Hi, I'm Kristen Davis and I want to know, are you a Charlotte?
Hi, you guys.
Cynthia is back.
I'm here.
I'm here.
So exciting.
We were here last time in New York and we missed you because you were upstate with
Gildedade.
Yes, Albany, Troy, those kinds of places.
Right, somewhere up there.
I know.
It was really sad not to have you.
So we're really happy that you're here.
I was said to. I know we have a lot to cover because so many things have happened and we're like, what was Cynthia?
What can Cynthia tell us about X, Y, or Z?
So I've taken some notes about those.
I know.
But mostly we're here to talk about one of my favorite episodes, which is I Heart New York, where you have Little Brady.
I do.
I do.
It's such a great episode.
And I had remembered it being really wonderful, but I hadn't really, I wasn't that clear on it other than
that it was in relationship to 9-11, that it was, because we had filmed it before, but it aired
after.
Right.
Because they had held it till winter for some mystery reason, which I think was involving
the Sopranos, not actually 9-11.
But they split us up into, you know, two seasons.
Got it.
Like when they started doing stuff like that.
And this is season four, right?
Exactly.
So it's like, I think we, I think we might have filmed 18, like so many.
Wow.
Isn't that crazy to think about?
Like compared to how it is now, where we're lucky if we could do eight or ten or whatever.
I know.
But yet, still so privileged as opposed to 26 or, you know, regular TV.
Oh, regular TV.
Right.
But I mean, like when I did Melrose, that first season, the only season I did, we did 36.
Insanity.
That's hard to imagine.
Right?
But it was on sets and they wouldn't let you really move.
You know what I mean?
Because they had the shots set up.
their minds. Exactly. And it was like super close up and whatever, like blocking.
Cookie cutter a little bit. Exactly. Yeah. You can say it.
Totally. It's fine. It's fine. That's what the show was. You know what I mean?
Yeah. Yeah. Our show obviously not. Right? Which is the great part, but also like
why we were, you know, never sleeping and whatnot. Now, what, so wait, I have so many things,
so many things. So let me try to think linearly. Do you remember when Michael Patrick told you
that Miranda would in fact have a baby?
I don't really remember.
But, I mean, I don't remember the specifics,
but I do remember being shocked.
Right.
I mean, I was so shocked when they got Charlotte engaged.
Right.
And then there were three.
Right.
Right. Yes.
I mean, it was like, this is a show
about four single women and dating and love and friendship
and breakups and bad sex and good sex.
Right.
Right.
Sexual politics.
Right.
You know.
Yeah.
Men and women.
So that was, I mean, for me, that was the moment when I kind of thought, well, all bets are off.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
If they can get Charlotte not only engaged, but married.
Right.
That we're going to, we can break all the rules.
That's true.
And I think that was what was great about it, but also scary.
Like I remember when you say that line and then there were three, I was like, oh, no.
They're going to leave me out.
Yeah.
What's going to happen?
Oh, my gosh.
And also, because, like, it seems kind of sad.
There's a sadness to it.
And then there were three.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I do think, I mean, it's hard for me to remember the, you know, what I thought about it.
Because I think for me, I'm always so rah, right?
I'm like, oh, amazing, amazing.
And I remember that I thought Charlotte was going to get pregnant.
Right.
And that they were going to juxtapose us and our mothering techniques.
Well, I remember the stuff that Michael Patrick said, right, which was,
like after a certain number of seasons, Charlotte is beautiful. Charlotte is warm. Charlotte is
brilliant. Charlotte is everything you would want in a partner. So if her number one goal is to get
married, you know, she can have some mishaps for a while, but eventually she's got to get married.
That's a good point. Right. Yeah. And so we can't keep making this ridiculous thing that like,
this is her goal and it's not happening. That's true. So the,
The fun thing is obviously the cream pie is like she gets married and it's a disaster, right?
It's not what she hoped for.
And so to get Charlotte pregnant and to be a mom, that, again, that's the number one thing she, this number two thing she wants, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So there is like, but who, I mean, I suppose Samantha getting pregnant might have been the most extreme.
That would have been crazy.
But Miranda pretty equally so.
I agree.
And that's what's so great.
tension between Charlotte and Miranda about like you're having the life I want to be having,
you're having the baby I want to be having.
Yeah.
But yeah, I mean, I was just, I guess I was the only one of us that was a mom at that point.
You absolutely were.
Right. So I guess in some ways it was, because they do steal all this stuff from our lives, right?
Right.
So I guess it would make some sense that like, oh, she knows about being a mother.
Let's make her a mother.
But I think it was more the funness of Miranda, not maternal at all, you know, very confused about her own femininity or lack thereof.
And also Steve, right?
Like feeling like he's absolutely not for you.
Right.
Which when I'm rewatching, I'm like, what's going to happen?
I mean, I know what's going to happen, but how do you get there?
I have no idea.
Because that was the other thing that Michael Patrick said in the same way that what I just said about Charlotte was true.
Miranda was so cynical and bitter and brittle.
And he was like, if we just keep going,
she's just going to break.
So instead of keep walking her down the road
of archness and cynicism, it's like let's melt her.
Right.
And that Steve is the person who will melt her
because he doesn't play games because he's really into her.
He's really up front about it.
Right.
And he's not an alpha.
He's not in competition with her.
It's not that kind of the battle of the sex is.
Right, right, right, right.
Who's wearing the pants?
Who's the boss?
Who's the alpha?
Miranda's the alpha.
Totally.
Everybody knows it.
Right, right.
But did you know, like when, so when he said to you, you know, you're going to get pregnant,
you're going to have a baby.
Right.
And, I mean, obviously that's like a huge, huge change.
And it takes, you know.
know, it's such an interesting way that it, I mean, I love how he did it. And I remember at the time,
like, really feeling like this is so great and brave that you're going to debate having the
baby, not having the baby, which makes perfect sense. Am I going to have an abortion? And we'll all
talk about the abortions we've had. Right. And that was so great. So great. And it's not happening on TV.
And I think Planned Parenthood really worked with us on that. Did they? I think so. I think so. I think they were in on it.
in the same way that, I guess, not glistened, but glad, I guess, worked with us on, you know,
and just like that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Like the non-binary stuff and the trans stuff.
Right.
So, yeah.
And I, you know, of course one remembers the things that were pitched, but then we never had time for.
So what?
Well, do you remember when I, when Miranda starts dating Captain Crunch?
Captain Crunch is the guy at the gym.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And isn't that the same, or I guess maybe it's Mark Foyer's scene?
The guy who she's running.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
I don't think Mark Forrest's the running.
That's a different guy running.
Okay, well, whoever it is the running guy, oh, I guess that's the...
Because you're going to be in the marathon.
