Hey, everyone.
Welcome back to Betcher.
Happy Hour.
I'm Jo.
And I'm Serena.
And we are here with Jen from Joey's season.
Hi, Jen.
Hi.
Thanks for having me today.
I'm so excited.
Of course.
So you, we thought that you were running to this podcast from surgery.
And when we were told that, I was like, oh, my God, what is she having surgery for?
And then we were informed.
No, you were performing the surgery.
So please give us a better understanding of what you do.
I don't know any of this.
You were in the bathroom.
Okay, I was not, I was never performing surgery, not performing surgery yet.
I'm assisting.
So I'm a physician assistant student right now.
And I actually took like a little break to go on the show.
But basically I'm in my clinical rotations right now.
And so every six weeks, I go to a different specialty and I'm currently in surgery.
It's only my second week.
So I'm very, very new to the whole thing.
I know nothing except for the fact that I held a gallbladder yesterday for the first time,
which was like the weirdest thing ever.
Oh, yeah.
What was that like?
Well, I thought it was going to be in there, like just watching.
I was like, I'm a student.
I don't know anything.
I didn't even like study up on the surgery because it was like an emergent surgery.
And the surgeon comes over to me and he goes, come here and hold this thing.
And I was like, what is this?
He's like, it's the gold bladder.
And he was based.
And in surgery, like you can't like move.
Like when someone tells you to hold something, you're like a statue all entire time.
So I was just like trying.
not to pass out, even though it's only like a 15, 30 minute surgery, but I was like literally
you cannot move.
But yeah, I mean, it was crazy.
Whoa, wait, wait, how is this, how, okay, how is it handed to you?
Is it, is it like in plastic?
Is it in a, in like a little bin or is it just like?
No, no, no, no, no.
No, no.
So we did a laparoscopic surgery, which basically you don't open up the entire abdomen.
you poke little holes like three different holes and then there's like these like big structures and then
you can put like basically like a clamp thing through to act as your hand so I was holding the clamp
thing that was holding the gallbladder.
Got it.
All the surgeon was kind of excising the whole gall bladder out.
I also just pictured Jen there like hands out cutting together with a gall bladder in them.
Let me put that by Starbucks.
Hold on.
Literally that's what I was picturing it too.
No, no, no, no. It was crazy.
So you were holding the clamp, essentially, that was holding the gallbladder.
Yes, exactly. Sorry, I should have started with that.
That's okay. We just have no knowledge of this.
Where do you live?
I live in Miami right now.
Miami? Oh, nice. We're going to Miami in a few weeks.
Yeah, Joe's surprised with the Valentine's Day trip to Miami.
Can't wait.
Oh, that's so cute.
How's the weather like the second week of February?
Oh, well, I think that's a much.
getting more. No, no, no, no. So, like, I'm from the Northeast, but, like, I've been living
here for, like, a year and a half now. And I've become a true Miami because my friends were
visiting me a couple weeks ago. And I was like, guys, it's so cold outside. And it's straight
up, like, seven degrees. Like, it's sunny. It's great. But I'm just so used to, like,
it being 90 degrees all the time. So when I'm not sweating outside, I'm like, it's kind of chilly,
isn't it? So it'll be fine. It's going to be perfect weather. Don't worry.
Okay. Other than here. Yeah. It's, it's going to be.
warmer than the New York and that's really how we care about. Do you have like a favorite restaurant or
anything we should go to? Once it opened up near five, it's called Casadonna and it's supposedly
really, really good. It's Italian food and I love Italian food. Have you heard a Jaguar Sun? Yes,
I love that place. Okay. That's actually one of my top, you're going to be obsessed. It's not like,
it's not like one of those big Miami restaurants. It's like kind of, it's in a hotel and it's very,
very vibey and the food is immaculate. I'm so jealous there you're going. Nice. I'm so excited.
I walked past it when I was there with my sister.
Really?
Yeah, it's in like a cute little area.
It's super cute, yeah.
What brought you to Miami?
PA school, so, yeah.
And I'll probably be here until I graduate, so another year.
But it's nice.
I just, I find myself missing the cold weather, which is so weird.
