Starting point is 00:01:00 the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What would you do if one bad decision forced you to choose between a maximum security prison or the most brutal boot camp designed to be hell on earth? Unfortunately for Mark Lombardo, this was the choice he faced. He said, you are a number, a New York State number, and we own you. Listen to shock incarceration on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, everyone, welcome back to Bachelor Happy Hour. I'm Joe.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And I'm Serena. And we are here with a bonus episode. You guys have asked for it. Everyone's talking about them. Please welcome Charles to the podcast. Charles, how are you? Thank you. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Good. I'm terrific. Thanks, you know, everybody. How's everything going? So far, so good, you know, as if you like during the, you know, a filming time, you know, as you probably noticed that I've been traveling also. So I do hear the news or feedback, particularly I want to thank my fans, you know. I want to thank for their love and support.
Starting point is 00:02:23 As you know, some of the information is coming from my side. daughter Sophia so so far so good I'm very happy and so I'm very grateful to everybody yeah very very well-deserved where you've been traveling where are you currently right now okay good you know the trip was planned way way early you know and as Sophia said oh daddy you really should be here this time in the States rather than traveling but I told Sophia you know unfortunately or fortunately that this travel plan was kind of, you know, scheduled way, way early. So first I went to London, you know, to attend friends, a daughter's wedding. So you have to have some kind of British
Starting point is 00:03:11 accent, you know, when I'm there. We were actually, we were actually just in London. We just got back. Yeah, we were there about a week or two. Nice. So when I was in London, you know, I also sneak out a few hours here and there and visit Buckingham. And I opted up something, so I did make some comments. I don't know. Maybe some fans already saw my comments, and they might join me, you know, to help a little bit to clean up. You know, I don't know if it's appropriate. But that's my personality, you know.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I try to do something that I can, yeah. Yeah, that's good. So just to clarify, you were cleaning up Buckingham Palace? Oh, not yet. No, but you think they should. You thought it was dirty. It's a kind of idea, you know. I'm pretty, you know, clean here and there.
Starting point is 00:04:04 So this is what I saw and this is the kind of idea. And I think there are quite a few echoes from my fans. You know, it's a good note and a good suggestion. So if I'll be there next time, of course, I have to ask for permission first, you know. As you know, otherwise, you know, the police may arrest me for whatever reason, you know. So that's the first trip there. Yeah. Do you have something?
Starting point is 00:04:30 Yeah. Do you have a favorite place in the world that you have traveled to? Well, actually, honestly, everywhere, you know, when I travel, I love seems like, you know, all the places that I go to. But my favorite place has to be something to do with the water. Anything river or water, it's kind of my, you know, favorite area. So in Lenton, Paris, you know, when I see the rivers there, I'm always excited. Got it. And then where are you podcasting from right now?
Starting point is 00:05:06 Oh, and now I'm in China near Shanghai. Okay. Yeah, I'm, you know, visiting my relatives, friends, you know, a classmate, teachers, and also do some side scene. But of course, you know, one major part is really, really enjoy my childhood. food. What's your favorite food from your childhood? Fish. Fish.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Yeah. How old were you when you came to the States? Somewhere around 26. Okay. Yes, around 26 years old. Yeah, I mean, I was very young, you know, at that time. And what, where did you, where'd you come? What state?
Starting point is 00:05:50 First, the city, well, besides, I went to the States. I also went to other countries, but anyway, I went to Boston first. Okay. And I love it. It's a gorgeous, as you know, Harvard, MIT, even though, you know, I'm not qualified to attend those kind of colleges, but not many people are, Charles.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Not many people are. So did you come to the States for work purposes? No, I came to the States as a graduate student. Okay. I study and, yeah, go ahead. And then what do you do for work now? Well, actually, now I'm retired. But I kind of switched, you know, career before I retired.
Starting point is 00:06:37 I was in pharmaceutical companies, you know, research, new medicine, you know, analyze data, so on and so forth. Oh, that's what you did? That was your job. Okay. That's what I made a living. Okay. Did you like it? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:53 yeah i really enjoyed it as you probably can tell now my personality you know i love people and luckily people love me so i really enjoyed yeah okay so let's talk about how you got on a show like the golden bachelorette it's a kind of accident in the sense you know um a few months ago when Sophia and my daughter, you know, paid a visit to my hometown here, you know, in Marvin. And I think probably two days before she was leaving. And we were cooking some seafood in the kitchen. And while we were eating and she said, Dad, you know, I show you some program, which is, you know, Golden Bachelor last year, from last year.