Right, I'm going to be in the marathon.
Yeah, and he doesn't shower or some such.
I don't know.
Some such.
But anyway, so they established that thing that Miranda was going to be in the
marathon and she was right. Right. And, but that was dropped almost immediately. Do you remember? Like we had one
episode and then we never hear about it again. Yes. It was only one. Yes. So one of the things that was supposed to
happen was that Miranda, part of Miranda's many different pains and about and anxieties and
disappointments about being pregnant was she's not going to get to run the marathon. So one of the
things that was going to happen was Steve was going to run the marathon for her.
Oh, that's adorable.
And we were all going to be there cheering him, you know.
That is so cute.
And I can't remember if he was going to, like, be wearing a picture of her or, I don't know,
something like that.
Oh, and we didn't have time?
No, we didn't have time.
Too many plots.
Well, for sure.
I mean, it's packed.
Like, that's the other super impressive thing.
Obviously, I know this because I remember just vaguely how many balls were in the air at all times for production.
and why we were working, you know, 24-7 or whatever.
But when you watch it, it's just impressive.
It's so dense. It's so dense and compact and economical.
And amazing.
You know, it's so good.
But one thing I was thinking when I was re-watching it, so you get pregnant, you debate,
and then you have the baby, which is beautifully handled and, you know, my upset and whatever,
I love it all.
Right.
When did you know or did you know that you would actually end up with Steve?
Like was that part of the plan that the melting of Miranda?
You know, you mean end up with Steve in the final, like,
married and living together, raising a kid together.
I mean, you know, I think that,
because we haven't gotten to the Blair Underwood of it all.
No.
Right, yet.
So I think that Blair Underwood really gave Steve a run for his,
David Eigenberg run for his money.
I mean, no joke.
And I think.
I do think Michael Patrick came to me and asked me what I would like.
What?
What, you know.
Which one?
Which one?
Amazing.
And I think I probably said Steve, but I probably also said Steve because I thought,
you wanted me to say Steve, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And because, you know, it's always like biological parents, they want them together.
Yes, you know.
I do know.
So.
Oh.
So yeah, so he did have a conversation with me about it.
So it really could have gone either way.
Well, at least he made it seem that way.
I'm not sure that was true.
Because I think for Michael, like Steve was so many things, but also Steve was a chance for Michael to do all his Catholic stuff.
I know.
I mean, when we get to the baptism, I was like, wow.
I mean, it's beautiful.
The drinking of the grandmother.
Right.
Yes.
is like really working some stuff out.
All the Irish tropes.
Yeah.
I mean, but it's so beautifully done.
Yeah.
But it's also like he really takes such a risk.
Like once a mirror shows up, it really got, I mean, it's so great.
But we're in like almost a different world, a different show in such an interesting way.
Because it's both comedic but also.
Deep and beautiful.
Right.
But also beautiful, like the music.
And also it's just so many new.
characters, which is so much like when you have a baby with someone or this whole family
descends on you, right?
It's very much like that as a viewer, right?
Because we've never met her.
Right.
But I mean, I feel like, I mean, Trey obviously has a lot of problems.
Yes.
He's emotionally cut off.
He's, has a hard time getting hard.
I remember that, yes.
Right.
But also, he's very nice.
Yes.
And he loves Charlotte.
Yes.
So they bring in.
Bunny to really be the problem. Right. And Steve, you know, has even fewer problems. Yes. And is so
sweet. Right. Oh, that's true. You need the baggage of the mother-in-law. Most definitely.
To be the difficult thing to grapple. Most certainly. And also she's just so, so opposite Bunny in so many
ways, right? Oh, yeah. It's really refreshing. Right. Right. It's so great. I just think also like,
I mean, Bunny for me, and maybe this is because I was involved with it. I don't know if I
objective. But she was like peppered in in the beginning, you know, and you didn't totally,
you weren't sure. You're like, oh, and then it just gets worse and worse, like little bit by
little bit. And then you're like, oh, it's a horrible situation. Right. Whereas Amir just
gets out of the cab and you're just like, whoa. Whoa. It's going to be some trouble.
Right. I mean, in a great, great way. And your reaction is so good. But also before that,
you say to him, like, you never had a mother. And you're like, you know, I've never even heard about
your mother, now the ma, ma, ma, we got to get the baby baptized for my mom. It's so good.
Anyway, that's part of what's so refreshing about rewatching is because when you were in it,
there's so much going on and you can't really like realize the beauty of everything that
shows up that they create, that Michael creates and all the writers create. So, so good.
But okay, back to the baby for a second. So, as we all know, so you had your first child
before we ever started the show. Yes, Sam was like, I think, eight months. I think.
I think eight months when we did the pilot.
Yeah, like six, eight months.
I remember you had like a little picture of Sam on the front of your notebook that you had.
And I was like, oh, you have a baby.
And you were like, yeah.
And I was like, aren't you worried?
And you were like, no.
You're so.
I thought, well, I need to be like this woman.
This woman's like got it going on.
So I had a picture of Sam on the cover of the thing.
On your notebook.
Yeah, it was really cute.
Little baby picture.
So adorable.
And I remember when Sam would come to the trailer
and sit in the makeup chairs and everything,
and you were just unbothered.
You were not worried or anything.
It was so amazing.
You know, my mother had always worked.
You know, my mother was the main breadwinner in our family.
And, you know, one of the great things about my mom, you know, she worked in an office.
She worked at the Seagram's building, which I passed on my way here this morning.
And she, and I would just visit her at work a lot.
Yeah.
Or it felt like a lot.
Yeah.
And she would always, I could call her at any time.
of the day with no matter how small the question and she would almost never sound like hurried and
whatever.
Yeah.
That's a good example.
Yeah.
And also, obviously, when you're an actor and a production, particularly one of the leading
actors, so many allowances are made for you and your children.
I mean, I didn't feel that way, though.
I felt like you were, I mean, the only thing I remember at a certain point is that Sarah
Jessica and I would be the ones working all night Friday night if we were in the
studio if we weren't doing a group scene right she would be on one stage and I
would be on the other because they wanted to try to let you go home I don't even
know that I mean I don't know if it was that often it was just when they could
try I remember I remember Sarah Jessica said after she had James Wilkie she said
this thing to me she said you know before I had a kid and we would you know you
would be finished with your work for the day and you would stay behind at the studio
and do some stuff yeah and she was like I could never understand
why you didn't just go right home.
Now I understand.
I remember that as well.
Also, like, and I remember both of you after your second babies came, right, when
James came and Charlie came for you, and you would just be like both of you puttering
around or whatever, do you know what I mean?
It was cute.
Get some emails done.
Right, like trying to organize.
Absolutely.
Before you go home to the other job, basically.
Right.

