great, great outfit that was. That was a great outfit. With a little pink coat, as I remember. Yeah, a little Prada satin raincoat. I think I have it. I don't have the Dior, though, darn it. But it would be, it would be too big because I'm not pregnant.
Starting point is 00:24:00 But you know what I'm saying? It would be too big. But I do think we returned it because we were trying to be good. Probably. Yeah. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author Patra Mather's and her husband Michael nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide. By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Next stop, Wonderland. Patra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people? they left behind. I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known. I keep coming back to, I truly hope that Petra was a thousand percent on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible from my mother's staff. I'm Leon Nafok. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patriot and Michael's letters as one married couple trying to understand another.

I mean, remember Mr. Winkle? The dog? I have a sign Polaroid that his owner did. I really thought that Mr. Winkle might be fake.
Starting point is 00:29:00 You did? Because when you see him. he's just looking straight ahead. I'm sure he's looking at his owner slash trainer. And his tongue is just moving very methodically out. Really? It's odd. But then, and I remember she had like a little basket kind of thing she had him in.
Starting point is 00:29:16 And he would just like fall back because I think he was older. You know what I mean? Yeah, he had big issues. Yeah. That dog was so popular. So popular. How did we know that then? That's a really good question.
Starting point is 00:29:29 How did they do? He didn't have follow. Well, see, I think it was early on because we talk about the internet, right? So we didn't have social media, but we have the internet. Really? Yeah. So I think it was early on because when she goes to the book signing and they tell her, Molly, Shannon tells her, oh, Mr. Winkle is after you.
Starting point is 00:29:49 She's like, what? Oh, right. And she goes, oh, he has a lot of people love him on the internet, she says. Yeah, okay. So I think it's like early days of what we have now, you know. And that dog was adorable. I just was like, and I tried to talk to the dog, and you know how I feel about dogs,
Starting point is 00:30:05 and the dog had no time for me. Like, I don't even think he looked at me. Like, it was odd. We have to ask Michael Patrick how we found out about Mr. Winkle. Anyway, so this is when, and also I have such meta, we're in the meta, this season is meta, right? Because she has her book that she's releasing and it's a premiere, sorry, book party.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Yes. It's like our premieres. Yes. You know what I mean? Like there's so many crossovers, right? And then the other episode is about criticism because Micho Kusuana, whatever name is, you know, in the New York Times and she says one thing. She says men are disposable.
Starting point is 00:30:44 She says that Carrie seems like men are disposable. Oh. Which is also something that was written about the show. Do you mean? Like Michael Patrick's incorporating like all these different things, right? And the question of that episode is how come there can be so many positives, but you just hang on to the one negative. Right.
Starting point is 00:31:03 Which is what we were all living through. You know what I mean? Like trying to please everybody now that the show is a big hit, right? But it's like so much pressure, right? Interesting. It is really interesting. And so in this, she's traveling to San Francisco because she has a book event, but really is because Big is there.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Of course we know. And weirdly, she just keeps repeating how horny she is for sex. Okay? It's crazy. It's so hormonal. Why are they on a train? They're on a train because it's after 9-11 and she doesn't want to fly. Got it.
Starting point is 00:31:34 And, you know, Sarah Jessica is not the biggest fan of flying. So I'm sure it was also related. And I do remember there was some pressure about her flying afterwards because she didn't want to fly. But we were still in the awards. We had to fly. Right. We had to get on a plane. Right.
Starting point is 00:31:47 So she convinces Samantha to take the train with her because she says something like it makes me uncomfortable when TSA goes through my cosmetics or something like this. Okay. Okay. So Carrie comes to the coffee shop. and just starts talking about being horny. I'm just like, I can't believe Sir Jessica's doing this. I know. I mean, over and over.
Starting point is 00:32:07 She's like, I just want to have sex. I just want a man to lay on top of me. She's just like, it's crazy. It's astounding, right? Yes. That was all that dialogue was all that. And she was doing it. Right?
Starting point is 00:32:19 Over and over. It's fascinating. Fascinating. And all of this are just like, okay. Now, was this. Was this the season that we only did? Yes, ma'am. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:33 This is the pregnancy season where we have to stop. We went from 18-hour days to like, hey, guess what? We're going to do eight-up, you know, something like that, right? Yes. And sometimes we would go home. Uh-huh. Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:45 This is it. This is it. And I think this, I feel, I know, I'm never sure how much I should say about this, right? But I think we'd had a break and we'd come back to finish. I think you may be right. Right? Because we needed to get over the... Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:04 But now we're having a lot of trouble disguising. Yes. And this is why it is the season of juicy couture, as I told you last night. And you left and I almost wore my juicy couture. But I can't find... I have the light blue version of the strapless. She wears the black in this one and the green last time at the Union Square Farmers Market. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:26 And she has a handbag in front of... Exactly. And her shadow has a bump. And they still spend a lot of money shaving that off. Definitely. Most definitely. Okay. I'm with you. I mean, she's literally wearing a juicy couture dress with a flower on it, tube dress, to go to dinner with Mr. Big.
Starting point is 00:33:45 It's laugh out loud, funny. And I feel like she must have put some kind of chiffon thing under it because when she gets on the bed, she's kind of trying to seduce him or whatever. There's some chiffon that definitely was not part of it. the tube dress. So you jujj did a little bit, I think, to make it longer. Probably. Probably.
Starting point is 00:34:02 She just worn the green one. Yes. Right? And I had the light blue one and I think I had the pink one. And this is what we wore all weekend in the Hamptons. It was the uniform of the summer. It was. I remember being called to her camper during the green juicy dress on the park day for some reason.
Starting point is 00:34:22 And I was scared to go. Oh. I was like, whoever her dresser was. I was like, give me a hint. I don't want to go in there and be sabotaged by something. Totally. Well, it was hard. It was hard to figure out.