Starting point is 00:07:46 And she asked me, did you know about it or hear about it? I said, Sophia Bailey, honestly, you know, I have to admit, you know, I didn't watch Golden Bachelor before, you know, for the younger or senior age groups. So she showed me, then the next day, she continued to show me some, you know, episode, explained, discuss. Then suddenly she said, Dad, you should apply for this program. I said, what? She said, you'll be fine. But also I said, you know, I mean, even during the application. process, I doubt, you know, I'll be enrolled or accepted.
Starting point is 00:08:24 She said, you never know, you know, just have a try. So for whatever reason, this time I made a decision very quickly. I said, sure. So we went online and basically, you know, we look at the application and we typed, you know, and pretty fast in English, so we sent the application in, guess what? No, I can't remember exactly the next morning or in two days I received phone call and that game started rolling. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:59 That's when it goes quick. Before you applied for this show, were you dating at all? Was there a dating life? No. No? Yeah, probably heard. I don't know how many episodes so far have been shown on TV. As you know, I'm away.
Starting point is 00:09:18 you know i assume it's three episodes and probably got some of the stories from show yeah yeah it is unfortunately you know something happened to me and my family so quickly and so sadly yeah and the later on as you know the covid 19 situation so no yeah and then did you feel ready to start dating when you decided to go on the golden bachelorette Um, I was thinking of that, but still not totally ready. Yeah, that's okay. Yeah. Well, you have had such a positive response from people watching.
Starting point is 00:10:02 How was your experience when you, you were there? Were you excited? Were you attracted to Joan? What was it like for you? Well, yeah. First of all, I would say from the very beginning, I would use the word kind of a surprise, a surprise that I say that because I was accepted. I think probably compared with some of my cast members, maybe I was not the most nervous person later on
Starting point is 00:10:33 I learned. You know, I was a little bit nervous, but as we opened out of our conversation, I became, you know, easier and easier. So, so it was kind of a little bit nervous at the beginning, but when this conversation started and we continued, and I realized, John, John is such a, you know, nice, sweet lady, and it was very easy to communicate. And obviously, you know, she understood, quote, unquote, my English very well. So the conversation went on, pretty, pretty smooth. Yeah. My boyfriend's professor is way too. friendly and now I'm seriously suspicious.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Oh, wait a minute, Sam. Maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit. Well, Dakota, it's back to school week on the OK Storytime podcast, so we'll find out soon. This person writes, my boyfriend has been hanging out with his young professor a lot. He doesn't think it's a problem, but I don't trust her. Now, he's insisting we get to know each other, but I just want her gone. Now, hold up. Isn't that against school policy? That sounds totally inappropriate. Well, according to this person, this is her boyfriend's former professor and they're the same age. And it's even more likely that they're cheating.
Starting point is 00:11:48 He insists there's nothing between them. I mean, do you believe him? Well, he's certainly trying to get this person to believe him because he now wants them both to meet. So, do we find out if this person's boyfriend really cheated with his professor or not? To hear the explosive finale, listen to the OK Storytime podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Jemel Hill, host to the Sports and Politics Podcasts Politics.
Starting point is 00:12:09 And on the latest episode of Politics, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joins me for a candid conversation about the state of the Democratic Party. What do Republicans say to you privately that they won't say publicly? Many of them are in fear of their political lives and that's been part of the challenge. But we continue to say to them, you were elected to defend your constituents, to stand up for your constituents. And there's life after Congress. And you should be willing to actually want to be able to look back on your time in the House of Representatives knowing that you can keep your head held high because you did the right thing.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Donald Trump is gone in three and a half years. But their legacy or their failure to stand up to the extremism and the unprecedented assault on America as we know it will be with them forever. Make sure to listen to Spolitics on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hi, my name is Enya Jumanzor. And I'm Drew Phillips. And we run a podcast called Emergency Intercom. If you're a crime junkie and you're a crime junkie and you. You love crimes.
Starting point is 00:13:18 We're not the podcast for you. But if you have unmedicated ADHD... Oh my God, perfect. And want to hear people with mental illness, psychobabble. Yes, yes. Then Emergency Intercom is the podcast for you. Open your free IHeartRadio app. Search Emergency Intercom and listen now.
Starting point is 00:13:40 So what was it like getting into the house after you meet Joan? and realizing that you are about to live with 20 other guys? First of all, the first impression of the mansion was great. It was much bigger than I thought, because before the program I heard, there's a kind of mansion, but when I entered, it's a kind of feeling, wow. As you know, besides, we were in the first early groups to enter into the mansion.
