Starting point is 00:02:29 Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome back to Golden Hour. We're back for part two with Pascal. Let's get right into it. Yeah, but that's what the online dating to me is a, you know, that was a trend. I think right now what's going on in Chicago, there is a lot of mixer.
Starting point is 00:02:57 So there is a lot of an event where, you know, you go there and then you mingle and you meet somebody. Have you done it? Have you gone, Pascal? Yes, I've got to a lot of mixtur. And, you know, women are coming up and giving their phone numbers. And, you know, most of them I don't call because I'm not interested. You know, but you never know.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Yeah, I mean, you know, you know, you know, I, again, I've been around the block quite a few times. I know what I like and I know what I don't like. Do you go up? Do you give women, do you walk up to women at these mixers and give them your phone number? No, I don't give them my number. I take their number, but I don't give them. I'll call you. If you don't call me, Pascal, get a Google number.
Starting point is 00:03:40 So let's move a long a little bit. Tell me what your thoughts are on Jordan and Emily. There's a nice thing. I mean, I love, I love Jordan very much and I love Emily as well as Jordan. I just think they seem like they're having a great time. And Jordan and I had a long conversation about, you know, where this is going. You know, I mean, I think, you know, he's 63. She's 40.
Starting point is 00:04:03 I know that they've talked about children. and I said, you know, I said, you know, I said, you know, I mean, I said, you know, Tim, it's like you. Yeah, I mean, is his gig, is his stance, you know, I mean, I think to me, you know, we've been parents, we've raised children, we know the energy, the time it takes to raise children, the financial, you know, we need, and to me, my children are gone, and I'm, you can imagine, I'm happy, I am, they are gone and a dependence. So I will never start at 63 a family.
Starting point is 00:04:39 I will not. But what do you think? They're living together. They're enjoying it right now. But what do you think, Pascal, before we move on to our golden advice, which you're going to be great at because you are so direct, giving us advice to our listeners. But one last question. What do you?
Starting point is 00:04:55 That, I agree with you. It's hard to start over and have kids. But what about the flip side of it? If Emily, not just Emily, any woman who's 23 years. younger who's engaged in that kind of relationship is she signed up, as you said, to change diapers in 15 years? Like, I don't want to do that. What woman wants to do that when she's that young? You know, you know, there is, you know, in a situation where the woman is successful, who has a good career. You know, I mean, I was married and we had a nanny who was coming up every morning
Starting point is 00:05:30 and at one time the nanny was living with us and she took care of the kids and she's change the diaper and she took him in the park and she feed him and every time. So when we come home, we used to play with the kid. That was a fun. You know, I think, I think if you have the financial stability to have somebody to take care of the kid, you could have a kid at any age you want. I personally think it is unfair for the children, okay, to have a father who is 65 years older than him. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:06:01 You know, I just think, I just think then, you know, I mean, I, I, enjoy my children. We go for dinner. We have a conversation about politics, a conversation about life in general. And I think I still could relate to him and we still have a 50 years difference between the two of us. But I don't know. I mean, I can't. I wasn't just talking about children. Yeah, I wasn't just sorry about children. I was talking about a young wife having to take care of an infirmed partner. Like it's all fun in games now, but talk to me in 15 years.
Starting point is 00:06:34 That's the only point I was speaking. I think that the discussion they should have together. I think that sometimes the couple should discuss about, look, you know, I'm in that age and you are that age. And, you know, I mean, I talked to Vanessa from age of attraction. I had her in my podcast. And I said, Vanessa, you're 50 years old. He's 30 years old. In 10 years, you're going to be 60 years old.
Starting point is 00:06:56 It's going to be 40 years old. He's not even in his prime. I'm 40 years old. I was dating at 28 to 30 years old. Why would I want to date this 60 years old? I said, so I think right now it all looks great and paper, but there is no future. The kid at 30 years old is going to want a kid at 40. You're going to be 60.
Starting point is 00:07:13 Are you going to be able to? You pass metapause. You can have children. So I think it's very challenging. If I'm speaking for myself, absolutely not. I will never date someone who wants children. Absolutely. I don't even want to date someone who's got young kids.
