I don't want to hear about your beach vacates when I'm sitting at home sweating to death. So I'm going to go ahead and introduce our very special guests this week from the Real Housewives of New York alum. Kelly Ben Simone, how are you, Kelly? It's so good to see you. Hi, Kathy. I miss you guys. Hi, girls. My friends.

Fun girls. Kathy and Susan. Oh, my gosh. It's been a minute. I know. You guys look great. We dressed to match. You look fantastic.

Love it. What's going on with you? Yeah, give us a catch up here. What have you been up to? So I literally woke up at 4 this morning, and right now I'm in Sarasota, Florida, doing an open house and selling one of my properties down here for $22 million, which is exciting. Wait a minute, Kelly, you were not supposed to tell anyone that I was buying that property. Kathy, come on. Are you serious?

I am. I am. Yes. And then, you know, back in New York and working on all my brand partnerships, which has been so much fun. And then I just finished filming The Golden Life on E in Palm Beach, which was so much fun. Oh, my God.

That's what, okay, first of all, tell me, are you still living in New York, right? I am still living in New York. I was just in Palm Beach for two months. Okay. And what is that? Tell me what the theme of that show is. So basically what E did is they got,

Ramona singer Sonia Morgan, Dorinda Medley, Countess Luan, and myself together again after we were on Ultimate Girlship, now we are in Palm Beach, and we are living it up, and it is living it up. Kathy, see, you see, Kathy, we need a show. Yes.

Well, we definitely need a show. You should invite us. Oh, you guys definitely need a show. You guys are unbelievable. I mean, I've spent time with you. I know how fantastic. We be a hoot. And the energy.

you guys have. I thought I had energy. You guys were like showing me up. So wait, well, you know, we got to go. We have questions from way back when. Okay. Let me start there. If you know, oh yeah, let's go. First and foremost, it was it an immediate yes when you were asked? And how did Bravo find you? Like, what did they say to you? Is that the first time you heard anything about the show, the Housewives? So we were in talking. with Bravo after Ultimate Girls trip and they were just, you know, kind of talking about, you know,

the legacy, real housewives legacy and what they were going to do with Real Housewives. And when E came to me and said, we really, I think I was the second person they asked after Jill Zeran. And they just were like, we want to do this with you.

And I was at Swim Week. I was walking in Swim Week in Miami. I hadn't modeled, you know, walked as a model. for 20 years. And so I was so excited. And then I'm like, wait a minute, you want me to be on this show? I was like, okay,

what do I have to lose? I mean, everything. No, just kidding. No. It never ends. Like, it's endless. Wait, I just want to go back for a minute. You had a publishing career with L, right?

Yes. Yes. I started Elle accessories. I was a founding editor of L accessories, and I also started a magazine called Gotham magazine. and I've written seven books. So I've written four anthologies for Asseline, one for Anna Wintour at the Met,

to the history of the illustrious Hamptons. And then I wrote the bikini book for Lycra to open Miami Swim Week, which was the last time I walked in Swim Week was right after I've written the bikini book. You should be so proud of yourself. Really? What's the favorite? What's the favorite thing you've done?

Raising my kids. Oh. Raised my little rabbit girls. My little princesses love them. How old are they now? So now my youngest is 25 and my oldest is 28. God bless, God bless. God bless.

When you first went on housewife, did you feel like the new person or did you bond with anybody immediately that made you feel right at home? Tell us about that experience. So I was the new person on the block. And when I was asked to be on the show, they were like, we're really having problems

legitimizing this brand. When you come on the show, I was supposed to be on another show with Tim Gunn. And I was like, sure, why not? I have nothing to lose. I just gotten divorced. You know, I knew that I was going to be, you know, I was going to have to start to make a lot of money

because I, you know, children, you know, high school, college to pay for. And I was really ready to branch. And, you know, instead of being, I was a model for a long time and then being the editor really behind the scenes and kind of, you know, conducting the orchestra, if you will. I knew I had to be more front-facing. So when I was on, I'm like, well, why not? And was there anybody in particular that made you feel comfortable when you went on the show? So my first meeting was with Luann.