Starting point is 00:14:15 So there were not many people there. And actually, one thing really caught my eyes first is the fireplace and the kitchen. And the kitchen really, you know, so then because there were not many guys, you know, we say hi and we spoke a little bit, then I gradually shipped into the kitchen and I said, wow, then that's, you know, a lot of stuff that I kind of barely experienced before. It's a huge, huge, you know, cooking area, yeah. Do you cook? Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:14:48 What's your signature dish? I would say, you know, Joe, next time when you come to my house, I will entertain you with a fish. Okay. What kind of fish? Fish, yeah. I mean, I can cook many, many types of food, you know, many dishes. And I'm not bragging with that kind of. kitchen in the mansion, I can prepare probably 18 dishes within three hours.
Starting point is 00:15:18 Wow. That's okay. Charles. That's fast. Yeah. With a little bit help from one aid, you know, like a mug or somebody else. Yeah. You have to bring Sophia to be your sous chef.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Right. Right. So out of all the guys, who are you closest with? This is, this is a very, very. difficult question to answer why mathematically i think that they are pretty very equal i would if i would say i would start with a the few gentlemen that i met you know the first day gregg for example dan and then of course my roommates you know a guy uh um gary and michael and chuck yeah i think yeah And as you know, they care about me and I'm friendly with everybody.
Starting point is 00:16:17 So I would say all of them, yeah, including John. Was there anyone that you didn't like? No. Okay. No enemies. What was happening? No enemies for Charles. No.
Starting point is 00:16:32 What was happening with you? What was happening with you and Gary? You guys went to a convenience store. What were you buying? Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's a, I think it's probably an idea, you know, coming out from us. And as you heard from the stories, people snowed, as people get tired, and people cannot sleep well, so on and so forth.
Starting point is 00:16:58 So it's a kind of idea, well, we ask if there's any, you know, a local drug store that we can purchase something so we can help. So then, you know, we went to a local store and we look around and find something very nice. So we got them and brought them back to the guys who are grateful to us and very happy to see these items on the table. And did it help with the snoring and the sleeping?
Starting point is 00:17:28 I didn't test, but I think that those items were grabbed us up quickly. So that sent you a message. Yes, they were grateful. Somebody wanted them. So you, one of the, scenes that we saw as you took, you took a top bunk because you were in better shape than most of these guys. What, uh, what's your secret?
Starting point is 00:17:50 Well, you know, in five hours gathered in the room and we had two bunk beds and one flat bed. So easily, you know, we have to, you know, assign who to what. So first question we ask our age. So and then realized, I. I'm the oldest one. But when I look around, you know, I hate to say shape-wise, height-wise, so on and so forth. So I volunteer, you know, to be on the bunk bed on the second level. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Do you exercise? I go to the gym, you know, about four times a week. That's good. That's good. And then how about what's your diet look like? I'm not a scientist in a sense, but I do really. I listen to you know lectures yeah and plus along with my common sense and I try to avoid you know a meat as much as I can and I try to you know eat as much vegetables or fruits
Starting point is 00:18:58 but with with only limited amount each time so I want to make sure you know I'm in good fit yeah got it let's pivot a little to let's pivot a little to the show We see you have a pretty heartfelt, serious conversation with Guy about the passing of your wife. Can you just kind of talk us through that a little bit? Yes. As I explained at the very beginning, the sand has just happened so quickly. I mean, that is my wife. Literally fell from my shoulder.
Starting point is 00:19:34 It was sad. And I didn't anticipate at all. it would be that severe, you know, at that time. But anyway, once that happened and when the doctor told me, you know, the saddest story on the earth, you know, I couldn't take it, and I still didn't believe at the beginning. But then later on, and as I was kind of feeling a little bit better, I tried to recall what happened, the questions I had,
Starting point is 00:20:08 and the answers I was looking for. And obviously, other parts, probably I got my answers except the blood from her mouth. That, you know, made me very sad. I couldn't figure out. So until, you know, one day I sat down with a guy who is a ER doctor, and he heard my story again, and I asked his question, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:35 ask a guy what really where's coming from so based on my information guy analyzed and he said probably it's a bite from her in a ton unfortunately that you know the bloody I was very sad but at the same time I was relieved because that was the answer I was searching for for the last few years do you think after having that conversation and maybe getting that clarity from guy, you were maybe a little more ready to start taking dating more serious? I tend to agree with you, Joe, you know, because once you get answer and you relieved, as I probably in the show I mentioned, you know, if my wife or alive or what she saw what I'm doing, she might say, you know, Charles, you need to move on, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:35 That kind of message, you know. So, yeah, yes, I would agree with you, Joe. Yes, kind of, you know, tend to be readier than before. If your wife could give you advice when it comes to dating, what do you think she would tell you if she was watching the show right now? She would tell me always, you know, Charles, the first character you should look for is the intelligence. And the second one is sweetness.