Starting point is 00:07:32 me because I don't want to raise anybody. We have grandchildren now, you know, and you can enjoy them when you want. Grandparenting is the best. Send them home. Send them home. You clearly have opinions, Pascal, and I want you to help us answer some questions. Every week, you know, we get questions from listeners. So we're going to give some expert golden advice.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Are you willing to join in? Yes. I always, Pascal. Always. Okay, go ahead. Go ahead. Susan, take the first one. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Okay. Good. This one is from Jess, and she's from Austin, Kathy. My boyfriend and I have been together for two years, and I love him. But his friends are starting to drive me insane. They all still very much in their boys will be boys, er. And every weekend turns into a staying out until 2 a.m. I don't want to be the girlfriend who tells him he can't go out.
Starting point is 00:08:29 but I also thought by our mid-30s, we'd be doing something other than recovering from a Saturday night at the bar. Am I being boring, or does he need to grow up a little? I think a person he said, get rid of him, go find somebody else. You know, Pascal, I'm loving you. A few years ago, I dated that, remember?
Starting point is 00:08:52 Yeah, I mean, I could be around it. Four o'clock in the morning, the music's blaring. They're doing lines. and drinking, I'm like, I can't do this. This is not me. But here's the thing. She said, you know, I can't, I can't. Like, you can't tell him he can't. That's the
Starting point is 00:09:09 stupidest comment ever. Telling a grown person, he can or can't, you're right, Pascal. Hit the road. Get the road. Say goodbye, good luck. When you grow up, come and see me. If I'm around. It sounds like she's more mature than he is. You know what? When you take a 35 years
Starting point is 00:09:25 old woman and you take a 35 years old man, the 35 years old women are way more mature than the men. You understand that. So I think the woman at 35 years old wants to start built in a family, wants to start built in a career. The men still want a party. Once you hang with his body, drink beers, you know, and stay up to 2 o'clock in the morning and go to cancer. I see it once a year you get together with all your college friends and you have a weekend. That's it. So tell him to get lost, find somebody else. The rave is over. Send him on. All right. Here's our next one. It's from Taylor.
Starting point is 00:09:59 and she is from Nashville. I've been dating this guy for six months, and he still calls me his quote-unquote friend when he introduces me to people. We are very clearly not friends. I sleep at his house three nights a week. I've met his mom. We're exclusive, but apparently I'm his buddy.
Starting point is 00:10:20 I finally asked him about it, and he said he doesn't like labels. What does that even mean after six months? I wasting my time? What says you, Pascal? Is she wasting her time? No, I don't think so. I think that they should have a conversation about what, you know, I mean, calling a friend in the end of a day, your partner should be your best friend. Am I right? I mean, that's, that she's my friend. She's my best friend. I mean, if it's important for her to be called my girlfriend, I think that sometimes she should talk to him about it, say, hey, look, you know, I feel like a, you know, I feel like a
Starting point is 00:10:59 We are in a relationship. You know, we're moving to be more serious together. And I think it'd be more important to introduce me as your girlfriend, not as your friend. You know, I think it's all about communication. Yes. I have a question. If he calls her his friend, isn't that a label? Yeah, I mean, yeah, it is my friend.
Starting point is 00:11:22 So when he says he doesn't like labels, I'm going to say he doesn't like commitment. And that's okay. But he's already labeled her as a friend. I used to introduce Fred as my friend and lover. So my friend and lover. Yeah, well, but then once you were with him exclusively, Susan, you call him your boyfriend, your partner, you. I'm not arguing with it, Pascal.
Starting point is 00:11:44 That's all it is here, right? It's a label. It's a label. I mean, if the guy wants to go, this is my friend, Jenny, you know, that's great. You know, I mean, if you say, oh, that's my girlfriend, Jenny. That's a bit more intimate. And if it's important to her, I think. they should have a conversation.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Relationship is all about communicating. And I think to me, if she communicated with him, say, hey, look, you know, I feel a bit uncomfortable when you call me a friend. Are we friends or are we dating? Are we boyfriend, girlfriend? And, you know, how do you feel about that? They let him come back with the answer. And that is a really good point.
