Starting point is 00:00:01 Hey folks, welcome to another episode of Intimacy Coordinator. I'm your host, Joel Kim Booster, and I am here with another panel of incredible guests to talk to us about all the messy things about love and relationships and everything in between. Today, we're talking about exes, specifically, is it possible to be friends with your ex? We get into everything from how to exit a relationship to best lay the groundwork for a friendship with your ex or if it's even a good idea to stay friends with your ex in the first place. I've got Johnny Pemberton and Beth Stelling joining me. It's an incredible episode of great discussion, so here we go.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Folks, I'm very excited for my guests today. You've seen this comedian and actor in Fallout and Superstore, and his new film Mermaid is out now. It's Johnny Pemberton. Hello, Johnny. Hi! And my next guest is a comedian and actress who you know from specials like Girl Daddy, and if you didn't want me then, and her latest is called We're Looking for People Who Do Huge a numbers on social media. She's currently on tour coming to a city new you. It's Beth Stelling.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Hey, good to be here. That's such a great title. Thank you so much for both being here. How are we doing today? Are you ready to talk about love today? Of course. I mean, I'm ready to go second. You're ready to go second. I'm ready to talk about love. Both of you pretty much experts. Johnny, you're in a relationship right now. How long have you been in the relationship? Oh my God. I don't know. A very long time. 15. I'm married. I've been married for a while and we're We were together before we got married. That's a crazy thing. Oh, that's a little.
Starting point is 00:01:40 That's weird. We were together a while before we got married, too. So such a long time where it's like, I feel like I don't know anything about, anyone who talks about current dating stuff, I am just fascinated. When was the last time you were dating? Oh, my God. I mean, like, pre-apps? Are we talking pre-apps?
Starting point is 00:01:58 Before, I think before. In the odds. The early odds. George W. Bush. George W. Bush, that's when you were dating. George W. Bush. George W. Bush. When I was dating.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Whoa. So before there was even smartphones, really, I guess. I do that too. Is that crazy? When was I single during Clinton era? Yeah. Wait, well, you and you're in a relationship currently as well. I'm currently in love, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:17 How long has your relationship been? We've been together about almost three years. Almost three years. But, Beth, and correct me if I'm wrong, you are a bit of a serial monogamous. I am. You cannot be alone. It's true. In fact, well, I probably haven't been alone since I was a baby.
Starting point is 00:02:33 That's good, though. That's how you're supposed to be. Everybody around. Always somebody around. The longest I was single was before this current boyfriend. How long? It was from January to July. Oh my God, that's the longest.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I've been single that I can recall in my life. Since you were an adult. Like even was this, does this stretch back to high school too? Oh, yeah. Because my first, yes, yes, it does. I feel like I'm trying to think of like first real boyfriends. And to me that would be high school. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:01 And lucky. And I dated a always into the older, gentleman. I think I was a freshman and he was as junior. Then I sophomore dated a senior and that was one of my longer ones. That was my first love I would say. And how many percentage wise of the men that you've dated? How many have you been in love with? Mm hmm. All of them. All of them? I called it right? Damn. 100%. Here's the thing. Yeah. I mean I used to have a thing though that very much felt like, you know, if somebody was like I love you. I was like I must too, you know? And I either got there or like I always found love and appreciation for the most part for a lot of, like I can look back fondly
Starting point is 00:03:39 and appreciate a lot of things about the people I've dated, most of the people I've dated. Well, and that's really, that's a great segue as we move into today's topic, because today we are talking about X's specifically. Is it possible to remain friends with X's? Johnny, I know you're going to have a lot to say on this topic. He still keeps in touch with third grade dates. Third grade date. Before we dive into the topic, though, I do have a little bit of an icebreaker question that I want to ask both of you really quick. And you can answer this in one of two ways. The first way is what's the dumbest reason someone's given to break up with you? And then the alternative is what's the dumbest reason you've ever given to break up with someone.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And Johnny, you can outsource this too. If you have a friend, a cousin, a former lover. How many people did you date before your current partner? I mean, what's dating? That's the question. I'm going to loosen up the guidelines for you specifically just to make this a little bit easier on you. I think I was a bad guy. I think I didn't really date so much as, you know,
Starting point is 00:04:36 you know what I mean? Like, just spend time with. I was not taking people on dates. Yeah, hook up, right. If you tried to somebody hook up. So did you have a lot of situation chips? Like people that you were like hooking up with regularly, that maybe they wanted to move it into more romantic territory,
Starting point is 00:04:54 but you kind of had to cut things off? I remember one a while ago. Bending them off. I think I texted her after we hadn't talked for like three weeks or something like that. And then she, what did she say? I think she said, get a clue. I was so offended by that. Wait, what did you text her?
Starting point is 00:05:12 What did you text her after three weeks of silence? We talked about hanging out on a Sunday or something like that. And I was with someone else. We met like a party, friends of her friends, hooked up a little bit there. At the party. At the party, yeah. Up against the fridge or? I don't.
Starting point is 00:05:29 In a laundry room? It was up against a fridge, actually. Holy shit. I was there. In the kitchen. House party, yes. In the kitchen or a garage fridge? I know, this is a house fridge.
Starting point is 00:05:39 A house fridge. I wish it was a garage fridge. It wasn't cool. More private if it was a garage garage. Yeah, because I was going to say, usually at parties, people gravitate towards the kitchen. They're hanging in the kitchen. They're yapping in the kitchen. And then there you are pinning some girl up against the fridge.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Rearranging the letters. It wasn't so much pinning. I can't do a lot of pin. I'm not big enough to pin. Yeah. I can suggest a pin, you know what I mean? So three weeks of silence, you hit her up and you say what? I think it was like, do something on Sunday or something like that.
Starting point is 00:06:06 And she said, get a clue. Yeah, because obviously I had. Well, had she reached out to you and you ignored her for a bit? This is so long ago. I can barely remember. Also, communication was different then. Like, there's just so much. It's the things you have to learn to get through your issues as you go through life
Starting point is 00:06:22 or like a text message is not a subpoena. Sure. But it feels like that because everything's right in our hand. I'm willing to go along with you. I'm willing to go along with you that communication was slightly different. back then. But I would say that this the baseline, like three weeks is a long time no matter what era.
Starting point is 00:06:38 It was way too long. I learned a lesson. Yeah. What is that lesson? You got to clue. You have to communicate. You can't just like, this is before the word ghosting was a thing. I think I mean, I sort of did a light ghost. You were on the forefront. You were innovated. You essentially, yeah, you were, in fact, you spooked her. Yeah. You were gone so long, you popped back out.