Starting point is 00:22:07 That's good. So these are the kind of two characters I would look for, you know. Yeah. What are your friends and your family that are watching? What are they saying about the show? What do they think about everything? Well, again, you know, since I'm traveling, you know, not like other cast members in this back in the States, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:30 I don't watch with them. But I would anticipate there are lots of surprises to them, you know, in the episodes. But at the same time, you know, particularly my daughters and my family members, they want to see a happy child, you know, like in the old days. They have bothered them in the last few years as well. You know, they are worried about me. And as you know, you know, I'm pretty cheerful person in the old days, if I can say, yeah, otherwise.
Starting point is 00:23:04 So they want to see me the real child again. So the program, I think now they would say, you know, it's a good decision. You know, really, really is worth it. And probably they are also grateful to what all the producers, everybody involved, you know, that helped me, yeah. Do you, yeah, I was going to ask, do you feel happier now? Oh, yeah, yeah. If I can say, I feel my body is a little bit lighter than before, in a sense.
Starting point is 00:23:38 Yeah, that makes sense. My boyfriend's professor is way too friendly, and now I'm seriously suspicious. Well, wait a minute, Sam, maybe her boyfriend's just looking for extra credit.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Isn't that against school policy? That sounds totally inappropriate. Well, according to this person, this is her boyfriend's former professor, and they're the same age. And it's even more likely that they're cheating. He insists there's nothing between them. I mean, do you believe him? Well, he's certainly trying to get this person to believe him because he now wants them both to meet. So, do we find out if this person's boyfriend really cheated with his professor or not?
Starting point is 00:24:25 To hear the explosive finale, listen to the OK. Storytime Podcasts on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Jamil Hill, host of the Sports and Politics Podcasts, Politics. And on the latest episode of Politics, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joins me for a candid conversation about the state of the Democratic Party. What do Republicans say to you privately,
Starting point is 00:24:46 that they won't say publicly? Many of them are in fear of their political lives, and that's been part of the challenge. But we continue to say to them, you were elected to defend your constituents, to stand up for your constituents, and there's life after Congress. And you should be willing to actually want to be able to look back on your time in the House of Representatives knowing that you can keep your head held high because you did the right thing.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Donald Trump is gone in three and a half years. But their legacy or their failure to stand up to the extremism and the unprecedented assault on America, as we know it, will be with them forever. Make sure to listen to Spolitics on my. iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hi, my name is Enya Umanzor. And I'm Drew Phillips. And we run a podcast called Emergency Intercom.
Starting point is 00:25:39 If you're a crime junkie and you love crimes, we're not the podcast for you. But if you have unmedicated ADHD... Oh my God, perfect. And want to hear people with mental illness, psychobabble. Yes, yes. Then Emergency Intercom is the podcast for you. Open your free IHeartRadio app. Search Emergency Intercom and listen now.
Starting point is 00:26:06 We watched you play a little kickball, and you had a lot of fun doing that. Was that the first time you played kickball? Yeah, yeah, you know, if I describe this show, it's full of surprises for me, you know. So the Kickaboy is another big surprise, you know. And also the kickboard, and then there's another terminology you mentioned is baseball, you know? The kickball, baseball at the beginning. So when our bus brought us over there, I said, what are we doing here? Then some guys, maybe this, maybe that.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Then we saw some coaches. So the kickball started. And then, as you know, as the time went by, you know, we have to divide into two teams. and I kind of guessed the other team was very delighted that I'm in the other team why because I didn't have any knowledge experience whatever
Starting point is 00:27:05 so they were sure that they are going to win and then who won? You guys won, right? Of course the team was Charles L. Of course Charles L's team won. No, again, It's a surprise, but also luck. The coach and team members, you know, coach me a little bit, you know, before the game. And they draw the diagram and explained to me, Charles, what are the rules here.
