Astrology of the Week Ahead with Chani Nicholas - The Week of May 30th, 2022: New Moon in Gemini and Mercury stations direct
Episode Date: May 30, 2022In this podcast, New York Times bestselling author and astrologer Chani Nicholas discusses the astrology of the week and what it might mean for us all. The astrology of the week of May 30th, helps us ...to begin again with the New Moon in Gemini. This is the first lunation since eclipse season and it’s a clear demarcation from turbulent eclipses to a way forward. By June 3rd, Mercury (the ruler of this Gemini New Moon) stations direct. The station occurs conjunct the fixed star Algol, which is associated with the myth of Medusa. Rage about systemic injustices, abuses of power, and structural harm get its microphone. Finally, Saturn stations retrograde and it’s time to scrutinize the systems on a micro and macro level. What needs to be torn apart in order to rebuild it from the ground up? We’ve got a gift for you. From now until June 10th, we’re offering a one-month free trial of the CHANI app’s premium features and content. Before we get in to this week's reading, I just want to pause and name the fact that we have just come through eclipse season.
Now, this week we have a new moon in Gemini, which in some ways helps us to reset our systems.
It is a demarcation of that was eclipse season and now we're moving into something else.
So I want you to stop and think about what this last month has been for you.
And if you take stock of what that was for you, it can help you to frame this year, 2022,
and also think about what the next chapter of eclipse season might mean for you personally and also us collectively.
The next eclipse season will happen six months from now, October, November of this year.
And it takes a moment for the meaning of eclipse season to roll out. So the last eclipse was two weeks ago. But this week, as Mercury stations direct, it stations direct at the same point that the sun was at during the last eclipse, the eclipse on May 15th slash 16th. And that eclipse was a very important one because it was the first eclipse to happen in Scorpio near.
the South Node in a couple of decades. So that was a very particularly poignant one. A total lunar eclipse
is a big deal. It's always going to bring up some pretty dense, difficult emotions. But a total lunar eclipse
near the South Node is extra scathing sometimes or scouring on an emotional level. And then a total lunar
eclipse on the South Node in Scorpio is like a whole other ballgame in regards to emotional
intensity. Scorpio is a tremendously powerful sign. It does encapsulate the area of life that
demands we grapple with the fact of death, transformation, loss, grief, and definitely can be
quite gruesome because life is gruesome in many ways and there's got to be a sign that holds
that fact and Scorpio is that sign. So a total lunar eclipse near the South Node in Scorpio is going to
be something to watch out for. That is what we had on May 15th slash 16th. But during that eclipse,
the sun in Taurus was also conjunct a fixed star named Algoal. Now Algal is a star that
It is called a demon star.
By many different cultures, it has been connected to the righteous rage that follows patriarchal violence.
This week, as Mercury stations direct, it stations direct on that same fixed star.
Mercury is a planet of communication.
Whatever it sits next to, it amplifies the message of.
So Mercury's Station Direct this week.
is amplifying the message of both this fixed star algal, which can speak to death and loss
and anguish and again rage. And it's also circling back to something that happened
on that last eclipse, May 15th, 16th. Now here in the United States, which is not the center of the
world and it's not the be all and all of everything, but on May 14th, about a day before that first eclipse
in Scorpio, near the South Node, there was a mass shooting in Buffalo by an 18-year-old young man,
a white supremist who targeted black folks in a grocery store and ended up murdering 10 people.
And then, of course, within two weeks, there was another mass shooting by another 18-year-old
young man in Texas who murdered 19 children and two adults.
Both of these young men bought their assault rifles from federally licensed gun dealers.
Very oddly, Salvador Ramos, who is responsible for the massacre in Texas, had his birthday on May 16th.
And shortly after that, bought his assault rifles on May 17th and May 20th.
May 16th, of course, being the day of the eclipse.
While the issue of extreme gun violence is very uniquely American,
the root cause of it is not.
The root cause of why so many of these mass shootings are carried out by men
is because of the patriarchal violence that is so locally but also globally.
but also globally accepted, promoted, and institutionalized.
And that's what this astrology is pointing to.
Of course, over the same span of time in this same country,
we are also talking about losing access to safe abortions
and an onslaught of anti-trans, anti-LGBQIA legislation.
Again, not something that is only.
happening in the United States. We can look the world over for similar instances. So what do we do with
this information? What do we do with the lived experience of this world and the knowledge, wisdom,
the context that astrology can give us? It's a complicated question and it is one that I grapple with
all of the time. I see the world events. I see the astrology. I see the correlation.
And I never want to diminish the grief that is occurring in the moment by explaining it away
astrologically because that can feel so very strange and devoid of compassion and humanity,
quite frankly. So I am not, nor am I ever saying that these things happened because of the
astrology. The astrology is a mirror to what is going on. And if we were to dismantle white supremacy,
if we were to dismantle patriarchy, if we were to dismantle systems of supremacy, if we were to
dismantle the systems that cause harm, then we would get to experience this astrology differently
because it would be mirroring something else in a different context, this fixed star algal.
can speak to the incredible power that is wrapped up in the anguish, right?
We don't have to live out the astrology this way.
But if this is what has happened and we look at this week coming up and think what is about to happen,
then I think we can take this moment to heart.
