Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. I'm Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, host of the psychology podcast. Here's a clip from an upcoming conversation about how to be a better you. When you think about emotion regulation, you're not going to choose an adaptive strategy which is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome. Avoidance is easier. Ignoring is easier. Denials easier.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Complex problem solving takes effort. Listen to the psychology podcast on the. iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the latest episode of Next Question with me, Katie Couric, I sat down with Jasmine Crockett, Democratic Representative of Texas. She's holding out the fork for her party in one of the most conservative states in the Union. I think that ultimately, who will become the Democratic nominee for president will be someone
Starting point is 00:00:52 that has been out there and has shown that they won't allow themselves to be punched and just say thank you. Like, they will punch back. Listen to next question with me, Katie Couric on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I just normally do straight stand up, but this is a bit different.
Starting point is 00:01:12 What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack, where a comedian finds himself at the center of a chilling true crime story. Does anyone know what show they've come to see? It's a story. It's about
Starting point is 00:01:28 It's the scariest night of my life. This is Wisecrack, available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone. Welcome back to another episode of Bachelor Happy Hour. We're doing something a little different this time around. We're grabbing castmates for the upcoming season of Bachelor in Paradise. This is going to be a little get-to-know-you before the season starts.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And today, we are lucky enough to have Brooklyn. here so Brooklyn welcome hi thank you thanks for having me I'm so excited how you doing I'm good been busy but doing good good last time we saw you was at AFR yes the after the final rose live taping of charities finale we know you're a good friend of charities how was that getting to go out and watch her love story unfold live it was so fun watching the whole season but then watching everything live was just just seeing the love between her and Dotten was like yeah that's the one and it was just great seeing her so happy and just truly excited so i was so happy i got to be a part of it live and be there with her you know wasn't actually sitting next year but i was there with her so
Starting point is 00:02:42 it was a lot of fun so for our listeners just in case they they don't know um just you know give us a little background on um your season and your experience um on your season yeah so So my season, I was on Zach's season, didn't end the way I wanted it to, but, you know, that all works out in the end. You know, it was a great group of girls. A lot of us got really close. Me and Charity were super close, still are. But it was a great bunch of girls and Zach was a great guy. It just, you know, I went home right before hometown, so it didn't work out for me.
Starting point is 00:03:16 But who knows, maybe it will later. How funny would it be if Brooklyn got engaged to Zach and then came on here and was like, yeah, you know, it didn't end how I wanted it. too, but I'll work out in the end. Is that who? Zach the Bachelor. Oh, but he's already engaged. No, I know. I'm just like, I just feel like you always hear people be like, yeah, you know, like, that's like, that's exactly what I would say too.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Like, what I, you know, when people will come off the show, they're always like, oh, like, you know, it didn't end how I wanted it to. I'm like, I would love for someone to, like, end up with the lead and be like, yeah, you know, it didn't end how I wanted it to. Like, I had to get engaged to them. Yeah. Joe's like not following this at all. I am. No, I am. This is a curveball for you.
Starting point is 00:03:52 I, I wasn't expected. Sorry, guys. No, I like it, though. I like the, I like it. Okay. Brooklyn, Brooklyn, Brooklyn. Why'd you go back? Well, why'd you go back on Paradise?