And, you know, she was living this, you know, very, like, rock star life. style, you know, St. Trope and the Hamptons and Loving Life. And I had just finished my fifth book. And I was the editor of three magazines at the time. And I had, you know, two very, very young girls who were five and eight. So we were a little bit different places in our lives. And she was very sweet. And I, you know, I don't think she really understood, like, who I actually was at the time.

because she was like, oh, you ride horses. My daughter rides horses. I'm like, well, I ride horses, but I, you know, I am an absolute workhorse right now. Yeah. I want to go back to your kids for a minute because you have done, you have had so many, a storied career and you're not done yet. What did your kids, obviously you just said 25 and 28, what did your kids think of all the things that you've done, being on reality TV, being a swimsuit model?

being, you know, being really out in the public. How do your kids take it then and how do they take it now? So I think back then they were just like mommy's working. They, you know, it's like they understood that, you know, when they went to bed, I was writing. When I went to, you know, work, they knew I where I was. And because I was the mother and the father for them, like they knew where I was all the time. They knew I was a model.

They, you know, they knew all of these things. and so they were, you know, they were raised in the entertainment business. I mean, their dad was a photographer. I was an editor. I was a model. So they weren't, it wasn't like they were, they just like they knew that their mom did other things that wasn't like, hey, I go to an office and I am in finance.

They knew that. So it wasn't something that they didn't understand. And also, you know, in New York City, like we, they went to this small private preschool where there were a lot of, you know, women and parents, mothers and fathers who were in the entertainment business. So it wasn't like they were, you know, it was unusual. I mean, I think if it was like they were raised in Rockford, Illinois, they'd be like, mom, what are you doing?

Yeah. Well, that's, you know, kids know what they grow up with, right? Kids know what they grow up with. Exactly, exactly, the way that they're nurtured, exactly. And that was their environment and a lot of their friends were like that as well. So, yeah. But good question. Well, I just, you know, my kids are grown, Kelly.

My kids are grown. And quite honestly, my two sons were like, you go for, Mom, do. And my daughter was appalled in the beginning. So I was just curious, you know, what your kids thought. Wait, I think that's a really astute comment because a lot of parents, you know, a lot of people say, like, oh, my God, were your kids upset that you were modeling? I used to take them with me on trips wherever I would go.

I mean, my youngest and my oldest, since they were, you know, two months old, they were flying with me everywhere. And I also had my parents with us. And so when I would go model, I would take my kids and my parents. So they were like going all over the place. Hawaii, Italy, parrot,

all over the place. They were loving life. Yeah. So, and it was normal for them. Right. sounds unusual for the for it's like me saying it because I'm from rockford Illinois is like that's very strange but for them they're from New York City and their mom's Kelly Ben Simone so they don't see it like that it's like what you know yeah yeah

yeah it's normalized for them yeah um speaking of New York City and and and real housewives of New York I was on Bethany Frankel's podcast quite a while ago and you know I probably have as much spunk as she does as Susan does as you have have. So one of your biggest Housewives' storylines was your feud with her. Yes. Years later, does it feel like the conflict was inevitable? Was it because the cameras were there? Because, you know, I had my own little fun with Teresa, but not anything like Real Housewives of New York.

What says you, Kelly? It's what says me, Kathy. So, you know, it was actually super interesting because she came from a very wealthy family wealthier than my family my parents were my father was a lawyer very very wealthy family went to the best schools like literally like a very very expensive college in boston and i went to college in connecticut and then college in new york you know but she went to a very expensive day school in boca rotan i just learned all this later on in life people were like oh that's that's a lie i'm like i don't you know it's not my job to tell like what people's past you know and i just thought it was

fascinated that she was just like, you're Kelly Bensonmon. I'm like, who is that? I'm like, first of all, that's not my name. My name is Kelly Colloran Ben Simone. So, Kelly Benson is not my name. And, you know, the time that she met me, I was working at page six.

And, you know, my kids were young, and I was also, you know, working in the magazine business. And so I was just leading a different life. And, I think that she thought it was something. No, I'm single, you're single.