It is impressive how you were able to do it, you know, because it was so intense.
Yeah.
Like people, and I think about this in terms of my own memory because I have like such a great
memory for so many things.
And then at a certain point, it's less.
And I think it's because it just became so big.
Everything became so big.
Yeah.
Like the work, but then also all the press.
Right.
Do you remember this time of like when the show kind of hit?
Well, I remember it.
I remember the Time Magazine cover.
That's what I remember.
Yeah, that was shocking.
Right.
And I remember when people started massively talking to us on the street.
Right, right, right.
Like, it was a shift.
Like, people always say actors who come on are like, oh, it was the biggest show in New York.
And I was like...
Not initially.
I think to actors maybe, but not to the world.
Right.
Right.
And then for me, third season is when it, like, bumped.
Yeah, I can't.
Right.
I don't have a Emmy.
Is that when, is that third season?
No, Golden Globe.
Golden Globe.
Golden Globe first, because then Emmy was shocking.
But Emmy wasn't that long after.
Right.
But do you remember our first Golden Globes?
No.
Oh, it's so good.
Okay, so we have the pictures and you're...
Well, it's the last season of Friends, maybe.
They're there.
I remember being there.
Yeah, I think they're there.
Did you know who they were?
I did.
And Brad Pitt was with them.
Oh, yes.
Oh, my God.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
And I remember they didn't win anything.
And they were like, we're out of here.
Oh.
I don't remember that. That's interesting. I remember that it was raining and my hair went like wild.
You know, it was nice and then it wasn't not. And we didn't have stylists, you know, because it was back in the day.
At the Golden Globes?
Yeah, we didn't have stylists. We just were on our own. I don't know.
Oh, going around to designers.
Yep. And like I bought my dress at Richard Tyler. It was in the window. And I bought it because I loved it.
And Sarah also wore Richard Tyler. And there was another woman at the Golden Globes wearing my dress.
Not an actress, but like an executive's wife or something.
It was red.
Like, the only time I've ever worn a red dress.
It was like dark red and it had like kind of a off the shoulder.
It was very romantic.
It was very me.
I can't remember.
It was like black and red, like kind of Victorian-inspired-ish, you know.
But simple compared to later, you know what I mean?
And you're wearing like a silver.
I'm wearing that silver thing.
I can't remember the designer's name.
But yeah, and I was pretty skinny at that point.
You were.
I was very skinny.
Yes.
Yeah, I like that outfit.
I can't remember they
We'll get a picture out.
I really like that.
You don't remember when we went and we went up on stage
and we're just like,
what are we doing here?
You don't remember this?
I do kind of remember that.
And Cindy was there and Jenny was there.
Everybody was there.
Everybody was there.
He's got his curls.
Darren's there obviously.
There's a pack, a huge pack of us up there.
And I remember because they would put the film people
in the bottom, you know, and then us and the
The peasants up above.
But it was fun because you could watch.
all the film people. You watch the film people. Yeah, it was really fun. And then we had to walk through the film people to get up there. And Julianne Moore was there who I was like such a big fan of. And she and barred her husband were like toward the front. And I felt like she was more excited than we were. Like we were trying to get up there. And she was like levitating like, oh my gosh, she knows who we are. You know what I mean? And later we talked and they were so sweet. So, so sweet. And just the generosity, like the sweetness, you know, of the industry kind of embracing us. I remember.
that and be like, wow. Wow. It was fun. And I think we shared hair and makeup back then.
Yes, I'm sure we did. Because we didn't have, you know, it wasn't, we weren't knowledgeable or whatever.
We were like, yeah, do her, then do me. It's all cool. Anyway, I remember that part. I always
think that we should somehow have like an episode just about, I feel like that was another job.
Yes, going to the awards shows. You know, it like escalated. And then it became incredible, but it was also
pressure.
Yes.
And it was also, they were so long.
Do you remember?
Yes, they were very long.
People are like, don't you want to go back to the Emmy?
I'm like, eh, I mean, if I were nominated, of course it would be wonderful, but it is long.
It's long.
It's more fun to watch because you can get up and get food and whatever.
Anyway, okay, I'm back.
I'm back.
All right, these are some of our random questions.
There's a deviative minute from IHeart New York.
So, okay, there's an episode where Alan Coulter's,
directing and you have this cake situation.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Do you remember this that he shot this crazy thing?
Oh, yes.
And then Michael Patrick was like, no.
Oh, yes.
Okay, tell us what happened.
So this was the thing where Miranda's not having any sex and she's compensating for it
by eating chocolate cake.
Yeah.
And she goes to whatever the name of that fancy French patisserie is.
I can't remember the name either.
And she goes and buys a slice.
you know, every day or a lot.
And then she finally decides, I'm just going to buy a whole cake.
And then it's like $70.
And she's like, screw that.
So she goes and buys like a Duncan Heinz mix.
And she makes herself a chocolate cake.
And then she has a scene where she proceeds to eat piece after piece and she can't stop.
And so Alan Colter, to your point, when we would shoot for so many hours, it was like two in the morning.
And none of like, I don't think John Melfy was there.
Certainly Michael said he was not.
No one was there.
None of the adults.
None of the grownups were there.
And Annie had this great idea that it would be like Miranda going mad.
And it was, so it was a lot of quick.
And I wish someone had this footage.
I would so look, because he cut it together, I think.
Anyway, so there's all this footage of Miranda,
and she takes a piece, and she takes a piece,
and she puts it away, and she gets it out again.
And then she starts, like, you know, Renfield,
who is Dracula's, like, you know.
Progette or whatever.
Yeah.
Yeah, something.
Emanuensis kind of thing.
And so she's like,
right?
Oh, my God.
Like, eating the cake, like, rabidly
and, like, grabbing it with her hand.
And then finally, and she's like, got it all over her face.
And finally, the very end of the scene, she's got cake all over her hands.
And she slides down the refrigerator door and leaves this chocolate.
And it's, he wanted it to evoke like Janet Lee in Psycho with the blood on the wall kind of thing.
And Michael Patrick saw this.
And he was like, yes, have you lost your mind?
How is this possible?
And I was like, but it's so great.
It's so creative.
And he was like, are we going to open up the next episode?
And she's been institutionalized and we're going to go visit her here?
Oh, no.
You know, in the institution?
Because she's lost her mind.
Oh, no.
So we had to reshoot it.
Yeah.
Oh, I love Alan Coulter.
I love Alan Coulter.
Yeah, he's just pushing the boundaries.
Yeah.
So cute.
I do feel like Miranda has such a very fascinating through line of food.
Oh.
Like, you remember eating the cookie out of the trash?
That's the cake out of the trash.
That's the cake out of the trash.
Okay, wait, isn't there a cookie?