Starting point is 00:04:04 Why'd you go on Paradise? So I think I had such a like self-realization moment on Bachelor. Like, I mean, it really put me out of my comfort zone. And I feel like that's kind of when the best things happen. So, you know, when I had the opportunity to go back in an environment where, you know, it's not normal. It's not comfortable. It's not your comfort zone. I just wanted to jump at that opportunity because, like I said, I feel like when I've had those
Starting point is 00:04:29 opportunities to be out of my comfort zone, that's when the best things have happened. So I wanted to put it all out there again. I agree that you like learn so much about yourself from going in those environments because like they're so odd and unique and just like, yeah, out of your comfort zone. So would you say there's anything specific that you learned about yourself on the bachelor that you then like brought on to paradise with you? Um, yes, yes and no. I mean, I feel like I was able to like truly be myself on The Bachelor and like literally full send it, no regrets. So I definitely carried that energy into Paradise. Um, because, you know, kind of before The Bachelor was like, I'll just like play it safe. But then like once I got on the show, I was just full sent it. Yeah. That's the only way to do it. So then would you say when you went to Paradise, you had every intention of another full send? Oh, absolutely. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Was day one what you expected it to be? Day one was wild. I didn't even really, I didn't even know what to expect. So I guess, yes, it was everything I expected because I didn't know. But it was a lot of fun. It was twists and turns, like right out of the gate. So that was exciting. But day one was wild.
Starting point is 00:05:44 What were you hoping for going down to paradise? Like, were you like, I want to leave here engaged? Were you just kind of like want to see how it goes? what were your expectations um I think like going into paradise initially I was like I want to end up engaged but I wanted to also see how it go they didn't want to force anything that wasn't real I want to just you know stay true to myself heading into paradise and then once I got there you know kind of literally test the waters and see how it is and you know I feel like I could I just wanted to follow my heart and be true to myself at paradise so let's take it back a little
Starting point is 00:06:19 before paradise and after Zach's season, what was dating life like in that in between? Were you dating? A little bit, you know, so after Zach's season, I moved back home and just completely like uprooted
Starting point is 00:06:37 back to home, though. So, you know, dating was a little different, a little... And wait, sorry to cut you off. Where's home? East Texas. So I was in Oklahoma and now I'm in the middle of nowhere, Texas. Got it. Um, yeah, dating was not, I wasn't sure kind of how to navigate that because it was, it was a lot, it's a lot different like dating after being on the show and like, you know, trying to navigate all of that. So I didn't really date much. Um, but, you know, I kind of tried. But then knowing I was going to paradise, I was like, now I'm going to just try to keep my distance so that I can be completely open to the idea and the experience. Did you have a lot of guys, um, in your DMs? Oh yeah. The DMs are popping and I was like, nice. That's enough.
Starting point is 00:07:20 What about guys from the franchise? I think there was one, but that was it. Do you want to expose them right now? No, because I didn't respond, so I'll be nice. Okay, that's fair. That's fair. Any fun surprise DMs, even if they weren't like guys hitting on you, like anyone that reached out that you're like, oh, this is cool. Yeah, you know, I had a lot of people reaching out.
Starting point is 00:07:49 and like being so supportive because I I shared a lot on my season of the bachelor so it was really like empowering to see all the support but I also had like a lot of people just like reaching out like being like oh we live seeing like a hometown girl we love seeing a girl from Oklahoma and just stuff like that so I had a lot of like really positive DMs I don't I mean you know there's always a few crazy negative ones but for the most part it was all good all good I love to hear that that's great that's good um did you do anything in particular to prepare for paradise uh i was at the gym every single day every yeah were you like if i'm about to be in a bikini on national television i need to go to the gym so i did that and then how many bags did you pack um i had i had three which is a lot
Starting point is 00:08:39 better than the bachelor i had five oh my gosh how many did you have how many did you have um I had two, I had exactly, I'm like a rule follower. So like I had exactly what they told me I could bring, which I think was two full-sized suitcases, one carry-on and one garment bag on both seasons. Brooklyn, Joe brought like half a full suitcase. Like, he brought nothing. But it was my second, okay, so now that you've been there once,
Starting point is 00:09:05 we don't know what happens. If you were to go again, how would you pack? No, no, no. That you can't ask. So this is a leading question because if she was there the whole time, she's going to be like, I would pack exactly the same way. If she left the first week, she'd be like, I'm going to pack a lot later. Okay, fair.
Starting point is 00:09:21 I just look at it like, for the most part, all we really wear on that beach is shorts. Oh, you're just being like, would you pack differently? Yeah, yeah. Not a mount, just clothing. But that's fine. That's fine. Cut off my question. That's a tricky question, though.
