Hi, I'm Kristen Davis.
And I want to know, are you a sharp?
Charlotte. You guys, everybody, it's so exciting. Julie and Elisa are back. Second time. Love it so much.
And I believe this is this, is this your second script or did we miss one? Well, we actually wound up
talking about both scripts. Right. My mother's hair was sore. Got it. Got it. Got it. Got it.
So this was actually our third visit to the podcast because we broke that up into two.
Love it. Love it. Love it.
This was our first episode in season five.
Right.
And so this is the episode, Luck Be an Old Lady.
I hate to even say the title, okay?
And I have a lot of melancholy when I think about this.
And I'm dying because you guys were so young when you wrote this.
So we have to discuss all of the things.
I know.
I know.
And it aired on August 4th, 2002.
Wow.
I know, right?
That's crazy.
And it's yesterday.
And we're taping it on August 5th.
That's incredible.
Very cool.
Very cool.
Do the math.
Two minus 26.
Okay.
Shoot us all now.
Right?
It's crazy.
That's wild.
Here we are.
It's all good.
Happy to be here.
Because we're doing great, right?
We're doing great.
It's all good.
And I have so many thoughts about the subject matter now as opposed to then.
I'm sure.
Me too.
And I'm sure you guys do.
Yeah.
And this was directed by John David Coles,
which I literally do.
not remember whoever directed this.
John Difficold is very lovely,
but I remember so much about Atlanta City,
but not being directed.
That's really interesting.
I don't know why.
It's interesting, right?
Well, my memory, and I realized this was our third,
the third script we wrote,
the first script of our second season on Sex and the City.
Right.
And I realized much like giving
birth. I felt like our first birth was my mother word myself and it was like, obviously,
we worked very hard and we learned so much and all that, but it was a relatively easy birth.
And then our next birth was change of address. And that was harder. We had less time to write it.
We had a bigger rewrite after the table read. So that felt like our second birth was like
little harder.
Right.
Nobody told me that labor gets worse with your second delivery, by the way.
Interesting.
I didn't know this.
I don't need to.
But anyway, my point is, I did not.
This is not.
Wow.
Okay.
My point is for our third script slash birth, it was hard.
This was so hard.
Listen.
Well, I, yes.
It all came back watching it again.
Right?
I mean, please tell us everything.
Well, this is the most, I think this was
the maybe of all the scripts we wrote
for the show.
It was the most kind of academic
at the time, especially,
exercise because it was a very,
and this, the origin of it,
I know very, I remember very clearly
came from Michael. It was Michael Impulse,
Atlantic City. He had a,
vision about. Oh Lord. But this idea of the idea of old ladies and end of, you know, who you
end up with if it's not your, you know, your husband, your life partner. It's these women.
It's like your female friends. He had this very gut feeling about. And it felt like a fascinating
exercise and an interesting idea to play around with. But as we began trying to actually
write it, it just, it was difficult. Because the more sort of theoretical, the idea, the
harder it is to dramatize and to actually see illustrated. Sure. I have to confess,
and I've already confessed this. So like, it's like Michael's heard me tell this.
story, but
sitting in the writer's room,
beginning season three,
we're looking up at the whiteboard,
and I think we've talked on this podcast
and other people have,
is like we had a big whiteboard,
and you would,
first it was just like brainstorming,
you put up ideas, things that made us laugh,
stories, dates, bad dates,
people had.
But then once you get closer
and closer to mapping out the season,
we would put up, you know,
episode one, two, three.
And like anything we knew,
about the episode. So episode three, he was like, that'll be Atlantic City. And I decided for whatever
reason, I was like, well, we're not writing that. Like, I just was like, we had such these, like,
very emotional connections to my mother and myself, I'm to change of address. So I guess I decided,
like, that's somebody else's story. I don't understand that. Like, anytime he referenced Atlantic City,
I just like, I was like, that's not us. Like, I don't, I don't. I'm.
I'm not even going to worry about that episode.
And of course, they were all, one was sailors, right?
It was Fleet Week.
Right, right, right?
Yes, yes.
What the hell was two?
Number two was the baptism.
Oh, that's really good.
That's really good.
That's a great one.
Yeah.
So three was Atlantic City, four was.
And I'll never forget the day after the room, he came over at us.
And he was like, okay, guys, you're Atlantic City.
And I was like, wait, what?
Like, I wasn't being attention.
I was like, where are my notes?
So suddenly we were like, Atlantic City, what?
And we did have, we did have connections to Atlantic City.
Like I, my family had a house there for most of my life, not in Atlantic City, but in a town a few miles away from it.
So, and Michael knew that.
Like we're both, Julie and I grew up in Philadelphia.
and we, so it was a big part of, big part of our lives.
So that I think was why, yes, he match made, he match made that.
For sure, but you two were the youngest writers.
So that's also funny because this is all about aging and who are you going to end up with, right?