There's like a big chocolate chip cookie thing.
I think she, I think Blair Underwood gives her a cookie that says, I love you or something.
Yes, I'm not there yet.
But yes.
I think so for Valentine's Day or something.
Yes.
Yes.
And she eats it not only because it's delicious, but she wants to make it not have happened because she doesn't think that she loves him.
So she's trying to eat it to make it go away.
Got it.
That's interesting.
I knew there was something interesting.
And I remember that time you were eating the salad in the coffee shop.
And they were like, and had they written it in that it was in your teeth or did you just do it?
And then they were like, more.
Do you remember this?
And I was like, too, it's too much.
Oh, do you mean with the braces?
Maybe it's the braces.
Are there multiple?
Is there like a salad dressing one and then like a in your teeth one?
So the salad, right.
There's a lot of me eat, you know, I'm eating, eating.
Yes, yes.
But no, with the with the braces, when Miranda has the braces, it's olives in her teeth.
And they had to, and they had to, I guess it must have been.
makeup. I was thinking it was props. It can be props.
Make up like they would take these bits of olive and like like stick them in the.
And then I would try not to show it. Oh my God.
And not to knock them off. Got it. You know. Wow. Wow. I love all that stuff.
And then there's also when you're your order at the Chinese restaurant.
Yes. You know, and you have shame about it. Right. Right. I feel like there's a through line of her
eating stuff, which I like very much.
We can probably think of others, but I can't think that.
Yeah, I think it's really good.
And I feel like it's just so intensely relatable.
And in a way, it seems like all of us should have had.
Do you mean?
Like, for me, there's something about single women and food.
It's also something about, like, Miranda and her speed.
Yeah.
Right?
Everything she does, she does sort of aggressively.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And she eats aggressively.
Yes, yes.
You know?
So true.
Yes.
Right.
Or even that very first one in the pilot when she's like, you know,
Yes, with the chicken at the deli.
Right, with the chicken at the deli, right, the tongs.
Yes, and then you're sitting eating outside in your sneakers or whatever.
Right.
Oh, it's so cute.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, my God.
Yes, I do.
I really feel, we should compile those and look at them.
Yeah, I like it.
I think it's really good.
But no one never makes a big fuss about it.
It's just interesting.
It's like private moments also.
Right.
Like good, private, single woman, private moment.
But then, oh, my God, I thought of a Carrie one.
Carrie talks about her secret single behavior.
It's like she puts jam on.
on crackers and eats them standing up.
It's a really good.
In her socks or something?
Yes, totally.
In her kitchen.
Definitely.
It's adorable.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I think this is, I love this for us.
Okay.
Next one.
Do you remember Timothy Gibbs plays the hot cop and you have sex with him and you think he is too
sexy for you?
Yes, yes.
And you drink a lot.
Yes.
And there was a scene where you throw up on him.
Yes.
And they cut it.
Yes.
Do you remember all this?
Yes, I remember all of it.
So, and I think this.
This is Michael Patrick directing?
I feel like, yeah.
I think so.
Yeah, so right.
So the idea is right.
She gets so right and she says,
I may not be much to look at.
Or something kind of sad.
But I'm an amazing in bed or something like that.
Something crazy.
You're kind of like.
And she's pulling his clothes off at his belt and stuff.
And then, right, she's too much.
And she's in bed and she's on top of him.
And she's having, she's, yes, yes.
And then, you know, mid that, she kind of obviously starts to feel really like she's going to throw up.
And she stops.
And what they had was, so the camera was, it was in profile.
And the camera was over here.
And he was down there and I was up here.
And they had a tube over on the other side.
with a camera, hopefully couldn't see it.
And they had filled it with like...
Super, whatever.
Horrible, like white chunky suit.
Oh, terrible.
Like, horrible.
Oh, no, no, no.
And so she stops and then she has a thing.
And then she goes like...
Oh!
And she just opens her mouth.
And it's so it's not just vomit.
It's projectile.
Oh, my God.
So it goes like...
No.
Right?
On him?
Um, sort of...
I mean, it eventually winds up on him,
but just kind of like...
Like at the wall.
Okay, wow.
And that is dramatic.
And then there's a thing that after that happens, I think we then, we do a shot on her face of her.
And she's got like a little like honey gripping and like a little bit of like I think they put little nuts.
Oh no.
Like chopped up nuts.
Oh my God.
How horrible.
And then maybe she sort of passes out on him on top of him.
Oh dear.
And I always had thought, I always had been told or got the impression that they decided not to include that scene because it was too humiliating for Miranda.
Absolutely.
I think that's what.
But I was speaking about it with Michael Patrick not that long ago.
And he said, no, that's not why it was that they could, you could see the tube.
Oh.
And they could never get it really so that you couldn't see the two.
I thought it was all that it was just too much.
I don't know.
Wow.
It was probably maybe a combination.

Oof!
That's incredible.
Yeah, the telenovela.

I also feel like whenever we would try
to do something like special effecty,
we didn't really have time back in the day.
You know what I mean?
Like we were always just trying to like move on
and rush and whatever.
Right.
So I'm not that shocked.
Yeah, totally McGuire.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I also feel like it does sound really gross and like a lot.
It was really gross.
Like, ew.
And it was shocking.
But it was, it was shocking.
And maybe it was more shocking than funny.
Yeah.
You know, it could cross the line, right?
Because then he leaves her the note with the AA information.
That's terrible.
Terrible.
And then it did allow Sarah Jessica to throw up as Carrie in and just like that.
He just saved his vomit story for her and John Tenney.
Oh, because they did the tubes also.
On the street.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And that was, it was not in a sex situation.
And both of them were doing it.
Exactly.
And it wasn't their fault.
It was like food poisoning or something.
Right. So much better.
So much better.
Or I think they've been drinking a lot or whatever.
Something.
Something.
Yeah, totally.
Anyway, that is bizarre.
That is so bizarre.
All right, you have a lot.
Okay, do you remember when you, Miranda, are buying your
apartment and you have to keep saying just me, just me.
Do you remember this?
I really enjoyed that.
I remember Miranda checked more single boxes than a gynecologist or something.
Exactly, yeah, it's a whole thing.
Right, right, right.
And we talked to Jenny and Cindy both about this because both of them is so interesting
to hear what parts of their lives they were putting in, right?
Right.
And I think Jenny told us that now single women are the possibly biggest new, you know,
group of house buyers.
Right.
Something great, which is exciting.
But of course, back then, not necessarily true, right?
And, you know, even me when I go to buy my house, you know, there's all the whole
section for the other person.
You have to just be like, N-A, N-A, N-A, N-A, N-A, N-A, and A.
It's just like at school.
You know, like, well, where's your, you know, divorced person or whatever it is?