Starting point is 00:34:37 And, well, we'll look at that later. So at this table scene where she's telling us how much she wants to have sex, I'm wearing this vintage dress, which I found in my closet and I fit into it. I'm very pleased. I mean, barely. Are this, barely? No, this is dinner. Oh, is it dinner?
Starting point is 00:34:50 I don't know. I'm asking. Is it coffee shopper? Okay. Maybe it is dinner. She's telling you. She's telling us she wants to go, that she's going. I think this is when she's telling you she's going on the book tour.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it looks nicer than coffee shop. Maybe we don't have our coffee shop set yet. Okay. Or maybe we have the old coffee shop set and not the all white one. Oh, yeah. Remember how it gets wider and wider as time goes on, which was fantastic. You liked that?
Starting point is 00:35:12 We needed the light. Yes, yes. Remember, do you remember in the olden days we would take our sides? We would hold them under under our chin and look around to make sure that all the grips that we wanted to fill. Oh, my God. But did you really? Oh, yeah. So funny.
Starting point is 00:35:30 A lot of the time. But then, but sad, eventually we get too old for this. Because it goes there. So then. Bring in the fans and the... No, the fans never worked, damn it. We tried. We tried the ringlight.
Starting point is 00:35:46 Do you remember this? Wow, I love those. I know, right? Because on the photos, we'd have the ring lights when Matthew Walston came. We were like, why can't we have these every day? Right. So they brought in one. Melvie very sweetly went out and got us one. And?
Starting point is 00:36:01 You can't use that in a scene. Because if you move or you lean, you're out. Right. Like it's not conducive. Like it's not conducive to a scene. So then I remember that it just sat really sad, like collecting dust as silver cup. We'd walk by it. And wave to it.
Starting point is 00:36:17 There it is. There's the ring light. You know. It makes me want to attach one like that. Right. Wouldn't it be nice to have it at all times. I totally agree. That's funny story.
Starting point is 00:36:28 I know. Okay. I'm going to continue with my recapping. It's going to be hard. So she basically says, at one point she says, Samantha says, well, why don't you just have sex with a prostitute rather than going all across the country? And it's like so crazy. I know. And then they have a whole plan.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Samantha wants to open like a chain like Starbucks, which they come up with some cute pun for, like, like, I don't think we have it written down here. but it's some pun about like she fucks or something. It's not that. But you know what I mean? Like it's something. This is a wild episode. It's wild. 100% wild.
Starting point is 00:37:06 And when we get to the train, we have another wild thing. We'll get to in a second where, you know, carries the pimp for Samantha with a bunch of married straight guys. What on earth? And they're not biting. They're not biting. They're all watching a game or something. Totally. Yes, Molly.
Starting point is 00:37:23 You're very good. But the thing that's funny is. is that there's like, we just lean into it. You know what I'm saying? Like, we're just like, yeah. Like, so just because like, I'm horny. Like, it's craziness. I'm just like this.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Right? I know. It's funny. It's really funny. What's the name of this episode? Oh, the long journey or something. The big, big, big. Because their journey across the country is the big.
Starting point is 00:37:49 And then he's fascinating. We're going to get to him in a second. Let's just stay with Carrie, because this is the big storyline. Okay. My storyline is big, too, but whatever. It's not big, big, but you know what I'm saying. Yeah. So she basically says, this is also really funny.
Starting point is 00:38:01 They're at this dinner slash coffee shop, whatever it is. So they discuss how big is your prostitute and she's happily mixing business and pleasure. It's all very strange, okay? Then she invites Samantha. Samantha says that she's done with New York, and why is it even called New York? It should be called Old York. Okay. Because everything's boring, which is interesting, right?
Starting point is 00:38:21 And basically she's having a midlife crisis. but she doesn't want a convertible and she doesn't want something else that you get in a midlife crisis out of row. She talks about this all in the train. So it's all very interesting and like fascinatingly strange, right? No kidding.
Starting point is 00:38:37 Carrie invites Samantha to go with her on the train and she says yes, which I'm like, wow, okay, wow. Another, what's going on here? Totally. Yeah. So they get on a train from New York to San Francisco. Then there's a train. the most adorable scene of them going to get on the train.
Starting point is 00:38:55 They think they're about to live out some like it hot. Okay. Right? And she is the beautiful, I believe, Prada luggage that I think she still has and I think was in, and just like that with the pink print on it, it's white. It's the most impractical, expensive luggage I've ever seen in my life. You don't know the one I'm talking about? Is it leopard pink?
Starting point is 00:39:18 It's like weird leopard. Yeah. It was Vivian Westwood. No. And they've lost all of it. No. With lost. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:39:28 Oh, no. Because we did get it back for Abu Dhabi in the trunk, I think, like a piece of it, the one left. Drama. It was real old school train case. Yes, it's square and white. It's so impractical, right? She also has a Louis Vuitton, like, hat case me, or maybe a white hat cap. It's all very, we're going to see more of this as time goes on.
Starting point is 00:39:50 Okay. Yes, but it's adorable. Is that pink leopard? Am I describing something improperly? No, no, that's it. It's just designs of the pink leopard. Right. It's not solid.
Starting point is 00:40:00 And the white famous Pat Field, 60s round case. Oh, that's vintage. Yeah, of Pat. Cool. That's Pat's. Amazing. That we used in and just like that. For Carrie.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Mm-hmm. Do you remember I had because I had to wear that huge hat in Morocco slash Abu Dhabi? I had something hat related. Yeah. Because we were trying to figure out how to justify that I have a big hat on my head or whatever. Yep. There, look at it. It is so good.