Starting point is 00:27:35 And also what I should do, basically, rather than they tell me, Charles, what you shouldn't do. They keep telling you do what we are told and then go on. And this is exactly. I don't know how the TV was showing in the real, but I don't. I think at the end, I might tell myself, probably Charles was the fittest person on the field that day. I think you were. I think you were, Charles. You did a great job. I believe that. Do you have a favorite sport?
Starting point is 00:28:08 Not necessary. In college, I'm not very strong with sports. But on the other hand, I love all kinds of sports. So I play around anything. And these days actually, you know, the pickleball is my kind of favorite sports now. Nice. Yeah, pickleball's fun. I enjoy playing it. We saw you on another fun group date, which was a little earlier in the season, which was the prom date. How did that go for you?
Starting point is 00:28:37 Oh, I'm glad you mentioned this, you know, Serena. It's a surprise. As you know, historically, I never had a chance to go to prom. And I didn't know much about the prime per se, you know, until, you know, I was involved. Sure, you know, my daughters will involve prom, but as a kind of a general concept, sometimes they are involved, you know, me to do this, do that, but I never went into the real prom. So until that day, and they brought me and asked, what is, as you know, actually, you know, that morning when we assigned into a group date and the details about the prom.
Starting point is 00:29:23 And I was, you know, asked to pick the suit first, you know, at the very beginning, you know, after the announcement. And for whatever reason, the color, you know, that I saw, it seems like, you know, matched my style. So I picked that suit and then other ties and bowtack, something. like that, you know, it turned out to be very, very nice. Yeah. And then overall, how, how is your relationship with Joan? Is there a spark there? Yeah, that was actually the first date. And of course, you know, we started in the limo. You know, we had a champagne, you know, I think it also sent send songs, you know, on the way to the stadium. And we, you see, I played games with Joan.
Starting point is 00:30:19 And I danced with John and other people. We had conversations. And I think later on, we had very lengthy conversations. And our distance narrowed. And it began to, you know, I feel about her. and also she, you know, noticed the Charles probably the way, you know, I kind of behaved or acted. She approved it. I can tell, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:49 That's good. That's good. Were there any, from your observation, were there any other guys that you thought maybe had a really strong connection with Joan? That they know. Not that date. Not that date. But how about overall? You mean late on?
Starting point is 00:31:07 Yeah, I would say just, yeah, like where we're at in the season, your opinion, like, who has a really strong connection with Joan? Good. You know, talking about opinion, there's a kind of circulation around, you know, as we know, as you know, we discussed a lot. So I kind of joked with the guys which they believe, they said, I said, I have the data. So that became kind of, you know, a popular phrase. So each time when they are puzzled, say, Charles has the data. Let's go and ask him. So I did analyze the first thing, you know, I thought, who has more roses and who is more aggressive?
Starting point is 00:31:53 You know, so I sensed it, yeah. So who fit that equation? I can't tell you at this moment. I think of it as the program. No, you can't spoil it. Was Kim in your room? Nope. Do you remember Kim's Mansion Men song by any chance?
Starting point is 00:32:13 We just saw it in the last episode. Oh, yeah. And he sounded very well. Actually, he impressed me the first night, you know. I said, wow, we have a Navy officer here. And we talked, and he's very elegant, you know. He talks well, and he knows a lot, you know. I mean, besides his career as a Navy, I think a captain, you know, in the sense.
Starting point is 00:32:41 And I get along very well with him as well. And the songs also touched me. I think he sent not only the one on the TV, he said the first night, you know, we met in the mansion. So it's a great guy. And the late time also heard about his own story as well, you know. He has a sad story along with him, unfortunately, yeah. What would be your advice to people that have lost their spouses and are looking for love again? I would say, you know, it's unfortunate, it's very sad, and we have to tell ourselves, you know, we have to admit that that's the very, very tough first action I would use.
Starting point is 00:33:32 you have to admit. Then second, you know, be involved, try to be active. You know, don't sit in your room or your library. Life will make more miserable. You have to reach out. And if somebody you feel like, you know, it's comfortable, just say something. You know, people say, well, say, Charles, why you look so sad today? Then you can open it up.
Starting point is 00:33:55 Like one day I was in the other gym that I met with my ex, you know, colleague and she was kind of shocked and then I began to open it up and I told her story and she was very, very sad. So that's the second, you know, you have to, third, you know, if you are lucky as myself, you know, when your kids kind of, you know, support you and try to guide you in a sense to into the new direction of your new life, that would be, you know, it's the time you shouldn't move on.