Right.
Where's the dad?
N-A.
N-A.
It's very hard.
Yeah.
It never goes away.
It's really annoying.
But I love, I don't think I realize.
at the time how, you know, real and pervasive that is. Right. And I think, right, and I think,
you know, a lot of women who are kind of, I mean, I think maybe this is less so now, hopefully it's
less so now, but buying an apartment on your own, you know, does it preclude, like if a guy,
you know, as, it's like a form of a virginhood. Yeah. Do you know what I mean? It's like, I'm waiting.
so we can buy a place together, right, whoever you are,
but I haven't even met yet.
Right, but also like now, I don't even know if people even think that, right?
Because it's so kind of out of people's grass.
Grass, right.
Like it's sad and kind of hard.
Yeah.
I think back then, certainly like in a Charlotte mentality.
Right.
Like you wouldn't buy because that is supposed to be what you're supposed to do.
Right.
It's like you wouldn't open a door for yourself.
Well, I totally would open a door for myself.
But yes, I know what you're saying.
Yeah.
But like the whole weird traditional, whatever.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I think also like.
But for Miranda, I think it was so, it was so buried.
Yeah.
Because she did have this thing.
She didn't have that.
She wasn't like waiting for a guy to buy the apartment.
But she did have a thing like, now I'm moving on with my life.
I'm buying this.
Am I always going to be just me in my apartment?
Right.
Am I going to die alone and no one's going to find it?
And the cat's going to eat your face.
Yeah, I know.
That was a really good storyline.
Because listen, it's real.
Yeah.
I mean, I think.
these things. And it's not like I'm
upset or whatever to be single, but I am like
and I might,
I might. We'll see.
But it is super interesting to think about
because as much as you think that you are not
tied to those ideas. Right. They're in there somewhere. They're in there somewhere.
Yeah, they are in there somewhere. Yeah. Yeah. All right, now you have a lot of
crazy, interesting sex scenes for a while. Obviously before
this part that we're at. But like,
I can't even believe this list I'm about to read, but
the licking of the butt.
Well, I think maybe that was the marathon guy.
Yes, because he didn't shower.
People were upset with me because they were like,
why didn't you talk about that he didn't show?
Because you guys are running and then you go home and have sex.
And everybody was like, they didn't shower.
And I'm like, okay.
I don't think that was what was happening for Miranda.
No, I don't think that was what was happening for Miranda.
But I do think it was what was happening.
Yes, exactly.
And yes, I think you're absolutely right.
That is the same dude.
Yes. Yes. And then also the sinful shower, which I think is Hickey, right? Yes. Hickey. So good. Yes. We had Hickey on. It was really fun.
Marathon Man. He was Marathon Man. He was Captain Crunch and Marathon Man. There you go. There you go. And Catholic guy. Exactly. You had a lot of guys. I had a lot of guys. I had the guy who liked to be spanked, but wouldn't admit it.
Oh, right. Right. Oh, yeah. I had the guy who watched porn while we were having sex.
Right. That was weird. Yes. I just Rob Rob. Rob.
Campbell, I just worked with him again.
No way.
I did.
Where was he?
What did you do with him?
He was playing Vanderbilt, I think.
Oh, my God.
Or Carnegie.
I can't remember if he was Vanderbilt or Carnegie.
That's amazing.
Oh, that is so cute.
Did you guys reminisce it all?
Oh, we did.
Of course we did.
We did.
Yes.
When you were, you know, I remember like it's nice to think about us being here and
casting all these actors that, you know, were theater actors or whatever.
Yes.
I mean, and I remember you would sometimes have ideas.
Yes, totally.
They would say like, oh, this guy, that guy.
Totally, totally.
Like, how involved were you in that side of it?
I mean, I've always loved, like, when I was in, you know, high school, I used to cast my friends as the Greek gods.
Oh.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah.
I mean, it's one of the fun things is like there's a juicy part, right?
Yeah.
I do that on, you know, Gilded Age when there's a, you know, part coming.
I mean, it's always so fun.
It's so fun.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you ever want to direct Gilded Age?
I would, I would.
I don't think it's going to happen, but I would love that.
Oh, I think you'd be so good.
Thank you.
It's a big, big show.
It's a big show.
It's a big show.
It's so big.
Good Lord.
So many people.
Yes.
No, I think you're a really good director, though.
I just want to be on record.
It was so much fun to be directed by you.
Oh, that's really nice.
It was good.
I loved it.
I loved it.
It was so good.
I think you think like a director.
Yeah, I think, you know, because I feel like, you know,
unlike you, I never went to drama school, but like my mother, my mother, technically, you didn't.
My mother was my, my only really acting teacher. And she was great, but I think actually, because she had
tried to be an actress and had not succeeded, but I think she was also really more of a director.
Do you know what I mean? And that's how she sort of trained me. You know, I'm very, not very method.
You know what I mean? It's like, I have an idea of, I mean, I guess I have an idea of how it should
feel. But I have an idea of how it should be and then I try and execute it kind of thing.
I mean, isn't that what we all do really, right? I guess the idea is like how do you do that,
right? So there's different ways people will try to get to how, right, it would feel.
Right. But I think for me, one of the things that you have that I don't have, because I think
you go to the theater so much and you have always your whole entire life, you and your mom would
go to the theater like every night of the week, if you could, right? If you didn't have other
things or whatever. Your eye, like your eye in terms of looking at something and analyzing it
is very, very sharp. Well, she would always, you know, she would always say that that it's like
when there's a perfect piece of art, like Hamilton. Hamilton is perfect. Yes. And you just go and
see it or listen to it and you let it wash over you and you marvel at it and you have no idea
how this perfect thing came into being. Whereas you, when you go see something that's like,
either terrible or hopefully not terrible, but like not great.
Not quite there.
It's like an autopsy.
It's like you can see all, like you, like Hamilton is seamless.
You can't see how it was created.
But when something isn't really working, you can see the spine and you can see the muscles
and you can see the veins and you can see how it's constructed and you see, yeah, this is what
they should have done here.
Or maybe I don't even know exactly what they should have done, but they shouldn't have done.
but they shouldn't have done that.
And that's what she and I would do.
And we would go to the theater.
We wouldn't just go.
We would then, we would have a postmortem and figure out what they did wrong.
And I think, like, if I think about how you and I would respond as we were going through our whole long journey, you know, if I would get a script, I would just be like, I love it.
And you would be like, oh, I, you know, this or that.
Like sometimes even, let's say I didn't love it, right?
Like that one thing that I can't stand where the guy shouts obscenities at me.
And I was like, I don't want to do it.
I'm going to go ask them to change it.
And you were like, no, it's really funny.
And I'm like, oh, I hate it.