Starting point is 00:40:33 That's in someone's private collection and they'll crank it out someday and charge a crazy number for it at Sofabies. Wow. Because I was so upset when I called them and they said, guess what? We don't have it anymore. We've only got one piece at Westwood. Got it. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Did you think we returned it? We did, yeah. Okay, got it, got it, got it. They went back to them and somebody was like, hmm. Wow, it is good. It is really good. Wow. Anyway, they have the cutest scene where they're all excited because she got them like the first class, you know, super cabins or whatever.
Starting point is 00:41:09 As high classes you could go on this Orient Express. And then they get on it. Ooh, it's not good. It's tiny. It's a funny, funny, funny scene. That's funny. The bathroom, you have to, there's a little. Spicket over the toilet, you know.
Starting point is 00:41:24 And she's like, what? And then Kim says something like, Samantha says something like, I see why someone committed murder on the Oran Express. Pretty funny. It's good. It's a lot. It's rich for.
Starting point is 00:41:36 It's very rich. It's very, very good. So obviously, it's pretty disappointing. It's funny because MPK loves those travel old school. He really does. Like we're, obviously. And like when we get on the Emirates Slavit. whatever we call it when we go on the plane.
Starting point is 00:41:54 Yeah. What does he call them something? What does he call it? It's not a travel movie. A road movie. A road trip movie or whatever. Yeah, he does love it. I mean, I love it too.
Starting point is 00:42:04 I love it too. Like my favorite... Oh, God, what's his name? Director. Give us hints. Royal Tenen bombs. Wes? Yes, Wes.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Anderson. Anderson, thank you so much. My favorite Wes Anderson is the one where they're on the train in India. Love it. Mary Gold Express or something. Yes. And they have the Louis Vuitton. Oh, it's so good, I think.
Starting point is 00:42:29 Okay. I'm sure it is. I don't think it's everyone's favorite, but I love it. And they had one of a kind Louis Vuitton luggage made. I know. Love that. The new Red Bull Dragonberry and Tropic Berry Energizers now at McDonald's, made with freeze-dried fruit and an electric burst of flavor.
Starting point is 00:42:54 The all-new Red Bull. energizers. Now at McDonald's. This product may not be right for you. High in caffeine, details at McDonald's.ca.ca. At participating Canadian restaurants excluding Quebec. When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. Starting point is 00:43:32 I knew if he woke up. Without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Starting point is 00:45:56 Listen to Pro Society on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. Dear honies, this is goodbye. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patramathers and her husband Michael, nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide.
Starting point is 00:46:18 By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland. Patra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known. I keep coming back to I truly hope that Petra was a thousand percent on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her?
Starting point is 00:46:48 Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible for my mother's staff. I'm Leon Naif. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patriot and Michael's letters, as one married couple trying to understand another. Listen to Death of an Artist on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. So they're on this train.
Starting point is 00:47:16 It's sad. It's not what they think it's going to be. Their fantasy is not at all coming true. Yes. So they go to the restaurant. There's no seat. She asks for table for two. and he's like, sit down where you can.
Starting point is 00:47:31 And then they sit next to some Amish people. Oh, yeah. And they can't stop talking about sex and gay. I don't know what. And the people are right next to them. Like, it's quite crazy. That is so funny. And the lady just looks at them, you know, and Carrie keeps apologizing.
Starting point is 00:47:50 It's interesting, man. It is. It's like almost a standalone in a way. You know what I mean? Except for my story, which we'll get to in a second. And poor Miranda, I don't think we really. see Miranda. Poor Miranda.
Starting point is 00:48:02 Poor Miranda. No? I bet she filmed something in that got cut. We should find out. We should ask Michael Patrick. Okay. Remember how that started happening as time went on?
Starting point is 00:48:09 Was she doing something? Well, she has the baby. Okay. And we've had a couple of baby-centric ones. And yeah, Michael only had limited, limited patients for that. Okay. So then Carrie starts getting a Zit on her cheek and she's very stressed. She's like, I can't even call big if I have this Zit.
Starting point is 00:48:30 right, which is also so hysterical, like high school. It was hideous. Was it real? No. No. Okay. I don't know how they made it. Yeah, they did a great job that I've been asking that question.
Starting point is 00:48:43 I'm sure that was Judy Chin. Judy Chin specialized in all the special things, you know? An Oscar winner now. Yes, exactly. Exactly. Like, remember when I played the guy in the suit and she did my eyebrows? Mm-hmm. Because she had done the Frida Callo movie with Salma and had,
Starting point is 00:49:00 perfected, natural-looking unibrowse. I know, right? So talented. So talented. I know. We should try to get her on her. I don't know where.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Oh, I think, is she doing, Nikki's doing Gilded Age? Is Judy doing Gilded Age? I don't think so. She does severance. I talked to Adam Scott about it. Yeah, she does severance. I know.
Starting point is 00:49:21 We love her so much. Anyway, here we are. We're back. We're back. They sit next to the Amish people. Carrie trial. Oh, then. So Samantha.
Starting point is 00:49:30 also think she's going to have sex with people who aren't boring New York people, right? Which is obviously not going to pan out. You know what I'm saying? So they're on the train and she's like, only ugly people are on this train. I mean, she is brutal. Brutal, okay? Then she's like, every time it stops, attractive people get off and ugly people get back on. And you're just like, oh, my God, Samantha, be quiet.
Starting point is 00:49:54 Then she's like, I heard there's some handsome men here. Get dressed because Carrie's like messing with their friends. you know, in her room. Let's head to the bar car. Exactly. So they put on some dresses. Samantha's hair has also gone horribly wrong. Is that a storyline or just did?
Starting point is 00:50:09 They don't mention it, but I'm sure it's because of the lack of a decent shower. Oh, right. That would make sense. I mean, it's weird. And the previous episode, Miranda's hair has gone hardly really wrong because Samantha's is going to give her her hair appointment, right? But like to the point where like I think they just sprayed it and tea, like, Cynthia's Harry, I mean, it's crazy level.