Like you guys are like 30 or something, like you're young.
Yeah, yeah.
Maybe 20 something.
Like you're young.
So this idea, first of all, of gambling, which Elisa can attest, I am so the opposite of a gambler that, like, when we...
She can't handle it.
We can't handle it.
We can't really either, but Julie really can't.
Literally, like, in that casino and we could talk this entire podcast about what it was like to shoot in that.
It was rough.
Okay.
Yeah.
But Elisa once literally, she was like, just have fun.
Just gamble a little.
And I was like, I can't.
And she literally gave me a little roll of quarters.
Oh, my God.
And she was like, Julie, you is this.
Like, to bend this, you can do it.
Did you?
No, because I'll tell you what Julie.
I'll tell you what Julie did, though.
Like when I am like this much like I can handle this much gambling.
Like give me a roll of quarters, put me in front of a slot machine,
and I can see if I can lose that little roll of quarters.
But Julie, every single poll, one quarter should be like,
oh my God, it didn't work.
No, wait, each one, what am I going to do?
And I was like, you can't do one at a time.
You're like, how is this fun?
How is this fun?
Well, for sure.
Listen, it's fully an addiction.
Okay, it's an addiction.
Yeah.
I don't gamble because I can't.
It's too stimulating in that way of like pushing on the addiction button, you know?
I'll walk like four extra blocks to save a quarter on a snap bowl.
So like I'm not losing a quote.
That is not fun for me.
I didn't realize you were that hardcore.
Wow.
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
That's cute.
Did you ever see when we went on Oprah, which must have been,
I don't know if it was during the show or for the end of the show,
and she asked us, all the four of us are there,
and she asked us who was the cheapest, and Cynthia was like me.
Oh, totally.
And she was so hard.
Yes.
And she said something about like, you know, I'm never sure if I should take a cab.
And we were just like rolling off our chairs.
Oh, yeah.
Because at that point, we were making good money and whatnot.
I get that.
No, it's a mindset.
It is.
It really is.
It really is.
And I know some people change when they are more comfortable later in life.
But like I'm...
But some people don't.
Yeah, you are hardwired.
I'm never to be able to get it.
Throwing money to the slot machine.
But the other thing I realized about this episode that was both dark, it was a dark episode.
Yes.
And I think it reminded me how hard it was.
We decided coming back.
to that season, season five, that first of all, it was a dark time.
We had just had September 11th.
Carrie was alone.
We very intentionally, we didn't want to come back and just do like guy of the week.
Like, wanted her to really be alone.
And it turns out not just like in life is that hard and for some people very dark,
but as a raider, it was very hard.
For sure.
Like give her a drive.
because we didn't want it to be surrounded, you know, targeted in a man.
But what I liked in the darkness of it was it was a rare episode where the reality of how hard it is to get your friends altogether.
Yeah.
I forgot that.
Yeah. I forgot that too.
The picture that she's like, it's been so long since we have a picture of the four of us in that runner in the episode.
I forgot that she just wants to get a picture.
of the four of them, which is so, like, just the...
It's so ahead of its time, right?
Like, in so many ways.
I mean, I feel like the conversations that we're having within the show are very much
cultural conversations now, you know, about aging because obviously the population has
aged, right?
And, you know, single women who are choosing to be single, but then also their friends
are so much more important, right?
It has that, all of that in it.
And she's saying, we have to honor this.
We have to put energy into it.
Like that little clip where she talks to Miranda.
on the bus.
And she says, like, we have to, you know, you have to commit and, like, you know, take care
of your friendships.
It's, like, incredibly prescient to the cultural shift towards honoring our friendships, especially
as we're getting older in life.
Like, it's amazing.
Well, and he was kind of having her own existential nightmare, you know.
Like, she was having that.
she was obviously so out of adjustment.
And you see in that scene, Miranda's like, great, can I read the freaking New Yorker now?
And Carrie looks really sad and upset about that.
And I'm like, it's so funny because you're a writer.
Hello.
Like read also.
It's interesting.
This was an episode where watching it again, and I wonder how I felt,
I wonder how much I felt this at the time that we wrote.
and shot it.
But like,
this is one of the more needy,
Carrie as a needy friend
than I've ever seen her before.
No, it's true.
It's true.
I was very much on Miranda's side on the bus
with the New Yorker magazine as a mom
and like picturing her as,
I had forgotten the whole baby,
docee dough with Steve.
Me too.
And I mean, she had had me going at the door
when she answered the door and said,
I'm sorry. I can't go.
You know, I can't leave the baby.
I was like, I was really good.
I was like, wait, who's that?
Who's that?
Is that Miranda?
Oh my God.
And then, gosh, she's kidding.
We didn't have kids at the time.
And I have to say there are so many things.
I know we've talked about that we go back and do differently now that we are moms.
But that was the one thing that is exactly true.
