Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. I'm Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, host of the psychology podcast. Here's a clip from an upcoming conversation about how to be a better you. When you think about emotion regulation, you're not going to choose an adaptive strategy which is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome. Avoidance is easier. Ignoring is easier. Denials easier.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Complex problem solving takes effort. Listen to the psychology podcast on the. iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the latest episode of Next Question with me, Katie Couric, I sat down with Jasmine Crockett, Democratic Representative of Texas. She's holding out the fork for her party in one of the most conservative states in the Union. I think that ultimately, who will become the Democratic nominee for president will be someone
Starting point is 00:00:52 that has been out there and has shown that they won't allow themselves to be punched and just say thank you. Like, they will punch back. Listen to next question with me, Katie Couric on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I just normally do straight stand up, but this is a bit different.
Starting point is 00:01:12 What do you get when a true crime producer walks into a comedy club? Answer, a new podcast called Wisecrack, where a comedian finds himself at the center of a chilling true crime story. Does anyone know what show they've come to see? It's a story. It's about
Starting point is 00:01:28 It's scariest night of my life. This is Wisecrack, available now. Listen to Wisecrack on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone, what's up? It's Bachelor Happy Hour. We're back with another exclusive interview for you today. I'm here with my husband and co-host, Joe. Thank you for the introduction.
Starting point is 00:01:51 See, I didn't do that for you last time. Last time we were here, Joe did not introduce me. He only introduced himself, so I'm taking over with the intro. today. I like it. I like it. And we are also here with the lovely Mercedes. We are so happy to have you. She is one of the members of the new season of Bachelor in Paradise. So we're excited to talk to her today. And she was also on Zach's season of the Bachelor. Mercedes. How are you doing? I'm doing good. How are you guys? We're good. Yeah. I'm chilling now because I don't, I mean, Serena took my job and I'm fine with it. It's easy day for you, Joe.
Starting point is 00:02:27 I'm chilling. I'm chilling. Yeah, this Mercedes, so we're doing, this is more like for our listeners to get to know you a little more. You are obviously on Zach's season and you've also been on clickbait, right? Yes. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yeah. Oh, was me and Jill? Yeah. Nice. Nice. That's fun. Joe was good. Joe's good. So what have you been up to since last time we saw you? Yeah. That's a bra. You know what? That's a bra. You know what? That's a bra. question. Let me just have you, no, let's stick with that. Joe doesn't know what to do with himself now that he didn't do the intro. Mercedes. So since Zach's season, which is last time we saw you, what have you been up to? Are you living? What are you doing? How's life? Yeah. So after
Starting point is 00:03:15 Zach's season, I came back to Nashville. So before I went on Zach season, I had four jobs. So I had a very busy life, always on the go. And I was kind of like, you know what? My life was just crazy like i'm going to take a second and just relax and figure out what i want to do um so i've just been volunteering a lot at places um and just trying to figure out like what i want to do um i love nonprofits and i i want to work with them so yeah just volunteering at a ton of places working at a bar on the side which is late night but it's fun um and nashville's like the perfect place to do that i feel like i meet so many new people every day which is so fun um yeah what bar What bar?
Starting point is 00:03:56 Barstool. Do you mind? Oh, Barstool's Nashville Bar? Yep. Yep. Very cool. It just opened like a few months ago. So I went there and it's fun, say the least.
Starting point is 00:04:06 It's crazy, but it's fun. Do you have any bartending experience prior? I've been serving since I was like probably 16, 17. But no, no bartending. Nope. And then what were your four jobs before you run the show? that is an exceptional amount of jobs i know girl i was like all over the place but um i did freelance modeling i worked for um a nonprofit called national angels and i was a case manager um
Starting point is 00:04:37 and i was like with the foster care system um i was a server and then what was my fourth job um girls got so many jobs you don't remember i know i don't even remember i don't even remember what the fourth one was oh uh social media marketing for a little company amazing Nice. Wow, look at you. So you're bartending on a busy Friday night. What is one drink that you dread to have to make? Oh, well, they have, like, specialty cocktails.
Starting point is 00:05:06 So those are always, like, annoying, I guess. But because it's just easier if someone's like, hey, casemigo soda. Sure, like that's easy. Or like a beer. Yeah, yeah. I like the easy stuff. I have one more bartending question for you. because I actually had, I had an argument with my friends over this.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Okay. So when you go to a restaurant and you order, you sit down in an order, you usually tip, like we usually tip between 20 and 25%. That's the usual. Yeah. In Canada, I think it's like 15 to 20 percent between there. Well, now they're even up in it now. Now like the bottom's 20 in New York.