Starting point is 00:12:20 That's a great point, Pascal, because you said she needs to talk to him. And all we have in this question is I asked him, and he said he doesn't like labels. My question to you, Taylor, is, did you have any deeper conversation after he said he didn't like labels? Because that's not communicating, just asking a question, getting an answer, unless you say exactly how you're feeling and how he makes you feel. Exactly. Yeah, I agree. I agree. We're going to have some fun with the dating rapid fire, but also, you can submit your burning questions to us by going to bachelornation.com slash golden hour. Come back each week and see if it's your question that we're answering.
Starting point is 00:13:00 All right. Are you ready to do dating rapid fire? Are you ready, Pascal? Okay. We're going to ask you some fun dating rapid fire questions. First thing comes to your mind. And you're just going to answer the first thing that comes to your mind. Don't give it too much thought.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Okay. Okay. Dating apps or meeting someone at dinner? Meeting someone at dinner. I agree. Yeah. First date drinks or dinner? Drinks.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Who should pay on the first date? The men. I love this. Biggest first date turnoff. Tardiness. I love that answer. I say the same thing. Oh, that's so good.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Okay. Most attractive quality in a woman. Presentation, I would say. You know, when somebody come up well put together on a date, I think that she takes pride of herself. I would have thought you would have said confidence. Yes. Yeah, okay. You're right.
Starting point is 00:13:58 That's all. All presentation. That's all part of the same. Presentation. Somebody who come up is to get something. Yes. So, Chette, you want nice hair, makeup, nicely dressed, the whole pack. Good about yourself walking in, yes.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah, I want somebody who come up. If you come on a date with me, you have to put yourself well together. I don't want you to come up with a toned-down gene, a hair not down, no makeup, and your nails have to have broken. A t-shirt and sneakers. And, and no, it's not for me. Love it. Okay. Could you date someone who hates Patty?
Starting point is 00:14:29 who hits Paris. Paris, yes. Who is Paris? It doesn't matter to me. I know. Yeah. So I got just before we get, do you remember Pascal? I think it was on our last podcast when we had you on.
Starting point is 00:14:45 You talked about what's her name in New York's and that fix update and she wanted to go to a beer place and you wanted to go to a fine restaurant. Do you remember that? Oh, that was you talking about the girl from housewife? Yes. You know that has wife for Kelly Ben-Simon. Yes. Kelly Ben-Simon. I'll never, I will never forget that when you said, I want to go to a fabulous restaurant and have wine,
Starting point is 00:15:08 and she wants to go on burgers at the bar, something like that. Yes, she had a strip join bar, yes. Yeah, that was very funny. Okay. Have you guys heard of faux journaling?
Starting point is 00:15:52 Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading. So we don't like to use that word anymore. A panel of New Yorker cartoonists. Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class? No! I've been dying too. I'm so sorry.
Starting point is 00:16:05 I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th. That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30. No way. You have to come to the last bookstore though. Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. A panel of Eurovision participants. And we do a little Halloween sometimes.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Does the Pope dress up? He winks on Halloween. It's right up next to the microphone. I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. You never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween. Listen to artists on artists on artists on artists on the IHeard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. By age 11 or so, at least 70% have a phone. Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls. We spent real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now. So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this end up. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging.
Starting point is 00:17:27 You could think of belonging as, I can be. myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down with therapist Keir Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips. You have on the dressy.
Starting point is 00:17:49 You have to cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the fathers doing the work at home. We have to get off her device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want. want you as your adults in their life to miss out on. This has been our surviving middle school run. Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this. I'm Dr. Joy.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Mimi Brown. And every day on front page podcasts, I help you make sense of the stories shaping our world. My goal is to deliver clear, trustworthy information in a format that fits your schedule.
