Starting point is 00:00:00 Bad Dates. Speed Dates. Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of the Bad Dates mini episode Speed Date, where we slow things down. OK, normally it's three comedians screaming over each other, trying to be the funniest one on mic. But no, no, no, no, no, no. We say, let's get one in here and let's go deep.
Starting point is 00:00:26 OK, let's get in there. Let's figure out what makes them tick specifically when it comes to love. And I am so excited to sit down with this guest this week. She is an actress, comedian and improviser and two time Canadian Comedy Award winner. You've seen her on the iconic jury duty, Glamorous, Interior Chinatown and Twisted Metal. Ladies and gentlemen, that's called Range and her name is called Lisa Gilroy.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Hello Lisa. My name is called Lisa Gilroy, honey. Yes it is. That's what my name's called and don't forget it. It's so good to see you. I haven't seen you since we've, we did not share any scenes in Glamorous, but we did go to a pumpkin pet or an apple picking excursion. One of the most romantic things people could ever do.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Kind of was, I was in love. I think you were overall, if I'm not mistaken. I did, in fact, I did. I was playing the part. You always know the theme. I was LARPing and it's so So fun and you were by all accounts and from what I saw
Starting point is 00:01:37 One of the funniest parts of that show as you are the funniest part of many shows and clips and things that I've seen It's not mentioned in here, but you also have an amazing social media like one of the only ones to do it, right? so When we get to the end of the episode and I ask for the ad, it's not just for promotional purposes. People really go and check her out because she's you. I consider you Lisa kind of like one of the early like vanguards of the form of the front facing sort of character. I do consider myself a vanguard of the next year. I'm called sort of character. Well, I do consider myself a vanguard of the nexium cult, first of all.
Starting point is 00:02:06 First things first. But thank you. I really respect that. And I will coerce you into having sex with me later. Oh, I cannot wait. Let me tell you, I love to pretend to not be into it, but that just makes me horny. Can you play dodgeball you little bitch? Oh, I can. But I don't actually dodge from the balls
Starting point is 00:02:28 because I like it too much when I feel it. Oh my God, you like to be spanked by the rubber balls? Exactly. I was terrified of dodgeball in like middle school. Did you have to play in gym? Well, so I was homeschooled until junior year of high school, and so by the time I got to school, we had left all those things behind and my, my senior year gym credit was called, um, exploration and adventure. And
Starting point is 00:02:52 it was at a time when the MTV's, the challenge was really big. And so every day we would go in and we would play team-based games that were all inspired because our, our teacher was like in like obsessed with Survivor and the challenge, and so every day we would get to go and do like weird challenges that he would set up that were inspired by. He went to Reality Show High. It's like Wizards of Waverly Place, but for hot kids.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Exactly, so that's pretty cool. No dodge ball though. What kind of challenges did you do? What was the gnarliest one? I mean, we did go to a ropes course at one point as a field trip to do that. But I have to say, I mean, it was low rent. Like he was trying to recreate Survivor in the challenge,
Starting point is 00:03:36 but he did not have the budget to really do so. So it was a lot of like step on these buckets. Like they're stepping stones, but they're not weighed down properly. So kids are falling left and right. And like it was a very obstacle course heavy class. I will say. Did you ever have to eat a bug? I never had to eat a bug. And this was what was confusing to me because it was exploration and adventure. Not a lot of exploration going on. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Well, you were. We cut to the gym. I think you were exploring your your personality and your your kind of own charisma You're kind of exploring the depths of your own soul and your own confidence And you are really riding hard for mr. S*** right now And his and his name out Let's bleep the name out only because he was later arrested for exposing himself to two college girls I'm not joking and the name out only because he was later arrested for exposing himself to college girls. That's for real.
Starting point is 00:04:25 I'm not joking. Challenge accepted. Dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark, dark. Okay. On to less dark matters though, before I jump into the meat of the episode with the questions that I normally ask every guest on the show, I mentioned it briefly in your credits, but the iconic jury duty, we have to talk about it. I mean, what a blessing and a boon that you got to be involved in one of, I think, will go down in history as one of the most unique, like, like, like a huge comedies
Starting point is 00:04:58 that no one saw coming, quite frankly. I don't think anybody like you. Yeah, no, I think most people did, in fact. And it was like, what was that experience like walk me through that experience? How much did you know about it going in? How was the how what was the what were the challenges in keeping it a secret from Ronald? Like what was that experience like for you? If you can give us a top line sort of.