The only difference is that I'm a single parent with two children and you're single. But it's funny because like after being an ID Pro 2 for so long, you know, now it's like I'm like, she's like, she's literally like a jilted lover. What does that mean a jilted lover? A jilted lover is someone that just can't get over. Get over what? Anything? The relationship. Get over the relationship.

relationship. I'm like, yeah, it's like she just can't get over it. She can't get over that I, you know, have done well despite everything that she tried to do to, you know, hurt my kids and my family, which is weird. It's very weird. I was like, I don't know who you are. I just obviously wish her well and her daughter well. I'm like, stay away. Please. It's, it's funny that, you know, you both have found success in different ways, but that that kind of stuff happens. We all want to believe it is because we all want to believe that. women support women and then you have these claws that are the size of Manhattan that come out coming out but just for no reason I was just like I mean I I didn't date your boyfriend I didn't steal your you know I had nothing like we had nothing to fight about like I you know I didn't steal your sandwich in the lunchroom you know I I'm like I don't know what you're talking about but wait did you make fun in the girl shower room right and I would say like I have no idea what you're talking about. She's like, yeah, you're crazy. I'm like, okay, thousand percent.

Were you ever a big reality TV fan prior to being on reality TV? And if so, what's your favorite? That's a great question. So I never watched Housewives because I was, you know, I'm a writer. And so it's my job to literally like know everything about everyone before, you know, to know the answers to the test. That's my job. And so I was just like, you know, let me just have.

fun with this. Let me just enjoy myself. I mean, I've been like, you know, working for so many years. Let me just see and have a good time and show people that you can raise kids on your own and work hard and make some sand angels and just have a good time. Well, that backfire. People were like, really? You work? And my favorite show was the Kardashians. I love the Kardashians. I was a past. Oh, God. Do you, would you do, I know you just filmed one, but what is your future with reality TV? Would you keep doing shows? I think that being in reality TV right now in this stage of my life is crucial because I'm going through so many different things.

This morning, I woke up at 4.30 in the morning. I got on a plane, went to Sarasota. I'm selling this $22 million property, creating all this content with my celebrity chef, Andrew Mullen. You know, just really in the thick of everything, meeting all these new people every single day. And then I'm on my, you know, life's journey of finding love and that next chapter. And also, you know, this age, this maturation age of our girls and boys in the early 20s is really, really, really challenging. And just to be able to kind of talk about all those aspects of my life, you know, if it helps one person, that's amazing. And we feel like at our age, same thing.

If we're helping people our age, it's all worth it. You're at a younger age, different experiences. But, I mean, seriously, if you're selling a $25 million house, why not just sit on the beach for a month and take a break? Because that's not me. It's like when you guys met me in 2009, I was ahead of three magazines. Yeah. Wait, I want to know you brought up.

we're not letting you off the whole care, Kelly. I heard you say something about finding love. I thought we met someone. We did. And we did. We did. So I met someone that was fantastic. That's what, yes.

I had a health. I know, and I had a health issue. And he really didn't show up. And I just was like, that was it. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. I get it.

The showing up is everything for me. Yep. He has to show up. How long were you with him? Six months. And he's a great guy, but he just doesn't show up. And it doesn't matter how nice I think you are. If you're not showing up, you're not showing up.

So wait, let me ask you something. Good for you. Yes, we are applauding you. But I have a question, Kelly. You are very successful in a variety of different avenues. I mean, modeling, cooking. Thank you. All those things.

Real estate. Do you find it hard to find someone who's interested in you because you are a lovely, beautiful person and you are. You're fun to be with. Forget all that stuff you do. How has it been trying to find a guy who wants to get to know you and not integrate himself into all these fabulous things that you're doing? I really appreciate that, Kathy, because it's kind of like when I'm.

I was on housewives where people thought that they were that they were meeting Kelly Ben Simone when the person they were meeting on television was Kelly Colloran from Rockford, Illinois. And they were like, why does this girl want to do Sand Angels? Why is she, you know, having fun with her life? Why is she, you know, curious to meet people? I thought she was Kelly Ben Simone. So they think they're meeting somebody or they think they're with someone that they're not. And, you know, I'm, like, I'm an introvert, but I'm also an extrovert. Like, I love to, like, sit home and read as many books as I can, but then I also like to see my friends.