And we do that by saying, okay, well, Mercury is stationing.
direct on Friday and it's stationing direct in very close proximity to this fixed
our algal. So how do I use my voice? What do I say in this moment that could be of service
to justice, that could be of service to some kind of healing that could not let yet another
catastrophe be in vain? What needs to be said by me in this moment? Sometimes it's nothing. Sometimes
we be quiet. Sometimes we wait for that moment where we realize, ah, this is mine to say.
This is mine to listen to. This is mine to say. And that we don't smother the righteous rage
in response to senseless and systemic violence. This violence is on purpose. Violence that comes
from systems of harm was meant to be there. And no.
Knowing that, all I can do is look at my life and say, where do I have agency? Where do I have power? What can I change? What can I create that would interrupt this type of systemic injustice? What can I create with what I've got that can be an antidote to this senseless yet on purpose type of terrorism? What can I create? Who can I build with to me?
make a world within a world that could be a buffer, that could be an alternative, that could be
a generative resource for creating something that is systemically healing, that is systemically
justice-oriented, that is systemically humane. What do I have access to? And how do I put that to work
right now, right here. Because if there's one thing I know, it's that each of us is a leader.
Each one of us is the leader of our lives. And how we lead matters. How we communicate what
matters to us makes a difference. And when we fully realize this and bring it into each moment
of our life, we start to engage with our own personal power and agency in a whole new way.
And now I want to transition to this week's astrology and why this is all very relevant to the moment.
On Monday, May 30th, we have a new moon in Gemini.
This is the first new moon outside of eclipse season, and it does put a kind of cap on eclipse season to a large degree.
For many reasons, this new moon is a really lovely one.
New moons in Gemini are about getting curious.
They are about understanding the ways in which our communication impacts the world around us.
These new moons are really good ones to learn with.
In general, I would say, like, this is a new moon, that yeah, you could definitely work with.
But and also, because Mercury, its ruler, is stationing direct later in the week,
There is a stormy kind of quality associated with this week and anything that occurs in Gemini.
So this new moon is one you can work with, but because Mercury is stationing direct,
there is less of a directness associated with whatever it is you're trying to grow with this new moon.
There's a stickiness associated with this week's astrology.
And because Mercury is storming,
because it's about to station direct this week, later in the week, again on Friday, June 3rd,
we know that a lot of information and intel that has been kept secret or has been out of view
will start to come forth. So there is a lot of looking back and being like, wait, what just
happened? What did they say? Hold on. Let's put these pieces of information together. So in our
collective experience, this might be very obvious for us, again, especially if you're in the
United States. There's a lot that we're reviewing about our current situation and gun legislation
and especially the past 10 years of mass shootings in elementary schools, etc. So there's a lot of
review of like, wait, how do we get here? Why are we here? And what's the root cause of everything? But globally or
wherever you are in the world, you might start to kind of notice that, that there's a review of
something like, wait, what has just gone on? What is occurring at this moment? And because, again,
Mercury is stationing direct on Algole, we can look to stories collectively and also personally
about being betrayed, about that place of deep anguish and rage and the power that is locked in
inside of that and retrieving, reclaiming our own personal power by reclaiming our voice.
So this week is a lot about what we say and how we say it and what we're beginning with
this new moon might have something to do with how it is we are learning to communicate.
What are we learning to be direct about?
What are we learning to no longer hold our tongue around?
what are we learning is worth saying and worth being incredibly clear about.
And what kind of our own personal or collective rage or upset or torment or power or agency are we getting connected to?
And how are we working with it?
I will say this week is pretty much just that.
It's the new moon on Monday, the 30th.
It's Mercury stationing direct on June 3rd.
And the only other thing that's important to note is that Saturn stations retrograde on June 4th.
This Saturn stationing retrograde is really interesting because it's the last retrograde that is going to happen while Saturn's in Aquarius, which is all about societal structures and how they function and if they are congruous with something that could be considered good for humanity.
So all in all, I want you to think about what it is you're wanting to learn how to put into words, what it is you wish you maybe have the courage to say, what it is you wish you knew more about and then to make a commitment to learning more about it.
And again, how you can use your life, your resources, your relationships to create spaces.
where healing and justice can occur.
And not only can occur, but most likely will occur.
I can't control the world.
I can't make people do what I want them to do.
But I can help to, in whatever way it is possible,
create conditions that will bring out my best and everybody else's best.
I do believe that when we are in environments where we feel resource,
and safe and witnessed as inherently valuable because we are human, it's more likely that the best
of us will come forward. And when that happens, it's more likely that the most creative solutions
also start to come forward. And if a Newman and Gemini is going to help us do anything,
it's going to help us seed the potential for new ways of communicating
of thinking, of ideating on the solutions that we need now.
This new moon is all about the messages we want to put forth.
What message do you refuse to be silent about?
What do you need to be a megaphone for?
What truth is resting on your lips and counting on you to put forth?
When getting the truth out there, remember to be as inconvenient
as possible, be disruptive, be relentless in your pursuit of justice and the truth, wherever
and however you need to be in honor of Algole and this new moon and Gemini, Mercury
stationing direct. I thank you all for listening. I'm sending out so much love and healing
and energy to whomever needs it in whatever way you may.
might need it. All of the new moon blessings, may this new moon help us to reset and re-center
on what is most important and what we have to say and when and how and to get our messages
of healing and justice out into the world and to be relentless in our pursuit of them. Lots of love.
Bye for now.