Starting point is 00:05:24 So I didn't realize you were like an interviewer like Barbara Walters. This is so exciting. You like did research. Terry Gross can eat my ass, okay? Okay, so I auditioned originally when the script came through. Well, there was no script.
Starting point is 00:05:39 It was just like this weird, and you know me, I'll audition for anything. And it's a safety concern. So I originally auditioned for the main plaintiff. She was the influencer woman who sat in that plaintiff's seat for the entire court proceedings. And I was so devastated when I didn't get it. And then they started filming and I kept emailing my reps and I never do this because I always when I didn't get it. done an unscripted improvised show before, so I just wanted in so bad. And then a couple weeks into filming, they, or maybe a week into, or I guess into production, so they had already worked with the cast beforehand, all that stuff, everything was already set in motion, all the characters were
Starting point is 00:06:37 set, they suddenly were like, oh, we could use another witness. And so they called me to do that. That's amazing. And then I got to have so much fun doing that. It was only one day. And I gotta say though Lisa I do think that your part had a bigger impact or a more lasting impact Than the original part that no shade to her at all But I just you so funny she had like a lot of heavy lifting to do though because she had to like move A lot stuff and all I had to do say jokes. That is fair. That is
Starting point is 00:07:02 It's the kind of the best Place to be in a lot of those sorts of projects and now can you talk and we can cut this out if you if you Cannot absolutely talk about this, but did you film with the original? men that predated The gentleman that we eventually ended up with Yes, I but when I was shooting I didn't know who the Mark was at all. I wasn't told. So when I looked at that Jerry Fox, I recognized Kirk Fox, and there was one guy that I knew, Ross, from just like the comedy community.
Starting point is 00:07:35 So I knew it wasn't them, or I guess I hoped it wasn't them. My friends are so stupid. But then, yeah, so I didn't know. So it was actually kind of easy to not like linger too long looking At someone and it's funny because I saw Ronald and thought like he's way too attractive to be the guy. There's no way Oh, yeah, he does look like he looks like an actor. Yeah But you weren't there with the guys that he replaced like did you have to reshoot? Oh, yeah They were there were yeah a few different guys. Yeah. Yeah, but they have to reshoot? Oh, yeah, there were, yeah, a few different guys.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Yeah, yeah, but they didn't use that stuff, so... Yeah, no, I mean, and it is interesting because of course, of course a project of that magnitude, you're not gonna strike gold, I think, on the first try. No, everybody does it multiple times. Like, I'm almost certain Nathan Fielder does everything multiple times over.
Starting point is 00:08:23 They write the premise, they do it with different people, plug and play, and then figure out who works the best. But it's brilliant. It's a brilliant show. I'm almost certain Nathan Fielder does everything multiple times over. They write the premise, they do it with different people, plug and play, and then figure out who works best. That is brilliant. It's a brilliant show. Sweet days. Sweet days. You are so excellent in Jury Duty and everything.
Starting point is 00:08:44 I'm just so excited. I love Twisted Metal. I've been playing it since I was 11 years old. And so I will be watching the second season with you featured. Listen, gay people can be a lot of different things. OK? I don't know. I'm sorry to be the first one to tell you this.
Starting point is 00:08:59 But I didn't know. It's not all ABBA and share and coach bags in my household. OK, I had never even heard of Twisted Metal before I auditioned for it. It was a huge game in like the late 90s, early 2000s. It was like, I mean, like, yeah, it was it was definitely boycotted. So I understand why you'd be confused why I liked it. But I did like to drive around. But I am Asian.