Starting point is 00:06:58 And then you came back to haunt her by wanting to hang out on a Sunday, the Lord's Day. Right, she's very Christian. And that probably triggered the hell out of her. It's kind of cute. It's not sexy. But it's kind of, it's endearing. Oh, you were morning and a Sunday.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Why did you stop talking to her for three weeks? Because I was with someone else. Oh. I actually left that party to go pick up someone else. Oh, my God. But so European. But neither were relationships. It was just like.
Starting point is 00:07:30 No, not at all. Not even close relationships. No, it was definitely. like not the relationship at all. Yeah, there you go. There was no. You didn't. And then what?
Starting point is 00:07:37 Did that one sort of end? And you were like, let me hit up. Fridge lady. Gosh, fridge lady. I mean, what else are we going to call it? Yeah, I think it was maybe like, God, I just can't remember. I think maybe the other girl hooked up with one of my friends at a party. The web you weave.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Oh, wow. At a party? Same fridge? No, this was a party. This was a different place. much not as nice of a place. I see. So you only hook up against a frigid air,
Starting point is 00:08:08 top of the line, fresh model. This guy was hooking up in front of a white fridge. Beth, what's the dumbest reason someone's dumped you or you've dumped somebody? Here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I didn't get dumped until I was undefeated for a long time. I'm totally undefeated too. Get a clue kind of counts, but I mean... It does kind of count, but no. And so it was several years back. I want to say pandemonium times
Starting point is 00:08:34 Pandemoniums That's a tough time to get dumped Right well It's like I was getting out of something Which it was a great time to like try to get out of something Because you're like is that you're gonna be separate But then I agreed to go on like a walk with masks type situation which is already awkward
Starting point is 00:08:49 Bringing me back to some of the worst walks Some of the worst dates I had some of the worst dates of my life during the pandemonium But also because I had never really dated To your point Like I sort of dated I've tried to make this a joke, but doesn't make sense truly. The way I always thought of it was like, I kind of dated like a cat brings roadkill to their owner.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Like, oh, this is for me. I'll take it. You know, like, I dated what came to me? Right. And so then when I was like, oh, what do I want? And it doesn't mean those people weren't great. Like, we're just interested in me. And I was like, okay. And it sounds like you have a pathological need to not be alone.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Yeah, sort of, something like that. Yeah. And also. Pathological. Rude. I'm just kidding. Dr. Booster. Dr. Booster.
Starting point is 00:09:32 That was the alternative title of this podcast, Dr. Booster. Dr. Booster. Anyhoodal. Yes. I guess I was sort of thinking maybe I'd try to date and they were terrible because it was just sort of going on a walk or talking to someone. One guy wouldn't stop vaping. But when it came to dating and somebody like something that lasted a little longer,
Starting point is 00:09:51 we were hooking up for a bit and it wasn't like, I don't know what he was up to, but when it was the pandemonum, I think everybody was being maybe a little more careful. Either way. We were just talking up and then he ended things with me. And truthfully, to your point about me not wanting to be alone, I was also already done, but I wouldn't do it. So it was sort of like I was just staying. Like those are issues I've hopefully since worked through. But the idea that you don't want to be alone or I'll just kind of keep going and see what happens.
Starting point is 00:10:18 But I did get my feelings hurt because he broke up with me because in my head, I'm like, well, I don't want to be with you either. I just wouldn't do it. You can't fire me. I quit. Yeah. So I definitely, but that's an ego thing. but his excuse was the easy things just got hard
Starting point is 00:10:33 and what he really meant that sounds like from a book or something yeah it probably is the easy things just got hard but what he really meant was like because in during that time period it was like what do you want to eat I don't know we're walking somewhere
Starting point is 00:10:44 we go to the grocery with masks and they cook something are we ordering DoorDash and he arguably and not to be rude had some sort of eating situation like an eating disorder like would only eat very specific
Starting point is 00:10:54 or very healthy things and I'm not like that at all so I think that's also part of it He was really, I wrote, I've written jokes about it since, but he was, was really concerned with my, what I was sort of eating. Like at one point in time, he was like, I'm just worried about all the sugar you eat. And I was like, eyes on your own paper. You're worried about that. That's concern trolling at, of the highest degree.
Starting point is 00:11:14 So he was so consumed with what he was eating. So the easy things got hard. It was like me being like, let's get burgers. And he's like, oh, those are really bad for you. Personal training? And also, what a time, what a time to be like, to use that specific excuse. because it's like, bitch, look around. Every easy thing is hard right now.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Yeah. Like there is no uncomplicated way to date right now. Yes. So just like say what you mean. So I then, because I remember I was doing some fundraising for a Dayton politician that I was, whatever, did a little Zoom fundraiser thing to try to get her elected in my hometown. My sister was on it. He called and said, we need to talk. And I was like, I know what this is.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Which I was still making me nervous. This is before the easy things got hard statement? Yes, this is when we talked on the phone to break up. and I knew it was coming and I wanted it, but I was also scared. It was just like, you know, your feelings get hurt because we did hook up. And I'm always going to get someone emotionally attached if you're talking more in depth than just saying this is just a hookup. Anyway. And also I get to know people and things about them.
Starting point is 00:12:12 And I felt like he never really did that with me, which some people are always doing that. And other people will do it because they don't want to get to know you. Yeah. So after he said that, I said, well, maybe I know, I know. He hadn't said it yet. he's like, I just think it's not really working whatever. And I go, well, what do you think it was? Because truthfully, I did want to decompress. I wanted to both be able, not to get mad at him and say, but actually get to break it down.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Because I was on the same page. How long it had it been? How long had it been? I'm guessing about three months, I think. Okay. So right around the time I think we're a conversation like that is owed. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:44 And I said, well, what do you think it was just to sort of get it all out there? And I kind of wanted to help him too because he never asked me about myself. And I knew his brother's name, his parents. That's bad though. That's always such a bad thing. But I did want to give him some feedback because I know he doesn't want to be alone. Like I know he's looking to find somebody. And so I was literally going to say like, you know, I don't, and I got to say it.
Starting point is 00:13:04 But he goes, he goes, so I said that. And then he said, does it really matter. And I said it does matter, I think. I said, to be honest. So I said, what do you think it was? Because the call was like, let's talk. I was like, I know what's coming. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I don't think it's really working. I said, I hear you. I agree. You know, I'm not just saying that because I'm hurt. But I said, I agree. What do you think it was? And he said, does it really matter? And I said, that's when it really did kind of make me bad.
Starting point is 00:13:32 I'm sure I was feeling more than I do now. What does he do for a living? He's a general contractor? Oh, he's in the family. I can't wait to talk to you later. What an idiot to say, does it matter? Because it's like, babe. I'll see again pretty soon.