You know, I think the most important thing for me is, and, I mean, this is, it's a testament to my children, is spending time with people that I care about is paramount to, you know, that's what, that's my impetus. And they think it's just like blowouts and high heels and bikinis. It's not. It's, you know, my friends, my family and, you know, my culture. Yeah. Good for you. I really do applaud that.

But it begs the question then, how do you find people that want to know the full scope of who you are? How do you meet those people? Well, that's the problem is I meet them. And then I'm like, I can, like, I get, like, feeling. It's called intuition. Right, yeah, it's called woman's intuition. Yeah, exactly. They'll be like, what are we doing tonight?

I'm like, I have to go to this. They'll be like, oh, what about tomorrow? I'm like, I'm doing that. I have to do these certain things. But I'm like, but, you know, you can, we can watch TV. Oh, no, no, I don't want to do that. I'm like, wait a minute, what? Or they're like, can we go to this restaurant?

I'm like, I'd rather know. If you want my honest opinion. Let's stay home and cook. Yeah. Yeah. Cook for me. Exactly. I was going to say, not us cook.

Let him cook for you, Kelly. Oh, yeah. Please don't have me cook. Otherwise, it's going to be really bad. Do you do dating apps, Kelly? I do. So I'm on Hinge and Ryan right now. And it's just interesting, the different kinds of people.

And I've had some really unlucky situations. Like, I'll meet a guy, and then he's, like, cheating on me with his ex-girlfriend. I'm like, you do know that I have a lot of people that know me and that text me pictures. And they say, is this you? You can't get away from. I'm like, that is not me. Wait, what excuse do they say? Oh, no, that was taken 10 years ago with my cousin Louise.

I mean, what do they say? Yeah, Louise, my cousin Louise, exactly. Well, I think, too, they think that I think what they're doing, if you want my honest opinion, Kathy and Susan, is that they are testing me. They're testing me to see if I'm going to do that. And, you know, cheaters are going to cheat. That's like the law, right? But I'm not a cheater. Like, I've been cheated on.

You are giving men way too much credit. If you think that men sit down and say, Kelly and Simone is the most beautiful, successful woman. And I really like to date her. But first, I'm going to test her, and I'm going to see if she passes my green flag test. No, but they do. I had a guy say, oh, you know, fighting with you was fun.

I'm like, I don't fight with men. I negotiate for a living. I don't negotiate with men. Like, that's not what I do. I have a twin brother. I know how to talk to men. I know how to treat men. I know what men are.

Right. I mean, I'm like, no, no, no. I don't test men and I don't spar with men. That's not my vibe. All right. So if that's your biggest red flag that you don't do, what's your biggest green flag with guys? I don't know, Kathy.

Susan, what's my green flag? I don't know. A little bit of humor. I'm just a very nice person. I mean, I just think people, we've gotten to know you on a few trips and you, I really don't know your professional life very well, but I know

you as a warm, friendly, interesting, beautiful woman. So I'm just curious. You guys are making me feel so good today. I mean, I am. We found it immediately, all of us. Yeah, but Kelly, I've got an ulterior motive here.

I want you to send the older guys that you dish away. See, you're too old to me. I want you to send them to me. But not the one that didn't show off. No, not him. And not the cheaters. But if you've got, you know. Exactly.

And the inbox just got empty. Right. No, exactly. No, I mean, I'm a very warm person. I'm a very loving person. And I'm a very committed person to a relationship. I make my men my priority. I mean, obviously my children are my priority,

but they are also my priority. I definitely make them feel like they're the only person in the room. I want men to feel great. I want them to look better. I want them to feel better. I want them to meet interesting people. I want them to be engaged. I want them to be excited.

You know, I want them to want to have a great life with me. Like, I don't want them to be like on board or I don't be around you or I don't want to do this. Like, I don't want that. Want them to have fun. Who does? So I'm going to guess that one of your deal breakers, one of them has to be a guy who doesn't show up for you. Absolutely.