Starting point is 00:09:36 I see both sides to that one. Yeah. I will say what I will answer your question. Brooklyn tell me if you agree. I feel like I picked a pack a lot of like slip dresses. But like I was it was unbelievably hot on our season. So I was like I don't want to wear these because I'm going to literally sweat through them.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Yes. So like any material that I like wouldn't sweat through was like always what I went with unless it was a bikini obviously. Right. Yeah. Like when we had to put actual clothes on, I was like, oh, I don't like this. Like can I just please wear a bikini to the rose ceremony? Please.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Yeah, literally. It's so hot. Out of the OG cast, who were you the most pleased to see and who are you the most shocked to see? So, girl-wise, who I was excited to see was definitely Cat with a C. She's one of my really good friends. I was super excited to see her there. I was a little shocked to see Blake on the beach just because he's been, you know, I thought. Everywhere.
Starting point is 00:10:36 You could say it. He was everywhere. Yeah. You know, he's been on every season. The only show he hasn't been on yet is he hasn't been the Bachelor or the Golden Bachelor. And the Golden Bachelor now. Yeah. Yeah, his time's coming.
Starting point is 00:10:50 He'll be the Golden Bachelor eventually. How about Rachel? Was that, was that like a big thing? That was, it was surprising to see Rachel there. I didn't expect to see her, but, you know, got to know her. She's super nice. And I really enjoyed getting to meet her and getting to know her. But it was, you know, I don't know if Indeuxie.
Starting point is 00:11:08 intimidating to the word, seeing another bachelorette, but it's like, you know, I think she did a great job on her season. So then seeing a former bachelorette there, you're just like almost starstruck. Were you, when you guys all, were you part of the crew, the charity crew that went to Miami? No, I was not. I did not get to go on that trip. Did you talk to any of the girls from your season that were going to paradise or potentially going to paradise? Yes. and what did you guys discuss were anybody like was anybody on the fence um i don't really think there was many on the fence of the girls i talked to um maybe if maybe there might have been one just kind of not sure how to feel about it but um you know i think i don't know
Starting point is 00:12:02 how to say that anyways um but for the most part you know we just kind of discuss like who we'd want to see there, you know, how we feel about the heat for one, because it was hot. That was rough. Oh, yeah. I'm pretty sure it feels like 117 outside right now, but I think paradise was worse. Like, it's really hot. I will say though, so last season, the one between our season and your season, it wasn't as hot, but the bugs were apparently really bad. So we didn't have any bugs at all because it was like, it was too hot. Their season wasn't that warm, but like they were getting eaten alive which I'm like I don't know which is worse I think I'd take the heat I think I'd take the heat too because at least you can like jump in the pool like covered
Starting point is 00:12:49 in mosquito bites like you're an itching rag yeah true oh yeah no I'd take the heat yeah absolutely and then what was more intimidating Bachelor in Paradise day one or Bachelor day one oh I think Bachelor day one because I truly had no clue what I was getting into and then Paradise Paradise has a lot more like of a laid-back feel. It's not, I feel like you're not in as much of like a tooth and nail type competition. So I think Bachelor was more intimidating. But when you get down there, do you feel, as a woman, do you feel like you could kind of chill and wait for the guy to make a move? Or are you someone that's like, if I'm interested, I'm going right in?
Starting point is 00:13:34 I am more of a, I'll let the guy make the first move. And then, like, being in paradise, I was like, okay, like, we'll just feel it out. I can just, you know, scope it out. It's not like I'm just looking at one person like it is on Bachelor. But then, you know, as the day one's going, I'm like, oh, well, I wonder who's going to have the roses. So, like, maybe I do need to make a move. So, you know, it's like kind of going back and forth. But mostly, I was like, I'm just going to sit back and see what happens.