Oh, really?
I know.
I thought I would never say that, but I truly think not having seasons makes you go a little crazy,
which is why I think everyone's a little crazy down here.
That makes sense.
I actually really agree with that.
Where are you said the Northeast?
Where are you from?
So I grew up in New Jersey, but then I lived in Boston for a couple years after college,
and now that's kind of where my family's at.
Cool.
Okay.
How did you get on Joey's season?
What a question.
Well, I got a little DM in my Instagram one day, and at first I thought it was a joke.
I was laughing.
I was telling all my friends around.
about it. I was like, these people want me to go on The Bachelor. That's really funny.
And then at one point, I think when I learned it was Joey and it was actually going to be
a thing. I was really, I was like, oh, shit, like, this is kind of happening. I kind of have
to, like, talk to my school about this. And I was really nervous because I was like,
are they going to laugh at me or are they even going to let me go? So I was nervous to, like,
ask them in the first place. But thank God, I have a very, very supportive program. And they
were like so excited for me and we were what they say what did they say when you when you said like
well i like i wrote a very skeptic email to my um program counselor and so i asked to like meet with her
on a phone call and when i called her she was like is everything okay and i was like yeah i just
want to know if i can go do this tv show and she was like that was the last thing i thought
you were going to ask me thought you're going to tell me like something happened or like dropping
out or something and i was like well i'm not dropping out but
I'd like to take a little break.
That's so funny because, like, I remember so clearly having to tell, A, like, my boss at the time
and B, I was also finishing a postgrad.
So my program had.
So I had to, like, get, like, permission from both of them to, like, get time off.
Because if I couldn't get time off, like, I wasn't able to do it.
And it's just, like, such the way the conversations go is so interesting.
And, like, I was telling one of my girlfriends the other day, I was like,
You know, you go into it thinking people are going to be like judgmental or like what the heck.
Like you're going to leave like your career for two months or to go do this show.
People are always like so supportive and excited for you.
Anyone that's any any boss that would say no is just a dick.
Like truly.
Like I would be like I cannot physically give you this time.
Yeah.
I mean, I guess if that was the case.
But like I would be like if I was the boss, I'd be like, yeah, go do it.
Like you better win.
Well, what I think it is is some people just, like, don't understand it and, like, doubt if you're going on for the right reasons, like, whatever.
So I've had a couple of doctors, like, make weird comments at me now that I'm, like, backworking, but it's fine.
They don't understand it, so it's okay.
That makes sense.
I would say most people that are holding gallbladders on a Wednesday don't really understand the bachelor.
No.
Okay.
So what would, did you, what was your prep going into night one?
Would you expect?
What did you, what was going on?
Um, I honestly can't remember anything going into night one except me like shitting my pants like
50 minutes beforehand.
Like I was just like, so like I couldn't.
Literally or emotionally.
Emotionally, maybe literally too.
Who knows, I always have some kind of bowel problem going on.
Just hot girls with tummy issues.
It's fine.
Exactly.
Exactly.
No, I emotionally was just, like, all over the place.
Like, I remember jamming out to Taylor Swift to, like, calm myself down.
And, yeah, it was crazy.
I didn't have any expectations.
The only thing I'd hoped for was, like, a spark and, like, a connection, you know,
like you go into it knowing so much, like, oh, like what Joy puts out on TV, you know?
So you're like, am I really going to vibe with this guy?
Am I really going to like him?
And it obviously worked out really well.
Did you watch the show prior to go on?
No, I didn't.
I really debated it.
I was like, do I want to like know everything about him or do I kind of want to go into this like dating him like normally somewhat, you know,
and being able to like get to know things for myself and I chose the latter.
Had you ever watched a season of the show?
Did you know the way the show worked?
Funny enough, the only season I watched was Matt James' season.
Oh, nice.
I was on that one.
No, but I actually remember watching you, Saran, I was like, we're literally the same age.
Like, how is she so emotionally intelligent, so mature?
And I, like, specifically very much remember you and being like, that's the kind of person I want to be.
Like, I want to embody like that kind of spirit.
So it's cool.
That is so nice.