Starting point is 00:50:31 Like, at this point, it's almost like we're just pushing all the boundaries. Right. On every. And when we get to Harry's back, we can discuss. Like, we're just going overboard with everything. Oh, my gosh. Right? So we, so Samantha's like, get dressed.
Starting point is 00:50:47 We're going to the, you know, the train car or whatever with the food. So they go up there. These guys look, I mean, also at the beginning when we're at the dinner, there's some men checking us out. that Samantha's like, or maybe Miranda, Miranda's like, oh, these men have been checking us out. And I'm like, cute, cute and cute. And Samantha's like, boring, boring and boring. Then you should see these men on the train car.
Starting point is 00:51:07 So much more boring than the ones in the restaurant, right? But she's like, you know, she does her whole Samantha thing, do you mean? And Carrie, right. Carrie's got so much blush on to try to cover that she says she looks like, which is also funny because remember the season where she wore the Heidi? I know. I'm like, oh, we got a whole blush through line going on. but that's okay.
Starting point is 00:51:27 Then, so they go to the train car, Samantha tries, she's like, hello, hello. And they're totally ignoring her watching the game, and she can't figure it out. And she's like, Carrie, you know, what's going on? It's not working. So Carrie, weirdly, okay, goes back in, leaves Samantha like at the joint of the cars. And she's like, hi, guys. I just want to tell you, my friend is here. And, you know, if just one of you would engage in some.
Starting point is 00:51:56 some flirtation, some innocent flirtation. I mean, and they're like, we're married and we're trying to behave, except for this one who's getting married. He's the last of us, right? So they're all married, but the one getting married. Right, the bachelor's party era. Right, right, right. But they're all married guys going to the bachelor's party.
Starting point is 00:52:14 And they're like, we love our wives. So then Gary goes back to spend that she's like, they love their wives. Wow, really well written. I know, really well written. But also just trippy, man. I'm like, who are we? What is going on? You pulled out all the stops.
Starting point is 00:52:34 You were in a writer's room by yourself and no one was stopping you. That is what it's like. Yeah. That is what it's like. I mean, I can't count. Someone should go and count how many times Carrie says horny. Because it is so many times. And also she keeps repeating, I just want a man to lay on top of me.
Starting point is 00:52:51 Like it's so crazy. It's bizarre. I think we're just like, let's just go all the way. We're going for it. We got nothing to lose. Yeah. And Sir Jessica was like, I'm doing it. I'm leaning in.
Starting point is 00:53:04 I mean, it's very interesting. Okay, so then there's so much happens with Carrie. So then Samantha gets drunk. Samantha ordered champagne for the bachelors. They're uninterested. So she takes the champagne back to Carrie's. Right. She has drunk. Her hair is very, very messy.
Starting point is 00:53:21 I don't, I don't know. She looked like she slept with all of them. She did. She didn't, exactly. And she keeps talking about her midlife crisis or whatever. Then they finally get to San Francisco. And Carrie is very impressed by the turnout at the bookstore, only to find out that it's because of Mr. Winkle.
Starting point is 00:53:38 Right. Not because of her. No, it's pretty sad. And she tells Samantha, go take a bath. I think because of the lack of shower, right? Go take a bath. I'll meet you later. Samantha goes.
Starting point is 00:53:50 Then we're in the thing. It's always so sweet to me when. Carrie reads, Carrie's book, because it's our type voiceover. Like, I wonder, blah, blah, blah. It's like, I really like it. Yeah. I really like it. So she reads and then she says, does anyone have any questions?
Starting point is 00:54:08 This man raises his hand. He's like, when is Mr. Winkle coming out? Right. And she's like, soon, you know. And then another hand goes up. And then she's like, I can't see the man. Of course, it's big. Yes.
Starting point is 00:54:22 And he asks, does me? Mr. Big have a real name. And Carrie says... In this episode? Yes. And Carrie says, right? Carrie says, I can't reveal it. And then he says, why not? And she says, because I have to respect his privacy.
Starting point is 00:54:41 Interesting, right? I can't even believe that that was there. Yes. Then. Yes, that is there. Then. And I have to say, Mr. Big has turned a new leaf over. Okay.
Starting point is 00:54:53 San Francisco has been. been good for him. He's like a different person that you can now want her to eventually end up with. Thank you the Lord. Okay. All right. I was not previously aware of this. I had not clocked this. I'm sure he'll backtrack at some point. I have no idea because I don't remember the rest of the show, as we know. But in this episode, I really liked him. And I liked him because so Carrie, who's been wanting sex the whole episode and very openly thinks that Mr. Big is going to be the way to have the sex. he says he comes to the thing, the book, no, he comes to the book. And then she runs home, Samantha's in the bathtub, exactly where she told her to be. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:33 And she's like, you have to get out. Yeah. And she's covered in, you know, suds. And she's like, I got another room for you. It's smaller on the first floor. I'm like, harsh, Carrie. So harsh to Samantha. Poor Samantha, you told her to take a bath.
Starting point is 00:55:47 Do you what I mean? So she's like, get out now. So Samantha has to get out. And you see, Kim looks fantastic. But then Mr. Big. He knocks on the door. It's weird. He knocks on the door.
Starting point is 00:55:56 He comes in. He's like, why did you make me walk around the hotel lobby? I'm like, oh, it's the same as your big. Right. And then he goes, I bought you some gum, which is weird. He holds up the big red. I'm starting to wonder if we've got some product placement going on. Because very recently.
Starting point is 00:56:10 What is that about? I don't know. It's about someone making money somewhere. Yeah, yeah. Right? But I was unaware. I'm not sure, right? But like the McDonald's, we started having McDonald's mentions.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Okay. It's interesting. Like when it's burger. they go to McDonald's. Yeah. Weird. And remember when Big is going to go to Paris, she brings La Big Mac, remember that?