Starting point is 00:09:24 And so the idea of being able to drive poorly and destructively with reckless abandon was actually quite alluring to me as a young child. Haki, Haki, Haki, Haki, Hack. But who's not hack is Lisa Gilroy and Lisa, as you are sort of a icon in pop culture yourself, I'm interested to ask you this first question, which is what is a relationship, a moment, a person or something from pop culture
Starting point is 00:09:54 that really imprinted on you at a certain point in your life about what love should look like or what you wanted out of a loving relationship, if there is one. It could be a song, a movie, a scene, a couple, whatever springs to mind. Oh, well, I remember, just hearing you repeat the question made me think,
Starting point is 00:10:15 because I had a really hard time thinking of this. The only thing I could really think of was, remember in 2005 at the Much Music Video Awards when Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling won Best Kiss, and then they did it on stage. Yes! Oh my god, Joel. And she was like so little and she just leapt into his arms and he was like touching her butt and she was wearing those jeans. That is so amazing because that is also weirdly imprinted in my brain. I wouldn't say it was the thing that like affected me or like was a flexion point in
Starting point is 00:10:45 my view of love, but what about that spoke to you? Because they were being real. Like I think that that's like that that still blows my mind in fact, because I'm like they weren't even on camera. They were just being them act their actual selves with their first names and their last names standing up on stage in their own clothes. And they did that. That's like so titillating to me. It's like, it's like, yeah. And it is sort of like, it is exciting when you find out someone's not really acting, you know, like it is like the veil has fallen and it's like, there's no suspension of disbelief required here, honey. Yeah, this is real. This is real life. And then that sort of enhances your experience of the notebook, because then you go back
Starting point is 00:11:27 and watch the notebook and you're like, oh my god, this is all real. Yeah, all real. Except for then sometimes, you know, they end up, like it feels like boyfriend, girlfriend, or girlfriend, girlfriend, boyfriend, boyfriend wants to come all from movies all the time, but sometimes it's not who you think.
Starting point is 00:11:40 It's not the couple that you think. Like, okay, well, I mean like Ariana Grande ended up with the munchkin man, but he wasn't like her romantic lead in the movie No, right so I never know who had chemistry on the set you're right. You're very right I do think it would have been tough for her Ariana I mean to begin a relationship with her actual male love interest in the film He was like a twisted metal guy. Yeah No, I think he unfortunately is a little too familiar with Ariana's Back catalog of music. I know all the deep cuts and that is disqualifying. I think yeah for most straight women I will say
Starting point is 00:12:23 That is a that is a That is a really good one. I have to say Rachel McAdams is one of our best, one of our absolute best that we have ever had. And this is the thing, I'm starting a charity, a non-profit organization that helps Rachel McAdams get better agents. Because that is where I, that's gotta be it. That's gotta be why we are not seeing her
Starting point is 00:12:51 in every Oscar nominated film, three of them per year. Because why else? She can do anything. She should be at the top of everyone's list, the first stand out of everybody's lips. I think she, like Mean girls alone should cement her. Like she should get a fucking lifetime achievement award for that film alone.
Starting point is 00:13:08 And in fact, I think if that film came out a slightly later, she would have actually been, if Melissa McCarthy was in awards contention for Bridesmaids, Rachel McAdams could have been in awards contention for Regina George. She really could have. Was Melissa McCarthy really in awards contention? She was nominated for an Oscar.
Starting point is 00:13:24 That's crazy. I didn't know McCarthy really in awards contention. She was nominated for an Oscar. That's crazy. I didn't know they treated comedians so good. They don't often celebrate comedies, especially broad comedies. Yeah. So you're telling me at the Oscars, we had like Meryl Streep standing on stage and she was like, the nominees are. And then it would be like Melissa McCarthy, bridesmaids. And then the clip of her shitting her pants in the wedding dress store would come up on the big screen.
Starting point is 00:13:48 I'm pretty sure it was the one where, like near the end of the movie, she was like talking to her about the dogs that she had adopted. That's so, I didn't know that. This changes everything. I think we should start going for Oscars. I think, honestly, it's a travesty
Starting point is 00:14:04 that you weren't given an Oscar for your performance in Jury duty and I know that would break a lot of rules, but I gotta say it would have been warranted So on to our next question our final question actually is Lisa What has? Happened to you over the last week or so recently that has made you believe in love? And I can be so bold.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Well, my girlfriends have really been giving me a lot of love this week. My one of my friends sent me cookies from Levain, which is so nice. A little box of three of those cookies is simply $75. Right, it's a mortgage payment. And then my sister, I've just been a little bit homesick for Canada, and my sister had a whole FaceTime night
Starting point is 00:14:50 with me where we just colored in our independent coloring books for an hour, barely speaking, like in our own little respective psych wards. And that is intimacy. That's intimacy. That's girlhood, honey. Yeah. Yeah, so those girls have really been loving me
Starting point is 00:15:05 and I just love them. I love it. I love it when your girls gas you up. You gotta have girls in your life that gas you up because if not, then you know, who's gonna do it? You're gonna get gassed down by life. You're running on empty.