Starting point is 00:13:49 It does matter. It does matter. And also, what a treasure trod of material you could get out of this. Like you never say no to uncomfortable conversations when you're a comedian. Because some of the most uncomfortable conversations I've ever had have turned into closers, baby. Closers. I got jokes out of it for sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:08 They're in my, they're in the current. But you did finally get it out of him. You did finally get it out of him. Yes. Does he have jokes about it? He's in a different realm of us. Okay. But same.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Improvisor. Oh, is that? No, but? Zip. When you told him your notes, did he get defensive? Did he absorb them? I really wasn't looking to like,
Starting point is 00:14:33 what am I trying to say? Tip for tat. I just really thought, let's just talk about it. I felt you didn't get to know me. And he was like, well, I think he may have said something like, oh, sorry, you feel that way or, okay, I hear that. He didn't receive it like angrily.
Starting point is 00:14:47 And so, yeah, we did keep kind of sure. But like for me, I'm somebody who's gonna leave an interaction in the parking lot and think about it over and over. So I needed to say, he wanted to talk about it. And he did reach out down the line. How far? I don't know, six months. There was one time where I thought, oh, is somebody circling back?
Starting point is 00:15:07 But I was already with somebody, of course. But I did think for a second he was circling back. Because, you know. Struggling back meaning come back like, hey, you still double. Like, you were really cool. And I'm not saying like, I fumbled the bag. the bag. I'm into bad food now. I'm ready to date. Sometimes it just doesn't
Starting point is 00:15:22 imagine that's okay. I think obviously as you as you grow as an adult you don't have to villainize the person and be like say things like. So he really, he was for sure. One of the things he said though was because I had offered, he would talk to me about things and I would offer feedback because I thought that's what we were doing. That's an adult thing
Starting point is 00:15:38 to do. And he absolutely just wanted to be talking. So he in those moments would push back. And I'd be like, okay. So then six months later he said, And I'm not just saying this, like, you were right. He reached out again and was like, it was about something personal that would actually help his life.
Starting point is 00:15:56 And he was like, you were right. I was able to talk to blank and sort of work things out. So thank you. Oh, so he was thanking you for fixing him for the next partner that he was dating. A little. You did the work. You invested and somebody else is reaping the rewards. I mean, can't we all move on and try to learn something from it a little?
Starting point is 00:16:13 Most people know, yeah. Do you think you've grown from each of the guys that you've dated and broken up with or been broken up with? Yes, I really did think that for the longest time. But then last relationship before this one, the current one with Adam, the previous relationship just rocked me. And that person, you know, was going through difficult times, struggles with addiction and things like that.
Starting point is 00:16:35 So they were having their own problems. But I bring that up to say, I thought I had fixed myself and healed myself. Like I went to so much theory, I went to healing trauma programs, like, to be like, okay, I've worked on myself. I know why I'm gravitating. Gravitating. Gravitating towards these people, these types of people,
Starting point is 00:16:52 whether it's alcoholics or addicts or whatever, or because of a lot of the reasons that I work I did on myself, my upbringing, all the things, right? Check out her albums, check out her specials. Yeah, yeah, if you want to know what's happened to me. But I just mean, so I thought, oh, I'm healed. Of course, healing is never linear, and your mind is a garden, you've got to continue to weed.
Starting point is 00:17:11 But I shocked myself dating this last person. And I'm not trying to drag them. A person before current. Yeah, but yeah, I thought, whoa, how did I pick this person? Knowing what I know and learning what I've learned, it shocked me because it really rocked my, I mean, by the end of that one,
Starting point is 00:17:29 my self-esteem was at an all-time low. My self-worth was so low because they obviously were struggling with putting many things before me, drugs, alcohol, a lot of things. So yeah, that rocked me to my core because I am looking for intimacy and connection, unless you get it.
Starting point is 00:17:44 But I was also trying to get that from that person. they just obviously weren't able to do it. We could blame the pandemic because it did start during that time. Pandemic, I blame it for everything that's happening. It's possible. Literally, I haven't read a book and God knows how long. And I used to be a reader. But I blame the pandemic for that.
Starting point is 00:18:03 I blame the pandemic for my inability to pay attention to anything longer than a YouTube video. I blame the pandemic for being irritable today. It's been many years since it's been five years. And yet here I am, still feeling angry about it. It did absolutely blow. So answering, and then of course from that I learned something. I just thought I had learned that particular lesson to be able to stuff something out like that. This person is totally reliant on things.
Starting point is 00:18:35 But I'm not a drug person and I'm not, I don't know. No. Lame. You guys know that. So Johnny, I guess I'd like turn to you, now that we move into the sort of meat of the episode, And this might be a difficult question for you. But how many X's have you had before your current? Like X's, I mean, I was in a relationship for most of college.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Okay. So that was like, you know, a long... And it wasn't Brett. No, no, no. Oh, well, that's a relationship. I was it for maybe three years, I guess. That's a long time. That is, especially in college.
Starting point is 00:19:21 I might be a serial monogamous too, kind of in a way. You might not be addicted to drugs, but you're addicted to monogamy. Can't get enough of this stuff. There is. Listen, we all have our own drug and being in a relationship is yours. I guess it's a little bit. And so then, I guess my question is, is how did that one end? I broke it off.
Starting point is 00:19:40 You did. I did break it off. I can't believe I did it because she was, I think she was mentally unwell. Okay. Like, I'm not going to say the C word. Mm-hmm. Crazy. Oh.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Okay. I was like, buddy, you better clarify, because there is a C-word. word and I Well, because every guy I know my ass what happened with her relationship like, oh, she was crazy Oh, she was crazy
Starting point is 00:20:05 I think you were probably a little crazy too Oh yeah, that's a fun lesson to learn over time. All the time, she's crazy, she's crazy. When you press those guys on like what made them crazy and it was like, oh, she would text me
Starting point is 00:20:17 like all the time and get mad when I didn't text her back like what a crazy bitch. She had a career she was devoted to she's so crazy about her career that existed long before I met her. And we'll presumably last younger.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Usually the full sentence is missing a couple words, which is I and drove. Her crazy. I mean, I think it's always a two-way street. I also, I like crazy. I definitely do like crazy. I think she became. Keeps fresh. Too crazy.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Yeah, there's a lot of guys like me who get bored really easily, you know? It's like, if a girl's like super nice and great, everything's great, it's like, oh, I'm just, I'm dying. This is a common thing, I think, for both men and women, though, of all sexualities, is they do gravitate. Some people need a little bit of drama to stimulate. Like, because there, I can't tell you the number of my friends. A lot of female friends will, like, break up with people because there's, they equate drama in the relationship with excitement and engagement. And then when, and when things are going fine, it, a lot of people don't know how to operate within a healthy relationship. And it's like a Joan Crawford thing
Starting point is 00:21:30 You just have to make drama Otherwise you're just so bored I'm trying to think if I can relate to that one buddy I'm really proud of you for that Well think about that lot because I think it's why most actors Who act out are like totally What do you say? Like when they're like really misbehave on set
Starting point is 00:21:45 It's just because they're bored Yeah And they're creating like a drama Yeah Because they're not like challenged enough I'm so happy being bored Yeah In my relationship like there is no
Starting point is 00:21:58 it is because I'm in a healthy, happy relationship where we communicate. It's unfortunate, too, that he is not a big generator of jokes for me in my relationship because I am happy and it is healthy. And so there's not a lot of drama to mind anything from. And unfortunately, writing about a healthy relationship is just not funny. Yeah, I will say, I definitely thought that. I remember, you know, whatever, 2009 being like, if I'm not tortured, I can't write jokes. You know, but the truth is you can.