Starting point is 00:18:37 And when a story deserves a deeper conversation, I'll sit down with experts, newsmakers, and thought leaders to help you better understand the headlines. I spoke with Gary Mayer, Eddie Melton, about what's happening on the ground, whether race is playing a role, and what help is available for families who simply can't afford the added cost. Joining us now is Tennessee State Representative Justin J. Pearson. Thank you so much for having me. I appreciate it. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Whether it's a major national story or an issue impacting your community, join me on Front Page. Listen to Front Page from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Dear honies, this is goodbye. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patramathers, and her husband Michael, nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members
Starting point is 00:19:28 to let them know that they had died by suicide. By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland. Petra and Michael were by all accounts healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known. I keep coming back to I truly hope that
Starting point is 00:19:56 Patriot was 1,000% on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible for my mother's staff. I'm Leon Nafeck. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patriot and Michael's letters, as one married couple trying to understand another.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Listen to death of an artist on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Chicago or Paris for the perfect date. Definitely Paris. I mean, for the perfect date, I mean, I think before you take somebody to Paris, you got to know, I live in Chicago. So for me to take somebody to Paris, we have to have a strong connection to take her to Paris. Yeah. So I would say Chicago, living in Chicago, the perfect day will be Chicago for now.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Yeah. Yes. Okay. The question that everyone wants to know. Oh, boy. Would you ever do Golden Bachelor in Paradise? Absolutely not. I knew the answer.
Starting point is 00:21:04 I knew the answer. Tell us why. Why? I just think that it's the mixing up the young and the old together. It's not a great concept. I think to me one, I remember one time, Katie. I was asked many, many, many, many, many time to be in golden in paradise. And many, many, many, many time I said no.
Starting point is 00:21:26 I just didn't think that was a good fit for me. What if it was all golden, though? If he was all golden, if he was all golden, that will be a different game. Okay. Okay. But if it's just the younger, no. The tent to me when I was asked to be in the golden in paradise, he was, I would have loved to go there as an advisor to the young generation.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Well, that's how it was. That's how it was. Yeah, but it was, I mean, I didn't feel like, yeah. I didn't feel like he was like that. I mean, if Captain Kim was all over April, you, and I thought you and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, he was going to get. married. No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, we can't even kiss.
Starting point is 00:22:06 We never kiss. I don't know what show. Well, whoa, whoa, hold on. No, no, no. I don't know what show you were watching. You got me fired up, Pascal. I don't know what show you were watching. I never kissed Keith.
Starting point is 00:22:19 We kissed, I kissed him on the cheek. We were always friends. The producer said, come on. Don't you want to kiss him? Don't you? No, I'm never dating, Keith. I love him as a friend, but that's as far as it goes. So I don't know what show you are on.
Starting point is 00:22:31 If you were asked to be the golden bachelor, would you? Yes. That's sometime I will put a lot of thought. I will have to see the logistic, what is involved, what type of commitment needs to be, the time needs to be. I mean, I'm summer retire, so I have the time of the, I could live whenever I want. The 10 is I want to know, number one, you know, the commitment.
Starting point is 00:23:00 you know, I'm a free spirit. I could pack tomorrow and go to to Germany, you know, I could go anywhere. So I want to know the commitment to be the bachelor. I want to know who's going to be in the bachelor. I want, you know, I mean, I want to have a little sister about the woman to pick because if I go there. You can't change the game now.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Yeah, see, you can't change it. The game is what it is. If you were asked to be it, would you take that change? You don't get to pick the women. They pick the women. And for a guy who doesn't want to go, public, you would be public. It would be public. I mean, I think, you know, that's a great experience. Meen, look, to be quite an issue with you, the experience I had be in the golden bachelorette was a
Starting point is 00:23:44 lifetime experience. Yes. He was, and I never watched reality TV before that. I was, I was very excited. It was a lot of fun. I've seen behind the scene. I've had a chance to meet wonderful people. The matter of fact, two weeks ago, I hosted. People doing your laundry. I love it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I don't do my laundry. I don't cook. I don't clean.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Here's what I thought. You said you date women 50, late 50s. The age of the golden bachelor women that you'd be dating start at 60 and go right through 70. So you, I think you would have a hard time finding women. You know what? You'd be quite an issue with you. Ketty, I was in the final roles at the bachelor with male, okay? and I end up having dinner with all the girls in the Morton Steak House in Alley after the show.