Starting point is 00:05:45 It's like 20 to 30. But that's besides the point. When you order a drink as a bartender, are you expecting if let's say i go and i order uh let's say there's four of us and i order four drinks from you are you expecting a 20% tip um i think it depends on the place like obviously if you're like at a really nice restaurant um definitely because those are harder to make but it's just like some simple drinks that take me like five not even five minutes usually like two bucks a drink but everyone's different
Starting point is 00:06:21 I'm not like I don't know that's such a hard question because everyone has so many different like you know because in in Tennessee servers and bartenders make $2.13 an hour
Starting point is 00:06:32 oh my gosh yeah literally $2.13 an hour so like the tips is like what we make and it's also like Jesus yeah that is insane how is that legal that is insane to me
Starting point is 00:06:46 oh my gosh that's like so below minimal wage That's, like, nothing. I know, but that's the minimum wage in Tennessee for servers and bartenders. Is it just because the hospitality industry is so pop in there that they know that you can, like, make a lot of tips? Yeah, probably, I guess. But even, like, in Iowa, when I was in college and serving, I think we only made, like, $6 an hour. They must be doing that because there's a work through with tips.
Starting point is 00:07:14 That's the only way they get away with it because there's a minimum wage that they're obviously not meeting. But I will say, so what I usually do is if I run a tab, I'm going to tip 20% after the end of it. But if I just go up in order, if I go up and I get a bear for myself and a drink for Serena, I'm probably tipping like a few bucks. You know, five, ten bucks. Yeah. Yeah. So. People do.
Starting point is 00:07:42 And yeah, paths are different too. Like when you run it up to like a hundred bucks or something, then you tip 20. But if you're just grabbing a few drinks and it literally takes me two seconds to do it, I'm like, I don't mean. Yeah, but now knowing that you guys are only making two bucks an hour, and now I have to at least. Yeah, for real. Jeez. I know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Whenever I tell people that, they're like, well. That is crazy. So since the last time we saw you, you are living in Nashville, you're volunteering, you're working as a bartender. Have you been keeping up with the show? Did you watch charity season? Oh, yes. I watched my girl Charity and she did so good and I'm so happy for her in Doughton. Me, Charity, Kat, Kylie, and Jess and I just went to Miami like, I think it's probably a month ago now. But just seeing how happy she was and like I just know their love is so real and I'm so happy for her.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And I thought the season was great. I thought she held herself so well and same with him and all the other guys too. I thought it was just a great season all around. It was a really good season. What went down in Miami? Oh, gosh. We lived it up at Live. We really went hard.
Starting point is 00:08:54 But it was a good time. Yeah, we went to pool parties. We just had ourselves a girl weekend, you know? And out of the Miami crew, how many of you are day one paradise people? Four of us. Wow. Everyone except charity, yeah, which I would hope charity is not a day one in Paradise cast, because that means her and daughter.
Starting point is 00:09:16 gotten very quickly didn't work out right no were you guys did you guys all talk about like yeah we're we're excited we're all going that were you committed by then yet or not yet yeah yeah so we were sorry no go ahead we were all super excited I feel like we would literally call each other every day like just anticipating like what's going to happen who's going to be there it was so much fun and honestly like that season I met some of my best friends and I'm sure you can attest this too like you get and you probably too but um you get so close with the cast and the girls and so they literally became my best friends and so being able to do this with them is such an amazing opportunity and it was just it was so much fun I had the best time did charity like warn you about any
Starting point is 00:10:08 of the guys going to paradise that might be there or did you try to like set anyone up in advance? She did give us like a little bit of a rundown on the dudes. Nothing too crazy because she also wanted us to like feel it out and have our own experience. She definitely told us, told us some things that maybe you wouldn't want, but it was all good. We still went down there with an open mind and had fun. I'm Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, host of the psychology podcast. Here's a clip from an upcoming conversation.
Starting point is 00:10:41 about exploring human potential. I was going to schools to try to teach kids these skills and I get eye rolling from teachers or I get students who would be like, it's easier to punch someone in the face. When you think about emotion regulation, like you're not going to choose an adapted strategy which is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome as a result of it if it's going to be beneficial to you. Because it's easy to say like go you go blank yourself, right? It's easy.