Well, first of all, I have to be a good father. If you're not a good father, I can't talk to you. If you come to me and you say, I have problems with my kids, I'm going to say, I'm going to have problems with you. If somebody says I have problems with my kids or I have issues with my children or whatever, I'm like, none of that's not. Or if they talk badly about their exes, I really. Absolutely. Absolutely. If men talk bad about your ex, they're going to talk badly about me.

Yeah. I mean. See, we all think the same things. Right. I mean, literally, if I could tell you guys, Susan and Kathy, how many guys that I've gone out with, their girlfriends, like, DM me on Instagram and they're like, I need to ask you this question. This happened to me. I'm like, we're not teammates. What is going on?

Oh, like, what? I'm like, wait a minute, because we don't, we're not in a relationship by osmosis because I know this person or I went out a few days. I don't know the answer to that. Yeah. I don't know how he is with you. Is that funny, though? I'm like, oh, my God, it makes me laugh. Well, I love.

I have a girlfriend right now who's going through a breakup, but it's exactly, she gets, she's also pretty well known in this town in Austin. And she gets emails or texts from friends of friends, just thought you might want to. know and starts like they're like you said like they're all in the same team like no no we're not no no no no and then it's my favorite it's like woman to woman no no no no do not say woman to woman because woman to woman to woman would not send a text like that that's right and if you knew me you would ask but if honestly at the end of the day i think this is really good advice for anyone in a relationship the only person that's in a relationship is are the two people a relationship is with two people not with 9000 And so if you want to ask someone something, it should be that other person.

Like asking me something, I just was like, I hope you're well. Like, I'm sorry that you're going through those moments. I know it's hard, but I just hope you're well. Like, I am not interested in commiserating. Yeah. And those are things that she has to figure out her lines in the sand. Yeah. Like I know mine, but those have to be hers too.

Yeah. I don't disagree with one thing you're saying. Like, he cheated on me. It's fine. I want to be with him. And other people are like, I never want to see him again. You know, I mean, everybody has their... Everyone's got their thing for love.

I definitely don't want them to be intimidated by the people that I know.

I want them to walk next to me and have a great time. Be a team. And you know what, Kelly. You know, make some sand angels and have a good time. Yes. You know, eat too many cookies on a Friday night. I don't know. Have a good time.

Like, drink too much when you want. Like pizza night, bottle of wine. Just enjoy your life. That's what I want. That's all. I'm not asking for a lot. I'm not asking for a yacht. I'm just asking.

It wouldn't be a bad thing, Kelly, now. If they have a yacht, it's okay. Well, I also say, I mean, definitely, they have to be a similar financial situation because that's not fair. It's just, it's too much, too much stress. It's too much stress for me. Exactly. Like, I'm already working.

Yes. Already. The first one. My boyfriend is thoughtful, affectionate, and treats me wonderfully when it's just the two of us. But whenever we're with his friends, he turns into a different person. He'll make jokes at my expense

or tell embarrassing stories about me because everyone laughs. He always says he's kidding and that I need to lighten up. But afterward, I always feel hurt. Am I taking harmless jokes to personally, or is there a respectful way to tell him

that his sense of humor is damaging our relationship? And this is from Megan, from Austin. Hi, Megan, hi Austin. Oh, 100%. He's, that's a red flag. If a man is making fun of you publicly, to knock you down to better himself, that is awful.

It's awful. He should be building you up. She's so gorgeous. She's so talented. Look how great she is. She's the best this. She's the best that. But in any relationship,

male, female, whatever, any human that doesn't make another human feel, empower their superpowers, who wants that? There's too many, there's a lot of people on this earth. Like, no, that's not the vibe. And I'm sorry, I'm sure you think he's great because 30%, you know, 40% of the time he's nice.

But then when you go outside, you're his, you know, like basically his chum for humor. That's not fair. Have it ever happened to you? Oh, yes, many times, yes. They'll be like, oh, huh, she's like, you know, Kelly. And I'm like, I mean, I do have my MBA. I mean, I have written seven books, but you, you go like, you do you. go ahead, tell the world.