Starting point is 00:22:30 It's opposite. And you have. You want to have a non-dramatic life so you can put everything into your work. Make the work be active and crazy and have your life be boring. Like I'm trying to make my life as boring as I possibly can right now. Yeah. I don't make it like super boring, but I haven't done it yet. It is the best.
Starting point is 00:22:47 So now I guess the main question I have for both of you today and the thing that we'll be talking about in depth is the possibility of being friends with your ex. And so Johnny, well, I'll circle back to you. Are you still friends with this crazy bitch that you dated in college? He visits or in the infirmary. I have no idea. No, I have no contact whatsoever. No contact. Do you have any contact with any of your situation ships, hookups or anything?
Starting point is 00:23:13 Were you able to continue on? I don't think I do, actually. At this point, the people I've hooked up with, like in comedy, like 15 years ago, I just see them and I don't think about it. You kind of forgot about it completely, right? Dissociate. It took years. Because now.
Starting point is 00:23:25 It's not even hot. I can't remember what it looks like, for example. Right. Oh. Yeah, I've got no connection at all. Must not have been very memorable. You know? It's a good or bad way.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Certain things about it were. Oh, like what? Look a little like driftwood. Is that what you mean? I've definitely seen some that are interesting shapes. I don't like it when it looks like a root vegetable. Yes. I saw one that looks like a witch's nose.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Oh, witch's nose. In the sense that there was also like a little like the reason I say that is because there was like a on the side of it. That's not good. Isn't that? I think you would draw. I mean, I didn't touch it.
Starting point is 00:24:02 It was it was bestowed upon me via text message. Oh, so you never had to interact with it physically. Wait. Which probably you shouldn't, right? I wonder if it's the same person I'm thinking of. Because if it is the same person, they send it out with reckless abandon to people they're not even attracted to, like me. Is that because it's so kind of distinctive they like it?
Starting point is 00:24:21 I think it's like a little bit of like exposure. therapy like where I think that like they sort of are like if we set if I send this out so much and it is a weird looking dick but like I just send it like sort of carpet bomb everyone in my life with my penis and then everyone will be sort of desensitized to it and I just remember going why did you do that I need man my life is boring my life is truly boring I always forget that well just start sending your dick out I need I definitely don't need drama in my relationship I'd rather not have it. But you've had it.
Starting point is 00:24:58 You've certainly had it. Yeah, I've definitely had it. Are you friends with any of your exes? Yes. You are. Percentage-wise, how many do you think out of all the guys who think dated? It's a lower percentage for sure. I'm not the person that's like, um, honey, I'm going to lunch with this person again.
Starting point is 00:25:12 But it's a lower percentage and also it depends, too, on how much time has passed and the nature of the relationship. You know, there's people where I've had to just be honest with my current partner and be like, do you want to know if we're going to be around somebody that I've hooked up with? What does he say? And I think his answer was like, yeah, I guess I wouldn't mind. So I don't feel like you guys know something I don't. Yeah, it is. It's everybody's preference, I think.
Starting point is 00:25:39 But he's not a jealous person. And he was like, you can tell me if you want. He's told me because at one point in time, he's like, if we go to this party there, might be this one person, just letting you know. I'm a little embarrassed, but, you know, just so you know. I was like, okay, thanks for letting me. Even the guy, he, does he want to be? to know just about the problematic ones or does he want to know about all of them?
Starting point is 00:25:58 Like, I felt like we were going to be in close quarters with one of them. And I was like, should I just let you know? And he was like, yeah, that's cool. Thanks for letting me know. Close quarters? Like, you have to share in a room. You have to talk. Twin's eyes bed, bunk beds? More like.
Starting point is 00:26:11 We're doing a reality show together with my ex. Just so, you know, it's covert. It's being filmed. You know, think about when you'd be around other funny people. It's like jury duty. You all know that you're around. Yeah, we're all the same. We're doing voir dire together.
Starting point is 00:26:23 That's season three. Oh my God. You a lawyer? That's crazy. No, but I could be. Why dear? What makes it easier? What makes it work to be friends with an ex?
Starting point is 00:26:35 If it was a good experience, if there was like positives to the relationship that didn't amount to romance, but there were things that you liked about to each other that led you to each other. Like a real estate lawyer that's helped you with some contracts or maybe they're like a really awarding dermatologist. You just have to go see them. Now that, I understand. My first love, we reconnected, my high school. Okay. Yes, he came around to a couple shows, but we've lost touch again. How many?
Starting point is 00:27:06 But we're around each other for a little bit. He came flying back into your life. Well, it makes you wonder, because I actually was curious about that, because I'm still friends with his family. Oh. And so was my first love, my first huge heartbreak. It took me so long to get over. High school? And the family was so loving to me that I remained in touch with them until this day.
Starting point is 00:27:22 Like I stay with them when I play a club. What? Yeah. And I love him. It's almost like having a, yes, a godmother or something. And I didn't have my dad. I didn't have a dad like raising me. So his dad was in a very non-creepy, very non-hands-on way, like a father figure to me that was kind and supportive.
Starting point is 00:27:40 So you were like step siblings. You were doing some of the grossest porn imaginable with this person. Exactly. Yeah. That's gross. But when he came back around, because he had been, who cares, long story, short, but he circled back. Now, I really assumed it was friendship and stuff like that and wanting to reconnect as humans because he had shared that with me.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Like, he was such a huge, important part of my life. I feel like I sort of dropped the ball and reconnecting. So now I'm wondering, like, I don't know if there was ever a time in that those, like, whatever that was five or ten years that he actually was interested in trying again. I don't think so. My current boyfriend Adam would argue yes. Why? Because he reached out to him.