Like, first of all, that whole like, it's, I thought you were going to knock.
killed the baby on the weekends.
And I really good.
Yes. So good.
I totally felt every day when the kids were little like, I'll eat this thing alive.
Totally.
Yeah.
But then the fact that she was just like hot digity dog, get me out of here.
Yes.
Totally.
That was a hundred percent true.
And I stand by that.
I didn't feel that with the Gemma, but I did when I had two.
But I wasn't like hot diggedy dog.
I was really torn, but I think it's because I'm a single mother, which show is she,
but there is Steve, but whatever.
But like you have the guilt at the same time.
So I don't think I would have been openly hot-dickety-dog.
Do you know what I mean?
And I have a weird thing, and I don't know if you guys ever feel this,
where like to get out of the house is really hard, right?
Like they want things and you can't give them and blah, blah, blah.
But once I'm out, then I'm like, oh.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You actually hear the choir.
Yes.
I have to get some distance before I can actually feel decent about it.
You know what I mean?
Yes.
Yeah.
But I do feel like if we were writing this today, I think Miranda might have said a few more
things to carry about like, do you realize how precious this moment is that I get to read
a magazine?
Right.
I'm not taking anything away from our investment as friends.
Definitely.
This is gold.
That's a good point.
Yes.
No, that's a good point.
So I mean, I also was torn.
in the whole Charlotte Cary's scene later in the bar.
Me too. Me too.
Where, you know, poor Charlotte has been like, like, she's had a rough time, obviously,
but then also like, you know, she feels all uncomfortable about her age,
which no one seems to share with her, which is interesting.
And then she just wants some male attention, which is like,
yes.
Not that terrible for her, you know?
But Carrie's like, no.
No, I just told me it says, my daughter, we all watch it last night,
my whole family.
And Thelma, my daughter was like,
it's her birthday.
Like, why did she not letting her have a drink?
I really felt that too this time.
It's sad.
I was like mad at Carrie.
Yeah.
I know.
It's interesting.
I'm glad, though, in that when they're on the tram.
Yeah.
By the way.
And she just gets off.
I'm just like, well, she just leaves her there.
But I was really glad that Charlotte.
says when she's like, when Carrie's doing her whole thing, like, why even bother?
Like, they're all going to die in the end.
It's just going to be us.
And I love that you said, that's life.
Definitely.
Yeah.
Good for Charlotte.
I want these things.
Yeah.
And I want the mess.
I want the mess.
No, this is big growth for Charlotte.
Yes.
And it's interesting that Carrie does not say that's big growth for you.
You know what I mean?
Right.
Like she's in her own thing, which is interesting.
I know, and I wonder, like, were you guys aware of that at the time at all or no?
You were just focusing on trying to write her alone and what she was going through alone.
Do you know what I mean?
I think it's probably a reflection of the state we were in, I have to say.
I think it was a really dark time.
Yeah.
And I think looking back, yeah, we could say she was probably depressed.
I mean, she is presenting as someone who's depressed.
I'm not, I don't have a job for it.
I'm not actually a therapist.
Right, right, right.
She's like really struggling.
Right.
That way.
Right.
And I think we also juxtapose that with,
we had all just found out Sarah Jessica was pregnant.
And these are,
That's going to be this thing.
The season got small.
And so I think we, that was also a seismic shift for the show, the cast of the girl.
And I think it, I think the episode probably reflects that feeling.
It was both she's alone as a character.
She was alone and feeling terrified.
And I think, and I think maybe maybe we were so.
Lisa focused on figuring out what her actual internal growth was that maybe she, we sort of ran out of the real estate for her to sort of take in her friends as well to say, well, and you, you really are, you know, you've come a long way.
Even in that episode, you come a long way, Charlotte does.
For sure, which I'd also kind of forgotten about.
You know what I mean?
Like I had remembered that dress because that dress,
lives on on the, you know, internet.
But what I remember about it was feeling very stressed, you know.
And like a lot of, do you remember like the drama about what that dress would be?
Like, because I say, oh, I've gone to the shop in the casino, right?
It had to be so, I would say.
Yes.
I know I remember there what, but can you, can you refresh our memory about what that was for you?
I just remember.
I just remember.
Part of a lot of it.

All right, here we are with Luck Being Old Lady.
I am going to say that my Hyundai Hot Take
and this is rare, okay guys,
I'm going to say that it is Charlotte
in that crazy pink dress
that she supposedly gets from the gift shop
at the at the casino, partly because all I feel when I watch it is anxiety because I am taken
back to filming that scene in slow-mo where they pan up my body and just feeling like I wanted
to die. But I can say, since it lives on in Instagram and whatever, you know, that look
great and I should have relaxed. And it's nice to have those kind of weird moments on film
where you're dressing in a way that you would never normally dress. So I'm just going to, I'm
just going to give it to Charlotte this week. It's a Hyundai hot take celebrating iconic moments,
bold moves, and unforgettable style, just like Hyundai. There's a lot of things that I remember about it,
and a lot of it is my own anxiety, right? Because like, I don't, I don't ever really want to show my
legs. I always feel nervous about being like, um, like that level of, of sexy. You know what I mean?