Starting point is 00:11:08 It's easy to just drink the extra beer. It's easy to ignore, just suppress, seeing a colleague who's bothering you and just, like, walk the other way. Avoidance is easier. Ignoring is easier. Denials is easier. Drinking is easier. Yelling, screaming is easy. Complex problem solving. Meditating. You know, takes effort. Listen to the psychology podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I think Democrats have, for a very long time, allow Republicans. to play them. So essentially, Republicans came up with a narrative, and Democrats decided to play into that, and that only hurt the Democrats. I'm Kitty Couric. Jasmine Crockett, Democratic
Starting point is 00:11:53 Representative of Texas, is not known for holding back. And our recent chat on Next Question is no exception. But when you hear how she got to where she is, her intensity makes perfect sense. It's just hard to imagine a world where you don't have enough people that care to do right by people. And so that same passion that carried me through as a public defender that led me to want to change laws and thinking about the harm that will happen not just to my constituents, but just generally, like, I carry that weight with me because you've seen it up close. Yeah. Listen to next question with me, Katie Couric on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Don't let biased algorithms or degree screens or exclusive professional networks or stereotypes. Don't let anything keep you from discovering the half of the workforce who are stars.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Workers skilled through alternative routes rather than a bachelor's degree. It's time to tear the paper ceiling. and see the stars beyond it. Find out how you can make stars part of your talent strategy at tear the paper sealing.org. Brought to you by opportunity at work in the ad council. All right, hypothetical. You're in Miami, you're single,
Starting point is 00:13:20 but you're committed to going to paradise. A guy walks up and you're super into him. You're really attracted to him. And he starts talking and you guys hit it off. And you find out he lives where you live. live. Oh gosh. What do you do?
Starting point is 00:13:37 That's a tough situation. No, you just met this guy. I understand you just meet him, but do you, do you continue the conversation and just maybe see where it goes within the month leading to paradise or you just like, I'm leaving in a month and I'm not going to even let myself potentially go there? I feel like I would just let them know, like, hey, this is. what I'm doing like I've before I met you or anything like this I'm doing this okay like we can talk but there's not going to be anything that comes out of it you know but just like I don't think
Starting point is 00:14:16 getting to know someone is like a bad thing as long as I agree like honest then I don't see a problem with it yeah but I agree I'm glad that didn't happen though I would have been in the yeah it's like you I feel like everyone like leading up to paradise is like everyone like going to Paris is obviously looking for someone but the month leading up they're like I'm looking for no one like no one come find me like no one like this is the first time that I'm like don't even look at me don't talk to me I was in full lockdown in Canada because of the pandemic going into paradise so I was like this kind of works out because I couldn't meet anyone if I wanted to right now literally yeah no for sure and I'm like no one even look my way honestly I cannot deal with anything like that
Starting point is 00:15:00 so how did you how did you prep for paradise did you prep no honestly i got there and i'm like why why did i not like think anything through like my clothes like everything i'm like it's so funny because i feel like all the girls like they all had like these dresses and like they looked so good and obviously i brought like a few right but i think like paradise was super chill Like, I'm like, oh, I'm going to be like in like, you know, shorts and a top, like, but every night the girls are like, oh, no, we're being cute. Like, we're showing out. And I'm like, with what? Like, look at my suitcase.
Starting point is 00:15:40 I don't have anything. How many suitcases did you bring? Huh? How many suitcases did you bring? I bought two. Okay. Yeah. So I had a lot of clothes.
Starting point is 00:15:51 They just weren't like the Paradise Five. I don't really know what I was thinking. No, I get it. I did not pack great for. paradise either so i'm right there with you because you're just kind of like yeah okay like here's some dresses like here's some jean shorts some bathing suits like you kind of pack like you're going like to it all inclusive for like a week with your friends and it's just then you're like oh yeah i'm on tv just like fully forgot that fact i'm like oh yeah yeah you're like i'm on tv you're trying
Starting point is 00:16:17 to have like some one of these guys fall in love with me like maybe i should have been a more strategic seriously that was me that was so bad i remember kiley like one night she was like received what like what was going to your head i'm like dude no idea no nothing nothing's going to your head i was just like we're doing it i don't know what's going to happen we'll see i mean i man that's fair that's how i packed for paradise i'm like it's a beach i've been there before joe barely packed for paradise yeah it worked out worked out we're literally getting married look at you now i know congratulations by the way oh thank you thank you we're um were there any guys because, yeah, you've been in this world for a little bit now.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Were there any guys that, like, slid into your DMs from Bachelnation? Um, there were, like, a few, but none of them went to the beach. Okay. Was there anybody in particular you were hoping to see there? Yes, I was hoping. My, like, top guy was Tyler Norris. I was really excited to meet him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Tyler Norris off of Rachel's season and Paradise last season. And we see him there. We see, there's a spoiler and we see you say like he has 45 abs or something, right? Yes. Yeah. Yeah, that was me. I know, Kylie's like, don't show to look him. I'm like, I do.