I still hate it.
I still hate it.
I still hate it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But it is funny.
I can also see now it is really funny and also perfect for Charlotte, obviously.
Right.
I just obviously did not enjoy it.
Right.
For obvious reasons, right?
But I think sometimes it's because I'm also too close to it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But you are able to kind of pull back.
and look at things and how they fit together.
Have it fit together.
Which I think is super fascinating.
That's why I also think like your director's eye is so good
because that's what a director needs to be able to do.
Yeah.
And they would say to me, do you run a director?
I'd be like, no, because number one,
I don't want to answer questions all day to people.
Right.
You have to deal with every department.
I would just want to talk to the actors.
That's all I care about, you know?
I don't necessarily think about moving the camera
and the picture and the energy of the scene up
and down, whatever, you know what I'm saying?
I think about it in the moment, but I don't pull back so well.
Yeah.
Though I'm trying to do that more because as we have gone out into the world or whatever,
I sometimes think like, well, what would Cynthia think about this?
Like if I read a script, you know?
And sometimes I might call you and ask you.
I don't know, but like, you know, it's interesting to try to think, like, I'm going to
put my Cynthia hat on and look at this.
Like, what does this need?
You know, which is good, I think.
Yes.
Right?
I mean, they always say that, you know, what would Jesus do?
And I have people in my life, you know, you included.
Like in certain areas, like I think, I don't know how to deal with the situation, but I'll pretend to be Kristen.
I'll pretend to be Sarah.
I'll pretend to be my friend Josie.
I'll pretend to be whoever.
Like one time I took a many years ago, I took a singing lesson.
I remember this phase.
Right?
Yes.
Well, not that, but even before that.
Okay.
I took one singing lesson from a guy on the Upper West Side and he was like, you're terrible.
And he was like, I think you're not.
breathing around. Like he was like, he was very pessimistic. And he didn't know kind of what to do
with me. And he said, he finally said, who do you like? How they sing? Who do you like? And I was like,
I like Julie Andrews. And he was like, pretend you're Julie Andrews. And I did. And he was like,
well, that was better. Oh my gosh. That's really interesting. I mean, I think it can really
work. That's really interesting. Yeah. I remember this one time we were sitting on set. It reminds me
of this sitting on set and someone called me and wanted something from me. I don't exactly remember
what it was. And I was like, yeah, okay, yeah, you know, whatever. I was like, people pleasing, right?
And I hung up and you were like, what was that? And I was like, oh, this person was this thing.
And I don't really want to do it. But I didn't know what to say. You were like, this is what you're
going to say next time. You're going to say, let me think about that. I was like, that's so good.
It is a good thing to do. I can say that. Like, I needed permission.
I do.
I'm not always good at saying that, but it is a good thing to try and be in the moment and to, right?
It's a version of saying when somebody references something that they think you should know, and you're like, I'm sorry, I don't know who that is.
Right.
Totally.
It's like, I have to, you know.
Right.
I have to think about it.
Because, like, whatever your impulses in the moment is not necessarily your true impulse.
It's a people-pleasing moment, right?
But very clearly you could tell I didn't want.
want to say yes to whatever I was saying yes to, you know?
And I was like, yes, I have to like channel Cynthia.
It's like if you're in a dressing room at a store and, you know, sometimes you try on something,
you're like, I'm going to get this.
But if you're not like, try and walk away.
Yeah.
Do you know what I mean?
You feel like, oh, I should get it.
You know, it's sort of like, oh, I should eat the food they've given me at a dinner party.
Yeah, I don't do any of those things, which is interesting.
I don't try on clothes in the dressing room anymore because I've had just too many fittings.
I can't stand it.
Oh.
Right. It reminds me of a fitting. Right. And I don't care. I want to order it and try it on at home and send it back.
Right. It's better for me. Right.
Because there's no one there are pushing you either, right? I don't want anyone looking at it telling me yes or no.
And there is something actually. If you order something and then send it back, you're like, I could get $79 back. 100%. It's like you've gotten money when in fact you spent money, but you don't think about that.
Totally true. Like I love to see when they put the positive on your credit.
It's a great feeling.
But then also, I also don't eat things I don't want to eat.
Like it's interesting what things, because I'm all picky, you know what I mean?
But I'll move them around and act like I do.
I will do that.
I will do that.
I know what it's interesting to think about those things.
Okay, back to your weird sex scenes.
I might have gone through all the ones I remember or whatever.
The porn, yeah, yeah, this is on here.
The porn was apparently, yeah.
Oh, here's a different thing I wanted to ask you about because I am pretty sure.
So you have Brady, and then they have, there's a.
There's two kind of scary, immediate baby things.
One is that you get the poopie on your forehead.
Do you remember this?
Right.
Horrifying.
And Steve is there, and he's so adorable.
And he doesn't want to tell me or something?
No, he tells you pretty quick because you're like busy.
It's when Steve, it's a very interesting time.
Steve's like hanging around.
Right.
But you're not together.
Right.
And at one point he says, you know, that he's seeing someone else don't worry, right?
Right.
Because he thinks that you're, because you're like trying to push him away.
Right, right.
But really, you realize you're in love with him, you say.
Right.
I mean, this is when I go, like, I don't know what's going to happen.
I don't know what's going to happen.
I know what happens eventually, right?
But I also know Blair's coming.
Right.
What's happening?
Like, it's a very interesting tightrope that they created for you.
Right.
I don't think Steve does it intentionally.
I think he's trying to be a good soldier and do what Miranda wants him to do
and date other people and not be attached and not think we're married now because we have a baby.
Right.
But I think Miranda really needs that.
She needs him to be unavailable.
for a while because that's the problem with Steve, right?
That was obviously the problem with Skipper.
He was like always available.
I mean, there were other problems.
Don't even talk to me about Skipper.
But right.
But right.
I mean, I think Miranda needed to, you know, a little taste of like if Steve wasn't always
at her beck and call.
Right.
And Steve had other options.
Right.
Oh, that's interesting.

There's also a scene where
before Brady comes where you're putting together the crib,
but he's just sitting there, which is so funny because I have to put cribs together.
You know what I mean?
And it's hard.
It's so hard.
And you've got him reading the directions and you're mean to him.
You're like, it can't say that.
And he's like, yes, it says, you know, the A screw in the B hole, whatever.
And you're like, give it to me.
And you're like, oh, yeah, it does say that.
Right.
It's really cute and funny.
But first I say it in a patronizing way.
No, it says the A said it and the B said it.
Oh, that's what it says.
Totally.
Right. She's going to school him first, right? Definitely. And also you get the sense that maybe
if she just let Steve put the crib together, he could probably do it with less stress and wear and tear.