I'm like, oh, my God. Also, like, I have a lot of confidence because of who I am and what I've done. So I'm just like, and people are like, what? And so that's also, I don't like that too. Because what I said to the person that did that to me, I said, you know, it's just a disservice to you. They know who I am. They know exactly what I'm doing. Everybody knows, like, what my situation is and what I've done in my past.

So for you to do that, they're just like, why are you doing that? that looks that's weird. I think that I think that some men, I'm told that I intimidate men and I'm a piker compared to you in terms of success. So I imagine, I don't know about Megan and Austin, but it sounds to me like men who are insecure do that. That's what it sounds like to me. Right.

But you're just basically there, comic relief. And like, I don't want to be this one. It's like, you know, mother of my children, comic relief, that's not the multi-hyphenate you want. And if something really funny happened one time and he shares it, okay, that's fun. That's funny. You laugh with them. But if you're the blunt of every joke, it's unacceptable. Right.

Right. Well, that's a red flag. He's out. Right. He's out. All right. We have another one. Here comes the next one.

Megan, you've heard it straight from Kelly. probably not a good guy to keep in your future for terribly much longer. Okay, here's the next one. It's from Kayla. Hold on, Kathy, unless you say to him, honestly,

like that really hurts my feelings. And this, it's such a foil, how we are publicly to how we are personally, it's such a dramatic foil. And I don't understand. Can you please explain that to me? Put it on him.

Let him do the work. Why are we always doing the work? Put it on them. explain to me what is going on so we can collectively be better but like why are we always you know doing all the work

well I gotta be honest if this happened to me I wouldn't really care what his answer was because I'm kind of the guy that when he shows you who he is believe him like that's who he is so I don't and I'm not the business I've raised three kids I really don't want

to raise him forth and if he doesn't see that that is really not the way to capture my heart. You know, it's probably not going to work. For me, it would bring the ugly out, and I'd probably say worse stories about him. Like, this has got to stop. It's not healthy.

All right. The next one is from Kayla from New York City. You probably know her because New York City is a small town. I've been dating, she says, someone for almost four months, and I really like her. We've spent weekends together, met each other's coworkers by

accident and we talk every day. But here's the weird part. I still haven't met a single one of her close friends. Every time I suggest getting dinner with them, she says, eventually, it makes me wonder if she's unsure about me or if she likes keeping different parts of her life separate. At what point should I start seeing this as a red flag? What do you think, Kelly? I mean, I think the operative word is eventually, right? You know, eventually, what does that mean? Eventually. Eventually, if you were going to meet people eventually,

I'd be like, I'm going to give you eventually. Bye, bye. I mean, I think that eventually is a very interesting word. I was like, whoa, that popped up. Eventually. Eventually. Eventually, we'll do something, maybe in a few years. There's zero timeline for that.

You know, I just think it's, I think that, I think that in this day and age with social media and with, you know, how public our actual private lives are, even if you're not a public figure, everyone's lives are public, quote unquote. So I think that there is always going to be that opportunity where you are going to run into this person, you're going to run into that person. But they're not really making plans for you to meet people that they, really care about that who can give them an assessment of who you are like I think that's a disservice and I think it's kind of like you're kind of just kind of a you know you're you're not you're just like misses right now or he's missed the future now well he's not bringing him around so maybe she's not that sure about him you got to prove yourself first okay well wait a minute this is I think a

lesbian relationship. It's Kayla and she's same sex, yeah. Same sex relationship. So I don't know that that play, I'm not sure that plays into it, but I think where my mind goes, and I have a gay son, my mind who's, you know, been out for years, but maybe she's not out. Maybe there's more to the story that we don't know. I want to give the benefit of the doubt here. That's a good point. Maybe she's just nervous about that.

I think I am going to lean into that, but I also think that if you're listening, Kayla, from New York City, I think the operative word eventually was really telling. And again, like, let them do the work. I went on this podcast and I wrote this person to question and I used the word eventually. What are your thoughts? Let them do the work. Yeah. I like it.

Again, we are constantly doing, always doing the work. Let them do the work. work. I like, it's like Mel Robbins. This is just, she say let them. Let them do the work. Well, let them do anything, frankly. Just put it all on them as far as concern. All right.