Like tacky sexy or whatever. It's not my, yeah, totally not my confidence area or vibe or whatever.
And not Charlotte's obviously either, which is the point, right?
And so it's like this kind of stretch, you know.
So there was a lot of conversation because it was,
it also needed to be tacky, right?
Because we've said, oh, she's gone to the shop in the casino.
And Kerry says something about, no, that's for women who run out of money
and need to, you know, trade sexual favors.
What do you mean?
What does she say?
She says something like that, right?
Yeah.
Like it needs to look really tacky, right?
And what I do remember about it is there was a lot of, you know, stress on Pat's part about, you know, a tacky sexy, right?
Like, what is a tacky sexy?
And I would have to ask Molly, I feel like it was at the 11th hour.
Like, I think we found it in Atlantic City, turn it and I'm saying.
I think we had to actually go to Atlantic City to find that little.
Yes.
It was like a very.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Right.
Yes.
Right.
Today, as Thelma pointed out,
She was like, oh, girls would walk down the street in that.
Like, I know.
I know.
Yeah.
I know.
It's interesting, isn't it?
I know it.
But it was also like for us, right?
Like for us who, you know, we obviously had like very high end clothes most of the time.
It was like a tiny piece of polyester that was like barely stitched together.
And I couldn't get my mic pack.
My mic pack had nowhere to go.
So the reason I have this bag that.
you can't really see.
You can just see like a string.
It's like a weird.
And I'm kind of holding it because my mic pack is in the bag.
And the cord,
there's like a cord sewn onto the handle of the bag
to go up to the battery or whatever.
Do you know what I mean?
I have something on my bra strap maybe.
But like normally, too much information here,
we would sometimes put it between our legs, right?
For Sarah Jessica, she could put it on the small of her back.
But I have too much back there to put.
a mic pack back there and not see it, especially back then.
Like nowadays they're smaller, but back then they were not that tiny.
So it was like a whole drama, right?
So I'm kind of clutching that string on my shoulder because I don't want my mic to fall off,
basically, right?
I know.
I know.
It's a whole drama.
I love this is not.
I couldn't put the,
the mic would normally be on our chest, right?
Right.
But that thing was so there's no place for it to be.
So I literally think it's like right here on my shoulder.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you mean?
It was a whole crazy thing.
And I just remember feeling like it was just going to fall off me.
Like I did not feel like I was dressed.
Do you know what I mean?
Like it felt so uncomfortable.
Right.
So uncomfortable.
Also, I feel uncomfortable with people looking at me like that, right?
But the whole point was the slow-mo entrance in them to be all shocked.
And I just remember being just like, I'm going to die, I'm going to die, I'm going to die.
But I did fine.
You know what I mean?
You pulled it off.
Thank you.
The other thing I remember that was.
so stressful about shooting in that casino and just so everyone understands.
We had,
we had a very tiny window that they would let us shoot.
I remember we had to get there at like 5 a.m.
It was something insane.
Yeah.
Because we could only shoot till like three or four p.m.
It was a very short day for us.
Yeah.
But the day that we shot where,
um,
when the guy says to Miranda,
that whole thing where he's like,
move your fat ass.
We had to get that.
shot we were so close to the wire we were about to lose we were we're about to have to
get kicked out yeah and we had to figure out a way to shoot that in as few shots as possible and
I remember and this was long before I directed but I felt like this is all on my shoulders like I was
so stressed out and I was like John who actually directed it I was like how are we going to do this
We only have like 12 minutes left.
Like I was having a total, total panic attack.
And he was completely cool as a cucumber.
He was like, it's fine.
It's fine.
We're going to do this as a wonder.
We're going to do that as a wonder.
And you guys, I remember you all knew, obviously, how tight the thing was, just how little time we had left.
And I'll never forget.
You were all just, you were like laughing, kidding around.
And I was like covered in sweat.
a meltdown.
Yes.
And of course,
of course, like,
of course it happened.
It was fun.
That's funny.
Sometimes when someone else is stressed,
you can not be stressed.
Do you mean?
Yes, totally.
But then sometimes it's not the case, right?
Like, I think it depends also on the scene.
And I think that we had to all be having fun
for the scene to work.
So on a certain level, you know that.
And the way to get the scene done is not to go to the stress place
because you've got to stay in the energy of the scene.
Yeah.
You shouldn't.
That's not your job.
I mean, you know, sometimes.
Technically, it wasn't true either, but yeah.
That's okay.
But I remember.