Yes. But she's both like, I'm a single mom. I'm going to do this, right? And she's also like,
got to be the leader. Yeah, it's so true. She's got to be the leader. It's so true. But there is a weird thing that happens when I'm watching him where
on the one hand I think oh he probably could do that and then I'm like maybe he couldn't because you know when he when you guys are together before the baby and he's like a child when he's like we should have a baby but he's also he is the baby he did that so believably that I'm like oh yeah no he is like he like when we were out at sushi or something yes you go out and he's and there's a baby there and you're like no and he's like yes but then he and he wants the puppy it's like there's a whole it's very well done
But it's also interesting because when I'm watching it,
the reason I asked about when you knew if that Steve was going to stare
or that you were going to have his baby is because sometimes when I'm watching,
I feel like they don't know, meaning the writers, haven't made a plan yet, right?
Oh, I think that's true.
Right.
They made a plan for that season or whatever.
Do you know what I mean?
Right.
Which is that he would want a baby and you would be like, well, you are the baby, you know,
which it seemed like he was.
Did she say that to him?
I don't know if you split it out, but pretty close.
But maybe I say it to you guys.
No, I do think you might get mad at him and say,
Like, you know, I can't.
I have to take care of you or whatever.
It seems like it.
But this is before he has the bar and whatnot, right?
Right.
He's just like a bartender and he stays up all night.
He doesn't have any ambition.
No, and you can kind of see her point, you know, which is, I think, what they do so well, right?
Because it's both true and then not true.
He is amazing.
And he is devoted to you.
Right.
But he needs a little kick in the butt.
And you give him one, which is good, which is good.
But at this point, then he's like, he's around, around, around.
You fall in love with him again.
emotionally, I think because he probably, you know, is around to help you with the baby, but you're so...
But he's not as needy.
Exactly.
He's not as needy.
But then also you're, you know, it's hard to have a baby and not, you know, date or whatever.
Right.
But you're going to try.
It's interesting.
Me rewatching it now, it's really interesting.
I also think just so much of Miranda's thing about guys, right?
Her, like, you know, like, you're just for sex, that's it.
kind of thing.
I think she has a,
we don't know anything
about Miranda's parents,
we don't know about anything
about any of our parents.
Right.
But I think she has this fear,
this deep-seated fear
that if I'm with a guy
who's like my guy,
you know, married or not,
but like my guy,
and we're raising a child,
like I'm going to be
in a subservient position.
He's going to be the boss.
Right, right.
And then when she starts parenting
with Steve,
right? He's neither trying to be the boss, nor is he a dormant. And so he somehow just sort of
instinctively finds that sweet spot for her that it like unlocks her heart and unlocks the
possibility of like being partnered. Right. That's super interesting. I'm going to have to watch
it all. I mean, as I said, when I'm watching, I'm like, what how do they? Right. How do they navigate this?
Right, because you can see all the pieces, you know,
which is what's so great about it, right?
And you guys have, I think, a great chemistry.
Yes.
At the time, I didn't really realize, you know what I mean?
Yeah, yeah.
I was, like, perplexed.
I remember at the time I was like, perplexed by the whole thing, because we weren't always there,
you know, when you're working, right?
Like together, you guys would be.
It's also, it's just so nice and refreshing to have a working class guy.
Yeah, especially in our world, yeah.
Right?
It's like we have so many blue, blue, blue.
and high-powered and do you know what I mean?
I do.
I do know what you mean.
It's like us in the clothes and the shoes.
Right.
And it's both nice because it's different and it's refreshing.
Yeah.
And it's also, it's nice because it feels real.
Yeah.
And our show is so much a show of contrast, right?
I was thinking about when we were talking about the Catholic stuff with Steve and his family.
it's like showing the baggage or whatever
the tropes that come along with the Irish family
in the same way that Trey was like
showing all the tropes and the foibles that come around.
The golf and the tennis and the...
Super was.
Yeah, yeah, totally.
Family.
But it's definitely in some ways the cliche,
but also it's just so well acting.
Like Anne Mira, I mean, she's just amazing.
Like, it's stunning.
Like, I knew it at the time.
She always comes from a, like, that's the thing.
She's such a good actress, Anne Mera.
And she always comes from a comic place, but there is so much pathos under.
So much.
So much.
Which is just great.
So incredible.
It's so good.
We're so lucky we got her.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So good.
We are.
So good.
And I can't wait to see more.
I'm like, I'd forgotten about all of this.
Yeah.
Like, this is why people love to rewatch our show.
show. And I remember when we were casting Neil Cunningham to be the grown-up Brady. I was reading
with different actors and, right, and there were different actors that we were considering,
many of whom were great. And I remember Michael Patrick and I talking about this one guy. And it was
like, let's take him out of the mix because we already have, I would think I was thinking about LTW's
I was like, we already have the Harry Potter.
We already have the chosen, you know, King Arthur.
You're right, we need a Ron Weasley.
Right?
Interesting, yeah, yeah.
We need that kid to, which is Neil was so great.
You know, we need a kid who seems like a New York kid, not a private school kid.
Yeah, for sure.
We need that energy because Miranda and Steve's kid is going to, you know.
Definitely.
He was so perfect.
Perfect.
So perfect and so good.
Yeah.
I know it's crazy sometimes to think about the whole trajectory.
Trajectory.
Right.
Yeah.
Like who would have ever, ever thought in a million hundred years?
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
It's crazy and good.
All right.
Let's see.
Okay.
So, so this question I have is about the breastfeeding.
So there's like the poopy on the forehead.
Right.
And then you breastfeed it.
And I'm pretty sure it was like a like a stand-in boob.
What we had, we had two things.
Okay.
We had a prosthetic breast or breasts.
Wow.
Two prosthetic breasts.
And they put them on you.
They put them on me.
Okay.
And they molded them and they put them on me.
And then I think there was a lot of time with makeup blending them.
Yeah.
Oh, I can't imagine.
But then we had an actual nursing mom.
Got it.
Who came in for when we need to see a baby.
literally because a baby can't nurse on these prosthetics.
No, that would be like, frightening.
Or we couldn't even get the baby to nurse, much less it would destroy them.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, that would be really weird.
Okay, so you had the lady and then you had the prosthetics, but you did have to wear the
prosthetics around.
Yes.
Oh, my, I don't remember that at all.
Well, only in the only when they're revealed.
Yeah, but I mean, and that's not that often, right?
I think just that once, right?
Okay, got it, got it.
So you did both to make to cut it together.
I think just the ones.
Got it, got it.
Got it.
Got it.
Got it, got it, got it, got it.
Okay, that's interesting.
It's not like I'm wearing them under my clothes.
Got it.
Now, and that's the other thing.
And, I mean, this is not really that important.
It's just, like, I think about it when I'm watching.