Starting point is 00:15:16 You're running on fumes if you don't have your girls gassing you up. But wait, can I tell you more romantic things that, outside that kiss? Because I just wanna say one more thing. Remember Practical Magic? Of course. Okay, remember when the witches put a spell on her
Starting point is 00:15:31 and she runs and then goes and kisses the man who works with the fruit stand? Absolutely. And Faith Hills, this kiss is playing? That's another really good one. That is another really good one. And it's like, I love that scene because it is not necessarily the model of consent that we would love to see in film and television.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Because she was bewitched. But ultimately she did fall in love with that man for real. And then he, well, the Black Beetle of Death and all that. Yeah. But I remember crying in part because I connect with Sandra Bullock so much on so many different levels. Because your two aunties are always cursing you into doing like little sexual things. Yeah. But no, that was because it was like seeing this person finally give in to a romantic moment like that, which I am like I can relate to because for so long I was like fuck
Starting point is 00:16:27 Romance, it's cringe, you know, and then when you finally like go and sort of like allow yourself to enjoy those moments It's really it's it changes you change. Oh, that's beautiful Lisa are you in a relationship right now? Yeah, you are. How long have you been in a relationship? I'm married to my wonderful guy and we've been married for 13 years this year. Jesus. Were you a child bride, Lisa? Yeah, I was so little. I rolled down the aisle on a skateboard, chewing bubble gum and someone had to push me. Oh my God. No, I truly, I placed you at like 30. So it is shocking.
Starting point is 00:17:03 We got married in college. We got married really young. Oh you did Okay, you're just so excited and so in love and we still are and I'm so thankful that that worked out That is I will say you guys are not I would say the typical story of people who get married in college and then experience Global pandemic and are forced to live together for almost two years with no very little interaction with anyone else. Not a lot of success stories coming from that list of attributes on paper. So kudos to you for making it through the fire of your Saturn returns and a global pandemic at the same time. Oh my God, thank you. The fire of my Saturn returns. Yeah, you did it.
Starting point is 00:17:45 You made it and it's successful. And I, you know, I asked you if you were in a relationship because I wanted to make sure, but I did, you know, I have seen pictures of the man and I will say, you're a very lucky woman. Cutie, I think he kind of looks like your guy a little bit. Yeah, no, actually that's probably why I thought that. We should have them arm wrestle.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Oh, can we? Oh my god, Lisa, live on pod, I'm going to ask you, can we get a double date going? How can we trick them into doing it, though? Because we should have a double date. And then suddenly, you'd be like, oh my god, like, well, OK, then I'll invite Steve into the bathroom. And I'll be like, oh, it's so embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I have to cut the back of your hair. Sometimes I cut his hair for him. So I'll be like, take your shirt off quick so I don't get hair on your shirt. And then meanwhile, you start a fire in the kitchen and then your guys' shirt will catch fire. Take that off, right? Then comes the jello pit. Then we're like, we gotta get out of the house.
Starting point is 00:18:32 They slip. Now they're absolutely slimy with goo. And then we're like, oh, quick, hold on. Hold on to each other and arm wrestle. And then we're just standing back going, oh. Yeah, exactly. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah. Oh my God. You know, unfortunately that's a brilliant plan,
Starting point is 00:18:52 but the one flaw in your plan is that your boyfriend doesn't have arms. He would unfortunately really enjoy every part of that. And I don't think it would be as enjoyable for your guy. It doesn't have to be enjoyable for him. Being married to me, I'm sure, is not that enjoyable, and he does it for so long. Exactly, and it's all sort of reparations,
Starting point is 00:19:10 for every wrongdoing that every straight man has ever done. Being married to you, being forced to wrestle, my partner naked, you know? It's all atonement. It's atonement, honey. Yes, oh, I remember that movie. Ugh, now did you audition for that too? I auditioned for Little Brainy.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Yeah. But I was getting married that weekend so I couldn't do it. Incredible. Lisa, this has been such a joy to sit down and have a quick little chat with you.