Starting point is 00:24:37 And I would have to say there was some beautiful woman in that show. But that's because Mel was younger. Mel was only 63, I think. You're 71. So they would scale the women older. That was like us doing our show. Joan appears and she's 60. I thought senior meant 65 and up.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Right. Right. Yeah, I mean, I think to me, I think to me, I've seen the girl from Mel's season were 60 and up. There was no, nobody younger. No, but most of the women on Mel's season were in their early 60s because he was only 63, I think, at the time. I'm saying if you were the golden bachelor, by then you'd be 72. They're not going to bring in 50-year-olds because they're not golden. You know, I think, again, age is a number. You could have a 65. I have 68 years old in a fabulous shape who's taking care of herself. And I have a lot of friends of mine who are beautiful women. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:36 So as you're saying, then, you know, again, it's not just the age is, the personalities, the energy, the presentation, is the way, their lifestyle. You know, I mean, we have to be able to match me. You know, when I went into the golden bachelorette with Joan and I see those 23 guys, we don't live the same lifestyle. Any one of them, we don't. No. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:57 You know. Like that's, we're all different. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm there. And I say, what am I doing here? Those guys, you know, I mean, I don't want to sound kind of, you know, I'm filter. Those guys are not my people, you know.
Starting point is 00:26:09 And I felt like, what am I doing? And I end up, you know, in Jordan and Mark and Jack and all those guys. And we end up community. But we don't, we don't have the same lifestyle. Right. You know, I mean, if I take Jordan, I love Jordan. Jordan hit pizza. I eat fillet.
Starting point is 00:26:26 You know what I'm saying? I mean, you know, and so to me, again, it's not about the age. It's about the presentation, the sophistication, the star, somebody who's got some style, possess, somebody who present well, somebody who's got a great conversation, who's worldly, who's been around. I want women who are educated, women where I could have a conversation about politics, about economy, about fashion, about the traveling, you know, I've been all over the world. So to me, I don't want somebody who never leave Ohio. Right.
Starting point is 00:27:00 I mean, you know, I mean, you know. Well, I hate to say this, Pascal, but we have to wrap up here for two reasons. One, our time has come to one. And the other one is you got to sit there and start returning the phone calls from all the women that are going to reach out to you after being on this podcast. I don't, I don't return any phone. I don't, I don't get involved in social media. I mean, I'm watching a joke. I understand.
Starting point is 00:27:25 understand. But you have in their own podcast, you don't announce things. I mean, that's social media. I'm not in charge of that. She's Jimmy take care of every time. I don't want to tell. We were, by the way, we ended the podcast with Jamie. We know. Yeah. And we were supposedly having you, Susan. And we ended because of her. I think Jimmy had a different direction. She wanted to go more into the woman, the metapause and stuff like that. And she said, I want to go more into that direction. So we have a new podcast actually right now with Jordan, his Pascal prospective. And then we're talking about the two guys talking about life in general, what's going on and stuff like that. So it's been doing so well so far. It's an eight minute segment. And then it's a zoom between him and I having a
Starting point is 00:28:09 conversation. And I like that. I like that. But I wish Jimmy the best. And maybe one day we'll have you. Oh, yeah. I'll give you eight minutes. We can talk about, uh, I'll talk about filet, Susan. You can talk about pizza. Okay, so you got Jordan and you got me, catchy, okay? It's perfect. Well, thanks, Pascal, for joining us, truly. And the pizza. Thank you very much. It was very nice to meet you both. Okay, seeing you both. I'm happy to see a successful podcast is and I'm honored you've asked me and anytime you need me. I'll be more than happy to help you. We love. Knocking up again. You get some more info. Yeah. We love catching up with you and you never know. We may be at your doorstep when we come to Chicago.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Oh, yeah, I'm calling you when I come. Any time, any time you come to Chicago, you have a place to stay. Oh, thank you. You have a friend to hang with. I promise you that. Thank you. Thank you, Pascal. Thank you.