All right.
here we are with luck being old lady i am going to say that my Hyundai hot take and this is rare okay guys
i'm going to say that it is charlotte in that crazy pink dress that she supposedly gets from the
gift shop at the at the casino um partly because all i feel when i watch it is anxiety because i am
taken back to filming that scene in slomo where they pan up my body and just feeling like i wanted to die
but I can say since it lives on in Instagram and whatever, you know, that look great and I should
have relaxed.
And it's nice to have those kind of weird moments on film where you're dressing in a way that
you would never normally dress.
So I'm just going to, I'm just going to give it to Charlotte this week.
It's a Hyundai hot take celebrating iconic moments, bold moves, and unforgettable style, just like Hyundai.
The thing that I remember most was the fact that we couldn't turn anything off to film there.
So the noise level is normally on a set.
Yes. Normally it's quiet on a set.
But no, we just had to deal with this continual din of like,
yeah, yes, yes.
Like it was nightmarish.
Like when you would get off that floor, you'd just be like, oh, please God.
I wonder if I'm, can you guys verify this?
I remember that even when we were filming there,
there were already sex in the city slot machines.
Oh, no, I don't think so.
I don't think so.
That's anachronistic, okay.
I would have to look it up to see.
I don't feel like that happened until the show ended.
Yeah, it was a big deal.
It was shocking.
But it was wonderful.
For us.
I'm sure.
Yes.
Yes.
We were shocked that Sarah Jessica said yes,
because she had, you know, she had approval or whatever over any licensing.
Okay.
And we were like, good for her.
And good for y'all.
Yes, definitely.
I also remembered, and I don't know if you knew this, Kristen,
but the writers, not Michael, but the rest of us gals,
all got a house together that we lived in during shoot.
In Margate, the town where I grew up going.
But not my house.
Was it fun?
But it was so much fun.
But it was dangerous because we had these early, early calls, obviously.
And I just remember like no one wanted to go to sleep.
Also, it's very hard to go to sleep at whatever.
Oh, yeah.
But it was so much fun.
It was like being a camp.
Yeah.
It's really, it was really.
I'm not even going to say anything about our living arrangements.
in Atlantic City.
I also recall
because of the rules of shooting in the casino,
we couldn't bring our craft services in or our catering in.
And I just remember going to that depressing, like, corporate,
whatever room it was, and having turkey deli meat sandwiches for like every meal.
Oh, my God.
I just remember that.
I think I've blocked that out.
I mean, why did there a week?
Like, where, how was it?
Probably five days, yeah.
Interesting, because it felt like so long because we would be in the dark casino.
Like in the show when we go out onto the trolley, I'm like, oh, thank God light.
And I think that was how we felt.
Though, I also think that was shot in the wee hours, not at sunset.
I don't know for sure because I know you talk about it, like the pink sky.
The pink sky.
The pink sky was.
And that was also impossible to time.
We had obviously like, will we even get a pink sky?
Yes.
But you did?
Or unless we did a special effect.
No, no, no.
That's the funny of it because we realized, and my kids reminded me,
these days people would assume like, oh, they just, that was just.
Right.
But it looks so real.
No, it was.
Oh, that's nice.
I remember that day we got our pink sky.
But that was also a narrow.
by like a net.
Oh my God, yeah.
I vaguely remember, didn't we, I think it was one of those things where like we had it
scheduled, but then it had to be like when we had time or when the weather was right or
when, you know, to go outside, right?
Like I feel like it moved around.
And I feel like it was also like so rushed.
You don't know what I mean?
That seemed like Sarah and I on the troll.
I mean, we had much less time than we normally would for whatever reason.
Right.
But.
For casino reasons.
For casino.
reasons. Totally, totally, totally, totally.
We're living in casino time.
Oh my God. I mean, I just remember
it being just basically
hell, hell.
Right.
Halacious. Yeah. I had forgotten
the whole contrivance of
the private plane and that
you were, that Charlotte was
stuck on the plane with
cement. The third wheel
of that, sexy,
that awkward. And also like, why did
you guys have me knitting? Because I do think
I was knitting in life then.
Yeah, everyone was, everyone was knitting.
We were, right?
Yes.
The whole, they were all knitting.
It was like a knitting factory.
Yes.
I made baby James Wilkie hat.
I made Charlie's, Cynthia's baby a whole blanket.
Then she left in the cab.
I was like, kind of upset.
No.
It took me a long time to make that blanket.
I know.
That's really exciting.
I know it was.
It was.
was she felt really bad though so you know I feel I feel bad that I was
hurt yeah but it took me forever I mean it took me a long time the hats I was better at
because the hats are obviously baby hats are pretty small but um yeah I remember really I mean
digging into the knitting hardcore yeah when I saw I think I had to learn though I feel like
I had possibly to learn for this episode maybe you guys started me knitting I'm not sure I remember
getting lessons I would like to take credit for that I remember
I don't know if we can't.
Is it possible?