Starting point is 00:28:18 He's like, hey. Hey, is it okay? Make a move. Get this package to Beth. I need to get this to her. She's blocked me. He, like, was uncomfortable a little bit because it was early us dating. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:28 And he came to, he would meet me out on the road a couple times. Yeah. One time he stayed in my room, but we would never, like, that time I was single, he could have tried something and didn't. So I felt like if he really was out to do that, maybe, maybe not the first time, maybe he was playing the long game. I don't know. You've given him the platform, though, to try. Yeah. So, anyway, I thought it was not that, but Adam believes, like, if somebody's coming back, it is to hook up.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Johnny, do you have any situation ships that you're still friends with or any of those women that you hooked up with before your current partner? I don't know where any of them are. I know where one of them is. I know where one of them is. The rest of them are missing.
Starting point is 00:29:05 The rest of them are on. What if I was the girl against the fridge the whole time? We did a big review. The girl against the fridge. Me! Oh my. That's how.
Starting point is 00:29:12 The girl against the fridge sounds like a post like Wingovi like memoir. I just did a hook moment where I pulled my face back so it would look like what I was when I was younger for you. Girl against the fridge. Does your current partner, to your knowledge, does she have any friends? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:32 She does. And how does that make you feel? I don't really care because I know how she feels about them. I know she does not like them. Okay. Oh, but she's still friends with them. She's not so friends with them. No.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Oh, okay. She knows they're like, because she grew up in Southern California, so it's like, those are people who were still kind of bopping around, I guess you could say. she's not friends with she's not friends with many people it's Dave Grohl she's very she has a lot of
Starting point is 00:29:57 So you've isolated this woman I haven't done I do the opposite I'm trying to like Let's go out Let's go do some stuff Yeah He leaves the gate open
Starting point is 00:30:06 Says feel free to roam Yeah I think that she Doesn't want to talk to her Most recent one Because how it ended It was like He was into drinking a lot And stuff
Starting point is 00:30:16 It was a bad thing I think that I can't remember if she Work up with him or not But you know Has she ever gotten an amends letter from him? Oh, I don't think so. Oh, he's still on the sauce, maybe.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Yeah. I got one real, real quick from my face. I was like, oh, sounds like you're addicted to AAA as well. Oh, my God, just made fun of him for that. I'm sorry. That's mean. That's so bad, Beth. It was mean.
Starting point is 00:30:55 Well, yeah, but now I was trying to be not mean. You can't get an amends letter like three weeks after. Yeah, it does seem like you require a little bit more of reflection. very quick. Yeah. I'll make fun of that. For it to feel authentic, it does feel like there needs to be a little bit more. For years.
Starting point is 00:31:10 If someone's to work the program, truly. It is funny. There's some people that I would welcome it. I know who have gotten sober. It's like, oh, now you're worse? It was a PR move for most of them. Yeah, I think we... It's like a way to, you have to time it right.
Starting point is 00:31:25 You have to do enough bad stuff. And then they go, I'm sober now. And it's like, so it's that's the excuse as to why I was doing that. I'm sober now and I'm also a hardcore Republican as well. Yeah. Like perfect timing. It's something about it. The one I'm thinking I did it just in time to be like,
Starting point is 00:31:38 all that bad behavior? It's in the past. Like you mean 2025? Or? I wonder if it's the same person. Well, I can think of two and one I think did actually try to make a positive change in there. And then the other one is just needed a little fresh start on being a bubble. I could do a entire podcast while people were referencing that we all know.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Yeah, yeah. What if behind the paywall you get a slip that has all the names like a word bank? All the names. The person who has a weird dick who sends it out. A picture of the weird dick. And all of that for. 2999. All of these people with substance abuse issues that we cannot name on the pod.
Starting point is 00:32:09 I know somebody who did, who was an asshole, we know this person, who famously was a terrible person and then did mushrooms one time. One time? And came back and said that they were completely changed. And I will say that there was, there was some movement. But then they got a very high profile comedy writing job and it all went to hell again. And that's like, and then it made you really. guys like, oh, it wasn't the mushrooms. It was you moving to New York and not getting booked
Starting point is 00:32:38 that really humbled you. And then as soon as you got, you know, the big marquee job again, it was all, we saw the real you again. This is who you are. Do you generally think it's a good idea to stay friends with exes or is it a case by case thing? I'm thinking of like, for example, one person was just a hook up here and there and we remain in touch and he's kind and respectful of my relationship and I enjoy it. I don't think it's like I need him in my life, but I think he's a funny person that I liked being around. So you're funny for money? Is he a professionally funny person?
Starting point is 00:33:09 Yeah, like I told you, I date in the same little area. Okay. So it is. Professional funny. Yeah. Right. But it's one of those things where I was like, I enjoy it. I could take it or leave it, but not in a disrespectful way. Like if I was dating somebody that really made me uncomfortable, I would have to like maybe consider that. But I also think it's good to date somebody who doesn't feel that way. Do you think it's easier to be friends with people you break up with
Starting point is 00:33:29 rather than the other way around? Ooh, that's a good one. Again, he's undefeated and I'm close to undefeated. So I'm thinking about this one person that we all kind of, I was talking about earlier. And I've gotten over it. I think once you're like happy and in a good place, you can say, yeah, you dumped me and it was for the best. And yeah, I'm fine with being friendly. That's a tough because that's one was like a power imbalance thing where it's like, if you got broken up with, you're probably seeking to, you know, make up some validation with that person.
Starting point is 00:33:59 When the breakup. Yeah. Go back and be like, oh, so you're sad. now, yes. Okay, we're friends because you regret the decision, but if you broke up with them, then it's like a thing where, I don't know, yeah, that's a, that's a tough one of the major problems
Starting point is 00:34:13 in reality TV is the whole I like this person. You can say anything at all. Yeah, yeah, anything following that. What the needing shows, it's very, like, what you see over and over again is I like you, and you're like, I like you too, and maybe we kissed, and then you're like, but I'm going to explore my options.
Starting point is 00:34:29 And then instead of me going, okay, that hurts my feelings, let me just sit and wait and see if they'll come back to me or not because we just met. And I go, screw you. I'm going to go hook up with him. I don't care about him, but I'm going to hook up with him. Yeah. And then you and I hook up and your feelings are hurt because I was hurt.
Starting point is 00:34:44 And that feels like the crux of most of the dating shows. Instead of sitting in your feelings and go, I really do like you, I'm actually kind of only interested in you. And that makes me feel weak. But that implies that you're dealing with people who have like a way of thinking about things that makes sense. That are above the age of 20. Well, and also, like, what you described, I think is not just a dating show problem.