That's maybe one of the nicest call of us ever received.
Thank you so much.
That is very sweet for a girl that's trying to throw me a KFC birthday partner.
I'm not trying to throw you a KFC birthday party.
I just thought the idea would be cool.
That is the best idea.
I don't know.
Thank you.
Okay.
Let me lay this out to Jen.
Okay.
I feel like she's going to understand me.
Are you going into the KFC birthday party?
Just quickly.
Just quickly.
Okay.
So you know how in TikTok there'll be like themed parties like Shrek theme parties where
it's like everyone dresses up as a character and like everything's green.
It's like swamp vibes.
I was like, you guys basically had a KFC theme pool party.
But I'm like, imagine.
everyone dressed up as like the KFC guy or like something in relation to KFC and then you had like buckets of chicken everywhere and then there was signs that were like finger looking good and then you had like games that were KFC related like you can play like beer pong with popcorn chicken instead of the pong balls I just feel like this would be so funny like I just think someone at KFC and I need to chat I do I do love popcorn they should like sponsor KFC should
sponsor like a sorority or like a fraternity or like just even like a group of people at
university and like throw these KFC parties because I feel like it's like for the family
but it's also really good drunk food which like I never thought of ordering KFC as drunk
food but like I feel like they should tap into that market. I just never knew you felt this passionately
about KFC. I love KFC but Jen you said you love KFC too so you get me. I love KFC that is like
the best idea ever.
That's going to go in the books for my 27th birthday party now.
Thank you.
Beer pong with the popcorn chicken.
Oh, my God.
That's iconic.
I've never heard of that.
I mean, Cassie better send us some free food after this.
Really, we're really going in.
Which I'm down for.
And I do like KFC.
So if you are listening, I will.
Wait, favorite piece of chicken I need to know.
Like, what's your favorite part of the chicken?
I like either like a piece of dark meat, like Bowden skin on.
Yes.
Oh, definitely.
Fried.
Oh, absolutely.
But I'm talking like drumstick, wing, thigh.
Oh, I'm going to go
drumstick and thigh.
Interesting.
Really?
Yeah, what about you?
You like a wing?
I'm a wing girl.
I've never had wings from KFC though.
I like the breast.
What?
Of course you do.
Do you?
Joe likes white meat.
Yeah, I do.
Well, there's a few jokes.
I'm not going to make it, but I'll pass it.
Can we have enough with this?
I think the KFC talk right now because this has gone out for too long.
I'm Jemel Hill, host of the Sports and Politics Podcasts, Politics.
And on the latest episode of Politics, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joins me
for a candid conversation about the state of the Democratic Party.
What do Republicans say to you privately that they won't say publicly?
Many of them are in fear of their political lives.
And that's been part of the challenge.
but we continue to say to them,
you were elected to defend your constituents,
to stand up for your constituents,
and there's life after Congress.
And you should be willing to actually want to be able to look back
on your time in the House of Representatives
knowing that you can keep your head held high
because you did the right thing.
Donald Trump is gone in three and a half years.
But their legacy or their failure to stand up to the extremism
and the unprecedented assault on America,
as we know it, we'll be with them forever.

Okay, Jed, do you feel, okay, so you meet Joey, is there that initial spark?
Do you feel something?
Absolutely, yeah.
It's honestly crazy to say, like crazy to think about.
But 100%, like he just like has this, like, presence.
and something about that and the way we vibed
and like our connection from the first like initial coming out of the go cart
was yeah we just we connected really well
and did you did you have any conversations with any other women
in the house that felt similar to how you felt
as far as like having us like being like oh I actually think
he may be into me
I don't think so I think my
motto the whole time that I was there was like
don't ask, don't tell, don't share. Like, I was
very much like my connection when Joey's
my connection. I don't want to hear anybody else's
like, like I remember a couple instances
people would come up to me and I'd be like, I got to
go. If you're going to talk about this, I got to go.
That was me also.
I was like, I'm just going to mind my
business and I'm going to not,
I don't want to know about it.
I'm just, ignorance is bliss sometimes in that house.
Exactly. Exactly.
And who are you, who are you friends with?