Jessica, I think she was knitting too.
Yeah, I think she started.
Because there's that picture of us on set knitting,
but I feel like that's later when Miranda and Steve get married.
There's a picture that they, you know,
post for, I don't know, weird reasons of us knitting together.
But I think that's at the marriage of Steve and Miranda.
Another episode of Julie and I.
Yeah.
No way.
Yeah.
Fantastic.
Oh, you guys had such good one.
I don't have clarity in my mind.
I mean, it's always interesting.
Well, it's hard to...
Right?
But also, like, when you guys were writing about the aging part,
because I just remember being so mad that we had to play Old Made,
I remember being like, oh, like mad.
And maybe it was mad because it was Charlotte's birthday
and we were playing Old Made, I don't know,
but like when I can't separate, you know what I'm saying?
And I just remember, like...
Well, how crazy also, isn't it, I mean, all these years later,
how crazy is it that...
to think that 36 was the age like, oh, I'm not doing that.
Like that was shocking to me.
Because going into this episode before I rewatched it, I actually thought, wait, is she turning?
Is this like Charlotte turns 40 and doesn't want to be 40?
I had forgotten the number.
I know.
So I was sort of stunned, especially because of the way you look and all of you are just so.
No, I know.
But it's bonkers.
It's wild.
You're reminding me now.
There was a scene.
And again, this is, if you look at the script, it was probably two lines long.
It was teeny.
Charlotte looks in her suitcase.
And you see the deck of old maid and the knitting and like the idea.
And she's in the funny bonnet, which was funny.
Hideous.
And we were the writers.
Perfect.
Perfect.
And you can never look hideous.
That's part of all.
You're sweet, thank you.
So the writers, we were always, like,
hold up somewhere working on something.
And I remember Michael was like,
what are we shooting right now?
Like, what's about to rehearse?
And we were like, oh, it's just that shot of Charlotte's suitcase.
It's that tiny scene.
Like, do we really have to go down for that?
And he was like, you better go down.
And I remember I went down and I stopped.
he had planned John Poles, an amazing wonderful director.
Hi John, if you're listening.
But he had planned this stylistic camera swirling around the suitcase
and we weren't even going to see you.
And it was like, wait, maybe you can't.
He can't.
It's a cool, oneer effect.
He loves that kind of stuff.
Yeah.
Well, and so that was like another example.
of like when you think it's a simple scene that you're right as written you do not assume so and i'm
sure i was like yay if i don't have to wear this bonnet on my head that would be great i'm sorry i was like
go to my room flag on the plague yeah and the funniest thing you sit you with that bonnet in the
your little robe it's adorable awful i do still have that robe and i do wear it we have it we have
You have to earn you coming out all slutty.
I know, right, right, right.

I think I also still have that shirt,
and I think I might even have that Pocodot skirt.
And I think I also have that pink belt.
I have like all the outfits from this episode except for the trashy dress.
The trashy dress.
Because who wants it is beautiful.
Yeah, it is right.
It's so,
it's like Ralph Lauren.
Yeah,
on the bus,
I'm wearing a sample Ralph Lauren that I really wish I had stolen.
It's like lace,
one of a kind.
It's fantastic.
It's fully wasted on the bus.
I don't know why I wasn't wearing it like all the rest of the episode.
I love it so much.
This is like Charlotte's big Ralph Lauren phase.
You know what I mean?
Not that she doesn't always like.
problem.
But yeah.
Okay, wait, let's talk about Samantha for a second.
I have talk about storylines because it's fun, the general.
But I had fully forgotten about the entire Richard storyline here.
All I remember was the whole aging, you know, old-made storyline.
Yes, yes.
Which you loved.
I mean, I didn't love it at the time, but I do feel now it has such residence now in terms of, you know,
because obviously we are so much older now.
Yeah.
But also just culturally, I feel like it's, it's like every, I mean, maybe this is just what Instagram
wants to show me.
But like, you know, women just claiming, claiming themselves in their friends in their 50s and 60s.
Like, it's awesome, you know.
Yeah.
I agree.
I appreciate.
I will say I also appreciated it at this age.
I appreciated it a lot more and in a completely different way than I did when in my early 30s.
Definitely.
It was.
What?
the episode and what it was about and what it was saying like even being frustrated with
Carrie um I just felt individually that the stories were um were were alive and they were
relevant to me and a different and even even the the more academic question that we were exploring
about women and their future and who's who's around at the end I thought was I appreciated it
Me too. Me too. It's so good. Like on the bus when Carrie's like, well, clearly it's just going to be us.
Like it's very interesting.
I've been looking at places for my parents who are in their 80s to live. And I literally just yesterday was visiting home with my sister. And it is a lot of older women.
My mom lives in a place and my dad is gone.
I mean, it's real, it's real.
Yeah.
But she has friends.
They, they do things together.
It's adorable.