Starting point is 00:13:59 That is the nice thing about Paradise. If your personality as a girl is to not be the pursuer, you don't really have that luxury. on Bachelor, like you have to pursue the lead in a size. Like, that's the whole structure. Whereas Paradise, you can and if you're someone that likes to be pursued, like, that might be a good inkling of, like, who you want to go for, like, if someone's, like,
Starting point is 00:14:19 actively pursuing you. But that is the thing that always happens in Paradise. We always see, like, the guys always grow out, though. And then it becomes, and then the girl start complaining, and then it becomes a big thing. Yeah, it always happens. We won't ask you if that's what happens
Starting point is 00:14:37 on your season but that's one of our predictions um is there anything what would you say you were the most nervous for and the most excited for going into paradise um i think what i was most nervous for um okay excited i think was just like the opportunity of like who could be there who could i meet where could this lead um but i think were you not to cut not to cut you off were you shocked when they called you for paradise or were you expecting it um I mean, I kind of expected it. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah, I expected it.
Starting point is 00:15:13 But you know, you're still excited and still like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this is happening. But I was kind of expecting it. Yeah. I'm Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, host of the psychology podcast. Here's a clip from an upcoming conversation about exploring human potential. I was going to schools to try to teach kids these skills. And I get eye rolling from teachers or I get students who would. be like, it's easier to punch someone in the face.
Starting point is 00:15:39 When you think about emotion regulation, like, you're not going to choose an adapted strategy, which is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome as a result of it, if it's going to be beneficial to you. Because it's easy to say, like, go you, go blank yourself, right? It's easy. It's easy to just drink the extra beer. It's easy to ignore, to suppress,
Starting point is 00:15:59 seeing a colleague who's bothering you and just, like, walk the other way. Avoidance is easier. Ignoring is easier. Denials is easier. drinking is easier, yelling, screaming is easy. Complex problem solving, meditating, you know, takes effort. Listen to the psychology podcast on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I think Democrats have, for a very long time, allow Republicans to play them.
Starting point is 00:16:28 So essentially, Republicans came up with a narrative, and Democrats decided to play into that. and that only hurt the Democrats. I'm Kitty Couric. Jasmine Crockett, Democratic Representative of Texas, is not known for holding back. And our recent chat on Next Question is no exception. But when you hear how she got to where she is, her intensity makes perfect sense.
Starting point is 00:16:53 It's just hard to imagine a world where you don't have enough people that care to do right by people. And so that same pattern. that carried me through as a public defender that led me to want to change laws and thinking about the harm that will happen, not just to my constituents, but just generally, like, I carry that weight with me because you've seen it up close. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Listen to next question with me, Katie Couric on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I was expecting you to get called if you did. Yeah, you got like when I think personally like when you get you were someone that got a good amount of screen time and you went decently far on your season. So it's kind of like, yeah, like it's almost guaranteed. Yeah, not guaranteed. But I mean like you were someone that I think when you went home, we were like, oh, we would like to see her in paradise. So if we feel that way, we can imagine a lot of the viewers and the producers felt that way.
Starting point is 00:17:56 But okay, most nervous for it. Yeah. Most nervous. I think most nervous was just like, what if I get there and everyone hates me? I don't know. And I'm just nervous for that. Just like the unknown. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Yeah. Were you worried at all about not like not finding a romantic connection at the beginning? Yes and no. Like I was a little worried. But at the same time, like I'm a big like big picture, big plan person. And I was like, if it's not for me, it's not for me. I don't want to force it. So that was definitely in the back of my mind.
Starting point is 00:18:32 But at the same time, I was like, there's only one way to find out. So don't want to force it if it's not there. But I got to go to see. I want to ask you so many more questions, but you're just not going to be able to answer them. Okay. I have a question. I have a question. So you and Kat Izzo had a little bit of beef on Zach's season.
Starting point is 00:18:54 If you want to just update our listeners, like, in a sense or to what that was. And if you were nervous and you guys were both at the AFR together. Yes. So on Zach, Zaccis, me and Kat had a little bit of beef, you know. I am rather outspoken. I pretty much just say what I'm feeling. You might not agree with it. And that's okay.