Do you have a group?
with.
Yeah.
Like, do you have like anyone
that you're super close
with out of the girls?
Yeah, I definitely had a few.
Star, for one,
is definitely one of my best friends now.
She lives in Florida,
which is nice.
It's really close.
She lives like super close.
Star and Joey look like they could be siblings.
Oh, yeah.
Joe did say this when we were watching.
Yes.
There was a clip of them on the group date
and she was like sitting next to him
and Joe goes, oh my God,
look at Star.
Well, I have the same,
let's say like dark, dark features
and the olive tone skin.
Yes. And their complexion, yeah, no, they totally. When they're sitting down, like, just like next to each other face-wise, totally look like they can be siblings.
Okay. I'll have to watch out for some reason. Like, I never saw that. But look in episode three on the group date. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Interesting. I think Maria and him look really similar, actually. Really? Yeah. I think it's the dark features is what it is. What are your thoughts on Maria? Maria. I love Maria. She's one of my best friends now, too. Yeah.
Love her. We weren't super close in the beginning. Like I didn't know a lot about her. She's got that one of those personalities that kind of intimidates you at first. So I was a little like, do I want to know her? Well, I wanted to know her, but I was like, a little scared. You know, I'm a little shy sometimes. But she's like a girl's girls, girls through and through. Like, I absolutely love her. She's the best.
And what are your thoughts on Maria versus Sydney?
um interesting like do you know what's going like being in the house like is everyone aware like
how much are you guys involved in this well i think when i was in the house i was really confused
what was going on like people were just telling me this is what she said this is what she said and
like i'm one of those people who like i don't want to form an opinion until i actually know what's going
on so i and i never felt like i was getting the full story from anybody so i kind of was just
sitting there and watching it all happen. So I don't know. I think maybe things were blown up
out of proportion, whatever it was. Was like the tone of the house kind of falling more towards
one side or the other was everyone kind of just like, this has gotten kind of out of control.
I'm just going to stay out of it. Yeah. Like either of have anyone like really like really like a team
behind them. Not that I can think of or really know of. Well, I think maybe Sydney had more of like
like a team I feel like and and then there was a lot of other people who were also just like
in the middle and not getting involved I just think the whole thing really did get blown out of
proportion and cause so much tension and it's silly because I don't I don't really think it was
anything crazy juicy to be like talking about it doesn't it doesn't it seems like the
fighting is the juicy part but like what they're fighting about is like kind of nothing
Yeah. Like, I love drama. I love to see the drama happen. I loved gossip. But, like, I was like, this is not fun drama.
Give me something juicy. Like, we're fighting to make something exist here. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Okay. So, Jesse walks in and you get the one-on-one. Are you excited, shocked?
All of the above. I think I was really hoping for it. But I'm sure every girl was hoping for it at that point. But I think based on our.
the last conversation that we had, I really just felt like it was like the right time for a one-on-one
just because, I don't know, I just really wanted it. And so, yes, I was so shocked
getting it and obviously just like so excited to like get that one-on-one time with him.
So when they say, okay, you are going to surf?
How confident are you? Like, I mean, you're from, you're from New Jersey. I'm from Chicago.
like surfing it was you're from Toronto but yeah you had lakes I don't know surfing
you have lakes up there yeah thanks I'm just surfing is just not an option no yeah I'm not
surfing in Lake Ontario yeah no I don't know can you surf in lakes no you can't oh yeah I wasn't
I wasn't going to point that out but yeah no we do have legs but they're not surfable you have to be
in an ocean oh wow I'm so dumb okay so yeah have you
surfed before um no i've never searched in my life i think so like when i found out i was going
surfing i was like hmm is this really going to go well um i've always wanted to try surfing like
you know like i'm the kind of person who are like is down to try anything and surfing has always
been on my list um i think the only thing that was stopping me is i'm a terrifying fear of sharks um
Like, I've just seen so many, like, news articles about, like, people getting shark attacked and whatnot.
So, like, I was terrified.
Um, but I think, like, my whole thought process was, okay, like, they're not going to let me die on TV.
So, like, this is probably fine.