Do you know what I mean?
Yeah.
It's great.
You know, people ask me why I haven't moved her here
because I don't want her not to have her friends.
It's important.
It's really, really important.
So I do think it has a whole, you know, weight to it now.
Whereas then I feel like it was an interesting question,
but it was also so uncomfortable.
Yeah.
I was so uncomfortable with it, you know.
But also I was dismayed that Charlotte wanted to lie about her age
because one of the things I've always loved about our show
was that we were our age and it was so refreshing and amazing.
I want to share a memory from that, like the birth of that story.
I remember Julie, I don't know if you remember this as clearly,
but it was the beginning of the season.
And we were, you know, this is like the brainstorm session.
I remember Liz Cichillo mentioning a friend of hers who lies about her age and like wants
everybody to kind of lie with her and and how galling it was to Liz at the time.
And it was a really lively conversation.
Like half of us were scandalized.
The other half to kind of see the point.
And, and now as we age, I'm seeing it actually more and more as a.
a thing that people do.
Some people do.
I don't do that.
I don't do that.
What's the point?
It seems silly.
But I mean, at the time back then, people definitely did it.
I mean, I think it was very, very prevalent.
And I think as an actor, you know, we all lied when you're trying to get parts.
You had to lie.
You had to be two years within the year that the part was supposed to be, right?
So you could be two years younger or two years older, but you couldn't be.
outside of that because they were so literal in their casting, right?
And no one would check back in the day.
Right, right.
And then I remember we used to be very annoyed.
They would always people or whoever magazine would always put,
if they were doing an article on you, Kristen 37th, Kristen 30, whatever it was.
You're like, why?
Like, do you do that to the men?
No.
Right, right.
And at a certain point, I think they stopped or there was this pressure to get people to
try to stop, but I don't feel like it's ever really stopped.
You know what I'm saying?
But there was also the wonderful thing of our show of saying, like, no, we're trying
in some ways to rewrite these things, you know, and that's part of the reason I think
our show has the life that it has is because we're saying, like, have you ever seen the
things on Instagram about like, don't worry, you're just in the second season of Sex and
the City?
You know, don't worry.
Oh, that's funny.
You know, and they'll show different clips of like what Carrie's doing or Charlotte's
I don't think I'm not gotten that on my algorithm.
You're going to get it now if your phone can hear us.
So basically it's saying like if you're concerned about the things that haven't happened in life for you yet, do not worry because you're only in season two.
Like you're only 32 or whatever it is, 33, whatever we were, it would have been at that point, right?
So it's saying take the pressure off yourself.
Look at everything that's to come, you know?
Oh, that's really funny.
Isn't that great?
Yeah.
I love it so much.
I love it so much.
But who knew then, right?
Like, I think we were just thinking like, you know,
because we all grew up thinking that our careers would be over at 30.
You know, that was just the normal.
Like even Michelle Pfeiffer talks about this.
Merrill Streep talks about how she thought it was over at 40.
Like, that was the regular kind of.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Right.
Right.
So for us to get a show at this point where we were the power.
players. We were like the active characters, you know, and it was about our lives and that our lives
aren't worked out and that we're in it, we're investigating, and we're doing this and we're doing that,
and we're stomping around New York in our shoes. It was amazing, right? It was amazing. And it took this whole
pressure of lying away, right? So I think for me, I was like, oh, no, Charlotte wants to lie at other age.
Do you mean? Which makes sense for Charlotte.
Yes. We did that. We visited it. We did. We did. It was a moment.
It was a moment.
And it does make sense for her.
Like she does come from that kind of world where people probably wouldn't be honestly saying like, I'm 36, you know, whatever it is, right?
Which again, it's like a little baby, right?
And then Samantha has that joke where, what did she say something like?
And I'm, I am 37 or seven.
Right, right, right.
Yes.
I can't keep running off the.
It was really funny.
It was really funny.
It also made me think this is off top.
of this particular episode, but it did make me think about the second movie and the menopause story
and how ahead of our time we were for that.
Yes.
Because now that's just like a very huge part of conversations.
Yes. One, if we're going to talk about like some positive things that have happened in the last two and a half decades,
the fact that now menopause is like people are talking about it.
It's great.
Didn't.
Yes.
It's major.
I feel like we.
And HRT, it went away and now it's back in the biggest way.
Yes, thank God.
Thank God.
But like her and her pills not wanting to be separated from her hormones.
That was awesome.
You know?
When little fun kid bit, when Kim is running up the stairs of the casino,
that's silver cup.
Right.
I remember
that's true.
Does that funny?
Like this look like
the casino
stairwell?
Yes.
Like where can we
get that?
Let's do it at Silver Cup.