Starting point is 00:19:15 I'm still going to say it because that's how I'm feeling. We did talk it over. And then definitely again at Women Tell All and we hashed it out again. But at the end of the day, you know, that's in the past. It's a completely different scenario being on Bachelor than it is on Paradise. So I was a little nervous going into Paradise that maybe something would happen and we'd get back into it. Not even about that, but something else. Just because sometimes I feel like our personalities can clash, not saying anything negative towards her.
Starting point is 00:19:45 It's just how we both are. But then, you know, everything's good. Me and her sat together at AFR. we're both super close with charity and we're we're totally cool but that idea the nerves of are we going but heads again in paradise was definitely there totally so you guys are close with charity did she give you any like tidbits of like hey you might be into this guy or like definitely avoid this guy yes yes she definitely gave us like all the down low on the guys from her season that she thought might be there um and
Starting point is 00:20:23 Some predictions were spot on. And like some of her tidbits, I was like, I see it. And then I wouldn't say some were way off, but went a completely different way than we expected. But she definitely gave us. Yes. She definitely gave us some insight. Did that, I guess, did any of that insight make you hesitant to talk to any of the guys? Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Yes. Yes. I tried to have an open mind because, I mean, Bachelor and. that situation is so much different than Paradise. It's a lot more laid back. So I tried to be open-minded about that. But at the same time, like, a red flag is a red flag. So there was some that I was like, no, that's not happened.
Starting point is 00:21:05 I get it. Like, if one of your close girlfriends is telling you like, I don't know, look out for this guy. Like, I saw some red flags. Like, you can't ignore that. 100%. So Charity gave you some tidbits of advice to go down there with. Did you watch any, like, past seasons of Bachelor in Paradise where you were like,
Starting point is 00:21:21 oh, I'm definitely not going to do that or like I saw this person do this and I'm going to learn from that. Yeah. So I have I had never watched like a full season all the way through. I just seen like episodes here and there. So before I left, I did sit down and rewatch season eight. And then I watched some of season seven. I just didn't get finished with it because I was like psyching myself out. I'm like, oh my God, I'm so scared like. It's boring season. No, it was a good season. It was a good one. but I I wouldn't say I really like took advice or like took notes on like what I saw I just like let me figure out how this works because it's it's set up different than Bachelor
Starting point is 00:22:00 so I was just trying to get like oh gosh my earphone trying to get like a general idea yeah no I get it like there's so many people that go on Bachelor we talk about this a lot people that go on Bachelor or Bachelor and have never watched the show before it's a lot of the times with the guys you see it where they're like yeah I've you know maybe watched one episode And it's not even to like, yeah, like take notes and follow like a certain method. It's like you should know what the structure of the show is that you're entering into. Like you should know the format and the kind of the general rules and how it works. Yeah, like you said, you just get a general.
Starting point is 00:22:31 That's that's really all you need to do before going on the show. Just get a general idea of how the fuck this shit works. Yeah. Yeah. So you're not going in completely blind. Yeah. Right. Agreed.
Starting point is 00:22:42 Because we have so many seasons where you're like, there's so many people you're like, do you have any like, do you have any like, dot and, which actually works out for him. He didn't even know that it was an exception, not the role. Yeah, he didn't even know there was an engagement at the end, which was... Oh, my God. I was like, no, he mid-season was like, oh, I just found out that, you know, this ends in an engagement. Like, I'm cool with that. And I worked for him, so...
Starting point is 00:23:02 Yeah, but I would say he's the exception. Most people that go on with no idea of how the show works ends up, like, putting their foot in their mouth. Yeah. Oh, absolutely. The one guy that brought notes. All right, Brooklyn, we're going to play a game. You want to play a game? Rapid Fire.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Let's do it. All right. Let's do it. Do you want me to do it? Do you want to do it? You go ahead. All right. Are you more of an introvert or extrovert?