Starting point is 00:35:05 Sure, sure. I think that exists. That dynamic exists. I mean, and the other problem is I think a lot of people approach dating now because of dating shows like they are, like the cameras are rolling. Yeah. And they are on Love Island. And they want that. Like, we're talking about people who like need to add drama to their lives.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Like, I know so many people who operate like they are on Love Island because that's like what they want. That's the excitement that they crave. You felt, did you guys feel different? when you met your people, the person you're committed to with, like, as a life partner. Like, you thought, this feels different. I could spend my life with them. Immediately. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:40 And that's what I felt to. Because this is, I, you know, I didn't talk, I was asking you guys questions, but I didn't really say, like, I've never had a boyfriend before my husband. Really? Like, I'd never been in a full-ass relationship. I'd been in situationships that maybe tops lasted three months. And I don't think I'm really friends with any of them anymore. And it's different to, I think gay guys are a little bit different because there's less of us.
Starting point is 00:36:05 And so it is. That are looking from the more monogamous. No, there's just less of us as a population. Got it. Like, there's just not as many gay guys. And so, like, I end up being friends with, or a lot of my friends that ends up being friends with their exes just by virtue of the fact, like, there's just not a lot of us. And we're all going to see each other all over the place. But I'm friendly with some of the people that I was hooking up with in situationships with.
Starting point is 00:36:27 But I can't say that I'm like good friends or even disqualify. desire to be good friends with any of them. I'm just trying to think, do you think current relationships now? Let's say that it doesn't end in cheating or some great betrayal, some earth-shattering betrayal, but they simply say, I have fallen out of love with you, and I do not, it's not fair to keep you in this relationship. Do you see yourself being friends with them under those circumstances, your current partners? I think we'd probably do a suicide pact first. That's how we would end it, I think. But if that didn't work,
Starting point is 00:37:02 yeah. You would be friends with her? I think so. I think it would take me some time. I'm obviously, I would be heartbroken. I'm saying, like, it would be tough. If the suicide thing didn't work,
Starting point is 00:37:13 like if we woke up, like, oh, didn't, the drugs didn't work. Okay, I guess we'll be friends. You know, I guess we'll be friends for a little bit after we go through the program. Yeah, I mean, I like him so much as a person. See, I'm of two minds because, like, I he is my best friend my husband is my best friend like bar none like and it's really hard for me to
Starting point is 00:37:33 imagine a scenario a where we break up and it's not amicable and it's not you know a situation in which it would be toxic for one of us right um to break up it's really hard for me to conceptualize that but it's also really hard for me to conceptualize being friends with him or being able to be friends with him because same like I love this person so much and to the idea of them dating somebody else, the idea of them being together with me, like, especially if they're the ones who broke it off, I would feel so humiliated and so possessive still that like I would need to separate myself from that person for I don't even know how long, probably until I'm in a relationship again and happy. I think that's the only circumstance in which I could be friends
Starting point is 00:38:17 with my ex. Yeah. It's hard for me to also put myself there because I do feel like, oh, I finally found a person I really would want to be a partner with the rest of my life, like, and be happy and just comfortable in that. So yeah, it would be really hard to, like, picture what you're saying. But I agree. It was like it might not. It would maybe take me moving on and being with somebody else. And even still, like, I'm kind of in that situation because he's divorced.
Starting point is 00:38:40 So, like, his ex is around with her partner. And we co-parent the kids. That's interesting. I mean, I, tell me. Here's the thing. Like, sometimes it's, like, just what you're shown. You know what I mean? Like, I don't have to.
Starting point is 00:38:56 deal majorly with her. I'm all, I'm on the road a lot as a comment. And you get one very specific side. Yeah, there's no, I don't feel hatred towards her at all. That's crazy because my, my, um, my mom and dad do not get along at all. I mean, they just like, they tried. And they're obviously a divorce, it sounds like. Yeah, I mean, I just say obviously. No, I mean, listen, my mom and dad didn't get along either and they were married up in forever. So are they divorced now? My dad's dad. Oh gosh. I knew that. She really, she really waited him out. Um, um. I knew that. I'm sorry. I'm like, I don't know. My parents don't talk about for dark reasons. Yes, yes. I'm aware. I'm familiar with your work.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Yes. So yeah, they don't get along. I don't get along with my dad. I feel like it is a relatively recent, not trend, but the idea of talking about this, the idea of this being a topic at all for us to be discussing right now is relatively recent. Because I don't think people of our parents' generation, traditionally speaking, kept in contact or stayed friends with people. I think you're right to say that because I remember it being weird when we were kids, right? If it was like, oh, this is my mom and my dad's girlfriend. And like, we all hang. I would be like, ooh. It always felt weird to do that.
Starting point is 00:40:08 But if you kind of look back, it's like my boyfriend's number one goal, or I should say number one priority is the kids. And for him, for him, even if he has feelings for his ex-wife, for animosity for her actions, it's never ever shown, especially in front of the kids. And he never was like, it was all green flags when I met him. It was never like, yeah, and she did this to me. And she, you know what I'm all green flags. It was like, whatever's best for the kids, I'm moving on.
Starting point is 00:40:34 He's been to therapy, I guess? Yeah. Yeah, I don't think our parents' generation have ever been to therapy at all. But he was never like talking trash to me about his ex-wife. It's like that's the mom of my kids and that's how I see her now. I don't see here's my ex-wife. So even if he does have those feelings, he's very smartly not saying them to you. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:40:50 That's good. That's interesting. He has expressed, of course, frustrations. Like now that we've been together, for sure, there's things that come up that are like natural. And he does tell me. It's not like, she's the best and everything's great. Tell you, he doesn't tell the kids one thing and tell you a different thing. Like these little mental dramas that play out. And you have someone who your mom is dating, contact you through email about something you didn't know about. And you're like, well, how is this
Starting point is 00:41:17 happening? Because my dad isn't even there right now. And he's, and they contact you separately about a different thing because your dad is, you know, remarried. to a man because he came out of the closet and so it's like all that doesn't happen no but I have got an email from my stepmom asking us to repair the rich a long email no it wasn't that long she asked me to CC my other sister C C C C didn't have the contact info didn't have the contact info do you think your dad knows that your stepmom is doing this I don't think so I'm so curious though I don't know the answer I don't know what's going on over there I it's very confusing With your dad.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Yeah, I haven't talked to him about a year. That's a whole other thing. Is he still with the raccoons? He set all those free. He moved on to feral cats. Yeah, you guys really need to listen to Beth's previous albums and watch your special. It's on YouTube now if you want to hear about the records. Because you've got to hear about the records.