Starting point is 00:56:33 Yep. But that made sense. But anyway, he holds up the big red, and it's like perfectly, you know how when you're holding things up as an actor? You have to get it just right? Yeah. And then he says, would you like some?
Starting point is 00:56:44 And I'm like, does she have bad breath? Like, what is happening? What is that bizarre? But there's a reason. It's coming. Okay. So then she goes, she goes, well, are you going to have some gum?
Starting point is 00:56:52 He's like, I'm like, what is going on? And then he gets the gum and she's doing like, crazy, crazy flirtation where I'm just like, oh my God. Slightly embarrassing, cringe-worthy. I guess they would say now, she's like, you look so good. And he's like, you do too, girl. You know, he's like, what, not girl, babe, what does he call her? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:57:16 Yeah. You know, like, he's like very whatever. And she's like, you know. Come here. Right. Then she just jumps on him, okay? She just leaps at him. and he swallows his gum.
Starting point is 00:57:27 It's nuts. And I thought she was going to have to give him the heimlich. Right. Because at this point, I remember nothing that I'm watching, right? Exactly. I was like, is she going to have to give him the hymlich? Is this like foreshadowing of the heart attack? Like, what is happening?
Starting point is 00:57:37 Do you mean? But no, she doesn't. He just goes like, he goes like, it's so weird. It's so weird. I don't even know what is happening, okay? It's just strange. Like, I really want to rewash it. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:52 This is all while she's, wearing the black tube dress. Right. With the flower pinned on to try to make it look a little fancier. Exactly. It's crazy. It's so crazy. So then he's like, let's go to dinner.
Starting point is 00:58:05 I have a reservation. She's like, no, no, let's catch up. Stay in. Yeah. She's doing all the things. And he's like, no, no, I told my partners that I was going to make a connection with the restaurant. Like, he's all business, right?
Starting point is 00:58:15 And she's like, no. He's not taking the hint. He's, no, he has it. I think I know what he's. doing because it's very unlike him and you're wondering what the heck is going on right but she's pouring on it so thick also that it's weird right yes so then i don't know what my notes say but what i remember is that eventually so he gets her to dinner and then he says so i'm walking through the mall and she says the mall and he says i live in america now wow it's so good what a great line right
Starting point is 00:58:48 i know it's so good and she and he goes you have to go through the mall to get outside I know, it's really, really funny. And then he goes, so I'm walking through the mall, and I look up, and there's your book next to all the real books. Boom. I know. I'm like, what? She's not even offended. She's like, uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:59:13 And then he goes, and I look at him, and I see you, and I'm like, wow. You know, so I buy it, and I read it all in one sitting. That's right. I light up my cigar on my porch, and she's like, you're. porch. She's like, who is this? Right? And he goes, and I read it all in one setting. And she's like, wow, and what did you think? He goes, I did not realize that I hurt you.
Starting point is 00:59:34 Exactly. And I'm like, that's amazing. Does she think it's amazing? She does not. She just wants to have sex with that man. I'm like, what is wrong with Carrie? I would have been like, stop everything. Yes.
Starting point is 00:59:48 Stop the world right now. Right. This man is, has an admission. acknowledging and taking some responsibility or trying to take some responsibility for hurting her. She does not want to hear it. Crazy. Weird. This is earth shaking.
Starting point is 01:00:04 Right? This is why they're kind of suited to each other, I think. Do what I'm saying? Because what woman would not be so excited? Like, I was just like, wait, I gotta rewind this and rewatch it because I can't even leave what I'm saying. Right. So then they go back to the hotel and he reads passages to her that are so great. about how he's cold and what other words does she use, like, withholding, all the things that he totally is, okay?
Starting point is 01:00:32 He totally is. And he's like, was I really that way? And she goes, no. She's shaking it all. It's over. That's back in New York. I'm like, what is wrong with you? She's just trying to get laid.
Starting point is 01:00:43 Right, but that's so silly. That's so silly. The way to get laid would be to talk about the feelings. You know what I'm saying? Like if the man wants to talk about the feelings, talk about the feelings. talk about the feelings. Oh my gosh. So anyway, they're on different pages.
Starting point is 01:00:58 Yeah, big time. And I'm like, man, you're missing out, lady friend. You've got to talk to him at the moment that he wants to do it. And this culminates in nothing, right? At the night time. It works out in the morning. It does in the morning. Yes, it works out in the morning.
Starting point is 01:01:12 But I'm like, this is such a sad missed opportunity, but it is also the problem with Carrie, right? Like, Carrie is not worked out, which we know. She's flawed. We know this. We love this about her, but it is a very extreme example. Wow. What man is trying to talk to you about your past with him and you don't do it? What on earth?
Starting point is 01:01:37 This is a great episode. Right? But it's weird also. So then they fall asleep in their clothes. She's still wearing the juicy tube. I mean, she wears this for a long, long time. It's very funny. And then in the morning, this is just so silly too.
Starting point is 01:01:54 The phone rings and she picks it up. You know he's there, but you can't really see him. You're not supposed to know he's there. And she says, hello. And they say, this is your wake-up call. And she goes, oh, thank you. Remember the days of the wake-up call? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:06 And she goes, what time is it? And they said, 7.30. And she said, what time did I tell you to call? And they say 7.30. I'm just like, what is happening? Like, Carrie, who are you? Like, why would they call at a different time? That's not how it works.
Starting point is 01:02:23 Like, it's so funny. But I don't even know what people know now. Like, we don't have our, we have our flip phone. Right. They have our Motorola flip phone. Right. Every time I see it on the show, I have just such a feeling of love. Like, we were so into our flip bones.