Starting point is 00:23:26 Ooh, I'm actually an introvert. Yeah, that makes sense. What is your go-to paradise cocktail? Ooh, a strawberry mojito. What's your go-to cocktail? A strawberry mojito. It'll be the middle of like December and I'm like, can I have a strawberry mojito? Really?
Starting point is 00:23:46 Wow. Oh, that is a specific drink of choice. I like it. What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery? Oh, probably a new truck. What kind? A Dodge, Dooley. Nice.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Got off a big one. I like that. All right. What is your go-to pump-up song? Um, oh my God, that's hard. That's a hard question. I know what it is. It's Get Like Me by, uh, what's his name?
Starting point is 00:24:17 name. You know what song I'm talking about. Every time we hear that song, I'm like, I feel like I'm 12 again when the first time I heard it and I love it. What is your one item on your bucket list? I want to go to Greece. That's on my bucket list. Okay. Yeah, charity is that and they're going to yeah. Yeah, maybe you could tag a log or what I know. Put me in your suitcase. Yeah. What is your love language. Oh, acts of service. Do you have any deal breakers when it comes to dating?
Starting point is 00:24:58 Yes. And now that I'm thinking of them right off the top of my head, I don't know what they are. But I'll know when I see them. I will know them when I see them. Yes. Yes. Do you have one? A deal breaker. I do have. some i've also tried like i feel like i would have said kids probably like if you don't want to have
Starting point is 00:25:21 kids that yeah you did tell me that from the beginning um yeah do you want to have kids brooklyn yes not for a hot minute but yes okay so would that be a deal if you were really into a guy at the beginning of paradise he's like i absolutely don't want kids you're going to end that yes that that yes it's good to know all right um who was the first concert you ever attended Um, it was the Cheetah Girls. Oh my God. They just are celebrating their 20th anniversary. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:25:50 Joe probably is, yeah, it's all over my Instagram. It's like, Cheetah Girls came out 20 years ago today. Oh my gosh. I actually don't know who they are, yeah. You don't know, yeah. Oh, my God. You're probably a little past, it's a little after your time. But it was like a Disney channel original movie.
Starting point is 00:26:04 It was with Raven, Simone. Okay. And then three other girls, one of them dated like Brody, or not Brody Jenner. Yes. One of the, one of the, one of the, one of the, Kardashians for Rob Kardashian. Yeah. And it was like, they were like a girl pop star group. Got it. There was like three movies. It was so good.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Yes. What is your favorite dessert? Anything chocolate. Like a chocolate molten lava cake, probably. I love that. Most important item to bring to paradise. A fan. Yeah, I did not bring one of those and I regretted it. I brought three.
Starting point is 00:26:42 That's so smart. What is one word to describe this upcoming season of paradise? Unexpected. Okay. Nice. Did you see that they just dropped like the credits, the promo credits? Yes, yes. I just saw those just shortly before we got on here.
Starting point is 00:27:03 And I didn't get to fully watch them. What are you doing? I'm roping. Roping. Roping. Okay. Why? Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Yeah, I rope so like There you go I rode out and stuff So yeah Is that what you're doing in Texas Right now? No, I'm a realtor But I mean, yes
Starting point is 00:27:25 I do rope Pretty much every day So except for lately It's been so hot And I'm like I don't want to kill myself Or my horse or the calves Like it's just so hot But once it starts cooling down
Starting point is 00:27:35 We'll pick back up And when you go out there and do that How like what are the hours? Like what do you do that for? I don't know Because I just, I'm coming, I'm being, coming from straight ignorance. I don't even know anything about it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:49 So, I mean, it kind of depends. Like, you know, usually like you'll have a rodeo in the evening or something and basically, fastest time wins. So, you know, depending on travel, you know, sometimes it's an hour down the road. And other times it's 12 hours down the road to get to the next one. So it just kind of depends.