Starting point is 00:29:21 Jeremy Colhane, Patrick McDonald. And we're the hosts of the Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists. artist podcast. The improvised character comedy podcast where each week a new panel of artists discuss their craft. Join us for a panel of wellness influencers. What I try to do is faux journal. I don't know. Have you guys heard of faux journaling? Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading. So you're so we don't like to use that word anymore. Okay. A panel of New Yorker cartoonists. Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class? No. I've been dying too. I'm so sorry. I'm I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th.
Starting point is 00:30:00 That's crazy. Does the Pope dress up?
Starting point is 00:30:18 He winks on Halloween. He gets right up next to the microphone. I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls.
Starting point is 00:30:47 We spend real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child's psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now. So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this end up. We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust. There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted. And then there's fitting in. Spinning in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection. Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers,
Starting point is 00:31:28 sitting down with therapists Keir Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage. You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips. You have on the dressy. You have to cross your legs. That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the father's doing the work at home. We have to get off her device. But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want you as
Starting point is 00:31:47 your adults in their lives to miss out on. This has been our surviving middle school run. Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this. I'm Dr. Joy. Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Mimi Brown, and every day on Front Page Podcasts, I help you make sense of the stories shaping our world. Each day, I break down the biggest headlines, provide important contexts, and explain how these stories could impact your life, your family, and your community. My goal is to deliver clear, trustworthy information in a format that fits your schedule.
Starting point is 00:32:25 And when a story deserves a deeper conversation, I'll sit down with experts, newsmakers, and thought leaders to help you better understand the headlines. I spoke with Gary Mayor, Eddie Melton, about what's happening on the ground, whether race is playing a role, and what help is available for families who simply can't afford the added cost. Joining us now is Tennessee State Representative Justin J. Pearson. Thank you so much for having me. I appreciate it. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Whether it's a major national story or an issue impacting your community, join me on Front Page. Listen to Front Page from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Dear honies, this is goodbye. In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author, Patramathers and her husband Michael,
Starting point is 00:33:14 nailed letters to dozens of friends and family members to let them know that they had died by suicide. By the time you get to Shletter, both Petra and I will be dead. Next stop, Wonderland. Patra and Michael were by all accounts, healthy, happy, and in love. Why did they do it? And what did it do to the people they left behind? I would have given a million reasons to not leave this world had I known.
Starting point is 00:33:40 I keep coming back to, I truly hope, that Petra was a thousand percent on board with the plan. Do you think of him as having killed her? Yes, I do. I hold Michael responsible for my mother's staff. I'm Leon Nafak. And I'm Alice Gregory. Together we set out to interview everyone who got one of Patriot and Michael's letters, as one married couple trying to understand another. Listen to Death of an Artist on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:34:13 All right, Susan, let's get into this. We were just on with Pascal, and there's so much I want to talk about, and I know you do too. What's the first thing that hit you from that interview? My very, very first was him not labeling his girlfriend as a girlfriend. Like, I don't know if she's aware of that. He doesn't want to put a title on it. He most definitely stopped us and said, well, you know, it's interesting. I agree with you 100%.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Well, do you remember when we asked him if he was dating more than one woman? And he said, I don't really want to talk about that. He seemed like, you know, I'm just casually dating. And yet, you and I have both seen pictures of him with his girlfriend. So to your point, does she know it's casual? Is it really casual? What if she listens to that? Our podcast, she's going to probably ask questions.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Or perhaps, Kathy, I could be dead wrong. And she's okay with whatever because he clearly stated, he's not getting married. Yeah. You know, he likes to have a nice woman and take her out. show her the lovely part of life that he can do. He does very high-end dates. Yeah, but, you know, did you know? He impresses women.