Starting point is 01:02:37 Yes. I mean, man, that thing lived with us. It was exciting, you know. Yeah. That was a big, big prop. It was a big, big. I mean, not a big, big prop. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:46 But it was. It was important to our lives. Yes, it was very important. So then we see that Biggs there, and then he wants to have sex. So I'm like, okay, good. So she gets to have sex, finally. And then she has some other book reading. So we get to see her reading from her book again, which is adorable.
Starting point is 01:03:03 There's no dog present. And then Samantha shows up, looking fantastic. And she has booked them airplane. Oh, yeah. Yes, and a car and put the luggage in the car, which is, I'm impressed, okay, with Samantha. And Carrie says, thanks for doing that, which is nice. and then Samantha says, well, what happened? Did you see Big? And she's like, yes, I did. And then Samantha says, did you have sex?
Starting point is 01:03:25 And she said, yes, I did. And then Samantha says, well, how was it? And Carrie goes, the question and answer portion of this reading is over. And I'm like, gosh, that's so mean. And then she says something like, I'll tell you on the plane or something like that. So I guess we're going to hear more later, but we don't get to hear it or whatever. Right, right. It's super fascinating, though. And I don't know what happens next with the big, I have no idea. I do not know. Right. It's super interesting. Where did that leave? Where did it go? It goes somewhere. Yeah, for sure. I remember what Harry's wearing. What was? Already? No, no, it's going to go to Paris. Right. There's something in between. Do you mean that crazy pink thing?
Starting point is 01:04:02 Yeah. What is that? That was like some Vivian Westwood maybe. Was it? I think. It's wacky. No, no, the blue was. Oh, the blue is amazing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And she had a wrap around neck. Anything to distract from the. Right. No, there's some crazy tie-dye situation with the. asymmetrical necklace, very reminiscent of what she wears now in simple colors. Yeah. So that was the carry thing. It was trippy. It was very trippy.
Starting point is 01:04:26 Now, let's discuss Charlotte for a second. I know it's a lot. It's a lot. It was really good. I want to hear Charlotte. Charlotte is really funny. First of all, I'm wearing some horrible, like, 90s-type glasses. Really?
Starting point is 01:04:41 I just don't think they're great. I think that the glasses I used to have in the beginning of the show were more square. and better. Like, these just sit, like, funny on my face and you can't really see my eyes. And a headband and some glasses and the David Gregory dress. What the heck, right? And I'm wearing a running outfit. Well, I'm, I'm...
Starting point is 01:05:02 You're not because you're divorcing. I think I'm a docent. I'm a docent. Okay. Remember that? That was awesome. In the actual Metropolitan Music of Art. Because I see funny and pray.
Starting point is 01:05:16 Yeah. And I don't talk to them. that was a while back. We don't know if I'm working. You're not, I'm just trying to keep the apartment. That's my main storyline, right? Okay.
Starting point is 01:05:24 So I had that super handsome divorce attorney, but I couldn't be my real angry self in front of him. So Evan is his partner, sorry, Harry, and he walks through, and I'm like, who is that? And I'm like,
Starting point is 01:05:37 is he a killer too? Yeah. And the handsome guy says, yes. So I switched to him. And he's adorable and excellent. But so, so much rougher that I remember.
Starting point is 01:05:50 Like he was supposed to be kind of the anti-tray, right? So he really goes for it. Do you know, he's like, ah, you know, he's like, you know what I mean? He's like, you know what I mean? He's very rough and tumbled kind of like. Yes, I do. And just costume related, maybe you remember this, he hated his ties. And Pat said, but you're not a polished Park Avenue guy.
Starting point is 01:06:16 guy, you need to look a little bit like a door-to-door set. You've got to have wide and loud. And he really resented it. He did. I heard about it a lot. It's true. It's true. But this is what I want to say.
Starting point is 01:06:29 He's still a lawyer, right? And the guy who was his partner looked, he's very JFK Jr. Right. That was he was supposed to look like. Yeah. So I could see both sides. I could see why Pat wants to make this extreme statement, right? Here's the choice.
Starting point is 01:06:44 Right. But I also. So the way that Evan acts it does the work. He doesn't need the ties to be loud. The fact that they're a little wider, I think, is perfect, right? But we didn't need loud on top of wide. Do you know what I mean? Because he's already different enough.
Starting point is 01:06:59 He didn't need to look like he could be on the other show, the Sopranos. No, because he was right on the edge. Right on the edge. I hear you. Right on the edge. We didn't need to go that far. Totally accurate statement. So he's very, I don't even know how to put.
Starting point is 01:07:15 put it. At the time, yes, you didn't see him. I don't know what I was thinking at the time. I'm watching myself and I'm like, what am I doing? Okay. You know, sometimes I feel that way when I watch, like sometimes I know exactly what I'm doing, right? Like, I made this choice, I made that choice. I agree with them. I don't or whatever it was. I'm a little bit unsure, I think also acting wise, right? Because Charlotte, the way he writes it, you know, like they cut to my face going like, you know, like looking at it like, you know, there's a lot of this. Like, really? Who are you? Like, what is going on here? Like, you know, I, but I play that moment over and over and over. And I do remember that certain directors would want that, right? And so I think that when I'm watching myself, I can see myself trying to do the notes that have been given to me.
Starting point is 01:08:11 and maybe not totally being free. I see. I see what you're... Like it's an idea. Yeah. You know? But also he's so great. And I'm just kind of responding to him, right?
Starting point is 01:08:22 Like I'm just tilted. Like, what is going on? Like, for instance, he just knocks on my door one day, right? I'm in a dorm man building. But whatever, he just knocks on my door. And I'm like, you couldn't have sent a messenger? No. And he goes, no, I needed the walk, but he's covered in sweat.