Because when we come back and we do the fifth season,
which is right after I Heart New York ends the fourth season.
Right.
We filmed it before 9-11.
Then 9-11 happened.
Then it airs.
And I talked to Michael Patrick about it.
Right.
Because he did tweak the voiceover at the end.
Remember the leaf falls?
And the episode is about the weather changing.
and also big moves to Napa, which I had fully forgotten.
Really?
Yeah.
I don't know.
I remember moving to Paris more than I remember Napa.
But you don't remember the line?
If you're tired, you don't take a Napa, you don't move to Napa.
I did not remember the line.
Wow.
It's weird, the things that stay and the things that go.
You know what I mean?
But it was great because I got to kind of relive the episode like Fresh.
Right.
And it's so interesting.
So good. And Chris is like at his...
Wonderful.
Top. With the two of them together.
The two of them together. My God.
And her outfit.
Oh, my God.
That little cutoff thing.
And the jeans.
Right. And that red wall.
Right. The red wall.
Because remember how it used to be beige?
I'm like, thank God that man is not living in that beige apartment.
But remember that whole thing where he paints it red?
Yes. Yes. He's trying to, you know, get outside the box.
He's trying to be a little more interesting.
He's trying to not just see wall.
Street, you know. Yes, and it works. It's better. But you know, it's funny because I just
recently did the Wesley Morris Cannonball podcast. Right. And we talked about three New York
movies, and he picked one and I picked two. And one of the movies that I picked was Breakfast
at Tiffany. Oh, so good. And I said it was, I also picked the taking a felon one, two, three. And I
wanted maximum contrast, gritty versus, you know. Beautiful. Beautiful. A high end. You
know. But I said I also picked it, not that we talked about sex in the city, but I picked it because
I was like, it's hard for me to imagine if there would be a sex in the city had there not been
at Breakfast at Tiffany's. Absolutely. And we have so many references. And there are so many overt and
covert references from the very pilot. You know, no one has breakfast. No one has affairs to, no one has
affairs to, no one has breakfast at Tiffany's, no one has affairs to remember. We have breakfast at 6 a.m.
And affairs, we try to forget as quickly as possible. Right. Right. I forgot about that.
Yeah. And, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, I think, is very,
holly go, um, um, cigarette-hander, or thing. Yes, yes, yes, I remember that.
And there are a lot of different... Remember, when I go to the window with Kyle of Tiffany's, they wouldn't
let us film in Tiffany's, but I put my hair up in, like, a casual updo, do you know what I mean for that scene?
and we're in the window of Tiffany's for the ring.
Like so many, but we don't say it.
You know, it's just there.
And she's so Holly-Go-Lightly.
Carrie is so-Hollicely.
And so having, right, having them dance to Moon River.
It's beautiful.
It's so beautiful and good.
And I wonder, because I re-watched it before talking to you.
And I just wonder, it's such a funny thing.
When I was a kid, I thought they were saying,
not two drifters, but two twisters.
Because having them twist to that song is so like off-kilter and great.
Yes.
But I thought that's the kind of detail that somebody in the writer's room must have thought that.
Absolutely.
Because it would be very hard to just come up with that.
Casually.
It must be.
I agree.
We should ask Michael Patrick.
That's going to be on the list for Michael Patrick.
Yeah, yeah.
Also, because it's a slow twist.
And it makes it so sensual.
So sensual.
And interesting for him to do.
And it's like, right.
And it's like, speaking of Harry Potter, it's kind of like that moment when Harry and Hermione
dance together.
Anyway.
I don't know.
Okay.
But it's funny because it's, it is very sensual, but it is also very like they're not
touching.
Formal.
Yeah.
But they're also not touching.
It's sort of, it's like, it's like seductive.
Right.
It's safe.
Which is kind of interesting because that's kind of where they are, which I think is what, because for me, also rewatching their whole up and down of the big carry thing is crazy.
I don't remember all this up and down.
And he's so profoundly unlikable so often.
Yes.
But like you remember when he goes out with the actress, the character goes out with the actress.
I can call her, but she can't call.
Yes.
She can call me, but I can't call her.
Yes.
And then he goes up to Aiden's Mountain House and they get into the fight in the country house.
I mean, I'm just like she can never look at big again.
Of course, I obviously know she's going to.
But it's like, ew, do you mean?
Right.
And the way that they're able to get them back is fascinating.
As a couple.
Yes, as that you even want them to be back.
Because in this episode, because he's moving to Napa, which again, I had totally forgotten.
And Carrie doesn't know, which is so interesting.
She just calls him because she's lonely and the weather's changing, which I'm like, Carrie, no.
But, you know, I'm not there.
and she calls him and then she goes over with the pizza,
which is one of the things that they cut together in the memes
of like Carrie's too needy and pick me.
Have you ever seen those things?
No, but I can imagine.
And for me, what I see when I watch that is she's in a comedy.
That's all I see.
Like she's in a comedy, do you know what I mean?
She's trying to be funny, right?
Like she's called him, she's come over, she's brought a pizza.
She's just being cute when he opens the door.
Like, why are you going to kill her for that?
You know what I'm saying?
But then she says the apartment.
It's empty and she's like, wait, what's going on?
And he's like, oh, yeah, I'm moving to nap.
And she's like, you weren't going to tell me.
Like, it's fascinating writing.
It's so good.
But it's also, don't you think it's also, I'm not only interested in you because you're a big, rich guy who can take me out to a fancy dinner.
I'm for the take-in pizza at home, no must, no fuss.
Absolutely.
Oh, absolutely.
I mean, yes, that's an inherent part of it.
You know, that he is like the anti-big.
He is 100%.
I don't know if I ever told you this.
When I went on, when Matt Lauer was still on the Today Show, did I tell you this?
No.
I went on there.
Scared.
About the show.
I assume it was about the show or maybe it was about some other project, but, you know, they always bring up sex and six.
I do know, yes.
And in a commercial break, he went off on Steve.
What?
And how much he hates Steve.
I mean, it was like insane.
And it was so, it was so, it was so, it was so out of left field, it was so, but also it was like
Steve's lack of alphaness and lack of dominance and lack of sort of male assertiveness.
What did you say?
I said, I don't agree.
I don't, I'm not really a, I'm not in the big camp.
I think Steve is like.
a sexy, loving guy. And I think Miranda's very lucky to have him. Oh, that's nice. That's good. That's good.
Wow, that is scary. Scary. All right. Thank you, Cynthia. That was fun. We will be back with Cynthia later this
week. We're going to recap IHeart, New York, which is season four, episode 18. It originally
aired on February 10, 2002, and it is when Miranda gives birth to Brady. It's going to be fun. We're going to
through it with Cynthia. Please join us.