Starting point is 00:35:30 Yeah, but I love that. I do too. But when he said, you know, all those things you just said and then she'll come back to the house and may spend the night, but then she leaves the next morning, goodbye. Like, it felt very cold. Throw away to me, you know, just you can dispose of girlfriends. You know, they're not. So I thought that was interesting.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I also think he's interesting in that this whole age thing. He admitted to wanting to lie about his age on the show. And he admitted to much like, you know, Mel and some of these other guys on Jones season, they want to date younger women. And they, it's so interesting to me that they don't think 15, 18, 18. 18 years younger is a big deal. And I mean, don't you think that's a big deal? No, because I just dated somebody 13 years younger.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Well, that, yes. I think anybody can do that. But it's up to the woman. It's the woman's prerogative. But I wonder if the woman is okay, if you repeat date somebody, and now you're going into the next phase, then I'm talking about sex. If you're going to have sex with somebody and you don't have a label, if you will,
Starting point is 00:36:53 I think there's some women. It's just a casual relationship. I don't casually have sex, but maybe I'm a prude. I don't know. I don't think, I think it depends on the age. I think Pascal is in the 70s and whatever women he's sleeping with are younger than he. And I probably would not be okay with that, sleeping with a guy and having them say to me, you know, it's just casual.
Starting point is 00:37:18 I would not be okay with that. Would you? No, I don't think I would either. I don't know. I think he's an interesting guy, and I think women are taken with his accent, and, you know, he has a beautiful car, and he, as you said, Susan,
Starting point is 00:37:35 he takes him to great restaurants. They do fancy things. Yes, I would have fun daily. I would have fun, but guess what? But you can't get your heart in it. That's exactly. You have to be on his sense. same level, and this is just dating.
Starting point is 00:37:49 It's just a casual. If two people feel the same way, then so be it. I just couldn't be me. Yeah, I couldn't do it either. So I don't know about Pascal. I think he's a great guy. I think it was a great interview, but I'm with you, Susan. I want to know what his current girlfriend thinks about the casual label that he got,
Starting point is 00:38:08 that he was. And just one more thing, and I'd say this right to your face, Pascal. When you asked him if he would be the Golden Bachelor, he's had so much. many demands. He'd have to choose the women. He'd have to, I was laughing. Pascal, if you're listening, you don't get to. You don't get to choose them. Okay, so we've got a little time here left. Let's do one bonus question. What do you say? You got it. And this one's from Lauren and she's from Atlanta. I'm divorced and recently started dating a guy I really like. Everything was going great until I found out he's never lived with a woman,
Starting point is 00:38:43 never been engaged and his longest relationship was about a year. He's 42. My girlfriends immediately said red flag, but I also don't want to judge someone just because they haven't followed the traditional timeline. Would that worry you or am I letting my friends getting my head? Ooh, that's a perfect one because it's both, right? Tell me. Tradition. We all think, you know, you've never been married before. or like dating a man that doesn't have children. Oh, he's never going to understand family dynamic. Not everybody falls in love enough to get married. That's quite possible.
Starting point is 00:39:25 Well, no, she didn't say get married. She said that he never lived with a woman. I find, so I'm going to take issue. Shocker of all shockers. I think that it's different when I won't date a guy who hasn't been married. Not even kids. I prefer you have kids. The reason is if you haven't experienced that you're selfish, you don't know. But Kathy, you're judging somebody that maybe never fell head over heels.
Starting point is 00:39:53 Right. And so where I was going with that is if a guy, he may have been in love and just not wanted to live together, there's other extenuating circumstances. We don't know. And by the way, 42 or 43 is not that old to quote, not have lived with a woman. Not everybody says, hey, I really like you. Let's get a condo together. I don't think, I think that your girlfriends are getting in your head, Lauren, and I think that you ought to just see with the relationship. His longest relationship was only about a year. That's the only part. Like, what happens after a year. That's when you truly start to find out who the other person is. Oh, look at you. You are learning lessons now. Oh, yes. I'm so grown up today. I think, You know, you've only just started dating him. I would, Lauren, if I were you, first of all, I don't know how long you've been divorced.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Have you taken enough time to heal? We never, we never have enough data in these questions to answer them. But Lauren, I don't know how long you've been divorced. I think you're putting the cart before the horse if you're worried about this. You said you really likes them. Yeah, but you just started dating. So, you know what? Hang in there.