Starting point is 00:17:39 We can't. He's not a day one guy, though, but we know he's there because we saw him in the teaser. Yes. No. What about Tyler made you interested? Honestly, I don't really know. I feel like, because I didn't really watch. Rachel and Gabby's season that much, um, not until the end.
Starting point is 00:18:00 So I saw like a little bit of him, but I just felt like he just looks so sweet and kind. And that's like, like, if there's one thing about me, like, I feel like every guy I've like talked to or dated. Like if you look at them, like, you're just like, oh, he's like so sweet and like cute looking, you know? So I feel like he just like definitely like matched my vibe. And yeah, I just, that was like the initial attraction, I guess. I just sound like.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Do you have a physical like type? Because him and Zach, I wouldn't say like look alike, but they both have that kind of like similar, like aesthetic. You know what I mean? Well, they both, they both are, they both have brown hair. They're both like white, like brown, like kind of like middle length hair, brown eyes. I don't know. Like you put them in this similar category of looks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:46 You would say they look very different from one another? I'd say they look very different. No. No. They have like similarities, but I don't think they look like. like yes yes i would say like if you're like oh like my type is this they could both fall into that category yeah for sure like i love guys with like dark hair dark features dark eyes um and then honestly just like pretty boys i love pretty boys i'm stuck for a pretty boy
Starting point is 00:19:14 okay so i would put i see but that's the thing i don't think they fit in the same care I can't get over this. He's not going to be able to move on. I think they're two different, I think there are two different categories. Like, I would say Tyler, Tyler, right, Tyler. Norris, yeah. Tyler Norris is like pretty boy category where Zach is more like. Zach's less of a pretty boy.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Yeah, he's more like, um. Look, I'm just going off of like two white guys with brown hair. Okay. It wasn't that deep. That's fair. Yeah, I don't know. We're out of podcast. I'm just just talking to talk, you know?
Starting point is 00:19:49 um okay was there anybody um that you don't get along with that you didn't want to see down yeah no no i feel like for the most part i get along with everyone so there was no one where i was like oh my gosh if they're there i'm gonna like freak out no i was excited to see everyone that i saw were you when you walk down those steps were you nervous or excited i was definitely nervous like leading up to it and until you get like top because there's like a holding space right and then they're like all right time and i'm like oh shit okay like it's actually happening and i was just like okay confident we're good we're gonna find a man and so i just walked down and all my friends were there already so it was super fun to see them but i was definitely
Starting point is 00:20:33 nervous for sure i kind of like that little like i'm like what is happening yeah like for for everyone on this podcast like it you're in like this holding little like holding deck It's like a hut. It's like a hut. It's like a tree house. And you're just kind of waiting. You're waiting. You're waiting.
Starting point is 00:20:53 And then you walk down these steep steps. And you're just like. Very steep, long steps. Yeah, there's so many of them too. I feel like I was walking for like five minutes. I know.
Starting point is 00:21:03 You're like you're going. You're going. And then all of a sudden, well, for us it was David Spade. Yeah. Which was so crazy. And we didn't know.
Starting point is 00:21:10 I remember being like, oh my God, David Spade. But for you guys, you know, you're like looking. You're like, where is Jesse?
Starting point is 00:21:16 Like, Why am I still going down these stairs? But you know, once you go, once you start that walk, you're walking, you're walking into reality TV. Oh, yeah, you're in it. There's no wrong. It's like, you know when, like, in football, they like run out of the tunnel, like onto the field. Yeah. Like, that's the Bachelor equivalent.
Starting point is 00:21:34 No, literally. That's how I run out. So you are a bartender. Wells is a good friend of ours and a good friend of the beaches of paradise. how were Wells's drinks in comparison to your drinks? Oh, in comparison? No. No, Wells was a great bartender.
Starting point is 00:21:56 He was always having conversations, which is great. That's how you get good tips, you know, making friends with everyone. There you go. But no, he did good. Honestly, I drink so much wine, so I wasn't easy. Really? Red or white? White.
Starting point is 00:22:10 I feel like, honestly, all of us girls were always drinking wine. Like that was our choice Really? Yeah. I don't think anyone on our season drink wine. Really? Yeah, Noah did. Noah drank red wine.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Like deep dark red wine. That's whack. I feel like white is like good when it's like warmer out. Because red wine I feel like makes me like hot in the face. I'd probably like. Yeah. And then you got like a little like red wine tea. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:38 No, not the vibe. So we stuck with the white. Not the vibe. Not the vibe. When you went down to Paradise, did you have any like thing that you were like I want to leave here engaged or were you just like I'm just open to seeing how this goes yeah I feel like going into paradise I was just like you know whatever happens happens I'm a big believer and like literally everything happens for a reason so I know that I was given this opportunity for a reason and that the people that are going are going to be there for a reason so I was just like you know if it works out it works out if it doesn't it doesn't I was just very open and I knew that the people that are going and I knew that going into this, I just wanted to be utterly myself and show who I am and someone likes that and falls in love with that. That's great. But yeah, that was just my thing.