Like, somebody must have done research about the sharks in the area.
Um, and then when we were actually out there, you're like so close to shore too.
Never know.
You really just never know.
They could come out of nowhere.
Like, they could just come out of the sand.
But I also think, though, like, when I was in the water, I honestly felt super, super comfortable with Joey.
Like, even though it was our first date, like, for some reason, he has this calming presence about him.
And, like, he just really, he seemed like he knew what he was doing.
So I was kind of like, okay, like, you understand this.
Like, you're not going to let me die.
It's fine.
And if there's a shark, like, you're going to save me.
So it's fine.
And, I mean, I was really thinking about it.
And I feel like if there was a shark in the water and it was choosing between me and Joey,
like it's obviously going for joey so i'm having time to get out of the water
is joey is joey your type
does he like the type you usually date this is really bad but yes
he he might look like my ex a little bit i i have i have a thing for italian guys so
okay no i like that you admit that i feel like no one ever admits it they're always like
no i don't have a type like like um b do you do you like so i always find that funny when
people like kind of date someone that's similar to their acts like when you first met him
are you seeing like those is it he reminds you no no no no no when i say similar like in like
feet it's like in futures like yeah he's got like the italian look he has like the facial hair
um but personality wise no i i think all my exes are very different and joey's very different
from all of my exes i think the ones i've dated in the past not the best so so we're
thumbs up for Joey yes tons of green flags oh my god I almost said red flags green flags all green
flags all green flags so then we go we go to the night portion where you open up and you're
more vulnerable what made you make that decision to open up to Joey pretty early on yeah um well
I think I've always been like a not super emotional girl and I think
that's kind of what hindered a lot of my previous relationships from progressing
is like the fact that I didn't want to open up I'm very much I'm like people oriented so
like I love learning about other people I love catering other people's needs I'm a people
pleaser um and so your personal shit is nobody else's business right right yeah yeah yeah
I mean that's how I feel too that's how you feel when you go that's I feel like that's how
everyone feels when they go on the show but then the show does a good job of like
helping you open up.
Yeah, like, it's okay to be vulnerable.
And you're like, no, it's not.
No, it's not.
Oh, I tried to fight it.
I really did.
But I was also, I wanted to learn from my previous relationship.
So the reason why other relationships didn't work out was a lot of it was the guy, obviously,
but also me not opening up and being vulnerable.
And I really wanted to, like, go into this and give it my best shot.
And, you know, he just made me feel really comfortable.
And I did want him to, like, get to know everything about me.
And for him to know, like, why I am the way I am and things like that.
So I just, I wanted to start off on a good foot.
Smart.
No, I think it was great.
And I also think that when you get a one-on-one date on the show, it's like guaranteed private time.
So you're like, if I want to open up.
And I think especially like you're sharing your experience about past relationships and your
relationship with your parents and their relationship.
So it's very, like, relevant to how you date and, like, how you view relationships.
So I think it makes sense that you're like, okay, I've got this extended time.
I might not get this again.
Like, I don't want to be opening up to him on a group date and have someone come steal him.
It's kind of like, here's your chance.
Here's your chance.
Yeah, yeah.
No, I agree.
I didn't want to be in the position where I was like spilling my guts and somebody was interrupting
and then he didn't have time to process all that.
So I was like, one of one is definitely the time to do it for sure.
I never envision being with a woman.
I'll just be honest.
I'm Jamel Hill, host of the Sports and Politics Podcasts, Politics.
On this week's episode, I'm joined by basketball legend, Candice Parker,
who stops by to discuss her candid new book, The Can Do Mindset,
in which she shares why she waited two years into marriage to come out.
Like when I close my eyes at night, every night, I was like,
I need to find my prince charming.
Like, it was never a princess.
Like, that never entered into my mind.
But, you know, as I learned, sometimes life gives you things wrapped in a package that you didn't expect it.
And that was just, you know, and honestly, it took me a long time to be okay with myself.

A small lab in Texas is cracking the code on DNA.
Using new scientific tools,
they're finding clues in evidence so tiny
you might just miss it.
He never thought he was going to get caught,
and I just looked at my computer screen.