Starting point is 00:42:22 You can't just drop that. Yeah, yeah. It's available on my YouTube. That's telling you. Check it out. Have you guys ever been in an on again off again? Have you ever bounced back to somebody that you broke up with? No, I got to remember that.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Let me think about that. I mean, it was pretty immediate. Yeah, I definitely have had it on and off. Oh, you guys know them. Yes, yes, yes. Oh, my gosh. Say his name and we'll bleep it. Oh, yes, okay.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Very on and off again. We wrote jokes back and forth, like, you know. See, this is what I actually, so a lot of your past have been comedians, right? Yes. How weird does that get that experience of watching someone else do a joke about your relationship after it's over? Well, you know, you guys are comics. You know what it feels like to be like, well, that's not the whole thing. You know, like the joke that's like, my ex told me she's in a new relationship.
Starting point is 00:43:19 I didn't know I signed up for push notifications or whatever. I'm like, I told you that because you sent me your cum. You know what I mean? Like, I don't think you're telling everybody the whole thing. Ammitting the come. Admitting the come. Title of that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:43:34 So in fact, the interesting thing is because I'm so. obsessed with being like honest and moral and righteous that I was like oh I'll keep all the context in so everybody knows exactly what happened so I like was medical about it do you say his name no but I just but I just very much included the backstory verbatim things said it wasn't just like jokies to the detriment of the joke or do you think like did did your righteousness yeah probably at times or yeah extraneous words and back story 100%. But I was obsessed with getting my side of the story out, you know. And nobody knows.
Starting point is 00:44:15 You're ever talking about? You know what I'm saying? No, yeah. He knows. Do you know? Yeah, do you know if he's seen the joke? Yeah, there were rumors that the next girl he'd dated after me had watched the special and broke up with him.
Starting point is 00:44:27 Oh! Who! Powerful. Powerful stuff. I saw him in the fall. and I was like, I don't know how he's going to be towards me. I feel like we're 40. What if we got over it?
Starting point is 00:44:44 Yeah. Kind. Yeah, especially, especially because you know we're going to be at JFL together. We're going to be at the Minneapolis Comedy Festival. We'll see each other. They have a comedy festival now? No, I mean, I'm just making up shit. 10,000 laughs, they do.
Starting point is 00:44:57 10,000 laughs, okay. 10,000 laughs, yeah. Any final thoughts about friends, being friends with your ex, staying friends with your ex, How to, that's exit a relationship to remain friends, any strategies or tips for all this case. I feel like people are, like, it's, I'm leaning towards Adams right that you can't really be friends with an ex because there's always like a lien or maybe they want to get back in there or just it's an open door. It's not worth it. It's not worth it. It's too much work.
Starting point is 00:45:25 Yeah. Seems to be also like, you never know what your partner, how they feel about it. Chances are they do not like it. Yeah, I think so. Because it just makes sense. I think the chances that I do not like it. slide back into this thing so easy. So why would you...
Starting point is 00:45:37 Also, they knew a different version of you. Like, even thinking of Jeb, who I love very much, my first love, he was reflecting things back to me when we reconnected that I really appreciated. That were like, you were so formative in this, and you inspire me in this way, and that set me off on this, you know, like, reflecting back, but that's 20 years ago.
Starting point is 00:45:53 I'm Christian now. Thank you. You let me to Christianity. But it's like, it is nice to have someone that knew you in that little time capsule era, but also I do totally forget everything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:04 I don't remember their siblings names. I don't remember their parents. Like, I forget everything about them for the most part. See, it's interesting because when I first started dating my husband, I was very threatened by both of his most recent exes. Like, I remember, like, because they were still in his life. Like, one of them is in our Burning Man Camp still. Okay.
Starting point is 00:46:20 So we, like, spend an extended period of time. And I remember, like, we're not monogamous, but we had like a no-fly list of, like, you can hook up with a lot of people, but not these people. And on my list, it was just his exes. And then, because he's still really friendly with both of them. and then I got to know them. And suddenly I was like, this is not an issue.
Starting point is 00:46:40 This, I'm like, oh, this guy? That's cool, though. This guy? I'm not going to. And now, ironically, I'm better friends with both of them than he is. Like, in fact, the one disagreement we had about our wedding was I really wanted to invite them. And he felt that it would be, as close as they are,
Starting point is 00:47:00 it would be inappropriate to have his exes at the wedding. even though I am good friends with them now. And so it doesn't, and I think that's the thing for me is that, like, I am so sure and certain and understand all of the reasons why he broke up with those guys, especially now that I know them. And no, not even that, not even that, like, they did anything wrong, but just I am so hyper aware now of why they are, they didn't, they weren't compatible in the first place. And, like, I understand the ways in which I fulfill those needs for my partner. in ways they didn't.
Starting point is 00:47:35 And they've both now found amazing partners as well. And I think that's partially why it's easier is that I know everyone's happy in this scenario. But yeah, I think it's like it's a real flex to be confident enough in your relationship to be like unbothered by it. I don't know. And I referenced age because part of me does feel like that.
Starting point is 00:47:55 Like I do feel like, I'm going to be weird to this woman. You just don't have time. I'm going to be weird to this. I'm 40. Like I don't have, I just don't have time for that anymore. Of course. It seems like so unnecessary. Everything that already sucks so much as it is.
Starting point is 00:48:08 But it does make you curious, like you said, you got to know them, right? It has maybe more curious. Like, you know, initially it's like, what do they look like? And you could just wish you could just put them in a little case and walk around it. You know what I mean? She's like, what is this? What made you like this person, you know? So, yeah, I have been curious more, but also she's so different than when they were together.
Starting point is 00:48:28 Her life is drastically. Yeah. I think or I thought anyways that his ex-partners were way hotter than me and that was a huge sticking point. Of course, I can understand that. Hatter than you? Please. Listen, I know it's hard to believe. Nobody is.
Starting point is 00:48:45 I mean, oh my gosh, guess who texted me? An ex. No, are you serious? Yes, look. That's wild. This always happens when I'm with Joel. An ex texted me just now. An ex texted you just now?
Starting point is 00:48:56 Yes. This has happened to me before, remember? We've done this before. I know. I'm familiar. What did they say? What did they have to say? They said they actually wrote a part for me and something and asked if I would meet with them about it.
Starting point is 00:49:09 So they wrote you apart. So have you, if you kept in contact with this person generally speaking? Yeah, loosely. It's never inappropriate. And it's always just like, I think I also just showed him kindness during a time in his life that was really difficult. And that makes all the difference. It really does. Did you do the thing he wrote for you?