Starting point is 00:23:24 I was like, I'm just going to go down there and be myself, see what happens. But I was definitely open to engagement. I was like, I could see a ring on this manor. I don't know. I can't tell. I can't tell. I can't tell. I can't. No, it's actually driving me crazy. Like, I've been trying to figure out this whole podcast. Like, I could see you right now with someone, but I could all to see you saying, I don't know, you're like, you're really hard to read right now and if you're with someone or not. And I genuinely have no clue what your story is down there. Yeah. I'm Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, host of the psychology podcast. Here's a clip from an upcoming conversation about exploring human potential. I was going to schools to try to teach kids these
Starting point is 00:24:06 skills and I get eye rolling from teachers or I get students who would be like, it's easier to punch someone in the face. When you think about emotion, regulation, like you're not going to choose an adaptive strategy which is more effortful to use unless you think there's a good outcome as a result of it if it's going to be beneficial to you because it's easy to say like go you go blank yourself right it's easy it's easy to just drink the extra beer it's easy to ignore to suppress seeing a colleague who's bothering you and just like walk the other way avoidance is easier ignoring is easier denial is easier drinking is easier yelling, screaming is easy.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Complex problem solving, meditating, you know, takes effort. Listen to the psychology podcast on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I think Democrats have, for a very long time, allow Republicans to play them. So essentially, Republicans came up with a narrative, and Democrats decided to play into that. And that only hurt the Democrats. I'm Kitty Couric. Jasmine Crockett, Democratic Representative of Texas, is not known for holding back. And our recent chat on Next Question is no exception. But when you hear how she got to where she is, her intensity makes perfect sense.
Starting point is 00:25:26 It's just hard to imagine a world where you don't have enough people that care to do right by people. And so that same passion that carried me through as a public defense, that led me to want to change laws and thinking about the harm that will happen, not just to my constituents, but just generally, like, I carry that weight with me because you've seen it up close. Yeah. Listen to next question with me, Katie Couric on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If a baby is giggling in the back seat, they're probably happy.
Starting point is 00:26:05 If a baby is crying in the back seat, they're probably hungry. But if a baby is sleeping in the back seat, will you remember they're even there? When you're distracted, stressed, or not usually the one who drives them, the chances of forgetting them in the back seat are much higher. It can happen to anyone. Parked cars get hot fast and can be deadly. So get in the habit of checking the back seat when you leave. A message from NHTSA and the ad council.
Starting point is 00:26:36 Can you tease a little bit or tell us a little bit, bit about the truth box that we saw in the trailer yes the truth box so well literally pulled it's all around the bar and it's like we have this new thing it's called the truth box you put whatever you want in there and we'll read it a lot and I'm like oh great this is going to be wow such a good idea what a shit disdiver such a good idea we're just like stir in the pot here like literally um so I knew that it was going to bring some bring some heat to the beach um there was definitely some things in there that were kind of you know not i would say difficult to hear it was just like truth you know like what people saw and what like because in reality it's kind of like okay i can say
Starting point is 00:27:26 this without saying it to their face you know so people had more confidence to put whatever they wanted in there um so yeah the trolls on the internet literally it's like a Red and red on the beach. Were there any like, were there any like mean comments or is all just kind of just there was a few mean ones. Um, but yeah, there was there was a few mean ones in there about some people. Okay. Yeah. Um, you're, you're so getting off of the topic of Paradise real quick.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Wait, I want to ask her to tease one more thing from the trailer. All right. Then we got one more question. we'll play a game. Yeah. Okay. So another thing that we saw
Starting point is 00:28:10 in the Paradise promo was there's a Paradise wedding. It looked like happening. Is there anything you can hint at that? We've been saying if there's anyone
Starting point is 00:28:20 that's going to be getting married down on that beach out of the original cast that's Blake Boynes. Yeah. I don't know. Someone does get married
Starting point is 00:28:28 on the beach, though. Like Foley says vows. Foley does everything. Like a legal marriage. A legal marriage on the beach. Yep. It happened. It was fun.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Were you there for it? Were you present? So it could have been, you know. Could have been me. You never know. Much to watch. Okay, getting off the topic of Paradise real quick, I just want to know. Do you have, you're someone that has a bunch of jobs?