And I remember
on her storyline
the Pearl Thong
being one of those
we would get like
this is before,
obviously way before
Instagram and social media
but the show
was like
the early
like
we were like one big
influencer. So people would send us weird products. And one, the pearl thong was one. And the other one I
remember actually putting in the show was the, um, nipple cover. We're the fake, fake nipples. I remember that,
yes. And it was like once in a while, we would get something that we would, you know, have to,
totally, totally. We would actually have to use. Now, we didn't write about this, but, but Spanx were new. And we were
Like, send us the Spanx.
I don't know.
We wrote about it.
But personally, I was like, please.
And I would run into that lady.
I can't remember her name.
And she'd be like, oh, you guys are great.
And I was like, you're great.
Send us.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
We used them in then just like that.
But that was so much later.
Right. That's so much later.
When they were totally, totally, you know.
Did all get TiVos.
That was very.
That's true.
And then we did.
And we used it in the show.
We did.
We did.
We did. We did.
That Tivo, man.
Isn't it funny how?
It held up.
But also it was so interesting.
Like, we thought that was what was going to be normal.
We had no idea of streaming.
Like, you just can't even think of the thing that's going to come.
You know?
Like RIP-T-vo.
Right.
Totally.
It was like a moment in time.
Right.
Because before that, didn't we have to record on VHS tapes?
Yes.
You had to, like, set it.
You had to set it.
You had to set it and hope that no one came.
and changed it, right?
My mom had, like, taped over.
Taped over your show.
My mom had so many tapes full of law and order.
Oh my God.
It's so funny.
It's so funny to think of.
I remember TiVo being thrilling and then it just went because streaming happened or
it just got like squashed.
It just got squashed.
You know they're on to ours for so long.
I think I was probably the last.
You were the last.
Did you love it so much?
That's so cute.
I know.
I like the noises of TiVo.
It's really good.
It's really good.
I was thinking the other day when we were watching, it was one of the ones where
Carrie talks about Amazon and how it can be delivered in two days.
And I want that.
When did we do that?
It's new.
You know?
Show?
Yes.
Because I go to the self-help aisle and there are all those women crying.
Do you remember?
Oh.
So then I'm embarrassed to get it.
This is after the divorce, you know, and I need to help after the divorce.
And so then I order it because no one can see me ordering it.
But then Amazon gives me advice of other books and it's all like table for one.
Do you remember this?
And so I take the book and I throw it out the window, but also carries at home going,
oh, two-day delivery like Amazon's new.
And we haven't gotten to when we say we're coming really soon to saying that
Did you Google him about a date?
Do you remember how we said that, like, early on?
We, that was that least we had like a whole thing with Michael about that.
Google, like using Google.
That was just like, that was, that was all the wild rest us.
Right?
I mean, all this changes are happening.
That's blowing my mind that then.
Okay, that's all right.
Isn't it crazy?
That's wild.
And aren't we so smart?
that we put it in the show.
Like, it's so good.
You know what I mean?
Because these things were new and exciting.
And I also remember the first movie, Samantha gets the iPhone.
And I remember standing on the street with Kim,
and it was set to like its home settings.
And it said, Cooper Tino.
And we were like, what's Cupertino?
We were like, why does it think that it's living in Cupertino?
What is this?
Like, we were so, I mean, I know.
And we're just like, isn't it amazing?
Talk about a time capsule.
Right?
It was brand new.
It was brand new.
And then the other thing,
and then I'll move on.
The other thing was AOL Messenger.
Do you remember when Carrie?
Yeah.
I heard you and Amy talking about this.
And Carrie sent her first email.
And she's like,
could they see me?
Right.
Because she thinks AOL Messenger can see her.
She also couldn't have a cell phone forever.
Like I remember being in the Raiders room saying like,
she has to have a cell phone now.
Nobody doesn't have a cell phone.
Like it's time.
I know, but in the beginning when we're picking up those hard, hard lines, I mean, especially in her apartment, but like, she goes to a bar and calls someone on a hardline phone.
Well, okay, the first scene of this episode, luck being an old lady, when she's waiting for the blind date.
Again, my daughter was like, how did people find each other on a blind date if you didn't have a phone?
Right.
Totally.
Yes, we did a lot of things.
We did.
We did.
Charming. It was super charming and adorable.
The fact of it, she didn't know what he looked like.
Looked to ask. No, she's no idea.
I know. I had
completely forgotten that she gets stood up as well.
That was exciting for me. I was like, oh.
It was exciting. It was different. It was definitely different.
You guys were like, hey, let's change.
And it's great that it wasn't like the guy of the week. I think that's really, really good.
And that's what was supposed to kick off this existential crisis.
And it does.
Like, wow, I gained to go on a blind date and he didn't even show up.
It's like, or did he and take one look at me?
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
I know it happens.
That's a horrible feeling.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay, you guys, it is so much fun to talk to Julie Rottenberg and Lisa Zerritsky.
So we're going to come back.
This is part one and join us later in the week for part two.
More about luck be an old lady.
See you later.