Starting point is 01:08:36 Right. Right. This is the sweaty. I'm in the neighborhood. Exactly. He's like 12 blocks. You know what we would have charged you. for 12 block delivery.
Starting point is 01:08:43 And I'm like, okay. Like, that's literally my whole, like, the whole episode. I'm like, okay. Except I do have a funny scene with Mario. So then, so he comes in. I'm in my sweats, like, totally not in Charlotte presentable land, right? And he brings the papers. This was the scene that I had to call Michael Patrick for for support.
Starting point is 01:09:03 We're in Silver Cup in Charlotte's apartment. Michael was writing and or editing and or whatever. Right. so he was upstairs. And the sweat, he wants me to sign my divorce papers. And like literally my signature is horrible. Like that's how nervous I am. Like I'm off my game, right?
Starting point is 01:09:23 Because there is some disagreement over whether Charlotte thinks that the sweat falling on the paper is sexy or not. I did not think that Charlotte felt that the sweat falling on the paper is sexy because I tell him you're still sweaty. This is not something Charlotte would be into. Right. But there was some disagreement where I had to pick up the phone and call Michael Patrick and be like, Michael Patrick, can you please come and help me? Because I don't think that Charlotte would think that the sweat on the paper was attractive.
Starting point is 01:09:54 And he's like, no, of course not. But, you know, sometimes you had those ones where not everyone. You had to use the white courtesy phone. The white courtesy phone. The bat phone. 100%. I was like, can you please come and help me? So he does, which was great.
Starting point is 01:10:07 but I think I wanted to be more like, ew, you know what I mean? Like more openly. But you know how Charlotte's also polite, right? So it's kind of this fine line between what I really want to do. And then I'm like, what is actually happening? Yeah. You know what I mean? So he says, oh, I can see why you really want to keep this apartment.
Starting point is 01:10:27 It's so funny to think like we end up living our whole lives there. It's crazy. Yeah. Right? Adorable, you know. So, and I'm like, well, you know, now I'm thinking I should sell it. it because it's too big for one person. It's all hysterical, right?
Starting point is 01:10:42 I remember all of that. Like, it was like I watched it yesterday, which I kind of did. Yeah. That is, and then what, how does that? So then he says, well, I have a buddy who's selling his apartment if you want to see it. And I'm like, okay. That's right. I'm so not Charlotte-y in a weird way, right?
Starting point is 01:11:00 Because normally Charlotte's very clear. Like, yes, I wanted to do this. No idea. I'm like, I don't know. You know, then I'm like, okay. It's kind of like you said through the whole. episode with him, you're kind of like, okay. Yeah, definitely. So we go to this Bachelor pad, which is very funny, and it's leather. I remember that, yes. I don't remember it at all
Starting point is 01:11:18 filming it. I can see you too standing there. Yeah, we were, I remember discussing things, because he is walking around a lot, right? He's doing different acting things also, right? And I'm just standing there, do you mean? I think Evan was very much, and he's going to come and he's going to tell us, I think he very much was like, I'm going to make my mark. Like, I'm going to do things differently. I'm going to shove this muffin in my mouth. I'm not going to eat politely. I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. Like, he had ideas. Right. Okay. Which was great, right? Because he was different and he has a lot of energy. Like, there's a lot of positive energy. Do you know what I can't respond to it? I think that's the other thing that I see when I watch it is like, I'm supposed to be
Starting point is 01:12:01 responding on some level. Right. But then also there's all these ideas of what I think is attractive or not attractive or blah blah blah blah you know what i mean i'm stuck in my head about it a little bit but i'm also just not responding to his pure energy you know which is what i think i would have wanted to do right yes but i know i'm going to get to you know what i'm saying so then we just kind of like launched each other he starts telling me like i can't think of anything but your pink lips it's so cute and i think after tray right after tray yes in that crazy dress that that's one wearing that a pulsed dress and that am i wearing the glass i'm wearing the glass and am i wearing the I have no idea.
Starting point is 01:12:38 Am I? I'm, oh my God, I'm wearing the car. I know why. It's weird. That's so weird. With the headband? It's really crazy. That is so wild.
Starting point is 01:12:50 I know. I think you guys were so taken over trying to dress the pregnant one. What do you mean? That you're like, just wear this. Just wear this. It's fine. Do you mean? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:13:00 Also, I think we were trying to contrast Harry and Charlotte, right? I was just getting ready to say that. Yeah. Yeah. So then we have sex. Park Avenue versus. But really driving it at home. It's weird.
Starting point is 01:13:13 It's like nerdy Charlotte. I don't think that's probably aged well that outfit. New Red Bull Dragonberry and Tropic Berry Energizers now at McDonald's. Starting point is 01:13:42 When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything. Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
Starting point is 01:14:27 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinero and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without
Starting point is 01:15:02 asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people, and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you're a solo.

This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks pride and prejudice and love island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having. I'm going to have to look up this story.
Starting point is 01:16:10 I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is the Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place. Listen to pro society on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get. your podcasts. See you between the pages. On big lives, we take a single cultural icon.
Starting point is 01:16:48 People like Jane Fonda, George Michael, Richard Pryor. And we pull apart the story behind the image. And we do this by digging through the BBC's vast archive. We're talking iconic moments in broadcast history. I'm not just a boxer. I'm educated. I can talk all week on millions of subjects. And forgotten interviews that change how we see these giants of our culture.
Starting point is 01:17:10 Well, if changing the system from the ground up is revolutionary, then I'm revolutionary. We're here for the messy, the brilliant, the human version of our heroes. I mean, when I go on stage, I like to dress as slutty as possible because it makes me dance better for some reason. I'm Immanuel Jocci. I'm Kai Wright. And this is Big Lives. Listen to Big Lives on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts. So we have sex.