Starting point is 00:41:05 I don't know if it's a red flag or not. Tell your friends like I do, Kathy. Just pick up the pieces after it's over because I'm running straight from. Can I just tell you guys, since Susan's breakup picking up the pieces, I've been shoveling them with a bulldozer into Mac trucks. But you know what, Lauren, I mean, you got to take chances in life. That's right. You might be the one. You don't know.
Starting point is 00:41:27 Yeah. Or have that conversation with them and say, are you not interested in ever sharing the same house with somebody or, you know? Well, look at us, Susan. We just finished on another podcast talking about the fact that we. didn't want to live with a guy 24-7. I want to clean up after everybody. Lauren, Susan, does not want to clean up. If you are interested in this guy, slow your role, see what it's like, date him for a while,
Starting point is 00:41:56 enjoy the ride. And then if you start getting the, I'm going to say it again, I've said it on this podcast how many times we are intuitive women. We know in our heart of hearts whether something's wrong, right? If it doesn't feel quite right, guess what, Lauren, it probably isn't. So give it some time and then make your choice. But right now, go and have a good time. And don't let your friends get in your head.
Starting point is 00:42:18 There you go. Except me, Susan. I can get in your head. Of course. Okay, so Susan, I have a question for you. If you, so Lauren, this guy's never been engaged. His longest relationship was a year. Would you personally think it's a red flag?
Starting point is 00:42:35 Would you date a guy? Not a 42-year-old, but would you date a guy? Yes, because I always think I'm going to change their minds, you know, I'm the one. Yeah, I guess there's something with me. I, I, maybe there's something, maybe I'm the red flag. I don't see it as a red flag. I, I think that, um, but you just said you don't date anybody that's never been married or
Starting point is 00:43:02 lived with somebody. Well, but I'm not 42. I'm saying back at this age, maybe Lauren's boyfriend was building a career. We don't know. know the circumstances. You know, he might have been building a career. He might have. You mean at our age, if we met somebody like age, you would not entertain that because he's
Starting point is 00:43:22 never been in a long relationship. I'm right. At my age, I will not date a guy who either has not been in a long-term relationship. And by long-term, I'm talking like marriage length or married because, but it's not because I think there's something wrong with him per se. it's that I think if you're if you've never had to sacrifice
Starting point is 00:43:46 for someone else you're probably not going to start in your 60s starting to sacrifice you know what I'm saying? You haven't learned how to do that and you and I are too old Susan to start training men. Oh God.
Starting point is 00:43:57 So that's what I'm saying. Anybody anything. But Lauren's boyfriend at this age who knows? You know we don't know. Maybe it's a bad picker. We never thought about that either.
Starting point is 00:44:09 He might be a great guy and you might be the one. So take the chance. And there's Dreamboat Susan who's going to be. Yes, of course. She's going to. I live in my fantasy world. But this is something I'm going to say that Kathy says all the time.
Starting point is 00:44:21 And I, to this minute, don't know how to do it. I quote, protect your heart. I have never said those words. Yes, you do. Don't get all in. Susan, protect your heart. Do not get it. How do you do that?
Starting point is 00:44:35 No, what I actually, I've never said protect your heart. What I say to you is you need to. you need to slow it down. You mistake chemistry for love and you jump in too quickly. That's not the case with our Lauren from Atlanta. But you say you don't let your feelings, your heart get involved until you know. That's protecting your heart. I've never been able to do that. Well, you know what? There's hope for, you know, even blind squirrels find an acorn, Susan. So Google that with chat GPT, Lauren, and learn how to protect your heart.
Starting point is 00:45:05 There you go. Let us know. And then when you find out, please email Susan and taught to do it. I still don't get it. All right, thanks to all of our listeners.