Starting point is 00:49:25 I'm not yet, but that's what he wants to meet about. Oh, this is right now. Yeah, he just texted me. Do you think you're successful? Do you think it's going to be good? I think if anything, it'll be like an indie thing we get made. It'll be fun. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:36 Send an offer. Send an offer. Yeah, we got to get Johnny in it too. Let's see what the specifics are before you do that. Well, this was an incredible conversation. We're going to transition to the end game. But before I do, just a quick reminder for listeners, if you have a relationship question that you want me and my brilliant guests to tackle, leave us a voicemail at 213.
Starting point is 00:49:57 379-9-8-51. That's 213. 379-9-8-5-1 and we'll answer it on an upcoming episode. Also, if there's a text exchange with someone you're dating or crushing on that you can't stop obsessing over, maybe your ex has texted you offering you apart, something like that. We want to help you understand and we want to dissect it. So send us your most confusing and funny text, a screenshot and a little bit of context to intimacy coordinator pod at gmail.com and we might look at your text on an upcoming episode. That's intimacy coordinator pod at gmail.com. No questions today, but I do have some final
Starting point is 00:50:34 questions for my guests today. And I guess the first one that we always ask is what in a sentence or two is your piece of advice for our listeners to make a lasting relationship work. Johnny, you've been in quite a long relationship that seems to be working out quite well for you. What's the thoughts? Compromise. And it's a really great trick where what you do? is if you're arguing with someone, you call them from inside the house. Interesting. Sometimes it's easier to talk over the phone.
Starting point is 00:51:06 It's also just kind of funny to do that. It does make them. Brin was in her office and I called her. When I was in bags, I was exhausted. Yeah. And I called her on the phone. Were you fighting or were you? Sort of.
Starting point is 00:51:20 I mean, to get into it is just like the absurd thing ever, but yeah, kind of. But also, I was just totally exhausted. have been gone for two weeks. Yeah. You know, I'm like, when I get really tired, I get, you know. Irritable. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:33 But just beyond, like beyond. Probably a little baby. Levels beyond that are, I can't even realize, oh, my God, I'm feeling, I'm reacting to everything poorly. Does the phone call diffuse things a little bit just naturally? Because it's, again, like you said, stupid and silly. But here's the other thing. Part of your life is being away and acting on things.
Starting point is 00:51:50 And so that's a medium that you are comfortable with. And there's a little distance to it, but also just comfortability. Are we talking face? time or audio only. It's an audio call. Audio, yeah. Yeah, just voice and able to say anything. And I don't know.
Starting point is 00:52:03 I think if you like someone's voice, you should like your partner's voice. If you don't like your partner's voice, that's a big problem. 100%. Yeah. That's a tough one. I do really like my partner's voice.
Starting point is 00:52:14 I guess that is true. I guess I would never get that far if, like, the voice was off. I don't think it made it even to a second day. We know plenty of unique voices in our world where I'm like, don't know how anybody does it. Oh, yeah. Because my question is.
Starting point is 00:52:27 It's just like, why do you sound like in bed? Yeah, I know. Like how in the world would that translate to a positive sexual experience, like audio-wise? Some people just like weird stuff, you know? It's like some people like when someone has a Midwestern accent, which to me I'm like, how could you care about? Not too much. Not too much. I'm from Minnesota so I can say that.
Starting point is 00:52:50 Okay. If I heard someone was like, oh my God, you're so beautiful. Wow. You want to have sex, but, ah. Like it's like repulsive. Oh my God. Yeah. This is not,
Starting point is 00:53:03 he does not speak for the podcast here at intimacy coordinator. We love all accents, especially Midwestern accents. Really? You do? Yeah. Don't you know. Do you guys use a different voice with your partner at home?
Starting point is 00:53:13 Like in your, if you are settled into comfort, do you use, do you, does your voice change a little bit? I don't think so. I don't think so. I think there are different tones.
Starting point is 00:53:27 Yeah, no. Okay, see, that's crazy because I, once I got comfortable with my husband, there's a voice that I use at home that I, like, sometimes catch myself. And it is, like, I think probably a more natural voice than the one that I am currently using. Really? And it is, like, a level of comfort that I've gotten to. And, like, sometimes I'll forget when we're in mixed company that, like, it's not just the two of us. And I'll start using that voice.
Starting point is 00:53:51 And, like, what, who is it? Hi, going. Is it higher or lower? It's, um, it's definitely like. performative, like less like, I'm talking. It's a little less performative, but it's also like, it is like not like, I would not consider it sexy. It's like it's vulnerable. It's a little bit more vulnerable.
Starting point is 00:54:07 It is probably like more, it's not like baby voice or anything like that. Okay, good. But it is like just like sort of my resting, like if I were alone or with someone that I was really. Actually, not, it's weird. I don't even think some of my closest friends I use this voice with them. But it is just like, it's almost more like, like, like, like, I was really. a little boy voice, not baby voice, but it is just like a child, it is like an innocence, kind of like, I'm not trying to sound more masculine, I'm not trying to modulate my, my voice
Starting point is 00:54:37 down or sound less gay or anything like that. It is just my, like, my truest freest self without like society asking me to change because of like gayness. So it's probably like a little more funboyant, honestly, than the voice that I've trained myself to use on stage or the one that I've That adds a lot of context to it. Yeah. Before I let you guys go really quickly, what is something that has made you believe in love this week? It can be anything you've seen, heard, experienced yourself. I mean, it's my boyfriend, right?
Starting point is 00:55:12 I don't know. Like, he picked me up from the airport. That is love. He gets out. He gets my bag. That's early. You guys are still early. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:55:20 Yeah, I mean, for me, that's early. Just pick up in the airport, I wouldn't do that. for anybody. See, that's the reverse. When I was first dating my partner, I would pick him up from the airport every time. And now I'm like, babe, you can get, you can get the Uber.
Starting point is 00:55:34 Yeah. You can get an Uber from the airport. Yeah, it gets my bags, opens the door for me, has a little drink in there that I want. Oh my God. Wow. Can I also bait him a little bit?
Starting point is 00:55:42 I mean, can you pick me up from the airport? It's just romantic. And it's like, I look forward to getting home from the road. That's beyond romantic. That's like, oh my God. That's making me believe in love right now. Johnny? I don't know. I mean, I think believe in love. I think I saw how much my raspberries grew.
Starting point is 00:56:06 And I was really excited that they might get some fruit. He's a great gardener. That's amazing. That's a great answer to the question, quite honestly, is the beauty of God's creation has reminded you that love exists in the world. And listen, we are a Christian podcast. And that is right in line with the ethos of. this show. All right. Christian podcast. Yeah. In fact, if you guys could lower your heads, we're going to end with a prayer.
Starting point is 00:56:35 Dear Lord, no. You guys, this has been so much fun. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much. In Jesus' name, I ask you, Beth, where can the people find you?