Starting point is 01:17:44 Then cut to I'm at a gay bar with Anthony, which I, Do not remember filming, okay? Like they're on the bar dancing, you know, and we're just sitting there. Now, this is the second time it's happened because there was another one that I went to with, the blonde guy who, the town and country slash whatever we called it, Home of Garden. Right? So this is the second time I've gone to a gay bar with Anthony, which is great, right? So Anthony's there and I'm trying to ask him, how do you go about just having sex with someone?
Starting point is 01:18:18 not being, you know, into them. And I try to explain that this is not someone I would even date. Yeah. And that he's not very attractive. Yes. And he tries to tell me, oh, it's great. You know, you just say like, you know, get out, you know, whatever like this. So then they show him in my bed and I'm trying to be like, he goes, what he says something nice.
Starting point is 01:18:43 I can't remember what it was. And I'm like, no, no, this is just sex. You know? And then he's like, hey, do you want to have dinner Saturday night? And I'm like, no, no, no. This is just sex. No, no. And then I say like something like, you know, so you can just, you know, put your jacket on and get out or something.
Starting point is 01:18:59 And then I say like, is that all right? And he goes, okay, sure. It's like pretty funny. But I don't totally know if I'm doing the best performance, frankly. I just don't know. I'm not sure. I feel like it could have been funnier. Retrospect.
Starting point is 01:19:14 Yeah. Because I'm playing this idea and I'm in between. things. Right. But I'm not sure, like, and you're not an objective person either, but like objectively, do you feel like Charlotte likes Harry?
Starting point is 01:19:25 Not yet. Not yet. It's interesting. I don't know when it's going to happen. I really, I think it's the wedding that we go to in the fake Hamptons in New Jersey. Remember, we're there,
Starting point is 01:19:36 and he, Harry does something, says, he waxes his back, which is awesome. I left that out. So when he gets out of bed, I mean, He's waxed it in 506? No, he has not waxed.
Starting point is 01:19:50 This is the first time we're seeing it. He's a beast. Insane. Okay. And that's the line. I'm not beauty. I'm someone and he's the beast. There's a line, yes.
Starting point is 01:20:01 But it's over the top. Like, what were we doing? I mean, it's standing straight up like two inches. And I remember him being stressed about that. I can't wait to talk to them about it. I can't wait to hear it. Like, we're just, pushing every limit.
Starting point is 01:20:16 You know what I mean? I mean, it's a lot. I could actually, I can imagine MPK going, no, thicker, more. It's like you could just braid it and maybe like just brush it and braided.
Starting point is 01:20:31 How funny though. I guess. I mean, when I'm watching it, I didn't really think how funny. I thought poor Evan. Really? Yeah. It's a lot.
Starting point is 01:20:40 Because there's no hair on his head. Do you mean? Even funny. So it's just like, It's just like growing like a chia pet. You know what I'm saying? Like there's just so much of it. It's fully bonkers.
Starting point is 01:20:53 I love it. Oh my God. You don't even look at that. That's horrible. That is brilliant. That is so funny. You think so? I do.
Starting point is 01:21:03 It's like poor Charlotte. Poor Charlotte for sure. You really are like, what is going on? Yeah, maybe that's why I'm acting. I don't know. I think I'm very... It is not clear at all that I'm going to fall for him. I don't think, except that he's incredibly nice to me.
Starting point is 01:21:20 I mean, I say different things to him, and he's just like, okay. Like, it's so attractive. That part's so attractive, right? For poor Charlotte, who's, like, just tried so hard with Trey for so damn long. Now, in an episode, do you have, in episodes, I don't know what happened on your end. Did you have lots of conversations with MPK? or does that happen? When does that happen where MPK is like,
Starting point is 01:21:49 this is what's going to happen? Yeah. And I want you to. Before the season. Before the season. Wait. Yeah, before the season. And then sometimes things change.
Starting point is 01:21:57 But most of you know the big arcs before the season. Right. And I don't totally remember. Did he talk to you? I don't know if I knew. And I think the reason I didn't know was because of the pregnancy part of it all, right? Right. Because we had the plan, but then we had to kind of rejigger the plan, right?
Starting point is 01:22:17 Yeah. Because we didn't know what was happening. And then, and I'm not going to, I'm not going to belabor this. But do you remember how once we went home we didn't know when we were going to come back? Yeah. And I remember one time someone called me and was like, I read in the National Enquirer when you guys are coming back and that you're going to do this many. And I was like, what? And it ended up to be totally true.
Starting point is 01:22:40 Really? Yes. And I was like, I am finding out the news from the National Inquirer. Yes. What is going on? Right? Craziness. In the end of Samantha's journey, she's happy to go back to New York.
Starting point is 01:22:54 She is. And she wants to fly. Yes. And she's going to fly first class because she got the tickets. Yep. She's been, oh, and she got her a Xanax or no, a Valium or a, she brings her pills. Always pushing pills. I know.
Starting point is 01:23:09 I was like, wow. Wow, those were the days. She hands her like playing tickets with a little envelope, and she says something, something, and Herkas, I can't remember what she tells her she got her. This episode is off the rails. Right? It really, really is, but really enjoyable.
Starting point is 01:23:28 Action-packed. Action-packed big time and funny, like I left out lap. So this was really fun, Molly. I have no idea if we stayed on track. Do we ever? No, we don't, but that's okay. Molly is going to stay with us to you guys, and we are going to come back later in the week and do some reminiscing. We brought some things.
Starting point is 01:23:49 Yay. Digging in the trunks. Digging in the trunks. Looking in the attics. Looking in the attic. Going in your closet. I did. Did.
Starting point is 01:23:59 Oh, my closet, my Charlotte closet. Yes, we got some pictures, you guys. Some outfits that didn't make it. Fun. It's trippy. Yeah. Yeah. Enjoy.