I was just like, ah, gotcha.
On America's Crime Lab, we'll learn about victims and survivors,

how do you feel like that conversation went with him um i blacked out a little bit i'm not gonna lie that was my
first time ever really sharing my entire story with somebody so it was scary to share it with him
even though i wanted to but it was also like another layer of like oh a lot of people are going to see
this about me and a lot of my close friends still don't know um a lot about like how i grew up and stuff
like that um so it was it was hard being vulnerable i definitely don't do it a lot and it was it was
tough but i'm happy that i did it yeah and he seemed receptive yeah he was so incredibly receptive
and i think like the reason why i don't get vulnerable a lot is because you know like i think
people are going to look at me differently or treat me differently and like obviously he didn't do that
like he still saw me for who I am and um and I was really appreciative of that do you think if
the day portion of the date hadn't gone as well as it did you might have not opened up to him like
do you think you're like my feelings are here with this guy I want to like share more oh my gosh for
sure I think like if we didn't have that connection and chemistry during the day and didn't have
as much fun as we did then no I absolutely probably would not have opened up to him but because we did
have such a great time.
And he really made me feel safe the entire day.
I was like, this is definitely, it felt like the right time for sure.
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
How was the fireworks show?
What was that?
It was actually a drone show.
Is that what it was?
Okay.
That makes more sense.
We couldn't figure out what it was.
Okay.
You were just as confused as I am.
Yeah.
So.
Because you guys both looked.
You guys both looked really confused.
Well, I don't know why he liked confused.
because he knew what was going on.
I was super confused.
But so we were standing in the middle of the cemetery.
Then I hear like this weird buzzing sound.
And this is where like the conspiracy theorist in me is coming out.
I'm like, are these aliens?
Like what is going on?
I literally was like it sounded like a spaceship with landing or something.
There's a bunch of lights in the air.
And I'm like they look like fireworks, but they don't sound like fireworks.
So I was mega confused.
And then eventually I figured it out.
It was so cool.
No, I'm glad that you said that.
Because I don't know what I thought it was,
but I didn't realize it was drones.
If the government actually had contact with aliens,
they exposed it on the Bachelor.
Yeah.
They're like, this is how we're going to tell the world.
Forget the aliens,
date number, 101, date number two,
Bachelor season, whatever, we're going to show the world.
That would be nuts.
That would be crazy.
That would be a legendary date, though.
That would be better than the drone.
drones that would make my life honestly i don't know why they didn't do that um okay we're gonna we're
gonna we'll play a game but before we do if you can if you could describe this season
without without spoiling it do it a little teaser um emotional emotional okay i like that
you ready you got the game i got the game
It's very easy.
It's just like fun questions about you, rapid fire questions.
Okay.
Like everything you say, everything you say could be a lie.
It doesn't really matter.
Oh, perfect.
But don't lie.
Tell the truth.
Like when I get asked rapid fire questions, usually what I'm saying is just like a lie.
Yeah, but I would say you're the minority.
You just panic and you panic lie.
You panic lie.
That's going to make me I'm going to panic lie, I think.
I don't think you will once you see these questions.
Okay.
So, question one, night out or stay in?
Stay in.
I'm a home body.
Coffee or tea?
Oh, coffee, unfortunately.
It's really bad for you, though.
I love coffee.
Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Oh, extrovert and introvert?
What's your go-to drink at the bar?
Ooh.
Okay, I recently have been in.
into a little like mescal apparel mix kind of thing yeah that sounds so good is that a you thing
like did you invent this or is that like going around no no no they they have them on some
cocktail lists and then when they don't have them on the list I will just ask for it and what do you
get I'm thinking of it's I just get like mescal and apparel like some club soda lime juice
whatever they do I tell them they make it good interesting oh my God I love mescal yeah I love
Mezcal too, yeah.
Would you ever skydive?
Absolutely, yes.
What is your love language?
Quality time.
What is your favorite quality about Joey?
Ooh.
There's so many.
I don't know.
I just like his presence.
Like the calmness of everything.
He just makes me feel so calm.
And I think that's my favorite thing about it.
